Duolingo alternatives
Duolingo’s been in the news for going all AI. Of course, if AI is your bag, that’s cool. But if you’re interested in learning language from resources made by real native speakers and humans…
Here are some suggestions…
Speaking/Listening
-Innovative Language (known for JapanesePod101, koreanclass101, spanishpod101 and their collection of 30+ language programs - teaches languages through conversations (you listen to a convo between two native speakers and then get it explained). Lessons are about 5–10 min on average in audio/video format https://www.innovativelanguage.com/online-language-courses
Pimsleur - similar approach as above but lessons are longer - 30 min and audio only - https://www.pimsleur.com
Reading
LingQ - learn by reading native content and breaking down the words inside. https://www.lingq.com/en/
ReadLang - a browser based tool that translates articles and books you read. https://readlang.com
Satori Reader - (for Japanese) - read level appropriate stories (my fav for reading)
Vocabulary
Anki - not sure if this needs extra explanation - most language learners love Anki’s flash card approach https://apps.ankiweb.net
Clozemaster - learn words in sentence context (instead of just words alone) https://www.clozemaster.com

Honestly I don’t trust a single one of you fuckers that are so “anti ai” when it comes to school assignments because look me in the eyes and tell me without lying that you’ve never used Google translate for a language class.
“Oh but it was only for one word” yeah, and? You still harass the fuck out of people for using Chat GPT for one word, what’s the difference?
“But how else am I meant to figure out the word?” DICTIONARIES!!!! They’re actually really useful, and if you can only get one word at a time, you’ll actually learn how to formulate sentences in the language!
“It’s not that big of a deal” YES IT IS!!! Google translate produces shitty, grammatically incorrect translations. It is god awful at nuance, colloquialisms, non-standardised language, and is actively harming your ability to form sentences in that language and your fluency.
“I only use it for pronunciation guides” THATS STILL BAD! Again, a machine cannot teach you how to speak! If you put a child in front of an AI that spoke to it 24/7, it wouldn’t learn language properly, you’d be arrested for child abuse! So how do you expect that to happen for you?
This is not me defending the use of AI academically, it’s quite the opposite. I’m just beyond tired of peoples blatant disregard for how harmful things like google translate are, and not looking at it like a form of AI that ruins how you learn the language just as much as using Chat GPT ruins your ability to learn how to write essays, or write anything on a certain subject.
A machine cannot ever be even remotely as good at translation as a human, because languages are such an innately human thing.

So, so disappointed and annoyed that duolingo has gotten rid of the option to practice for hearts and replaced it with only ads. If you're a learner and you mess up (which you know. It happens, you make mistakes. That's how you know you're learning and not just copying, and people have jobs and school and sicknesses and get tired or forget things between breaks) you have to watch 5 ads to get up to full hearts, and theyre quite long! And you have no other option really especially if the lesson is hard with the way the app is set up.
The practice for hearts option was something i really valued when i wanted a change of pace from learning difficult materials, or i was very sick and tired and just wanted to keep up my progress and streak or I knew i needed a general vocabulary refresh. It was practical and gave me more choice in using the app, and made losing all my hearts feel like addional motivation, rather than a gambling mechanic where I have to pay-to-win by sitting through 2 minutes of terrible mobile ads.
Plus, I believe they have changed hearts to regenerate much more slowly (I did my lesson about the same time yesterday, and I still only had 3 hearts! They should regenerate to full over the course of 24 hours at a MAXIMUM any longer is ridiculous!??? It's counterintuitive to the point of learning. So it puts you in a position when non paying users are almost guaranteed to have to watch at least 2 ads. I dont mind the preroll ads but and postroll ads. You know, I get that they're ultimately a business. But this is supposed to be an app where anybody, including students can quickly take 5 minutes to learn a language. If you count pre-roll and postroll and assume 2 ads minimum for hearts, you have to spend at least 5 minutes on ads alone. Thats DOUBLING your lesson time with something that adds no value.
I was already disappointed they'd removed (and seem to keep removing) mistake explanations, either getting rid of them entirely or locking them behind paywalls but. Man. This is a whole new level of low. I wish this company would treat its users with the level of respect and care they used to, rather than spending their money on advertising campaingns and publicity stunts their base users dont care about, and priorities app numbers and funelling people into the paid version rather than having a reliable, good product.
#duolingo#“just switch apps!”#I DONT WANT TO. I WANT THE SERVICE I USED AND GREW UP WITH AS A TEENAGER TO GO BACK TO HOW IT WAS!!#sorry its just man. langauges are something im really passionate about and im so sad to see such a beloved resourve get steadily worse and#worse as the people in charge show an increasing lack of care and prioritise money and numbers over their actual users and product#tw negative#cw negative#they used to be considered the best language app for a reason theres a reason they became synonymous with language learning. and what are-#they throwing it away for? cheap ai and a few extra bucks. cool#long post

