The degree to which i see some people bend over backwards to excuse or justify or change or solve Geto’s character is honestly astounding. Just own it up. This man commited atrocities enough for a death sentence. Accept it. Its fine it adds flavour.

The phrase “there arent good or bad people, just the choices they make” is right HERE. Geto and Gojo have a great dichotomy and a big part of it is the fact that in person Geto is the good guy and Gojo is the unbearable asshole. In contrast to that, Gojo is one making the typically “good” choices ant Geto makes “evil” choices. Gojo will save you but will piss you off in the process. Geto will kill you with the kindest smile on his face. I sure hope we dont need to have a conversation on why genocide is a bad thing

I knew something was UP when the only film that helped Yuuji control his flow of cursed energy was the Lord of the Rings. Our boy Yuuji is TRULY a hobbit at heart. Chapter 265 spoilers ahead, but I'll put it under the cut.

It was back in season 1 when Gojo had Yuuji watch a variety of movies to teach him control of cursed energy regardless of the emotions evoked by the films. Gojo refuted Yuuji's idea that anger and other strong negative emotions are the only source of a strong cursed energy.

With that in mind, I don't think it's random that LotR is the one shown to us that helped Yuuji gain mastery over his cursed energy flow. Sure, Yuuji might've controlled it before watching other movies, but it feels as if it's on purpose that it's LotR, especially that scene at the river where Frodo tried to take the burden of destroying the ring on his own, fully aware of the dangerous journey ahead. But Sam didn't let him and willingly followed him, even if it would cost him his life.

Maybe, just maybe, Yuuji learned to control his cursed energy because he saw himself in Frodo. Yuuji looked so engrossed in the film as if he was feeling it—as if he was Frodo who, just like him, bears great evil within him. Not only that, but Yuuji saw in Frodo's eyes the same crushing weight of responsibility and isolation such an evilness entails. It was as if he's looking in the mirror. But Frodo wasn't alone. He had Sam and the others in the Fellowship who are also willing to lighten the burden he carries. And I think that's what got to Yuuji.

And I don't know if it's just me reading too much into things but Yuuji is at his best when he feels anchored by his friends' support or when they're relying on him, like that time when Yuuji held down the cursed spirit at the detention center to buy Megumi time to save Nobara and escape; when Yuuji and Todo almost defeated Hanami, and my favorite, when Nobara nailed down Mahito's double during Shibuya arc:

As corny as this sounds, Yuuji managed to pull himself from Nanamin's death and attack Mahito because he felt Nobara's presence, which encouraged him to continue fighting. Even if the sorcerers were scattered that time and most were left to fend for themselves, Yuuji didn't feel alone. This was the one thing Geto needed the most when he was spiraling down.

Yuuji reminds me so much of Frodo: Yuuji the vessel of the evilest sorcerer in history and Frodo the Ring bearer. But before that, they were nobodies living a simple life, which they treasure and work hard to keep. They're not ambitious and are satisfied being surrounded by their loved ones. They're the ones we least expect to defeat the evilest entities since they're surrounded by the strongest warriors/sorcerers, who could not defeat the said evilest entities. Yuuji, like Frodo, does not belong to the kind of world he got thrown into, and this is made pretty obvious in the recent chapter.

Throughout the many months Yuji had been with various sorcerers and curse users, his principles and worldview got blurry. He started to assimilate their ideas, which didn't feel like him to be honest. From ideas of having a specific role in life and fulfilling it, wanting to give people a good death, and having a cog mentality to being the same as Mahito and becoming a monster to defeat another monster. That's not him. That's never him. And Yuuji realized that too, and I love seeing him change his perspective into that which feels more like him.

Yuuji never liked fighting others. He may have been blessed with physical prowess that might've been on par with Nanamin, but he never wanted to use it. Heck, Yuuji joined an occult club instead of becoming an athlete. What's important to him are the memories you make with yourself and with your loved ones—choosing to do things, even mundane ones, that bring you and others joy because that's what life is all about.

