"As a Deaf man, Adam Munder has long been advocating for communication rights in a world that chiefly caters to hearing people.
The Intel software engineer and his wife — who is also Deaf — are often unable to use American Sign Language in daily interactions, instead defaulting to texting on a smartphone or passing a pen and paper back and forth with service workers, teachers, and lawyers.
It can make simple tasks, like ordering coffee, more complicated than it should be.
But there are life events that hold greater weight than a cup of coffee.
Recently, Munder and his wife took their daughter in for a doctor’s appointment — and no interpreter was available.
To their surprise, their doctor said: “It’s alright, we’ll just have your daughter interpret for you!” ...
That day at the doctor’s office came at the heels of a thousand frustrating interactions and miscommunications — and Munder is not isolated in his experience.
“Where I live in Arizona, there are more than 1.1 million individuals with a hearing loss,” Munder said, “and only about 400 licensed interpreters.”
In addition to being hard to find, interpreters are expensive. And texting and writing aren’t always practical options — they leave out the emotion, detail, and nuance of a spoken conversation.
ASL is a rich, complex language with its own grammar and culture; a subtle change in speed, direction, facial expression, or gesture can completely change the meaning and tone of a sign.
“Writing back and forth on paper and pen or using a smartphone to text is not equivalent to American Sign Language,” Munder emphasized. “The details and nuance that make us human are lost in both our personal and business conversations.”
His solution? An AI-powered platform called Omnibridge.
“My team has established this bridge between the Deaf world and the hearing world, bringing these worlds together without forcing one to adapt to the other,” Munder said.
Trained on thousands of signs, Omnibridge is engineered to transcribe spoken English and interpret sign language on screen in seconds...
“Our dream is that the technology will be available to everyone, everywhere,” Munder said. “I feel like three to four years from now, we're going to have an app on a phone. Our team has already started working on a cloud-based product, and we're hoping that will be an easy switch from cloud to mobile to an app.” ...
At its heart, Omnibridge is a testament to the positive capabilities of artificial intelligence. "
-via GoodGoodGood, October 25, 2024. More info below the cut!
To test an alpha version of his invention, Munder welcomed TED associate Hasiba Haq on stage.
“I want to show you how this could have changed my interaction at the doctor appointment, had this been available,” Munder said.
He went on to explain that the software would generate a bi-directional conversation, in which Munder’s signs would appear as blue text and spoken word would appear in gray.
At first, there was a brief hiccup on the TED stage. Haq, who was standing in as the doctor’s office receptionist, spoke — but the screen remained blank.
“I don’t believe this; this is the first time that AI has ever failed,” Munder joked, getting a big laugh from the crowd. “Thanks for your patience.”
After a quick reboot, they rolled with the punches and tried again.
Haq asked: “Hi, how’s it going?”
Her words popped up in blue.
Munder signed in reply: “I am good.”
His response popped up in gray.
Back and forth, they recreated the scene from the doctor’s office. But this time Munder retained his autonomy, and no one suggested a 7-year-old should play interpreter.
Munder’s TED debut and tech demonstration didn’t happen overnight — the engineer has been working on Omnibridge for over a decade.
“It takes a lot to build something like this,” Munder told Good Good Good in an exclusive interview, communicating with our team in ASL. “It couldn't just be one or two people. It takes a large team, a lot of resources, millions and millions of dollars to work on a project like this.”
After five years of pitching and research, Intel handpicked Munder’s team for a specialty training program. It was through that backing that Omnibridge began to truly take shape...
“Our dream is that the technology will be available to everyone, everywhere,” Munder said. “I feel like three to four years from now, we're going to have an app on a phone. Our team has already started working on a cloud-based product, and we're hoping that will be an easy switch from cloud to mobile to an app.”
In order to achieve that dream — of transposing their technology to a smartphone — Munder and his team have to play a bit of a waiting game. Today, their platform necessitates building the technology on a PC, with an AI engine.
