I see you are quite the Animorphs knowledge authority.
Do you happen to know how Hork Bajir legs work?
Because they are described as "bent backwards" but also they seem to sit on objects (rocks, metal benches) almost like a human person. Also they have "knee blades", what are they good for? How do they not get in the way?
Oooh, wild speculation time!
Knee blades: work like crampons. Only instead of giving a human stabby toes to aid with climbing, they give the hork-bajir stabby ankles to help them grip trees. Among other things, this would enable hork-bajir to hold on with their legs while both hands are free to harvest bark. We know from #13 that Jara and Ket don't usually sit; they usually crouch. So my guess is that their legs fold up into a semi-relaxed position with the blades pointing out from the ends of the joint (where a human's kneecaps would be).
The knees themselves: my headcanon is that hork-bajir have that big "ankle" joint (like dogs) and that big "knee" joint (like elephants) and that ball-and-socket "hip" joint (like humans). So where a human's leg is sort of an L shape that can become a | or a < as needed, a hork-bajir's leg is sort of a Z shape that can become | or ≤ as needed. So the foot bones on a human are stretched out into the lowest part of the hork-bajir leg, the toe bones become the foot, but the tibias and femurs remain approximately the same size. The appearance still reads as "backward knee" to us humans, just like technically dogs have some ankle stuff going on but it still looks like "backward knee" when we watch one sploot on the ground.
There are a bunch of Scholastic-generated images of hork-bajir, some of which are more "we had about 10 minutes to airbrush a picture of Some Guy before this went to press" than others. But the one that best aligns to my headcanon is this one:
Tumblr media
There, Dak Hamee has two "knees" on each leg, and they go in opposite directions. He also has human-like hips and an ankle-like joint that allows him to flatten his talons fully on the ground. There are no blades on his legs in that drawing, but from book descriptions I think there would be one on the end of each of his four "knees." The hork-bajir on the tree in the background also appear to be holding on with their legs and tails. One also has both lower legs fully extended so the lower "knee" joint is fully straight the way a dog could never full straighten out the middle joint of their back leg. So if interpreting canon is a mix-and-match game anyway (since the book art never perfectly matches the book descriptions), then that's my headcanon for how hork-bajir knees work.

11, 18, 20, 37 for Bloody Crow :>
Someone’s curious 😈
Always happy to ramble about the beloved, of course <3
11. How did you “fall in love” with this character?
He kicked my ass dozens of times and I was smitten lol.
Okay, but in all seriousness, I was really impressed with how strong he was compared to so many other characters, he looked unique, and he was a total mystery. Naturally, I was hooked. Then I found the Bloody Crow cinematic series on YouTube and @endys’s incredible art at the same time. The ideas for who Crow was and his story hit a very specific chord with me, particularly the stuff with Eileen being like his adoptive mother. I’m soft for mother-son tragedy ;-;
After that, it was over. Crow was my beloved evil blorbo.
18. Do you prefer to see this character suffer or know peace? Angst or comfort? Both?
I guess I mostly go for the suffering/angst route as usual, but I love comfort when Eileen is involved. Yeah, Crow is gonna have a tragic downfall if I have anything to say about it, and it’ll be brutal, but I like bits of warmth in between with Eileen <3
20. Do you feel affectionate towards this character?
Oh hell yeah. Every time I draw him lol. I just wanna hug and ruffle his hair and squish and roll up in a blanket. (Wdym he is a murderer??).
37. Is your love for this character a secret from people you know in real life?
Ha, well the depth of it, yes. But some of my close family members know I am a sucker for vampire katana edgelords, so they have heard me talk about “Bloody Crow from Bloodborne” before and know I like him lol.
Thanks Jara <333

are you researching about pinochet's dictatorship in general, or a specific topic? It makes me sad but I'm thinking about also researching about it
Hi anon! I'm doing my thesis on Retablo de Yumbel, a play by Isidora Aguirre that talks about the Laja Massacre on 1973 under Pinochet's dictatorship. Sadly most of my sources are in Spanish, but the Rememberance and Human Rights Museum in Chile has an english page with first hand testimony and research on the topic from the 60s to present time.
If you want sources as in books, I can recommend Gabriel Salazar's books on the more historical side. But I am a literature major, and the topics that I have a special interest in are the remembrance and narratives around it, so my recommendations go more by that side
In books that are more "tellings" or fictions "Tengo miedo, Torero" (I'm afraid, my bullfighter) by Pedro Lemebel not only sheds light on the dictatorship by itself, but also on queer issues. Isabel Allende's "House of spirits" is absolutely translated and you *should* read her books. Nona Fernández's "La dimensión desconocida" (Unkown dimension) and "Space Invaders" are two of the more recognized modern books on the topic, which are fairly recent and are translated! So give them a read
If you want outright testimony "Tejas Verdes: diario de un campo de concentración en Chile" (Tejas Verdes: Diary of a concentration camp in Chile) by Hernán Valdés tells his own experience in the detention camp. Is the first testimony book about the time published in Chile and you'll find a lot of important stuff in there. Also books like "Amor, te sigo esperando" (My love, I still wait for you) is a new one about mothers and widows that are still looking for their loved ones who disappeared.
