A little bit about me…
Far as online is concerned, I would be recognized as a muse-stricken fanfiction writer. I started writing fan fiction 23 years ago on fanfiction.net. The first work posted online was Party with the Old Fly-Boys, fandom was JAG and the ship was Harm/Mac, that was September of 2000. And it went from there… Over time, I wrote 100 pieces of work for 26 fandoms ranging from books, television and movies and 27 different ships’. Since, my works have been purged (found only on my inactive LiveJournal) because they no longer reflect me as a writer. For years I’ve been trying to get back on the saddle, but my muse only goes as far as the ideas. Soon as I try to transcribe to paper or type it, I draw a major blank. Writer’s block for the last two decades has been disheartening. I still try, leaving things in my drafts and such but I usually just end up deleting it all and starting completely over. Amazing how one can feel like they’re on top of the moon writing to not being able to muster even a drabble.
Outside of writing? I’m a full-time mom to 2 autistic sons. Wife to a marine veteran, Semper Fi and thank a veteran or active member for their service they will appreciate it. And to top that already full plate I am a full-time daughter to my mothers. If I’m not taking care of something to do with them then I’m dealing with the horde of animals, we have. 9 dogs and 18 cats we have strays coming in all the time. I basically run a rescue all on my own and with my own money (but not a legit rescue just FEELS like I’m running a rescue).
What do I love?
Yellowstone I don't know that I will finish watching this series after all the behind-the-scenes drama with Sheridan and Costner. I just don't think they can pull off a decent ending to a train wreck without Costner coming back. 1923 I can’t wait for season 2, I’m beginning to lean toward Spencer and Alex being the grandparents of John Dutton III in Yellowstone. Shame this series has the been the best of the Yellowstone Universe thus far. Outlander I'm going to finish the series out however it finishes but I'm drained with it. The way they have structured their last three or four seasons has been a rollercoaster, slow then rushed and it's took a lot of the joy out of watching. Reacher Season 3 still has Neagley coming back to do her usual bonding with Reacher so I will continue to tune in every season. Though I will say I liked the writing and pace in season 1 better than season 2. The Terminal List Looking forward to where this goes next season and I'm definitely looking forward to the spin-off for Taylor Kitsch. Stranger Things I resisted watching this show simply because everyone loved it and I didn't want to admit it was good. It is good, it's great even and I can't wait for the final chapter of this awesome constructed series. Reminds me how well the Babylon 5 series was. Marvel Cinematic Universe I have been a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since The Avengers. Since that moment I have been an avid MCU fan. I am not a comic fan or expert, the extent of my comic knowledge comes from the many other experts I have watched online talking about these incredible complex stories.
Who do I love?
Beth Dutton from Yellowstone. I relate to her in so many ways, like her no bullshit attitude and utter dying devotion to family. Where we differ, I don’t smoke cigarettes, I don’t drink alcohol anymore, and I would LOVE to own Yellowstone Dutton Ranch GLADLY. She hates it and would have no qualm selling it once her father passes but while he is alive, she will defend it to her last breath. Beth doesn’t let anyone scare her, she won’t let anyone get that satisfaction from her ever again since her mother died and since she lost the ability to have children. (side note: Beth has a shit ton of trauma from her childhood that contributes to her erratic often childish behavior when she lashes out, but I still love her it's what makes her the most human of them.)
Wanda Maximoff from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Most particularly in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and before you say anything let me explain. I have two sons, like Wanda did, and a husband, like Wanda did. And I imagine what it would be like to lose my husband and my children...the grief that would consume me would no doubt turn me evil, and I'm not using the word lightly. If I were in Wanda's position in Multiverse of Madness with that grief and guilt and the Darkhold in my possession anyone who stood in my way would be fucked, like the Illuminati. The only thing that would be able to stop me would be my boys, just like Wanda. And like Wanda, when she realized what she had become and how her own boys perceived her...it was enough to turn her away from the dark path and truly LOVE her sons...which is what I would hope I would do because I would only hope their love would be enough to bring me back from that place.
I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WANDA AND HER FULL REDEMPTION ARC COME TO PASS!!
SHE IS NOT DEAD.
