My Mind is Blown! 🤯 This AI Dyscalculia Test Gave Me a Shock Result - Is It Legit?! Need Your Help!

Okay, deep breath. I need to put something out there that’s been swirling around in my head for what feels like forever, and honestly, I could really use some collective wisdom. It’s about numbers. Math. Calculations. For me, they’ve always felt less like a tool and more like a confusing, slightly hostile foreign language I just can’t seem to master. Simple things – calculating tips, managing budgets, even just following sequential steps in a recipe sometimes – can leave my brain feeling scrambled and inadequate. For years, I just assumed I was "bad at math," maybe a bit slow, and tried to just… cope.

But lately, especially as I've gotten older, I've started wondering if there's more to it. I stumbled across the term "dyscalculia," and the more I read, the more a little lightbulb went off. It wasn't just about being bad at math; it was about the way my brain seems to process numbers, quantities, and spatial reasoning. It felt… validating, but also opened up a whole new can of worms: how do I know for sure?

My friend Jaz, who’s incredibly supportive and knows my struggles well, told me about a new online tool the other day, a dyscalculia test. She was excited about it because, apparently, this isn't just another online quiz. Its main selling point is that it uses AI analysis. According to Jaz, the AI is designed to look at your responses in the context of your age and maybe even your specific experiences, potentially picking up on nuances that a standard test might miss. This part really intrigued me, especially since I feel my difficulties have shifted over time.

So, I decided to take the plunge and actually did the test on the dyscalculiatest.com website. The process itself was interesting, asking questions that felt quite targeted. And the results... well, they definitely gave me pause. The report came back suggesting I show significant signs consistent with dyscalculia, highlighting particularly high scores in areas related to number sense and mathematical reasoning. It was quite detailed, and honestly, a bit overwhelming. Crucially, the AI-generated summary strongly recommended that I seek a comprehensive evaluation from a qualified professional, like an educational psychologist, for a formal diagnosis based on these high scores.

Now, while part of me feels seen, another part is flooded with doubt. Was this result accurate? Is the AI really picking up on genuine issues, or is it perhaps overly sensitive? This result has amplified my need to understand if this tool is truly reliable.

Because here’s the thing: we all know the established players, right? There’s the quiz offered by Exceptional Individuals and the self-test available on ADDITUDE magazine's website . These resources have been around, they're often recommended, and there's a certain comfort in familiarity. How would my results compare using those? Would they flag the same concerns, or paint a different picture entirely?

So, my dilemma is sharper now: Do I trust this potent result from the new, AI-powered test mentioned earlier? Is the AI analysis truly a game-changer, offering deeper, more personalized insights that led to this strong recommendation? Or should I rely more on the tried-and-true methods from Exceptional Individuals or ADDITUDE before taking the significant step (and cost) of seeking professional diagnosis based solely on this one AI test?

This is where I desperately need your help, and I'm reaching out not just to others who might be wondering the same thing, but also to those of you already diagnosed with dyscalculia and even qualified professionals (like educational psychologists, therapists, or specialists in learning differences) who might have insights. My own result from the dyscalculiatest.com site has made this less theoretical and more personal.

For those exploring or suspecting dyscalculia: Could you possibly try the test I mentioned (from dyscalculiatest.com) and also one (or both!) of the other tests from Exceptional Individuals or ADDITUDE?

For those already diagnosed: If you've used online screeners before or feel comfortable trying this new one, how does it compare to your experience or other tools you've encountered?

For professionals: What are your general thoughts on the role of AI in screening tools like this? How much weight should someone give an online test result, even one suggesting high scores, compared to a formal assessment?

Not sure if this is a manta ray but its cute.  I was given a tiny origami box with a sweet inside as a surprise from this same student a few weeks earlier and I told him I wanted to keep the box because it looked cute. He made me another box as seen here for teacher’s day.

Me - goes to the toilet and comes back Student: teacher! look at your table! what is that! Me: oh wow!! What is that! Student: *laughs* I made that for you. I folded the paper!

He’s been doing that with sweets ever since I started working with him. I think I’ll be documenting more from him.

The Dyslexia Debate

The following blog is inspired by the article: “IDA Responds to the ‘Dyslexia Debate’”published by the International Dyslexia Association.

I remember distinctly being in kindergarten and first grade constantly anxious, on guard, and finding excuses to go to the nurse. Though I’d always been a curious child and loved to learn new things, I hated school. I hated the potential for being called on, I hated that my classmates made fun of me, I hated being punished for not doing homework that I truly couldn’t do. Though I hated many aspects of daily life, I played along with the system enough to get by for a few years. Though, soon enough, my trick was discovered. 

I remember walking into my testing session and being asked if I knew why I was there. My response: “I’m just a dumb 2nd grader”. That is truly how I felt. I felt dumb for not being able to read, for getting stuck on math problems, for being confused in class, for being different from my peers. 

Following the testing session it soon came out that I was dyslexic. Unsurprisingly, I hated this too. But with time, I was able to accept that being dyslexic did not mean that I was dumb, but rather that I learned differently. It meant that like everyone else I had strengths and I had areas I could work on. The discovery of my dyslexia also meant that I was going to change schools so that I could be best supported. At first I did not like this plan, but eventually I was excited as I felt I would have a community in where I belonged and was understood. Though it took me about 10 years to fully embrace my dyslexia, I have been able to slowly accept myself for who I am and the strengths I have, while acknowledging the areas I need growth in. 

Fastforward---> 

I have graduated from college where I wrote my undergraduate thesis on the parent perspective of a dyslexia diagnosis. I have become involved in advocacy surrounding dyslexia. I have mentored younger dyslexic students. 

After graduating from college I began teaching Special Education in urban public schools and... BAM! No one uses the word “dyslexia” anymore but instead says “Specific Learning Disability”. What the HECK does that mean? It’s the least specific “specific” disability possible!! My students have no way to explain their learning difference, they struggle to identify what it is, they aren’t sure of their strengths. 

You may be wondering why this is. How does a word really make that much of a difference? 

It does! 

Without a way to “specifically” identify their learning difference, the perception of being dumb and less capable than their peers is confirmed, when it is not truly reality. When they are told their “Specific Learning Disability” is in reading, writing, and math, they feel hopeless. When teachers start by identifying areas of difficulty, that’s all kids hear. I can say this from being a student AND a teacher in these conversations. When it changes to “you have dyslexia, so there are some areas you are really good at, and there are some things that are more difficult for you” it COMPLETELY changes a chid’s (and parent’s) self-perception. 

I have no more strengths or intelligence than my students, all I had was a truly SPECIFIC word to identify with, a community to call on, and a difference I could learn about.