If you want theatre, Retablo de Yumbel is one of my favorite plays ever, but also "Los que van quedando en el camino" (The ones that were left behind on the road) also from Isidora Aguirre. Nona Fernández's "Liceo de Niñas" (Girl's High School), Ariel Dorfman's "La muerte y la doncella" (The death and the lady) (This one is noy only tranlsated but presented around the world. You can absolutely find a copy), and Marco Antonio de la Parra's "La puta madre" (Mother whore) are good reads, but I don't know if they're translated. Also I can recommend Juan Radrigán's work, and Jorge Díaz's.
If you want poetry, Raúl Zurita, Damiela Eltit, Nicanor Parra and Víctor Jara. I'm not much of a poetry guy, but I bet you can find a lot of their work translated.
If you look for art, the obligatory one is Miguel Lawner's "Venceremos!: Dos años en los campod de concentración de Chile" (We will win!: Two years in the concentration camps in Chile) which I know for a fact is translated to at least english and portuguese; those are the drawings that represent different scenes on Dawson Island and other camps were Lawner was. You can also look at the Rememberance and Human Rights museum in Chile with a pretty complete collection of art, both in the recognized art world and clandestine and domestic world.
If you're looking for movies, I think "NO" by Pablo Larraín is a very good watch that talks about the end of the dictatorship. Also "1976" by Manuella Martelli. Honorary mention to "Bear Story" by Gabriel Osorio for being a short film with no dialogue that also tackles the topic.
Also shot out to the series "Los 80" (The 80s), which is a chilean soap opera about a middle class family living through the dictatorship and everything that ensues. It's on Amazon Prime, tho I don't know if it's translated.
If you're looking for documentaries, I think "Colonia dignidad: Una secta alemana en el sur de Chile" (Dignidad Colony: A german cult in the south of Chile) is a very good watch. It's on Netflix and completely in english. Also "ReMastered: Massacre in the National Stadium", also on Netflix, talks about the murder of Víctor Jara (Tho there's new developments on the case). But the ultimate ones are everything that Patricio Guzmán ever did. "La Batalla de Chile" (Chile's battle) a series of 3 documentaries that tell the story of the country between 1972 and 1973 on the historical front. In the remembrance front he has "El botón de nácar" (The nacre button) about Villa Grimaldi and the Death Flights and "Nostalgia for the Light" about the Atacama desert, the concentration camp there and other searchings that were done there.
I hope this helps a bit to start. Sorry if I went a little bit overboard, and I do wish you the best researching the topic. These are all off the top of my head so I definitely forgot some important ones lol

Mermay! Axolotl mermaid
I made the axolotl and mermaid the color axolotls would normally be in the wild because the pink albino ones wouldn't survive in the wild.
I "stole" my friends iPad to draw my very first digital art. Its a little rough because like I said I have never drawn digitally plus I've never drawn a mermaid or an axolotl before BUT I still wanted to participate.
I like how the little axolotl turned out😊
The mermaid axolotl is supposed to be finding/searching for stuff on the ground
I think @jara-l-art did a prompt list for mermay so thats where I got the idea for a axolotl mermaid

Horizon Zero Dawn Review
Tumblr media
The game that critics have been raving about for years and I just haven't played. I heard a lot of people say "this needs a movie" but they say that about any game that dares to be a little bit cinematic because I personally disagree.
That first part is rough, the story seems so in your face, predictable and bland but I think the problem is that it didn't know how to put in its exposition. I think it naturally builds up as it goes on, getting bigger and broader, it's just those first experiences that can be a slog because you're pretty much learning what style you're going to play in.
I got more or less everything I expected, crafting, a skill tree, various weapons. What I didn't expect though are dialogue options. You can choose normally up to four paths, an intelligent one, a compassionate one, and a straightforward one. You don't have to worry about the stress of trying to reach a specific ending because there's really only one, the only thing that affects it is the amount of people that are in it. So does that make the choices irrelevant? Yes and no because there are different dialogue options and like I said, which means that you can get certain characters to like you more given the option you choose but not in the same way that relationship points work and I definitely felt the draw to do that whenever I came across my first side-quest.
Tumblr media
Side-quests are interesting, I love tracking things in games, though it's rare that you actually get the chance to do it and here you have a good amount of opportunities. Is that all though? Far from it. I actually found myself searching for side-quests because the first two were so satisfying. It really only began to show its hand a bit more after those quests. As I mentioned, there are a lot more RPG elements than I first imagined but it starts to send you on scavenger hunts, especially that Dreamwillow one, that one I actually laughed out loud at every time I was turned away. It also starts to gatekeep to where it recommends that you be a certain level which is...odd? I mean at face value it looks like you could rock basically any combat situation that isn't context sensitive. Leveling up gives you abilities but they're more like Deus Ex on that front, where it's just for preference and upgrading, not necessarily strength. The only thing you improve on offense wise basically boils down to having the right materials or units to buy weapons then a matter of finding modifications. Other than that, leveling up seems to just increase your health. It really just depends on the quest too because I'll play one above my level and be fine then play another that's actually under my level and feel stuck.
