I hope you never know how much i cried that day

"Just how long has it been??" You giggled as you twirled Zuko around in your arms. Something you had promised to do three years ago as you bid him goodbye.

Well much to his dismay at least.

"Only 3 years, 5 months and 4 days" he said, you could only laugh in response because you weren't actually expecting a definite answer

Zuko looked embarassed not knowing if he gave the right answer, his awkward demeanor still holds up even to this day making an odd sense of comfort wash over you seeing how some parts of him still remains the same.

You guessed it was 3 years, 2 months and 4 days ago that you bid him goodbye. It was before he set sail for his banishment to a search for the avatar, like it was just another short adventure, you smiled and greet him like it was just an ordinary day at the palace. Like it will be a short trip he'll have to endure not for long. How awfully positive you were being gave him a sense of hope that the nightmare he will go through would eventually come to an end.

Your encouragement only fueled the ambition in his heart to burn brighter.

And the light would dim in your eyes watching him go. He may not see himself as talented or gifted. He told you that hard work and effort had made him strong. Though he fails to notice how he was always your light without even trying.

You wished you yourself believed your own words you said to him.

Because much to his knowledge you broke down only minutes after he left.

"Well it felt longer than that..."

You reminiced, trying to take in the moment. You're here on a mission once again in inner rings of Ba Sing Se when you saw him. You thought you were hallucinating again but upon closer inspection, you were right.

It is him.

Zuko. The banished prince of the fire nation. The fugitive. The honorless coward...

...

..Your best friend.

The sentimentality of this moment bear weight heavier than you could ever hold. Though he knows you'd never admit that

"Really? Lee? You can't be more creative than that?" you try to tease him once more

"So? There's thousands of Lees here in Ba Sing Se"

"You look more like a Chen to me"

"Well you're 4 weeks too late to tell me that" he rolled his eyes, looking away slightly. But not enough to hide the smile that had adorned his face

It was more than meaningful to see him smile once more.

You thought after being scarred so horribly by his father. It would took you mountains of blood sweat and tears to see the corners of his lips turn upwards once more. But Zuko always proves you wrong

Because what you didn't realize and never would, you could always make him smile with just existing.

The chilling air blowed past the two of you, signalling for him to bring you somewhere else.

He took your hand leading you somewhere

"Come on, you have to meet uncle now that you're here"

"Did you and uncle Iroh actually opened a teashop??" You perked up, curious at the smell of jasmine tea that lingered from Zuko's apron.

You could always tell that it was one of uncle Iroh's dream to open his own teashop seeing how critical he always of every cup of tea you served to him. Saying how "every tea is to be brewed with perfection" Making those tea lectures that he would go on about much more yawning. But still, you always appreciate it knowing how those tea brewing lessons were how he kept you company in your visits everytime zuko's not around.

"I don't think it's that surprising"

Zuko then went on a rant on how some men who came in their previous workplace just started offering a job, a building AND an apartment in the inner rings of Ba Sing Se to uncle Iroh

The whole situation would only bring you to giggle at how silly it was. Silly, but a blessing nonetheless.

One thing of note was something has tremondously changed in Zuko, was it his more positive outlook? Or was it his more carefree demeanor. Lacking of the boiling desire to prove himself. Perhaps he has truly let go the way of only pleasing his father and just live?

It does bring contentment. But you can't help but feel sorrow washing you away. Because now you guessed he won't feel the need to come back. Come back home to his country....His rightful place as the heir to the thrown.....His coldblooded father.....His dead silent home...

Or perhaps you just wanted him to come back to you.

You were remembered the days at the palace where he'd eagerly lead you to take a look at something he had took intrest to. Whether it was baby turtleducks, a new gift by uncle Iroh or even a new firebending move he learnt.

"Heyyyy, slow down!" You'd whine, feeling him tug at your hand as he ran

"Come on! We're almost there." He'd say, you were always a little out of breath trying to catch up to him as his grip on your hand never faltered.

These detour wouldn't last long however knowing how people would look for him, cutting your moments short. But you never minded. No mattrr how frequent or how short these little quest last. You were just so happy being with him.

Though as you grew up you noticed these little detour would only lessen as years passed. It was understandable really you two were growing up after all and it wouldn't be appropriate for the prince of the fire nation to be holding hands with his childhood friend to show them daily mundane things.

And you yourself were far too prideful to ask him to do it again so you cherish the memories you already had in your heart.

