The TikTok Migration to RedNote
On TikTok, I lurk, and now I'm lurking on RedNote. (I'm not searchable yet. Will let those interested know when that changes. Still figuring out the settings.)
A bunch of people got mad about the TikTok ban and decided that they would take their cookies and leave and go to an ACTUALLY Chinese app. I'm not sure why they picked RedNote rather than DouYin, but I think it was a good choice. I'm following other lolitas there mostly, because I don't need any Mandarin to like people's outfits. I did have a semester of Mandarin and am wondering how hard it would be to pick up some more, though, especially since I'm seeing all kinds of Americans from every imaginable background type doing so.
All over YouTube there are videos now of TikTokers on RedNote crying because we have been welcomed onto the app and treated kindly.
There is a lot of very expected anger about people discovering that no, in other countries it's not normal to pay more than half your paycheck for rent and half of what's left for food. Chinese people are saying that they thought it was government propaganda when they were told that Americans are expected to pay for ambulances, and healthcare, and that a $200 grocery bill for the week is not unusual.
I'm glad to see people getting radicalised about the class system in this country, but that's not actually the main thing I'm talking about in this post, though.
There are people who are deadass shocked that they haven't been insulted, trolled in a mean way, or been exposed to explicit unsolicited come-ons (there's one guy who posted shirtless selfies who is a little @@;; that he has 16000 gay male Chinese followers, but he's not getting spammed with raunchy photos).
So I value freedom of speech on political matters very highly, but there are two things I think are going on.
The first one is that yeah, a lot of Chinese people probably are better socialised than Americans, BUT
The second one is that Americans put up with a lot of shit in the name of freedom of speech that we shouldn't and after the changes on Meta last week I will only be using IG to communicate with Japanese brands and Facebook not at all, because they're going the other direction.
I think that if some chode did send me a nasty DM on RedNote and I reported it, something would be done about it. It's not that I don't think people will be nice and kind if they're not forced to be.
It's that chodes and Nazis and frankly racist and misogynist people will run everyone else off a platform if they are allowed to, and this app has somehow stopped that from happening, probably by not letting people be completely predatory bullies and assholes to one another.
English-language social media probably needs to stop letting people do that. It is not a violation of your free speech rights to tell someone they can't use a platform to be abusive.
I saw a video of a person of mixed race and unclockable gender who was wearing loose, oversized clothes sobbing because nobody was insulting them horribly, everyone who had commented on their post had been genuinely nice. Their experience of every other social media platform has been unchecked bullying everywhere. I don't know whether they'd ever been here, but we all know bullying does happen here, too, even if we're loads better than any of Meta's products.
People should not EXPECT to be viciously harassed every time they join a new site. That's horrible. It's also something I never really questioned before.
And I still think (always will) that you should be able to post any content that you want on AO3 in the works, but it's not okay to bully people in the comments.

TikTok is back (it’s not good anymore) and I’d love to hear your thoughts on the whole situation. It’s clear that it has been bought out and something much more sinister is going on.
well yeah, i’m not surprised at all. i did say in my original post that i fully believed tiktok would be brought back and wouldn’t be the same afterwards. i’m not sure if i believe that it’s already gone downhill in the last day—my fyp looks the exact same, so i think there may be a bit of conspiracy surrounding that. HOWEVER. i have fully believed for a long while that tiktok will eventually be sold out to american companies and information will start being suppressed. i’ve believed this since the first congress hearings a few years ago—and in fact, i do believe that tiktok began to change after those hearings. the algorithm changed to become more of an echo chamber, ads became more prominent, censorship ramped up, etc. for anyone with pattern recognition that’s been paying attention to the state of social media/the internet in general the last few years, i don’t think this is surprising in the slightest. this slow decline due to capitalizing online spaces has happened to youtube, instagram, etc.—apps that began as valuable community spaces and became overran with ads and hate speech. even tumblr, to some degree.
