so I am working - dragging my feet - through natla (1 episode left) and I thought I would share some of my thoughts and commentary:
Iroh: You must use your tact, your empathy-
Season 1 Zuko: [looks back at him]
*
Canon s1 ep3 Zuko: You... are working with Zhao. Willingly.
Show s1 ep3 Zuko: Yes? What's the problem? He is annoying but that's mostly it.
Canon!Zuko: UNCLE! DID YOU PUT SPIRIT MUSHROOMS IN MY TEA AGAIN?! I'M HAVING LUCID NIGHTMARES!!
Other random thoughts:
[Suki proceeds to defy gravity with her fan to impress Sokka]
Me, exasperation incarnate: Suki, I didn't know you were an airbender!
and
[Previous incarnation avatar bashing sesh]
Me: [...] But I love Zuko-Iroh interactions
[The one scene. Zuko is shouting how they can't just ask around. Iroh is offering advice until he gets distracted by street food.]
Me: The fact Zuko stood there for a few seconds trying to figure what this proverb means before he realizes its very much not a proverb - cackling
Second-hand long-suffering friend, who is at the end of her wits after hearing me talk about the butchering of Kyoshi's character for 20 minutes: XDDDD He legit thought rice had sth to do with it XD
there is more but it's more of
Oh no, he is hot.
And oh no he is also hot
Why is every extremist hot?!
Bumi is very bitter. Very.... Jaded.
Aang has no situational awareness: He did not just ask Zhao (Zuko too) to let him go so he can go save other enemies of the Fire Nation. He didn't.
Also. Why the firebender this, firebender that. Are the Fire Nation non-benders saints or something??
Mai casually says Ozai sucks for not thinking Azula is perfect <- Me: I mean she is absolutely right but she would not say that.
Azula's whole. Thing. I felt the narrative was trying very desperately to make her seem competent and clever but the fact that Iroh's thoughts insinuated the frontal attack on the Northern Water Tribe was her idea left me in stitches
But yeah. They nerfed Azula
Zuko - feral, bloodthirsty, a loser. <- Me: Oh my god they captured his essence! Minus the honor thing!
ZUKO NOT SAYING HONOR
THE TRAVESTY OF SOKKA NOT WEARING A DRESS
I WANT SOKKA IN KYOSHI WARRIOR UNIFORM
Katara not having any emotions ::: Aang walks all over her saying he can't support her in her fight against the patriarchy that is actually just Pakku and Yugoda or whatever was happening in the 7th episode: Katara doesn't blow up at him. Sokka calling her a little girl and never actually apologizing about the whole Jet accusation especially when he did the same with the Mechanist. : Katara doesn't blow up at him
Me: sounds fake but okay
At this point when Toph comes along Katara will let her not be a part of the Team (no Gaang just Team Avatar) and not contribute and not bond and NO FOUND FAMILY TROPE
Aang teaching Katara waterbending, Aang not goofing off, No Kataraang (not even a smidge) - something in me shriveled up and died.
Why is Azula soft??????
And why is Ty Lee assertive and forthcoming??? Just?? Why????
And finally, my second favorite:
Azula, trying very hard not to mention Zuko's ludicrous tenacity: Commander Zhao is a great asset... Maybe he needs better resources to showcase his true potential.
Zhao who barely passed his exams according to Jee the gossip queen: Yes, I do need the best resources. Give me all the 'sources.

i present my stupidly long reactions/opinions post to all of natla. i wrote it all as i watched, and i got more and more words in my head as i went, so it gets long. no i will not be editing this. i am not a review blog, i just have opinions ajhgsfjkf
ep 1 good: -gyatso. i love him so much -overall this was a good enough intro, but not much really stood out to me as good?? it's. kind of a weak intro asjdhgsfh
bad: -fire nation helmets trying to look a little less dopey by adding angles to the eye sockets is stupid af. like i can understand why they might have thought the circle eyes looked dopey, but personally, it felt eery and othering to me, like there aren't people behind those masks. also it's closer to a skull motif than the weird angular half cirlce shape. -aang being able to basically superman fly?? and hover?? it looks really weird, and i also kinda breaks some potential future plots?? like, he can just. hover up into the air and fly away without his staff. and they seemed to have replaced aang's jumping with it. now he just starts hovering. -i dont like that katara doesn't bend aang out of the ice in rage. i dont really care about sokka dropping the blatant sexism, but i still think they should've been fighting about SOMETHING. even without the comparison of their jobs at home, they already had something to bicker about before losing the boat, they should've kept that up. katara's angry bending was such a good way to communicate her character as well as show viewers her raw power and that bending is effected by emotions, i really dont like that they dropped it. -there's a heavy lean into sokka's relationship with aang that's probaly a result of the writers knowing how much the fandom loves sokka lately, but also. it really feels like it's overshadowing katara's role in aang's new life. like, if i hadn't seen the original show, i would assume that the main relationship is aang and sokka from this episode.
overall a servicable intro i guess, but i was. boring. it was really boring asjhgsfh
ep 2 good: -zuko is an artist and they stole his fucking journal im screamin. this is so funny. he's so mad that he lost his fckin diary and aang is using it to figure out his next steps. im just. i love this -actually really liked that waterbending scroll as a gift from gran gran, it makes it a lot more personal and very smoothly sidesteps the original plot for the scroll, which you gotta admit is a lot of screentime that they dont have -sokka trying to impress and relate to suki and looking like a gotdamn fool while doing it. he's fucking smitten. i love this. AND SUKI STARING AT HIM WITH HIS SHIRT OFF LATER. yeah. yeah i like this better than the original episode actually -sokka's dialogue overall is amazing, mostly because he's funny. the funny dialogue is overall pretty good i my opinion. which leads into a bad point: most of the serious and heartfelt dialogue feels pretty unnatural. the actors are overall pretty inexperienced, but the script is doing them no favors
bad: -Lt. Jee has a topknot. how fukcing dare they -they just used "VIP" in a sentence. i dont like the acknowledgment of a latin alphabet. why do they have an acronym for an english phrase using the latin alphabet when we've seen no latin letters anywhere -aang meeting with kyoshi first was fun, but the weird filter they have over the spirit world (?)/the whole scene genuinely makes it hard to look at -NO UNAGI??????? NONE??? NOT A SINGLE GIANT EEL FISH???? -did momo just make a chimpanzee sound. im going. to lose it.
neutral: -zuko and iroh don't know zhao yet… that's fucking wack
a MUCH better episode than the first one, this actually got me excited for stuff
ep 3 good: -love this internal resistence. very cool aspect to explore that i think the main show was missing -CABBAGE MERCHANT -fire nation terrorists in omashu is kind of terrifying. i like it -ok the casting and costume design for the freedom fighters is actually spot on, i love it. also jet's weapon use is so faithful to the original, it's gorgeous -OOOOOOH, sokka's warrior vs engineer, hakoda vs machanist father figure is so good, i love this -THAT FUCKIN LADY WHO JUST STARTED SMACKING ZUKO. im fuckin choking -i did actually really like the fight scene between all the cloths and scaves and stuff, it was short but it was fun. honestly i love every zuko and aang in this episode, it's very good
bad: -did. did they say attitude control on the airship? …did they mean altitiude control…? is attitude a common problem with airships?? (maybe it is, idk shit about air travel terms. mybe attitiude means something else entirely. but i don't think so) -WHy. why are the fire nation spies wearing RED. wh
neutral: -putting teo and the mechanist ("sai" now) in omashu is a pretty decent way to combine plots, but im not sure if i like that it probably wont get aang's grief over his cultural home being changed and partially desstroyed. i always thought that was a super important to aang's character, but also the narrative does have other chances to lean into aang's cultural grief -putting JET in omashu. that's a choice. -Lt. Jee as an informant for zhao… that's wack
side note, this is the point where i really started to notice that the music is… boring. it's super boring. we go from what feels like basically background noise style western orchestral music which really isn't that notable to the credit role remaster, and it's jsut so jarring. have they not been using the og soundtrack?? i can remember hearing the fire nation motif, but like… not much else. might need to go back and listen. what's the point of remastering the soundtrack if you aren't gonna use it?
ep 4 good: -FLOPSY STATUES -im lovin zuko's infiltration thing, it's amusing to watch. but also, maybe a bad point, cuz he's not… very good at it. blue spirit who?? i suppose needinng to talk to people lowers his stealth exponentionally. there's a reason the blue spriit doesn't talk. im leaving this point here cuz im having fun, but it's still got problems -OOOOH they're using this as the iroh captured and zuko choosing to sasve him or find aang, that's clever. the whole "make a choice" thing from that guard was a bit on the nose though. -sokka and katara bonding and chatting about expectations is great. i really like them bonding a lot. HOWEVEER. there is a LOT of focus on sokka's burdens, we haven't once touched on what katara's been doing. this is. an unforseen consequence of removing sokka's (blatant) sexism, isn't it. they cant figure out how to give katara's role the same amount of value without someone to act like it isn't important.
bad: -the implication that sokka is scared of haunted tunnels. why would he be scared, this bitch does not believe in spirit nonsense. unless he does now. natla sokka is supersticious. -i really dont like the mad hatter's tea party vibe from bumi. like, bumi was always off his rocker, but this brand of kooky feels off. -while i like the conversation of soka not trusting katara, i really dont like the seeming personality reversal in the tunnel. it's minor, but it's just so weird to see sokka sasy stuff like "woo love leads the way" without mocking it, and katara beig the one who says that's stupid. -how did they manange to make zuko look older for his flashback. good lord. oh no. -bumi: "you vs me, to the death." im fucking. im so done. i hate this bumi i hate him. i understand him being upset that aang vanished, but he is so fucking mean in this. -ok i. do not like them giving the zhao v zuko agni kai ending to iroh. i really dont like that at all. we lose the point of zhao being a fuckin bastard, about zuko being the type to give mercy (which the show has already thrown out twice now from zuko almost blaasting fire in someone's face after they we on the ground and basically defeated. dont really like that change in character. they added all this awkwardness and these comments about what an honorable soldier shouldn't do, and yet they do this?? dumb), and having iroh defend him with ease. innstead it's replaced with "dont show mercy to earthbenders." ok. -the badgeermoles. sense feelings. and react to them. FEELINGS. im.
neutral: -THE SINGING NOMADS??? i thought this tunnel plto sounded like it could be similar to the cave of two lovers, but i really did not expect to see the singing nomads here. i do love them though -look, i dont care about shipping, but OOF. the poor kataang shippers. they're just throwing out all the kataang scenes but not building up an actual friendship in its place. i'm not a fan
bad episode. did not like this one. there were some goo parts, but overall it was just so disappointing compared to the original. on its own, i supposes it's a servicable episode, but so far, none of the others have really let me down this much in terms of expectations.
ep 5 good -ooooohh. i know this one is going to be controvertial, but i actually love the part where ozai corrects azula in the fact that zuko found the avatar, not zhao, and that he's displaying desireable traits in an heir that she seems to be lacking. like, i wish this came AFTER we had some blatant examples of ozai's favortism towards azula, but i do love the idea that ozai is driving their competition between each other. also that ozai is actually able to be proud of zuko IF he achieves those impossible goals he sets. but we still need more azula favoritism set up. -DID JUNE. FUCK ME, there was so much in two seconds hold on. the western whistle thing. june saying "your dad's kinda cute." she thinks iroh is cute, and she thinks iroh is zuko's dad. im. im fine. -WAN SHI TONG????? WHAT IS HE DOING HERE. my child. i did not expect to see my child in s1. overall, i'm relatively happy with him? wish his face was smaller or the resof him was bigger - he had a lot more poof to his head in the original, in imo a smaller face on the head would help make him look larger in solo shots. he looks pretty scrawny. also the voice is a bit too much old man for my tastes? but i'm picky about this bird. now im just super curious if there will be a library episode if s2 comes, and what that'll look like.
bad: -nothing has exemplified my problems with the changes in this show more than katara not throwing the acorn at aang's head. it's just. her attitude is gone, any whimsy that isn't sokka is gone, and they struggle to meld serious topics with humor. -actual gyatso in the spirit world?? maybe?? first of all, if it is actually gyatso, i dont think they did a good job of prooving that. second, why??? i'm really not a fan of aang actually getting that relief from grief and guilt. guilt is such a huge part of aang's character, i just.. idk, it feels less impactful when he gets actual gyatso telling him its ok instead of learning to manage his guilt on his own, nevere knowing really what gyatso would think og him now, like very other person who loses a loved one. it's just. it feels cheap
neutral -im not sure if i like koh as an actually malicious force in this story. like, it works fine for the narrative presented, but i really liked how koh was in the original, threatening and scary and trying to trick aang into making an expression for snack time, but not actually doing anything but helping aang when asked.
not the best episode, but not the worst. we just did that. it's kind of an in between, so idk if there's much to comment on. overall, im not a huge fan of the plot choices here, but i don't think they're actually bad choices, just not my style.
ep 6 good: -roku: im here to help you with anything you need aang: it has to do with koh roku: …anything but that roku has so much fuckin attitude, i kind of love it -zhao ignoring aang to correct the notetaker guys notes and make he gets his facts straight is both funny and an effective way to show off zhao's ego. also "what are you doing, dont write that down" is makin me think of that one kig who fell of his horse while hunting and said "dont let the historians write about this" and guess what fucking happened -the convo right after was really good imo. aang basically doing a lil test to prove that he and zuko could be friends with their boring old conversation was great. zuko getting mad about compassion is heartbreaking, woohoo. pretty much all around a fun scene, except that last line from aang was a little too on the nose. but at this point, im used to it in this show. -also the journal thing is still great. and i could be totally wrong, but i feel like zuko being super kowledgable about avatar stuff is a fanon thing?? well supported, but i'm pretty sure it doesn't actually come up often how much zuko knows about the past avatars, and fandom kind of took the idea that he MUST know a bunch given his search, and has freuently applied that to aus that turn zuko into this avatar specialist that actuallyhas a lot of info that aang needs. i swear that's a fanon concept, and i kind of love that it's happening here. -Ooohh. omg. the 41st as zuko's crew is DEFINITELY something i've only seen in fanon. the crew NOT KNOWING they were the 41st is completely new, and i honestly adore it.
bad: -not the fuckin mother of faces statue spinning around in his hand like a fuckin loading screen object -zhao yelling "cel - la - brate" like a fuckin party rock song, im. i cant. -blue spirit mask looks plastic. also why'd they make it angrier. i mean, i gujess it doesn't matter, but i dont think it adds anything either. that's a design you shouldn't touch in my opinion, it's too iconic. -the fucking music. the music is so fucking boring. you can't give me one fucking blue spirit motif?? wh. please. i need it -why. why did it take so long to do the whole "i need the avatar alive" and then swords to aang's throat. like. i could deal with that short moment of realization leadinng to a pause, but the actual action of zuko putting his swords to aang's throat feels like it takes forever. the whole shock from the animation was how fuckin immediate zuko's reaction was, how there seemed to be no hesitation from allies with the avatar to betting his life on escape. dont care if they have to speed up the footage, that whole sequence shouldn't have given us time to think. it was too slow from the second zhao told his soldiers to stop. -the agni kai. hm… ok. there's a lot here. at its most basic, i absolutely hate that zuko fought back here, because it feels so incredibly counter to the message of the animated show. like, there's a lot of fuckin weight to zuko's line of "i won't fight you." basically any fanfic can tell you a bunch of different ways this is important. it struck a chord for a reason. zuko fighting back just feels wrong. that said, i don't think it's a god awful scene. it's disappointing and abandons half of the origial meaning, but on its own in the context of the show as we've seen it, it works. we still get the trauma, zuko learns the idea that compassion is weakness, and it's still horrifying in the end. but compared to the original, it does feel like the writers here missed the point of zuko refusing to fight in the original, and that's the most frustrating part.
