Here’s a fic for everyone who’s getting pissed off with the Saffi situation… everything below lifted straight from the fic’s notes ⬇️

I need to vent and this little fic is my way of doing it.

Why?

Months back Jeri Ryan replied to me on Twitter before S3 started.

I had asked if TNG returning would result in Saffi being sidelined and she replied “Nobody’s sidelined, don’t worry. VERY cool story lines for both characters 👍”

Now I’m only up to 3.6 and I feel the exact opposite is happening.

So I wrote this because I just wanted to have a pop at the whole thing… Infact I wanna have a pop at Jeri for the damn tweet but since I’m not brave enough I’ll use this fic to have a pop at Seven instead 😅

Inspired by 3.1’s Raffi line of “My girlfriend left me” (was it a cover story? Who the hell knows?) and Chakotay’s parable of the scorpion that he relayed to Janeway in Voyager’s “Scorpion” (the two parter that introduced Seven).

While I loathe the Seven/Chakotay relationship as much as anyone else, I did think this would be an interesting interaction in light of season 3.

I will admit I don’t dislike Chakotay. While he is rather dull, I always found him to be the reassuring quiet and sane voice to Janeway’s often batshit insanity.

So I hope you enjoy this somewhat different view of Seven and Raffi’s relationship.

I know you all love Seven and this is going to be a really unpopular opinion but why was Rios' entire storyline's only purpose was to serve a white character's story? She stole his role in the show. She stole TWO of his ships ffs. That final scene? That was supposed to be CRIS! This was supposed to be his MOMENT to shine.

Why couldn't we get both? Why couldn't Seven later have been a Captain of a different ship and Rios had kept his own? Why was his storyline merely a vehicle to get Seven in the Captain's chair?

They got this amazing Latino Captain and couldn't write him off fast enough to serve the white legacy character.

I still love Seven, I really do. I am really happy for all the Saffi shippers and everything you got this season. It's just that... there is a pattern this season regarding the treatment of the white characters versus the characters of colour and it just leaves a bitter taste in my mouth

Jerico didnt say a Word, only pressed further against his chest and nodded-- I...I love you too-- she said before breaking into heavy sobbing.

Once she was calmer, he gave her a glass of water and kissed her, quietly holding her until she fell asleep.

He took one last look at her before falling asleep. She was a rosemary indeed because he could never forget such gentle soul.

the world was not a warm, kind place for young jeri. born to a mother that struggled with alcoholism and drug addiction, and a father that was nowhere to be found, loneliness was a familiar feeling. it was the only one she truly knew. the woman wasn’t abusive, but she was far from nurturing. it was almost like she forgot she had a child, surprise painting her face anytime her daughter would walk into the room. jeri learned about things long before she should have. as a toddler she’d watch her mother snort coke off of the coffee table. she would bring strange men over for money. many mornings the little girl would wake up to find her laying in her own puke in the living room floor. in elementary school she was rolling her over on her side to check for her pulse. it wasn’t until her preteen years that she realized this was not normal, most children didn’t have to deal with parents like that. she desperately wanted an out, but there was no way out. because she didn’t want to be home, especially when her mother was throwing one of her many parties, she often found herself on the beach. the ocean was jeri’s safe haven. she would spend hours among the waves, watching for fish and hermit crabs. she felt a connection with the marine life she didn’t feel with people. she could understand them. not their thoughts, she couldn’t hold conversations with them, but she could feel their feelings. they seemed to pick up on this and would even allow her to touch them as they swam by. when she was fifteen years old, her mother was caught in the middle of a drug deal. she was arrested, refused to get help and lost custody of her daughter. even in foster care, especially in foster care, the beach was the place she could always be found. it felt more like home than any home she had ever known. she had friends among the saltwater creatures. her concern for them was what led her to the local rehabilitation aquarium, where she was quick to become a volunteer. every day after school, she would show up at the center, trading her swimming time for helping injured turtles and the like. that was where she met lilo. after nearly two years of working together, one conversation led to another and lilo found out the girl was about to age out of the system. she  immediately looked into the adoption process. she had already taken her under her wing, taught her so many things, and she cared about the teenager deeply. it was a close call, but she legally became a pelekai a few months before her eighteenth birthday. though she didn’t find the family until later on in life, jeri doesn’t mind. she feels like it’s where she belongs, and she’s glad that she doesn’t have to go through life alone anymore. the world is no longer cold and hard, she no longer feels lost among humanity, no longer does she stick out like a sore thumb. she has a world of opportunities. she’s excited for the future. it’s like the first nearly two decades of her life she was just existing, and now, she can live.