“A lot of things don't have those AI PC types of chips,” Munder explained. “But as the technology evolves, we expect that smartphones will start to include AI engines. They'll start to include the capability in processing within smartphones. It will take time for the technology to catch up to it, and it probably won't need the power that we're requiring right now on a PC.”
At its heart, Omnibridge is a testament to the positive capabilities of artificial intelligence.
But it is more than a transcription service — it allows people to have face-to-face conversations with each other. There’s a world of difference between passing around a phone or pen and paper and looking someone in the eyes when you speak to them.
It also allows Deaf people to speak ASL directly, without doing the mental gymnastics of translating their words into English.
“For me, English is my second language,” Munder told Good Good Good. “So when I write in English, I have to think: How am I going to adjust the words? How am I going to write it just right so somebody can understand me? It takes me some time and effort, and it's hard for me to express myself actually in doing that. This technology allows someone to be able to express themselves in their native language.”
Ultimately, Munder said that Omnibridge is about “bringing humanity back” to these conversations.
“We’re changing the world through the power of AI, not just revolutionizing technology, but enhancing that human connection,” Munder said at the end of his TED Talk.
“It’s two languages,” he concluded, “signed and spoken, in one seamless conversation.”"

*insert neurotypical introduction here*
TIP FOR LEARNING SIGNS FROM A HEARING ASL STUDENT TO TAKE WITH A GRAIN OF SALT.
Ok, so what you will need for this is access to an ASL dictionary (I use Handspeak or Signing Savvy usually) and some text (I use Character ai, but you could use a lot of different things).
STEP 1: SELECT TEXT
How I do this: I open the Character ai website and choose a bot that I won't hate talking to (usually one with some type of story or plot as the first message [I like to use characters from the Riordanverse]). I usually write three to five (3–5) messages/ responses. The text I select might be the bot's first message/ prompt and my first message/ response. I might also select a song to translate the lyrics of, which really helps build my vocabulary.
EXAMPLE OF TEXT SELECTION:
Bot: Hi, there, how are you doing today?
User: I'm just swell, thank you for asking.
STEP 2: USE THE DICTIONARY
How I do this: I read the selected text, looking for any words or phrases I don't know/ remember how to sign. Let's say I forgot how to sign "hi" and "thank you."
This is optional, but sometimes I'll write down the signs I want to remember/know so I don't forget to look up anything (especially if I'm looking up more than one sign).
Then I'll open up the ASL dictionary of my choice, typing in "hi." I look at the sign, try signing it, and repeat the procedure until I sign it successfully (I use a mirror, as it helps me compare my signing with the dictionary's video entry). I do the same thing with the phrase "thank you."
STEP 3: PRACTICE SIGNING THE SELECTED TEXT
How I do this: Going back to the selected text, I try to sign it using ASL sentence structure. I might sign using a mirror or recording myself on my phone. The benefit of recording myself is that I can replay it to see potential mistakes or fumbles I made so I can correct them.
If you all have any tips, things to add, or things you think I could do differently or stop doing, please let me know. I would prefer it not be over Private Messaging so the entire community could learn from my screw ups (lol).
Again, I'm Hearing and a student, so I'm not exactly a professional/ expert on this stuff. However, I thought I'd share a helpful (to me, anyway) learning tool.
I hope you guys have a blessed time on your ASL learning journey. 🙃🤟

saying goodbye to my nearly-600-day streak
Tumblr media
the CEO of duolingo is actively replacing human workers with AI, at the expense of accuracy.
Tumblr media
canceling my super subscription. i am happy to pay for real creative work humans are doing. i want programmers and artists and language experts and educators to be employed. i’m paying for a service which is teaching me how to talk to other human beings. i’m *not* paying to talk to a computer that only “knows” how to generate a statistically average sentence from scraped data.
anyway to scratch my language learning itch i’m going to try my hand at ASL.