specifically going back to tiktok, i think it’s very clear that trump is trying (poorly) to orchestrate a move where he looks like the hero of free speech and make himself popular with young people at the same time. i say poorly, but it does still concern me, because apparently #thankyoutrump was trending on twitter today (though twitter is a cesspool anyway). i can only hope that anyone who already opposed trump wouldn’t be swayed by a move this flimsy. facebook has created their own tiktok page, so i think meta will be co-owning tiktok to some degree going forward, which will no doubt lead to a sharp decline in the app’s functionality and usability. i’m going to continue using it for now, but i do think we’ll have to move to a different platform going forward—likely not rednote, because i very strongly suspect that will be banned or bought out as well. a new app will pop up, and the cycle will start over again, like it always does, until something breaks or changes.
really, i am not the most apt political commentator—i just go by what i see and hear, and there are many more knowledgeable people than me. still, this is incredibly predictable and unsurprising. the only thing i’m really surprised by is that the ban didn’t even last a full day. but yeah, essentially, we’re going to have to move somewhere else eventually, or just use the app as best we can. keep the faith, stay hopeful🫡

To hell with it! So, TikTok is gone, RedNote is down, and Twitter is in flames. The question remains, what now? We’ve seen this all before…but not to this extent. The cultural impact of TikTok is not one to be taken lightly, and as I awaken freshly hungover with last nights makeup smeared all over, here I am at the ripe hour of breaking daylight, 5:30am PST, wondering, where do we go from here? Do we go back to our roots, the old internet? A sudden revival in subculture? Do we riot in the streets? Or do we innovate? Everyone’s grieving is unique to them and we should allow time for those to grieve, let them detox their short form content addictions, but the question remains. Was this all a rouse? Are we apart of some sort of social experiment or is it really all gone?
Introspective questions aside, my journey with posting on TikTok was quite short lived with my humble following of 22 strangers I started to grow quite fond of posting into the void of the internet. So why let the ban stop me? I hear the mutters and rumbles of “Oh great, another twink with internet access.” But like I said TO HELL WITH IT! My point remains, whether or not I make an impactful presence here on the internet or anywhere else I think my main desire is to be heard. I used to be so scared of the world to be perceived, judged, listened to but then I posted my first TikTok the adult swim trend of course but 2000 views and 350 likes later I deleted my account. Why? What was I so afraid of? Years later we get to December and the whispers of TikTok’s ban start becoming more of a conversation piece among most who frequented the app. So I started posting again, it was different this time. It was cathartic in a sense I was free. People agreed with my hot takes and got compliments on my makeup looks and I just thought to myself…damn I should’ve stuck with it.
But here we are now. I guess it’s never too late to start.

This is just a thought and an observation about my dash in particular today, but for all the lovely posts about warm welcomes and camaraderie Tik Tok refugees are finding over on Rednote, I’ve not really seen a single post yet on archiving Tik Tok videos for posterity, lest we lose almost everything a la Vine.
Plenty of other social media sites now accommodate Tik Tok-length videos of course, like YouTube’s Shorts for example, but not everyone has or wants a YouTube account. The closest I’ve seen so far to the concept of backing up Tik Tok videos onto another site is that Mark Zuckerberg is about to have a rather rude awakening when he discovers that no, not everyone wants to keep uploading their content to the shitty social media company that is so bad at managing data and misinformation they are literally responsible for political coups in India. What a concept, Mark; maybe not everyone wants to flock to or right back to Instagram’s Reels.
Yes, the fact that mass exoduses can and will happen is having CEOs pants-shittingly scared out of their wits, because at the heart of it the idea of social media and the internet in general being a thing to profit off of instead of the internet being a public utility has always been a flawed goose chase from the start, but that’s kind of a red herring here.
What will likely happen is that plenty of TikTokkers (is that a word?) will make copies of their videos and upload them to Red Book in much the same way plenty of artists re-uploaded their art to BlueSky once they migrated from Twitter. Plenty may find it economical to move to a third site as well, like YouTube, if only to expand their audience. Not everything is going to be saved from deletion and/or becoming inaccessible, so I do expect many of my reblogged posts of Tik Toks to become defunct as many of my reblogged posts from Vine have unless they’re sourced from a different site like YouTube. Tumblr is likely to eventually accommodate Red Book posts though, so hopefully we’ll see some excellent Tik Toks archived over there soon.