Still.. you never thought you'd miss how the warm skin of his palm would brush again yours. The question along the lines of 'how long has it been' would echo once more in your head, feeling how rough his hand were now....Different to the smooth small hands of little Zuko.

But the warmth still remained the same.

You bit your lip and stayed silent hoping he doesn't notice the tears that was pooling in your eyes, blurring your vision as you heard him rant about his uncle's new teashop filling in the silence.

The cold air of the inner ring of Ba Sing Se suddenly felt warmer. The illuminated night was engulfed in a glaze of sunset hues as your steps on the concrete streets of Ba Sing Se would ring a sound akin to a smooth tiled floor

It was as if you were back at that damned palace again..

It's as if you were kids all over again.

Though this time you didn't have to worry about catching up to Zuko's pace.

Timeline: Set during OOTP (mentions of Harry and Cho’s canonical date on Valentine’s Day 1996)

Summary: After Harry’s failed date with Cho at Madam Puddifoot’s, he tells the reader and George all about it. They decide to check out the place for themselves.

Warnings: Brief mentions of sexual acts, no smut or detailed description. Friends to lovers. Just a big ball of fluff 🤍

"Ughr I'm telling you, it was awful," Harry groans as he throws himself onto the couch next to you in the Gryffindor common room. George, who is sat opposite you in a little armchair looks up from tinkering with his newest invention and gives Harry a look which tells him to carry on. Harry looks around to check no one is listening in before he continues. "It's that stupid teashop! She talked about Cedric the entire time, cried through most of it and when I briefly mentioned Hermione she stormed off and disappeared."

You and George's eyes met very briefly as you tried to stifle the giggles that were threatening to spill out of both of you at the awfulness of the story but you quickly recovered and tried to console Harry.

"It was probably just too soon mate, she probably felt guilty that she wanted to go out with you so soon after his death," you reasoned, earning a slight nod from Harry, who had listened to your opinion.

"Yeah but how long does she need?" George says with a tone to his voice you couldn't place.

"What, you think she can just get over it like that? If it were-." You began to say, only to cut yourself off sharpish when you realised what the next words out of your mouth would be. George gave you a strange look and Harry seemed to be completely oblivious as you carried on. "It's not the same for everyone, these things take time, especially when it was such a shock like that." Both boys silently agreed and we carried on talking about the whole debacle until Fred and Lee joined later on. Harry had described in excruciating detail the floof and frills of the tea house, with its chintzy furniture and outdated wallpaper that looked like a remnant from someone's great grandmothers house. The conversation quickly diverted as Fred began waffling about an idea for a new product that had piqued George's interest and had lost Harry's.

George tinkered with the project a little while longer whilst Fred talked you into designing new packaging for his new idea and drawing up a basic plan for how he wanted it to look. Only when Lee had fallen asleep and had slunk down and dribbled onto Fred's shoulder did you all declare that it was time for bed, seeing that the common room had been vacated by everyone else hours ago.

"I'll be up in a minute," George says, ushering his brother and a very sleepy Lee away. Fred pauses, waiting for you with an outstretched elbow for you to take but you also say you'd be up later with George so he shrugs and walks off to bed.

"So, Harry and Cho..." George says with a smirk, chuckling to himself. You had to giggle back, finally able to now that everyone had disappeared.

"Do you think she meant to take him there? Like, for the reason everyone else goes?" You asked, still laughing.

George looked up at you with confusion for a second, "what, for tea?"

"No you great oaf, it's where couples go when they want to be alone... away from the prying eyes of Hogwarts," you said with a wiggle of your eyebrows. George's eyebrows shot up high on his head at the information, clearly not knowing it was Hogwarts' number one make out spot.

"Go Cho," George says, his shoulders shaking with laughter, to which you snorted in reply.

"Do you think Madam Puddifoot knows that she's running a teen brothel? Or maybe a live sex show at least." George barks out a laugh that is much too loud for the current time and situation and you both fight to hold back your laughter.

"Probably, she is a Madame after all," George laughs with a shake of his head.

"Maybe she puts something in the tea," you joked, "you and Fred should get on that. Aphrodisiac all sorts," you said cheekily, alluding to the popular liquorice muggle sweets that Arthur was so fond of. He laughed again, finally putting down the invention and assortment of tools.

"Shall we go?" He asks.

You look at him completely dumbfounded at his question, shocked that he'd even ask. Reading your reaction, his eyes immediately shoot open and words fall from his mouth to recover, "I didn't mean like that! We should go tomorrow and scout the place out." You can almost make out a small blush settling on his cheeks and you laugh whilst nodding your head.

