@izumikoushiroweek: Day 1 - Koushirou interacting with his parents / It’s (not) lonely at the top

Don't we all love to see more of the Izumi family? I certainly do and I am 100% convinced that this would end up being their preferred method of communication while Koushirou is in his early to mid twenties. He is a communicator through and through, he would have made sure to enable all his loved ones with proper devices to stay in touch with them - but he may also neglect his personal needs a little too much. Thus it's important to have his Digimon partner nudge him towards remembering to call his parents every once in a while - even if he may still live with them at that point in time, he would spend most of his days (and nights) in his office, navigating both his company and all kinds of Chosen Children business. He is so prone to losing himself in work that he probably doesn't realize that it can get a little lonely sometimes. He does love his parents after all, he's very likely to also financially support them in return after having been supported by them all these years. So even if he forgets to check in on them every now and then - they won't forget. And so they will make this work. Always.

Koushiro Week 2022 - Day 3: Friends/Life Outside of the Chosen

Title: Confessions Characters: Koushiro Izumi, Kae Izumi, Masami Izumi, Tentomon, Natsuki Kato (OC) and Akemi Murakami (OC). Summary: It's a new era in Koushiro's life. Koushiro stood in the sidewalk staring up at his college building. He had been stuck there for at least ten minutes and he didn’t think he could move at all. “Koushiro?” Kae Izumi placed her hand on his shoulder gently and that seemed to break his trance. “Is everything okay, sweetie?” “Everything is fine, I guess.” He looked at her and shrugged. “I’m just nervous about my first day.” “That’s understandable. I felt nervous on my first day too.” Masami Izumi stopped beside him. “Really, dad? I didn’t know that.” “Well, the first days were very hard for me. You were just a baby back then. But later I realized it wasn’t so bad. I made some friends I still carry to this day. Maybe the same thing will happen to you.” “Or maybe you’ll find love here.” Kae said with a smile. “Mom, I’m not looking for love, I’m sorry. I know how much you’d want this, but it’s not my priority right now.” “Ah I’d love to have a daughter-in-law. Even if you’re not looking for one, it can still happen.” “Son, I think it’s time for you to go in or you’ll be late for your first class.” “I don’t think I can move, dad. I might be wrong but this might have to do something with Koushiro and his parents, like when he said to human and digimon might be from his life or past in the human world. So naturally here I am thinking of a theory that may or may not happen

So I was hoping for a flashback or just a small tiny explanation on Koushiro's home life, but we got none of that which really disappointed me. But this scene could be a reference to his parents or home life,

So here I am taking a shot at what it might be. Considering that he was talking about the pain Garbagemon went through losing all of his Chuumon's, it could be a reference to how he lost his birth parents when he was a baby, or maybe he was actually a little bit older so he actually remembered them and the pain of their death.

Or he was actually mistreated by them and he was sent to a foster home where he now lives with Kae and Masami, who he hopefully eventually accepts them as his parents. Either way I just want Kae and Masami to be good parents and that Koushiro loves and accepts them. I always loved their family especially their little family moment in Digimon Adventure and I hope they don't ruin it here

2. Cooking headcanon

I think that Koushiro is reliant on his mother’s cooking fora long time. When Koushiro is researching by himself, then he’s liable to losetrack of time for meals, or else he’ll graze on unhealthy snacks. But Mrs.Izumi loves cooking for him, and Koushiro is always a dutifully grateful son.

Koushiro is very nervous when it’s time for him to move outfrom his parents’ apartment. Mrs. Izumi helps soothe his fears by giving himcooking lessons. This is valuable bonding time for them both, and Koushirobegins to feel more confident about living on his own, even though he stillthinks that his cooking is inferior to his mother’s. Koushiro keeps a notebookof handwritten recipes that his mother gave to him as a present.

6. Hugging headcanon

Koushiro is generally awkward with hugs. He doesn’t think ofhimself as an affectionate person. When he meets Taichi and Sora in thefootball club, he discovers that Taichi is a warm person who gives excellenthugs, while Sora’s hugs remind him of his mother. (Both Sora and his mother arekind people, but they both worry about whether their hugs even help Koushiro.)

Koushiro thinks that Taichi and Sora are the two coolestkids in the club, and they shouldn’t waste their hugs on him. But over time, asKoushiro learns to like himself better, he feels happier to receive hugs fromhis friends. Which is fortunate for him, because his new friend Mimi is moreaggressively affectionate than either Taichi or Sora, and she is constantlysurprising him with hugs in class!

