Probably one of the best scene I’ve ever drawn in a comics so far. Haven’t had this much fun drawing in awhile. And I think it’s because I didn’t get so bogged down with the need to draw realistically and just went with the flow and see where my hand takes me. #inking #digitalart #comics #graphicnovel #drawing #workinprogressart #thefoxmaidens #koreanfolklore #gumiho #demon #happyoctober #spooky #horror #lightning https://www.instagram.com/p/CVUBwCslrC-/?utm_medium=tumblr

ARC Review: Dragon Pearl
Tumblr media
Image from Rick Riordan Presents website
Dragon Pearl by Yoon Ha Lee
Release: January 15, 2019
Publisher: Rick Riordan Presents/Disney Hyperion
*I received an ARC of this title through a friend (who acquired a copy at an ALA conference).*
I picked this book up because I fell, exactly like publishers hoped I would, for the stamped logo of “Rick Riordan Presents” on the cover. On a basic level this means the novel is published by a small branch of Disney-Hyperion publishing that includes Rick Riordan’s endorsement. The novels are typically middle grade and focus on fantasy that’s centered around folklore, myths, and legends. If you want a more in-depth look into this publishing branch, then click here. Now onto the book!
Dragon Pearl is advertised as a middle grade space opera based on Korean folklore. The main character, thirteen year old Min, is a Fox. She has the ability to shapeshift/glamour herself into other people or objects and can use her magic to Charm those around her for a limited time. Upon Min’s family being notified her brother has gone missing, she sets out to explore other planets to find him. Along the way she meets pirates, steals ships, and learns more about her Fox ancestry (and others such as Tigers and Goblins).
Overall, I was thoroughly intrigued by the Korean influences Lee included building this world. The norms set up with the planetary governments and the culture within the worlds were fascinating. Lee also established realistic prejudices among the groups that added provoking elements and conflict as Min discovers hatred toward Foxes first hand. You see this come up again and again as Min is learning more about her abilities and life outside her little town. I think Lee has enough set up to expand this world building even further, though. I want a bit more on that front.
I enjoyed this book, I really did. However, I have two qualms. First, I felt the novel was a bit slow paced for a space opera (until you get to the last third of the book). Maybe I’m just used to more action in adult novels. My second qualm was with our protagonist. She’s interesting, but I felt she was too adult for a 13 year old. Yes, I know it’s fantasy and she can shape shift and Charm people, but I felt many of her capabilities just popped up so conveniently without any realistic underpinning for their origins (like her uncanny ability to fly a spaceship).
I’m giving Dragon Pearl 3 out of 5 Awesome Austin Points. It was an enjoyable foray into Korean folklore and culture. Of course it seemed a bit young to me (I am an adult reading a middle grade novel), but I think children will enjoy it. They’ll also probably have an easier time suspending disbelief about our protagonist’s abilities. :) This book comes out this week so get out there and find a copy on Tuesday!

Hi everyone! Sorry for being away, I tested positive to covid but I'm good! So here's one of the two reviews I forgot to post last week! Hope you enjoy them!
This book came to me thanks to the book club of two of my favorite booktubers @alexandra_roselyn and @kalynabridged, when I got to reading it I was enchanted and surprise at how much this story meant to me. This is one of my favorite middle grade books ever. And my favorite book of the year.
In When You Trap a Tiger by Tae Keller we follow Lily’s journey back to her Halmoni (grandmother). She doesn’t know the reason her and her mom and sister have to go live with her, but she is happy, her Halmoni is the one person that gets her and loves her, with all her perkiness.
On the road she sees a Tiger, but only she sees it. The Tiger offers her a deal, bring back the story jars her Halmoni stole from the sky and she will get better. But you can’t trust a Tiger. But this might be her only option to save her Halmoni.
I was captured by this book from the start, the way it is written it is beautiful and lyrical. I love seeing how we can see the parallel of the stories go hand-in-hand with Lily’s family history. How there are things, that as adults, we bury and refuse to talk to. To avoid others from pain and more suffering.
This book brought lots of emotions in me, from happiness, sadness, crying, remembering and it brought (once again) the magic of stories, the magic of words and that, sometimes, asking for help, letting go of the stories we have inside is the best way to give ourselves to others. Love and understanding are never a burden to people who truly loves us.
I would 100% would recommend this book, I’m in debt to Lexie and Kalyn for bringing this book into my life, and also, the author for making me feel things too deeply. Can’t wait to read more from Tae Keller.