"It's a date, Weasley. Dress nice!" You smiled and walked over to him to hug him goodnight, something you had both done for years, before you climbed up the stairs toward your dormitory.

The next morning you dress nicely, choosing a cute skirt and sweater to wear as you prepare to meet George ready for tea. When you walk down the stairs from your dorm you see him sat there with a single flower in his hand. He looked so handsome in his blue floral shirt and nice chinos, apparently having listened to your warning of dressing nice.

He rises as soon as he sees you, smiling as you walk down the stairs and you have to remind yourself briefly that it's a fake date.

"You look really pretty," he says as he hands you the flower, causing you to blush as you smile shyly up at him.

"It's not going to squirt water is it?" You laugh, gesturing to the flower. He looks at you with a puzzled expression, clearly not getting the joke.

"It's a muggle thing, like a magic trick? They have flowers that squirt water, mostly clowns," you explain as his eyes widen.

"Muggles have magic tricks?" He asks in complete astonishment. You laugh, nodding as he continues to look amazed.

"You and Fred should sell some, when you open your shop," you chuckle as he leads you out of the common room and down the staircases.

"One eyed witch or regular walking?" You asked George, preparing how you were going to get to Hogsmeade.

He shoots you a little look before replying with a smirk, "regular, I'm not taking you down one eyed witch in your little skirt."

"God it's like Umbridge threw up in here," you commented as you sat at the intimately small table at Madam Puddifoot's tea shop, waiting fir tour tea to arrive, the hideous decor already making you feel claustrophobic.

"Yeah except there's less cats," George mutters, scrunching his face up as he looks around with a loom of utter repulsion.

The exterior of the tea shop should have been enough evidence that the inside was going to be as frilly and pretentious as it was with the powder pink windows and door frames but nothing could have prepared you for this.

There wasn't a single surface inside that wasn't covered in either powderpuff pink, florals or lace. Harry really was telling the truth. There were armoires filled with delicate China teacups and boxed teas that fit the aesthetic of the shop, China plates lined up on the walls alongside some truly hideous artwork of loved up couples and badly painted floral bouquets.

How this place had become a den of inequity you had no idea but there were subtle references to love all around; erotically named teas and treats, picture on the wall that seemed to blend into female silhouettes the longer you looked at it, even some of the cakes on display looked phallic.

You looked around at the couples that were clearly there on dates and had to stifle a laugh at the awkwardness of it all. Some couples looked like it was their first date and were sat awkwardly amongst the sea of people clearly much more comfortable and familiar with each other. Some of the boys looked painfully uncomfortable amongst the ostentatious decor, clearly having not chosen the venue of their date. Most couples however were more than comfortable, most of them glued to each other in one way or another.

Your tea was brought over and you thanked the waitress as you poured the tea for you and George. He hadn't said much since you walked in, more silently observing with an outright puzzled and disgusted expression that you couldn't help but chuckle at.

A few couples, particularly near the back were snogging, no doubt regulars on account of their knowledge to sit at the back and wrapped around the little cozy corners.

"Godric, he'll get lost if he gets any further down her throat," you whispered, laughing at a couple far off in the corner, nodding your head subtly towards them so that George could see. He immediately snorted after catching a glimpse of them, looking around to mock more of the patrons.

"How is this place getting couples riled up? It's like my great aunt Muriel's front lounge," George laughs, shaking his head in disbelief.

"Well it seems to be working regardless," you chuckle, taking a sip of your tea which was actually quite delicious.

"She's definitely getting fingered under the table," you whisper suddenly, nodding towards a couple in the back you and George had been mocking.

George immediately spits out his tea, eyes bulging at your blunt words making you laugh. He wipes down the front of his shirt as his eyes flick over to the couple in question and he quickly looks away from them realising you're probably right. His reaction was so cute that you couldn't help but laugh, seeing George Weasley shy was an incredibly rare occurrence and you were loving it.

"Cushion in the lap," you nod towards a guy on your left sat with a frilly, heart shaped velvet cushion placed in his lap, "might as well have a sign over his head saying 'I've got an erection," you laugh.

"Girls know this stuff?" George whisper-yells, eyes bugged wide, horrified that you'd apparently cracked guy code.

"Only the bad girls," you wink at him before taking another sip of your tea. You couldn't help but notice George begin to vividly blush, all the way up from his collar to the top of his hairline and you smiled sweetly up at him, finding his reaction entirely too endearing.