My point is that while it’s great to face the U.S. government’s ban of Tik Tok with mirth and spite rather than fear, I’m not really seeing any urgency from anyone on tumblr yet reminding folks to back up their Tik Tok videos. Some of that is the nature of tumblr being a different social media site entirely, yes, but if this ban can happen as soon as Sunday, now is the time for TikTokkers to back up as much data as possible. There may be a short window of time after next Sunday (01/19/2025) before the site gets cut off from everyone entirely, but there’s no guarantee how long it will last and I expect there will be more than a few lawsuits fighting the ban in the aftermath.
So yeah - just a friendly reminder to anyone on here with a Tik Tok account to please back up your content before the site goes down and/or becomes inaccessible if you haven’t already. There are now years’ worth of information at risk of being lost, everything from music videos to captured moments of police brutality to educational material. There are also plenty of videos with misinformation and less-than-tasteful content too, but the point still stands. If you have the means and know-how to archive your videos, now’s the time to do it.

I'm on Rednote as well. I went there with the rest of the Tiktok userbase this past weekend in light of the upcoming ban. I had no idea what to expect, or what the Chinese citizens on the app would think of all of us coming over. I honestly expected them to be... unhappy? Maybe a little peeved that a hoard of loud, brash, noisy Americans were invading their app. I knew painfully little about Chinese society, beyond what you see in American media, and a few things I've learned from watching Chinese dramas. None of which I knew was completely accurate. But I went in with an open mind, and a willingness to learn. I had no plans on posting. At least not until I understood more about the rules. (I didnt really expect to be allowed to stay, tbh.) But the response from almost all the Chinese users have been beyond amazing. They're so kind, and so welcoming, and so curious about us. Just as curious as we are about them, to be honest.
The posts of each side asking each other questions have been a true delight to read through. Seeing some of the assumptions they have about us, and reading their clarifications or corrections about our assumptions about them have been the most fascinating thing I've experienced all week. I've seen some that thought all americans were rich and had huge houses. That we love sweets. That we dont have to work very many hours, and/or many of us are lazy. Or that we live fantastical lives, buying anything we want from anywhere in the world. The assumptions a lot of americans have about chinese people have been just as silly or ridiculous or laughable as well, I'm sure. There are, of course, some Americans going on there making an ass of themselves and the rest of us, but for the most part, we're trying to be respectful and mindful of the fact that we are guests in their space. That Xiaohongshu (rednote/redbook) is, first and foremost, their app, not ours. And its gorgeous.
It seems neither side knows whats going to happen. If a digital wall is going to be put up between us; the international community, and Chinese citizens. (Because its not just the Americans going there. Our international friends have followed us. The WORLD is currently more connected than its ever been, all thanks to egotistical, fearmongering jackasses in the American government.) I've seen so many people on both sides express deep, sincere desire for our connectivity to continue, for our two governments to allow us this small bit of community and cultural exchange. Someone else on Tiktok, when talking about this, said this is the second time in the last 6 months that the whole world has agreed on something. The first was Luigi Mangione. The second is Xiaohongshu. We, as humans, desire community and connection so deeply. This connection we have is what we always should have been allowed. I hope others understand just how monumental this moment is. How beautiful it is.
Even if its fleeting, I hope people remember what this felt like. There's a sticker going around Xiaohongshu that says: "If there is really an uncontrollable factor that causes our contact to be cut off again, we must also remember the love and trust we have for each other at this moment, and in the future, if there are words that can defame each other, we can firmly say to ourselves in our hearts that what I see is not like this." We're bonding over cat pictures, and memes, even going so far as to translate our own respective memes so the other side can laugh with us. Forget language barriers, or time differences, or political divides. Translators make the language barrier little more than a minor inconvenience. Time differences are inconsequential, and political divides mean nothing to the everyday person. We're all human, and seeing both sides of the America/China conflict come together like this is one of the most beautiful things I've gotten to experience. Even if we are separated eventually, I have loved every moment of this, and I hope the world, and everyone who is here to see or experience it, never forgets it.