Ais headcanons pt 2 ! (Touchstarved)
GN reader - no warnings | Ais, my beloved. My brain won't stop thinking about him, there's so much to say omg ! I need to draw him this is serious :')
Tumblr media
+ Not really a headcanon but when I first saw Ais in the trailer I thought he would be a kinda pirate character :') don't make fun of me lmaouiadubgziu !! I really imagined our first encounter with him on the coast of the city/harbor and that his story would be based on pirate tales and marine legends. I'm still sticking to my idea that it would be fucking awesome to have Ais as a captain or something, traveling the seas and oceans with him and his crew. (let me dream) PIRATE AIS AU WHEN ????!!? (Helloooo sailor !!)
• Has really pretty hands for someone who fights so much ! Likes to be presentable in front of you.
• He's a simp in his own ways. Someone making a remark about how good looking you are, he's gonna brag "Damn right they are ! Look at them."
• If you're mixed or have unusual features for your ethnicity, he would try to guess your origins (and he's strangely good at it ?). And if you have a weird/rare mix it's even more fun to see him struggle a bit.
• Likes to share foods ! Please feed him, he loves it. He'll just watch your dish with insistance until you ask him "You want some ?" and lean opening his mouth. He'll gently make you taste his meal in return. You're his little sparrow after all, so of course he's gonna let you peck in his plate.
• If your gaze meets his, he'll wink casually. It's his way to say "Hi babe."
• Completely forgot to ad this in my last hc post but !! If you use ASL, he will learn just so he can talk with you. Teach him everything you know, he's a good student >:) And if you happen to know how to read lips, this man would be thrilled to learn how to do it ! I just know he'd love to spy on people's conversation and gossip with you hehehe
• When you guys go on a walk and see sparrows he's always saying stuff like "Look, your friends' saying hi !" "This one looks just like you, cute." or "Wonder who's the real little sparrow… Sure you're not an impostor hm ?"
• When he doesn't smoke, he smells like a mix of cloves, iodine, humid air & metal (you know what i mean ?)
• Ties up his hair in a little ponytail sometimes and it's the cutest thing ever !!!
• If you're sensitive to the smell of cigarette (I personally despise that shit), he'd be careful not to smoke near you or puff in your direction. Passive smoking is not an option ! When you tell him it's fine, he responds "I don't want to screw up your healthy lil lungs !" ↑ However if you take cigs too, he'll gladly share a smoke with you. Really likes to have a calm talk with you while you guys enjoy your stuff. (+ shotgun kiss grrr)
• If you trip on your feet or something while walking, no need to feel ashamed. He would simply do the same on purpose to reassure you and act like it's something casual. "Can't watch my feet either apparently :)" You can be clumsy around him, do not worry !
• We know he doesn't like easy fights and he's kinda into brats so… give him challenges. Dumb ones, hard ones whatever you want ! He needs adrenaline and what's better than a little dare. "Bet you can't climb that tree in less than twenty seconds !" "Oh yeah ? Don't be presumptuous, I'll show you." and there he goes, perching himself on a big branch.
• Related to that... You're a snarky little shit ? Good. He likes it. Be cocky with him, that's what he needs. Of course he loves your soft side but no bickering nor teasing would be boring. This man needs a challenge.
• Loves going on walks with you and his babies (soulless). He'd show you around, make you visit nice places you've never been to and you get to play with Princess + the rest of the pack ! Sometimes his destinations are a little perilous but it's worth the risk. Two whole hours walking in the mist to watch the sunset ? Okay let's go, handsome !
• You're a trans person ? Great. He is too. Now go makeout like the T4T couple you are. (My Ais is trans and I won't come back on this statement 🏃🏽‍♂️💨)
• Always rests his hand on your hip. Number one resting place, comfortable & perfect shape for it. Sometimes the touch feels almost ghosting against you, you wonder if you're imagining things. Please, do the same for him. His waist is literally snatched with that pretty belt of his, perfect place to put your hands on ! He would really appreciate.
• He's good with makeup. Let him put you some red eyeliner so you guys can match ;) Just imagine him holding your face gently while he's concentrated on making a cool pattern with the liner. "Don't move." "I'm trying sorry !" "Am I that distracting to you ?". He won't mind if you try some on him. Dark lipstick omg, he'll rock that shit !