SHE WILL GET HER OWN SOLO MOVIE BET IT WILL BE ANNOUNCED AT SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON! (update 8/6/24 - there was no announcement of anything related to Scarlet Witch at San Diego Comic-Con)
Why did I write and post this?
I managed to actually write it out fairly quick, so you damn right I’m posting it! May not be a story but its about me so I guess in a way it is a story.
Requests for stories and Asks welcome!

Listen...Naki is my ultimate fave in Zero-One, everyone fucking knows this. Dude I want to pin Naki to the wall and be pinned. You don't fucking expect this from them! And it's fucking GLORIOUS. This gentle suaveness and perhaps they take Boa's chin, caressing it like the licks of a pup to make her look at them (sure she's taller esp with her heels but...Naki likes it when they're the center of her world~) I want to do the same to Ikazuchi because I know that man will make the most wonderful of faces~ IkaBoa are both rather forward so Boa would def slam him against a wall-
Tumblr media
I legit fucking replayed this damn scene of the RealxTime movie over and over again because of this stupid scorpion. It's a smirk of confidence. It's a smirk that shows he isn't a alone anymore. He has a "family" "friends" and hoenstly...he has this confidence around him that makes me go HUIGHRSIUHUTR ya know
Anyway this is a face he makes when he knwos Boa is about to come wreck shit-
Tumblr media
THIS??? LOOK AT HOW HAPPY JIN IS??? I WANNA FUCKING GENTLY SMOOSH HIM AND KISS HIM- Like imagine him giving that kinda smile to Boa? How happy she makes him feel and just probably does things like rub their cheeks together and hUIHUGRSHR
🩷 for a headcanon about f/o.
Horobi: Horobi knits actually and he makes scarves for Boa. She's naturally has a rather low body temp and because of his Team Dad instincts, he worries about her a lot. He made one with their colors huifdhusgf
Naki: Naki has this affection towards dreamcatchers, and Boa got them one as a good luck charm. They kept it with them as they were being destroyed, clutching on to it tightly, refusing to let it go as their body burned...Boa found it in the rubble and picked it up.
Jin: One of favorite things to do with Boa is just walk around the city, hand in hand. He swings their conjoined palms oh so happily and hums, along to whatever song he heard that day. He's also a big cuddler bc he is so touch starved man
Ikazuchi: Has actively picked up Boa and chucked her at people during fights and vice versa. But he also likes scrapbooking with her.
Tumblr media
🙆 for something i can't stop thinking about.
................................. I can't stop thinking about how they all deserved fucking BETTER-
🌘 for something i love about f/o.
Horobi: How far he's come, how willing he is to make amends but also go down his own path, his own beliefs.
Naki: Surviving against all odds, it's beautiful how they found their dream and continues to live on. (esp in my heart), Naki is just...just...idk how to put it into words but like Naki is Naki.
Jin: He's so fucking cute what the fuck I want to smoosh he- Ikazuchi: he's just pure sex appeal Ika's brashness and his love for Subaru? It's very much like me and my lil bro so I adore him.

I wanna watch puss in boots but im not sure if its worth it yk😭😭
Well, I have an excuse to share this TikTok now! But, I'll give you a legit answer - it really is worth the watch.
EDIT: OH MY GOD, I didn't even realize that I went on about this, my bad. Everything is under the cut if you're interested, kinda spoilers for who the wolf really is but chances are that you already know.
I watched the first movie when it came out and while I sadly don't remember it too well, I can tell you that it was fun. A solid movie, nothing groundbreaking but still really fun and cute.
However, Puss in Boots 2 is a delight that I never saw coming.
Something I realized as I'm writing this is that there are a lot of characters in this movie, like, a lot. We have 3 sets of antagonists, Kitty Softpaws, Perrito and Puss himself and some side characters which we see as well. For most movies it's really difficult to develop just one character let alone this many but I have to give a shout out to the antagonists because geez, I love them all.
The Wolf is by far my favorite and I kind of regret being spoiled by social media of who he really is. His presence alone is so chilling, every time the guy is on screen the entire movie suddenly turns into a horror flick! What I also love is how not evil he is and let me explain that a little better.