Now I only played it on normal mode so something like "Ultra Hard" is bound to be more demanding but as far as actual side quest content, I feel like they have potential but just need tweaked, give me more stuff for major characters that affects their standing with me. Rather than having each quest be contained in its own story, have it affect you later in the game, let your actions be shown, give it rewards and consequences. There are some really great side-quests but there are also some crappy ones, it doesn't pass that threshold that most RPGs fall under or anything. However, I did find myself doing side-quests at my own free will and the ones that I didn't like or couldn't do at the time, I just skipped and focused on something else, I felt a lot more freedom with this game, like I didn't feel forced to grind or do a certain number of side-quests or really do anything. It encourages you to explore and play the way you want to play and I respect the heck out of that. Maybe it's different for other players though.
Perhaps my favorite actual side thing was the Cauldrons for those who actually played this, you'll know why. For those who didn't, just know that it's cool and let it be a surprise for when you go to one. You might expect these big set-pieces and bosses like Uncharted or GoW, but it's not really like that. I genuinely think that this is more video-gamey than it lets on which certainly takes up its runtime. One addition to side-quests that I would like to see is one where you don't know it's happening. For example, in this game, you'll come across random hunters who are attacking or being attacked by machines but rather than just going on about your day and them going on about their's, I want to fight off the machine and the person say "You saved my life, my name's Jara, I live in the town nearby and want to repay you." so you go there and there's trouble so it starts up a side-quest. Now don't get me wrong, there are PLENTY of instances of people getting attacked actually being a mission but most of the time someone in town will just tell you "I haven't seen this person in a while, can you go check on them for me?" It's the art of subtlety and also just doing a good deed and getting rewarded for it. It's a conscious choice and split decision rather than just another checkmark on your list to complete.
Tumblr media
Now I won't bother listing the characters and rating them but there's a certain aspect that has me really enthused So, Aloy is an outcast and a lot of these side missions and scenarios reflect her, you'll see the way she can relate with other characters, making it almost poetic in a subliminal kind of way. Then they add this tribal and futuristic setting to it where Aloy acts as the medium, there are parts of the game where she questions the tribe because they cut themselves off from technology and just don't know any better and we as a viewer know that but having the main character view things in 'our' lens is pretty genius. To top that off, they give her enough personality to be her own character while giving us enough power to influence her so that we ourselves can REFLECT WITH HER. It's not her character that I'm impressed with, it's the layout of the story.
So, how is the main story? It's kind of like the Flood scenario in Halo if I'm being honest. I'm not going to spoil anything but it's passable, like I said, it's not like an Uncharted and it's not like a movie. The visuals just look good at times (I took all the pictures in this review myself and so much more!). I'd call it a futuristic/tribal mix between Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Skyrim but I see elements of a lot of things. (Also since it's post apoctalypic, you find items that we see in modern day, like how they call keys, "chimes"! They think they're windchimes because there are no more cars! I love that!)
It actually does a pretty good job at being an open world considering that there are tons of things to do on your routes as well as collect but it's not so much so that it seems unfeasible, as I said, I found myself doing a good chunk of the side stuff just because it was fun to do and I'm not even close to a completionist for any game. If you mess up, healing plants will still be there. As long as you save, enemy parts will still be there. A place can be cleared out and conquered so that enemies don't come back. The actual towns are peaceful so you can't get mangled by any bots outside of scripted instances.
The graphics are pretty good but I can see some error here and there, nothing necessarily game breaking but the animations and AI are definitely janky at times. It's pretty obvious from the get-go but I'll do my best to specify and give constructive criticism on what I found wrong with certain aspects of the game. Rost is slow, like slower than walking speed but that's not to speak for all NPCs, some run, some you don't need to follow, it was really just him. I've had NPCs who fight but miss every single time on simple enemies (that might not be a bug, that might just be a funny bit that someone decided to add in). Sabretooths have jumped through walls (granted the walls were kinda broken but I'm not sure if those big boys can fit when they can barely find the entrance) I found myself jumping to a ledge or on a rope but not land it and just drop (it really boils down to loosening the hit box for that). Which to add on to that, I would like more places to climb and jump to in general (other than stupid mountains). I felt like there wasn't really enough that I could climb and the places that I could, could've been a bit more obvious that I could, maybe even make it viewable with your focus if you don't want it to be visually outstanding. There's a day and night cycle and while I like that, I found some of the contrast to be annoying because I could be staring a ladder right in the face and not even know it sometimes because it would be so dark. I'm not going to complain too much about it because I didn't turn my brightness up, I just left it at default and I would assume the PS5 version fixes some of those little things.