You both carried on making fun of the couples around you, happily sipping your tea as you enjoyed spending time with George. He'd become a little less bashful over the course of your visit and had began actively mocking the couples, pointing out particularly aggressive ones and making little quips.

When you walked up to the little counter, the waitress passed over your bill and you began reaching into your bag to pull out your little coin purse. At the same time, George reached into his pocket to pull out his own money but you quickly placed down your money and dragged him out of the tea shop before he could fight you on it.

"Why did you pay?" He asks, frowning as he looks over at you. You smiled sweetly if not a little sarcastically at him as you replied.

"My treat, for you being gentlemanly enough not to feel me up under the table," you joked.

"Not like I wasn't thinking about it," he mumbles, making you pause. His eyes widen at he realises he just said that out loud as you both stand frozen, looking at each other with shocked and surprised eyes. Usually you would have thought nothing of a comment like that coming from George, thinking he was simply teasing you but his reaction told you otherwise.

"What?"

"What?"

"You wanted, with me?" You said in utter shock, wanting him to clarify what he meant. He was blushing again, not as heavily as before but you could definitely detect a pinkness to his cheeks underneath his freckles.

"Yes," he says, looking up at you nervously.

You didn't think twice and immediately stepped forward, shyly pressing your lips to his. He began kissing you back a few seconds later, assuming the shock had settled and he reached delicately for your hip, holding you to him as he kissed you back.

When you pulled apart, you both smiled nervously at each other, letting out a little awkward chuckle at the sudden twist.

"I told you, she puts something in that tea!"

Fire Lord Zuko gets a report that The Blue Spirit and his companion are causing trouble, pulling scams, winning street fights, and generally making a ruckus.

From the description, Zuko immediately knows that it’s Sokka and Toph. He goes to handle this PERSONALLY, more than a little annoyed at them for dragging the Blue Spirit’s name through the mud.

He finds them only to discover Toph is the one pretending to be The Blue Spirit. Zuko asks in confusion who Sokka is supposed to be then, only for Sokka to enter in full PAINTED LADY cosplay. Perfect make up. Faux-femme voice. Hiding his chin-line behind a fan so he can come off dainty.

They bully Zuko into being Lee the Teashop Guy and joining their prank plans!

Mercifully, Katara eventually shows up and puts a stop to it.

Aw, ty, friend, "clay kids" is one of my more-fave things I've written. ❤️ Haven't worked on it in a bit, alas, but have an excerpt from the next chapter!

They don't find Jet. It's a big city, yeah, but there's only so many places he really goes in it. The fact that they can't track him down . . .

Smellerbee really, really doesn't like that fact. 

"Maybe he just went home," she says doubtfully, because that's the last place she can think of that they haven't checked. Lee doesn't say anything. He hasn't said much the whole search. He looks grim and frustrated and ready to snap. 

At least she definitely knows he likes Jet, she guesses. 

"He might have gotten sick or something?" she tries, although he definitely wasn't acting sick this morning. Not that Jet usually acts sick no matter how sick he actually is, but still. Smellerbee knows him well enough to know when he's not feeling well. 

"He never skips the teashop," Lee says tersely. 

"I know," Smellerbee sighs, because yeah, Jet probably would've gone there even if he were sick. He is . . . way too invested in Lee. To put it mildly. "Maybe he got stuck at a job. Or maybe Song needed him." 

"He was looking for that damn bison," Lee says. Smellerbee frowns. 

"Maybe he found it," she says skeptically. Lee gives her an incredulous look. "He might’ve! It's a big city. Lots of things could be here." 

"Including the Avatar," Lee says darkly. Smellerbee has never heard anyone spit the word like that, except maybe Jet after their plan with the damn dam blew up in their faces. 

"Apparently," she says. 

Lee looks angry. Lee looks angry a lot, so it’s not something new, but . . . 

“What’ve you got against the Avatar?” Smellerbee asks with a frown. She knows Jet’s problems with him, and she’s got problems of her own, but why the hell would Lee even care that the guy existed? Mostly just the people who expect him to fix everything do, and Lee really doesn’t strike her as that type. 

“Nothing,” Lee says flatly, which is a screamingly obvious lie. Smellerbee frowns again. That . . . is really weird. Okay, yeah, Lee’s three-quarters, but . . . 

He doesn’t know Aang, does he? 

“He probably didn’t, anyway,” she says, still eyeing Lee a little skeptically. He doesn’t look any less upset. “It really is a big city.” 

