It’s the early 70s, and future Oscar winner Rick Baker designs and executes Octaman. This is one of Kerwin Matthews (The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, Jack the Giant Killer) last roles, and he does a great job. any recommendations for readings on addiction as disability?
I have some, but not heaps! the truth is that the intersection between disability studies and addiction studies is not as big as I would like. I'm currently reading the book The Disabled Will: A Theory of Addiction, which. I would recommend people read for themselves, but I am not overly impressed with it for a variety of reasons. it's interesting though and definitely worth reading with a critical eye

As a quick grab in to cash in the success of Ray Harryhausen’s 7th voyage of sinbad from 1957 which is a masterpiece. Edward Small who turned it down ,saw the success of 7th Voyage of sinbad and made Jack the giant killer with 2 of the actors from 7th Voyage, Kerwin Matthews and Toruń Thatcher, but not the talents of Ray Harryhausen. Instead it’s Jim Danforth animation which is ok but pales on comparison to the sinbad movie. It’s not a bad movie but take it as it is . It’s a cash in on sinbad . Even the giant resembles the cyclops ftom 7th voyage . Except it has 2 eyes . This is more of a children’s movie. It was remade in 2013 and then of course the asylum company did their usual cash in made for the sci fi channel . The asylum company is notorious for doing their own low budget versions of mainstream movies .

Synopsis: Daredevil and Black Widow are in an training session talking about their personal matters, and how as Matthew Murdock, he hasn't met Kerwin J. Broderick, the head of Broderick, Sloan, & Murdock, and how Matt has yet to meet him since being employed there. After their session together, they meet with Ivan who brings them their mail. Inside they find an invitation to a cocktail party being held by Kerwin J. Broderick himself, who is anxious to meet Matt Murdock.
Meanwhile, the mastermind behind San Francisco's crime rackets has hired Kraven the Hunter in order to defeat or kill Daredevil. When the man offers Kraven the money, the hunter refuses telling him he only works for the thrill of the hunt.
Later that date, Matthew Murdock arrives on the job at Broderick, Sloan & Murdock to learn that his partner Jason Sloan has gotten him an postponement of trail on the Research Centre vandals that he is representing. Murdock is furious because he has no intention to change his plea because he has enough evidence to find them innocent. This causes turbulence between Jason and Matt, and makes him wonder about the ethics of his employer since the orders came from Broderick.
Returning home, Matt finds that the mansion has been attacked and Ivan bound up. Untying Natasha's bodyguard he learns that Natasha has been kidnapped by Kraven the Hunter who has demanded at Daredevil meet him at the San Francisco Zoo. Arriving there Daredevil is instantly attacked by Kraven. As the Man Without Fear manages to hold his own, he demands that Kraven show him where Natasha is. When Kraven finally does, he does so with dramatic flair: He has Natasha tied to the ground in the elephants pen and has blown a horn sending the gigantic beasts into a frenzy. Daredevil breaks off the first to rescue Natasha allowing Kraven to escape and begin plotting the next phase of his attack on Daredevil.
Six days alter, Matt and Natasha head over to Broderick's mansion for the cocktail party and meet Broderick for the first time. The party is dull and Matt and Natasha cause some controversy among the elite that are there. Just then Kraven the Hunter bursts through the window. While Natasha keeps him busy, Matt slips away in order to change into Daredevil. The two heroes have the upper hand fighting Kraven in closed quarters, forcing the criminal to take the battle outside.
There Kraven gets the advantage, knocking out Black Widow with a tranquilizer dart and then knocking Daredevil unconscious. With the Man Without Fear knocked out, Kraven lifts the hero over his head, poised to throw him off a cliff into the rocky waters below.