Tumblr media
Now, this one is kind of a gray area: Hiking up mountains. Skyrim, Fallout, and Death Stranding went too far and gave little to no barriers. They had you looking for sweet spots that weren't there in order to cheese your way through an area either on or off a beaten path. But I would compare this to something like GTA where it's not as bad and does have its limits but might need tightened up some more because I can certainly get to places that lead to nowhere.
I've made headshots that don't make contact or damage while using precision. Part of that problem was that they could be high up in a tower (which have spikes sticking out) and I would hit ABOVE the logs, to make a headshot but since it was in that vicinity, it registered that as the spikes' hitbox so it wouldn't cause any damage and just alert the enemy (same if I was in the tower, looking down). Input lag where I hit up button on the D-Pad to regain health and I have to keep pressing it. If I had to guess, you have to meet the requirements of not taking damage, staying still, etc in order for it to actually work but it doesn't really have a reason to do that and it doesn't "tell" you that those are the requirements (as far as I know).
During the final boss, one of the enemies hit me into a rock wall, trapping me inside of it and the boss was already half health so I really didn't want to have to restart (I also didn't know how far back the checkpoint was) so I kept shooting stuff and eventually the boss destroyed the wall, allowing me to get out (timed section, by the way). There have been a few times where a tree or leaf or something is obstructing a cutscene and sometimes there will be a mech in the background screaming over the NPC talking, which I'm sure is due to the cutscenes being real-time which is still pretty impressive. Now are these errors all the time? No, not at all, I'm just pointing out that some times these things happened and that I felt it needed ironed out but I wouldn't call this half baked or an unfinished product or anything, it's nowhere near that level. I get that there are so many NPCs that it's hard to account for them all with facial animations but whenever they're talking, it seems pretty static and sometimes the lips don't line up. There's this one guy who says that he got lost in a sandstorm but he's standing in snow. Again, little nitpicks in an otherwise great game.
Now, I got this game for free as a Playstation promotion but that doesn't necessarily mean it'll be great, I played a little bit of that Ratchet & Clank reboot that was offered and I wasn't impressed, I quit after the first few worlds and was glad I didn't buy it at launch, (despite being a classic PS2 R&C fan) but we're not here to review that. I also played Abzu and loved it but it was short so it was definitely worth a play but maybe not 60$ (I actually think it's 20$ at this point though). With this game, it's the whole complete edition with DLC and everything, it has the length, so it really just boils down to "Would I have spent money on it otherwise?"
I think I would've if I knew more about it because I think it just got better and better after that first part of the game. It's marketed a bit differently than what I ended up getting but I found myself pouring hours into this game and loving it for one reason or another. I actually bought Shadow of the Colossus along with it (which is considered a cult classic) but I liked Horizon so much better, definitely worth its full price in my opinion. (So your promotion worked on me Sony, congrats) It has its problems but the potential is there and I feel like a sequel would probably iron out a lot of my troubles with it, so it's definitely a franchise worth investing into.
If you're interested in what I thought of the DLC alone (if you didn't get the Ultimate edition and are wondering if the extra content is worth it) I have a separate post that goes into that here.

In which a girl must steal to survive on the planet Tatooine. Being an orphan and without a home, the only way out that she can find at 8 years old is to infiltrate different places where people usually stay or rest and steal everything that has a price.
Everything changes when she tries to rob a well-known war hero.
That day Kiara Lang decided to check the vehicles of the diners of a local restaurant. Tatooine is not a tourist planet, only some come, but they don't stay for long, so she must act fast and run away. With great skill and experience, the girl disarmed the ships, kept the valuable and went to the next.
She was almost done with everyone, only one X-Wing was missing. It did not seem to be very large, compared to other ships she had seen, but the little one couldn’t leave any unchecked, her food depends on this. She started her routine and put the objects in her bag and when she was about to leave, she heard a whisper.
She looked everywhere fearful that someone would discover her, after a few seconds she found no one, but again, she heard it.
She couldn’t really understand what that voice was saying, in fact, she didn’t know if they were words, there was something that called her, something that prevented her from walking away, so she returned and opened the capsule that protected the passenger and sat on the pilot’s spot.
She watched the control panel without knowing very well how it works, but she didn't care much. She took the lever that was in front of her and moved it from side to side, and for a few minutes, pretended that she was in a battle in space, made noises simulating the weapons being fired, and moved to avoid an attack, then her laugher flooded the ship.
‘It would be great to be able to go to space and know how to fly one of these things. Out of here.’ She thought.
But all yearning was interrupted… by the owner of the X-Wing.
“Your mother didn't teach you not to take what is not yours?” Says a male voice, startling her.
She peeked her head to look down. A blond-haired man looked at her with his arms crossed. The little girl's face turned red, she sighed and slowly got off the ship.
“Something to say in your defense, girl?”
“Sorry, sir,” She said in a whisper.
What the little girl did not know is that the man was not upset, but intrigued.
“How could you open my ship without activating the alarm?” She dragged her foot a little, drawing circles in her place, and put her hands behind her back. The man raised his eyebrows. “Or do you prefer an officer to ask these questions?”
