Notes: Originally arranged as stage music for Flounder Heights back in February, before I realized the vibes were too off. The joke at first was that the original, antediluvian "amen break" drum loop somehow survived the destruction of Alterna and gained quasi-religious significance. If you listen really, really closely, you can hear ambient noise to that effect, as though someone recorded the sample off their laptop at the twilight of humanity.

And then Side Order happened, and with it came "CΘld StΘrage" and its blistering breakbeats, and everything was forever ruined. Unless you wish to entertain the notion that the Pinging Marciale is worthy of worship, and really, who WOULDN'T think that? Just look at it!

Synopsis: In the bustling, people-filled city of Tokyo, Kasai Ryoji leads a quiet, solitary life, keeping his emotions hidden behind a stone-cold exterior. However, his world is turned on its axis when he is paired with a new roommate—Sato Kaiyo, a beam of positivity and cheerfulness, always brimming with enthusiasm and optimism. Slowly but surely, the walls around Ryoji's heart begin to crumble, allowing Kaiyo to enter his world and show him life from a completely different perspective: life through the eyes of someone who refuses to let darkness cloud their view.

Notes: This is my main wip, and it’s pretty different from what I usually write—I try to stray away from slice-of-life romance stories, but when I first came up with this idea, I was really passionate about it and decided to go through with the story on an impulse. So if it’s not good, or seems rushed at times, well damn 😐 I don’t know what to say besides that. But if you’re interested in going on this ride with me, then I hope you like it!!

Let's dive into some trivia for Cutie Honey episode three: "Traps Set By the Red Axe."

Natsuko is pretending to practice zazen, a type of sitting meditation. It originates from the teachings of Buddha, and is meant to give insight into your true nature of being.

There’s a poster of singer Tom Jones hanging up in the teacher’s lounge. The “poster” is actually the Japanese vinyl cover of Tom Jones: Live in Las Vegas.

The shop featured in this episode, "Tihenny Jewelers", is a parody of the renowned real-life jewelry brand, Tiffany & Co. or Tiffany’s from New York City. Tiffany’s opened their first Japanese store in October 1972, a whole year before Cutie Honey premiered. This momentous event likely served as inspiration for this episode.

Although never addressed within the episode, production materials reveal Tomahawk Panther’s human alias is “Lydia.”

The shot of Seiji screaming the English word “help” is lifted straight from Casino Royale, the 1967 film adaptation of the first James Bond novel. In the film the character Evelyn Tremble (played by Peter Sellers, best known for playing Chief Inspector Clouseau in the Pink Panther films) is tortured by experiencing a series of psychedelic hallucinations. At one point he sees himself walking alongside a marching band while the word “help” is animated flying out of his mouth.

My own rough, tentative translation follows:

El Desperado once claimed that he himself wasn't the kind of wrestler to bask in sentimentality, for, as Jun Kasai had said, wrestlers live in the now. (It is possible to dispute both the veracity of Despe's claim -- which I will for anyone who asks -- and the exact interpretation of both claims, but that is beyond the scope of this answer.) The reason I reference the quote is that I find it hints at something core to my experience of being a wrestling fan. Due to the perpetual nature of the narrative, the fact that it progresses in real time, and the fact that the art is performed by real people who age and grow, there isn't a reset button. Things do not regress to the status quo at the end of the episode, as in an old sitcom. What was sacred yesterday is gone tomorrow, and in the now one frequently finds oneself standing in a demolition zone. The Doozers build their cities of radish sticks, the Fraggles come along and have a snack, and the Doozers have room to build some more. As someone with pretty severe time blindness, it truly resonates with how I experience the world in general. A Moose lives in the now. But I am a deeply sentimental Moose. As a character, Yota Tsuji scares the shit out of me. I like him. He's charismatic, compelling. His wrestling style appeals to me. He's pretty! He has one of the consistently better if not the best tope suicidas I've seen from a heavyweight, and that specific skill always goes a loooong way in gaining my esteem. And when he stands in a room, you can feel the gravity of him and what he means. It's impossible not to fall in line with that.

But what he means very much has the potential to bulldoze things that have been sacred to me since I first began watching wrestling. More than any of the others from his dojo class, he has the moment, means, and (I believe) intention to begin reshaping his faction in his own image. It's not a secret. It's already started. Does this need to happen? Emphatically, yes. Will I be happier once it has? Almost certainly. But Yota Tsuji is powerful. As a narrative force, he has cachet like few members of the roster currently do. And Gedo's going to use it to rip my heart out. So, yeah. Every time he pops onto the screen, I get a frisson of dread -- which my masochistic tendencies immediately convert to lust, because something is a little broken in my brain.