Yes, he is Death but he ended up helping Puss in the long run. If it weren't for him Puss would have never realized that he already had everything he wanted and would have thrown it all away by making that wish. Death ended up giving him some "tough love" in a way. Sure, he openly enjoys hunting Puss but that is because Death has his own moral code and he sticks to it throughout the entire film. He is an antagonist but he is not a villain, not like Humpty. He reprimands Puss for wasting his life away but in the final battle when Puss realizes that there are indeed people waiting for him and that he has a chance to live a full and true life, Death no longer wishes to fight him. He instead turns his back and says something along the lines of "I shouldn't have played with my food!" and doesn't bother Puss anymore. After all, Death came to take a cocky little legend into the afterlife, not whoever this new Puss in Boots is. Death walks away like the legend that he is, while telling Puss that they will meet again no matter what happens and Puss accepts this. Just overall great writing for both Puss and Death!
Humpty is the true antagonist of the movie and he is hilarious. He's that kind of villain that's there for you to root for his downfall while also delivering some solid comedy while he is at it. He became even better when that green little cricket was with him, that's absolute gold right there.
Goldilocks and the three bears made me tear up, hah. They are I guess what you would say "redeemable villains" but I don't think that description fits them well, if anyone has anything better to add you are more than welcome to do so. This group is the perfect example of the "found family" trope and I am here for it, the ending was so so sweet and I just!! Loved it!!
I also must give a special shout out to Kitty and Perrito, those two are heroes in their own right! That scene in which Puss is having a panic attack and Perrito finds him and comforts him is just... He is a good boy, he deserves everything! And Kitty, oh my. She endured so much and still managed to come on top in the end is just amazing.
This movie really is perfect for the whole family. It doesn't talk down to kids about the more serious subject matters which it tackles but it's colorful and entertaining in the best way possible. Even the adults have something to look forward to because while the main target audience are children, it's still not childish, it's the perfect golden middle.
My only complaint would probably be that the ending felt a little rushed and that Puss's stay in that cat hotel felt a bit dragged out but other than that, I have nothing else to add. I'd rate this movie a 9.5/10, it's just a wonderful experience overall.

#4. 80's ski-movie villains
Tumblr media
I’ve been sick so gimme a break alright. I minored in Film Studies, I might make a James Bond podcast or I might not.
I dug into some older James Bond and my takeaway is this: watch For Your Eyes Only (1981). There are 27 movies and this one is better than a lot of them. The Roger Moore version of Bond has very little traction among viewers my age and in my region (though I might even extend that sentiment to most of North America in general). My parents definitely preferred things like Jaws (1975) and Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) as young adults to anything Bond-related. Moore’s Bond is sometimes called “The Gentleman Bond,” and while it’s hard to make the distinction when all the actors wear the tux, it’s in the way Moore embodies the rank and title of “Commander Bond” no other actor (so far) has. The man can smoke a cigar and you can buy into his upper-crust Britishness as a Naval-officer-turned-intelligence-agent. Moore’s and Sean Connery’s Bonds can both stroll into a casino and turn on the charm at the bar, although Connery’s Bond is more likely to corner and grope you in a barn.
The James Bond you grew up with is usually your Bond. For me it’s always been Brosnan. The fact that I was too young to have seen him in other films only cemented it in my brain by making him pop up in other things as “Hey look it’s James Bond!” going forward well beyond his tenure as 007. Daniel Craig had a film career before Bond, and I watched Connery in Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade (1989) and Entrapment (1999) long before I checked out Dr. No (1962). Licensed movie tie-in videogames were a huge part of the industry and had their heyday when Brosnan was Bond then legit died out partway through Craig’s run.
In retrospect, Brosnan gets a bad rap, but that’s because the movies he was in more or less let him down. His Bond achieved a harmonious blend of suave, pretty-boy Bond (Moore) and sweaty killer (Timothy Dalton, Craig). Maybe he was too pretty because a few years later we got Craig’s Bond brutally drowning bad guys in mop buckets.