Log 8.6-ASL/H, by Krrilli (Konith, Xeneath Prime/Xeneath VII, Sector 3 - Segment Alpha, '''-'--''-)
"Hello, carbon-based endoskeletal reader. You know how humanity has developed rudimentary adaptive learning algorithms (which they named artificial intelligence, AIs for short) much before becoming third stage spacefaring species.
As natural to other young races they have greatly integrated it into their technology over the last three centuries. I cannot stress how aberrant it is, but the Confederation allows it, so they have it. Most of their machines and complex systems utilize relatively rudimentary ALAs, ranging between type 3 (input -> built-in answer) and type 5 (can create new answers to new inputs based on built-in answers), but are unable to feel emotions or think. Like all ALAs.
It is however witnessed how humans cling to their adorable behavior of giving personification to objects and this extends to their AIs. I have witnessed myself two humans treating terminals as their own, "cuddling". I don't know if this is their term. a rifle before a training exercise, and even curse a vehicle's bloodline after it failed to pass through obstacles.
In one instance, however, I came to greatly disagree with the Confederation's categorizations of their ALAs. I was covering an Exorith invasion in one of their mining stations and I deeply believe to have witnessed an armored vehicle's cannon (which had failed minutes ago) fire again after a quick prayer from its operator.
Whether this phenomena was my bias, a psychic/methaphysical effect, a new biological matter manipulation trait, a hidden mechanism, ignorance, an unknown function in the machine, or sheer dumb luck is still under study. Close log."

Do you know any other languages (this is random lore question following)? And what languages do the characters know? I think Seb, Celeste & Gaby know Spanish canonically and Sadao Japanese But does the others? Painter would logically be able to learn every languages, being an AI, and Eve? She only knows English have lernt it in the lab or is there another? And Anzu?
I am not fluent in any languages but I do know Spanish and ASL. I can understand it better than I can speak it tho lol
Painter probably knows some languages because of his advance AI, lmao now I just want him to translate for one of them when they start to ramble in their other languages xD
As for Anzu she knows a lot of different languages because she’s a hitman so you gotta know your stuff. She had all that crammed in her brain at a young age.

20 questions for writers
I was tagged by @corrodedbisexual who is a kickass Steddie writer and you should check them out if you haven't already!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
45 although I have several dropping in June for Bangs (eek!)
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
419,731 - which is just bonkers.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Stranger Things, Marvel (Clint Barton centric) and Teen Wolf (I tripped and fell into that one but its just so good...fucking werewolves)
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Destroy the Silence (Drummer Steve) - Steddie
An Accidental Flogging - Steddie
The Second Worst Trip to Mordor Ever Taken - Steddie
Even Flowers Have Their Dangers - Steddie
Screw Todd, Steve's Her (His) Daddy Now - Steddie
5. Do you respond to comments?
Always. Once every three weeks or so, I go through and leave full, complete responses to every single one (It's where I've met some of my favorite peeps!)
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Angsty at the end?? Nah, I like my angst safely in the middle and I give it a nice landing in smut and laughter, thank you.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I mean, all of them? Endings are kind of my specialty - gotta stick the landing, you know? But in my Teen Wolf fic Somewhere Under the Rainbow it ends with a literal happy ending (not that kind you perv)
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Not yet but I don't write anything that would inspire hate (Hopefully?)
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Yes, yes I do. I really like consent and kink discussions and unlearning all the unhealthy shit society and our parents have dumped on all of us. And service Doms...because ❤️‍🔥
10. Do you write crossovers?
I have a problem with 80s movies and crossing them into fics. Gremlins, Dirty Dancing, etc. But like, just a little. My name is ARTAXLIVS, give me a break!
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I mean AI is out there fucking us all without our consent, right?
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I have one currently being translated (Destroy the Silence)
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I have not.
14. What's your all-time favorite ship?
Winterhawk probably - Clint Barton is just perfectly imperfect and Bucky Barnes is a growling bastard with a thing for idiots.
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you will?