neutral: -torn on how i feel about zhao tagging along with zuko instead of them being phsycially separate. like, i guess it works, but zhao feels more slimey and less powerful this way. like, i'm not constantly reminded that zhao has more influence and more resources through this partnership. but then again, this episode also kind of solves that issue? i guess it doesn't matter, i just didn't like it. -zuko is a very vocal fighter, and he also makes a good amount of noise during his blue spirit fighting. i guess it doesn't really matter, especially cuz we dont have dante basco's crazy recognizable voice to deal with, but it still feels a bit disappointing for the blue spirit to make noise when we're used to dead silence
i might be going crazy, but i swear i heard some of the original guard grunts from the show when zuko's beating up the guards in front of his cell. i might be crazy, but fuck. ANYWAY. overall i did like this episode. going off the last episode, it still had a lot of plot bits i didn't care for, but overall it's good. yes there are issues, but im honestly more impressed by the things they introduced than i am annoyed with the things they changed. im still thinking about the 41st, like fuck
ep 7
good: -zuko's "ship" blew up!! that's an intersting change, but i think it's a clever one! though i do wonder what will become of zuko's actual ship considering it's fine. my favorite character, alive and well. have fun drowning, zuko. but also, this seems much more brutal to me?? cuz like. jee and iroh were trying to save zuko, and they ended up putting himself in danger in doing so. that's worse than just not being around when danger happened like in the animation, imo. -YUE HAS A FURSONA????????????? -i do love that whole scene of azula putting her foot down and refusing to do more of ozai's dumb little tests of strength. like, maybe not true to her animation arc, but i do like it -honestly the change where katara "wins" the fight with pakku not cuz pakku has a crush on her grandma but because everyone else who watched her figt thought she was badass was really nice. crowd vote says fuck pakku
bad: -OOF THAT FIRST SHOUT OF THE NORTHERN WATER TRIBE. oh that is not good. i haven't mentioned the cgi yet, but this is. oh dear. technically it's eas to miss, but still. -im so sorry, im sure she's lovely, but the first short of yue is so bad, she looks like she does not want to be here at all. i actually startedlaughing out loud wtf -oh i forgot momo existed. but now thtat he's here, he's ugly. i dont like him. -sokka and katara look so fucking pale next to hahn and arnook. i hate it
neutral: -im still neutral about azula and ozai's whole tough love thing. azula's lack of confdence and anger at not feeling good enough really feels like a zuko thing instead of an azula thing. she really doesn't come across in the original as worried at all about how she holds up next to zuko. in a vacuum, i don't think it's a bad choice, but compared to the original it is a jarring shift
overall pretty good. i dont like aang's protective behavior, but i do like that it's showing off some of aang's more negative qualities. we didn't get a bato episode or a intro to the storm episode here, so we haven't really encountered that yet. also im happy katara got to be sort of mad. a little.
ep 8 good: -i do like the early war balloons i think, it feels more reasonable that zhao snuck into the city vs got all the way back to the spirit oasis on komodo rhinnos withou being stopped or followed like they did in the original. -katara mastering waterbending literally without instruction is kind of badass. that whole exchange of "you've found a master haven't you" "yes, it's me" was pretty fun. idk how realistic it is, but like. in the original, she also masteredd waterbending in a matter of days, so. niether are that realistic -i kind of like how fuckin visceral the moon spirit getting stabbed is. like, minor change, doesn't matter, but still. that one shot of the bloody bag with a knife sticking out of it was lovely -ok that's spooky as fuck, the "there is no aang" thing with koizilla. like, the idea that this isn't just aang being possessed or lending his aide, this is him straight up giving up his life to la in that moment -that whole thing about zuko just beig a tool ozai uses to motivate azula was really well done actually. great acting, basically all that fanfic worthy revelation emotion, it was super good. like i was kinda thrown by ozai giving all control around hunter the avatar to zhao after seeming so impressed that zuko found the avatar in the first place, but really, i been played a fool. he doesn't care, he's manipulating azula. this is what the favoritism looks like. yikes. -also obsessed with the visual they talked about with aang/la wandering the world forever in search of a partner they wont find. this new context that koizilla really wasn't just a fuck you to the fire nation, it was meant to be permanent. like, fuck, i love that
bad: -OH THEY GOT RID OF ZHAO GOING TO THE SPIRIT LIBRARY i hate everything. what's the point. they're just gonna nix the library all together. wan shi tong is never coming back. sokka v wan shi tong will never happen. my entire career is over. -kuruk just appearing in a random doorway is wack -koizilla looks bad. baaaaaaaaaaad. where's the glowly lines -ok great yay we got zuko turning his back on zhao and getting attacked, but first of all that meant nothing cuz zuko DID ttry to kill him, zhao just dodge, and second, la should've taken zhao. i just. it's a more satisfying death for him, and also zuko's whole take my hand thing is super fuckin important too. but zuko in this show as a traumatic aversion to compassion, so whatever i guess.
pretty good finale, entertaining and got some good emotion stuff. better than most of the episode's emotions honestly
overall good: -before i speak i need you to look at my icon. scroll down the blog a bit. just take that in. ok? ok. i think zuko kind of carried the story here. overall i was very impressed by his acting, and yes, it was much more awkward and tear-ready than animated zuko, but also that's my fuckin jam. he's out of character in a lot of ways, but all the characters are, and like. lets be fucking real, this is fanon zuko. this is how the majority of fandom characterizes him. -set design was very nice in my opnion. casting choices (minus the water tribe sibs) were amaing visually, maybe no so much in terms of talent but we deal. while the costumes look too new and fee fake, it's not the worst. if you go into this expecting camp and trashy fun, you'll enjoy it. you can't set your standards high -once again, take a scroll through my blog. ok. i love how often aang is just like. clearly dissappointed with zuko's lack of desire to change, how much he wants to connect to zuko but zuko wont stop fuckin hissing and spitting. if aang got to have personality in this script, he'd basically be pointing at zuko like "that's my emotional support enemy," i swear to fuck. i might be pushing it on how much they were really like this in the narrative, but i dont care, im having fun asgjhdfh
bad: -momo and appa both look creepy. they give me realistic pokeon vibes, and not in the detective pikachu type of way. like, detective pikachu is what i was hoping for, something that preserved the cute and still felt semi real. this didn't do that. momo is weirdly top heavy and his eyes scare me, and appa has weird, ever present droopy lips, especially at the corners. it's just uncanny -i dont like how bending looks. it's okay i guess, but it's got so many extra busy particle effects that it feels uncontrolled. i always pictured masterful bending as being really smooth and pretty unnatural looking- smooth water bubbles, fire with weirdly contained flickers and not much smoke, earth without a bunch of crumbling pebblees, air without dust everywhere you dont want it. the wobbly water and earth bending with so many fuckin shards of debris and the firebening with so many sparks is disappointing cuz i would've worldbuilt that to be a lack of mastery thing. anyway. it's fine. -aang is not happy and excitable, and katara isn't angry or sassy. they have the personalities of cardboard boxes. rip.
i actually liked that a lot. lots of good and lots of bad, but overall i had fun and that's what matters. maybe not something i'd rewatch if i didn't have atla brainrot, but not fuckin god awful. the characters were pretty different from their animated counterparts, and that's very frustrating in its own way, and the script was full of poorly written dialogue, and the acting kinda of sucked in a lot of places, but. but. i had fun, and im probably gonna rewatch it, and im gonna enjoy applying these ideas to fanfic and fanart. overall, im glad it exists. it's not going to replace the original, it's not meant to, but it's just trashy fun. i love trashy fun.

Avatar Live Action - yeaaa no
Phew, so I had nothing better to do this weekend than watch the LA and compare it to the cartoon series. The first 2 episodes were fine I have to admit and got my hopes up. Then it got stupid.
WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD
The good stuff:
The world looks beautiful and honestly I loved all the places and the scenes, so many details everywhere.
The costumes, I really can´t complain about them, because I don´t care if they´re not dirty enough or what else. You can see the details and structures on every different type of clothes, even a simple Kimono has details and I love it. The Kyoshi warriors looked beautiful. (And seriously stop comparing the costumes to cosplays as if that is insult. Maybe if they looked like bought costumes than I would agree, but we´re talking about handmade costumes here!)
Iroh & Zuko relationship is good, love that.
Surprisingly Sokka is not that big of a problem for me with his lacking sexism.
I liked Zhao, at least how he was potrayed.
Jet is good, they got the important point about him across I think.
They showed Katara diligently practicing water bending even in the back ground, which I really appreciated.
The bad stuff:
The humor is seriously lacking and I miss that. The only funny ones are sometimes Iroh and Zuko
Aang gets told multiple times how he should not have any friends and rather be alone, which I find stupid. Hence why most of the time he´s portrayed as a sad boy, and I really really miss his playful side in this.
Sokka is way too serious though. And they robbed us of him in a Kyoshi warrior outfit T_____T
Katara lacks serious rage. She´s... too mild? I don´t know exactly how to describe it but I never really felt much?
they ASSASSINETED Azula´s character! I cannot comprehend how they made her a whiny child who has to prove anything to her father which is way too similar to Zuko! Azula certainly is NOT LOOSING CONTROL over her emotions like that. She´s perfect, she´s the golden child, why does she get played like that? What the hell?? With every new scene I saw it got worse. Yea she is manipulative, you got that right, but everything else about her that makes her terrifying was thrown out of the window because of what??
Omashu and the way too many plots in one.
The mechanic and his son Teo are suddenly there and their reasons for all what they´re doing is infuriating me to no end, because it´s so stupid.
The tunnel is stupid stupid stupid and I hate it. If that is how they wanted to avoid the AangxKatara romance but still wanted to plant their LOVE message in there, then they can keep it. Not that I´m against sibling´s love, but I am against the idea that a wild animal will simply forgive you for trespassing if you hold on tight enough on your beloved sibling >_> And it was useless! The whole tunnel search to get to the prisons was useless! The beautiful glowing stones that ARE THE GUIDES are useless!
Bumi IS NOT BITTER! Why did you do this to him? No wait, I know why you can do this to him, but it still makes me angry, because Aang is already weighed down enough and not even his one old friend can just be happy about him being alive and well.
Aang does not once water bend! Wasn´t the first season about learning at least water bending?
They managed to cram so much into Omashu, but they couldn´t be bothered to add the rivalry between Sokka and Yue´s fiance? Why? Honestly, of all the things they let drop it was the engagement part?
The precise timing of the one day in the year where both gods are mortal so Zhao could kill one of them. Too many mental gymnastics and luck of timing for that kind of plan, seriously.
Result:
I can enjoy it for the pictures and the costumes, but characters and plot are giving me grief.

Note
hi! i really like your posts and recently i came across some anti kataang arguments and i would like to see your opinion on that (if you want to answer because you must be very tired of answering those lol)
“i remember perfectly aang forcing himself into katara. not only once, but a lot of times. in that talk they were having during the play it was one of the moments aang was intrusive”
“i saw people saying that katara was jealous of aang with that kids in kyoshi island, which she obviously was not. she was annoyed at them”
“kataang had no development. it feels like a ship made out of nowhere”
“aang is completely obsessed with the idea of katara being his. proof is that episode were the guru tells him he has to let go of her and he choses to break the connection. it’s like: look what i did for you, you should stay with me. aang learning to let go would have been a evolution for his character”
“making them stay together in the end just because aang is the protagonist and has to stay with the girl is boring and adds nothing to the plot”
“he spend years after a girl that never felt the same for him”
hi anon! im very flattered you like my posts 🥰💛 and you’re not wrong that sometimes it gets a lil tiring addressing anti kataang arguments, but that’s because 90% of them are the same foolish rhetoric dressed up in a different costume, lol. i finally have some free time, so i’ll take a stab at these for you!
“i remember perfectly aang forcing himself into katara. not only once, but a lot of times. in that talk they were having during the play it was one of the moments aang was intrusive”
not gonna lie, this particular “argument” made me crack up laughing because they “remember perfectly… lots of times” but can only name one instance 😂 like i am on the floor, because trying to get away with that in a formal essay would earn them nothing more than a goose egg. you need evidence to support a claim, which this “claim” has none of. i mean,, when does aang force himself onto katara?? when katara initiates every cheek kiss they share?? when they are mutual participants in several shared hugs?? don’t get me started on DOBS - the Now or Never Kiss that falls under literally requires reciprocation from both parties, lol. but regarding the ever-so-infamous EIP episode they bring up:
This post talks specifically about EIP and the play’s portrayal of Aang and Katara (and how it cannot be used to define their relationship). This post explains the true source of Katara’s conflict in turning down Aang (i.e. the war itself and the risks the war presents for both of them) and why the EIP kiss did not “ruin” Kataang’s relationship. This post explains how the EIP kiss was resolved through narrative parallels. This post explains how the EIP kiss is so often blown out of proportion. This post explains how Aang did not “threaten” Katara in EIP (with some excellent commentary in the notes, too).
the fact of the matter is that yes, aang overstepped a boundary with katara there. no one has ever contested that because to do so would be to disregard canon, and here’s the thing about kataang shippers: we love atla canon. it gave us everything we wanted and more. (imo, that’s what anti kataangers don’t understand.) the EIP episode can be interpreted as a “low point” for many reasons, but the primary “takeaway” is that the play performed was imperialist propaganda that preyed on the gaang’s insecurities and demeaned them (much to the pleasure of the Fire Nation audience), which had negative consequences, one of which was aang kissing katara largely out of desperation. no one has ever excused that! thus, what i think isn’t clicking with anti kataangers is that aang and katara’s miscommunication in EIP is not a representation of their relationship being doomed to fail. aang made a mistake and immediately backed off without question or hesitation. katara has time to make her own decision and chooses to forgive him. doesn’t it strip more of katara’s agency away to conclude that katara could never ever ever forgive her best friend for a single mistake that - comparatively - could have been a whole lot worse?
(im just saying.)
“i saw people saying that katara was jealous of aang with that kids in kyoshi island, which she obviously was not. she was annoyed at them”
honestly, i have a question for whoever came up with this jfksjdasks. okay, yes, she was annoyed. that’s a given based on her exasperated eye rolls and sighs. but why was katara annoyed with them, hmm?
here’s my thing about katara’s feelings in this ep: jealousy and annoyance are not inherently the same, it’s true. a person can be annoyed without being jealous (obviously). as such, there are essentially two possible interpretations that have validity, although one in my opinion has greater weight in canon:
1. yes, it is possible to interpret katara’s annoyance that episode as being solely related to their delays on kyoshi island. one can reasonably argue that katara’s romantic feelings for aang were not as strong so early in the series (it’s only episode 4, after all, although lbr - she was Looking at aang’s tattoos in episode 1 lmao), and therefore the primary reason she was annoyed at the fangirls is because they were one of the causes extending their stay on the island when katara felt they needed to leave. it’s a fair interpretation.
2. a different and stronger interpretation, in my opinion, is that katara’s irritation was a product of both annoyance at their extended stay and jealousy of the fangirls’ obsession with aang. because here’s the thing about jealousy: it doesn’t have to be some extreme, exaggerated emotion/reaction! when katara gets jealous of on ji in book 3, she makes a single comment about aang and on ji dancing together. when aang gets jealous of jet in book 2 (because of sokka’s teasing), he, too, makes a single comment (i.e. that it would be a bad idea for katara to kiss jet). i bring these two moments up because they explicitly demonstrate within atla canon that reactions of jealousy do not have to be dramatique and outrageous, à la zuko throwing ruon-jian across the room in book 3, lmao. jealousy can be simple! kept to oneself! as such, katara’s disgruntled manner in that episode - which, might i add, is largely if not only shown in reaction to aang with the fangirls - can certainly be interpreted as a quieter form of jealousy akin to several other moments within canon.
more than that, however, if the writers did not at all want jealousy to be an interpretation on the table… why on earth would they have bothered to mention jealousy as a possibility? here’s the relevant excerpt from the episode transcript:
Koko: [Stomps her foot in annoyance and puts her hands on her hips, while another girl happily waves at Aang; irritated.] What’s taking you so long, Aangy?
Cut back to Aang and Katara; the former enthusiastically waves back at his awaiting fangirls, while the latter raises an eyebrow at the scene.
Katara: [Slightly mocking.] Aangy…
Aang: [Enthusiastically.] Just a second, Koko!
Katara: [Sarcastic.] “Simple monk,” huh? [Annoyed.] I thought you promised me that this Avatar stuff wouldn’t go to your head.
Aang: It didn’t. You know what I think? You just don’t want to come because you’re jealous.
Katara: [Close-up; angrily.] Jealous? [More high pitched voice.] Of what?
Cut to a broader shot. Aang moves back slightly, when an irritated Katara resumes to ferociously stuff the basket with more fruits.
Aang: Jealous that we’re having so much fun without you.
Katara: [Irritated.] That’s ridiculous.