To Yuuji, there's nothing wrong if you lead a simple life doing things as mundane as walking your dog, sleeping, taking a shit, writing this meta, and existing. Living day to day is already hard as it is. Yuuji wants Sukuna (and us) to know that your worth to live and be loved and respected doesn't depend on the grand dreams you have, how far you've come in life, how powerful and strong you've become, how useful you are. Your worth to live is inherent to you, and no one's going to change that, not Sukuna or anybody else. And Yuuji's not gonna stand idly by and watch the likes of him trample on people's lives. They don't get to choose who's worthy to live and kill those who don't.

I read somewhere that Gege thinks Yuuji having no ambition, unlike Naruto wanting to be a Hokage or Luffy aiming to become a Pirate King, is the story's weak point. But I disagree. That's what makes Yuuji so unique and refreshing to watch as he develops. He may not be as ambitious as other shonen heroes, but he does have a strong moral compass, even as young as 15. It may not be obvious, but Yuuji is introspective, observant, and most of all he has this childlike love for life that the other characters have lost due to the nature of their jobs.

Back to the LotR reference—as much as similar Yuuji is to Frodo—when Sukuna switched to Megumi, Yuuji started to feel more like Sam and Megumi Frodo. No matter what happens, even if it would cost him his life, Yuuji's never gonna leave Megumi alone in despair. Megumi has become weak in mind and spirit that he's possibly on the verge of giving everything up. Still, Yuuji's not going to give up on him. He will destroy Sukuna and carry Megumi back home.

In the end, if Yuuji survives, all I could ever think of is his eyes full of insurmountable despair and mourning over the lives of the people he loved and lost. There's no going back after this. I can only hope that after the end of this story, Yuuji could still find a way to rest—be with a person or in a place—if there is anyone or anything left at all.

From the person who brought you unhinged JJK S2 fish discourse, please accept my humble new offering: me holding up images whilst screaming ferally at you: did ya see?! did ya see what they did with the colour symbolism in episode 4 and what it Means?! Well dw cause I'm here to serve you a heinously long meta-analysis regardless. This episode has completely undone me and I need to give you a blow by blow account of why

I want to go in depth about the final scene of e4 bc that's really what set the cogs whirring in my mind, but let's start with the following image bc it exemplifies everything, not just in terms of the colour symbolism but of the heartbreaking changing relationship of stsg

Throughout the previous episodes and opening/credits of S2 we have been made to associate the colour blue + lightness with Gojo and the colour red + darkness with Geto. The sparkling blue eyes and stark white hair of Gojo, his Limitless: Blue technique, the white fish, the way he is often shown standing/walking in the light, turned to face Geto versus the black hair + dark eyes of Geto, the black fish, shown standing/walking in the shadows, turned away from Gojo (etc etc)

Yet the final scene of e4 flips this on its head and what this Means is, quite frankly, soul destroying

We join Geto as he walks along a dark, narrow corridor flooded with red light until he reaches heavy doors. He's confronted with his own image, reflecting back at him, before using both hands to prise open the door. When he steps into the bright white light of a high-ceilinged room, his face falls as Gojo emerges like a messianic figure from the applauding crowd, carrying the shrouded corpse of Riko (side note: god I have a lot of thoughts on Gojo as a messianic figure but I'll save that for another time)

Gojo approaches Geto with his head bowed (whereas usually he is always looking up at Geto) and the moment Geto lays eyes on Gojo he knows something is wrong (similarly to Toji earlier in the episode). He barely seems to recognise Gojo and though Gojo's eyes still sparkle with their bright blue infinity, his expression is dull and lifeless. Geto asks disbelievingly in a way that stabs me right through the heart: "Satoru. Is that you?"