“He’s such a damn idiot,” Lee bites off, clenching his fists. Smellerbee assumes he’s talking about Jet, but maybe he’s not. 

“Let’s try the apartment,” she says, deciding not to touch that one with a ten-foot pole. That’s a Jet kind of problem, whatever it is. That’s the most Jet kind of problem she’s ever seen. 

“Fine,” Lee says, and stalks past her. Smellerbee brings up the rear. She doesn't feel great about this, but she already wasn't feeling all that great about things, so whatever. They're looking for Jet, not a bison or an Avatar or anything else. That's really all she cares about. 

Jet’s been all she cared about more than once in her life, so at least it’s a familiar feeling.

Hmm, no one's really asked for my headcanons before... 🤔 Apologies if this runs long. It's mostly Jin's side of things too, since we know a lot about Zuko already.

Jin is technically a war refugee, but was too young to remember much about fleeing to Ba Sing Se. In her mind, she'd never truly lived anywhere else. She'd never met a firebender before "Li" (Lee?), and hadn't had any bad experiences with the Fire Nation (that she remembered) until Azula seized control of the city.

The one, short AtLA comic where Jin appeared is not canon to me; I don't think they saw each other again before the war ended. Jin was hurt by Zuko running off, so she stayed away from the teashop. When she had the courage to go back, "Li" and "Mushi" no longer worked there. She dated around a bit, had one or maybe 2 serious relationships, but always found herself comparing them to that one memorable date.

Jin found out who Zuko really was by seeing an illustration of his face on a news bulletin or announcement poster. This comic I drew happens.😆 Zuko convinces the Earth King to make the Firelight Fountain a protected landmark.

After they officially decide to date (unless you take the reunite as elders after a lifetime apart track), they keep it secret until having what amounts to a "vacation-only relationship" wears on them. Zuko then invites Jin to stay at the Fire Palace for a spell. She loves it, but struggles to be accepted by the Fire Nation upper-crust (she wins them over). As Fire Lady, I think her strengths would be: diplomacy (with the Earth Kingdom especially), supporting refugees and impoverished citizens, and helping the Fire Lord loosen up.

Jin takes on many different jobs across her young adult years, but eventually decides to become a ceramics artist. Zuko helps with her pieces sometimes.🔥

As a final aside, I don't ascribe to the "Jin is Mako and Bolin's grandmother" theory. For one, her name is Yin, not Jin, and remembering Jin's name is as easy as popping on Tales of Ba Sing Se. If the LoK production team truly intended for them to be the same person, there's no excuse for the name mix up. And secondly, being a wildly devoted Earth Kingdom royalist is not the future I'd prefer for Jin.

Weeks later you were on a ship on your way to Ba sing se,part of it felt too good to be true. It felt too easy,like a dream. You were lost in thought when you noticed someone walk upto Zuko,on instinct you stood next to him. The man introduced himself as Jet and the two other people with him as Smellerbee and Longshot,claiming to be a part of some group called the freedom fighters.

You had finally reached Ba sing se,the three of you started working at some tea shop. After one sip Iroh threw it out and took over making the tea. Soon after the teashop was filled with customers,and countless praises. Iroh was chatting with the owner,when the same man from the boat walked in.

"I'm tired of waiting! These three men are firebenders!" He shouted,pointing to the three of you. He drew his swords "I know they're firebenders, I saw the old man heating his tea!" He kept shouting.

"He works in a tea shop" One of the customers spoke

"He's a firebender! I'm telling you!" 

"Drop your swords, boy. Nice and easy" Jet moved closer.

"You'll have to defend yourself. Then everyone will know. Go ahead, show them what you can do" The customer who spoke,stood up and was about to draw his swords when Zuko grabbed them. 

"You want a show? I'll give you a show!"

After the fight Jet was dragged away by some elite guards called the Dai li,and you never saw him again. Everything was going well,the three of you kept living under fake identities and no one suspected anything. It was like any other day in the teashop when Zuko pulled you to the side.

“We have a problem.”Iroh moved closer to hear “One of the customers is onto us. Don't look now but there is a girl over there at the corner table.She knows we're Fire Nation.”You glanced up “Didn't I say don't look?!”

“You're right, Zuko. I've seen that girl in here quite a lot. Seems to me she has quite a little crush on you.” Iroh spoke,you stepped away not wanting to hear. Neither of you had said anything since your encounter with Azula.

“What?” 

“Thank you for the tea.” The girl said,handing Zuko money “What's your name?”  