(sidebar, but can i just say that seeing “ferociously stuff” to describe putting fruits away is arguably the funniest thing i’ve ever read sjkdhsjalks)
to me, this excerpt alone all but proves katara’s irritation is a mixture of annoyance at the girls’ (and aang’s) behavior/their delayed departure and jealousy regarding how the fangirls’ fawn over aang. katara clearly demonstrates frustration at aang’s seeming lack of concern for their time crunch and how he’s letting his status get to his head (and remember, y’all: this is very early book 1 aang, he’s barely begun to truly reconcile what it means to be the avatar and the last airbender, which is understandable and a-okay! can’t have growth if he doesn’t start somewhere!). that checks out. but next thing you know, katara’s reaction proceeds to dramatically heighten when aang teases the idea of jealousy to her. again: why include this moment if jealousy was never on the table whatsoever as an interpretation for her feelings of irritation? why make katara’s response intensify so strongly if she’s not jealous even a little bit?
in sum, while i don’t think katara’s aggravation is solely fueled by jealousy, the episode itself points to jealousy as at least a part of it. simple!
“kataang had no development. it feels like a ship made out of nowhere”
this take screams willful ignorance, like did they even watch the whole show?? it’s not worth addressing over and over, ngl.
This post and this post explain how Katara’s feelings for Aang develop throughout the series. This post explains how Aang consistently supported Katara throughout the series. This post demonstrates how Kataang is literally ingrained in every episode.
“aang is completely obsessed with the idea of katara being his. proof is that episode were [sic] the guru tells him he has to let go of her and he choses [sic] to break the connection. it’s like: look what i did for you, you should stay with me. aang learning to let go would have been a evolution for his character”
“completely obsessed” h e l p i weep for the lack of brain cells 😭 it is so hard to just say “kataang isn’t my cup of tea” and go?? seriously?? i thought we were past making stuff up to support shipping agendas. lord help us. real quick:
This post explains how Aang never acted like he was “entitled” to Katara’s affections. This post explains how Katara and Aang do not “idolize” each other. This post and this post talk about Aang’s chakra being blocked and unblocked, and how it had to do with fear, not attachment. This post talks about Aang and the Avatar State, explicitly discussing “The Crossroads of Destiny” and the notion of attachment/letting Katara go.
okay, let’s take this claim one sentence at a time:
“the guru tells him [aang] he has to let go of her [katara] and he choses [sic] to break the connection.”
first of all. FIRST OF ALL. can you imagine the hellfire that would have rained down if aang hadn’t chosen to go rescue katara? here is a piece of the episode transcript:
… Right before he is able to completely open the final chakra and master the Avatar State, however, he hears a shriek from Katara and sees a vision of her in chains. At this, he jumps out of the energy sphere and runs away from the Avatar Spirit. The energy bridge that leads him there slowly vanishes behind him until it catches up and falls from underneath him, causing his image to plummet toward Earth. This cuts his connection to the Avatar State, which forces him back to reality.
Aang: Katara’s in danger! I have to go! [Prepares to exit.]
Pathik: No, Aang! By choosing attachment, you have locked the chakra! If you leave now, you won’t be able to go into the Avatar State at all!
Aang hesitates but leaves anyway, leaving Pathik concerned and disappointed.
aang chose to leave because katara was in danger. if he had chosen to stay,, dear god. the vitriol that would have been thrown around. “aang doesn’t really love katara! he chose not to save her!” “aang is so selfish and greedy! he chose power over love!” it’s literally a catch-22. damned if he does leave, damned if he doesn’t leave. #fandomlogic
anyways, yes, sure, aang chose to leave, which at the time broke the connection. he was indeed in avatar state limbo for a Hot Minute. whoop de do.
“it’s like: look what i did for you, you should stay with me.”
logical fallacy: ad hominem, hasty generalization, ∴ not worth our time 💛
“aang learning to let go would have been a [sic] evolution for his character”
i have amazing news for those who perpetuate this take. aang did let her go! he would not have been able to enter the avatar state in COD if he hadn’t! point blank, it is utterly untrue to pretend aang did not “let go” of his attachment to katara. now, im not going to get into the concept of “attachment” here and what it truly meant for aang to have “let katara go” in the book 2 finale (if it was good, bad, etc. etc.). there is a lot of material to work with there that would require like,, an entire post to dig into, if not more. the fact of the matter is that aang did let katara go, and the proof is that he successfully entered the avatar state before azula killed him. the above claim thus sits in complete contradiction to canon and is a moot point.
“making them stay together in the end just because aang is the protagonist and has to stay with the girl is boring and adds nothing to the plot”
“making them stay together” again, is it so hard for someone to just say “kataang isn’t my thing, im gonna stick to fanon pairings, but y’all have fun” i mean that really, really does not seem so difficult to me! also, “making” is a hilarious word to use just because,, atla is a work of fiction. in that respect, the writers “made” everything happen. you cannot escape their sphere of control.
anyways. that’s just funny to me lmao
but no, aang and katara did not get together in a romantic fashion just because aang was the lead male protagonist and katara was the lead female protagonist. i refer back to these posts from earlier:
This post and this post explain how Katara’s feelings for Aang develop throughout the series. This post explains how Aang consistently supported Katara throughout the series. This post demonstrates how Kataang is literally ingrained in every episode.
aang and katara got together because their relationship had been developed since episode 1, duh. reducing their relationship to “lead guy + lead girl” completely disregards the legwork done and the foundation laid for their romantic partnership. like, all someone has to do is rewatch the show 😂 and i hate to break it to whoever created that take, but to say kataang “adds nothing to the plot” again ignores how their relationship is one of the two most important in the show (the other being aang and zuko’s relationship as narrative foils). it is not a cheap coincidence that kataang embodies multiple complementary themes/motifs of atla: push and pull, yin and yang, air and water, oma and shu, etc. etc. their relationship adds emotional depth! how is that not relevant to the plot! atla is a show where just about every relationship is important in some regard (this post touches upon how aang alone transforms all of his friends - think of the bigger picture, then, and how every other dynamic weaves in a crucial thread to create the beautiful tapestry we call atla!).
my point is that kataang is relevant to the plot the way every relationship in atla is, whether or not someone ships/enjoys them. you cannot have a good show without having intimate relationships (emotionally, i mean). can you imagine if someone said zuko and iroh’s relationship wasn’t relevant to the plot?? there is a reason it is such a powerful moment when iroh and zuko reunite in the finale. similarly, there is a reason yue’s sacrifice and sokka’s consequential (and lasting) grief is so poignant. there is a reason it is so heartbreaking when katara and sokka have to leave behind their father at the beginning of tsr. to tie back to kataang, there is a reason it is so hard to watch katara dismiss aang in that same episode. there is a reason so many people are moved when katara pulls aang out of the avatar state when appa is stolen. there is a reason emotional reactions are incited during atla and it is because these relationships are so important!! i don’t care if someone thinks kataang is “boring” - that’s their opinion, they have a right to it. but to insist their relationship wasn’t relevant to the plot? to the story? when in fact it was a key component from episode 1?
are you kidding me?
“he spend years after a girl that never felt the same for him”
“years” lol doesn’t atla take place over the course of a year at most? pretty sure this person didn’t even watch the show 😂 for a third time, i refer to these posts:
This post and this post explain how Katara’s feelings for Aang develop throughout the series. This post explains how Aang consistently supported Katara throughout the series. This post demonstrates how Kataang is literally ingrained in every episode.
i hope i addressed these (nonsensical) arguments to your satisfaction, anon! a lot of them are the same tried-and-failed anti kataang arguments, smh. not to incite new discourse lmao, but it’d be nice if there was at least some variety 😂 thank you again for your kind words, my friend! 💛

“SOKKA, WE HAVE TO LEAVE IN FIFTEEN MINUTES! NOW OPEN THE DOOR OR I WILL BREAK IT DOWN MYSELF!” You banged your fist against the door for what felt like the hundredth time, and it seemed to finally work. The door swung open and your brother came out holding his hands up placatingly. You had to give it to him, his hair looked good, but with all the time he had spent styling it in there you would be disappointed if it wasn’t a masterpiece.
“Calm down, Y/N! You just don’t appreciate the art that goes into this,” he said with an exaggerated gesture to himself. You rolled your eyes and pushed past him, closing and locking the door behind him to make sure that no one would disturb you while you got ready. One downside to rooming with all boys was that no one knew how to knock, so you had to be extremely vigilant in making sure that no one walked in on you.
You had spent a majority of your time picking out the perfect outfit for tonight after you and Zuko had gotten home. It was harder than you thought it was going to be to find something that said, ‘I’m available but not too available, I’m approachable but not too approachable, and also this is hot’, but after a lot of rifling through your closet you decided on a black backless top and navy blue jeans, something that looked good but did not warrant all the time spent searching.
It didn’t take nearly as long to do your hair and makeup, maybe because you were rapidly running out of time, but you decided to just go with a simple look that brought out your eye color and what you usually did for parties for your hair.
You nearly stabbed yourself in the eye with your mascara wand when you heard banging on the door. “Y/N, WE HAVE TO LEAVE IN FIVE MINUTES! NOW OPEN THE DOOR OR I WILL BREAK IT DOWN MYSELF!”
“Sokka, if you’re gonna yell at me then BE ORIGINAL!” You called back as you finished your eyes up. You shoved all the products back into your makeup bag then checked your hair one last time before leaving the bathroom.
“How do I look, boys?” You walked into the kitchen and grabbed your purse off the island, testing the waters with the heels you had decided to wear last minute. They were only a couple inches but it had been a while since you wore them, and you would prefer if you didn’t fall over in front of every hot person at this party.
Sokka followed you into the kitchen after nearly getting hit by the door, his tone somehow exasperated already. “You look fine. Now can we please get going? It’s one thing to be fashionably late, but we can’t be LATE late.”
“I love the heels, Y/N,” Aang gave you a grin and two thumbs up which you returned.
When you looked to Zuko for his reaction, you were surprised to see a faint blush dusting his cheeks and his eyes wider than usual as they lingered on you. “You look- um- wow. You look great. Are you sure you won’t get cold?”
You felt your face heat up and you smiled, subconsciously tucking a strand of hair behind your ear. “I guess I can just borrow your jacket if I need to,” you teased with a wink as you walked past him. “Come on Sokka, I’ll race you for shotgun!”
“Oh, that is so cheap—!” Before you knew it, the two of you were sprinting out the door, pushing each other
“Pick your jaw up off the floor, Zuko,” Aang said jokingly once you were out of the apartment, the distant yells of you and your brother bouncing through the hallway. “Y’know, you could probably make a move tonight. I think she’s into you!”
“I- that’s not- I wasn’t- we’re just friends!” Zuko stammered as he picked up his keys from the table, finally snapping out of his stupor.
“Whatever you say, Sifu Hotman!”
“I don’t— it’s not like that!”
~~~~~~
It was a quick ride over to the apartment with Sokka’s instructions — who had somehow beat you to the car winning shotgun (you blamed your heels) — and soon you were in front of Apartment B29 knocking on the door. A man about your age opened the door, and you blinked in surprise as you were hit by the wave of noise coming from inside. Sokka pushed past you and did a very complicated handshake with the guy before clapping him on the back.
“Kento, how are ya doin’? I brought my roommates with me, is that cool?”
“Of course, man! The more the merrier!” Sokka grinned and high-fived him and the four of you moved inside, all of your senses assaulted by a barrage of.. everything.
It was a surprisingly active party in a surprisingly big place, but you supposed that had to be the case for someone to throw something this size. Your eyes immediately started drifting around, searching for your friends that had arrived before you, and you started tugging on Aang’s shirt and pointing. “There they are! Come on!”
You practically dragged the poor boy behind you as your brother and Zuko followed behind in a less forced way, and you barreled into Suki, each knocking the air out of each other with the strength of your hugs.
“You’re here!” Suki looked at your outfit and whistled. “And you look fantastic? This is the Y/N that I have been missing!”
You laughed and pulled away from her, giving one armed hugs to both Katara and Toph before settling in while everyone else greeted each other. “Gotta make a good first impression on BSSU guys, right?”
“Oh, I think you already have,” Katara smirked, her eyes flicking over to Zuko for a second before training back on you.
You furrowed your brows, about to question Katara further, when Suki gasped and grabbed your hand.
“Oh, speaking of guys! There are a couple guys in my psych class tht are here that I think you’d really be into. Come on!” Suki started pulling you away and you looked back at the rest of the group with an amused expression before giving in and running away with her.
Katara groaned, looking at Toph with desperation that she couldn’t see. “That girl is hopeless. How am I supposed to do my matchmaking if she’s trying to set her up with random guys?”
“Guess you’ll either have to try harder or let it go, sugar queen.”
“You know I’m not letting this go.” Katara could’ve kept going on about it, but thankfully for Toph, Aang slung his arm around Katara’s shoulder and kissed her on the cheek.
“Come on, Katara! Let’s start this party off right.” The two of them grinned at each other and went off to the midst of everyone, no doubt to dance together.
“Zuko? You there?” Toph questioned.
“Yeah?” Parties were very much not Zuko’s thing, so he didn’t exactly know what he was going to do now that everyone had split up.
Toph elbowed him and started walking through the crowd, Zuko following hurriedly after her as he rubbed his shoulder. “What was that for?”
“It’s how I show affection.” Toph grabbed onto his hand so that she wouldn’t run into everything in her way, and continued walking. “Now come on, let’s do something! Sokka’s talking with his boys, Y/N is probably off hitting on some guys while Suki encourages her, and Katara and Aang are doing some dumb couple stuff. Which means that we have to do something.”
Zuko chuckled and shrugged. “Sure.” Hopefully Suki wasn’t serious about setting you up. Of course, he didn’t like you like that, but you were too good for the kind of guy that you would find at this kind of party. He supposed that he was that kind of guy because he was here, but he was different, right? You wouldn’t see him in that light—
“Ow! Why’d you do that again?” Zuko was sure he was going to have a bruise if he hung out with Toph for the rest of the night.
“Because I can tell that you’re thinking of something stupid.”
“I am not—
“Zuko, I can’t even see you and I know you’re lying.”
He was suddenly too distracted to focus on Toph calling him out because he saw you, talking animatedly with a couple of guys and Suki by your side. They all started laughing at whatever you said, and your smile, even from that far away, made his heart flutter. But for some reason, seeing you with those boys made him feel.. annoyed.
He didn’t even realize he was clenching his fists until Toph hit him, albeit softer, on the shoulder. “Lighten up on the grip, sparky!”
“Sorry,” he said, blinking a couple of times. “Let’s keep going.”
This was going to be a long night for Zuko.
~~~~~~
You had separated from the group to get another drink, having already finished your cup in the time it took to tell a couple stories. You pursed your lips and picked a beer up from the cooler, then placed the cap on the edge of the table and slammed down on top of it with your other hand. The bottle cap fell off and you took a sip, pleased that it worked. It was a party trick you had picked up when you first moved to Kyoshi, and though using a bottle opener was loads easier, this was more fun.
“Nice move.” You turned around, surprised when you heard a voice behind you, nearly spilling your drink in the process. It belonged to a tall, brown haired boy with some interesting eyebrows and a toothpick in his mouth.
“Thanks.” You smiled lightly and moved to walk away, but he blocked your path.
“What, do I not get a name?” His words had an air of cockiness to them, and he leaned against the wall next to the table. “I’m Jet.”
“Ohhhh, you’re Jet.” You took a sip of your drink to mask your grimace and rolled your eyes, already looking around for Suki to get away to. Your sister had told you about her experiences with this guy, and though there was some irony in him hitting on you all these years later, you weren’t into it. “Yeah, no thanks.”
You started to walk away but he wrapped his hand around your wrist and pulled you back to him, causing you to let out a small yelp. You were already kinda tipsy, so you got much closer than you would’ve liked (being in the same room with him was too close to be fair) and he smirked at you. Now this, this was definitely how you wanted your night to go.
“Come on darling, just give me a chance. I’m not that bad.” He was attractive, you would admit that, but the way he was acting was a red flag that you weren’t going to miss again.
“Oh, I’m sure you are.” You tried to pull your wrist out of his grip but he wasn’t budging. You glared up at him and set your jaw. “Do you really want to do this tonight? Because I’ve got time, buddy.”
“I’m just asking a pretty girl for her name, it’s not a crime. Of course, I’ll also go for your number.” He was smooth as ever, unfazed until another voice cut in.
“She said no. Now leave her alone, Jet.”
You felt his grip loosen on your wrist and you immediately pulled away, looking over to see who had saved you from the fight that you were sure was imminent. Your eyes lit up when you saw that it was Zuko, and you backed over so that you were on his side. You noticed he ever so slightly positioned himself in front of you.