At the start of the conversation, the camera pans from Gojo on the left to Geto on the right and is shot from below in a way that emphasises the growing cavernous expanse between them

But it's what happens in the following moments that's really the killer

Gojo states that he fucked up and that everything that has happened is therefore his fault. Geto tells Gojo "let's head back" (I read this both as: let's head back home and as an indication that Geto wants things to go back to how they were). The camera then cuts to Gojo's mouth as he asks flatly - "Suguru, should we kill these guys?" - and then zooms out as he continues - "The way I feel right now, I doubt I'd feel anything about it." The camera zooms out, showing Gojo standing in front of the applauding crowd, holding Riko's body and continues to draw back, making Gojo seem as if he's getting further and further away from Geto, as well as from us, whilst his eyes glow ethereally

I want to do a separate post about what happens with Geto, Gojo + their relationship in episode 5 but I do also want to point out here: this is the scene that Geto experiences invasive flashbacks of in the following ep. It's the moment that he realizes that he's lost Gojo, that Gojo is now fundamentally different in a way that Geto doesn't recognise or understand, that Gojo is far beyond his reach

As Gojo walks past a motionless Geto, away from the light and into the darkness, we cut to Geto's downcast eyes, pupils dilating wildly as though he's in shock/about to cry (this harkens back to the fish, the way that Geto can no longer bear to look at the white fish as it swims past). We are then left with Geto standing in the bright blue-white light telling Gojo that there's "no point" in killing them, whilst Gojo replies in the darkened, red corridor "does there really need to be any point to it?"

Gojo is a broken man, a complete shell of who he once was and this scene demonstrates Gojo's transition as he turns away from Geto. The colour symbolism, though, is present throughout the earlier parts of the episode and beautifully illustrates how we arrive at this exact moment (as well lays the foundations for what comes next)

Let's return to our blue/red colour theory bc there's a lot going on here during this episode!

E4 starts on a banger: we're cruelly given a recap of Toji telling Geto that he killed Gojo and then within the space of about 7 minutes, Geto too has been killed. It's tragic and sad and none of us want to be reminded of it but I'm going to (srysrysry) because hey, check out what's going on. Notice the cool blue tint of Geto's "death" versus the vivid red of Gojo's? (a horrible eg I know but you should've heard my scream when I caught onto it)

And here's another cool example that had me ajdjsksjdk bc ofc I clocked Gojo using his red technique, but look at the blue glow around Geto's hand?! I don't recall seeing it being used for Geto before (correct me if I'm wrong) so it's interesting to see it being used here, plus us seeing Gojo using Red properly for the first time

Let's just pause here for a moment bc this is a hugely important moment for Gojo's character arc and the fight with Toji gives us an incredible colour theory moment

In the previous episodes, we've seen Gojo being able to easily use his Limitless Blue technique but remember how, in E2 Gojo tried to use Red and hilariously fucks it up announcing "I failed" and resorts to punching the bad guy instead? It isn't until this episode, after Gojo has used reverse cursed technique whilst on the verge of death to heal himself (idk if heal is the right word) that he is able to learn to use Cursed Technique Reversal: Red

We have this really beautiful animation sequence during Gojo's fight with Toji. A blue and a red droplet swirl around each other and then splash together to reveal a swirling rotation of blue and red rippling water. The colours converge, red droplet slipping into blue water, blue droplet into red. The droplets come together to form the shining purple infinity plucked between Gojo's fingers, granting him the "Hollow Purple" technique that allows him to blow a hole through Toji.

Gojo explains:

"Reverse cursed technique uses negative energy. While it can enhance the body, it can't regenerate it. Multiply that negative energy against itself to create positive energy... Take the amplified and the reversal, then smash together those two different expressions of infinity to create and push out imaginary mass."

Gojo + Geto, amplified + reversal = two different expressions of infinity -> create / push out

Toji "killing" Gojo was the moment that set Gojo on a different path, which allowed him to evolve beyond belief and causes him to ascend to, what he believes is, divinity. He takes the basics of Blue and Red (primary colours; Gojo and Geto) and mixes them together to create something new, something transcendent, something that surpasses who he (and Geto) were before. He becomes an unstoppable power that far surpasses everyone else, and this is what Geto recognizes: that Gojo has evolved without him (which we know from E5 has huge consequences for Geto's thinking)

And so now, finally, let us return to Geto at the end of E4

After Gojo asks Geto "does there really need to be any point to it?" (killing), the camera flashes quickly between the applauding audience and Geto's empty hand, which he then clenches into a tight fist. He raises his downcast eyes to look forwards (resolutely, looking into the future) and responds: "it's very important there is..."