The girl raised her head and with no alternative, pulled out an old screwdriver and gave it to him.
The man analyzes the object, at first glance it seems only a screwdriver, but someone had altered it. He didn't understand how something like this could open his X-Wing, but it didn't matter.
He returned it. The blond saw that, at the time the girl put the screwdriver in her bag, other parts of vehicles were there.
He knew the girl had something special, he could feel it. He walked away a little to observe her better: her attire consisted of a blouse, which was too large, she’d tied the edges with an old rope. Her pants reached almost to the knees and her shoes were worn-out. She was dirty,  her black hair held in a ponytail.
“Where are your parents?” He asked.
“If I knew, I would be with them,” she said.
She was telling the truth. The man decided to enter the girl's mind: Orphaned, she was left at the door of an old woman who raised her for the first 4 years of life, but died. The girl has been alone since then. Another detail that he noticed was that he could not see who had left her at the door, there was something blocking him.
The man knelt down to meet her and gently took her by the chin to observe her features better. They reminded him of someone in detail, but he couldn't remember, her gray eyes looked at him with fear and confusion. The girl frowned. They had never reacted like this before when they discovered her. The blond withdrew his hand and smiled.
“My name is Luke Skywalker.”
“Why didn't you call the officer? I stole parts of your ship, it’s illegal,” She said making him laugh.
“Did you hear or feel anything when you entered my ship?” He asked, remembering the actions he had seen in the little girl's mind.
She was surprised, how did he know that?
She nodded.
“Your ship must have something broken,” He smiled.
“It's not the ship, girl. Hasn't it happened to you before?” The girl now looked worried.
“Do I have something broken?” She said scared.
The man show his head.
“I know what's wrong with you, little one. But it is very difficult to explain and we need time,” He said, getting up, “But first I must ask you, would you be willing to travel with me? I will take you to a place where you can understand it better.”
She frowned.
"No, I don't know you. How do I know it's not a trick to hurt me?" She said walking away.
“Smart girl,” He scratched his chin.
Although she could sense that this man would not harm her, the whisper told her that she would be fine, but she didn’t want to take a risk.
“I am a member of an Order called Jedi, do you know what they are?”
“Jara said they were protectors and could do tricks. She also said that they had their lightsabers,” She said, now interested.
He laughed, nodding.
“Yes, we can also hear and feel something called ‘The Force’ which is everywhere and you can do it too, girl.”
“Am I... Am I a Jedi?”
“It’s what I expect. I would like to show you how to be one, but you must come with me.”
She bited her lower lip. ‘Could I finally get out of here?’
“Other children will also be there, you're not alone, Kiara.”
She was surprised once again, how did he know her name? It must be a Jedi trick. The little girl smiled and he smiled back at her, as if they had both thought the same.
“Okay.”
The man offers his hand and she takes it.
“But first,” They both stopped, “You must return what you stole.”
“Oh, come on!” The girl complained making Luke laugh.

STuff I was ranting at Ach about with Animorphs
like hell, these kids would all have died in book 3 if not for a bunch of coincidences and Tobias failing at his suicide attempt
book 2? Jake and Rachel are trapped in morph as a flea and cat respectively and likely killed by Visser 3. Marco drops the fuck out of the fight immediately and Cassie and Tobias cain't get shit done
listen until book 3 Cassie didn't even have a half decent battle morph, she said she was good with horse when they whent to the zoo to aquire shit
hell, if not for Rachel they never really would have started doing shit about the whole alien invasion
and frankly if Tobias wasn't being a dick and eating Cassie's patients (and damn wasn't he lucky that her parents didn't catch his ass) they never would have talked about their weird dreams and wouldn't have gone looking for Ax
And Ax refuses to fucking learn how to  control his human morph and lit got them chased by some controllers in his first narrated book. Controllers that should have remembered Jake and Marco's faces b/c they saw them clearly
ANd hge refuses to fucking learn to after that experience
ANd the kids keep taking him to public fucking places when they know he's gonna draw attention to himself
these kids should not have lived
like book 7? If not for the Ellimist they would have died from being eaten as cockroaches by a taxxon. Like?  motherfuckers.
book 5? If yeerk leadership was in any way competent? the kids get infested. Hell! It would likely be in Visser 1's best intrest to let Visser 3 get promoted so they can get reassigned to Earth b/c they're better at covert warfare and would rather be working on it.
