No one asked, but it was Orihime's birthday and I didn't post anything so I decided I wanted to take a deeper dive into halcyonverse, my pop star au, by talking specifically about Orihime's music and how I envisioned it to be when I was crafting out her character for this fic.

Firstly, I'd like to say that I listened to a lot of Britney Spears and Ariana Grande while writing, to be able to achieve that peppy/bright tone. I also made a playlist of songs that fit Orihime’s vibe as a person. This is not a playlist of her music in my verse, btw, it’s just a playlist of songs that suit her vibe.

Orihime is undoubtedly a pop artist, through and through, but [George Costanza voice] within that basic framework there are many subtle variations.

Her first album, ‘Future Me’ is electropop, which, in my head sounds like if Daft Punk and 'My Everything’ by Ariana Grande had a baby. Other inspirations: BENEE, Utada Hikaru.

Her second album is obviously ‘Hello Halcyon Days.’ She switches out the whole electro, made-for-radio vibe for a more narrative, intimate style of writing à la Taylor Swift (specifically Speak Now/Fearless) but there’s also a few breezy pop hits on there that’s very reminiscent of Honey by Kehlani. Other inspirations: Kacey Musgraves.

‘hhd’ is also the album where she talks a little about her relationship with Uryuu, who is her first serious boyfriend in this universe, and also her first real heartbreak, so there’s definitely some poetic, soul-crushing lines because canon Orihime is a Poet. Lots of acoustic, ballad-y songs interspersed with free-spirited, radio-friendly pop songs.

The next album, which I didn’t get to talk about, is 5+1 which is about, you guessed it, Ichigo! At this point she wrote half the album when she was pining, and the other half when they actually got together, so half of it is very angsty and acoustic, while the other half is peppy and pop-rock. FOUR by One Direction and Love You For A Long Time by Maggie Rogers are big inspirations for this one. This one also has a remix with Megan Thee Stallion and Doja Cat, because that’s what pop girls of this generation do!

Miscellaneous details: Just like her song for Sora, she has a song about Tatsuki and their friendship, and the video is a very Story of My Life-esque montage of pictures of them together while they were growing up, and Tatsuki cried when Orihime first played it for her.

Orihime plays the guitar, but she is also learning the piano + she’s been getting into Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Aerosmith, the Eagles and Arctic Monkeys because of Ichigo so you can definitely expect her next album to have a lot of alternative influences.

In this verse, Masaki is alive, so IchiHime go on double-dates with Isshin/Masaki, and Orihime writes a song about Ichigo looking up to their love, and how she hopes one day their kid might see them that way and it’s Masaki’s favorite song. Isshin’s favorite is the one about cyborgs.

Didn’t the shooting happen after the remix? Which also means T*ry probably recorded way before the song and shooting even came out? So wouldn’t that have not given him time to take him off?

He also said he was pressured/advised to take him off but he didn’t bc everything happened after they had already made the song together but…. That just ain’t a good enough excuse for me

Okay so I actually had this entirely typed up and put a lot of thought into and then tumblr glitched? Like the page halfway reloaded? It didn’t even bring me back to the empty ask, it was just a blank white page? Anyway, I almost cried but let’s give it another go!

Roman Profile: Tucson by Healy (this song and RP are forever tied to one another inside my head and it’s not that the song necessarily inspired anything in the story, it’s more that it feels like it’s theme song???), 1950 by King Princess (the association for this song really comes down to the specific lyric “so cold that your stare’s ‘bout to kill me / I’m surprised when you kiss me / so tell me why my gods look like you”), Painkiller by Ruel (just everything about this song makes me think about this plot line, where it’s been and where it’s headed!)

Rules of the Game: Heartbeat by Childish Gambino (hear you go, here’s the inspiration for the story! fun fact, what would later become ROTG after countless “going back to the drawing board” renditions of the general idea, started with just Daniel calling and asking the reader to fly out, which he convinces her to do not on the merit of his argument but because between his voice and the memories of what happened under the sheets last time she saw him convinced her!), Flowers & Sex by EMELINE & smle (there’s definitely facets of their dynamic that i associate heavily with this song, it just encompassed everything I wanted their relationship to be in the start), No Guidance Remix by Ayzha Nyree (the association here is kind of similar to Flowers & Sex but basically just sounds audibly, the way I write how they fuck... if that makes any sense)

I Mean It: Put Your Records On by Ritt Momney, I know this is a remix/cover of Corinne Bailey Rae’s song, don’t come for me (even before I started writing this one shot, this song has always made me think of Mick so it just seemed like the obvious choice for me to draw some inspiration for the story from the song!) 

How Good of a Favor: Location by Khalid (I couldn’t stop listening to this song while I wrote the first two chapters of this fic, they’ll just always be linked to each other for me)

A Known Entity: Carolina by Harry Styles (to me, this song is the beach scene all neatly wrapped up with a bow on top!), Best on Earth ft. BIA by Russ (helloooo club scene from chapter 2! how are you?)