I watched Moore in Live and Let Die (1973), The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), For Your Eyes Only, and Octopussy (1983). Most of his Bond films are less serious, rollicking adventure flicks. Not too far away from the Austin Powers takes on the genre. There’s a sequence in Octopussy where he dresses up as a clown to infiltrate an East German circus. Even in the more serious For Your Eyes Only there is a wild brawl between Bond and hockey players on the ice.
While The Spy Who Loved Me feels very much like an austere 70’s movie (it is one of Moore’s better outings as well) with fight scenes that look exaggerated like stage-fighting and sweeping large-scale shootouts that reminded me of old war movies like The Longest Day (1962), the jump to For Your Eyes Only was jarring. In a good way. The stunts feel dangerous and oftentimes spectacular, cuts are much quicker, and everything feels high-octane. The music pulses as bad guys rip through the ski resort dressed like 80’s jerks—very ski movie villain—except they have guns. It does feel as though this movie paved the way for so many of the action heavy hitters of that decade in terms of the action sequence.
It was also the most wrapped up in a Bond story I’ve ever been. Bond’s mission is not overly complicated: investigate a very bad man. His mission goes sideways when he crosses paths with a woman hellbent on revenge, and together they go from clue to clue, continent to continent, all while surviving various attempts on their lives. There is a twist and it blindsided me. I was 100% committed to the ride at that point.
Tumblr media
I never thought of Bond movies as fun until I watched these ones. Connery Bond films are more about sneaking around and spying, Dalton and Brosnan’s films are actiony, and Craig’s emotional and gritty, Casino Royale (2006) arguably a response to the backlash of Die Another Day’s (2002) over the top silliness, and the successful Jason Bourne style of espionage thriller that dominated the mid 2000s.
I’m not saying that the next Bond needs to go back to being laidback and humorous, but Moore’s films caught me at the right time in my life. I’m less self-serious than ever before and I’m tired of being miserable all the time. Most of the time I want something dumb and fun. I wouldn’t have had the temperament to laugh at the ridiculousness of some of it when I was in my teens. There is no film I ever wish I’d discovered sooner. There is only now and there is maybe tomorrow, and that suits me just fine. The more you mature, the more you appreciate.
That seems to be a running theme here, right?
PS: I also watched Never Say Never Again (1983). Connery came back and it's not part of the "official" Eon-produced films. It's pretty rad and also very 80's. There's a fight scene like something out of Indiana Jones.

This Week in BL
April 2021 Part 1
Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs.
Tumblr media
Ongoing Series - Thai
Second Chance Ep 1 - living up to its name since it looks to be a series of redemption arcs. Launched with a college confession and a broken friendship, then a flash back to them as seniors in high school. Pairings include friends to lovers, nerd/jock, and maybe cafe boss/employee. There’s a lot going on, but it’s still... quiet and sweet. The script is pretty pat but it’s still WAY more watchable than Cupid Coach or Brothers and most of the acting is solid. Ep 1 tropes included: he’s in engineering, wound tending, fast & bicurious. This could turn into what I wanted My Gear & Your Gown to be. Fingers crossed.
Love Poison 2 Ep 1 & 2 turns out I did watch and report on season 1 (8 eps), season 2 seems equally unmemorable. Thai countryside setting, strong dialect, incomprehensible plot, camp side characters, and ghastly singing.
Y-Destiny Ep 1 (eng subs?) - opened with the sports romance enemies to lovers (they aren’t going in the teaser order). When the couple got over fighting, the flirting was v cute, but the flipping SPONGE BATH trope had to rear its ugly head. Still, this series is shaping up to be less coy and more frank than most BL, better than expected. It feels, I don’t know, gay-er or something?  *** Sources were correct that each couple is getting (at least) 2 eps, and MDL has been updated to say this is a 15 episode series (not 7).
Cupid Coach 12 fin - The new Nite was great and should have been a main all along. It felt like we got a tiny nugget of what could have been in about 10 minutes worth of this last ep. It was way too slow with terrible editing and a criminally bad script, but at least it ended happy. Mostly, like Friend Forever, I’m just disappointed that these two actors were done dirty by the series. Bad Cupid Coach, no screen caps for you.