A New Pair of Glasses: The fifth and final photograph from the Korean Project, created specifically for my retrospective at the @hobanartrium , South Korea. This one speaks to something I occasionally struggle with- myopia. Not that I’m physically nearsighted, I wear reading glasses, but I can be nearsighted in my thinking from time to time. And, it’s in that closed-off space that missed opportunities, unlearned lessons and chance relationships come and go unnoticed. It leaves me wondering what my stubborn ego has robbed me of over the years. But, that’s just me. And, as for me, my hope is to be able to put aside all that I think I know about something, in any given situation, and try to see it differently, through a new pair of glasses. @gilleanmcleod @thewakingspirit @absofruitely @sharkmeister1609 @anthonynex @mahrvellous @lifeofbecktoria #thankyou @_sidecarww_ #koreanfolklore #anime #newpairofglasses https://www.instagram.com/p/CUK1Y__JAYk/?utm_medium=tumblr

Episode 6: Meet Me in Daegu of #LovecraftCountry had me reaching for this #BOTMbook that has been sitting on my shelf for months. Wicked Fox follows Gu Miyoung a gumiho, nine-tailed fox, who may he falling in love with a human boy. I love reading books dealing with cultural folklore and supernatural beings. The myth of the gumiho/kumiho is fascinating and I'm interested to see the difference in the portrayal of the gumiho in this book versus Lovecraft Country. #KoreanFolklore #YA #BookOfTheMonth #Kuhimo #WickedFox #KatCho #representationmatters diversifyyourbookshelf #nerdymama #booknerd #bibliophile #nerdymamabooks #Bookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CFncOsVgFPU/?igshid=1egt05qzu27q4

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Rating: This book was the K-drama turned book I needed in my life. Every other chapter I would stop and say out loud “OMG, this is a freaking K-drama!” The nonstop action and romance is what made me fall in love with this book. It also reminded me of one of my first K-dramas I ever watched, My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, and the author slyly mentioned this drama and I was so HYPED! I loved how this book showed the struggles Miyoung dealt with in her life and how Jihoon helped her through them. Forgiveness was also a big factor in this book by showing it isn’t easy to forgive when pride is in the way, and I related a lot to Jihoon in that way when it came to how hard it was to forgive the people he loved like his mother and Miyoung. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a great representation of Korean folklore and family love. . . It’s Fall Ya’ll🍁🍂 (I’m probably the 1,000th person to say that on Instagram) but fall is my favorite time of year because it’s getting colder! Anyone who knows me knows that I hate being hot and I’m always hot no matter where I am and what I’m doing. What is your favorite or least favorite season? Action-packed #penandink #illustration by Peter Han (@peterhanstyle), depicting his character, The Blacksmith, charging (sliding?) down a snow-covered hillside. The Blacksmith thought he might be able to outrun the pair of Dokkaebi chasing him, but the Dokkaebi appear to be just as dexterous down that steep slope as the Blacksmith himself… sure hope that Dokkaebi club he stole was worth the effort! Dokkaebi are creatures from Korean folklore that are very similar to European-style ogres and trolls in size. In some stories the Dokkaebi have a bit more of a mischievous bent of pixies, gnomes, imps or gremlins. In other stories, though, they can be quite dangerous… especially if you steal their Dokkaebi club, which is a magical artifact that allows the wielder to summon up anything from nothing. I would think that such an ability would be quite useful for anyone, but especially for a legendary blacksmith! As we might have expected, Peter’s artistic skills are inspiring. Intricate and dark designs on the armor and body of the Blacksmith place him firmly within the “land” of man, while the lighter, looser Dokkaebi are beings of folklore and not entirely of this world. In need of some inspiration? Check out Peter’s Instagram or https://www.artstation.com/artist/peterhanstyle for many more awesome pieces of artwork. ::---👹---:: #fantasy #sketchbook #sketcheveryday #mythology #korea #koreanmyth #koreanfolklore #Dokkaebi #koreanmonster #peterhanstyle #folklore #club #fighting #characterdesign #ogre #troll #magic #theblacksmith #blackandwhite #wolf #snow #paper #penart #linedrawing #drawing