“Ah.. You two a thing?” The confidence from before was replaced with what looked like anger with a hint of jealousy.
“No, he’s just a guy that knows what ‘no’ means,” you shot back. Now you wanted to fight, but Zuko took your hand and shook his head.
“He’s not worth it. Let’s go, Y/N.” He started walking away and you followed, but were unable to resist one more jab at that cocky jerk.
“I’m not into jerks that fuck over my sister!” You yelled over your shoulder as Zuko pulled you away. The two of you emerged out of the apartment onto the empty balcony, and you inhaled the fresh air.
“Thanks for that. I think I would’ve started a fight if I stayed there for another second.” You tipped back the rest of your beer and frowned, twirling the bottle between your fingers before setting it on the ground next to you. “God, this sucks. Why am I drinking it again?”
“Because you’re a broke college kid that wants to get drunk at a party thrown by other broke college kids?” Zuko offered helpfully.
You hummed in agreement and leaned your back against the railing, pointing your finger at him. “Right on the mark, mister.”
He smiled as he leaned against the wall, conveniently ignoring the chair right next to him. You figured it was for his ‘cool guy image’, but it was once again doing it for you. “He didn’t hurt you or anything, right?”
You snorted and shook your head, running a hand through your hair as you looked into the night. The party was still going on strong back inside, but it was nice to get away for a moment, especially with Zuko. “Nah. If he tried anything, he would be the one getting hurt.”
Zuko chuckled, pushing himself up from the wall and walking over to you. Another thing you had noticed from living with him and being his classmate — this boy could not sit still. “I believe that wholeheartedly.”
“Does Jet have something against you?” You questioned, casting a glance at him. “Because as soon as you showed up, he looked really angry.”
“We have some.. messy history. Some stuff that happened in high school that he can’t let go.” Zuko stared down at the ground and you nodded, taking that as a sign to not push further.
“It’s like the only guys I attract are douchebags,” you groaned, letting your head fall back to stare at the sky. “But seriously, thank you. You never know how guys like that get when you reject them.”
“Anything for you.” Zuko’s eyes widened when he realized what he said and he tried to cover it up with a cough, stammering to fix it. “B-because you’re one of my roommates! And my friend! And it’s not like I would just leave one of my friends to fend by themselves especially when they’re drunk—”
“Shhhhhh.” You waved your hand in front of his face, trying to get him to stop. “You, my good sir, talk too much.” You let out a laugh at his expression and mimicked his stance, resting your forearms against the railing and shivering a bit as a gust of wind blew by. “Just.. stand here for a little with me. Appreciate the stars,” you crooned with a flourish of your arm.
You both stood there in comfortable silence, the sounds of the party raging behind you reduced to mere background noise as you became lost in your surroundings. It was just you, Zuko, and the sky.
“It’s beautiful,” you mused.
“It is,” he agreed. When you glanced at him, you saw that Zuko’s eyes had never left you. Your face immediately heated up and you averted your gaze with a small smile, self-consciously brushing a strand of hair behind your ear. This time when you shivered you felt something being draped around your shoulders and your eyes widened in surprise when you saw it was Zuko giving you his jacket. You prayed to any god that would listen that he couldn’t see how flushed your cheeks were.
“What are you doing?”
“You did say you would borrow mine if you got cold, right?”
You hummed thoughtfully and slipped your arms into the sleeves, already feeling warmer. Whether it was from not having your whole back exposed or wearing something of Zuko’s though, you didn’t know. “I guess I did.”
When you met his gaze again, it was like some invisible force was stopping you from looking away. All of the sounds of the party faded away, and it was like the world around you had stopped. It was just you and Zuko, and you unconsciously started leaning forward.
You jumped and nearly screamed when you felt a buzz against your back pocket, letting out a relieved breath when you realized it was only your phone. You pulled out your phone and tried your hardest to look absorbed in it, trying to pretend like you weren’t just about to try and kiss Zuko right then. That moment was completely and wholly ruined.
“Ugh,” you rolled your eyes as you read the text on your phone and started to walk back inside. “Apparently Aang and Toph have gotten into a debate about… moral relativism? God, I have no idea why they’re talking about that at a party, or who they’re even arguing with, but apparently it’s getting heated. Wanna come with?”
Zuko chuckled and shook his head. “I think I’ll take a few more moments out here. Parties drain me sometimes.” In truth, he needed a while to process what just happened between the two of you, what he had done. He definitely hadn’t imagined that moment, and he knew he would be thinking of your eyes and how they sparkled in the moonlight for days to come.
“Ah, I totally get you, man. Take all the time you need, text me if you need anything!” You winked at him and ran back inside, which Zuko reciprocated with a light smile.
~~~~~~
You spent the rest of the night having a great time — drinking more shitty beer with Sokka, dancing with Katara and Toph, singing so badly to the music with Suki that you were amazed they hadn’t kicked you out, and telling stories to anyone who would listen with Aang’s assistance (you two made a great team). The only thing you needed was some time with Zuko - besides the time you spent together out on the balcony you had hardly seen him doing anything that wasn’t hanging on the outside of the party. The not-so-hushed conversations between three drunk girls and the designated driver about it went just as well as one might think.
“Look how sad he looks! Who comes to a party just to not party?” You caught Zuko’s eye again and waved, which he returned with a smile and a small wave of his own.
“Zuko does. He’s all ‘look at me! I’m going to show how cool and brooding I am by not doing anything. All the chicks dig it,’” Toph mocked, dropping her voice lower to imitate Zuko.
“Toph, that is so mean! You can’t even see him.” Suki placed her hands on each side of Toph’s face which Toph immediately slapped away. “You are so beautiful. You are a beautiful blind woman, and we need to dance.”
“Suki, why are your hands so cold- oh my GOD—” Suki grabbed Toph’s hand and pulled her into the fray, causing you to dissolve into giggles. You grabbed Katara’s shoulder and looked back over at Zuko.
“He looks so sad, Katara! I can’t stand it!” You stared your sister in the eyes and put your other hand on her shoulder. “I’m gonna ask him to dance. I’m going to pull that beautiful man out of the shadows of his angst and I’m going to make him dance to this trashy pop song with me and bring out his happiness.”
Katara snorted and placed her hand over yours on her shoulder, casting a glance at Zuko as well. “Are you sure? I mean, I’m pretty sure the only reason he’s here is because he has to drive you guys home.”
“My dear sister, I’m afraid to tell you that you are wrong. No one—” you gestured to yourself. “—can be sad around this.”
You clapped Katara on the shoulder then pushed your way through the crowd until you got to Zuko, not even giving him a chance to react before you grabbed his hand and started pulling him behind you back into the center of the party.
“What are you doing?” He yelled, having to raise his voice to be heard over the music and everyone around the two of you.
“I’m getting you to dance with me!” You grinned, letting go of his hand and facing him once you had gotten far enough in. He looked so out of his element that your eyes softened immediately and you put your hand on his shoulder.
“Zuko, if you’re uncomfortable then you can tell me and you can go back to what you were doing before. But please, just give this a chance for one minute. I think you’ll have fun.”
A beat of silence passed before he nodded, and your smile returned. “Y/N, you know I’ve danced before, right?”
“I don’t doubt it. But you haven’t danced the Y/N way.” The song conveniently changed to an upbeat, commercial pop song, and you gasped. “And this is the perfect song to start with! Come on, just follow my lead!”
You started to dance like no one was watching, jumping up and down, waving your arms around, and doing some truly ridiculous moves. Zuko stifled a laugh and you beckoned for him to come closer. “Get in on this, man! You promised me one minute, which means one minute of this.”
Zuko started to inch closer but you grabbed his hand once more and pulled him in, doing all of your moves from before but this time holding onto his hand. You looked so carefree, so happy, that Zuko couldn’t not do this with you. You were right that this wasn’t his scene, but he would do a lot of things if it meant seeing you like this.
Suki ran back to Katara, pulling a disheveled Toph behind her, and she gestured with her head at you and Zuko with a questioning look. “Is Zuko.. dancing? To a trashy pop song?”
Katara chuckled and nodded. “Yep.”
“Oh my god, is she wearing his jacket?”
“Yep.”
“Zuko doing things at a party and not just brooding in the corner? I think the world’s about to end,” Toph said.
“I think my sister just has that effect on him, somehow.” Katara sighed happily, looking back at her two friends with a twinkle in her eye. You grabbed onto Zuko’s hands and pulled him closer, swinging your hands back and forth between the two of you as the song changed to a more chill beat. “I haven’t seen him smile this much in ages.”
You ended up dancing together for a whole lot more than one minute.
~~~~~~
“I just- I want you guys to know how much I love you. Sokka brought us to this cool ass party, Aang is a ball of literal sunshine, my girls always got my back, and Zuko gave me his jacket because I was cold. Not that I could be cold around you, because you. Are. Hot.” Your words were slightly slurred as you and your friends walked through the parking lot. and your eyes widened as you started taking it off. “Oh shit, do you want this back? I totally forgot that I was wearing it.”
“No- no, you can keep it! I don’t mind.” Tonight had definitely changed something between you and Zuko. Your time on the balcony together, him giving you his jacket, somehow roping him into dancing like an idiot, and all these compliments that you were just throwing around? His feelings were all over the place, but it was just the party getting to him, right? You two were friends. Nothing else. But the more you flashed that smile at him, the harder it got to convince himself that was all you two were. That it was all he wanted you two to be.
“Alright, so let me get this straight. Toph and Y/N are coming home with me to our dorm, Zuko is driving the boys back to their apartment, and Suki is abandoning us to get it on with my brother?” Katara questioned, clicking the button on her keys a few times to unlock her car.
“I’m not abandoning you if I told you about it before we came here!” Suki and Sokka were holding hands, constantly whispering and laughing to each other the entire way out of the apartment. “You know that every party there’s a very real possibility of us going home together.”
“Yeah, and I try not to think about it,” she said wryly as she helped Toph into the passenger seat. “Make sure they don’t do anything stupid, Zuko?”
“I can’t make any promises. You know how they are.”
“Hey! We are two adults in a loving relationship and we are allowed to do whatever we want—” Sokka protested, leaning against Suki for support.
“We don’t want to hear about that, Sokka! Just— don’t mess up my part of the room, okay? And if you do anything on my bed I will ruin you.” You pointed at him accusingly and Suki gave him a big kiss.
“Don’t worry, Y/N! It’s all gonna be fine,” Suki grinned at you and poked Sokka’s cheek, and you shook your head.
“I’m too drunk and too sleep deprived to deal with this,” you grumbled as you climbed into the back seat of Katara’s car, nearly falling over as soon as you sat down.
“Take care of her, okay?” Zuko muttered to Katara as he walked past her. She mock saluted and grinned.
“As if I’m capable of anything else.”
Through the window you could see Aang and Zuko talking about something while you left the parking lot, but you couldn’t hear them. “Whaddya think they’re talking about?”
“It’s probably nothing,” Katara said with a smile.
~~~~~~
Soon, you, Katara, and Toph were all back at the dorm, sitting on the floor talking together. It had been a long time since you had gotten some girl time, and no other time was better than after partying your heart out.
You pulled out your phone and stared at it, tuning out Katara and Toph as they started going on about one of their classes. You had an internal conversation with yourself, then unlocked it and went to your messages. Drunk you was taking control, and drunk you was not the smartest.
Why people Say Kataang was one sided? Can You Say a argument prove otherwise, and why zutarians can t accept the reality?
I’m just going to cut and paste directly from the video essay script I wrote about Kataang (that I’ll hopefully finish one day). Apologies for the long response, but I want to hit every point I’ve seen made by the fandom over the years.
There are many things that Aang brings to Katara’s life that make their relationship balanced and healthy rather than one-sided as people like to claim. It’s quite obvious to most viewers why he would develop feelings for her - Katara is smart, beautiful, talented, generous, and an all around kind and good person. She cares for him and always looks out for his best interests. So what does Aang bring to the table?
Firstly, he offers her unwavering support and validation. If there’s one thing that Katara values and is proud of, it’s her bending and her heritage. Within moments of meeting her, Aang offers to fly Katara to the North Pole so that she can find a master to study under. In The Waterbending Scroll when she is feeling inferior and insecure about her bending, he reassures her and restores her confidence. In The Waterbending Master, he voices his frustration with Pakku not wanting to train Katara and then teaches her what he’s learned in secret because he knows how important mastering bending is to her. He throws all of his energy into helping her when he finds out she’s been masquerading as the Painted Lady knowing how passionate she is about saving the local village.
Katara is self-sufficient and is the caretaker of the group. While she allows herself to be vulnerable with her emotions, she often relies on herself for support and is a rock for the people closest to her. Aang is the one person who can act as a caretaker for Katara, however, as he isn’t overbearing. Katara doesn’t need someone to be her constant guardian or protector because she is so strong-willed. This is exactly why Aang’s subtle and gentle reassurance is so welcomed by her.
Secondly, he understands her and empathizes with her. There’s an argument tossed around about how Aang only fell for an idealized version of Katara and doesn’t recognize her flaws, which is a gross mischaracterization on fandom’s part. Aang is there for every mistake Katara makes, every grudge she holds, and every breakdown she has. They disagree about how to approach things on several occasions but always come to a healthy and respectful consensus, even if they don’t see eye to eye.
A prime example of this would be The Southern Raiders, an episode that Zutara shippers tend to exalt as the epitome of why Zuko and Katara should be together as Zuko supports her on her quest to find her mother’s killer while Aang does not. In actuality this episode proves a better case for Kataang. Aang gently tries to persuade Katara not to do something he fears she will regret. He concedes despite disagreeing with her. He acknowledges that it’s something she has to do to find closure. Even after confronting Yon Rha, Zuko admits to Aang that he was right about what Katara needed and that violence wasn’t the answer.
(Sidenote: It’s a bit baffling to me that people are alright with Katara stopping Aang from going into the Avatar State and unleashing his anger on the sandbenders who stole Appa, but they can’t understand why Aang would want to stop Katara from unleashing her anger on Yon Rha.)
Katara lost her mother and is the only bender of her tribe at the story’s start. Aang lost his father figure, his entire race, and is the only bender of his tribe as well. To say they have a profound understanding of one another’s pain and anger is almost underselling their connection. This, of course, doesn’t minimize the tragedies and suffering that other characters experience throughout the series, but it’s Aang and Katara who go on a journey of healing and discovery together. (I recommend reading this amazing meta about their relationship here.)
It’s also simply not true that Aang is obsessed or possessive. His crush on Katara gradually and organically develops; he doesn’t start to show romantic feelings towards her until well into season one during The Fortune Teller. When he does seek out her attention in The Warriors of Kyoshi, he admits later in the episode that he was being a jerk and apologizes for his behavior. He lets her go in Bato of the Water Tribe after realizing his mistake and doesn’t attempt to chase after her. He isn’t jealous nor does he try to prevent her obvious crush on Jet. Many argue that his course during The Crossroads of Destiny is selfish in that he isn’t willing to give up Katara to open all of his chakras, but he wouldn’t have left Guru Pathik if he didn’t have a vision of Katara being in danger. At the end of the episode he concludes that he has to relinquish all of his earthly possessions and does successfully enter the Avatar State.
Katara is the first to declare out loud that she loves Aang in a platonic way in the first episode of season two and is outwardly offended by him not wanting to kiss her in The Cave of Two Lovers. She feels deeply saddened by his pain. She is moved by him telling her how profound his feelings are towards her. She is openly affectionate with him.
All of this could simply mean that Katara cares for Aang like a brother, but luckily we have Sokka to compare and see how monumentally different her relationship is with the two men she’s closest to.
While it’s true that Katara often treats Aang in a motherly fashion, she does so with everyone in their group of friends and even total strangers. Maternal instinct is deeply embedded in her nature, and Zuko isn’t exempt from this once he becomes part of the Gaang.
Katara isn’t incredibly affectionate with Sokka. They hug on occasion and will sometimes offer physical comfort to one another, just like Katara and Zuko. She’s very much touchy/feely with Aang, however, kissing him on the cheek, fixing his clothing, dancing with him, and cradling him close.
She’s also very sarcastic and teasing when it comes to her relationship with her brother. She knows she can poke fun at him and pick fights with him, and once she and Zuko become friends, she treats him in the same manner. Katara becomes offended or even enraged if anyone dares to insult or joke about Aang.