Y'all
Im not on tiktok and never have been, but I downloaded RedNote just to see what is up, and I am witnessing something truly amazing
The Chinese user community is giving the American tiktok refugees an overwhelmingly warm welcome, meanwhile the American users seem to have collectively agreed that not only will they not let the app be taken over with English and they will provide Mandarin subtitles for everything, they are LEARNING MANDARIN. Ive scrolled through so many videos of Americans offering greetings in Mandarin to try to acclimate to the new environment and be respectful, and speakers of both languages are posting lots of tutorials on language basics and internet slang in Mandarin
My God, there is an AMAZING outpouring of curiosity and delight among everyone to learn about each others cultures and daily lives. People are posting videos of landscapes, cities, towns, and natural areas in USA and China, posting recipes and traditional foods, vlogs of everyday life, and reaching out to find people with similar hobbies.
And it's not just young people! There are loads of videos from middle-aged American guys who have come to post about fishing or motorcycles and are now happily chatting with Chinese users sharing the same interests using Google translate
One American guy who was like. in his 60's had a comment on one of his videos that was like "Red Neck?" and he replied "Yes!" and I just about fucking lost it
Also the Chinese users love, and I mean LOVE, Luigi Mangione. He is apparently broadly adored in China. There is SO much fanart and SO many edits.
There are many threads initiating Chinese users to ask questions of American users about the USA, and vice versa, and everyone on both sides is clearing up a lot of misconceptions. Some of the questions I saw a lot from Chinese users were: "Is it true that American parents kick you out of the house as soon as you turn 18" (not often, but sometimes) "Do you all really wear shoes in bed" (NO!!! Apparently a lot of characters in American sitcoms are shown lying in bed with shoes on which I never noticed before!) and "are there really guns everywhere" (yes).
For the most part Chinese content creators seem just overwhelmed by the sudden influx of hundreds of followers that are super enthusiastic about what they're doing. A lot of them have made posts about how initially they thought the uptick in follower count was some kind of error, or that there was some kind of joke or prank, but then they realized the interest and enthusiasm was genuine and now they're welcoming all the newcomers.
I found several posts by Chinese users saying that this felt like a really profound historical moment, where these previously separated worlds are suddenly smashing together and suddenly there is freedom to learn about each other's cultures and connect. One of them said something along the lines of "This is a 21st century Tower of Babel and even though I'm an atheist I hope God lets this tower stand." OUGH MY HEART.
The app itself works a little bit like a video-based version of Pinterest. It's not really my thing so I probably won't be on there long term but it's been amazing to see what's happening.

goodbye tiktok
It kinda bullshit how our government is so key to this so-called “protecting our data”. Yet they’re the ones who want our data of what we watch, what we buy, what sites we go to etc. they already got us in our google account, youtube, facebook, instagram, and twitter. But when an app like tik tok comes along and it out does the apps service of the existing apps. It wants it as part of their share, and when they don’t get it. They ban it and try to replicate it. We already got snips of it from youtube, facebook and instagram of their so called reel/shorts feature when in doubt it was ripped from tiktok. And they’re still not succeeding well on that platform.
I enjoy tiktok for what it is, yes it did have some flaws but it wasn’t much. Not like facebook from it horrible Aibots. What gets me the most is that the government truly shows its true colors of being what they are. Greedy, lying, anti-culture and religious cult mayhem. And when I say they’re so key to our personal online data, because that is where the money is. They would rather worry about that than trying to fix our economic system or anything that has to do with tiktok. Then shutting down online sex traffic, child porn being sold and hosted online, private hate groups that post of their targets of the people who they fear that could give people hope in the political government from the black community, lgbtqia community, latino community, and etc.
Our government would rather lie to us than tell us that the Chinese government is a communist country just like North Korea and russia. When in doubt, our government is the ones who are the communist when it comes to not wanting to tell us the truth of what is going on around the world. Another thing about tiktok, it shows what is going on around the world before the news could take it and try to make it something else while hiding the truth. That is also another reason why they wanna ban it, the exploration of the truth. I like it when some of these political senators and governors get exposed of their greed or lies that have been dug up from their past or how racist they’re. That is one of the things I love about tiktok.
