I'm researching a bunch of stuff for an essay I'm writing, basically the more polished version of my post going around about the power imbalances in being homeless. And the more research I do the more angry I get. Like, none of this is news to me. It wasn't news to me 12 years ago before I became homeless, or at any point during the last 10 years when I've been alternating between homeless and wildly housing insecure. Just to be clear.
Specifically I'm looking for perspectives from homeless people and, unsurprisingly, there isn't much of that sort of thing out there. Homeless people are online and talking about our experiences plenty, but I guess we're more fun as a thought experiment when it comes to actual researchers, or posts that are clickable, or whatever.
There's a TON of stuff, however, about how housing first works, about how homelessness itself is traumatic and happens more often to abuse victims, yet the overall lack of trauma-informed care that exists for homeless resources, about how we KNOW homelessness happens to more marginalized groups because we also know WHY homelessness happens and it's NOT because of mental illness or substance abuse or because all homeless people are shitty, it's because housing and healthcare are too expensive for what people are getting paid. There are dozens upon dozens upon dozens of sources and studies that point to these facts spanning back decades. This isn't news to anyone.
And the more I read about this, the more angry I get. Its not just the fucking government, and my communities, I've BEEN angry at them. I could expound for hours on the ways I've been failed by social connections that were supposed to hold and nourish me. But the more I read about this, the angrier I get at my parents and my affluent, neoliberal family members who have sat by and watched me be homeless for a decade knowing full well that I'm disabled. People who told me to pitch a tent while they lived in luxury, who can't even be bothered to buy my art, people who speculate from the comfort of their multiple homes that I need the character building, and they wouldn't want to "rob me of my accomplishments."
And the longer it goes on for the more ridiculous it is. I don't think I want to be in contact with any of these fucking people tbqh. These are "well educated" liberals who know how to do research. They know how to fucking read. They KNOW all of this, if you said it in conversation, they wouldn't act surprised. They just don't actually internalize any of it. Because the shit I'm talking about would inconvenience them and thier lifestyle and it would also force them to confront their own biases about poor people and they don't wanna :( they're comfy :(
The fact of the matter is, I'm queer and disabled and mentally ill and radical and I don't live a normal lifestyle and my parents, no matter how ~wacky granola crunchy hippie leftist pagan~ they were at one point, are deeply ashamed of me for not fitting the mold they had in mind. This is what it means to "fall through the cracks" - not that people forget about you. you are swept to the small, unseen place on purpose because you are unsightly and it makes People Who Actually Matter uncomfys to acknowledge you. Because if they admit that it's not your fault and it really could happen to anyone, then everything they built thier life on was just an exhausting lie. Their whole sense of self tied to all of their work and the things they're able to buy and consume, if all of that can be taken away in an instant, then what was the point of giving so much of yourself to it? What was the point, indeed.

Sometimes I wish we would start calling out the performative radicalism on this site for the poser bullshit it is. "Remember, it's always morally correct to kill a cop!" "Don't forget to firebomb your local government office!" "Wow, it sure would be a shame if these instructions on how to make a molotov cocktail got spread around!"
Okay. But you're not killing cops or firebombing government offices. You are posting on a dying microblogging website to a carefully-curated echo chamber that has radicalized itself into thinking that taking the absolute most extreme position on any subject is praxis but that anyone discussing the most practical way to effect actual change is your sworn enemy. You do not have the street cred OR the activist cred to be talking about killing cops, babe.