Fuck my life - don't come for me but There's Something Wrong with Steve has been sitting at 2/4 chapters for like 9 months and I actually have the last two chapters written but there's just something not clicking so I haven't posted them. I will. I WILL.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Endings - as stated, characterization, story flow, cadence, dialogue, smut scenes, minimalist world building but not a lack of - I get a lot of comments from people who also have aphantasia (we can't picture things in our heads) and I think it's because I don't describe every stupid ass tree (Tolkien, I'm talking to you)
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Crippling self doubt
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Enh, you do you boo. When I write sign language or D/deaf culture for Clint, I touched base with someone fluent in ASL but I have access to that so...
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Marvel - Bucky Barnes/Clint Barton (Winterhawk, my loves)
20. Favorite fic you've written?
Pic a favorite? Blergh. I really love when people comment on Even Flowers Have Their Dangers because it's the biggest world building thing I've ever done (there's a DND-like battle scene!) But also, What if Clint Fell has a special place in my heart because I love bashful first time gay Steve and slutty Clint figuring it out during WW2.
***
Pretty sure i just did one of these 20 questions things a few months ago so I'm gonna no pressure tag the people I'm currently collabing on bangs with so I can learn more about them: @angeleyz4ever @rufferto9 and I don't think @eviscer-8 writes fanfic but they're a bookbinder so maybe they could tweak the questions which would be interesting!

2023 Wins
I am very bad at celebrating personal successes (big and small). I tend to simply think “oh well, it’s not that big of a deal, on to the next” instead of letting myself be proud. To combat that, this year I started a tab in my master work/life AirTable to document wins. Here are some of them:
Was nominated for a Daytime Emmy.
Did not check my email on vacation! (This is a big deal for me.)
Quit my WIRED gig to make space for other work (art, fiction, etc).
Joined an art studio to have more space and tools to make things.
Dropped art history class that I wasn’t loving instead of struggling through it.
Got a new book agent who I love.
Squatted 200 lbs. Deadlifted 265 lbs.
Was a Finalist for a Third Coast Award for Welcome to Vanguard Estates.
Had a really successful writing retreat.
Sent my book agent the first 50 pages of my in progress novel.
Sold a huge project I have been pitching for five years!!! (Fuck now I have to do it.)
Learned how to blow glass.
Made some art I’m genuinely proud of.
Hit my “one year of powerlifting regularly” mark.
Got rid of a bunch of old clothes that no longer fit me because now I am swole, and only felt medium bad about it.
Wrote first draft of a short story that I'm genuinely excited about.
Got a another short story optioned for TV development. (If you're a Time Traveler Club member you can read the story!)
Learned how to forage seaweed and identify lichens.
Started volunteering at Creative Growth and learning ASL.
Got really involved in my union, and helped to write our AI Platform.

I had to use ChatGPT for homework so I decided to see how easy it was to get fictional results.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It took me one question.
Being interested in American Sign Language, and living near the Canadian border, I already knew that a Canadian Sign Language doesn't exist, they use ASL, so I tested ChatGPT ("Can you tell me about Canadian sign language?") and received a bunch of bullshit.
When I asked where the information on CSL came from, it said "The information I provided about Canadian Sign Language (CSL) is based on general knowledge available up to my last knowledge update in September 2021. This knowledge was sourced from a variety of reputable academic and educational resources, books, websites, and publications related to sign languages, including Canadian Sign Language."
(I'm taking a 'Marketing of Information Services' course as part of my Masters of Library and Information Science, and we had to ask ChatGPT about marketing for homework because "AI is the future".)
HOWEVER
When I asked it to find a book based on what I remembered of the contents, it was able to compile a list of similar books (sadly not the book I remember from my childhood). When I asked it for recommendations for app games, it provided apps that exist, that fit my criteria. When I asked for books based on my numerous requests for apps, it did so. As a test, I asked for music artists whose work is similar to Neil Gaiman's stories, and it gave me a list, some of whom I already know and like.
SO
How the fuck do we learn for ourselves (and teach others) the types of tasks ChatGPT is good at, and the types of tasks that cause it to hallucinate?