We're left with the image of Gojo standing on a blue floor, surrounded by the clapping crowd. The floor wavers as an all consuming darkness pulses beneath him, locating Geto as it's central point as it surges out towards the crowd "...especially for a jujutsu sorcerer."

We're reminded of the conversation where Geto and Gojo almost come to blows whilst playing basketball in E1. Geto's argument that jujutsu sorcerers exist to protect non-jujutsu sorcerers whilst Gojo complains about having to protect "the weak" + patronisingly tells Geto to get off of his moral high horse.

Now we witness the extent of Gojo's apathy in action, as he pulls away from everything and everyone, and the swinging of Geto's moral compass from protection to genocide as he's left behind in the ruins of all that once was, of everything and everyone that he loved

tldr: geto ain't all that /j. he (may) actually never had his shit straight, gathered, and set as many thought he did (incl gojo). u can skip to the conclusion cuz this is way 2 long

i have the idea of geto being set on his goals drilled into my head so much that I forget how vulnerable he really is. he isn't really as “i've already decided and I won't stop at anything to pursue it” as I remember him to be 

like, I already know that geto's goals aren't solely for his personal gain or interests, he's not as selfish/cold-hearted as he might come off. he wanted to create a world where it's easier to live as sorcerers .... and it's not just bc he was almost killed by a nonsorcerer (toji) for a greedy reason and doesn't want it to happen to him again ... but he also had his friends and colleagues in mind—he doesn't want to see another innocent kid who had a shot at living the way she desired be killed again, he doesn't want gojo to be a tool anymore, he doesn't want to have piles of other sorcerers’ (his colleagues!!) bodies to be at the end. and mind you, when he decided to abandon everything he had, he was a teenager that saw too much as was spiraling out of control. he wasn't fully mature when he made his decision 

and if u maybe squint, u can see hints of regret in his decision... maybe uncertainty or just not wanting to pursue it as much as we're all led to believe. he was away for 10 years... that's a lot of time, what exactly did he do? he was running a cult and gathering curses for his grand plan of ridding the world of nonsorcerers. but in those years, he never posed any serious threat to the jujutsu world or nonsorcerers despite his already powerful technique ,, not until his declaration of war at least. but even then, it wasn't even like he was guaranteed to win bc of how strong he's gotten... he declared that war knowing he had a good chance of losing, it was half-assed (lack of a better term). and when he did lose, he didn't bother to run away. he let gojo get to him, he let himself to die in his hands

all that to say, maybe geto didn't know what he was doing exactly—he wasn't as sure about his end goal, where he was going exactly, how he was going to do it and whatnot. it feels like he just decided on something without as much thought as he should've and is bound to that decision and felt inclined to just... keep going. dare I say, the whole thing was to give himself a new purpose. your whole life being you're a tool, a thing with an innate purpose to fulfil, isn't very pleasant to realize isn't it? (would like to add: purpose/value of life is explored multiple times in jjk). so maybe he wanted to take control of his life back by steering his goal from the one instilled to him as a sorcerer to one that he decided for himself. 

his lack of actual, impactful violence is telling of this. he was shaken up by the events that stacked onto him that it caused a decision to be made when it's heaviness fell on him. he had a crisis n felt like he needed to get a hold of himself, his ideals/morals were slipping away and he needed to grasp it again, somehow. it's not actually as grounded as I remember, it's not as set in his mind as we think. it seems otherwise by the way he seems accustomed to his new life, how untroubled he looks when we see him in jjk0, how fulfilled he is with how it's going. he has new acquaintances, a family, a goal which he won't stop at anything to reach. but we dont see what's behind that... we don't see how he feels through all this, how relieved he might've been to have gojo kill him finally. 