My clan in Conan Exile on The Exiled rp server! A little self imposed character design challenge to do before learning about character design properly so I can compare after the semester!
(Outdated as we have new members! And I’ve met the ones that weren’t included in this one!)
Includes: (as their updated roles and not the roles they had in this image)
All characters are Aesir with variations of blonde hair and blue, green and brown eyes
Torvi: (she/her) the kind diplomat and one of the three healers. A badass hammer wielding diplomat and probably the friendliest of the clan.
Ragr/Morag Orupson: (he/him/they) the skittish scout and one of three healers. Adoptive son of the Jarl, he lives under the floorboards of the healers den.
Mari (she/her): the abrasive advisor. Former scout, Mari now stands by the side of the Jarl to advise. They don’t always see eyes to eye, but perhaps that’s why she’s the perfect advisor
Jarl Orup (he/him): the wise Jarl. Leader of Vita Vargar and a strong warrior. He feels he is not long for this world and is trying to leave a better world for his people before the worst may come to pass.
Kyrith (she/her) the strong hearted forge master. She is a kind soul who fiercely protects the people she loves and the things she believes in. A spitfire, hearth tender and forge master, everything about her is on fire!!
Ulffar (he/him) the poetic lawspeaker. The beloved bear of the clan, well respected and beloved by all. Closest in age to the Jarl and a trusted friend. He shares home with Ursa
Not included:
Sig’na (she/her) the mysterious Volva (VIKING WITCH/PRIESTESS), of the clan and former lover of the Jarl, she departed swiftly and quietly after receiving a grim vision from Ymir.
Ursa (she/her):the elusive Skald. With her strong words and her lovers poetic nature- you’d think their jobs opposite. But this strong woman is the Skald, writer of poems and stories. She spends much of her time in the wild enjoying solitude and the sounds of nature.
(LATER EDITIONS)
Torsten (he/him). The hearty captain of the guard. You’d be hard pressed to find someone as cheerful and as skilled with the blade as Toreston. He bares a striking resemblance to the Jarl! He is the husband of Frey’ja and recent addition to the clan but certainly no stranger.
Frey’ja (she/her): the beautiful healer. An elusive figure and the primary healer of the clan. She is a skilled tailor who can flawlessly stitch and sutar wounds with a smile alone that can heal the heart. She recently married Toreston and joined the clan alongside him.

