“He was down for midday patrol, should mean you’re back in time for dinner later,” His hand moves to the back of his neck, like it always does when there’s something else, he’s not telling you, “You should know Joel is down as his patrol partner, I know things haven’t been easy between you two, so if you’re not comfortable, I can take it instead.” 

You shake your head, so Joel hasn’t told Tommy about kissing you. Interesting. Were you about to go back to being a secret again? 

“It’s alright Tommy, I’m a big girl,” You shrug your shoulders, “Plus, Maria will have my ass, you’ve got a baby to think about now, can’t have you out there risking life and limb just yet.” 

“I owe you one, thank you,” Tommy reaches out to squeeze your arm, “I’ll make sure he’s on his best behaviour.”

There’s a slight breeze through the trees as you walk which makes the heat pleasant. You’ve got a rifle strapped to your back, much like you had when you’d taken Joel and Ellie to the lake, and a handgun resting in the back of your jeans. Joel is walking a few steps behind you; he’s been like that since you left Jackson an hour ago. 

“Enjoying the view, Miller?” You shoot over your shoulder. 

“Always have.” Is his response. He can’t see your face but you’re smiling. 

You have to admit, this is weird. When you’d met with him at the gun store, he’d been polite, saying hello, but keeping his distance. You thought maybe once you’d left the confines of town he’d lighten up, walk closer to you, maybe even hold your hand, but he’d kept a few steps behind you all the way. Maybe it had something to do with the tight jeans you’d decided to wear, but something in you suspects he’d a few steps behind to keep an eye out, to protect you if something goes wrong. 

It doesn’t take long for you both to reach the bottom of the hill that leads to the lodge. You stop and prepare yourself. You’d first done this run with Tommy in the winter and it had almost killed you. The snow had made walking up the steep incline even harder, and when Tommy had announced you were halfway you thought you might cry. Your lungs were screaming, the calf muscles in your legs threatening to cramp. 

“You alright?” Joel asks, finally standing side-by-side with you. 

“I hate this fuckin’ hill.” You reply simply. 

Joel laughs, “Come on, you’ve still got youth on your side, I’m old and this is fine.” 

“I’m forty-five years old Joel and my knees have gone to shit,” You hit his arm, “And my lungs are not what they once were.” 

He’s stepping forward to start walking, “That’s what you get for starting on cigarettes,” He scoffs, turning around to you, “You should really give up.” 

“Don’t try and take the high ground Miller, it won’t work.”

You slip your hand into his and he’s pulling you up the start of the hill. His hand is still large against your own, his skin still rough and calloused, like it always had been. You’d expected him to let go of your hand once you got moving, but instead, he moves to lace his fingers through your own. You look down at your entwined hands and up at his face, which shows a smile you hadn’t seen in forever. 

“I’m sorry I haven’t been around much,” He speaks softly as you tackle the hill together, “Tommy’s been bustin’ my ass with patrols all week.” 

“It’s alright Joel, you’re here now.” You give his hand a squeeze and a comfortable silence falls between you. 

“Listen, I wanted to say sorry for what I said before,” You can tell he’s a little out of breath, but you don’t know whether that’s from the hill or the nerves you can feel radiating through him, “It was wrong of me to tell you I hadn’t thought about you, truth is darlin’ I never stopped, always wondered what happened to you, where you were, what you were doin’, it drove me crazy the whole time,” He stops to take a deep breath, “I’m fuckin’ awful at this,” He grumbles to himself, “I guess what I was tryin’ to say to you was that thinking you were dead helped me stop thinking that maybe you weren’t safe, that someone had you or somethin’ like that.” 

“Joel, stop, please,” You give him another squeeze to his hand, “It’s fine, I get it. There were times when I tried to do the same, although I suppose if anyone was going to make it through this whole ordeal then it was always going to be you,” The hill is becoming steeper and you’ve both slowed down, “I guess I just always knew if it wasn’t going to be you, you know, that I ended up with, I didn’t want anyone else, that’s why I kept telling myself one day, one day I’d find you, and all that matters now is that I did, we can forget everything else, let’s just focus on moving forward.” 

It takes another thirty minutes or so of walking before you’re cresting the brow of the hill and the lodge comes into view. Joel let’s go of your hand for the first time since he took it, letting you press your palms to your knees, bent over to catch your breath. He’s right, you need to give up the smoking. 

Once you’re both sure the lodge is still secure with no signs of infected or raiders, you move to the guestbook which Tommy had set up and write both yours and Joel’s name down, with the date and any observation notes. When you turn around, he’s leant against the railings, arms crossed over his chest with his backpack and rifle placed against the wall. The sun in framing him like he’s straight from the pages of the bible, creating a halo around his head, and you think he’s the most beautiful man you’ve ever seen, but then again, he always was. 

“C’mere darlin’.” He reaches a hand out to you and you walk the short distance, taking hold of it.

Hi!😊 What are your favourite horror books, shows and or movies? I'm not very familiar with the genre, but when I was a teenager I was hooked on The Fear Street series (R. L. Because I can't get the idea of The Last Of Us Part 3 out of my head, I decided to come up with a hypothetical story idea.

Time jump to 10 years into the future. Ellie managed to rebuild her relationship with Dina, she's a full time parent to JJ now and Ellie is the leader of the patrols. Tommy is still mad at her and they don't talk.