What is crazy about all of this, the American government thought that tik tok would just sell it to them, but they’re not. They are just going to close it out and let it get banned, because they know if they sell. They’re going to gain the america data and thrash it out, not only america, but rest of the world who also used tiktok. And now when it closes down Sunday (1-20-25). The American government isn’t going to get what they want. Here is a fun fact. Almost all the political people who invested into meta aka facebook and instagram are now losing their stock share money that they invest into meta. And they’re not happy about it either!!! So fuck’em for investing something they they through they would gain once they ban tiktok.
I just wanna say, it was fun while it lasted. I will feel sorry for the content creators who used tiktok as their income. And I hope they bounce back on their feet Soon. Yeah, it's going to suck for them to use meta/google again but as long as they can make content for the entertainment side of things. I hope they do well. Then again, there is a rednote. I might sign up but I'm going to wait. I already deleted my twitter/x to jumpship onto bluesky which is very nice and safer. What it is, we the people will answer back to our government with our voices so they can know that they can’t control us or make us what we wanna do. It is our choice and our only choice not theirs. Tiktok helped me get through the day when covid-19 was at its worst time. But tiktok give us the light that help us to get threw while we help each other. Until then, goodbye tiktok and it was nice to have you around.

What is Going On?
Hey everyone,
This is my first actual post, and I never intended to dive into anything political. But with everything happening, I can’t stay quiet. The TikTok ban is more than just about an app, it’s a significant move toward restricting freedom of speech and controlling what we see, share, and say. It's about how quickly our First Amendment rights can be undermined. While many of us may turn to other platforms like Rednote (you can find me there as (deadgirl17) or even Lemon8, it’s important to reflect on the bigger picture. Yes, we technically have freedom of speech, but do we really have the freedom to choose? Let that sink in for a bit. President Biden recently came out and told us that the U.S. may shift toward an oligarchy. A system where a small group holds all the power. Such a shift could lead us down a dangerous path toward fascism if we don’t speak up. Sitting back and staying silent allows the government to walk all over us. They think we are dumb but they are wrong. The fact that they want to ban an app that connects us globally says a lot. It’s not just about TikTok, it’s about the control of information and silencing voices. As an American, I can’t help but fear about the direction we’re heading. For those who voted for a convicted felon, a leader based on promises of lowering prices on everyday goods, I hope you’re seeing the consequences of what you voted for. As Democrats and others tried to warn you but none of you listened. Many didn’t fully understand what they were voting for, only to regret it later. Googling things like, “Can I take my vote back?” or, “What is Obamacare?” (By the way, it’s officially called the Affordable Care Act and it provides essential health coverage, it’s the same thing as Obamacare.) Republicans say Obamacare to get you to turn against that. Also, Women’s rights are another casualty of these political decisions. The lack of respect for women in this country is awful especially when it comes to the right to choose. The government shouldn’t interfere in personal decisions like abortion. They don’t know how the women’s body works and they don’t know what’s best for them. The Republican style of abortion is pretty much waiting until an innocent life is in school before getting removed. Speaking of gun control, children are dying in schools, and yet our government focuses on banning apps instead of implementing laws to protect them. The government needs to prioritize implementing effective gun control laws to address the ongoing crisis of gun violence in schools. School should be a safe place for learning and growth, not a place of fear and terror. No child or parent should ever have to worry that a school day might be their last time together or that lives could be lost. It's heartbreaking and unacceptable. Then moving on to students like me who rely on financial aid to pursue an education and escape the poverty they grew up in. The thought of losing that support is heartbreaking and terrifying in a way. Without financial aid, many of us will face debt or have to abandon our dreams of a better future because they want to remove financial aid. Schools could even face closures if curriculums don’t align with narrow political agendas aka what Trump wants. On top of this, LGBTQ+ rights, such as gay marriage and transgender protections, are at risk. Trump being re-elected, can have the possibility of conflict or war, and we all need to be prepared for what could come. We’re at a pivotal moment. The government’s priorities are misaligned, and it’s up to us to speak out. Our voices matter. Let’s not allow fear or apathy to silence us.