I keep seeing people wondering why Jor-El's AI wasn't programmed to anticipate a langauge barrier and Clark not speaking Kryptonese.
Here's why this isn't a plot-hole or an oversight or anything like that.
Clark's bio-cousin Kara Zor-El is listed in the cast of characters over on wikipedia with a voice actor, meaning she's slated to appear sometime in season 1.
In nearly all portrayals, Kara is older than Clark, being in her young-to-mid teens when Krypton went kaboom. But shenanigans happen and she arrives on Earth still the same age as when she left Krypton and Clark is already an adult. In the 2015 Supergirl series, Kara was supposed to arrive on Earth alongside Clark and help raise him (obviously, that didn't happen).
HOWEVER, if the MAWS writers borrowed that aspect from 2015 Supergirl, then Jor-El really did expect Clark to know Kryptonese because Kara would have taught her cousin the language. What he didn't anticipate was Kara never arriving.
#so the ai is extra sad bc kara isn't there#and clark has no connection whatsoever#my adventures with superman

it’s really not understood how much having dyscalculia can limit you in life, especially as an adult.
most of the decent paying degrees & jobs require a good amount/a lot of math, so i’m out for that. when people even speak about going into high paying fields like mathematics, medicine, engineering, science etc it’s over for you before it even started. a lot of the time (but not most) people with dyscalculia can have an efficiency or interest in humanities or writing based subjects (eg literature, art, english, langauge, history, philosophy etc). i don’t think i even need to say it, but such degrees and industries are not known for paying well or even decently, and they are underfunded. it can be difficult to achieve jobs in these fields especially, more so than STEM fields. not to mention that at the moment, the job market is complete ass, and it will be even more so in the future (debatably because of the rise of AI), especially for humanities subjects. so that is out of the picture for me.
not to mention the shame and embarrassment socially due to having dyscalculia. being good a math is a huge signifier of intelligence, so having dyscalculia will put me at a disadvantage. yes, math is widely hated by people because they are bad at it, but dyscalculia isn’t just being bad at math. it’s a disability. one that isn’t widely researched (understandably).
my brain is not wired like everyone else’s. it is incapable of understanding not just math on its own, but concepts essential to understanding math (e.g, recognising patterns, placing things in order).
this isn’t just limited to math either, dyscalculia can hinder us when needing to do basic tasks. some common symptoms/signifiers are: difficulty remembering directions, numbers (phone numbers, pin codes), can struggle making change, budgeting, splitting bills (anything to do with finances basically), poor understanding is symbols/signs and sequencing events.
so chat am i like cooked

Do you have books in spanish?
I've found a couple! I'm less certain about the representation in these books because English and French are the only languages I can read, but these books are free and don't seem to be AI translations.
If you want to search for more books, I've had the best luck with the language filters on Smashwords. Amazon US won't always show me a language filter, and I can't find a langauge filter on itch.io books at all.
The books I've found are:
Vals triste y otros relatos by Violet Pollux - lesbian romance. If you like this one, the author has several other shorter stories and poems in Spanish available for free! (Smashwords)
Mujeres Sol, Hombres Luna by Juniper Sisi - fantasy book that uses magic as a metaphor for gender expression and trans identities (Smashwords)
Covers and blurbs are below the read-more

Hello hello hello
I figured with the ban, I would return to my roots yet again to be more active as my only current space here on tumblr for the time being. And now that you’re all aware, I do have concerns listed out will be specified with my art.
Q/A: What concern I will have over the newcoming community and the proship community.
-I will put first thing. I am not a lowly doxxer. I am not you as a content creator and we are not the same. Even if I do see your ship and it’s choice of implied rape/inbreeding, I will merely ignore for my own mental health’s sake. I only report what is outwardly obscene (like imagery of something illegal/bigoted) But I will never disclose names of accts as a newletter to my followers. And I will not bring harm to people when i have no real responsibility for their choices. Even if those choices and morals may not coincide with mine.
Q/A: what WILL your blogs have as far as warnings?
Warnings of some gore, suggestive themes, sensitive topics that I would best pin to squeamish minors under 18. Again, I do not have responsibility of what you can and cannot click. I can only warn that there will be langauge, artistic nudity, and at times sensitive subject matter. Its okay, not everyone likes guts ‘nweenies. The block button exists.
Also these guidelines are meant for this site ONLY. My rules change with the platform. My morals remain, but I will try to be as consistent as i can with potential language barriers. I have a feeling they may be more butchered as i learn.
Q/A: Can your work be shared?
Please do not repost my art on another platform without consent. Especially my original projects. The fanart ones I don’t own really anyway. AI has most likely cannibalized my style already for it to not matter by this point so… Whatever.
Which by the way no, I don’t use AI in anything but janitor. I am only a user to see my robotic competition, which, for all it’s worth, to be a whore and not for my actual writing. I suggest users to do the same to destroy its algorithm further.
Q/A: How have platform bans affected you?
If you must repost my art to a platform i cannot access due to my country (ie, TikTok and eventually Rednote/Xionshu) I would only ask that you leave my watermarks and source to avoid any orphaned content. I would like people to find ways to find me with a little digging.
I will be updating more links to new content that will be free to the public as I try to maneuver this strange new type of social media i have been given. And I would like to keep as many like minded people in my feeds as possible.
Thank you for reading thus far. I hope I have not deterred you from appreciating what goes about in my silly head. You are a star I tell ya.

