uhh, it's a jewish symbol. it would be like if you wore any other religious or ethnic symbol as someone who's not a member of that religion/ethnicity.

like imagine randomly wearing a cross as an atheist, sure it's a bad example cuz a lot of people do that for the aesthetic, but still you'd get confused for a Christian.

a Magen David isn't a political symbol, it's not a sign of allyship, it's a Jewish symbol. at least that's my opinion.

Working on my new zine and prints that I make about the jewish heritage of the SchUM region. this acronym stands for Speyer, Worms and Mainz, three important jewish communities of the medival times, this places were basically the cradle of ashkenazic judaism as we know today (check for example the Takkanot Schum or the Chassidei Ashkenaz).

In the project I take the symbols I found in these cities and use an old, historical photograpy technique called cyanotype (or blue/sun-print) to create the prints.

This lion was found on a floor tile from the women’s prayer hall in Speyer. This building was added to the already existing synagogue in the mid 13th century, its floor tiles had a variety of motifs. A similar lion motif on a floor tile dating back to the same period, has been found also in Mainz, in the Dome area.

its a completely fair question since the state of israel has very purposefully used it as a symbol of zionism and also we have so many instances of the idf or settlers purposefully antagonizing people with it. theyre ethnic supremacists and theyre using it as a symbol of ethnic supremacy. i agree that i think its hard to disentangle that given the pointed attempts they make to keep entangling it. also, just cause this may be interesting background to you, the star of david is not actually an ancient jewish symbol. it only acquired its association with judaism over time, the menorah is the symbol youll see in ancient things and was the symbol of judaism for a while. the star of david first came to be a jewish symbol in medieval central european jewish communities, and gershom scholem argues that it was meant to imitate christianity. it also was purposefully chosen by zionists in 19th century as a non religious symbol of jews as opposed to the menorah. i live in the us, jewish life here developed from european jewish immigrants far before israel even existed, so the uses of the star of david reflects a jewish history that is not identical with zionism, but in the past decades has been unfortunately very tied to it. the blue magen david especially i think is zionist. i dont blame people in countries (for example in lebanon) who've been having israel attack them for decades and have palestinian refugee populations for disliking it quite honestly though. it reflects an unfortunate reality. we need to get jewish organizations and institutions around the world to stop unilaterally throwing their support behind israel, instead of just trying to tell people that judaism and zionism arent equivalent, when our institutions and the state of israel are basically claiming the opposite