sorry for being so redundant lol I'm blabbering. but basically, geto may seem like he laid a clear path towards a goal bc of how confident he left everything the day of the KFC breakup, but he's actually unstable and unsure as hell. he stalled a LOT on doing actual impact and taking BIG steps to reach his goal. deep inside, he actually doesn't wanna go down that path, he just said he will to have a hold of himself, his ideals, his purpose.

but what do I know? I haven't rewatched jjk0 yet and I'm not done rereading the entire manga so… I don't trust my memory that much. might've remembered some things wrong or forgot a detail so ..  feel free to point that out !!! as always, discussion is always appreciated :3

Hi i have a thought but do you think that gege had some sort of story set up between utahime and gojo well not as a ship (i would still ship them regardless with my delulu self but anyways) idk how to express it, i am sorry , but the way their nuanced dynamic was portrayed intially in s1 of anime or exchange event in the manga made it seem that there's sorta a deeper bond and it seem that gege scratched that idea off or something idk only gege knows lol Honestly it's wasted potential...

Same here anon, same here 😩 I actually did ask linkspooky, our resident jjk analysis writer, a similar question once, and to summarize, aside from Gojo and Utahime’s nuanced dynamic, there are glaring similarities of Utahime and Geto in how they foil Gojo, and it got me thinking if there’s more for future Utahime roles, considering Geto got his time to shine earlier JJK and his big role towards Gojo. Linkspooky even agrees that Gege seems to be building up something for Gojo and Utahime (but imo looking at it now with the current state of the manga, it seems doubtful). She furthers highlight how Uta got the strong potential to connect with Gojo if only he lets her in. I guess that’s the possible “deeper bond” that you are talking about, anon. And honestly, her response to my question really got me thinking that maybeeeee Gege HAD a plan? He’s fast pacing in JJK definitely made him scrap ideas (like that one part from vol 23 leaks where Maki was supposedly gonna go undercover within the US military invading the colonies but like that fever dream of a subplot just…disappeared). "So for Geto it's mostly that I don't like villains with a bigoted ideology and he's too incompetent to even fall in the "love to hate" category. Really, the worst thing a villain can be is incompetent and Geto in Vol 0 is barely better than your average disney villain. Doesn't help that he never gets pushback on his ideals. Gojo tells him in Premature Death that killing people is bad, but that's it. He spouts his bullshit about how genocide is totally necessary and Yuuta stands there like "idk you might be right, but you want to kill people I care about and that's the real crime here". Nobody really engages with his ideology except Yuki I guess, but that was before he became an antagonist. I could forgive that to a degree if he was at least a real threat, but he isn't.....You don't get any of that with Geto, he's not even fun to hate because he barely provides any pushback. His descent into embracing the superiority of sorcerers and resolving to kill all non-sorcerers was well written, but I don't feel for him at all. Thanks so much for your JJK posts (especially about Getou and Gojo), love to read them....

When it came to Geto (and SatoSugu), I think the biggest difference between me and most other JJK fans is that I start from doujin, headcanons, and fan analysis about them before I started consuming the canon materials.

I have friends who are avid shippers of those two and regularly shared their contents. Plus, I got commissioned to write their fic, which required me to research their dynamics and canon details.

So you can say I went into JJK after already knowing full well what to expect, why this is like this, why that is like that. Perhaps this is the reason why I can feel so much about Geto because I already read everything there is to know about him, from his "golden days" with Gojo to his descend into villainy and his death.

Despite all my screaming and fangirling about JJK (and SatoSugu in particular), I actually have a lot of personal complaints about Jujutsu Kaisen itself as a whole, particularly from the story-telling aspect — which is why despite not agreeing with that post you saw, I can kind of understand where they are coming from.

To be honest, when I read the manga, I feel like the story-telling is rather all over the place. You have all of these flashbacks featuring this and that character, but as the story progresses, not all of these characters get the spotlight you think they will get after all of those focus they're getting in the flashback. And you end up not understanding "so wtf were those for?"

Even Gojo's high school flashbacks come abruptly out of the blue. You press that "next chapter" button and suddenly the flashback started out of nowhere.

So you can imagine my feeling when actually reading the manga. I was like "...huh? that's it? the doujin I read was more intense than that."