19th's Steam Next Fest Impressions Oct 2024 Edition - Day 4
Day 1/Day 2/Day 3
KiNoKoe: Tree's Voice
youtube
A Japanese salaryman , after seeing a strange light in a public park, discovers strange and subtle symbols woven into the surrounding tree's bark. After visiting a shrine, he discovers that these symbols are a language, and the messages he decodes sends him on a trip across Japan.
It's got the relaxing vibe down, but the main problem is lack of puzzle variety. So far it's just been simple blackout puzzles, simple Witness-style line mazes, and laser redirection puzzles. Nothing actually puzzling yet. Even the tree langauge decoding is something done for you once you have enough symbols, so there's no conlang learning.
While the exploration is fun, your player character moves too slow. There's busses to fast travel with but the demo blocks them off for a good portion of the demo.
Keep Driving
youtube
A game about being a reckless teenager in the mid-90's and going on road-trips.
This game is mostly about managing resources: time, money, your car's durability, your gas, trunk space, your energy, etc. The game feels simple until it extremely isn't.
Once you set a route, you'll come across road events. while some are harmless or beneficial, such as getting a hitchhiker, most are hazards. When this happens, you're presented with a set of symbols, each a threat that will ding a different resource. You have skills that will remove threats, but each has their limits. It can cost a resource, it can have limited uses, it can only do a certain configuration of symbols (i.e. two energy drains side-by-side) and you feel both lucky and clever when you're able to clear them all in a turn. The game adds a nice gambling feature with the option to speed past obstacles. Can I clear this or do I cut my losses?
I only did two runs. The first I learned how easy it is to completely fuck yourself over (don't drink and drive kids, even if one of your hitchhikers gives you a quest to do so) and the 2nd one ended in a softlock on the map screen.
While I love the game's musical styling, it needs more songs. Hopefully the full release has a more varied soundtrack.
Mousebusters
youtube
You move into a new apartment, dirt cheap due to rumors of it being haunted. The next day, you wake up and discover you've been turned into a mouse. Another mouse comes up and tells you that you can turn back to human if you clear the apartment of the ghosts driving each inhabitant crazy.
You only have 1 "mission" in the demo, but I can imagine they will follow a similar structure. Since you're a mouse, you have to stealth around the tenants and find some way to move them away from the ghosts they can't see. Then you do a simple shooting minigame to get rid of them. The shooting minigame feels…prefunctory, and the first set of puzzles were kind of pathetically easy. But I can see them possibly scaling up.
Unfortunately we get very little of the game getting Extra Weird that we see in the trailer. But I'm expecting that to be latter half stuff. The Pixel art is beautiful, but that's to be expected from Odencat.
Rogue Flight
youtube
Star-Fox esque rail shooter with excellent presentation. After a rogue AI system decimates human civilization, desperate survivors stage a last ditch attack on its main core in space.
Impressed with the number of systems on display and how they interact with each other. The game has a chaining system, and aside from points, you get resources like lock-on missiles from maintaining a long chain. Said missiles can be used to easily start or bridge chains together, creating a self propelling system. You can hold back to vacuum up power ups without leaving your flight path, but it both leaves you vulnerable and could kill your chain. The "drift" system feels great, where you slow-mo and whip your ship around, treating it's rockets like a "whip" across the screen.
My main issue is difficulty. Of course, it's only first level, but right now it feels too easy. As in I was able to complete "extreme" difficulty on first try. And that's due to a single decision:
Instead of lives, you heave a singular health bar. Which, fine. 6 of one half a dozen of another. But maintaining a 4+ chain refills your health over time. I never felt in danger because I was constantly covering up my mistakes. I only felt the heat at the boss, due to being unable to maintain the chain there. That being said the trailer makes it look like later areas will have more pressure so, here's hoping.
Bugaboo Pocket
youtube
Pet raising game about bugs. Feed them, play minigames to earn food and decorations for them, try to raise for specific traits, pet them, so on and so forth.
I like the melancholy vibe of the whole project. You're an etymologist who was hired by a company "asking her to revitalize an already dead ecosystem." There was a massive fire caused by the company that she feels partially responsible for, since she didn't raise alarms about some bad practices.
Most importantly, it's not if your pet dies, but when. Your care can only take them so far.
There are even different systems to handle the dead: a collect-them-all system for pinning them and a system for maintaining a garden using their bodies as fertilizer.
That isn't to say this is all bummers. I can tell this is setup for a redemption story as the ecosystem is restored. But considering how often cozy games make the mistake of just staying in the heartfelt zone, this contrast feels refreshing.
My main problem is that the demo doesn't give you enough to do, so there's periods of just… sitting and waiting, doing the same mini-game over and over or petting the same bug over and over. But I assume that aspect improves once you're raising multiple bugs at once.