She and Zuko both express their disgust at the idea of being romantically involved, both when the Ember Island Players imply that they had a thing and when June calls them boyfriend and girlfriend. When she hears Sokka point out that Aang is a powerful bender after Aunt Wu’s prediction, she shows no signs of distaste in realizing that Aang could potentially be the man she marries one day.
Dragon's Breath
So, I was thinking about how Iroh is the Dragon of the West because he breathed fire, & how breathing fire is pretty commonly used & known in A:tLA. So, what makes him so special?
Note: I found all of these by searching for “breath” on the Avatar wiki’s episode transcripts. The only fight I rewatched was the finale, in which I caught an extra one. I also got the “roar like a tigerdillo” scene. Both of which were written as “fire [comes out of Aang’s] mouth.” Sorry if I missed any. Of the 16 instances of fire breathing I found in the main series, one was done by dragons (Yes, I’m only counting it once despite Ran & Shaw both doing it), one was a puppet, & two were dreams: Aang in the Avatar State & a giant flying hippo cow.
Tumblr media
Of the 16, only 5 were during combat, not before (& not including the puppet or hippo cow). & only tree were attacks. Of those three, one was only steam; no fire was produced. That only leaves the time Iroh did his demonstration for Azula; & the time Ozai was captured by Aang, right before his bending was taken away.
Tumblr media
If I wasn’t reading the transcripts, I would have never realized that Ozai had done that. (I might have the 1st time I watched but I was 8 so...) That leaves the one time Zuko breathed fire in response to Iroh’s antics; & the time Azula was chained. & both times Aang “roared like a tigerdillo” during training. It also leaves the three times Zuko used the “breath of fire” to stay warm in the north pole & the freezer. The last three are before combat shows of power. These seem to only be an intimidation tactic. One is dream Aang; the other two are during Sozin’s comet.
Tumblr media
Now, Iroh makes a considerably powerful blast for a long duration in Ba Sing Se. If you exclude the demonstrations during the comet, it’s easily the most impressive display. The only things that comes close is Zuko’s huff of frustration- which was out of combat, short, & mostly smoke; as well as Aang’s training at the beginning of the finally- which was post-dragon revelation, done by the Avatar, & under the Dragon of the West’s beloved nephew’s instruction. It seems Iroh earned his title. & the in-universe explanation of learning it from the Sun Warriors fits the bill.
Tumblr media
But what about Korra? Well, she does it six times, herself. For four, she’s bound up; & for the remaining two she’s poisoned. No one else does it in the show. Most of them were pretty impressive though-- comparable in size to Azula’s during Sozin’s Comet, but even with the show being set long after Iroh’s time, I’m still chalking it up as a difference in the animation style. Also, she’s the Avatar.
Tumblr media
Either way, this still leaves Iroh as the only person to voluntarily use “dragon’s breath” without outside influence (read: being poisoned or restrained) during a combat situation. What about extended canon? I can’t be bothered to check the comics, but I do love the Kyoshi novels so, [SPOILERS FOR SHADOW OF KYOSHI] There is one more instance of fire breathing in the Avatar canon. Rangi makes (nearly) white dragon’s breath in the final fight. This can be explained by her emotional state, talent, & power; but let’s have some fun with some other reasons she & Iroh are such good fire breathers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Side note: I am quite font of smithing, & I can tell you from experience that a blue flame is much, much, much easier to make than a white flame. I’ve made blue flames on accident; I’ve never made white. [spoiler over] Between Ty Lee’s chi blocking, Iroh’s explanation of lightning redirection, & Guru Pathik guiding Aang through Avatar state mumbo-jumbo; we can pretty safely assume that bending is about moving chi throughout a bender’s body. Which means chakras probably have a lot of bearing on a person’s bending. Pathik said that “the Sound Chakra [is] located in the throat. It deals with truth and is blocked by lies. The ones we tell ourselves.” We know Iroh had completely changed his outlook on life after Lu Ten died. & even though he still had some issues during the show (ex: June), he reached some form of enlightenment before his death & shows up in the Spirit World somewhat often in LoK. So this all tracks with him being truthful with himself; not to mention the other chakras.
[spoiler BACK]
But is this applicable for Rangi?
Now, it’s been awhile since I read the books, so if I’m off-base here, feel free to call me out.
Rangi’s never really shown to be spiritual, & her short fuse doesn’t lend itself to a more mundane version of enlightenment (The fight with Koulin; flipping a table off of a balcony at the Fire Nation Palace,). So, purposeful chakra manipulation is pretty much out the window.
But Pathik said the throat chakra was only about not lying to yourself. & we never really see Rangi have much self-doubt, or overestimating her abilities (The lei tai; jet-stepping,). The only time we really see her doubting herself or her place is when she’s worrying about (failing to protect) someone else; or becoming accustomed to the Flying Opera Company, & even those are a direct result of being the Avatar’s bodyguard.
Now, we don’t know when the Sun Warrior’s technique stopped being common in Fire Nation culture, & dragon’s weren’t extinct until Aang’s time, so it’s possible that it can be partially assumed as a lost art. But in Rise of Kyoshi, Xu Ping An was the only person who knew lightning generation. (The wiki doesn’t say anything, but I could’ve sworn I remembered Rangi doing it at some point.) She also invented jet-stepping after seeing a waterbender & two earthbender do similar techniques one time.
Actually, now that I think about it, I think that the pure amount of time Rangi was able to maintain a near-white flame with a little used technique makes this the most impressive display of firebending done by a human (without the aid of Sozin’s Comet) in A:tLA canon.
Tl;dr Kyoshi’s girlfriend is the Dragon of the East.
Avatar: The Last Archivist
The main characters from Avatar: The Last Airbender as different Avatars from The Magnus Archives.
I did 14 characters, one for each entity.
Trigger Warnings: Basically every TMA entity. Specifically mentions of claustrophobia, cannibalism, suicide, manipulation, ect.
____
There is a boy, with eyes like a stormcloud, deep and fathomless. He has arrows tattooed on his head, on his arms. When you ask about them he laughs, and says ‘when I’m upside down’ as though that was all the explanation. He asks if you want to do something fun, a roller coaster, skydiving, a trampoline park. When you agree, it is fun, at first. You close your eyes to protect them from the rushing wind. When you open them again, the ground is gone. There is no down. There is only sky, and you are falling. Beside you he laughs, bright and joyous and childlike, though it can hardly be heard over your screams. His arrows are pointed up, wherever that is. As he cannonballs past you for the 3rd, 8th, 19th, 76th time he says that ‘fear is what makes it fun’. His ‘woops’ cover your sobs.
There is a girl, dressed in blue with loops in her dark brown hair. She watches you with soft, sad eyes and says ‘It’s so sad, isn’t it? Being the last.’ ‘The last what?’ you ask, but you know. ‘The last of your kind. There is no one to teach you how to reach your potential. You’ll never be able to train anyone to be like you. You’re the last.’ ‘I am.’ You say, feeling cold as a painful pressure settles on your chest. It feel like you could drown in your loneliness.
There is a boy, one who looks similar to the girl, who loves meat. Grilled, roasted, stuffed, boiled, hunted, farmed or store bought. Any kind of meat, cooked in any manner, at any time. In the moments where he is not eating meat, he is thinking about it. He eats, and he eats, and he eats, until he is long since the point of caring what the meat is. Who the meat is. As he finishes his plate he looks to you and licks his lips.
 There is another boy, pale of skin and gold of eye, with a burn that stretches across his face. “I will capture my prey.” He vows. “And then my honor will be restored.” He hunts, and he tracks, and he follows a prey that can never escape. If you find yourself his prey, you can hide and run and fight, but will sone find his claws surrounding you. However, even as he catches you, his mind is on his next target, for his prey is not what he truly seeks. He will never achieve what he really wants, but still he hunts for it. He knows that the capture is the least thrilling part of the chase.
 With him travels an older man, a man who is kindly, portly and always grants a smile. He offers you a cup of tea and a game of Pai Sho, but from your first sip and his first move, he Knows you far better than you know yourself. He gives you tea exactly as you like it, and every move you make he has something to meet it. His words are proverbs and pretty saying, but all touch a part of you that he should not know. He Knows. He Sees.
 There is an island in this world, where women with painted faces and fans of blades congregate. Practice. Fight. They learn to use the force of others against themselves. They learn to go for the throat They are more willing to fight than to ask questions. In the water there is a monster that they feed the ships that dare get close. In their hearts there is a monster that they feed the souls of those who survive to reach the land. Tearing them apart until blood and bone can be used to paint warnings on their faces.
 There is a boy. He is at home in the woods, living in the trees and filth and gime. He collect people. Children. They build homes in bug-filled trees until they have their own hive infesting the forest. A piece of wheat sticks in his mouth, green-blue and fuzzy with mold. He sees sickness in those that invade his home. He sees corruption in those outside of his hive. He stands at the foot of a dam, working on the logs until rot eats through them, purging the woods of the existing host and giving more room for his parasitic hive to grow.
 There is a girl with long white hair. She has a kind smile, and mourning eyes. She tells you ‘You’ve always known that this was your fate.’ And you realize that you did. ‘You were given life for a reason, it makes sense that this would be asked of you.’ It did. What reason did you have to live except for this. You always knew it would come to this. ‘You are doing this for your people. It is your duty. It is a noble sacrifice.” You nod. You take whatever it is she offers you. And you End.
 There is a man who is in the dark. He does not see truth, does not see life. He walks in the dark and in doing so imagines himself bigger than he is, and imagines others as smaller. He wishes to spread his darkness, an insipid thing that seems to be a tangible presence in any room he is in. When you are near him, colors leech away to a point that the world seems to exist in black and white and grey, no matter how much light or color you attempt to introduce. If given enough power, he would gladly blot out the light of the moon itself, plunging the night into wholly his domain.
 There is a young girl whose feet never leave the ground. In her hair there is a constant layer of dirt and dirt. Her eyes are milky-white, but she never trips and never struggles. You ask her if she needs help and she laughs and laughs and laugh. She seems to grow as she does, until you realize that you are sinking. You are up to your ankles-shins-knees-thighs- in the dirt. She says that she cannot see, but in the ground she is no difference for her or anyone else. She says that one cannot stumble or trip or fall if they cannot move because of the ground’s embrace. She says that strength and sight and title means nothing to the earth. She sinks into the ground with a happy sigh right as the ground meets your eyes. Then you can see no more, and as she said, the earth cares not for your struggles.
 There is a girl who is an acrobat in the circus. One may assume she would be a stranger, but no. She is quick to introduce herself, to identify herself apart from those she is often lumped with. However, there is something… not right. Her body bends and moves in a way that it Should Not, that the human body Can Not. She twists and flips and bends until her form is completely unidentifiable as one of flesh and blood and bones like yours. Her smile stretches a bit wider than lips should allow. She can make you do things, or make you stop, a few simple pokes and your body will no longer listen to your mind. A few more nudges and your mind will no longer listen to you.
 Her friend is a Stranger though. A girl wo dresses plainly, with a face as expressionless as a mannequin and a voice that is as dry and as bland as an uncooked grain of rice. She holds knives sharp enough to flay your skin from your body. Sharp enough to flay your identify from your self. She reacts to little and speaks to less. You may know her name, but she will never allow you to know who she is.
 The acrobat and the stranger dance and dangle at the strings of the web. Their friend, a girl of sharp features and a sharper mind. She wields cruelty and knowledge and vulnerability as tools, weapons that allow her to say and do exactly what she needs to make others follow her desires. She will talk to you, and she will lead you. You will follow her without question, without thought, until your feet are stuck fast in spider silk. She can lead anyone into her web with a smile. All but one. She has never dared try to ensnare her Father.
 The girl’s father is cruel. He has ambition that supersedes the ability of every man, and does not care for consequences so long as he advances for his personal goals. He will burn through a bush and care not for the wildfire he started behind him so long as he can continue further. If anything, he will delight in having caused it. No one is safe from the destruction. Not his people, whom he destroys without reason and without care. He delights in the anguish they feel and the anguish their demise causes. Not his son, who bears his burn and hunts for an honor never lost. Not the world, which is slowly being burned around him. Not an ember touches his skin. If her were to burn you, he would likely never notice.
Do Jet &/or haru for the ask game!
I can’t choose so I’ll do them both!!!
Jet
realistic: River brought up this really interesting point from the Kyoshi novels on one of my Jet posts about how EK folks are really hostile to orphans, which has led to me hcing that one of the reasons Jet was so cavalier about the whole Gaipan situation is because he was forced to not only survive himself on his own (as a literal eight year-old boy until when we see him as a teenager, but to care for five other people and fight what seems to be a futile battle against the FN, without any help from the people of Gaipan. I also think that after the gaang leaves Gaipan, the people turn from being passively to actively hostile towards the Freedom Fighters, which leads to their downfall.
hilarious: this is really only funny to me but I always have Jet inexplicably working service after the war, just because I think it would be absolutely bizarre for him to go through all of that only to serve tea to EK randos. it isn’t an hc I use when I’m deeply exploring his character (not ready to make nice is not going to end with Jet working at the Jasmine Dragon) but it is a fun way to include him in stories where he wouldn’t have much of a role otherwise.
heart-crushing: cannot get Until Ba Sing Se out of my head so I’m going with an hc from that fic that Haru and Jet met and had a relationship prior to Jet, Smellerbee, and Longshot going to Ba Sing Se and that’s what Jet thought about when he told Katara he was fine in “Lake Laogai”
unrealistic but I love it: Jet lived after Lake Laogai, got therapy, and opened an orphanage with Haru and the rest of the Freedom Fighters, as well as doing some political organizing against the EK monarchy and the Dai Li
Haru
realistic: this might just be canon lmao but Haru’s relationship with his mom is very “overprotective mom of color inflicts trauma on her son by forcing him to hide a huge part of himself in an attempt to protect him from structural trauma” (which sidebar is one of the reasons a queer reading of Haru is compelling to me personally, like typically when white people write homophobia of color they don’t talk about how the homophobia of our cishet parents often comes from a misguided attempt to protect us from even more trauma than we’re already going to face as poc. I don’t like to write homophobia in the ATLAverse and I tend not to make it a central aspect of modern aus, but Haru’s relationship with his mom is something that resonates with me a lot as someone who has trauma from homophobia of color but also has the perspective now to realize that it came from a place of trying to protect me)
hilarious: I have to bring up Haru Thee Stallion here like come on that was hilarious and iconic, truly a stroke of genius.
heart-crushing: Haru remains cautious about Earthbending in public years after the war, especially in front of FN characters. Mai and Ty Lee don’t find out that he’s an Earthbender until they’ve known him for years.
unrealistic but I love it: the mustache was fake he was doing a bit
send me a character and I’ll tell you one realistic hc, one hilarious hc, one heart-crushing hc, and one unrealistic hc I love!
If There Was One Thing That Could Make Me Go ‘Spoilerphobia’ Good…
Although I generally don’t give a damn about spoilers and in fact sometimes seek them out, there’s a point the anti-spoiler crowd makes that I agree with. When you know how things are going to turn out, your viewing experience tends to change from “first-time discovery” to “analytical repeat viewing”. Suddenly, you’re not watching a story unfold, wondering how it turns out, but interpreting it in the view of the ending, assuming that everything that precedes it ties into and sets it up—because it should. Now, this doesn’t matter all that much if the thing you’re watching is internally consistent and actually does set up the conclusion.
If it doesn’t, well…
So anyway, if there’s something my ATLA rewatch highlighted to me, it’s how confusing and trippy it was to watch the show as a thoroughly-spoiled presumed Cataanger-to-be.
Here are my thoughts from eight years ago as I viewed the story for the very first time, knowing that Cataang was endgame and expecting the story to actually conform to the ship.
The Boy in the Iceberg
Tumblr media
“If no one told me Cataang was endgame, I’d have guessed from this single shot. A story about a hero saving the world, and when the hero meets the main female character it’s shown like this? Doesn’t exactly spell ‘trope breaker’ to me. I’m glad TPTB are committing to this ship and developing it from the get go.”
Tumblr media
“Though I don’t understand the necessity for the age/maturity gap, or for it to be highlighted in this way. It says quite a lot that while Aang views himself as a child and seems to have lots of growing up to do, Katara needs to be reminded she’s still a kid and almost immediately assumes the role of the Gaang’s resident caretaker.”
