Bought an INKR membership to read “Elegant Yokai Apartment Life” and then spent last night crying over Gorou Kanbe’s “Don’t Call Me Daddy.” This is a spin-off/sequel to Kanbe’s “Don’t Call Me Dirty” (also available to read for free if you’re an INKR premium member), which stars earnest and naive Shouji, the only son of a single dad who befriends a local homeless man as he tries to recover from a failed relationship with another man. “Don’t Call Me Daddy” is, unsurprisingly, about Shouji’s dad Ryuuji--but more importantly about Ryuuji’s good friend Hanao, who turns out to have been Shouji’s other father more or less for the first few years of Shouji’s life.
“Don’t Call Me Daddy” fools you with the first chapter into thinking it is about a slice of life “my two daddies” story, but there’s a 20 year (!!) time skip at the end of chapter one. Kanbe is much more interested in these two men in their 50+ year old forms which, yeah, me too. You know from “Don’t Call Me Dirty” that they don’t have wives, but they also don’t have each other, and not for the reasons you might think.Hanao is one of those wonderfully prickly bl oyajis who hides a fragile broken heart under layers and layers of high standards and self-denial -- catnip to both myself as a reader and a flamboyant younger doctor character in the manga named Dr. Haba who I’m surprised does not have his own spinoff. Ryuuji is a character type you’ve seen time and time again in bl, seemingly careless and carefree with a dog-like personality who turns out to see and feel a lot more than he’s letting on. Despite Hanao’s insistence that he’s not part of Ryuuji’s family, together in this short volume they navigate elder care, societal discrimination, raising a son, being sexually active in your later life, loneliness, and what it means to have and keep a family. I’m not claiming that this story is realistic, but it’s also interested in creating a fantastical romance out of ordinary, unromantic circumstances. I laughed, I cried, I went out on my patio hoping to see the moon. I thought about the weight of growing old. And I thought, well, it’s good that these two old men can share it together.

Comics
I have found myself falling down the hole of binging comics on Hoopla.
There's a wide variety of stuff, involving non-humans and/or queer relationships.
◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊
Save Yourself
By Bones Leopard and illustrated by Nichole Matthews, Kelly Matthews
Super cute, queer-filled story about magical girls who are bad guys and the monsters that fight them are, often, the good guys.
The story is about humans realizing the magical girls are evil, after a young woman saves a mysterious stranger from the superheroes.
There is a character death that takes place in the past and a death that happens on screen, but it's not bloody. Victim is just gone.
Art was bright and cheerful. Had a cartoon vibe about it, so nothing explicit or gorey. Again, super cute.
◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊
The Me You Love in the Dark
By Skottie Young and illustrated by Jorge Corona
Definite monster fucker story. It's a horror story with gore and domestic abuse vibes.
An artist rents a creepy house in the Midwest to renew her ability to paint. An being (ghost, I think, but form is more eldritch horror) lives in the house that the artist makes contact with.
◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊
Don't Call Me Dirty and Don't Call Me Daddy
Both stories created and illustrated by Gorou Kanbe
No monsters involved, but is full of gay characters.
Dirty is about a 26-year-old liquor store clerk befriending a houseless man. The clerk is known by those around him as gay and is even in a relationship with another man. Though that man ends up breaking things off with him. The concept of "dirty" is applied to both the clerk and houseless man, one in a homophobic sense and the other in a physical literal sense.
Daddy is actually about the clerk's father and a long-time friend. The long-time friend actually was helping the father raise his son for a time, but felt horrible that his son thought he and the father were married.
Both of these made me cry. Hiding your own feelings from yourself, apologizing to others for who you are, just wanting to be loved, being given kindness of facing cruelty for so long. Just oof.
I highly rec both of these, if you can get over some art issues. (Occasionally, the characters have, like, super tiny hands.)
◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊
The Song of Yoru & Asa
By Harada
Gay relationship, but no monsters.
Oh my goodness, this had very explicit sex scenes. Haha. I was not prepared for that when reading.
This one is about two guys who are in a band together. Asa can be mean at times and Yoru can be pushy about sex. But it just feels more like a dynamic than serious problems.
TW for sex still happening even when one or other tells the other to stop. (They don't seem to mind or have problems with it, but in one instance it does result in pee, so... yeah. I kind of wish they talked about having a safe word so they know for sure to stop.)
Oh, TW for self-harm attempt, as well. There's a stalker fan who pulls out a blade to cut herself with when she's rejected.
Art was really good in this one.
◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊
Kiss Me, Satan!
by Victor Gischler and illustrated by Juan E. Ferreyra
Yes, monsters are involved. No queer people, though. :(
Demon is trying to get back into heaven and is given a mission to help a witch flee the werewolf mafia. Interesting premise, but it falls prey to misogynistic tropes and art.
There's four women characters the demon guy is supposed to be keeping safe. Three of them die. The last one ends up fucking the main guy.
Art is relatively good, if you're into comics with more of a western feel. There are gratuitous shots of ladies' underwear during fights or unnecessary nudity.
Story is intriguing, but I kind of feel it was more of a guy power fantasy. You eventually see the guy's demon form and it's pretty kick ass.
TW for gore, death, and discussions of killing a baby.