(in which case, I'm super thankful to the anime staff for including more contents and crumbs about SatoSugu's relationship)

Speaking from personal experience, there have been many times when I fall in love with a character not because of what I see in canon, but because the many interpretations and contents in the fandom through fanart, fan comic, headcanon, analysis, and fics.

Like with Choso, for example. I like him a normal amount but after seeing so many cute and funny fanarts of him being a bro-con to Yuji, he becomes one of the characters I love the most now because of how precious he is in those fanarts and comics.

When you're reading or watching something by yourself, there may be things you miss, things that you only start to pay attention to after you saw other people talking about it. Likewise, there may be things that you realize but other people don't.

For example, the foreshadowing in the anime where they always put Gojo and Shoko in the light and Geto in the shadows, hinting at his eventual descent into the dark path and separating him from his friends.

I think my experience with Geto and SatoSugu is exactly like this.

I already saw fanarts and doujins about his tragic fate. I already saw both his happy and sad days up until the moment of his death. I came into the canon material with a certain level of understanding and expectations about the character, so when he did something in canon, I was like "yeah, no wonder he did that, because previously he went through this and that."

And because of that, I am willing to look deeper into him, to analyze details about him. Because he is already that dear to me from the beginning, I don't have it in me to turn and hate him for what he did.

But of course, we are all different from one another, including when it comes to interpreting a story.

Maybe the person who posted that only consumed canon material, and maybe Geto as a character is simply not to their liking, who knows? I'm not going to say their opinion is wrong because mine isn't guaranteed to be right either. When expressing out review/opinion about a story or character, we can never discard our personal preference and bias, no matter how objective we try to be, and that's okay.

8. The most underrated character?

My dumbass typed an answer that fits 13 smh. Someone ask me that, I'm ready.

Obviously Megumi, because he beat severe depression with sheer gay audacity. Amazing. (that's a horrible summary but you get it).

But also Choso! I fear his the flaw he was unable to grow past was the compulsive need to sacrifice himself for Yuuji, to feel that he was worth living with. In his case I think the conditions that led to his existence rly weighed on his self-image, but this isn't the post for sad analysis this should be fun.

Damn I rly said the emos are underrated, huh.

I'm going to add Hanami bc they had their own domain expansion and we never got to see it. Idk if they were stronger than Dagon, but god, I'm still sad about.

there’s def a lot of areas where there could be more lore (rika’s character page is so odd??) just because of how many characters there are i think!! but i do feel like the story is wrapping up so some things might just be left as questions. or not, who knows!!

yeah there’s def a cycle of like thing gets popular -> everyone loves it -> it becomes so over saturated that people start hating on it to be different -> it becomes overhated -> in a few years everyone realizes it wasn’t that bad. the biggest problem w the “hating as a trend” is that it takes away from legitimate criticisms of the work, as fans will lump it into general hating for no reason.

besides just analyses being so important for even basic comprehension of the plot, i’ve noticed a lot of the storyline is dependent on random interviews gege has done. like nobara’s death only being confirmed because of an interview years after it was written is RIDICULOUS to me (even though i already thought she was dead tbh but there was enough speculation in the fandom that it obviously wasn’t clear enough in-story). things like interviews and character pages should give you fun additional information that can help you expand on a character (oh rin likes horror games!! karasu is scared of the water!! etc etc) but it shouldn’t be the MAIN source of KEY info on a character. idk i think a lot of people love what jjk could be at this point and not necessarily what it is.

YESS i honestly was not super pleased by the female characters in jjk!! they are cool, and they COULD be well written, but they aren’t. i think in terms of its contemporaries, demon slayer does female characters better than jjk (again, not saying they’re perfect because they aren’t, but, say, shinobu is a stronger character to me than even maki).

I just love Killua and Kakashi more. Honestly; it kind of seems like Geje might have been inspired by [both] Killua and Kakashi in making Gojo, but didn't completely understand what made both the characters and why people [actually] love them), so I was curious about ur thoughts on that, as someone who knows both HxH and JJK well.