Lovely Writer Ep 6 - breaking news, there’s a het couple I like: toppy bi femme + soft boi = such a good pairing! I know, but this NEVER happens. Meanwhile, Sib’s secret is out, Gene is a bit of a drama queen, and the plot thickens. We half way through.
Brothers Ep 9 - Kaow had a serious moment of advice giving that was truly lovely. Lots of family dama made this a superior episode to... well... any of the others in this series. Which isn’t saying much.
1000 Stars Ep 10 fin - at the start this series didn’t grab me the way GMMTV’s last BL, Tonhon Chonlatee, did. But boy did it end 1000x better. Might have given us 2021′s best forehead kiss. I enjoyed the ultra romantic cliff-top reunion kiss, and I LOVED the stinger flirting scene. That was an absolute gift we had no right to expect. This drama is a poster child for finishing on a high note (always focus on that dessert course). Final thoughts? This was FAR more a classic romance than it was BL. There were some BL tropes used but not many and most of them originated in the romance genre not yaoi. A picture perfect ending bumped 1000 Stars much higher up my best-of list than expected. Not sure how often I’ll rewatch it as a whole, but this last episode? I’m probably rewatching it right now.
Tumblr media
Ongoing Series - Not Thai
Dear Uranus (Taiwan GL) Ep 3 fin - I guess that’s it? Okaaaaay
HIStory 4: Close To You (Taiwan) Ep 3 (AKA Ep 5-6) - we got actual legit gay culture not just BL (always appreciated) from XingSi. I’m starting to find LiCheng’s “show them we fucking” hijinks hilarious rather than annoying (not sure why, maybe I just love a rubber chicken, or maybe it was the STUFFED CORN WITH THE TASSEL that did it).
-- H4 Moment of RANT --
Tumblr media
Tropes included beach trip, there’s only one bed, cook for him, baby is a floppy drunk, carry baby to bed, and.... drunk non-con. Whoopdedoo. Here we go again. Did TharnType teach us NOTHING? (Apparently it taught us if the chemistry is good enough, I have no morals at all.) At least H4 seems to be taking us out of cheese into serious when it comes to assault. Or is it?
I take back what I said last weekabout XingSi & YongJie being codependency + salvation trope, that only works if YongJie is the uke. He’s NOT. So we got us an obsessive predatory villain with a possible redemption arc. That’s more common in crime dramas, mafia romance, and epic fantasy than BL. It’s real hard to redeem a sexual predator in a reality-grounded universe like contemporary romance (See Kla in LBC1&2).
Next week is gonna be a test of the whole damn franchise. Imma remind both me a you that this was ep 3 of 10 so we got a ways to go yet... but ooof, what have we wrought, BL? (I ended up doing a whole post about the stepbrother trope because of this sub plot.) Taiwan is killing me.
Tumblr media
-- RANT ended --
Word of Honor (China) Ep 19-21 - over half way point so we got ALL the back story (in a classic 4 act story structure midway reveal). Now we know who WKX really is and his lineage. We also got some cute hugs and hand holds. Moving along at a nice clip despite being 36 eps total. Still gayest thing to come out of we-not-gay China since Advance Bravely.
Most Peaceful Place (Vietnam) Ep 2 - takes them a while to get eng subs together and ep 2 didn’t drop until late. So I’m putting this in a Thurs time slot going forward. Miscommunication already cleared up and a 2nd couple has been introduced. The pacing on these Vietnamese BLs is always a bit... off. But it’s still better than most of its ilk, enjoyable. I’m thinking it’s a 6 ep arc.
We Best Love 2 (Taiwan) Ep 5 - after the initial drama DRAMA of ep 2, the current external crisis at work is much quieter, giving this whole season a top heavy feel. Taken along side the first season, I think it’s fitting nicely into a 4 act structure, but that might be my bias. I hope I’m not wrong, we’ll find out next week. Shi De puttering about being domestic with Shu Yi on his back was the best execution of the piggyback trope EVER. Meanwhile, our little D/s side couple of codependency, salvation trope + mental illness is becoming weirdly appealing. I don’t know. H4 done mess with my head.