just dropping by to say how much i love your jacegan fic 🥺 i want to start writing my own fic but i've tried and every time i lose interest and finish it. i love how you give us such quick updates with barely any typos and a clean structure. what's your secret? do you use any tools like ai to write so fast? thank you!
Oh wow, first of all, thank you for the compliment! Second of all, do not, and I mean DO NOT, for any purpose use chatgpt, character.ai, or any large langauge models for your writing — just don't. It won't help your writing, it won't help you as a writer, and it won't help anyone alse.
To answer the question, I guess I'm a relatively quick writer because I've been writing for years and years now outside of fanfiction, so I have a process and the habit down pat, honed from creative writing workshops and the more rigid process of academic writing. With the process I have, half the entire project is basically done even before I post the first chapter.
My approach to writing is very similar to how most people draw and make visual art. You start with a rough and vague outline and then add the details in later steps. Outlining is a learned skill. For fanfiction, most free-write their work, but if I actually intend to finish anything more than 10k+ words, I need to have a plan and know where I'm heading. I really do recommend at least learning to outline, even if you are an intuitive writer who will end up mostly ignoring it.
Here's a rundown of my "steps" with examples taken from my current fic and a project that's still in the planning stages that I may or may not write:
#1: Outline the whole project
Plot the fic chapter by chapter, centering each chapter around one major event or info reveal. You can be as vague and messy as you want for this step since you're the only one who'll get to see your outline anyway.

#2: Outline the scenes you want per chapter
You don't need to list everything that'll happen at this stage. These are the key scenes that you daydream about while listening to music or taking a walk. You can picture these scenes on vivid 4k.

