“Thought you couldna live without me, eh?”

You tackle Soap in a hug, tactical gear and all. "Shut up. Shut up. God, you're alive."

He laughs and returns the embrace. "Too stubborn to die. I thought I told you not to worry about me."

You grip the straps on the back of his vest and keep your face in his chest to hide the tears threatening to track down your cheeks. "You can't just say that and go MIA. They talked about putting your name on a memorial and everything."

"You know me. Always gotta do things my way."

"Your way is stupid."

He chuckles and rubs your back. "Yeah, I'm stupid. I've missed you, though. I haven't stopped thinkin' bout you."

"Really? Cause I..." The dam breaks. You can't stop the flood of hot, angry tears. "I missed you too." Then you start sobbing. God, it's embarrassing. But you refuse to let go of him.

He strokes your hair. "Hen, don't cry. Please. I'm here and I'm not goin' anywhere. I'm your man, aye?"

You shake your head, stubbornly refusing to move.

He rests his cheek on you. "I don't want you to be sad. I'll make it up to you, I promise. I love you."

Hearing him say that just makes your heart skip before the tears come out faster. You love him, too, more than a friend should. How could anyone not fall in love with him? He's Johnny. It's just that you were always too chickenshit to tell him. You thought you lost your chance.

"Come on, look at me."

"No," you mutter, refusing to unbury your face from his shirt. Scared to, maybe. "I don't want you to make it up to me. I want to stay here."

"That's no problem. We can stay here for however long. I just need to know you're not upset at me. I can't stand seein' you sad. Makes me sad."

You sniff. "You deserve it."

"Aye, I do. But what can I do to cheer you up'?"

"Nothing," you mumble into his chest. "I've been crying for two weeks because of you."

You try to collect yourself anyway, wiping your eyes with your sleeve. His squadmates stand a little ways away from the terminal, looking curious at this scene you're causing. This isn't exactly how you wanted to meet them. You're supposed to be Johnny's cool best friend, not a weepy mess.

Johnny recaptures your attention, wiping away a stray tear track with his thumb. "You've been cryin' about me?"

You shove him, but it's light and there's no anger in it. "Of course I have, asshole, you're my best friend. They said you were MIA. Why wouldn't I cry?"

He grins. "But I'm here now, though. Could use a wee bit of comforting myself. You mind?"

You sniff, nodding as you press your sleeves into your eyes one more time to dry them. He's right. He's the one who's been away from home for a month. Probably endured some draconian shit, missing for two weeks and all. But the way he's looking at you through those blue eyes of his... it's not fair how easy it is to fall under his spell again.

"Yeah. I guess. What do you want? More fawning and crying?"

He laughs softly and pulls you into another tight hug. He presses a kiss to your temple, and you have to act like it doesn't make your heart explode into tiny pieces. He rests his chin on the top of your head, content to keep you here, totally enveloped in his frame. "Mm, that'll do. Just to start."

okay it's pretty much wip weds so here's a big ol' preview of the first chapter of my rugan mini-series because i'm so fucking excited for it :') i hope i can get this out asap rocky because in my mind him and syl are the cutest couple ever!!

“You’re the one ol’ Seamus was mentioning?” 

As he speaks, he slowly sits up with a groan. Allowing her to explore his features further —unfortunately coming to the conclusion that he’s honestly quite attractive. With light hair and quite arguably the bluest eyes she’s ever seen, he’s got the facial structure of a proper noble. With a stiff jaw and pronounced cheekbones, she’s surprised he looks as good as he does considering his line of work. Having seen her fair share of busted-up mercenaries, it’s certainly a surprising sight. 

“I am, yeah.”

“You bring coin?”

Without missing a beat she discards her lantern on the nearest surface before bending down towards the base of her skirt, lifting the hem a little past her knee to reveal a hidden bag containing a pouch of gold. 

“Five hundred. Just like you asked.” 

He gives her a sly grin, curiously raising his hand to his lips. “And you’re aware that’s just the speaker's fee?” 

“Mhm.” 

After grabbing the pouch, she tosses it over, watching him catch it with ease before handing it off to his friend. Both of them staring as the tiefling practically tears it open with a grin.  

“Alright, go on then.” 

“I need to get to Daggerford as soon as possible,” she begins. Taking a moment to wet her lips with her tongue. Immediately noticing the way the human’s brow rises. “I have a friend waiting for me there —an important one who’s willing to pay you for your services once we arrive safely.”

“Daggerford?” 

She nods, watching as he looks back towards the tiefling. Neither one of them speaking but clearly communicating in their own way, causing her to nervously continue. “I’m sure you’re already aware of the time it’d take to get there, considering it’s along the major trade route but—“

“Listen, lass, I’ll be honest. We don’t normally take escort missions,” he interrupts. His voice is unbearably nice in tone, bordering on sickly sweet as he shuffles toward the edge of the bed.

“May I ask why?”

“Liabilities.” He shrugs his shoulders and looks up at her with a smile, flashing a well-kept set of teeth before pursing his lips. “Most of your lot tend to expire before they make it to their desired destinations.”

Her stomach lurches at the thought before the insulting tone of his voice registers against her ears, making her frown. “What do you mean by my lot?”

Again, all he does is smile and shrug. Looking so smug that she has to fight the urge to throw her palm against that pretty-looking cheek of his. 

Something he immediately notices as he lets out a low chuckle. “No need to get offended, dear, I’m just telling the truth. Rich folk like you tend to lack the understanding of what it is we do.”

“Which is?”

“Go where the money is first of all.”

Below the cut is a little snippet of an upcoming chapter for New Tricks~ (pretty much the only thing I write)

Sal sighed as he sat his pack down and collapsed onto the inn bed. The road from Crimmor had been rough. Conditions had been fair, no beasts nor bandits had accosted them, and yet the mood had been nothing short of dour. Olly had sulked the whole time and Bellar had been terse and demanding. Sal was certain if they had spent another day on the road the two of them would’ve come to blows. For all his talk of seniority Sal had a feeling that Bellar did not actually enjoy the mantle of leadership. Bellar was more for fighting, less for responsibility and morale.

“Don’t forget to send Izzy.” Olly was kicking his boots off as he stretched out on his own twin bed across from Sal’s.

“Give me a minute to get my bearings, Olly.”

“Right.” Olly replied but continued to stare at Sal expectantly.

“Dammit Olly.” Sal sat up and crossed his legs, closing his eyes so he could focus on the spell. “I can still feel you staring Olly, give me some space.”

“Sorry.” Came the sheepish reply, and he heard the lad shuffle to look the other way.

Sal exhaled slowly and envisioned the glyphs in his mind, his fingers tracing their various shapes in the air. Thinking carefully to ensure his message was clear, concise and no more than twenty-five words.

‘Hello Izzy, we’ve arrived in Athkatla. We’re staying at the Adamantine Mug. How fare you and our illustrious leader?’

‘Sal.’ Came the swift reply. ‘he is well enough to speak. I will send him soon as he is able, sooner if he doesn’t learn to hold his damned tongue.’

“Shit.”

“What did she say?”

“Patience Olly.”

Sal focused on casting the spell a second time.

‘Rugan, what in the nine hells did you do to fuck up the best thing that ever happened to you, nay any man?’

‘Sod off wizard.’ Came the terse reply.

“Fucker.” Sal hissed, regretting wasting the spell slot.

“Well?”

“He’s awake and making an ass of himself.”