Tumblr media
Stand Alones
Absolute BL AKA Zettai BL ni Naru Sekai vs Zettai BL ni Naritakunai Otoko  (Japan) Ep 1-4 mini series. Found subs under A Man Who Defies The World of BL. IT’S HILARIOUS. It’s Japan making fun of us, but also itself for having started this whole BL nonsense - from yaoi roots to present day. It’s parody goddamn gold. Utterly cheeky unto the very last line. We are not worthy.
Apparently the most powerful tropes of all time are: baby is a floppy drunk and the piggyback fo nobility. Oh and chocolate. {Full review here.}
Honestly, this show may have been made with only @heretherebedork and I in mind. I don’t know if you’d even understand half of it if you don’t have a history with the manga source genre and an obsessive interest in underlying narrative devices. I haven’t seen much chatter in the blog’o’sphere on this one because, in the end, it’s not a romance at all, it’s social commentary.
The ending line was a masterclass in lampooning a genre. I’m going to rewatch the whole thing just to catch all the digs I missed first time around. It is a thing of beauty and a joy forever.
Thank you Japan. I forgive you all your hair-styling sins of the last decade.

Breaking News
Spring Line Up:
Scholar Ryu’s Wedding Ceremony AKA Nobleman Ryu’s Wedding (Korean historical BL) April 15th
Close Friend the series (Thai trailer) April 22.
2gether the movie (Thai trailer) April 22 to Thai theaters.
Nitiman (Thai) May 7 on One31.
I Told Sunset About You 2 (Thai) May 27 on LineTV
Ossan’s Love (Hong Kong) June to Viu
Tumblr media
Gossip
Bad Buddies released its first promo op via Arm Share, which means GMMTV is at least *thinking* about filming it.
Fun behind the scenes gossip sesh with eng subs for Tell the World I Love You (that Perth Bas movie we are maybe getting someday but will likely be sad).
Tumblr media
New Thai BL Bite Me (adapted from novel Grab a Bite) dropped a teaser. It stars Mark Siwat (Kla in LBC) as uke character Ake, a delivery boy with special foodie powers, and chef Eua (seme played by Zung Kidakorn) who discovers him. It’s from the same author as Manner of Death so we might even get some actual plot. Since it’s an established BL actor who I happen LOVE, a known author, and a plot about FOOD, I could not me more excited for this one.
Tumblr media
Next Week Looks Like This:
Some shows may be listed a day later than actual air date for accessibility reasons. Some are dropping multiples at a time but just started so I’m not sure on numbering.
Tumblr media
Upcoming 2021 BL master post here.
Links to watch are provided when possible, ask in a comment if I missed something.

so. that was some straight up horror movie shit, huh? for an episode with no daryl or princess i had a surprisingly good time
just gonna do a highlight reel bc it’s so very much past my bedtime
on mobile, can’t do a cut, sorry, etc
spoilers commencingggg
g
g
g
g
g
g
g
g
g
g
now:
-HOW THE FUCK ARE THEY GONNA KILL OFF DUNCAN AND ELIJAH (and that one chick, agatha?) IN ONE FELL SWOOP, BUT THEN LET SKYRIM NPC ALDEN SURVIVE?
-that’s some straight up bullshit, man
-fun fact: i 110% forgot that skryim npc alden used to be a negan brony until he talked shit about it in front of negan lol
-anyway, just had to get that off my chest
-negan’s role this entire episode, and actually this entire season so far, is “character with common sense who has been dropped into a scenario where everyone around him is acting like a white person in a horror movie” and it’s very funny
-“so we’re just gonna go /towards/ the screaming, then?” i lol’d
-the cut scenes between Maggie & Others being stuck in a psychological horror film juxtaposed with Carol & The Girls being in a late 90s horse girl adventure movie was very funny
-some of maggie’s scenes straight up freaked me tf out tho, ngl. it felt like that one episode of black mirror, the title of which escapes me and i’m too lazy to look it up, but you know, the one with the people in animal masks chasing the lady?
-it’s actually gonna bother me if i don’t look it up, hold on
-white bear
-anyway
-my face was like this for a good half of the episode:
Tumblr media
-the reapers are super fucked up, dude, they legit freak me out. i am looking forward to daryl meeting up with leah and having to be like “oh! so actually you’re an insane person! good to know!”