Meanwhile, Abby is now a high ranking member of the Fireflies. Lev is all grown up now and he asks Abby if she ever saw a life besides fufilling her dad's legacy and wanting revenge. Abby doesn't know how to answer. So during a raid to get more supplies with her team of Fireflies, they meet a Firefly who came from Salt Lake but he's infected, he brings news that he met the immune girl and that he's been trying to find the SB Fireflies for a long time.

This of course, is news to the Fireflies and they know Abby came from Salt Lake and they ask her if she knows about the immune girl. Abby is reminded of her dad's death and she wants to lie but can't bring herself to do it and she tells them where she thinks Ellie is. the fireflies decide to try to convince Ellie to make the cure and say that if she refuses then they'd force her. Abby is again reminded of what Ellie did in Seattle and tries to convince the Fireflies that it's not a good idea. But they are already blinded by their mission so Abby decides to go with them to try to make them change their minds, Lev tags along.

So another time jump, make it 3 months. The Fireflies have found Jackson, they are holed up in the same lodge where Abby killed Joel. She remembers everything and decides to scout out Jackson with Lev to clear her head. She spots Ellie and JJ returning to Jackson after a hunting trip. Abby realizes that Ellie's a mom now and after having her dad taken from her, she knows she cannot do the same to JJ. So she and Lev decide to inform Ellie of the Fireflies and have her make a choice.

So they basically wait for Ellie to go out of Jackson which is the next day and Ellie nearly shoots Abby. She is shocked to see her after all these years and Abby is about to warn her when the other Fireflies show up. Abby tries to protest as the Fireflies kidnap Ellie but is shot and left for dead. She wakes up to Lev helping her, Lev ran off from the group. They decide to rescue Ellie even if means killing the Fireflies. So they go on that journey and they find the group.

They manage to rescue Ellie but the Fireflies have told Ellie about the cure and she wants to make the vaccine. Abby doesn't know what to do now and they have an argument about it. Lev who is fed up, scolds both of them and tells Ellie that she has a family now. This brings Ellie back to the night she left Dina and to Joel who wanted her to live. Realizing that, Ellie decides to go back home.

But the Fireflies are not having it. It turns nasty with Abby killing all of the Fireflies with Ellie and Lev. At the end of it, Abby tells Ellie to go home while she heads back to SB to lie to the Fireflies. Lev, who wants a life outside of the Fireflies, joins Ellie. So Ellie goes back home, Lev is accepted into Jackson and Abby lies to the Fireflies, saying it was all false.

Then another time jump to maybe 60 years into the future, Abby is now a retired Firefly, most of the infected have died out and Ellie shows up with her family to SB, ready to make the cure.

Climate Change Comes to the Tetons. (New York Times)

On the wall of my hotel room here at the Jackson Lake Lodge in Moran, Wyo., there is a framed photograph of the spectacular Teton Range taken during the 1950s.

In it, a handful of tourists in short-sleeve shirts admire the jagged, snow-capped peaks. While it is clearly summer in the picture, the mountains are blanketed in snow, with huge glaciers covering much of the granite.

Looking out my window at the same vista this morning, there is not a trace of fresh snowfall to be seen on the peaks forming one of America’s most beautiful mountain ranges. And the glaciers are markedly smaller than they were just 70 years ago.

The signs of a warming planet are everywhere here in Grand Teton National Park. With retreating glaciers, lakes depleted by drought and forests parched by hotter temperatures, climate change is upending one of the great intact ecosystems in North America.

It’s a story playing out around the country. After more than a century of trying to preserve some of the world’s most wondrous natural landscapes, the National Park Service in recent years has shifted its mission away from absolute conservation. It is now making tough decisions about which plants and animals to save, and which they may need to let go. In Washington State, the glaciers on Mount Rainier are melting. In Maine, ecologists are working to save vulnerable trees in Acadia National Park.

“These things are happening so quickly, and they’re being sped up by all the human activity,” said Kirk Ryder, a longtime nature guide in the area who showed me and my family around the park yesterday morning. “Fire activity is increasing, and heat is stressing the wildlife.”

Up on Mount Moran, a hulking slab of granite in the middle of the range, two of the Tetons’ best-known glaciers were exposed to the searing sun. The Falling Ice Glacier and the Skillet Glacier have both retreated significantly in recent decades. Between 1967 and 2006, at least 25 percent of the park’s glacier cover disappeared, according to a park official.

We passed Jackson Lake, which is dammed and serves as a water source for agriculture in Idaho. Ryder explained how a few years ago, waters in the lake reached historically low levels. A lighter than usual snowpack the year before, followed by a spring and a summer devoid of the usual rains, meant that farmers and ranchers sucked the lake dry, leaving boats stranded in mud in Colter Bay, a popular tourist destination.

Over the past 110 years or so, the average daytime high temperatures in the Tetons have not changed significantly. But the nighttime low temperatures have increased between 3 and 4 degrees Fahrenheit.

As a result of this nighttime warming trend, the National Park Service expects the Grand Teton to see seven to 14 fewer weeks of below-freezing temperatures by late this century.

“There’s an overall warming trend that’s substantial and that is projected to continue,” said Andrew Hansen, an ecology professor at Montana State University who has studied the effects of climate change on the greater Yellowstone region, which includes the Tetons. “There are big implications for snow pack. There’s less precipitation falling as snow versus rain, and more rapid melting, and both of those lead to increased aridity. There’s more drought, there’s more drought-stressed forest and vegetation, more drying of fuels and hence increased fire risk.”
