ANOTHER AU!? I know what you're saying... Gwen, you're nuts. But not only are you absolutely right, I think this one might be my most ambitious one yet. As a young nerd, there were two groups. The Marvel fans and the DC fans. And while the rivalry certainly has calmed down a bit, I was almost always torn. So, earlier in the week, I decided to do the one thing that every fanfic writer has tried at least once.

A Marvel/DC crossover.

But unlike the typical realm merger, to put it in Mortal Kombat terms, this is a universe where both properties coexist. It’s been a punishingly busy semester. Treated myself to a bouquet of farmer’s market lilacs and went to the Exposition Park Rose Garden after proctoring my last exam. Today my second fellowship offer came through along with a separate invitation to deliver a prestigious series of lectures at Brandeis University. Pray that my Dean approves my fellowship leave so I can spend the next 1.5-2 years focusing exclusively on my research and writing. Next academic year I’ll be returning to the natal stream of Harvard University where I will finish my Princeton UP book and have a chance to live in the same city as three of my best friends in the world. During my sabbatical (2024/25) I hope to spend at least a semester living in Italy so I can apply for Italian citizenship thru my slacker Sicilian great grandfather Gandolfo who (lucky for me) did not naturalize as a US citizen before my grandpa was born, thus making me eligible for an EU golden ticket through Italy’s byzantine jure sanguinis law. I am trying to buy myself out of capitalist bondage by saving enough money to get a little house in Italy. (I told Anne Boyer in an email recently: “Basically I want the Italian version of Lisa Robertson’s life”).

After moving in and out of spaces of prestige, I am realizing freedom is really the only thing that matters. Unfortunately the cost of prestige is lack of freedom. Perhaps there is a (repressed) side of my character that is deeply competitive and balks at not being taken seriously—I needed to prove to myself and others that I was capable of landing a fancy R1 job (I even got a TT job in the Ivy League that was pulled during the pandemic year). But teaching at a somewhat conservative rich kid school has not been easy—my class was disrupted by a white supremacist shitposter. A football player facilitated the stunt. I miss my anticapitalist post-gender New School zoomer undergrads and their compulsive posting of links to ultra-leftist think pieces. The one thing that makes my current job worth it is my beautiful and brilliant grad students—the magic of being in the classroom and breaking our brains against a difficult text.

She has her life together, and now she’s looking for someone to share it with.

Family/childhood: Lilly has a large family, her parents are still together after 38 years of marriage, their relationship is something she has always admired, and hoped to emulate someday with the right person. She has 4 older siblings, 3 sisters, and one brother. All of her siblings are married, and have children. She has 9 nieces and nephews. Stephen is the oldest, followed by Nicole, Claire, Ivy, and finally Lilly. She is very close with all of her siblings, but is closest with Nicole. They are both more introverted than the rest of their family. All in all they are a very tight knit group. Their life hasn’t been always been perfect, but they have had each other through it all.

1)The Chinese proverb says buy the best and you only cry once. Quality clothes are durable and always in style. Buy the best you can afford and maintain it. Don’t let your wife or girlfriend throw your clothes away. Real luxury is the comprehension of quality.

2)You may have noticed that athletic clothes actually have the ironic result of making many people appear less athletic than they would in almost any other sort of dress.

3)There are two kinds of crazy people: those who think they’re Napoleon, and those who think they can buy a good suit cheap. Every purchase should be a long-term commitment.

4)Anyone who has the money can buy fashion any time. Style you have to learn and earn. It develops and refines itself. You won’t find it in the shop window, or simply by knowing the trendy labels.

5)There’s a relatively new phenomenon – you can check this on all of those “stylish” blog sites – of men dressing as though it were a blood sport, a competition rather than a celebration. They wear their clothes as though they were weapons, and thus almost never look comfortable in what they’ve got on.

6)People talk about how clothes should fit, but fit is a nonsensical concept. Good tailors are not after fit, but effect. And effect means proportion. The idea is to help your figure, not to reproduce it.

7)Never look dressed up, always look as though you just threw it on … even if it takes some time and effort. As a keen anthropologist of the posh, I can tell you that the best dressers look like they live in their clothes.

8)There is no such thing as one size fits all.

9)As a brothel keeper once told me, there are no tricks, there are only enthusiasms.

10)Some people think clothes aren’t important, while others think they’re everything. In my writing and in my wardrobe I’ve tried to walk that fine line between those two extremes. A good suit is not a cure for cancer or global warming, but it is important to present yourself with confidence. It may be superficial, but we must leave the deeper aspects of our souls to priests, psychiatrists, and late night reflections.

Three Minutes to Eternity: My ESC 250 (intermission + honorable mentions)

Eurovision has >1600 songs in its discography, with the exact number varying on whether to count the songs that didn't qualify from the 1993 and 1996 pre-qualifier rounds, along with the 2020 songs lost to the pandemic (1603 without both categories, 1614 including the pre-qualifier songs but without the 2020 songs, 1644 with the lost 2020 songs, and 1655 including both).

Either way, taking 250 from so many songs is a challenge, and a lot get lost the way. (250 into each of them would round out to 15% of all Eurovision songs ever. By the time we get to song #2000, it will only be one eighth of all of them. It's a very exclusive club)

As a result, here's an honorable mentions list for the songs that didn't make it on the list, but I still adore (in chronological order). Later, I'll give you songs that I love, but fell into the categories above, and where they would place.