Visser 3 is better at open warfare, is the yeerk leading expert on andalites, and has so many monster morphs. They should be fucking shit up on Leera.
would mean making villians somewhat competent. Like not discussing shit in english were they could be accidently overheard and all of them speak and understand fucking Galard
like the yeerks don't even refer to eachother by their actual names in series just going by the name of their host even when alone amonsgt their own kind
just I'm thinking these kids die off very quickly
gonna flip some coins but like
they should not be surviving this shit
and I hate the ellimist/crayak stuff
just b/c you make a deus ex machina into a character doesn't mean ya didn't just use a deus ex machina
also for 'we don't interfere' the ellimist directly leads people into doing what he wants. Fucker snatched Elfangor out of one timeling to put him where he wants him to make the animorphs
actually showed the animorphs shit he wants them to do
also he's supposed to be our 'big good' force but uh he made the andalites and condones their shit. He created the animorphs and condones their shit (hey there mercora), as far as I can ken the reason he 'liberated' Jara and Ket and lead Tobias to them was to foster the creation of Toby, make the horks indebted to the animorphs to act as eventiual cannon fodder for them

Demolition: Removing Walls Follow these guidelines for a safe takedown.
Getting walls down safely and effectively rates a fair 2 to 2.5 on my Cuss-O-Meter scale, which ranges from 1 to 5, with 5 the toughest. You need to move carefully and have a plan. Follow the steps below, and start by heeding the Live Load Caveat.
Live Load Caveat
Step 1 in removing a wall is to determine if it's load-bearing. A good rule of thumb is that if the wall is toward the middle of the house and running perpendicular to the joists above, it's carrying weight—and lots of it.
Load-bearing walls rate a solid 5 on the Cuss-O-Meter because of the extra effort involved. Posts and headers (there are several variations that are beyond the scope of this article) must be installed to replace the wall. This isn't super advanced carpentry, but there are lots of details and heavy lifting that have to be approached properly or you're basically guaranteed problems.
When I remove load-bearing walls, I frame temporary support walls on either side of the wall I'm removing, adding a diagonal strut to beef them up. The "temp walls" carry the load while I remove the original wall and replace it with king studs, jack studs and a properly sized header.
I recommend pulling a permit for this project. First, you're supposed to, and second, when you submit the drawings detailing your framing, the inspector has a chance to double-check you. It may turn out that the floor system below may need more beef or blocking, or the header may need to be engineered lumber instead of solid sawn to achieve your desired span, or you may need more king studs than you'd planned on.
Prepare for Takedown – Wall Removal
Non-load-bearing walls' main function is to house mechanicals and serve as a substrate for hanging drywall that divides the rooms. If you want that division outta there, the key is to pick them apart smart. Cover the floor below the wall to be demoed (both sides) with a big piece of cardboard or 1/4-inch plywood to protect the finish. Drop-cloth the rest of the room if you're worried about dust.
Determine if you have to deal with electrical lines, plumbing or HVAC. Opening up a wall you've planned to move only to find a big honkin' HVAC chase in there will ruin your day.
Wall Takedown
The goal isn't wholesale devastation. It's to leave a substrate that's as easy as possible to build from. Here's a page from my demo playbook:
Drywall/plaster. Remove drywall or plaster to expose the studs. If only part of the wall is coming out, say for a door, cut the left- and right-side plumb lines. Punch a hole in the center of the wall and then wiggle the drywall back and forth; it's more likely to come off in large pieces than in small chunks. If you're saving the ceiling, score it where it meets the wall using a utility knife; cutting the tape minimizes damage as you separate the pieces.
Plaster comes off in what a guy I knew called "kibbles and bits." Huge clouds of fine dust happen here, too. I haul plaster in 6-mil contractor trash bags. It doesn't take much plaster in a bag to make it very heavy.
Studs. When possible, use a reciprocating saw with a demolition blade to cut nails between the bottom plate and the stud bottom. This frees the stud, which you can pry free from the nails above. If you don't have room to wrangle an 8-foot stud, cut the stud in the middle and then pry out each half.
Plates. Remove the top and bottom plates. Use a recip saw with a demo blade. Usually, you can break the seal between the wood and the nail by prying. Sometimes it's necessary to cut the nails. Tips
Here are some general pointers to help make the job easier—and safer.
When moving materials through the house, be very careful.
Double-bagging plaster isn't a bad idea.
Watch out for nails, both sticking out of plaster lath and stuck in studs and plates.
A dust mask is a nice barrier between demo dust and your respiratory system. A long-sleeve shirt and pants are also nice for your skin.
If you find wire lath under your plaster, be extra-careful. This stuff makes a scalpel look like a Twinkie.

Charting A Course
for @pillarspromptsweekly #22 Roll for It. I got Adaryc, key, and helplessness
Adaryc was eight when he got his first sword. It was a plain thing, unadorned and rather dull. His father just wanted him to get a feel for the weight of a blade. He expected that, like any good Readceran, his son would serve their country to the best of his ability. And for the Cendmyr men, that service had always taken the form of the military. So his son--his only son--was going to do the family proud, wasn’t he?
He wanted to. Patriotism near the equal of his father’s burned in Adaryc’s chest, even at his tender age. So he took to the family’s vorlas field, swinging his sword fervently at the scarecrow. The dull blade couldn’t so much as nick the fabric, of course, but it got him used to the amount of effort it took to swing a sword, how it felt to hit your target, how much momentum you’d have if you missed.
“Dunno how good you’ll get practicin’ against that,” a voice commented one day, and Adaryc nearly dropped the sword as he spun to face the speaker. She grinned cheerfully at him from the fence that separated their families’ farm.