Do I have a mug problem? NO! Why would you even suggest such a thing?! 😜 I especially don’t since the hubs put up a new mug rack for me, so I have EVEN MORE space to put them. MY MUG COLLECTION SHALL BE ENDLESS! MWAHAHA! MWAHAHAHAHA!!! . Ahem, so, the book, hooray for Korean folklore and sci-fi! I've been reading more and more middle grade this year. It's such fun to read. It’s so snappy, and I feel like the concepts are more adventurous than YA sometimes. The YA industry is such a juggernaut--a juggernaut, I love, mind you, but a juggernaut nonetheless--they tend to stick to what they know works, which is usually what has already worked a lot in the past. But I digress. I really enjoyed this book. The Space Force organization felt a lot like my beloved Star Trek, and the way Yoon Ha Lee combines magic and sci-fi was well cool. I hardly ever see that--possibly because having both can make things OP real quick. . Back on mugs, this one is another goodie I picked up on vacation. Swipe to see it transform with hot water! . . . . . #booknerd #books #booksarelife #booksaremagic #bookstagram #bookstagramcommunity #bookstagrammer #bookworm #read #reader #reading #lovetoread #bookdragon #bookwyrm #booknerd #booknerdigans #danafraedrich #dragonpearl #yoonhalee #yoonhaleeauthor #koreanfolklore #koreanfolkloreinspired #supportaapiauthors #bookandmug #booksandmugs

Smokeless: As part of my upcoming retrospective at the @hobanartrium Museum in South Korea, I’ve been commissioned by Curator, Cecilia Jo, to create a series of photographs specifically for the exhibit. Although a Korean theme was suggested, the approach to the concepts was up to me. My first thought out of the box was to reference Korean and Japanese anime; a genre of animation I’ve had a long love affair with, dating back to the days of Speed Racer. It continued through my parenting years, getting to experience a whole new generation of anime through the eyes of my daughter. (She and I would see a select few over, and over, and over again.) I decided I wanted the visual complexion of the series to be inspired by the characters, costumes and styling in the animated films I adore. But, what would the messages be? In stepped Jo, who introduced me to Korean folklore and idioms. It’s within those stories and proverbs that I found the whimsy and lightness consistent with my own sensibilities and aspirations. Much like the sayings and anecdotes I grew up with, these “rules to live by” are meant to inspire us in living life consciously, and with good intentions for ourselves, as well as for others. Besides, I really didn’t feel comfortable interpreting ancient Korean writings, being a Westerner, and all. That said, these messages, although universal in meaning, are things that are important to me. They are subjects that are close to my heart. The bottom line is, these are suggestions we, as a species, can all understand and hopefully employ. So, first up is this “suggestion” titled, Smokeless, that begs the question- What would the world be like with more butterflies in the air than pollutants? Can you imagine what that would be like? Lastly, there are some amazing people who helped make this series happen and want to acknowledge their contributions to the project. Thank you @gilleanmcleod @thewakingspirit @sharkmeister1609 @mahrvellous @lifeofbecktoria @absofruitely @anthonynex @nexstudios I could not have done it without you. #moretocome #koreanfolklore #koreanidioms @_sidecarww_ (at Gwangmyeong) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTkRATgHEOB/?utm_medium=tumblr