-the score for the reapers is really good, too. better than the whisperer’s score and that one slapped
-rosita and carol’s interaction was very nice because it was refreshing to have carol interact with other women on the show, and it was also very funny because the entire interaction amounted to: “so i’ve been having some fucked up dreams about abraham” “that sounds unpleasant” “yeah, i think they’re prophetic” “what’s the message?” “who knows? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ idk why i told you that, lol, anyway, next topic”
-i’m sure that won’t become relevant later
-magna (i remembered her name) hugging carol and carol being like “literally what is happening?” was sweet
-i like, knew that they were gonna have to eat horse at some point, but having them bring the horses back to alexandria all triumphant and smiling, and then immediately cutting to carol slitting one of their throats and crying while covered in blood was -chefs kiss-
-the children were a fucking delight, ofc. hershel jr. is literally mini glenn, i can’t handle it. him and judith have great, adorable chemistry and i want them to be bffs
-(i like how they’re still giving rj one or two word lines bc he’s still a terrible child actor lol)
-did i hit all the parts i cared about?
-oh. i don’t care about gabriel that much (and kind of resent him bc i still don’t understand how rosita could be banging siddiq and then pick fucking gabriel over him, like wtf??) but him being like “god isn’t here anymore” and stabbing that guy was entertaining
-magna telling carol to not give kelly false hope and then carol immediately disregarding that and doing whatever the fuck she wants was very on brand
-anything else?
-probably, but my brain is fried and i’m p sure most of this review is gibberish as is, i don’t need to add any more to it
-i’m really digging s11 so far. gonna need me some princess to balance out the darylrrhea, tho i’m actually anticipating that to be juicy and since i’m avoiding all discourse i might be able to enjoy it anxiety free
-well
-anxiety limited
-i was also thinking about how carol still has leah’s knife. you think there might be a showdown between the two of them? or a “daryl has to pick who to save” sort of situation?
-don’t actually answer that, i don’t want to know
-but also 🤔
-i should really read through this and see if it makes any sense but i’m not gonna. sorry ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

book recommendations?? 👉👈
Yessssss I have so many! You didn't specify any genre/interests but since you're here asking me I'm gonna have to assume you're all about that queer rep like myself so here's some books that I am either currently reading, looking forward to reading in the future, or have read at some point in the last year or two and loved!
Currently Reading
1. One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston
I've just started reading this and let me tell you it is AMAZING. Some highlights are- majorly queer and/or poc cast of characters, wlw main characters, time travel shenanigans, a magical diner, a very loveable dog and a "twink with multitudes."
Haven't even gotten halfway through yet but I already know it's gonna be one of my all-time favourites.
2. Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Q Sutanto
This one I'm only one chapter in but it has me excited already.
The plot revolves around Meddy, an indonesian-chinese woman, who accidentally murders her blind date and has to recruit the help of her Aunties to cover it up, all while they are planning an over the top billionaire wedding. This book is quirky rom com and murder mystery all in one with a surprise queer romance (so I've bee told)!
In my TBR
1. Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíkeé-Íyímídé
Now I don't know much about how the plot unfolds for this one because it is a mystery and I didn't want spoilers but I have seen this described as "gossip girl meets get out" and if that doesn't reel you in idk what will.
One thing that I do know is that this book has a lot of hype around it and it's all very much deserved. Also that both the mcs, Devon and Chiamaka, are qpoc.
2. Hani and Ishu's Guide to Fake Dating by Adiba Jaigirdar
What's that? A desi wlw romcom featuring a bi mc, fake dating turned actual relationship shenanigans and a certified Happily Ever After? Sign me the fuck up. Legit so excited to read this one y'all don't even understand.
3. The Princess Deception by Nell Stark
Y'all ever watched She's The Man and thought this would've been a thousand times better if this was a wlw romance instead? So did I and apparently so did Nell Stark who has made all my dreams come true with just one gender-bent Duke :)))))
A quick note, the book is an adaptation of Twelfth Night itself and not the actual movie so it's a Royal Romance and not a high school based one. It is still set in modern times but Sebastian and Viola are Royals and Missy Duke is a reporter. The football element also remained as it is set in the backdrop of a World Cup that Viola, impersonating Crown Prince Sebastian, is hosting.