*annoyance: any gender, any age. she doesn’t mean to be rude, but there is something about this person that just gets on her very last nerve. best friend: aaliya van dort. the two of them grew up together. aaliya is one of jeri’s favorite people in the entire world. lately she’s just been thinking a lot about how beautiful she is, how she’s the coolest person she knows, and maybe getting lost in her eyes, maybe... just a little... it’s nothing. maybe. confidants: alessi paguro. jeri isn’t an open book about her past, but when it comes to alessi, it’s easy for her to be straightforward. she relies on them, her go-to vent person, and she hopes ale sees her the same. *ex girlfriend: female, whatever age. this could’ve been when they were much younger or more recently, depending on the age of your character. we can go the ‘still friends’ route or make it as angsty as possible, because, well, who doesn’t love angst? *first kiss: any gender, close in age. was it awkward? probably. but she regrets none of her decisions. this could be a fun little plot. honorary friends: the squad’s kids. lilo wasn’t about to have children that weren’t friends with mollie’s, gracie’s, mavis’, logan’s and dani’s. not a chance. sister: irene pelekai. polar opposites, the two of them became friends before family, only growing closer after her adoption. jeri adores her little sister. she would break someone’s neck for her, no second thoughts. *study buddy: any gender, any age. even if they’re in different grades and majoring in different things, they enjoy doing their homework together... probably snacking and goofing off more than actually working, but, you know. mother: lilo pelekai. jeri sometimes wonders how she wasn’t raised by lilo. she’s like her in so many ways, from her ‘take no shit’ outlook and her love of ocean life. she has no doubt their paths were meant to cross. *wing woman: any gender, any age. she is constantly trying to set them up on dates, point out anyone she thinks would be a good match for them. she means no harm, but she could be annoying with her meddling.

Picard 1.08: Broken Pieces

I'm so tired, y'all. My cat ate one of my hair elastics, because she's an idiot, and she was up all night puking extremely loudly all over the apartment. I have reached the age where I can't just bounce back from a sleepless night with a couple of Red Bulls and sheer force of will, so I'm kinda wrecked.

But I don't think I've ever been so wrecked that I couldn't ramble about Star Trek for a minute, so—shall we?

Spoilers:

We open on Aia, "The Grief World," possibly the most extra name for a planet in all of Star Trek canon.

This flashback is set 14 years ago, and Ramdha is present. But when we met her as one of the disordered Romulan xBs, they said she and her ship were assimilated 16 years ago. Either I'm misremembering or that's an obvious error. Which happens—I'm not mad, just confused.

Speaking of confusion: we see only female Romulans experiencing the Admonition (cool name btw), and Oh mentions a tradition passed down from their "foremothers." Are the Zhat Vash a female-only sect like the Qowat Milat? If so, what's Narek's deal? Or are only women Admonished, and male Zhat Vash agents just have to take their word for it?

None of this actually matters. I told you I was tired.

I really liked the scene with Narissa and Ramdha, mainly because I like Peyton List a lot and she got to show some complexity for a change, but Narissa remains an uncompelling villain to me. Even if she thinks she's working to save trillions of lives, she's indulging in an awful lot of sadism along the way; you get the impression she'd be torturing and murdering people even if she weren't an anti-android crusader.

They told us up front that Rios had a tragic backstory, but wowwwww. Two weeks in a row, this show gets us grieving for a character we've never met—impressive.

Prop watch! The phaser Raffi pulls on Soji looks more like a 21st-century firearm than any weapon we've ever seen on Star Trek, which added some possibly-unintentional heft to the scene. You just don't get the same visceral reaction seeing someone held at dustbuster-point.

The return of Admiral Fucking Bongwater! I worry Oh's going to get her before this is all over, though.

More infinitesimally tiny nitpicking: the JJ Abrams movies introduced the idea that phaser bolts on "stun" are blue, and ones on "kill" are red, and as far as I could tell, the first two seasons of Discovery used the same convention. (Which is a retcon I'm fine with: it makes fight scenes more visually understandable.) We've seen both red and blue phaser fire on Picard, and every confirmed phaser kill has been from a red shot. This episode, we see Seven shoot a bunch of Romulans with blue bolts, but later Narissa says they were killed by phasers. I don't know what to believe anymore!!!

I have literally never been more attracted to Jeri Ryan than in this episode. What a babe.

Every conversation about Data on this show ends up making me weepy. "He loved you" was the heavy hitter line, of course, but Picard saying that he felt as limited in his own emotional capacity as Data also had me reeling.

I totally called the engineering hologram being Scottish. Is it a terribly clever joke? No. Did I know they would be powerless to resist it anyway? Yes. Did I laugh my ass off when it finally came to pass? Absolutely I did.

Moving stars around the galaxy is pretty cool, but I read a novel once where some hyper-advanced aliens were moving stars back in time. Way cooler.

The physical comedy in the scene with Mr. Hospitality the close-talker and Raffi, who has a basic normal sense of personal space, was hilarious.

Rios is a sad boy who listens to sad songs on vinyl records and reads sad philosophy books. So basically he's every guy I knew in my 20's, zing!

Say what you will about the writing on this show, but the acting is almost uniformly phenomenal. I've heard more than one actor say that being on a show with Sir Patrick Stewart makes you instinctively up your acting game, and honestly, I think it shows all over the place, even when P. Stew's not in the actual scene.