Mark Brunner here…welcome to this Passing Day! Here’s your This Passing Day message for the week!
Do some words mispronounced consistently in the press annoy you? I have to confess, it’s one of my many foibles.
I’m a writer. I love words. To be a writer, loving words is presumptive of being a good writer. Decades ago I had a professor in college, Dr. Kirwan. He was the professor who guided me through and graded my Senior Thesis. I received an A- on the paper and on the semester course. Dr. Kerwin wrote in red pen on the title page: “Mark, this is an A paper, but I question some of your spelling irregularities and word choices. Words have a tremendous value. Be careful how you use them.” He read the whole paper word for word as his pencil marks were everywhere. He was right. I didn’t take enough care of the words I had used. To this day I remember his advice every time I write a blog like this. It’s been said that “Words are the most powerful things in the universe... Words are containers. They contain faith, or fear, and they produce after their kind.” Our words are important because words are one of the most incredible tools God has given us to relate truth to one another.
So, the purpose of this BLOG story? Every time I hear a mispronunciation of a noble word in our English language I take it somewhat personally. Perhaps that’s the bane of being a writer. I wonder. Are there no longer any wordsmiths like Dr. Kirwin out there to grade the everyday use of our beautiful English language? Folks, the word is “especially” not “expecially!” I can’t tell you how often I hear this excellent word mispronounced even by trained and experienced newscasters. So pardon my preoccupation with a word. I understand that as language evolves perhaps the latter word, expecially, may eventually replace the former, especially. But until that time, please take the time to both spell and say the word according to the norm? Words are a very special commodity. God chose “words” with which to communicate His Word to us. Words are His “container,” and as such they ought to be ours as well. Treasure your words. They indeed “contain faith, or fear, and they produce after their kind.” God bless our words; especially when we give them freely to others.
Let’s go to another word problem I’m having. What’s with the word “chaos” being thrown around so freely these days?
This week we’ve heard a lot of rhetoric centered on the word “chaos.” Many opponents to President Trump have used this word to describe the state of our current governing status under a President they do not personally like. Like puppets on a stage they repeat the words “chaos” and “chaotic” in their anti-Trump speeches. When I hear a word repeated so repeatedly and in unison like this, my first thought is: Do they know what the word even means? For that matter, if they do, what is the state of affairs they are aiming for in opposition to chaos? Is it control over what is deemed chaotic? Is the assumption that the opposite of what President Trump is offering is what his opponents are advocating—political and economic control? Is that even possible?
One of the greatest illusions we face is the belief that we’re in control of our lives or anything for that matter. But the truth is, we never have been. While we can influence some things—our routines, habits, and decisions—true control is out of our hands. People can follow strict diets, exercise daily, and live disciplined lives, yet still face illness or hardship. No matter how many good choices we make, the outcome ultimately belongs to God (Proverbs 19:21). Though it can be unsettling to realize how little control we have, there is peace in trusting the One who is in control. God has known our steps from the beginning (Psalm 139:13–16), and nothing escapes His attention (Hebrews 4:13; Matthew 10:29–31). Nothing is too difficult for Him (Jeremiah 32:17; Luke 1:37).
Worry accomplishes nothing (Matthew 6:27). Instead, we’re called to rest in God and trust Him to work (Psalm 46:10). He will never fail us (Deuteronomy 31:8; Isaiah 41:10). Life may feel overwhelming, but we belong to a loving Savior who offers rest and peace when we seek Him (Matthew 11:28–29; Jeremiah 29:13). Keep your eyes on Jesus—He is faithful, and He is always in control.
And, just to stay on the topic of words, are you familiar with the word “manosphere?”
Although I try to stay current with cultural trends, this particular topic—“the manosphere”—had escaped me until today. Maybe it’s my age (73), or maybe I haven’t pursued the latest talking points as actively as I should of. I only heard the term today, mentioned on TV in relation to six women completing a brief space flight. Curious, I looked it up.
According to Wikipedia, the “manosphere” is a collection of blogs and forums focused on masculinity, often opposing feminism and promoting the idea that society is biased against men. The term “red pill,” from The Matrix, is often used to describe the awakening to these beliefs. Based on that definition, it seems the commentator misused the word in the context of women in space. Still, it got me thinking: what is God’s will for men in today’s world? I don’t thing the commentator used the term in the right context to the story. Nevertheless, rather than the “manosphere,” perhaps we need a new sphere to talk about relevant to todays’ men. “Man-up Sphere”—a space where men seek to live as God designed, and women support that calling. For that, we start with the Bible.
Jesus modeled true manhood: leadership through servanthood. He said the greatest must be the servant of all (Matt. 23:11) and demonstrated this by washing His disciples’ feet (John 13:12–15). Husbands are called to love their wives as Christ loved the Church (Eph. 5:25). We must also value women as the Bible does. Proverbs 31 celebrates women who are wise, resourceful, compassionate, and strong—not just beautiful or child-bearing. Men and women are not meant to compete but to complement each other in Christ.
Biblical sexuality is clear: marriage is between one man and one woman, for life. Though concubines existed in ancient times, this was not God's command. Any sexual relationship outside of marriage is sin in Greek). Since the Fall (Gen. 3:15–16), men and women have struggled. But Christ’s atoning work reconciles us to God—and to one another. Through Him, we can pursue true harmony and righteousness, far beyond any flawed cultural trend.
Manosphere is really not relevant to how God has called men to task their lives. Let’s drop any notion that this term and adherents to it are relevant either. Manning-up does however. Red pill? Not really, There’s really no pill involved here at all. God’s Word is plain and we need no “pill” to make it better or more instructive. Consume His Word and both men and women will find no pill needed at all.

Middle schoolers consecrates themselves to Mary (I)
Seventy students knelt before an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe on her feast day Dec. 12 at St. Fabian Catholic School in Farmington Hills, MI, and consecrated themselves to Jesus through his Blessed Mother.
Students in fifth through eighth grade spent the month preparing for their Marian consecration by reading the book "33 Days to Morning Glory: A Do-It-Yourself Retreat In Preparation for Marian Consecration" by Fr. Michael E. Gaitley, MIC, praying a daily decade of the rosary and sacrificing their recess and lunch hour once a week for small group discussions.
The students' act of radical faith came at the suggestion of Fr. Matthew Kurt, who was preparing to renew his own Marian consecration on the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, also his birthday.
Fr. Kurt, who was ordained by Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron in May and assigned to St. Fabian in July, approached Kim Kerwin, the parish director of religious education and a middle school theology teacher at St. Fabian, with the idea of leading both the parish and the school to make their Marian consecration.
“We told the kids, ‘Absolutely no pressure; nobody has to do it, but if you want to do this, you are going to meet with us once a week during lunch and recess. We are going to meet with you guys and talk and reflect with you about what the reading for the last week was like, and we are going to give you discussion questions,’” Kerwin explained.
Kerwin and Fr. Kurt expected no more than 10 students to sign up — instead, 70 signed up and saw it through to the end.
“It was overwhelming how, including unlikely kids, said, ‘Yeah, that sounds awesome. I do want to give up recess for a time to go and sit and talk about Mary,’” Kerwin said.
Kerwin divided the students into boys and girls small groups by grade and appointed an eighth grader as the leader of each group. Kerwin and Fr. Kurt encouraged the students to go to confession in preparation for their consecration.
The fruits of the consecration were already apparent before the act itself, Kerwin said. Students reread passages while in class, carry the book around in school, and reference it regularly in their classes.
“We’ve heard some really great conversations among the kids,” Kerwin said. “It is not a super hard book, but some of them are 10 or 11 years old, and they are chewing on this and really digesting the goodness of the Blessed Mother, the beauty of the Immaculate Conception and how she is a Mediatrix that takes us to Jesus. And I have seen them grow in their faith.”