Creature of Habit: Netflix by G-Eazy (okay this song is back from before G-Eazy fucking rebranded and I miss this era of his music so dearly but that being said, I’ve always loved this song and COH was just the way it took form when I started writing!)

The Ambassador’s Daughter: Kiwi by Harry Styles (this song has always put me directly in mind of the reader of this one shot, who is actually vastly more of a developed character in my notes than she reads on paper and that’s not even getting into the exploits she gets up to in the other story lines I’ve written for her at random)

Mutually Assured Destruction: Let’s Get Lost ft. Devon Baldwin by G-Eazy (okay so while I failed to notice just how many G-Eazy songs had actually managed to find their way onto this list, I associate this one with the one shot for a unqiue reason, that being that the story is loosely based on a personal experience I had at music festival a few years ago, a crucial moment in which happened while this song was being performed in the background)

While The World Was Burning, by Gene

1. Sucks To Be You: This song has really grown on me. I liked it this first time I heard it but I absolutely love it now. I think he has a unique voice. 9/10

2. Switching Sides: This feels like a continuation of track 1. This could be an issue if all the songs have this same beat but we’re only 2 songs in so I won’t jump to conclusions. While the beat sounds the same, I love how the flow is totally different. This shows his versatility. Enjoying this. 8/10

3. Freedom Is Priceless: Different beat; nice! I love songs that keep the same flow from start to finish but I can see another listener getting bored with this track. I feel like they could have done more with the instrumental. The production feels a little flat. 7.5/10

4. Roses Remix: I’m a Future stan so hearing him speak to open the track already excites me. This is a fucking banger! SAINt’s voice is so different. Future is a great addition; his “you already know” adlib is my favorite part. This is the song you take your shirt off at the club for. 9.5/10

5. Monica Lewinsky, Election Year: First of all, poor Monica Lewinsky. She made a mistake as a young lady over 20 years ago and still has to deal with pop culture references that use her name as a synonym for certain sexual acts. The song, on the other hand, is dope. DaBaby killed his part. So far, besides the first 2 songs having similar beats, every song sounds totally different. This is a versatility masterclass so far and I’m truly enjoying it. 9/10

6. High School Reunion, Prom: Shockingly underwhelming! If you showed me the tracklist prior to me listening asked me to rank the songs solely off expectations, this would be in my top 3. It’s my least favorite so far. Uzi rarely misses. This is a letdown. 6.5/10

7. Pray 4 Me: Um...okay so I’m going to remove my Kanye bias and review this song like someone who’s not completely obsessed with Mr. West. Firstly, featuring born-again Kanye on a song called ‘Pray 4 Me’ is too predictable. The song itself is fine; nothing special. I don’t think Kanye adds much to this. I’m not the biggest fan of introspective Kanye. 7/10

8. Smack DVD: Now we’re fucking talking! This is how you use a fucking Kanye Motherfucking West feature. Let’s goooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!! I need to speed on the highway to this. LET’S GOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! “Man you talking about the president, I call the number up. Man you talking about Elon, I call the number up. Man you talking about Kim K, you know you effing up.” Talk your shit Ye! I missed this Kanye so much. He’s still alive. I’m so happy. 10/10

9. Time For Demons: Wow, very brave of SAINt to follow a song featuring Pastor West with a song called ‘Time For Demons.’ Okay I’m calling it now. This guy is going to be BIG!!! This is one of the most impressive albums I’ve heard from a new artist. I’m just more impressed by how different every song sounds and how he sounds like no one else out right now. This guy is really fucking good, man. I’m blown away. 9.5/10

10. Gorgeous: Remember my track 3 review? This is what I meant when I said I love songs that use one flow from start to finish. This isn’t boring because the beat is lively. I love “overspeeding on the highway” music. This is perfect for that. 9/10

11. Quarantine Wifey: Opening the song with a Blac Youngsta clip is already a homerun. “Bitch I’m trying to be the next Kanye.” Let’s go SAINt!!! Is this the best song ever or what?!? I love this guy. I love him. I’m stanning. This is the best album I’ve heard this year. This is an instant classic. The Italian couple at the end are so cute; “very fan!” I love everything about this song. 10/10

12. Ransom: I can’t do this. I can’t. I love this so much. This is perfection. This is an 11/10. This is the best song I’ve ever heard. I want to hear this masterpiece every single day. 6LACK & Kehlani sound beautiful together. Kehlani should do back vocals on every song; angelic voice. 10/10

13. Back On The Ledge: The last 5 songs were out of this world. This bring us back to earth. Not bad but we were on a crazy run that eventually had to slow down. This is a nice way to slow down because it’s a good standalone song. 8/10

14. Roses - Imanbek Remix: This is the first SAINt JHN song I ever heard. Only fitting that it’s the last song on this amazing album. It’s his biggest song today, but I know this won’t be his biggest song when he’s done. I’m very excited to follow his career. He’s going to be very big! I’m happy this review is documented and dated. 9.5/10