"I think this Category of human being is disposable" okay that not only sucks and is fascist but also makes getting you to deem someone to be disposable a simple matter of convincing you they're in The Category regardless of the truth. Also The Category is often misapplied to a vulnerable minority because it makes people like you agree they're disposable.
"Anyone who disagrees with me about The Category of people being disposable is a Category apologist or probably also in The Category themselves" Oh so you're just totally unconcerned with truth or justice or ethics or human rights and just are feeding your bloodlust for the sake of revenge fantasies. got it 👍

I'm not making this a reblog because there have been a lot of posts this applies to and I'm sure there will be more.
But if you ever do find that perfectly pure candidate that you feel can vote for without morally compromising yourself--that person with a completely stainless career and no blood on their hands--they will still step into the morass created by all their predecessors. They will have blood on their hands from the moment they take office. The blood comes with the office. There is no way to avoid that.
If they want to not execute the evil and unjust laws which they have just sworn to faithfully execute, they will have the choice of flouting the law or changing it. Both of these are difficult, take time, and cannot be done by one person's fiat.
Laws are made by Congress; changing a law--even the worst one on the books! even that one!--means getting a majority of both houses on board. This is drastically easier if the president's party has a majority in both houses, but still requires coordinating literally hundreds of people to do what you want; if the president's party does not have that trifecta, it may simply be impossible until after the next elections.
Flouting the law--just deciding to ignore it--sets a worrisome precedent: In general, we would like the executive branch to follow the laws of the country! But beyond that, it is also difficult and also requires coordinating with hundreds of other people. The administrative state is designed to run on rails. The administration can hand down guidance on the interpretation of laws--which often as not gets challenged legally and needs to be resolved by the courts, which is a whole other level of complication and, currently, a whole other level of fucked up--but ordering federal agencies to violate the law wholesale is usually going to be a non-starter. Even when the law is bad. Until the law is actually changed, which, see above, sometimes the most that can be done is harm reduction--delay implementation, narrow the scope, tie it up in red tape.
And. Look. I want you to find that perfect candidate. I long for the day that someone can make it all the way into the highest office without ever compromising their morals. But if they do, they will become complicit with all the horrors their predecessors left to us. There is no way to dismantle those horrors without taking on some degree of complicity.
When the machine is covered so thickly with blood, pulling the off switch still gets blood on your hands.

Something about the fact that these shots are all grouped together, one after another, visually giving them equal weight just gets me. The narrative knows what's going to happen between JGY and Huaisang at this point, knows how it's going to treat JGY at the end of everything. And it still takes time to show Meng Yao instinctively and immediately going in front of Huaisang and Huaisang instinctively and immediately hiding behind him. It takes the time--literally, showed it in the background and focused on it with the same general amount of time as the other shots--to show that this act of protection and trust are just as real and true as Jiang Cheng defending his sister, as Wen Qing defending her younger brother.
Like, I dunno! There are other Nie juniors there! They have swords and shit! Huaisang could have gone and hid behind the wall, but he hid behind Meng Yao! And Meng Yao could have moved back with Huaisang, but he steps directly in front of him!
There's a lot CQL did to JGY's character and narrative that I don't like and that flatten or just straight up erase his full complexity. But I really appreciate the lengths that it went to in Episode 4 to explicitly tell us that he does not hesitate to protect Huaisang, even though at this point he does not have a sword and definitely does not have anywhere near the same cultivation power (if any) as any of the rest of the people in the room.
Right now, after being publicly humiliated, unarmed and definitely outclassed, he is brave. Along with the rest of the characters, he's allowed to be uncomplicatedly young and loyal and just as innocent as any of the other students there.

Heyyyy since there's talk of the Breezepelt Attacking Poppyfrost scene going around, I just wanna remind people that he explicitly does that because he was groomed by the Dark Forest. Jayfeather points it out on the page that Breezepelt's stated motivation doesn't make sense, because it's not actually a rational idea Breezy-P came up with. It's then shown that actual factual evil demons are exploiting the anger he has from being a victim of child abuse, to indoctrinate and manipulate him into radical violence
I wrote a little essay about this with citations and stuff. It wasn't "for no reason," and anyone who tries to use the scene as "evidence" of Breezepelt being Secretly Evil to justify the abuse he underwent as a kid either didn't read it, has bad reading comprehension skills, or is cherrypicking on purpose.
Crowfeather emotionally and physically abused his child, Breezepelt was socially alienated by WindClan as a result, which leads to this moment. That is what is on the page.
