Hirano didn't make bullshit up. Mina was married to Arthur Holmwood in Horror of Dracula 1958 adaptation with Lee and Cushing, Hammer Horror classic. Hammer movies were very popular in Japan and Hirano was simply influenced by them as well. Or is Hammer Horror also bullshit?

At the risk of adding more salt to your shaker, yes, Hirano very much did make bullshit up in every direction, regardless of what he was influenced by. As did Hammer Horror, a classic branch of monster media that is likewise notorious for also very very much bullshitting on its merry way from Stoker's book. Entertaining bullshit! Some of that bullshit I enjoy! But it is still objectively bullshit.

Kohta Hirano's Hellsing starts bullshitting with the title alone, adding that extra L to Van Helsing's name for cool factor. Then he turns Dracula into a full blown eldritch horror sexy anime badass antihero/villain man bound to the bloodline of a suddenly occult-proficient megacool badassman Abraham van Hel(l)sing who opted to enslave and experiment on Dracula to make him an attack dog in a bondage gear suit and/or anachronistic Victorian costume to go vampire hunting on his family's orders (including eating nazis! definite plus!) and also the only reason Mina exists within the manga is to be said vampire nazis' fodder in creating more vampire nazis.

That's a fair bit of bullshit.

The only ounce of acknowledgment of the actual novel Dracula or its characters in the story comes from passing flickers of wildly OOC original creations that Hirano--like Hammer Horror and Castlevania and Browning and Coppola and Moffat and Newman and Moore and every other ~Bold and Subversive reimagining/retelling/revamp/spinoff~ writer and director since the early 19fucking00s--has simply stapled familiar names onto for the excuse of (also ONCE AGAIN) turning Dracula into Count Fuckman Superpower Supreme and Professor Van Hel(l)sing into THE ONLY VAMPIRE SLAYER GENIUS OCCULT MAN NEMESIS and Mina into The Girl (tm).

I don't have the background to know whether the Hammer Horror version of Dracula or other monsters had a big thing in Japan. On that I'll take your word for it. But even if it's true, the idea that Hirano was somehow only aware of the movies is false. He, at the very least, had to be aware of the book. Why?

Hirano either didn't take his own manga's advice, or he did, and actively chose to ignore 99.99% of everything in it.

However! To circle back to the inciting blurb about how the anime OVA's booklet crediting the guy hugging Mina as 'her husband Arthur Holmwood.' I think there's a good chance the people in charge of that booklet...may not have actually included Hirano or his direct input.

Because whoever decided that guy with Mina was Arthur not only didn't read the novel, but didn't read the actual manga.

Hirano bullshitted a lot. If Hammer Horror was part of his influence, fine--they were also actively bullshitting. Hirano was explicitly aware of the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker, and actively pole vaulted over it to do whatever he felt like.

The guys who did the booklet are Jared 19 and don't know how to read.

Just because you enjoy a piece of media, does not mean the parts of it that are bullshit stop being bullshit.
