“True love is something else entirely. It is when the rest of the world goes quiet. It is not eyes that meet, but souls that dance – settle into each other – make room for each other, until there is nowhere else to hide.” - Kate Sharma

Seeing people clutch pearls over Arya having killed people is so funny cause the list is literally rapist, murderer, torturer, criminal, some combination of the bunch...and all people who Arya has personally witnessed, or directly heard about, committing these acts. Like, contrary to popular belief, she is not just a mindless killing machine.

can't believe I have to say this (can't believe I'm the one saying anything because I don't come here to talk) but THIS is not fucking okay. The use of segregationist imagery in the context of a joke is not funny or okay. There are replies to this post depicting a fountain for white people vs for people of color with a Black man using the "colored" fountain captioned "funny people" over one and "you" over the other. In what world is that a funny joke?

Your post about midwifing has me thinking about several things, including this one:
In humans, the midwife monitors the mother after giving birth as well as the newborn for at least a few days: height, weight, general health, etc.
And this makes me wonder if Midwife also had the role of monitoring eggs from time to time and also assess the health of the newly born hatchlings. It'd would likely be for less time than a human baby though, given how quickly a bug can develop by comparison - and thus be more independent from their parent(s).
So, those little Weavers roaming around Deepnest? Perhaps, possibly taken care of her shortly after hatching from their eggs, however long ago that was.
YESSSS HARD AGREE ON THAT ONE. I mean just look at how well centipede mothers take care of their broods- it kind of makes sense that one of them would help take up the role of caring for clutches in exchange for food, given that they're so good at tending to their own eggs. Which is likely the brunt of Midwife's work, as, like you said, once the baby hatches, really all she'd likely have to do is provide checkups to make sure that their weight is correct for their expected growth rate, or to soothe worried new mothers about their children. Eggs are the most vulnerable stage by far, and the ones that require the most careful care. Which makes centipedes ideal for that, because aint NOBODY gonna fuck with a super-fast, highly mobile venomous creature guarding a bunch of spider eggs
Tumblr media
I also like to think that Midwife would occasionally babysit if she had the time, though anything above a hatchling stage ran the risk of getting a warning nibble. Not that this was terrible for the young- if anything, it taught them to have quick reflexes and a gift of food on them at all times, which in turn increased their hunting skills, as Midwife would never turn down or scoff at any meal, no matter how measly. Keeps 'em on their toes, teaches them to respect their elders no matter their caste, and get some good hunting practice in. Hardly any downside to that

When I got on the coach the driver had not taken his seat, and I saw him talking with the landlady. They were evidently talking of me, for every now and then they looked at me, and some of the people who were sitting on the bench outside the door—which they call by a name meaning "word-bearer"—came and listened, and then looked at me, most of them pityingly.
She was the one who warned everyone else on the coach about what was going to happen to Jonathan, and probably asked them to drive as fast as possible to save him at least for tonight! I mean, I knew this already but I hadn't thought too deeply about it before, and now I am extra emotional.
When we started, the crowd round the inn door, which had by this time swelled to a considerable size, all made the sign of the cross and pointed two fingers towards me. With some difficulty I got a fellow-passenger to tell me what they meant; he would not answer at first, but on learning that I was English, he explained that it was a charm or guard against the evil eye.
Everyone nearby tried to guard him specifically before they left...!
One by one several of the passengers offered me gifts, which they pressed upon me with an earnestness which would take no denial; these were certainly of an odd and varied kind, but each was given in simple good faith, with a kindly word, and a blessing, and that strange mixture of fear-meaning movements which I had seen outside the hotel at Bistritz—the sign of the cross and the guard against the evil eye.
Everyone on the coach tried to protect Jonathan again. Just like the innkeeper's wife with her crucifix, they are giving up at least some of their own protections to do so. They didn't know about Jonathan until just before the ride, after all, so it's not like they had time to go fetch an extra from home or anything.
Sometimes the hills were so steep that, despite our driver's haste, the horses could only go slowly. I wished to get down and walk up them, as we do at home, but the driver would not hear of it. "No, no," he said; "you must not walk here; the dogs are too fierce"; and then he added, with what he evidently meant for grim pleasantry—for he looked round to catch the approving smile of the rest—"and you may have enough of such matters before you go to sleep."
The driver (and others smiling back) apparently have developed black humor pretty well. This appears to be a joke about how they all anticipate being menaced by Dracula's wolves. Possibly specifically with the thought that if they drive on without letting Jonathan get picked up, they'll be followed by the wolves - but as we saw, it turned out to be only Jonathan who had enough of such matters.
Everyone tried so, so hard to save him. They weren't able to confront Dracula directly of course, but they tried their best to avoid giving Jonathan up, at the very least on this of all nights. I can't imagine how ingrained the fear of disobeying Dracula must be to these people, yet they still did their best to try, if it meant saving an innocent person from his clutches.

one thing i do dislike about the ending of lady of the lake is how forgotten geralt and dandelion’s relationship feels at the very, very end. because although i accept, i even like, geralt’s despondence and emotional distance in ch. 11 and 12, which is not only warranted but realistic and flavorful…
i have a hard time believing dandelion’s numb response as geralt is dying. he says so very little. he sniffs, holds triss up, but otherwise says nothing. he muffles an exclamation of shock when ihuarraquax appears, and groans in awe. he is the first to move and place yennefer in the boat.
and his only words, last words he ever says in the series? “something has ended.” … dandelion, our eternally-blithe optimist, says the pessimistic part of the litany.
though, perhaps it’s like this: when a poet has nothing to say… that’s how you know it’s bad. dandelion NOT saying anything could in fact say more about his character than anything he could have possibly said in this scene.