The Warriors of Kyoshi
“After a few episodes of pretty heavy stuff and Katara interacting with it while fully embracing her motherly role, we’re getting a filler with lots of space for developing the relationship in a romantic way... yet nothing happens. All pursuing is decidedly done by Aang who seems desperate for Katara’s attention which she doesn’t give to him until the end when it’s framed like a mum lovingly watching a nagging son. Neither does Katara recognise Aang’s obsession with fame for what it is—a desire for her to be smitten with him, just a little bit. Not even the opportunity to display some jealousy on her part is seized as she seems more annoyed with his vanity than put out by being sidelined.”
Jet
“Alright, I guess Cataang is going to be the ‘get out of the friendzone’ type of romance because this is getting ridiculous. It’s been ten episodes and so far not a single sign of romantic interest on Katara’s part. Yet there is absolutely no doubt the girl’s crushing on Jet hard and itching to pursue it, war or no war, so it’s not like there’s any ambivalence in terms of her feelings for Aang—they’re not romantic at this point, period. I wonder what Aang will do to become a blip on Katara’s luv radar.”
The Fortuneteller
“So we get a romantic shot of Katara from Aang’s POV, a hilarious romantic shot of Aang from Meng’s POV, no indication that Katara perceives Aang as a romantic possibility at all, and the whole episode is about unrequited crushes, failing to catch your crush’s attention, needing to move on, and destiny being bullshit. Yup, definitely the ‘get out of the friendzone’ type of romance.”
Tumblr media
“OK, I’m confused because there is some thematic clashening going on. The point of the episode so far has been about not minding prophecies and that everyone’s the master of their own destiny, yet Katara’s marriage to a powerful bender is apparently bang on the money? So what is the story telling me, that a) Katara learned nothing about her crippling reliance on fate? Or that b) she’ll pursue Aang, of whose existence she needed to be reminded, to fulfil Aunt Wu’s prophecy? I don’t think I like this. On the other hand, the romance is beginning at last. It’s now impossible for Katara not to factor this revelation into her dealings with Aang, and since Cataang’s endgame, there’s no way she won’t see him in a new light. We’re totally getting lots of pining, aborted touches, and blushing, Toph’s-crush-on-Sokka style, baby.”
The rest of Book I—no sign of Katara’s emotional investment in a romantic Cataang whatsoever
The Cave of Two Lovers
“I have no idea why this episode exists. Not only does the legend of lovers from enemy villages not fit Cataang AT ALL, but the whole story is a thinly veiled excuse for getting the two of them to kiss—and they don’t? And Katara’s so weirdly utilitarian about it? You know, for a girl who was validated in her obsession with destiny and informed she could very well end up marrying this guy, she’s acting pretty nonchalant about possibly kissing him for the first time and forgets about it the second the plot stops hinting at it. So what was the point? Christ, I hope the experience at least finally gets Katara to reflect on her relationship to Aang.”
The rest of Book II—no sign of Katara’s emotional investment in a romantic Cataang whatsoever
Return to Omashu
Tumblr media
“OK, I really need her to verbalize her feelings once because ffs.”
City of Walls and Secrets
Tumblr media
“I could so do with a single moment of Katara reacting to Aang in a similar way and suppressing those feelings. Hell, being infatuated with his power as The Fortuneteller seeded would be enough at this point because I’m being fed nothing.”
The Guru
“My post-catholic brain has no idea what this episode is saying about Aang’s feelings for Katara. Are Avatars as an entity supposed to live like hermits, with no romantic relationships whatsoever, otherwise they won’t ever master the Avatar State and will only go into it at random? Wait, that can’t be correct—Roku is in a loving marriage yet can glow up at will, meaning that romantic love clearly isn’t an obstacle. So what, is Pathik full of crap? Well, no, because everything he teaches Aang works, up to and including his advice to let go of Katara. So what about Aang’s love is such a problem? I’m also pretty confused about Pathik’s likening of the Air Nomads to Katara. Like yeah, the love and belonging Aang had with the Nomads survived and was transformed, but isn’t Cataang supposed to be a romance, albeit one that’s so far failed to manifest? I didn’t get romance from Aang’s relationship to any airbender. I don’t get this.”
The Headband
“FINALLY, a clear sign of Katara’s romantic feelings for Aang. And it took only 41 prior episodes where she either treats him like a baby, or has to be reminded by outside circumstances that he exists as a romantic option, so it’s not like there was much setup. I would also appreciate if Katara didn’t realise she’s attracted to Aang in the very same episode where she literally pretends to be his mum but beggars can’t be choosers. I now feel pretty confident in saying that I’m getting Katara blushing and pining like crazy at last.”
The romance doesn’t come up again for the next seven episodes
The Day of Black Sun
Tumblr media
“WAIT, SHE WAS INTERESTED IN THE HEADBAND! She displayed romantic attraction! WTF happened? Why does she look like someone who was just violated by her sonion? OK, I need a resolution, I need them to address this, have a conversation, something!”
The romance doesn’t come up again for the next seven episodes
The Ember Island Players
“So we’re officially pretending The Headband didn’t happen, I guess. The only thing that surprises me at this point is my lack of surprise. Anyway, what’s the nature of Katara’s confusion? Because with four episodes left to go until the ship becomes endgame, I’d like more specificity as to her feelings since this line reads less like ‘I’m confused because war/I have no clue what my feelings are exactly’ and more like ‘I don’t know how to let you down gently/I had no idea you felt this way or what to do with it.’ Address this, please!!”
The romance doesn’t come up again for the 99% of the next four episodes
Avatar Aang
Tumblr media
“They turned my girl into a golddigger. Fucking end me.
So what I’m getting from this is either a) Katara wasn’t interested in Aang until he became the best candidate for Aunt Wu’s prophecy, or b) Aang was originally supposed to recognise his one-sided puppy crush for what it was and overcome it.
I feel dirty.
Anyway, I heard people are into Zuko x Katara, maybe there’s some decent brain bleach about that.”
🍉 jet recovery fic outline? 👀
anon let me tell you i accidentally deleted like 500 words of this on my first try. i’m sorry this took two weeks :(
also i am using a crowdsourced OC, so shoutout to @shortkingzuko @katarahairloopies @kdmcolorfulmagic @gingersnapped  and lmk if i missed anyone!!! edit to add @ordinaryfruitpunch 🥺
ok so: longshot and smellerbee get jet out of the catacombs. i imagine he has so much wrong: broken bones, internal damage, a concussion. he’s bed ridden for weeks at minimum, and frankly a lot of it doesn’t heal right/completely.
while ba sing se must have been difficult before (having to work for wages or steal from civilians rather than hunt/scavenge from soldiers), now they have to feed themselves AND jet. i imagine they sheltered in place during sozin’s comet, not able to transport jet anywhere else when there were beefed up FN soldiers everywhere. it must have been terrifying
after the war ends and the EK monarchy is restored, maybe they’re able to get proper jobs in the lower ring. longshot works in a restaurant kitchen, and maybe he’s able to get smellerbee a job there too. jet works a goods stand or something. he’s a good talker, he could probably haggle prices UP!
longshot is a great cook, and he and smellerbee decide to move to Republic City. jet refuses (and besides, do they have the money to buy three tickets?) although he acts tough about it, they’re all sad when they part ways
let me just say, i think longshot would be a wiz at creating complex flavor profiles. his restaurant is a hit, and before long they are able to send for jet to be brought over (if he wants) (he wants to, because without his friends it’s very lonely)
first they arrange for him to be able to stay in/near katara’s new hospital. they approach katara, who is eager to help! she is relieved to learn that jet survived, and listens to them describe his state since the catacombs. with regular healing sessions, his badly mended bones and other internal damage. what is trickier to heal is the effects of his concussion
@shortkingzuko proposed that jet’s mother had been a potter, so maybe as he gains more fine motor skills back, he signs up for a pottery class. i imagine people who can teach skills like that may go to teach for short periods in republic city
so once a week, longshot or smellerbee meet him to walk him to the pottery class and walk him back several hours later
the instructors switch at some point, from a mildly kind middle aged woman from somewhere north of BSS to a young man around jet’s age from kyoshi island (jet knows bc the distinctive blue robes + headband). their name is yū.
he’s very nice and is a very good teacher. the kind who makes every student feel like they’re getting special attention, learns everyone’s names and remembers everyone’s projects. he notices jet’s poor form and asks what makes it difficult for jet to do it correctly (i’m not gonna pretend to know what i’m talking about. something injury related).
yū thinks about it and comes back around to jet’s wheel 20 minutes later and shows him an adjusted method to fix his form. he fixes jet’s hand placement.  extra credit if this reminds jet vaguely of him helping his freedom fighters with something, perhaps showing the duke how to hold his weapon or something else. the point is, jet is a little flustered here.
yū checks in with jet whenever the class learns something new to make sure it’s doable for jet, and thinks of adjustments when needed. jet, usually so eloquent, is a bit of a mess. he’d never seriously had time to consider these kinds of feelings (i’d say he liked both katara and zuko, but he always had other things on his mind). he doesn’t really know what to do here but he’s pretty sure he likes yū
so there’s this he/they
one day after class, longshot is supposed to meet him but longshot is held up at the restaurant. so yu sits with jet and they talk. without the rest of the class there, jet is more emboldened. longshot can tell something’s up with jet as they walk back to jet’s place, but jet is purposefully misreading his expressions. (so he’s able to put off talking about it until smellerbee meets them and immediately reads longshot’s face and demands jet explain)
(so imagine smellerbee walking jet to class the next week and then... sitting in. to see who this guy is. jet sweating the whole time)
ok and then yu coming over and greeting smellerbee after the class is over, jet beat red as he makes easy small talk with one of his best friends and smellerbee giving him the Most Shit Eating Little Sister Look.
yu invites them to an earth kingdom cultural event in the city. then invites jet to his favorite coastal EK restaurant. and a tea shop. and a show. and.... you see where i’m going.
jet is... slow to build a new relationship, afraid that he’ll mess it up or that yu will get to know him and not like him, and unsure of how to just have a relationship unrelated to survival needs and not being in a caretaking role. so imagine how flustered he gets when they hold hands.
a year or so passes and jet is doing well now, and he’s been seeing yu for a handful of months, and then yu’s time teaching in the city is coming to an end so...
jet goes with him home to kyoshi island. at first he’s just visiting and meeting yu’s family, but then.... he doesn’t return to republic city.
he helps in yu’s family’s ceramics shop, longshot and smellerbee come to buy dishes for  their restaurant annually. perhaps others from the freedom fighters come to visit periodically.
inevitably, the gaang visits suki on kyoshi island and runs across him years down the road, and he’s happy and loved and he’s got the family he never thought he could have. the end
straight up i want to write a jet/yū fic so bad
i may give more description of yū if people are interested! or if their other parents (tagged above...) would like to contribute! this is the extended universe
oKAY BUT AVATAR FROZEN AU (ft. Zukka)
I was listening to Frozen on Broadway in the shower and it literally won’t leave my head y’ALL (sorry this is long, but I didn’t know how to do the read more thing because I suck so if anyone knows how, please lemme know!)
Katara: Elsa
Sokka: Anna
Zuko: Kristoff
Aang: Olaf
Azula: Hans
Druk: Sven
The Trolls Are: Iroh, Toph, Suki and Kyoshi Warriors, Mai, Ty Lee, Jet and the Freedom Fighters, maybe Yue idk yet
(Cabbage Man is Oaken)
Okay, so I know Sokka is the older sibling and Katara has Anna’s trust, but Katara is the last Waterbender in the SWT so
idk I’m still working it out since as soon as I got out of the shower I started typing this, but I think Katara and Sokka were a family ya know with Hakoda and Kya and Katara had her bending but the Fire Nation was still like iffy so they didn’t publicize it
Sokka thought it was SO COOL and always wanted to play with her powers ya know? They probably created Aang together, not sure about that yet anyways
Katara hits Sokka with her powers (ice maybe?) on accident and he’s dying, they go to “the trolls” but what imma call White Lotus and Yue is there or she was but had to give herself to the moon, but the moon spirit saves Sokka, has white strip in his hair like Anna, they wipe his memories of Katara’s bending
Katara is sad and scared and terrified so she shuts herself in her room and will not go penguin sledding or fishing or anything with Sokka and now Sokka is sad
Hakoda and Kya are eventually like Katara needs to learn how to control it or just rid of her powers, let’s go to the NWT and see if there is a good chi blocker or a master for Katara to learn from
they die on the ship, probably Fire Nation
(also, the war is still technically going on but also not? Not as intensely as it was in the show, but like, it’s there)
I’m not sure what to do about the chief stuff, so we’ll ignore that for now
It is Sokka or Katara’s coronation, Sokka is excited because he can leave their palace and Katara is not excited because she still doesn’t know how to bend or control it
Sokka runs into Azula and now let’s talk about the Fire Nation for a second
Ozai is still ruling, Ursa is gone, Zuko was banished and Iroh went with him
Ozai did burn Zuko’s face, probably for the same reason, so Iroh took Zuko and they went to the Earth Kingdom and met up with other people who had been hurt by the Fire Nation and they became a family and Zuko eventually leaves and finds an egg and it’s Druk! They become besties but Zuko leaves kind of for the same reasons as in Zuko Alone
Ozai is pretty pissed at the Water Tribes because they’re thriving or something and wants to rule them so he’s like “Azula, go hit on one of the siblings and make them love you and then marry them and I can- I mean, you can control the SWT and NWT”
and she’s like “dope I shall bring destruction onto their land eventually” because poor girl is getting manipulated:(
So, Azula and Sokka run into each other, Azula is a terrible flirt but so is Sokka and they bond over how terrible they both are at human interaction and Sokka is like “yeah after I turned ten, they never let me leave the castle so I have zero friends”
and Azula is mentally like wait I have no friends too:(... but is like “yeah I feel, I’m only the Fire Nation Princess, but it’s a boys only club, ya know? So no one takes me seriously”
and Sokka is like “you... I like you...” and definitely starts crushing and asks her to do an activity and yada yada yada
someone gets crowned, idk who yet
Azula and Sokka spend more time together and Azula is like “wow he is so starved for affection that if I asked him to marry me he’d probably say yes Father what kind of mission is this this is so easy”
so she tries it out and he’s like “SURE” and they tell Katara and she’s just not having it
“Sokka! The Fire Nation killed our parents!”
“Yeah, five years ago--” (or more, idk timeline yet) “--besides, this would be good treaty-wise and politically, ya know?” (so I guess this means Katara would become chief? Idk how that happens but we’ll figure it out)
and Katara is just “... SOKKA you just met this girl. Also, she’s Fire Nation!”
and he’s like “well you aren’t in charge on me so imma do whatever I want”
and Katara is like ahhhhh and he ends up pulling a glove off and she waterbends and everyone is like hbfvrvunyuibtuy wHAT
and Azula is like “ooh so there really is still a waterbender left in the SWT...”
Katara runs away and accidentally freezes everywhere she goes (for purposes of plot convenience, she goes to the Earth Kingdom without knowing it and freezes that too I guess? She’s pretty powerful, y’all
and Sokka is like “I gotta go after her!”
and Azula is mentally lie death mission, that gets him out of the way “sURE! I’ll stay here:)”
so Sokka goes and runs into Zuko and Druk
“Dragons are better than people, Druk, don’t you think that’s right?”
and he sees Sokka struggling to paddle a boat or something, again, don’t have land and stuff figured out here yet
Sokka basically annoys him into helping him
(and Zuko won’t admit it, but he kinda liked Sokka’s vibe and was like I haven’t spoken to a human person in years is it selfish to want this? He’s not disgusted at my scar...”)
Zuko does not tell Sokka that he is a fire bender, he mentions he used to live in the Fire Nation, though
Katara makes maybe not an elaborate ice castle, but she is like “LET IT GOOOOOOO” when she finds open land and just makes it so pretty and guys imagine Katara in an Inuit-style Elsa dress? Wouldn’t that be the most gorgeous thing??
Maybe she misses home so she remakes her village out of ice, maybe if she’s lonely (because Katara really hates being alone but she’ll do it for the good of her people) she’ll make ice sculptures of people from the village like her mom and dad and Sokka
also ya know what? No, I don’t want Katara to be completely alone. She finds Momo trying to hide from the cold and takes him in so it is Katara and Momo
Sokka and Zuko are riding Druk, but he’s tired so they aren’t super high, and Sokka is explaining what happened to Zuko and Zuko starts laughing because “you planned on marrying someone you just met? From the Fire Nation?”
“You’re from the Fire Nation!”