“Not very, if you insist on distractin’ me,” he grumbled. “Don’t you have chores, Saela? Or anything else to do other than bother me?”
“No,” Saela said brightly, ducking through the fence. “But I could help ya practice. Jara shooed me outta the way for a couple hours. An’ it’s only wood, but I have a practice sword, too.”
Adaryc only hesitated for a moment. Saela’s eternally chipper nature could be a bit wearing, but she was the only kid his age for miles, and he knew she wanted to join the army too when she got older. “Sure, I guess.”
“Great!” She untangled herself from the fence rungs and bolted back to her house, nearly tripping over the hem of her dress. “Be right back!”
Adaryc ducked through the fence once she was gone. He doubted his mother would like it if they tore up the vorlas fields sword fighting. Better to do that in the open. There was a fair chance they’d wind up filthy, but at least they wouldn’t destroy their families’ livelihoods.
Saela was back in just a couple minutes, her hair tied back in a haphazard braid and her skirts tucked up just enough she wouldn’t trip over them. She twirled her wooden sword before leveling it at him in a two-handed grip. “Prepare to be vanquished!”
He grinned and raised his sword. “In your dreams!”
Both of them were laughing hard enough they missed with the first swing. After focusing better, they fought to a dirty, dusty draw. No form or strategy on either part, just two eight year olds having fun.
“Good fight,” Saela panted as they sat in the dirt catching their breath.
“Same to you,” Adaryc nodded. He glanced at the nasty bruise on her arm. “An’ I really am sorry about that.”
She shrugged. “It was an accident, an’ I was sorta askin’ for it, leavin’ a hole like that. I’ll remember to guard better next time.”
“It won’t save you,” he teased, kicking a small puff of dust in her direction.
Saela coughed and kicked one back. “You didn’t win!”
“Yeah, well, neither did you,” Adaryc retorted.
“True,” she conceded cheerfully, rubbing the bruise. “I’m gonna see if Jara knows anything to put on this to make it less obvious. I don’t wanna get you in trouble, ‘specially since this was my idea.”
“Thanks. Has she been workin’ with the healer long enough to know stuff like that?”
“Sure,” Saela shrugged. “It’s not like I want her to reattach a limb, Adaryc, just make a bruise go away. I think four months’ apprenticing is enough to know that.”
“If you say so.” He traced lines in the dirt with his finger. “Thanks for helpin’ me practice.”
“Nat a problem.” She scrambled to her feet and offered him her hand. “It was fun.”
Adaryc accepted the help. “It was fun. Maybe... we can do it again sometime? Not tomorrow, I’m helpin’ my mother take a load of vorlas t’ the dyemaker. But later?”
“That’d be fun,” Saela nodded. “For now we should clean up, or I’m pretty sure both our moms will yell.”
As if to punctuate her words, Adaryc heard his mother calling for him and waved a final hasty goodby as he scrambled toward the house.
<<<>>>
Adaryc was ten when the sickness swept through. It wasn’t a plague, not really, just an illness that claimed many victims among vorlas farmers. Almost as if it held a particular malevolence toward them. But that was just superstition, like Watchers or bîaŵics, this was just an illness, even if it was one that settled in drained your strength. Most who caught it only lasted a week or two before even breathing was too hard and they just... stopped.
Adaryc didn’t catch it. His mother, however, did. And a few days later, so did Saela. Father was serving guard duty along the border, so caring for Mother fell solely to Adaryc. He was so busy with that and tending the fields that he didn’t even realize Saela was sick until he went to ask Jara if she had any tips for fighting the illness.
She did, but cautioned that even with the help of the herbs she told him about, odds for survival were low. “But I’ll pray for your mother if you pray for my sister?” she added with a tired smile. This far from larger towns, her two years’ training with the healer was the most anyone had.
Adaryc wondered if Jara wished her master hadn’t flitted off on some errand a few months ago even as he nodded. “Of course.” He didn’t mention that Saela was one of his only friends, or that obviously he cared about her.
But he did pray. Eothas, Hylea, any of the gods he thought would listen. Spare my mother, spare my friend. And it seemed to work. His mother, hardy as she was, recovered.
Saela did not. Adaryc spent the week between his mother’s recovery and Saela’s death helping Jara, feeling as helpless as he ever had in his life. Nothing they tried, nothing Jara concocted, worked, and he watched the desperation and exhaustion grown in tandem on her face.
“I don’t know enough,” she finally admitted one day when Saela coughed up blood. “Master Hendyr promised to come back and teach me more, but for now... I can’t do anything, and my sister’s going to die.”
Adaryc didn’t know what to say, and that was almost as bad as not being able to help. “....I”m sorry.”
“I’m still going to try,” she said determinedly. “It might work. Never discount pure, dumb luck. But our chances aren’t good.”
Try as she did, her prediction proved correct, and Saela died just a couple days later.