All of that last point was basically to say Jeri Ryan is also acting her ass off this episode. I always thought she was a great actor, all the way from her debut on Voyager, but she is taking it to another level here and I cannot look away.

Can't decide who's showing off more in the scene with all the holograms: Santiago Cabrera or director Maja Vrvilo. Standing ovation to them both.

Raffi calls Rios's record player a "Walkman," which is adorable.

I will literally bet money that, had we seen Beautiful Flower (RIP), he would have been played by a relatively makeup-free Brent Spiner. Furthermore, I predict we're going to see another android from that line (i.e. Spiner returning sans the Data makeup) before the end of the season. And if it doesn’t happen and I remember to, I will call myself out.

Agnes is like "I promise I won't kill you," and Soji's just "Like you fucking could."

There was a cute moment on the Ready Room this week when Wil Wheaton mentioned seeing an early cut of this episode without most of the VFX, and Jeri Ryan's immediate reaction was "Oh, so I looked like a total idiot!"

All those Borg being vented into space was rugged as fuck. This show has gone to some lengths to establish individual Borg drones as not only victims, but victims who can potentially be saved. On TNG and Voyager, you cheered when a Borg cube blew up. On this show, when thousands of drones are unceremoniously killed, it feels like the massacre it is.

Everyone who's been whining about the nasty, nasty language on this show is going to have a fucking field day with this episode.

Speaking of f-bombs, I get the feeling Picard should have called Clancy back with the news that her head of security is a Romulan agent. Seems like information she should have, um, ASAP?

When Soji took over La Sirena with zero difficulty I burst out laughing. Like father, like daughter!

I am extremely interested to see what happens next with this Borg cube.

Picard's speech to Rios feels like the thesis of this whole show. I like it.

And fuckin' Narek is still around. Ugh.

Residents Confront Phoenix Officials Over Police Shootings

Some 2,600 people packed a Phoenix church Tuesday night for a community meeting after a young couple’s violent encounter with Phoenix police made international news, reports Phoenix New Times. Tensions ran high at the meeting where several people whose loved ones had been shot and killed by police officers addressed Police Chief Jeri Williams and Mayor Kate Gallego. Many decried the department’s lack of transparency surrounding the deaths of their sons and brothers. When Williams took the microphone, she was quickly drowned out by boos and infuriated yells from the crowd. Gallego was also met with boos when she spoke at the end of the three-hour meeting.

“This is a very difficult conversation, and it will continue. We are going to come back in 30 days with recommendations. We have listened to you,” Gallego promised. Dravon Ames, 22, his pregnant fiancée, Iesha Harper, and their two young children were accosted by police last month after their daughter walked out of a dollar store with a doll. Video of the encounter, filmed by local residents, has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times worldwide and has brought renewed scrutiny to a department reeling from the revelation that 97 officers shared racist posts on social media. “The police department is a part of the community. I am listening to what you say …” Emotions ran high as community members vented frustrations with a police department responsible for a record-high number of police shootings.

Frankie Muniz’s cat turned on the faucet, flooded house: ‘Everything I own, destroyed’

I have had cats who loved drinking from the faucet, even though I had one of those fancy cat water fountains that had constantly circulating water. I’ve never had a cat who knew how to turn on the faucet, but that may be because of the design of my faucets. Frankie Muniz’s cat figured out how to turn on the faucet, and the cat did it when he was overseas at a funeral. When he got home his house was flooded in three feet of water. He posted really heartfelt messages to Twitter about it, saying he lost everything from the flooding. He had to stay in a hotel due to the damage to his home but then the hotel was evacuated due to the terrible fires in California. Here are his tweets, in order from oldest to newest.

I arrived home from my uncle’s funeral to find 4 of my 5 story brownstone home under 3 feet of water. Everything I own, destroyed. Every wall, piece of artwork, personal photos, furniture… All because my cat accidentally turned on a sink a few days ago while we were gone. – Nov 15

I’m devastated and exhausted from a tough week with the loss of my Uncle Skip, 45 hours of travel to and from France to walk in to find this disaster. I’ve cried more yesterday and today then my whole life combined. Forgive me for venting.. I just need some support. – Nov 15

Just woke up to fire alarms and had to evacuate the hotel we are staying in because of what happened to our house. This has been an eventful week. - Nov 17

I hope he’s ok, and I’m also thinking of all the people who lost their homes to the fires in California. I can’t imagine what that’s like. What do you do about a cat who knows how to turn on a faucet? Also, how is he sure the cat did it? Was anyone else in his home and does he have video surveillance? He’s going to have to replace everything anyway so he shouldn’t buy that type of faucet ever again. He presumably has the money to replace his home, but you can’t replace sentimental items and it all sounds devastating.

Also I don’t follow Dancing With the Stars and didn’t realize Frankie finished third last year and that he’s currently a co-host on Dancing with the Stars: Juniors. He also does steady acting work.

After I wrote all this, I saw that Frankie proposed to his girlfriend, Paige, on Sunday. They got engaged at the Lantern Festival in Casa Grande, Arizona. Paige posted to Instagram with the news.