“yeah, it sucks. Why do you think I left? But seriously? That’s the funniest thing I’ve heard in three years!” (because I just decided it has been three years of him alone)
and Sokka doesn’t mention that it’s Azula yet because Zuko was already laughing at him but wait Zuko has a really cute and precious laugh--
they talk a bit and Sokka kind of mentions the strip in his hair and how it happened because he got pneumonia as a child and almost died but the moon spirit saved his lifeand Zuko doesn’t know how the frick to respond so he just “... that’s rough, buddy”
Actually, imma take back something I said earlier, they don’t make Aang, her unleashing her powers shakes the earth or water or something and the iceberg pops up and Zuko and Sokka find it and Sokka is like “Imma touch it”
and Zuko goes “wait no don’t touch i-- you touched it” and Aang pops out and is like “HELLO!”
and they’re like who the frick are you?
and Aang is like “I’m the Avatar, Aang”
and Zuko and Sokka just :0
or maybe Katara and Sokka like created him as a kid or like believed he would come back to save them and that kind of like manifested into what happened? Idk but somehow, and maybe more plot convenience, he knows who Katara is, maybe the monks told him she’d be his waterbending master before he got trapped?
“Katara? you’re looking for her? I’m looking for her too! She’s the most powerful waterbender in the world and I need to learn how to waterbend!”
“Woah cool! You should join us!” says Sokka
and Zuko facepalms because “sOKKA again with the people you just met!”
and Sokka is like “I just met you”
“Fair point”
“besides, you guys are some of the first people I’ve talked to in like 5-8 years!”
and Zuko and Aang get kind of quiet because wow now that Sokka mentions in, that’s super true for him, but also true for the both of them... they’re all lonely
so Aang is like “okay let’s find Katara!” and they talk and stuff on the way and Aang mentions being excited to visit the Fire Nation and see Kuzon and all of his airbender friends and Zuko and Sokka just ??? then it hits them that oh boy he’s been in that iceberg for a long time--
so Zuko tells him and Aang is big sad and goes into the Avatar State or something and idk imma come back to this
plus also more friendship bonding happens and more feelings between Zuko and Sokka happen
they eventually reach Katara and they’re all like wow this is gorgeous
and Aang is about to walk in and stuff and Zuko stops him “maybe Sokka should go first? Since she’s his sister?”
Sokka goes into the village, finds the one that looks like their house / hut / palace, sees Katara and they both start crying and hug each other and Katara goes “I’ve missed you so much”
and Sokka is like “why did you leave? Please come back, I’ll help protect you from the Fire Nation! No one will get to you!”
and Katara is like “that’s not what I’m worried about” and her eyes flicker to the white strand in Sokka’s hair. “I don’t know how to control it and I don’t have a teacher and I’m dangerous.”
“I have some friends who can help you find a teacher! Aang and Zuko!”
Aang hears his name so he runs out and is like “Hi, I’m Aang, the avatar, want a hug? You look sad”
and Katara is like this boy is a sweetie and must be protected at all costs so no hug from em because I hurt those I love:(
and then Aang says “The monks told me about you! It was like a hundred years ago, but they told me Katara would be my waterbending teacher! You’re the most powerful waterbender in the world!”
and she laughs and almost believes him but “No, no I can’t control it. What if I hurt people?”
And Aang is like “we can learn together then!”
and Sokka and Katara talk more, Sokka is like “please come back, we’ll protect you from the Fire Nation and help you find a teacher I need you I miss you” and Katara wants to so badly
but she says no
they talk and Sokka mentions that basically everywhere is frozen and Katara is just ???? and Sokka is like “please, you can unfreeze it and people will see you aren’t a threat!”
and Katara flips out, they argue a bit, she hits him in the heart on accident and screams so Zuko and Aang (who left) run out and see Sokka on the ground and Katara hyperventilating and Zuko helps Sokka up and kind of has to hold him up for a couple minutes and he begs Katara to come with them because she’s his baby sister and he’ll protect her and she’s crying and her hand instinctively touches her mother’s necklace and she tells him no and that if they won’t leave, she’ll make them leave and then Aang and Zuko start begging her too because Zuko just met her but he knows that she’ll play a huge role in stopping the war and that she is incredibly powerful (and also she’s so kind when she isn’t accidentally being dangerous, he thinks-- based off of the stories Sokka had told him and the look on her face after she struck Sokka
Sokka says no and Aang and Zuko stand firm beside him so Katara makes a giant sky bison named Appa or something who chases them out of the village and they all end up falling into the freaking cold water and Sokka helps pull Aang and Zuko out since he’s the best swimmer and we love Zuko but he’s kind of a terrible swimmer
and Zuko goes “thank yo-- what’s with your hair?”
“My hair? We just gout out of the ocean, you should see your hair”
And Aang pipes up with “no, your hair is white”
“Wait it’s what? Does it look bad?”
“... no?” - Zuko
Sokka goes “you hesitated you think it’s baddddd”
and Zuko says “no, no, not like that... it’s because your sister struck you, isn’t it?”
and Sokka thinks and realization kind of dawns on him “I never had pneumonia...” and it hits him and he groans “that’s why she stopped playing with me! We need to go back, I need to talk to her--”
and he falls as he tries to get up
Aang and Zuko share a look and are like “yeah, no, you need help or you’ll actually die again”
Zuko suddenly is like “wait? the moon spirit saved you that one time, right? maybe She can do it again! Come on! I have some friends who can help you!”
while all of that is happening, Azula is planning on assassinating Katara and the people of the SWT and visitors from the rest of the world are freezing so she’s like “I guess I’ll go stop her since she must have killed my fiance”
some others go with her and they find where Katara is hiding out and Azula kills Appa:( and faces Katara with her people
Katara easily get the others out of the way and then it’s her and Azula
“I don’t want to hurt you!” Katara says
Azula puts her hands down and says “I don’t want to either. Just come with us, fox the weather, and we can help you”
“Why should I trust you? Your nation has wanted to kill me for years!”
“mmm fair point”
they fight a bit, Katara ends up getting knocked out and they take her back and lock her up
going back to the trio and Druk, they’re going to the little corner of the Earth Kingdom where the White Lotus is and Sokka’s hair is getting progressively more white and he’s getting more cold and Zuko is starting to panic so he says “I’m going to show you something, but you have to promise not to freak out”
so Sokka nods and Aang is chill with it because he doesn’t hate firebenders like the rest of the world
so Zuko creates a fire and holds it close to Sokka who does indeed freak out and crawls to the other side of the dragon
and Aang is like “wow! That’s so pretty! Can you teach me that? I need a firebending teach too! It was going ti be Kuzon but...”
and Zuko goes to Sokka again and says “I didn’t want you to hate me. I’m not evil or anything like Ozai. You’re freezing, please, let me help you warm up.”
and Sokka is silent then says “I trust you” and Zuko kind of pulls him in and wraps his arms around Sokka to warm him up and Aang looks left out so Sokka tells him to join
and all three are like “wow. This is the most human contact I’ve had in years... it’s nice”
somewhere here I think would be a good time for Sokka to ask about Zuko’s scar and so Zuko tells the story and Sokka and Aang are pissed and ready to kill but before Sokka and piece together that Azula is his sister, they arrive
Zuko is like “hello, Zuko here! But you guys probably knew that, or at least Toph will-- oof!” because Toph runs at him and gives him a super hard hug and suddenly the White Lotus is surrounding him and are like “how are you?” “where’ve you been?” “we missed you!” etc, etc
and Zuko is like “haha I missed you guys too but um, I’m actually here for something else... he helps Aang and Sokka off of Druk and Toph immediately feels the change in their heart rates when Zuko helps Sokka and Sokka leans against Zuko so she goes “you got a boyfriend!”
cue matching looks of horror on the two’s faces and suddenly everyone is interrogating both of them and Zuko is like y’all!!! He needs help! Where’s Iroh?
he is ignored:/
“Zuko looks grumpy and he acts grumpy but really he’s a sweetheart and mushy!” says Ty Lee
“make sure you give him lots of hugs and attention because he will not tell you when he wants it” Suki says
and Zuko’s whole face is red and it’s the funniest thing Sokka has seen and he’s so invested in all of these people and their stories and wants to stay forever but then remembers Katara and Zuko finally is like “IROH!”
Iroh comes and sees Sokka and he’s like welcome back
and like at this point Sokka can barely stand and Zuko is supporting all his weight
and Zuko is like “you helped him when he was younger, please help him now!”
and Iroh is sad “there is nothing I can do, nephew. The moon spirit is generous, but to touch the same thing twice... an act of true love is the only way to fix this”
and Zuko gets sad and says “your fiance”
and Sokka kind of mutters “... yeah... my fiance” because now after spending a week minimum a month max with Zuko, Aang, and Druk, he definitely has feelings for Zuko but he’s confused
and everyone else gets sad and Toph is confused because she can feel their heart rates
but Zuko sucks it up and helps Sokka back onto Druk and they set back for the SWT and all Sokka is thinking is for Katara for Katara for Katara for Katara... was she right? Maybe I was too fast with Azula... but we connected and she wanted to talk to me and... for Katara for Katara...
so Katara is locked up and Azula is like “this would have been fine if you did not put up a struggle. If you surrendered peacefully we would not have to resort to this”
and then leaves because she hears that Sokka is back and Katara is like “I’m a monster, but so is Azula and I need to find Sokka and apologize and fix everything I’ve done, even if I die” so she escapes because Katara is cool like that
Zuko and Azula see each other and it’s awkward, but she sees Sokka in his arms and she realizes that he didn’t die and her idiot brother helped him they make eye contact and Zuko can kind of tell what her plan is in her eyes but Azula feigns worry for Sokka and grabs him from Zuko’s arms before he can stop her and Sokka is like “Azula...” and she’s pretending and stuff and then she sees Aang and her eyes widen at his tattoos and Zuko shoves Aang behind him and says “You aren’t taking the avatar to Father. Just save Sokka, he doesn’t have much time left”
her eyes linger on Aang with interest but she turns and leaves and sets Sokka down in a room and Sokka explains it and tries kissing her but she just laughs and is like “oh, if only there was someone out there who loved you” and in his hazy and near death mind, Sokka understands it all because he may be naive, but he’s clever
“You’re Zuko’s sister”
“I am. You really were so trusting and naive to fall in love with the first person you see.”
“I’m sorry”
“What?”
“Zuko told me about your father... I’m sorry he’s manipulating you.”
and Azula shrieks, lights her hands on fire and is just barely able to stop herself from burning him, makes sure the fire in the room dies, mentions killing Katara and Zuko and capturing Aang, then locks Sokka in the room
and Sokka is crying because he should have listened to Katara and he just wants her to be okay and he can barely move, he can’t do anything to protect her from problems he caused and Aang is going to get hurt and he misses Zuko
and Zuko misses Sokka and Aang is like “okay, something’s up”
Zuko tells him about how Azula is his sister and he doesn’t trust her and that he thinks he loves Sokka, or has feelings for him at least
Aang goes “do you think Azula really loves Sokka?”
“... no”
“then we need to turn around. Druk!”
Azula tells everyone Sokka died because of Katara and that they nee to kill her and his last words were marriage vows
the door handle rattles and Aang comes in and Sokka shakes his head and he’s crying and says “you need to get out of here, she’s gonna kill you”
and Aang is shaking his head and saying “no, don’t worry! Zuko is here and he’s on his way! It’s storming really bad outside right now and he’s fighting off some guards, but he came back for you” and Aang helps Sokka up and out of the room but guards see them and Aang stays behind to fight them
Katara stumbled upon Azula as she tries escaping and they start fighting, kind of like the Agni Kai fight and it’s really epic and cool and stuff and then Azula says something like “stop fooling around and wasting everyone’s time. I am now the ruler of the SWT and I am ordering you to stand down!”
and Katara goes “ruler... where is Sokka?”
“Sokka? Oh, he returned weak and cold. His heart was frozen. Your brother is dead because of you”
and Katara falls to her knees and cries and Azula is like “ha weakness time to kill”
and Sokka sees Zuko and he’s “running” to him but then sees Katara and Azula about to kill her and jumps in front of her despite Zuko’s pleas and Sokka is frozen and when Katara looks up and sees what happened, she loses control and freezes Azula like she did in the Agni Kai and the storm dies down and Zuko and Aang run to her and she’s clinging to Sokka and crying and so is Zuko and then sibling love and he comes back
Zuko is like “love. It doesn’t have to be a kiss.”
and they hug and Sokka is back to his normal self except his hair is still white maybe, but he introduces Katara to Zuko and Aang formally and they all hug and then the White Lotus comes and Toph and Suki and Mai and Jet are all sad because they missed the fight but are happy that Sokka’s okay and Azula is still kind of there and idk what they do with her, I’ll come back to that, actually, maybe Azula manages to escape
but so it would end kind of ambiguously because Ozai is still there and the SWT is untrusting of Katara still so they have to flee maybe and they return to the White Lotus hide out and Zuko and Sokka have a moment where they are like “hey I think I like you”
then Sokka and Katara have a great sibling moment
and that’s how it ends
okay wow that was long and took an hour and a half to type but y’all this would NOT leave my head!!!! I feel like this doesn’t have enough Katara in it, so know that if I actually made this a thing, there would be a lot more Katara and more sibling moments and Zuko and Aang and White Lotus and stuff but uhhh yeah idk if this has been done before but it was living in my mind rent free (p.s. Mai and Ty Lee do have a history with Azula in this AU and there would be an Azula redemption at some point)
if anyone has any thoughts or feelings or anything to add, please do:) I wasn’t sure if I should make Sokka or Katara Elsa, but I went with Katara because she had the powers and Zukka happening worked better with Sokka as Anna, idk
It’s no secret how complex characters in avatar are, but one thing I found interesting is how my perception of the characters has changed over the years.
I was really little when the show came out, but I remember watching it a lot.
I was invested in the show up until a little after the movie disgrace came out, and I only ended up watching a couple episodes of the Legend of Korra. I took a long hiatus from the show until it was all but in the back of my brain.
Around early 2018 I suddenly remembered my love for this show that shaped my childhood and made me desperately want to be the avatar and bend all four elements. I ended up binge watching the show in about two days and fell in love all over again. I loved the show so much I ended up buying Avatar and Korra on dvd.
Rewatching the show was amazing because when I was little it was just a cool show with cool superheros, but now the depth is what amazes me.
I’m so thrilled with the re-awakening of this amazing show on Netflix and all the new and old fans enjoying it like it came out yesterday.
I’ve decided to share how my perspective on each character (that I remember) has changed over the years because it’s funny to see how childhood warps our image of things and how growing up can broaden our perspective.
Tumblr media
When I was littler, I remember trying to abide by Aang’s pacifist philosophy and wisdom sometimes, but I think most of it went in one ear and out the other. I rooted for him but knew he was still really young, and while I understood that there was a lot being asked of him, little me (about half his age) was thinking that if I was the avatar, I’d off Ozai in a hot second.
Now, twelve year old Aang is a baby in eyes. The fact that he made such mature and strong decisions is incredible. The kid deserves a lot of credit, and losing all of his people must have been devastating, but he was still able to carry on and do his duty while remaining cheerful throughout the series. The kid’s got my respect.
Tumblr media
As a kid, Katara was my absolute favorite throughout the series. She was beautiful, badass, had great hair, and was super sweet. I still love Katara, and she’s still all those things. Her journey makes more sense to me, but I can also see her flaws, which make her overall an even better character.
Tumblr media
Originally, my view of Sokka wasn’t so favorable. His character was completely pointless, and if I had known the meaning of comic relief, I would have accused Sokka of it and sent him right to character jail. The whole point of Sokka’s Master completely failed me.
Now, Sokka’s my favorite of all of them. The polarity is crazy, and I find it hilarious because Sokka is the closest of any fictional character to my personality. Clearly my self loathing started at an early age.
Tumblr media
My opinion of Toph hasn’t changed, she was baddass when I was little, and badass to this day. I used to walk around my backyard barefoot to be like her. The only thing about her that’s changed is my understanding of her character and backstory.
Tumblr media
I don’t really remember my exact opinion of Zuko, but I remembered him as the season one villain and when I rewatched the series I knew that he ended up getting a better haircut (I thought it was hot) and training Aang. I waited the whole ass series and somehow I had thought that there were more episodes with him in the Gaang.
Tumblr media
I remember wanting Azula to become a “good guy” desperately becuase I thought she was so awesome. I loved everything about her, her skill, her beauty, her clothes, everything she said, but especially her hair. I remembered the specific scene from the above photo, but not much else. I still want a redemption arc for Azula, but now I understand why more than my blind childhood admiration of her.