9. General physicalcontact headcanon

Like I said, Koushiro isn’t a touchy-feely kind of person.He’s generally very respectful of people’s personal space. After all, there areplenty of times when he just wants to be left alone. And Koushiro doesn’t likebeing touched by strangers.

HOWEVER. Koushiro’s demeanor changes when he startsexplaining a fascinating topic. His voice becomes louder; he might wave hisnotebooks in your face; or he might grab your arm and drag you to see theresults on his computer. He might even hug you, and his grip is surprisingly strong.Koushiro’s friends live for these moments!

12. Jewelry headcanon

I’m afraid that I’m going to sound boring, but I think ofKoushiro as the least likely to wear jewelry. Maybe that’s because I don’t wearmuch jewelry myself! (I do think that other boys like jewelry, especiallyYamato.) Anyway, my vision for Koushiro’s style was always different from what Tri came up with. As in, I imagineKoushiro as someone who doesn’t worry too much about his appearance, and hedoesn’t try too hard. When he dresses nice, he dresses conservatively, becausethe only people he wants to impress are his parents.

But I want to say something more interesting about jewelry!

I think that Mr. and Mrs. Izumi give Koushiro his biologicalparents’ wedding rings. Koushiro puts the rings on a shelf where he can seethem, and during one emotional night he puts them both on his finger to try tofeel closer to them. He might decide to use the rings with his future spouse.:)

13. Nicknameheadcanon

I struggle with giving these characters nicknames infanfiction, because I’m not familiar with Japanese and the honorifics. I likecalling him Kou though.

Speaking of nicknames, I do like the dub nickname “Izzy”because it is THE SILLIEST NICKNAME EVER. I think it’s a suitable nickname forsomeone as quirky as Koushiro. And it rhymes with his classmate “Mimi,” whichis fun. On top of all that, it’s got the unintentional emotional consequencesof being a nickname of his adoptive parents’ surname.

My sister writes Taichi as calling him “Iz,” so my heartalways melts at that!

15. Singing headcanon

Koushiro isn’t a bad singer, but you will hear adifferent perspective on this topic when you read my birthday present for you.

However, Koushiro’s singing voice is timid. He can be sweetto listen to, but he’s quiet. Koushiro prefers to listen to his friends who areeither more talented or simply louder at singing.

This changes when Koushiro adopts his daughter, and hestarts singing lullabies for her. Then it doesn’t matter how quiet his singingvoice is, because it is exactly the right volume for her. Koushiro likessinging for his girl, and not really for anyone else.

16. Anger headcanon

It’s rare to see Koushiro angry, because he’s good atstaying calm under pressure. Koushiro is also pretty tolerant of his friendswhen they’re annoying. After all, he thinks that he can be pretty annoyinghimself.

If someone is bothering Koushiro when he’s trying toconcentrate, then he will tell that person to “Please go away, you’re being a nuisance.”When Koushiro is irritated or wants to be alone, he speaks with an odd mixtureof blunt honesty and habitual politeness.

In contrast, if Koushiro is actually trying to talk to afriend and they aren’t listening to him, then he might snap and lose histemper. He’s not a particularly aggressive person, but the sight is unusualenough to be unnerving.

17. Soft spotheadcanon

Koushiro has a huge soft spot for bugs! He never kills them.If he spots a spider in his kitchen, he’s likely to forget what he’s doing andstart observing how beautiful the tiny creature is. One time when he waslittle, his father swatted a fly and Koushiro burst into tears. Another time,Koushiro brought a giant beetle to his class for show-and-tell, which madestudents scream.

Most people dislike bugs, so Koushiro accepts that it’s justanother part of his personality that makes him weird. But honestly, bugs areeasier to understand than people most of the time.

Koushiro was delighted when Motimon evolved into the red robot-ladybugTentomon. His digimon partner could not have been more perfect.

18. Favoritepossession headcanon

I tried to think of a clever response, but I HAVE to go withhis laptop! It’s obvious because it’s true! Koushiro might update his Pineapplelaptop over the years, but he always keeps one on hand like an absolute nerd.Koushiro’s computer is so clearly important to his personality and to theoverall plot, that I’m not even sure what else to say!

At worst, Koushiro relies too much on computers so that hecan avoid talking to real people. I think there are days when he worries thathe is more like a robot than a human being.

