Heartbreaking
FaceTiming from L.A. Friday, son Benjamin appeared to be fighting back tears as he talked about the things in his adopted city that he had loved and lost in the past 72 hours or so.
Various restaurants, shops and museums; homes of close friends; “Christmas Tree Lane” in Altedena, where residents have been going whole hog with their holiday displays since 1920 . All of it gone.
The destruction is breathtaking: 12,000 buildings lost. The death toll at 11 and bound to rise. Big chunks of sunny LA. turned into what one reporter called a “hellscape.”
Meanwhile, Lord Huron guitarist Tom Renaud posted the above photo and message.
Heartbreaking, indeed.

Max Emerson & Andrés Camilo’s Home Destroyed in LA Fires
Tumblr media
Max Emerson and his husband Andrés Camilo shared devastating news on Instagram: their home was completely destroyed in the recent Los Angeles fires.
In an emotional video, the couple recounted the traumatic event, explaining that while they were flying to Utah for a job, their house, along with most of their neighborhood, burned to the ground.
Beyond their personal grief, the couple highlighted the broader tragedy, reflecting on how their neighbors have been affected and grieving for the planet amidst the growing climate crisis.
Max Emerson and Andrés Camilo are known not only for their creative work but also for their activism and advocacy within the LGBTQ+ community.

We were finally allowed to return to our house, after nearly two weeks. I still don't know why it's standing, when so many thousands and thousands did not, but I won't deny hugging the door when I stepped inside. It's not habitable - no power, no water, no gas - and it will need to be professionally deep cleaned of ash and smoke. But it's a first step. My heart aches for my beautiful home and community.
I've had so many people--online and in person friends, people I talk to everyday, people I haven't talked in years - all calling, texting, messaging with variations of "Are you alright? I love you."
Thank you to the friends who walked me through the trauma - the hopes and manifestations for safety and well being. There's something about disasters that makes you want to grab every person in your life you have ever cared about and hold them tight and tell them you love them.
Here's hoping I can return some of that care and hope and love back into my communities at home and here. ❤️

I am moving soon and have a lot of extra clothes and some stuffed animals that are what I would consider nice. I would love to be able to donate them to people in need and being effected by the LA fires but it would have to be by mail. If you are someone, know someone, or know a trustworthy reliable place to send them to, please please let me know!

The Historic Toll of the L.A. Fires
The L.A. fires of 2025 still burn as I write this, though it appears that the worst has passed (knock wood). Dozens of my friends and colleagues live out there, actors, writers, critics, crew people, musicians, comedians, old schoolmates, ex-in-laws. It’s been harrowing to follow their anxious dispatches, and terrible to hear the stories. Our hearts are with everyone out there. Some friends, and…

Who will rebuild L.A. ...?
I’ll give Sharon credit for making this point long before it showed up in the media. but it’s worth repeating.
From CNN: “… the prospect of mass deportations under President Donald Trump’s second term could lead to the loss of construction workers … and stands to seriously hinder efforts to rebuild the more than 12,000 structures estimated to be destroyed by the fires.”
Rebuilding L.A. will, of course, be a long, arduous process.
“Key to that endeavor,” says CNN, ”are the mostly undocumented day laborers who often do the physically taxing and dangerous work of clearing the rubble after a natural disaster recedes.”

Los Angeles you are in my prayers
Lord,
Please protect everyone from harm.
Saint Florian, Patron of Firefighters, please protect everyone and the lands from flood and fire.
Especially those left without a home to go to.

Help Residents of Tongva/Chumash Territory (Los Angeles) Recover After Wildfires
The ethos of our company is this; building a better world, one game at a time. Please join us in donating directly to and sharing local L.A. organizations and residents if you have the means - so much of the community of L.A. that has been affected are not wealthy, and so many people have lost quite literally everything.
If you are not located in L.A. or don’t have the means to donate, please reach out to Governor Newsom’s office and demand a rent freeze. The effects of these fires will be felt long term for residents and ensuring that they aren’t taken advantage of during this difficult time should be our priority.
We have a list of places to start here:
MALAN Fire & Wind Storm Resources
K Town For All
L.A. Mutual Aid
Rebuild Black Altadena
Lastly, the majority of our team is also located in L.A. If you are also able to donate to our GFM, we would be incredibly grateful:
Help Oxtail Studios keep the lights on and make indie games
Remember - we take care of each other!

BOOOST TO MY FELLOW ANGELINOS!!!
Hey you know what sucks is predatory companies that make you enter your email address so that they can harass and advertise to you to access resources you might need to keep track of expenses after a disaster. So, uh, fuck them.
If you need to track the cost of things like hotel stays, pet kenneling, medical care, etc. after a disaster you can use this worksheet.
If you need to create an inventory of your home for an insurance claim (and if you'd like to do this to keep someplace safe before a disaster) you can use this worksheet (two pages, instructions on the first page, worksheet on the second).
And here's a FEMA document with numbers for disaster relief groups and a checklist of documents that you may need to have replaced as well as a description of what to do if you had cash in your home that was destroyed and can possibly be replaced.