“My name's Lee.”

“My name's Jin. Thank you and ... well, I was wondering if you would like to go out sometime.” She asked, leaving both you and Zuko shocked but before he could respond Iroh did.

“He'd love to!”

“Great. I'll meet you in front of the shop at sundown.” You were bewildered by that girl,the fact that she was the one who asked was incredible. 

“Something’s bothering you”Iroh said,not as a question but a statement.Your mind was spiraling what were you supposed to say,you couldn’t tell him that you wished Zuko was with you instead.

“I don’t wanna talk about it”

“That’s alright,i’ll always be here if you do.”He gave you a smile

A few days later Iroh was offered to open his own tea shop and move to the upper ring. He immediately accepted,you couldn’t remember the last time you saw him this happy. He was already planning and he had already suggested 40 different names. Zuko suddenly walked in

“How about the Jasmine Dragon? It's dramatic, poetic, has a nice ring to it.” Zuko held up a piece of paper

“The Avatar is here in Ba Sing Se and he's lost his bison.”

“We have a chance for a new life here.” You stood up “If you start stirring up trouble, we could lose all the good things that are happening for us.” 

“Good things that are happening for you! Have you ever thought that I want more from life than a nice apartment and a job serving tea?” Zuko raised his voice

“There is nothing wrong with a life of peace and prosperity. I suggest you think about what it is that you want from your life and why.”The last part made Zuko glance up and your eyes meet but he quickly looked away.

“I want my destiny.”

“What that means is up to you.”Zuko walked into another room

“I’m gonna talk to him” You walked into the room closing the door behind you. “Zuko, can I talk to you?” He sighed heavily and turned to face you. “Do you really want to go back?”You asked,moving closer. 

“Y/N i need to capture him,that’s the only way i could regain my honor”

“Zuko you have a decision to make,you don’t have to go back to chasing the avatar.”He avoided your eyes,but you put your hand on his cheek forcing him to look at you. “What do you want?”You felt his arm around you,pulling you closer.

“I want you”You pressed your lips against his.

When you woke up the next day both Iroh and Zuko were gone,just as you were about to head out to look for them when they walked in.

“Where did you go?”

“It’s a long story,I'll explain later,”Iroh said,Zuko was standing next to him. He looked almost pale.

“Zuko are you alright?”He looked dizzy and was stumbling a bit

“No,i don’t feel so good”You quickly caught him before he could fall.

“I know something that’ll help but i’m missing some ingredients”

“Go,I'll stay with him”Iroh nodded and was quickly on his way,leaving you alone with Zuko.

“Y/N”He said,his voice barely over a whisper “Are you angry at me?”

1. Where we last left off, Azula and Mai were fully brainwashed, while Ty Lee's particular combination of skills and talents at fooling people into thinking she is less than she is, has allowed her to hide that she has kept some of herself back. Her thoughts feel slow and strange, and she feels far too inclined to obey, but she is still Ty Lee, not something she can say for Azula and Mai. Long Feng, the head of the people that did this to them has been in to see them, and Ty Lee carefully kept herself standing and reacting like Azula and Mai the the time. He spoke in front of them, to his agents. He talked about using Azula to kill the Firelord. He talked about ending the war.

2. It's so strange to see Azula powerless. It's strange, unnatural, deeply, unfathomably wrong to see Mai and Azula without anything animating them, their personalities, their selves, gone. Azula's cool smirk is gone. Mai's face is the wrong kind of blank. But with Azula, it's more than that. Ty Lee has spent so long afraid of her, so long watching every tiny change in expression, so long running away from her that she hasn't felt quite human to her for a while. She's more than that, bigger, more perfect. But here she is, brought low, rendered powerless, and Ty Lee can't help but feel a sick kind of relief. So much so that she almost misses what Long Feng's agent asks next, what are they going to to about General Iroh and Prince Zuko.

3. It's hard, so hard, to keep her expression fixed, as they discuss how to bring them in without tipping them off, how to brainwash them, and for what purpose. When Long Feng leaves, his agent follows, and their voices grow softer and softer as the length of bare metal hall between them grows longer and longer. But Ty Lee has gleaned one thing, Iroh and Zuko are in the city, close by, in the upper ring. She needs to get out to them. When they're left alone with their guard, Ty Lee waits until he is close enough, then jabs him hard in the back of the neck. He drops like a stone. When the next guard comes on rotation, he sees the dropped guard and unlocks the cell door to check on them. Ty Lee ambushes him, chi-blocks him, and steals his keys before running as fast as she can up to the surface.