Tumblr media
Jet was a jerk with weird eyebrows then, now he’s just a dude with questionable morals and weird eyebrows.
Tumblr media
Appa and momo are through and through amazing, these two have aged like a fine wine.
Tumblr media
Kyoshi may not have been in very many episodes but I remember absolutely LOVING her. To this day she’s the baddest bitch around and every day my love for her grows. She’s my queen and the best avatar to ever exist.
This show is great for all ages. Fifteen years after its release and I’m still hooked on the plot and characters. I’m so glad that I get to rewatch this show and talk about it all over again.
Wang Fire the Date Crasher
Description: it’s Katara and Aang’s first date and what kind of overly protective brother would Sokka be if he didn’t spy just a little
Ao3 link
“I thought this was a date” Suki pouted while gazing at her boyfriend as he continued to adjust how he sat in order to see something behind her.  He looked like an overgrown child trying to get a view at the circus.
“We are on a date” Sokka said absentmindedly while still distracted with whatever was behind her.
 “Well explain these” Suki argued as she reached across the table to tug at the fake beard Sokka was wearing and with the other hand tugged at the long black wig sitting atop her head. They had actually seen the wig in the market along with other Mai related memorabilia- ever since Zuko was crowned as firelord not only has his status rocketed but Mai’s had too along with her style. Many young fire nation girls sought out to copy Mai’s signature hairstyle.
Sokka sat down properly and swatted away his girlfriend’s.“Hey hey be careful this beard has been through many adventures I don’t want it to be ruined” The warrior complained as he readjusted it. He then paused and struggled to find an actual answer to his question while Suki stared at him quizzically. “ uhhhh….roleplay??” Sokka finally answered almost as a question. The smart kyoshi warrior of course didn’t buy it for a second and decided to turn around and finally sneak a peek at what Sokka was struggling to look at earlier,
As she turned she immediately recognized the waterbender and the tattooed avatar sitting across from each other. Suki snapped back around to Sokka who donned an apologetic face and smacked him in the arm.
“Sokka! You just did this so you could spy on their first date!” she  yelled at him in a hushed tone so as not to create a scene in the public restaurant. She couldn’t believe he would do this, well actually she could, but she skipped out on training today for this so Suki felt justified in her reaction.
The water tribe boy resisted the urge to rub at the arm that got affiliated. His girlfriend was by no means weak but he wasn’t about to show how much it actually hurt.
“I-no-I just-I didn’t” he blubbered while trying to scramble for an answer but realized it was pointless “ fine you caught me” he resigned after a few moments.
“Why?! I thought you loved Aang, and don’t you trust your sister?!” she questioned him.
“I do! It’s just she’s my little sister and I don’t know I just want to be there for her incase something bad happens” he explained with a sigh, his secret plans were revealed. “Even  if it does give me the oogies” he adds as he sees the air nomad across the room holding his little sister’s hand while they made goo goo eyes at one another.
Suki was still mad but she let out a little smile from the heartwarming sentiment. “As sweet as that is, you know better than anyone else that Katara can hold her own. You really have nothing to worry about, let’s just have a nice evening together, without you being all overprotective. Sokka reluctantly agreed. Suki was right, as always, he had nothing to worry about.
Suki took off the wig with relief because it was getting a bit hot. Sokka was quick to try to grab it and put it back on her head “What are you doing?! what if they see us?!” he exclaimed.
Suki began to laugh at her goofy boyfriend “I don’t think they’ll notice” she retorted while gesturing to a giggling Aang and Katara across the restaurant. “Besides I don’t think these disguises are all that convincing” she claimed as she dropped the wig on the floor by her feet while shaking out her hair actually attached to her head “Why don’t you take off your beard too?”.
“I - uh- I can't, I kinda glued this to my face” Sokka admitted while mumbling towards the end of his statement.
Sokka agreed to not pay attention to Aang and Katara’s date and just focus on having a fun evening with Suki. That being said he did look over the kyoshi warrior’s soldier every now and then, just to be sure.
They went on to discuss the new girls who had joined the Kyoshi Warriors. Although the war had ended not too long ago there were many girls asking to join the warriors or to just learn self defense. It certainly kept Suki occupied, even more so because Ty lee offered to teach everyone how to block Chi which will be a great asset in battle but longer training sessions. Despite this she enjoyed it and the rewarding feeling all the same.  They continued chatting and every once in awhile Suki would joke about Sokka’s first interaction with the warriors, which Sokka did not laugh with out of stubbornness but he was grateful that Suki had set him in his ways, she’s really astonishing and he can’t believe he ever underestimated her. They continued like this until Sokka heard something that made him go stark white.
Three tables over there was another couple enjoying their evening, or budding couple. Aang and Katara sat across from one another not saying anything. This was their first date and although they both knew they had feelings for one another both of them have never actually been on a date before and they weren’t exactly sure how to interact. After a minute of awkwardly blushing at each other and passing pleasant casualties they both started laughing at themselves.
“ I don’t know why we’re both being so awkward, this really shouldn’t be different from all the other times we hung out” Katara pointed out.
“Only difference is I can do this,” Aang replied as he reached over to Katara’s hand that was resting on the table and held it. Katara blushed and giggled at this air nomad’s cheesiness and he began to laugh along with her. He really didn’t know what he was doing but it sure felt nice to hold her hand and Katara felt the same way. Aang was relieved Katara didn’t pull her hand away, he knew she had kissed him after the war ended but he had felt so bad after the night of the play, he didn’t want her to feel her boundaries were violated again. He hated that he made her feel pressured, he wished he knew how to do any of this. He wondered if any of the past avatars could give him guidance on this but he’s not sure that was the intention of being given worldly wisdom.
“What are you thinking about?” Katara questioned. Noticing Aang’s change in expression.
“Just how funny it is that I ended a 100 year war but I’m struggling to talk to my best friend, I always thought if I got the chance with you I’d know exactly what to do and I’d sweep you off your feet” Aang replied with a sigh.
“Don’t be silly, you have already swept me off my feet” Katara stated, making Aang give her a quizzical look. “Remember when we accidentally sent off the fire nation booby traps when we first met? You picked me up and carried me off to safety” Katara answered with a smile remembering that hectic day. He had remembered that day, before they had found the old fire nation ship that day was one of the funnest he had in awhile. After it had been announced he was the avatar none of the other kids wanted to play with him. Having Katara penguin sled with him made him feel so happy. He was terrified that when it was revealed he was the avatar, Katara would’ve reacted the same way as his best friends and distance herself from him but he’s incredibly grateful that she didn’t, even though he did put her tribe in danger. He doesn’t know how he’ll ever repay her for giving him a family when he lost his and everything he knew.
“I guess I did” Aang smiled back at Katara.
“Besides, do you think I have any idea what I’m doing either?” Katara pointed out to Aang. Although she was older than him by two years she didn’t really have any experience, all the older boys went off to war, the only boy she really interacted with was her brother. Sure during her adventures she met a few boys she found cute but none of them had the connection that she and Aang had. As much as her friends like to tease her about Jet and Haru, Aang was her first kiss, so she’s just as new to this as he is. “We'll figure it out together” she finishes as she squeezes his hand that she was still holding and leaning over to give Aang a kiss which he embraced happily. As they broke apart from their tender moment Katara noticed something, or more accurately someone, out of the corner of her eye.
“I can’t believe him!” Katara suddenly blurted, making Aang jump a little breaking him out of his trance. He instantly became alert, expecting some enemy from their past to be in the restaurant ready to fight because of the anger in Katara’s voice. When he looked around and didn’t see anyone that looked remotely threatening, Aang just stared at Katara with a puzzled face until Katara pointed to a table close to the entrance of the restaurant that had her brother wearing his ridiculous Wang Fire beard and Suki with a wig by her feet.
“Ugh, does he really not trust me to go on a date by myself” Katara complained who had turned away from her brother who hadn’t noticed that she saw him and neither had Suki. “I mean I never pulled something like this with him and Yue or him and Suki, he could at least do the same” Aang gave a shrug in consolation and was not really sure what to do in this situation. He wasn’t surprised that Sokka would do this but he was disappointed and Katara’s moment was ruined.
Suddenly Katara had a devious grin slide across her face. “How about a little prank on my brother?” Katara suggested. Aang nodded, happy to do whatever she had in mind.
Sokka had noticed Aang and Katara getting up from their table, he tried to just look down in hopes of the pair not noticing him. He shushed Sukki which caused her to glare at him until she noticed that because of the location of the table in proximity to the door that Katara and Aang would walk by them. She put her head down as well making it seem like the noodles before her were the most interesting thing in the world. Although she was against her boyfriend’s idea of spying she still felt bad for being here, but she wasn’t gonna waste an opportunity to get some delicious food.
As the new couple walked by Sokka and Sukki’s table they overheard their conversation.
“I don’t know Aang don’t you think we’re a little too young to be that intimate but I am willing to try it could be fun” Sokka overheard her sister say. Sokka went stark white, she couldn’t mean what he thinks right? They wouldn't, right? Especially not Aang, isn’t he a monk- do monks even? Is Aang even old enough to-? Oh god he doesn’t want to be thinking about these things he’s starting to wish he never came.
Suddenly his sister walked back to his table where he was having a crisis. “No not actually, we’re only kids” Katara suddenly spoke up answering the questions she knew her brother probably had. “But that's what you get for spying” she stated, she then walked back to Aang who was blushing bright as a tomato because of the nature of the prank Katara pulled, he was expecting something like using waterbending to splash Sokka’s drink in his face. The young couple left the restaurant hand in hand as Sokka kept his hands in his face and Suki was left spitting out her tea with laughter.
A:tLA First Watch
So I finally started watching Avatar for the first time last week (after about 3 years of telling myself that I will) and I’m now approximately halfway through (I think - just finished the ep called “Stories from Ba Sing Se” or something like that where we get 5 minute stories about each of the characters, right after the creepy af “there is no war in Ba Sing Se” ep which just made my skin crawl
I’m going to write up current thoughts while procrastinating because there’s only so many times I can read the phrase “hard sphere behaviour” before my eyes start to bleed.
Thoughts so far in no particular order:
I love Katara she’s great, she was my favourite for all of book 1
Also she’s awesome at water bending now and I’m so proud of her
Sokka is kind of badass and also hysterical
I can’t believe his girlfriend actually turned into the moon I saw references to that here but I genuinely thought that was some kind of meme or a joke
Aang is baby and deserves better
Also he totally took a dive off into the deep end when Appa got stolen
Appa and Momo are god-tier animal level companions
Momo’s story in the ep I just watched was adorable and I cried when I saw that he tied a strip of Appa’s fur around his wrist and used it to comfort himself
Sorry Katara but Toph is my new favourite
I love her so much
Also kudos to her for not letting her disability or well meaning but overbearing parents get in her way ever
Iroh is the best uncle ever and he loves Zuko so much it is amazing
I want an Uncle Iroh
Also wtf I had no idea he was the older brother he would have made an amazing fire lord
On topic poor Zuko keeps being kicked when he’s down
I love him he deserves better than a his terrible dad and psycho sister
Cannot believe his dad gave him that scar
I would like to punch his dad in the face
Also I stan his mum for straight up murdering his grandfather to protect him
Which that whole situation was messed up but at least his mother loves him enough to do anything for him?
I have a lot of feelings about Zuko
His family is so messed up
Azula is a total psycho oh my god
Totally badass though
How old is she? Because from what I understand Sokka’s 17, Zuko and Katara are 16, and Aang and Toph are 12 - is Azula somewhere in the middle? Since I’m pretty sure she’s younger than Zuko (otherwise he wouldn’t be “first born”) unless they’re twins?
Yay for Aang mastering water- and earth bending already - so proud
Also I have low-key second hand anxiety over this poor boy being told he has like 6ish months to master three bending styles which normally takes years
Is it just me or are Katara, Toph, and Azula all total prodigies with how good they are at bending and how quickly they mastered their respective disciplines?
Suki is awesome and I really hope she comes back again
Speaking of I love how her and Sokka literally went from strong dislike to kissing over the course of like 2 eps and a total of about a weeks worth of knowing each other
Sokka seems to attract a lot of girls
Toph totally has a crush on him
He wouldn’t kiss Suki at night - is this going to be a thing for him where he doesn’t kiss people when the moon is up because of Yue? Because I feel like that will get complicated fast
How does bending inheritance work? Benders can have both bending and non-bending kids - can non-benders have bender kids? What if their parent(s) are benders?
Are we going to meet a Water Tribe Avatar at any point? Because we’ve met Roku (Fire Nation) and Kyoshi (sp?) (Earth Kingdom) who are both kind of awesome in different ways but no indication of any of the others
What happened to Zuko’s crew from book 1?
Very glad that Zhao guy got totally wrecked by the Moon and Ocean spirits after what he did - I kind of hated him from the get go
Are we ever going to see Jet again? Seriously what happens to him after the brain washing?
Also did he learn nothing from meeting Aang, Katara and Sokka?
Kyoshi literally created an island through bending wtf
Also Roku totally destroyed one which while not quite as epic deserves a mention
That one forest spirit that’s mostly a panda deserves an honourable mention because I loved them and also their reaction to that rude monkey spirit in the spirit world was great
The face stealer spirit creeped me out i hope we don’t see them again
I cried when Aang went back to the Air Temple and found Gyatsu (sp?) dead
Also I love the fact that you can so clearly see that he’s an actual child and he totally has the whims of an actual 12 year old (please don’t let this change)
Bumie (sp?) was kind of a weird character but I’m so glad at least one of Aang’s friends are still alive
Zuko keeps levelling up and unlocking new achievements that are probably less than helpful (sympathy for other travellers! Soft spot for young children! Charity! Not attacking first! Growth!)
Also I love his and Iroh’s relationship they really deserve better living family members
All of the animals in the show are just all around amazing! And mostly super adorable
Can the avatar bend multiple elements at once? Or does he just switch between them
Azula getting two non-benders as her backup and them repeatedly wiping the floor with benders is amazing
Also they appear to be scared of her and I predict that at some point that will bite her
Mai (sp?) and Tai Li (sp?) are amazing and is it just me or are they more loyal to each other than Azula
What is up with the lightning throwing? Is that like an elite fire bending thing? Will Zuko learn it?
Also Iroh learning how to redirect lightning is itself badass
I don’t think he’s ever properly been involved in a battle with his bending yet and I’m looking forward to that because he’s already a badass without it (Dragon of the West)
I’m not going to talk about his son because it makes me sad but Iroh really is the best
How old were Kyoshi and Roku? Because they mention on the island that Kyoshi was born there 400 years ago and if each avatar is born when the previous one dies and Aang was in the ice for a hundred years then she and Roku had to be about 150 years old each? Do Avatars just have longer lifespans?
Sokka and Katara are peak sibling energy
They should all listen to Sokka more - he’s usually right
Also poor Sokka who trades with Katara for who has to be the Adult present all the time
Are the Kyoshi warriors coming back because I loved them
That one episode with the Northern Air Temple where it was being destroyed by the people who moved in really made my skin crawl and did not give off good vibes - I honestly felt like they’d desecrated it
Are we ever going to meet Sokka and Katara’s dad?
I’m very proud of the progress Zuko is making but I feel like he’s going to backslide at some point because that boy is weak for family
The White Lotus people keep coming up so I feel like that’s going to be significant at some point
Also there are several cool tricks/objects that have come up and never been referred to again - is this foreshadowing or the writers forgetting about that one thing they wrote?
Excited to see Aang learn firebending properly
Is that one big circle with a smaller one inside it on the map Ba Sing Se? Have I just been missing that glaringly obvious fact this whole time?
Will they ever meet the Earth King?
Are we going to see Bumie again because he was weird but kind of awesome
Did the Dai Lee (sp?) give everybody the creeps or just me?
Is that Blue Mask thing that Zuko used ever going to come up again?
Very worried that Book 2 is going to end up with Azula winning somehow since she seems to be scarily competent
I don’t understand why people can’t bend metal when its made of earth?
Also the human body is like 70% water why does that never come up?
Theoretically you could stop both fire- and air benders by reducing the amount of air available since both of them need it to bend
Although fire bending also involves a lot of breathing so I guess theoretically as long as the bender can breathe neither air nor fire are going to be problematic
Why does Aang never seem to be cold?
Everything is colour coded - why does no one in-world seem to see this as something easily exploited?
Would like to meet more spirits
That’s kind of it but this actually got really long because I had a lot more thoughts than I was expecting
