How much of the burden is in the way we watch ourselves?
How much of the burden is in the way we watch ourselves? In the early years of the twenty-first century, everyone is amassing digital information but no one knows how to sort through it. Closets are stacked with old computers. It would be better, of course, to go through all of one’s photos and keep only those worth keeping, but the thought of this induces paralyzing exhaustion. This would involve decision-making, which is cognitively taxing. This would involve delving deep into our personal histories, our pasts, which may involve feelings we don’t feel like feeling. It’s best to just take another photograph. Keep building up the database. Throw it into the cloud, whatever that is. It’s slightly stressful to know that one’s personal database is bloated and disorganized, but you can’t see my cloud. It’s my burden to bear, my weight to carry; luckily, since I’m small, it’s only a cloud... Absorb everything, all of it, at once. Stash it somewhere. Worry about it later.

Yes, Madame Web is that bad
Yesterday, I made my way down to Entertainment Cinemas in South Dennis so I could check out the film I’ve read and listened about across the past week, the latest in the Sony Spiderman Universe, Madame Web. Being the optimist I am, I had silently hoped that Madam Web would have had some redeeming qualities that the internet overlooked that I could come on here and talk about and, I can…

When Spidey Jumped the Shark, Pt. 7: The Roger Stern Era
An analysis of the #RogerStern Era of #SpiderMan. #WhenSpideyJumpedTheShark
The Roger Stern Era of Amazing Spider-Man had a nice little rehearsal space of sorts in the pages of Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man, as touched on last time. Continue reading When Spidey Jumped the Shark, Pt. 7: The Roger Stern Era

Madame Web (12): Timey Wimey Rubbish That Doesn't Bear Close Scrutiny.
#onemannsmovies #filmreview of #MadameWeb. Poor, incoherent entry in the Sony Marvel universe. Best avoided. 1.5/5.
A One Mann’s Movies review of “Madame Web” (2024). The latest Marvel – well, it’s from the rather dodgy Sony Marvel strand that includes the likes of “Venom” and “Morbius” – comes “Madame Web”. Now, I know a lot of Marvel fans tend to dump on the female-led movies (“Captain Marvel“, “WW:1984” and “The Marvels” are examples… surely there can’t be mysogeny amongst the Marvel fan-boy base?) But, to…

Madame Web (2024)
There’s something very important about movies that are “so bad it’s good” (henceforth SBIG) that a lot of people don’t understand. If you look up a list of these movies, you’ll find some titles that are indisputable: Troll 2, The Room, Battlefield: Earth. But you’ll also see people citing things like Sharknado and Birdemic, and although I think those could be argued to fall under this category,…

RWBY is literally a show where it keeps telling everyone to pay closer attention to the details beyond the initial aesthetic, but everyone keeps on ignoring it and getting mad when they inevitably run into a brick wall that RWBY is explicitly telling them is in their way.
Like, I'm expected to believe that they're deep "critical" thinkers who just see RWBY as bad, when they struggle to understand anything beyond the most surface level thoughts?
On a side note, it's also part of the reason I'm just thoroughly annoyed with their fixation on Monty. Because the irony is that for all of their outward adulation, their understanding of the man is so...shallow.
Constantly whining about the series being "woke", when one of his major hallmark videos that introduced us to him involved two women finding love in each other after spending years of their lives fighting to survive and protect others (Haloid)?
Basically treating Miles and Kerry like coattail riding hanger ons who stole RWBY from him for their own greed and agenda, despite the likelihood that if he were still alive, HE'D be getting lumped in with them and treated like the (derogatory) George Lucas of Web Animation because his own ideas probably weren't that dramatically different from theirs? And let's not forget their absolute disdain and disregard for his brother's opinion on the matter...
It's all so performative and resoundingly missing the point of his legacy that I'm frankly surprised they haven't popped their heads off from the sheer amount of logical twisting they have to do.
I've said this before but it bears repeating. There are no wasted moments in RWBY. I'm still shocked how many people miss things like the V4 time difference between Blake in Menagerie and the rest of the girls in Haven or even the Blake/Yang vs Adam fight taking place several minutes in the past compared to the fight against Cordovin.
I respect Monty, without him there would be no RWBY but without Kerry and Miles the RWBY we know wouldn't exist. This show has always been a collaborative effort from writers to artists to animators to musicians.
The HTDM can be summed up in one image:

RWBY being “childish” is far more a feature than a flaw.
I’ve been thinking about this since My Adventures With Superman started on Adult Swim. Though it shares a TV block with far more risque and PG-13 shows, it’s actually a TV-Y7 show sent there to avoid Davey-boy’s Max Axe (patent pending).
And a lot of people love it. Yes, you have doubters like how Live Wire is portrayed (so far, people) or Slade but plenty like how Clark Kent is the big blue boy scout actual fans have known him to be.
The fact is that if it was made for Adult Swim from inception, then chances are that it wouldn’t lean into such optimistic territory with Superman doing good for goodness sake or Lois and Jimmy being such delights. There’s likely to be some dark elements but none that other cartoons of today haven’t dipped their toe into within kids TV S&P.
That reminds me of RWBY except for the fact that the show never started out with kids in mind. Monty, Miles and Kerry even got their start writing for Red Vs. Blue which started as a dudebro web comedy and continued to be even as more epic elements were implimented.
RWBY easily could’ve been this Anime parody that took the piss out of the medium it was paying tribute to but there’s an earnestness to it that largely occurs with shows aimed at younger audiences or at least below older teens.
It could’ve gone for the type of Bathos that modern media has been racked over the coals for (despite it stemming from far more earlier examples like Action or Buddy Cop flicks) but it decided not to. I feel like that’s a significant factor in the “Childish” accusation.
It dares to say that Ironwood’s not the big strong general man who’ll see them through to Salem’s defect. It dares to say that Mantle isn’t just a few city blocks but full of people with a right to live and be protected. It dares to say that sacrifice shouldn’t even be the last option so much as not on the table at all.
It dares to say that a better world is possible with people who can better themselves.
And we need more stories outside of kids shows to dare and be that sincere. Hell, Anime overall has been popular because of a multitude of titles that dare to dream of a better world.