However, when he goes to the Digital World, Koushiro learnsthat he can use his computer to help people and even save lives. His laptop suddenlygives him a higher purpose, and it even helps him connect to people.

And Koushiro’s laptop is a fountain of knowledge!

Awkward story time. So, I had begun writing chapter 13 of “The fantastic adventures of Takeru Takaishi” (AU story, kind of weird and difficult to explain the plot) and, after writing three pages of Koushiro angst, I realized that I had already sort of established in chapter 9 a different death for Mr. izumi, so... I couldn’t actually include this whole part in chapter 13 because it would contradict chapter 9.

But I already wrote the whole scene and can’t just erase it now. Well, I can, but I don’t want to. Anyway, if anyone wants some out of context AU Koushiro angst (and a bit of taishiro angst, maybe), I’ll just leave this here.

When he was fourteen years old, by his calculations, Koushiro had dreamed about Mr. Izumi riding his favorite horse, Thunder. Then, the horse got frightened by a snake... Mr. Izumi fell from the black horse, hitting his head on a nearby rock.

He woke up, shaking. Although he had been having nightmares like those every night since he had resurrected, that had been the first time it had involved someone he knew. Masami Izumi, the kind elderly man who, along with his wife, had allowed him to live in their farm since he was rescued from the ocean... Koushiro had just seen his death.

“Save the people you'll see be wronged. Show me that you're not another selfish human being.”

Justine's words echoes in his mind. He had to save him! But how? Koushiro had never told the Izumis about his past on Shrimp Island, about how his parents were killed and he fell from a cliff, much less about how he met Justine and gained the ability to see the future. He couldn't just tell them the truth, he couldn't... they wouldn't believe him... who would believe in such a story? Nevertheless, he had to do something!

That night, he went to the stable and freed that horse. Koushiro watched as the animal trotted towards the horizon. That should be enough. He had saved Mr. Izumi's life.

The next morning, Koushiro woke up to only find Mrs. Izumi at home.

“The Kurosawa boys came here earlier, they said they had seen Thunder on the open fields. Masami must've forgotten to close the stable last night,” she explained. “Masami went to retrieve him. He should be back soon.”

As dread filled him, he ran past the woman and left the house, not answering when she asked where he was going. No, please! No! Don't ride that horse, please! Koushiro begged, mentally. Maybe if he ran fast enough, he could find Mr. Izumi in time. He could still save him!

However, before Koushiro could take twenty steps, he saw old man Kurosawa coming in his direction, pulling his white horse by the saddle. On the horse's back lay the corpse of Mr Izumi.

As Mrs. Izumi screamed and ran towards her husband, Koushiro felt as if all his strength had left him.

“Masami was already on his way back with Thunder when the horse got scared by a snake,” old man Kurosawa told Mrs. Izumi. “It all happened too fast, there was nothing anyone could do... a true tragedy!”

He had done that... Koushiro was the one who had caused that... he had a vision of a tragedy he would be responsible for... in trying to save Mr. Izumi, Koushiro had killed him. Never, in his entire existence, had he felt despair like that.

The funeral took place that afternoon. Overridden by guilt, Koushiro remained silent the entire time, not responding to anyone. Not even Taichi's words, nor Hikari's, were able to reach him. Koushiro couldn't hear anything, he couldn't see anything. His mind kept replaying Mr. Izumi's death over and over again, and he kept repeating to himself: I killed him!

He wandered off, not noticing that Taichi and Hikari were following him. Until he felt someone pulling on him and pressing his body against the ground.

“WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING, YOU IDIOT!” Taichi cried, on his back; he was the one pining him down. It was when Koushiro looked ahead and noticed where he had been heading.

“I was... walking towards that cliff?” Koushiro asked no one in particular. “I was going to fall...”

Again.

Taichi turned Koushiro over to face him. The other was crying profusely.

“Don't you ever do this again! Don't you ever scare me like this again!” Taichi shouted. “Promise me you'll never do something like this again!”

“Mrs. Izumi can't be left alone now,” Hikari told Koushiro in a serious tone. “She already lost her husband, she can't lose you as well! If you don't think of yourself, then think of her! Do you want her to suffer more?”

Koushiro tried to speak, but found himself unable to. All his words were lost, replaced by grunts of guilt and desperation. He felt as his eyes got flooded by tears. There was nothing that could stop them from falling down.

Taichi sat up and pulled him up, to a tight hug.

“We're here for you! We'll always be here for you! You're not alone!” Taichi told him, trembling.