4. One frantic sprint through the palace gardens, and up over the walls later, and she's in the upper ring. She has to act fast. She has to get to them before Long Feng's men figure out what she heard. But one thought trickles through her slow, syrupy mind: she doesn't know where they are, just... Somewhere in the upper ring.

5. She's still dressed in the uniform of a Kyoshi Warrior, minus the face paint and armor. She uses that, and asks around, as a newcomer, where she can find the tea-loving old man who was so nice to her the other day. Soon she is directed to a teashop called the Jasmine Dragon. She walks right in the front door, and there's Zuko, serving tea. She runs over to him and seizes him in a hug. He yells and hot tea and ceramic shards go everywhere.

But Iroh is having a great time owning a teashop, and Zuko already ran off with a charismatic gambler from the SWT to find El Dorado, so the family reunion will have to wait.

Rating my list of Azula AUs by how much they appeal/are interesting to me now

It's a long list, and some of these ideas are actually quite old, so I thought it would be worth giving each AU idea a rating out of 10. Note that some of these aren't my ideas and I intend no disrespect to anyone. I just want to rate how interested I would be in a story if someone used the AU idea as a basis.

Better parenting Ursa (8/10)-Would be a banger.

Azula raises Katara AU (and continued) and more (9/10)-I've never seen anything quite like this and would be very interesting.

Azula and Katara get friendly postwar and talk about their brothers. (7/10)-Good idea for a short story?

Mai is significantly older than Azula and Ty Lee AU (Older “sister” Mai) (4/10)-Could be interesting but honestly I find canon Azula-Mai's dynamic plenty interesting on its own.

Jin works at Iroh’s teashop but finds out about his past (5/10)-Perhaps worth a shot.

Zuko tells Azula about the Spirit Water (5/10)-Too close to canon?

Ursa and Ozai get along better, and it’s not a good thing AU (4/10)-A little dark for my tastes.

Imperialist Lu Ten survives the war and tries to regain his throne afterwards (9/10)-Now that would be incredible. Lots and lots drama and lots of lighting fandom takes on fire.

Zuko finds out more about his nation AU. (5/10) Somewhat interesting.

Revolutionary Azula takes over Ba Sing Se AU. (2/10) In retrospect it feels a bit too imperialist in tone.

Three different AU ideas in one (4/10) None of them are really that great.

Favoritism in the royal family is a little different (5/10) moderately interesting.

What if Zuko had a nonbending twin sister (who he doesn’t get along with). (10/10) The Zola AU. One of the most interesting and subversive ideas I've had.

Zuko’s daughter changes how he sees Azula (7/10). Could be worth a short story.

Zuko and Ursa try to isolate Azula (“for her own good”) (9/10). Brilliant dark AU, very subversive of fandom expectations.

Ozai gets exiled and the Gaang stupidly ally with him (6/10). Could be entertaining.

Earth Kingdom ends up with custody of Azula postwar and support her bid for the Fire Nation throne when Zuko starts another war with them. (10/10). Pure, wonderful chaos and Team Avatar are really in a bind.

The Gaang tries to figure out why Zuko joined them. (3/10). Might make a good short story.

Dangerous Ladies find Ursa in Book 2. (10/10). Ursa setting canon of fire is always worth it.

Azula and Toph fake dating (1/10). Not that interested in Tophzula.

Zuko/“world leaders” try to force Aang to take away Azula’s bending and he’s very much not OK with it. (4/10). Not too interesting.

Azula is thrown away to the NWT postwar as a trinket and Chief Arnook adopts her. (9/10). Wonderful idea for how to get a fire sibling adopted by the water tribes and have it make sense.

Comics! Ursa’s letter about Zuko being a bastard gets out. (2/10). Too associated with the comics.

Zuko and Katara lie about what happened during the Agni Kai (4/10). Shrug.

An exiled Azula finds Fire Imperialist! Ursa postwar. (10/10) Absolute banger of an idea, although quite dark. Azula and Ursa unite to overthrow Zuko.

Aang has to save Azula from being executed by Zuko (5/10) OKish

Zuko’s defection during DoBS goes very badly for Mai (4/10)

Zuko joins the Gaang at Ba Sing Se, but it ends poorly (10/10) let's make the writers of all those bad Zvtara fics suffer!