This is a long shot but, link me to/share your favourite artists that specialize in middle-aged men, or manga with middle-aged characters as the protags. I’m talking like 40-60. Can be freelancers/fanartists too! Just wanna see everyone’s approaches!
Examples- Don’t Call Me Daddy (Gorou Kanbe),  A Man and His Cat (Umi Sakurai)

My recent browsing on MAGCOMI got me interested in these titles:
Tori Junkies (Bird Junkies) by Sorano Kaili, a manga about, as the title suggests, people who love birds (probably a bit too much…? 😆😅).
Tsukumo no Kamisama (The Spirit of Objects) by Kogarasu Keiko, a historical fantasy about a young man running an antique shop full of tsukumogami and tries to grant their wishes together with a mysterious black-haired man.
Yamagoya nite (At the Lodge) by Kanbe Gorou, a BL manga about a loner who prefers mountaineering solo who meets a troubled big guy (he mistook as a bear) at a mountain lodge and helps him (this one is fairly new and just released ch1 on 15 Nov, with ch2 scheduled this 15 Dec).
They all release a new chapter on the 15th of the month, though so far it seems only Yamagoya nite updates monthly (the other two seem to have an indefinite release period, and according to MU, Tsukumo no Kamisama is already complete).

High schooler Ryo knows he’s transgender, but he doesn’t have anyone to confide in about the confusion he feels. Then, and only then, the world melts away, and he can be his true self. One day, while out shopping, Ryo sees someone he didn’t expect: Jin. The kid who looked so tough in class has the same taste in fashion as him! At last, Ryo has someone he can open up to—and the journey ahead might finally give him a way to express himself to the world.

Like Two Peas in a Pod by Gorou Kanbe
It began with a mistake. When Tanaka and Nakata are given each other’s papers back, they come to a horrible realization... They have almost identical names. And test results. And body types. And taste in fashion. And sports scores. And hobbies. The list goes on, and as annoying as it is, at least they know they always have each other. And maybe, just maybe, their similarities run even deeper.

Released on the 14th of March was the first collected volume of Kanbe Gorou's Daddy Darling
A BL (Boys Love) slice of life, the manga begins with a young lawyer named Hana who one day finds his childhood friend Ryuko (owner of a liquor store) on his doorstep one day with an abandoned baby in his hands
While helping & supporting Ryuko alongside his own family, Hana begins to realise that his feelings towards his friend (and his friend to him) is more than just friendship and, worrying about how it would affect their image in public, Hana breaks all ties and deserts them
Twenty years later, the two men meet again, and those old feelings begin to stir once more...

Book Review: Like Two Peas in a Pod by Gorou Kanbe
Release Date: June 8, 2021
This was so sweet and angsty. *rubs it all over my body* The story was so simple. Two guys: Tanaka and Nataka are given each other's papers and they start to realize that they have ALOT in common which leads to them hanging out. And then one Tanaka gets a girlfriend and the other starts to realize he has feelings for him. Thus follows some angst, oblivious object of affection says stupid stuff and upsets the other, and just cute moments that made me feel so bad for poor Nataka. I could read this fifty times and not get tired of it. And the lack of anything other than kisses didn't bother me. The story itself was just so great. Thank you to NetGalley and Tokyopop for giving this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