Hikari got close to Koushiro and whispered in his ear:

“What happened today was inevitable. It wasn't your fault. I know you were just trying to help him. He knows that too.”

After saying that, Hikari stepped back, showing Koushiro a sad smile. Hikari knew... he didn't know how, but she did. And she was telling him that what had happened hadn't been his fault. Hikari was mysteriously wise, she knew things nobody else could know. If she was telling him that, it had to be true.

“I'm sorry...” Koushiro said, hoping that Mr. Izumi could hear him. “I'm so sorry!”

Hikari held one of his hands and told him:

“You are forgiven.”

Just before they had moved to Odaiba, Koushiro had woken up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. His parents’ voices could be heard through the thin crack of the open door.

{The Novel indicates Koushiro’s flashback should have been Hikarigaoka, when Koushiro learnt about it.} [It is also possible Izumis simply brought all the furniture with them?] (But in that case, it wouldn’t have changed very much over those years, from the looks of it...)

“He was a distant relative of mine...” - Masami,

“...And a genius mathematician.”

(Note: According to the Novel, Koushiro’s biological mother was an assistant professor.) {Going by those details, it can be presumed they likely met through their professions.}

Koushiro’s real father, who was a distant relative of Masami Izumi, was a university lecturer and genius mathematician. His wife, Koushiro’s real mother, was an assistant professor, but despite having such a promising future, they died in a car accident almost right after Koushiro was born. Around the same time, the boy that had been born to the Izumi couple had died young from illness. When asked if they could take Koushiro, it was Yoshie who had accepted first.

Are we so sure Taichi would take Izumi as his name? Maybe Koushiro would take Yagami. Or maybe the two would just hyphenate their names

Ooh okay so to preface it’s just the way I’m personally going, but it doesn’t have to be the fandom collective or the only way even of course!! Everyone can have their own head canons / opinions!! I kind of stole the tag from @seventeenlovesthree who started a whole discussion on the last name stuff and I think came up with most of the following points in summary:

1) If you take Kizuna into consideration, Koushirou is already established in a business and has centered that around his last name and why that’s a big deal is:

2) Koushirou is taking pride in the last name of his adoptive family. He clearly views both his biological parents and his adopted parents as important figures in his life even though he has never met the former. They are all his parents and his adoptive parents view him as their real son (explicitly said in the character files)

3) Even if you don’t really consider Kizuna, Koushirou keeping the last name of the parent’s who raised him is just really sweet and Taichi being considerate of that is also a really sweet concept to consider. Also to the first point, Taichi isn’t as established at the same time Koushirou is, so it’s much easier for him to adapt to going into politics as, “Izumi Taichi.”

4) it’s absolutely hilarious to think of Koushirou going scarlet every time Taichi’s gotta introduce himself as “Izumi Taichi” at important functions and evens the playing field if you think of Taichi liking it when Koushirou just calls him, “Taichi.”

5) like if nothing else imagine Kae and Masami’s delight that Koushirou wants to keep their last name.

I do like the hyphen names in general, but I don’t think it’s as common practice in Japan so the discussion erred on the side of using one name and I liked a lot of the points, but that doesn’t mean it’s gotta jive with everyone and of course fandom can have various alternatives!! So there’s no pressure to conform if your opinions or feelings are different-- or change them up for different scenarios.

My Commentary: This A.M.V. showcases mostly Koushiro's Adoptee storyline, while also including brief scenes from 2020 eps that focused on Koushiro's inclusion or highlights. (There are a few tiny semi-spoilery segments from final battle of Digimon 2020 Episodes 66~67, but mainly show Koushiro.) There are no Tri, Kizuna, or The Beginning spoilers here. However, a finalized version may add in other moments later!

Extended Commentary: An A.M.V. I made in just under 2 hours, or, about an hour and 50 minutes total of editing, plus saving and review checks; as I aimed to finish just in time for: "Kou&Ten Day" a.k.a a "Koushiro & Tentomon Day" {Focus} (5/10, May 10) in the J.P.N fan base, the name comes from the "Kou" of Koushiro's J.P.N name, {Kou = Go = "Five" (5)} as pronounced in J.P.N + "Ten", a nickname for "Tentomon" partially given by Mrs. Izumi during "02" ("Tento-san") Koushiro fans often share Koushiro works on this day, including platonic works.

This particular work, specifically for Koushiro x Taichi, includes a Queer focus lens as the original song did. (Please be respectful if interacting on this work!)