Zuko killed Azula during the Agni Kai, and now he has to deal with the consequences. (6/10). Dark/

AU idea where Zuko keeps Azula permanently imprisoned in bad and torturous conditions postwar, and Izumi finds out about when she’s relatively young, and draws exactly the sort of conclusions about her parents that you would expect. Not to mention being terrified that she might be treated the same way if she missteps… (7/10). Could be interesting.

Ozai never declares Zuko and Iroh traitors (7/10). Clever idea, would destroy canon as we know it.

Iroh-Azula roleswap au (9/10). Would be absolutely incredible.

Zuko asks Azula for help with his firebending. (5/10). I really don't like the fire siblings having a good relationship very much at this point.

Zuko wants Azula to like him but doesn’t get why she doesn’t like him (postwar) (8/10). Good idea for a shorter fic.

Katara has an arranged marriage with Zuko and Azula tries to get into the good graces of her sister in law (7/10). Might be interesting.

“Katara is supposed to have an arranged marriage with Zuko, but she falls in love with Azula instead.” (10/10). No explanation needed.

Another take on Zvtara (arranged marriage) and Maizula. (6/10). Good idea but maybe a little boring.

Azula-Katara AU idea (or: Katara runs into an Azula who has changed a lot in some ways and not very much in others) (7/10). Never could quite gets this to work.

Zuko is actually Ikem’s son (2/10). Enough about the comics!

Firelord Azula ends her brother’s exile 3/10. Nothing particularly interesting.

Azula raises Izumi (it’s complicated) (8/10) Really would be worth engaging with.

“AU idea: Azula commits suicide out of despair, and just about everyone is convinced that Zuko had her murdered or at the very least “encouraged” her to do it.” (3/10). More Zuko angst.

Dangerous Ladies get banished/declared traitors and Azula basically gives up. Mai has to step up her place. (9/10), would be a very interesting look at Mai.

I have to say, “Zuko has to deal with finding out that Ursa very much isn’t who he believed she was” remains excellent fanfic fodder. (8/10). Ursa for the win!

“AU idea: Ursa is more aware of Ozai’s abuse and potential for abuse than in canon, so, right after her exile, she seeks out Iroh and charges him with protecting both of her children.” 6/10. I don't find like Iroh enough to really like an idea which had him be so central.

Firelord Iroh treats Azula in a really screwed up way. 9/10, very dark but could have great payoff.

“AU where Azula dies during the latter stages of the war or right after it, and Mai is the only person who ever morns her as a person, not as a politically convenient symbol (Ty Lee runs away from her complex feelings on Azula as much as she can).” 7/10, could be a good oneshot

Dark idea (5/10).

“Since so much of the fandom is convinced that Azula is Zuko’s older sister, I need an AU where this is true and Zuko is just as throne-obsessed as canon and spends all his time trying to usurp his older sister.” (1/10). Not really an idea which stands on its own.

“AU where Ozai has a heart attack and dies right after the fire siblings return to the Fire Nation, and Zuko and Azula have to pick up the pieces. Meanwhile, the Gaang are plotting to overthrow them and bring the war to a close once and for all…” 8/10. Could be a banger.

King Kuai adopts Azula as his heir 7/10. Interesting idea

Things get complicated, darkly (Azula exiled postwar AU) 6/10. A little convoluted.

What if Zuko tried to be a good brother 5/10. Zuko is boring.

“I really need an AU where Lu Ten returns and is pissed over Ozai’s usurpation, so he kills Ozai, seizes the throne, and continues the war. Of course, Iroh ends up supporting his actual son in all of this, and the conflict in the Fire Nation ends up boiling down to Zuko and Azula vs. Lu Ten and Iroh as the situation spirals toward civil war, at the same time the 100 years war continues.” 8/10. Nice chaotic edge.

“Maizula AU where Mai married Zuko, but he died not long after Izumi was born, and Azula and Mai are secretly carrying out a relationship while raising Izumi and ruling the Fire Nation as her regents.” 8/10. Maizula for the win. Could work as a short story.

Azula joins the Gaang with a twist… 7/10.

“The chaos which would result if Lu Ten showed up alive again in Book 1 and launched a rebellion against Ozai in pursuit of “his” throne.” (5/10). Less interesting than the other Lu Ten ideas.

Ursa opposes Firelord Zuko 7/10. More good Ursa content!

Iroh tries to kill Azula during “The Chase” (5/10). OKish.

Mai and Ty Lee on trial for “war crimes”“ and Azula has to save them 9/10, would be wonder with a great Maizulee dynamic.