#3: Write summaries of each scene
I put each chapter into a seperate document with their key scenes already there. Here's the phase where you just start telling yourself the story. Again, this isn't meant to be read and seen by anyone but you. The goal is just to know how the events are connected and will play out. This is also the part where I do most of my research.
For example, under Chapter 4 - Jace Recovers, I wrote:
Jace wakes up in Driftmark/High Tide. Body aching, barely can move. [Research here how long it takes to heal from broken arm and medieval casts.] Sees himself in the mirror for the first time and doesn't recognize himself. Has as existential crisis but because he's Jace, he channels the dread into wanting to keep fighting.
This is very short since it's a scene with no dialogue, just one character, and just one major plot point. Some of my summaries are 10x longer, especially for things like trials, small council scenes, battles, and other big events.
#4: Actually start writing the prose
Because you've done step #3, you won't be staring at a blank document and actually know how everything will play out. Without having to worry about plot consistency or inaccuracies since you've ironed that out in the previous step, you can focus on just making these things sound evocative or beautiful or punchy or comforting or angsty or whatever mood you want to communicate with your prose. The summary that was 55 words ended up being 750+ words after this step, and I breezed through it in one sitting.
#5: Plug the prose into a text-to-speech program
I don't have a beta-reader so this is basically my beta-reading step. There are plenty of free TTS apps out there and any of them will do. The goal here is to catch typos, see which lines sound clunky, repetitive, or disjointed, and make corrections accordingly. I listen to my own writing while doing chores, walking, or any other mundane task, and I find it the most enjoyble part of this process because it fills me with such a sense of accomplishment having that sort of tangibility in hearing my work.
Just to clarify, this is the process that I've tailored for my own personal needs and preferences. Every writer is different — some need to have a mood board or reference images or find summarizing their chapters removes the joy of "discovering" as they write. All those methods are perfectly valid as long as they get you to actually put words other people can read on a page. But you can't discover your own personalized method unless you actually start writing. It will be slow earnings at first, but eventually you will craft it bit by bit through trial and error.
OTHER MISCELLANEOUS REASONS WHY I WRITE SO QUICKLY
My job is not emotionally or physically draining, so I have plenty of energy for creative pursuits. If you go home exhausted, don't force yourself to churn out words. If this starts feeling like a chore and not fun, that's your signal to rest and take a break.
I write primarily on my mobile device. Because of this, I can write during downtimes and my commutes. There are some writers who have to be in front of a desk, but I recommend at least trying it on your phone just to see if it works for you.
If I don't want to write about it, then I don't. Don't ever feel like you have to write about anything if you don't want to. If there's a big battle that happens but you get bored writing action? Just tell the readers it happened in one or two sentences — no need to devote a whole scene or chapter to it if it doesn't excite you. Same with time passing and travel. You don't have to fill the page with paragraphs explaining what the characters did if you just want to get them from point A to B. If it isn't fun to write about, then your readers most likely won't have fun reading it either.
I don't care if it's not the best that I can do. Often, I do think I could have written certain things better and added more. But eh, it's fanfiction. It's a hobby. The fact that it exists and I created something is already an accomplishment and the desire to endlessly finetune gets in the way of that.
I have a community of fellow fanfic writers I can bounce ideas off of. Honestly, I got lucky with this one and just got invited to random server one day. But you can usually find discord servers with fellow fanfic writers linked in your fandom's subreddit.
I don't have twitter, instagram, tiktok, or other social media time sinks that might distract me from my hobby. This one speaks for itself. Tumblr is really the only place you can find me.
Anyway, I think that's pretty much it. I suggest starting small with a one-shot or short story, and then expanding from there. Happy writing, and remember, the goal really is to just have fun and be proud you made something with your own two hands (so absolutely NO AI).

随感 #11 (Random Thoughts #11)
Today I spoke to my Chinese langauge exchange partner about AI and last week we spoke about MBTI. Our topics have become more and more complex and I do think this is a good thing for me since I've already achieved a certain level. However, these topics are really difficult to talk about in our respective languages because we use a lot of new words. There are times where I feel that my progress to a more advanced level of Chinese is quite slow as I sometimes feel that my Chinese is beyond terrible but I am to persevere and continue, as hey, at least I can use the words I've learnt studying for HSK5 😆