<<<>>>
Adaryc was eleven when word of Waidwen started to spread. His parents were initially skeptical of the claims a vorlas farmer, of all people, had seen Eothas, let alone been incarnated or possessed or whatever by Him. But as word kept spreading, Waidwen’s power kept growing, they began to wonder.  Finally, when they heard Waidwen had deposed the colonial governor and been crowned Divine King, Father left to go see if this man was everything he was said to be.
“For emergencies,” he said, pressing the key to the weapon cabinet into Adaryc’s hand. “Help your mother, do your part, and be good.” He smiled fondly and ruffled Adaryc’s hair. “I won’t be gone long, gods willing.”
He never came home. Instead, they got a letter, full of effusive praise for St. Waidwen, who was definitely what he claimed to be. Father had pledged his service right there in the throne room and now served as a royal guard. The letter was accompanied by enough silver Mother actually swore, which Adaryc had never heard her do.  He wished he could go serve with Father, but ‘his part’ was to stay and protect the farm, so that’s what he would do. That and ‘be good’, which he did by sharing some of the money with Jara. In the year since Saela died, her mother had struggled with melancholy and her father had turned to drink. Fortunately, he was a sullen and withdrawn drunk rather than abusive and violent(small blessings), but this still meant them living off what what little Jara could make as a healer. At least until her parents began to recover from their grieving process.
Jara thanked him with a tired smile and took the money gratefully. “There’s no insult in charity kindly given,” she said, one hand pressed against her growling stomach.
Adaryc and his mother received many letters over the next months. All of them came with money. Mother figured it was a portion of Father’s wages. Adaryc had no reason to believe she was wrong. With her permission, he gave some of the coin to Jara each time. Until finally, one day Jara told him her father had gone back to work. She insisted he keep the money.
It was good timing on her part. A few weeks later, Mother got a letter with a black border and a fancy seal that made her cry when she read it. Adaryc didn’t need to ask. Father wouldn’t be coming home.
<<<>>>
Adaryc was sixteen when the former armsmaster came to town. Like every other boy-and a few girls--his age, he barely gave the man time to settle in before asking(begging, practically) to be taught. It would be nice to learn how to fight without going far away from home. He tried not to think of Saela, how she would’ve raced him into town and probably won, eager to learn martial skill as well. There were so many potential students, the Armsmaster--and that’s all he’ll let them call him--started a school. Mother heard before Adaryc could tell her, and insisted he attend. “I know you want to follow your father’s footsteps,” she said. “While I’ll miss your help, this is what you’re supposed to do.”
It wasn’t long before he was one of the top students in class. As they got better, became more cohesive as a fighting force and worked together, the class decided to form a militia. They called themselves the Iron Flail.
<<<>>>
Adaryc was twenty one the first time he saw a person’s soul. It was an accident; caused by a solid collision with Alene during a sparring match. They knocked heads, and shortly after seeing stars, Adaryc was overwhelmed by feelings not his own. I have to prove myself and a flashed glimpse of unfamiliar, disapproving faces. It was all gone just as fast as it came, and he did his best to convince himself it was a weird, one time thing as a result of being concussed. Alene and all the spectators probably thought him shaky for the same reason.
But he knew what was said about soul-seers. Watchers. They were almost as reviled and mistrusted in Readceras as worshipers of Magran. He couldn’t be one. He wasn’t.
And then it happened again a few days later with Mother. And he couldn’t deny it any longer. Or make it go away, badly as he wished. He could hide it, though. Which he did, successfully. for quite a while. A few people knew, of course. Mother. Alene and his other close friends in the Flail. But he did his best to bury his abilities and use them as sparsely as possible. It wasn’t an ideal situation, but it was the best he could do. And it worked. For now.
<<<>>>
Adaryc was twenty six when he saw the army in his dreams. A vague but definite threat rolling down from the White March like an avalanche to crush Readceras to dust. He woke breathing hard and with a newfound burning desperation to protect his still-weakened homeland from the obvious Dyrwood threat.
He had recently taken over leadership of the Iron Flail, which gave him resources. Assuming he could find a way to convince them of the urgency without sounding crazy. I saw it in a vision was hardly iron-clad proof, but he’d proved himself as a soldier and a leader well enough that hopefully his word would be sufficient.
It was for his lieutenants. Alene not only believed him but started offering plans. All of which Adaryc nodded along to--they were fine but not stellar--until she mentioned the White Forge. That was a plan; claim the Forge and its cannons, be in a prime position to handle the threat when it emerged. The White Forge was the key to protecting everything he cared about. And sure, the village of Stalwart clung tenaciously to their prize, but he could deal with them. He would not be left helpless again. With that decided, he resolved to tell his men and depart in the morning. Their course was set.
------------------------------------------------------
Disclaimer: been a while since I played WM2, so I maaay have forgotten something. But I really like Adaryc, so I wanted to write about him. I know the game describes him as a younger man(I did watch a LP of the confrontation with him for a few details, but not everything), but humans in Eora can live to 180, so I think 26 still counts as young. :P