It helped Killua, because Killua turns his suffering into other things, like strength, and all the abuse, manipulation, torture, etc.; has messed him up so much mentally. There is a reason he can be so insecure and has basically no to negative self-worth. And/or etc.

I am sorry, I love all the Zoldycks, but people really do try to excuse the abuse Killua has gone through, but saying it "isn't that bad", or "it helped him", or that "they still love each other" (people can still love each other, and people awful and abusive and/or etc. And a lot of the love Killua gets is shown to be unhealthy, abusive, manipulative, selfish, twisted, etc. People like Alluka/Nanika, some of the butlers and assistant butlers like Gotoh and Canary, and/or etc. show more healthy love for Killua compared to most of his family; a fair amount of the time. Which is both sad, and nice. Basically, the Zoldycks can love each other. But they do it, a fair amount of the time, in weird, messed up Zoldyck ways), and/or etc.

And I am just like, "what"? Idk, HxH fans can sometimes be very hard when in some things. Like trying to act like the older Zoldycks aren't that bad or that Killua (and the other Zoldyck kids) haven't been abused, tortured, neglected, locked away (Alluka/Nanika), chained up, manipulated, etc. It is weird sometimes).

As to characters being misunderstood... I think there's a lot of projection in fandom in general. Projection and/or white washing for image building reasons.

And I'm generally okay with it. Like my personal opinion is very "you do you", when it comes to fandom. I will woobify a villain for my fics because I want to make myself feel better with a nicer dynamic, I'm not good at writing full angst with no happy ending or whatever. And I don't expect everyone to like it. And this way I give myself the right to click out of fics when the characterisation irks me.

But I won't lie that it's annoying when it spills into meta. Especially when fanon is treated like canon and it's much more popular and pervasive than canon. When I write meta about the same villain I do my utmost not to make them seem better than they are.

And I totally agree that both Killua and Gon are very misrepresented in canon. People are trying to bring them to a small set of simple characteristics when they both are very layered characters.

The takes that the abuse helped Killua are mind boggling honestly. These really buy into the point of view of the abusers. In the world of HxH there are normies who live normal lives never knowing of nen or other super powers. They live chill lives unless some super powered, entitled assholes stomp on them. Regardless of what potential Killua was born with, he could've just lived a normal life. The people who decided he wouldn't have that were his family. They decided he needs powers to succeeded them in their violent job, whether he wants it or not. And he does not want that. Yes, Killua is proud of his strength and what he and his family can do, but he was brought up to value this kind of shit. Contrast him with Mito who doesn't value such stuff in the slightest. It's a learned way of thinking.

If Killua had a normal family, he could've developed his skills more organically, if he had wanted to lean into his potential. The abuse only helps he survive in the life he was forced to. Because even though he leaves the assassin life, he's now a hunter. And he becomes a hunter because he was already brought up into a world outside the norm, a world in which it's feasible to become a hunter. Contrary to the 4 other characters, even to Hisoka, Killua doesn't have anything he really wants to hunt. He says that he could hunt criminals during the exam, but it's not something he cares about. He never tries to make it his life.

Both Gon and Killua have very high emotional intelligence, though not the same way. But I really like it about them, that they are different but on par. And they aren't complete opposites. Gon's better at acting on his emotional intelligence. Killua's better on analising people and understanding their motivations.

I also like the Zoldycks as characters, I find their dynamics interesting. And I agree that there are strong emotions between them. Because they truly are a family. But they are a horrible family, one that harms everyone, that forces a way of life and a way of thinking onto all the people trapped in it. (btw there's a poll about toxic fams and the Zoldycks are rightfully winning, please vote for them to help seal their victory).

I wish that people could divorce in their heads liking a character as a part of a story and liking them as a person. And that they could stop conflating liking something with endorsing it. Because this is where the whitewashing of the Zoldycks comes from. People not being able to enjoy them as a fictional family because if they were real there'd be nothing to enjoy. And stop conflating explanations with justifications and excuses. And stop judging each other for what fictional characters and dynamics they enjoy. Because this leads to aggressively replacing canon with fanon.