Have Read and Loved
1. Red White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston
One of my favourite novels ever. This book was everything I wanna see in a romcom honestly. It was funny, heart-warming, the romance was both passionate but realistic and I never once felt like it didn't make sense for these two characters to be together and love each other so much, which is a problem I have with romances a lot.
Pretty sure most people know about this book by now but here's the highlights anyway- majorly queer and/or poc cast of characters, bi mc, gay love interest, first son of the usa falls for the prince of wales, enemies to friends to lovers, secret relationships, amazing coming out scenes.
2. Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz
This book broke my heart then built it back up stronger than ever.
I sat down to read a little bit and before I knew it it had been six hours and the book was over. It pulled me in so hard it was almost like a spell. I laughed and cried and felt so many emotions throughout this book and it left me reeling. Gods I could sit here and talk about how much this book affected me for hours. It was a whole experience.
Ari and Dante is a coming of age story about these two boys discovering their identities through exploring their sexualities as well as their relationships with each other, their families and the world at large. It's a story about both queer experiences as well as life as a mexican-american in the 80s.
The book ends on a happy note and has a sequel set to release soon and while not a lot of details have been released so far the author has confirmed that the main characters do not die at the end due to certain rumours going around about the same. There's also a movie currently in development for the first book.
This one got a bit long, clearly I have a lot to say about this book, I think everyone should read this at some point but also it is pretty heavy so please check the trigger warnings before you start.
`````
So yeah those are some books that I have loved/want to read that I'd recommend everyone with similar taste as myself check out. Hope this helps!
5, 9, 18, 21, 35, 37, 38 :3c for the horror asks obviously
😌
5. if you were a character in a horror movie, what kind of movie would it be? what kind of character would you be? what would be your fate?
ALIEN MOVIE ALIEN MOVIE
I would be that one crackpot who is CONVINCED it's aliens and guess what. I was right all along. It's my obscure and wacky knowledge of aliens that saves the day. And then I get abducted of course. What happens after that remains to be seen.
(also lbr if I were in any kind of horror movie, I'd be the bitch who dies first)
9. answer for real life vs if you were a slasher movie character: you're a counsellor at a summer camp, newly re-opened after almost a decade. after a long day of getting everything ready for the campers, you are sitting at the fire with the other counsellors and one of them starts telling you how this place is supposed to be haunted, cursed, whatever term you want to use. your mind instantly connects the kind-of-odd things you've noticed and the strange feeling you've been getting throughout the day to this newly learned information. do you leave the camp? or at least consider doing so?
I would want to leave and then everyone would ignore me and tell me to suck it up. And would promptly die. Which I guess is vindication in a way. Getting me out into nature is the REAL horror movie.
18. would you rather summon candyman or open the box leading the cenobites to you?
Probably candyman because at least I like bees??? I don't like the psychological horror and destroying my life aspect but that's better than... whatever happens when you open the pain box. I saw that scene with the guy getting hooked apart. I'll take bees over that any day.
21. is there a scary story that really frightens you or that just really stuck with you? a legend, a myth, something purely fictitious?
HMMMMMMMM Not really! I'm not particularly superstitious and I don't believe in ghosts, but I AM anxious and that makes me not do so well in legit scary situations. Given that I'm a desert dweller, there are definitely moments out in the dark that feel intensely strange, though. I hate driving past the fields. I've never had a legit paranormal experience, so until that happens I remain unfrightened.
35. what would be the most ideal way to spend halloween to you? you can be as unrealistic as you want.
I trick or treated until I was like... 18? Nowadays I'm much more content to just sit at home and watch scary movies or play a scary game of DND with my buddies. Not much of a partier 😔
37. it's halloween! the clock strikes midnight and at the edge of town, a witch is trying to summon you. what items will she need for the spell to work?
Red vines. Dragon fruit vitamin water (and not that acai shit that tastes like sweat). A warm blanket and fuzzy socks. My cat but tbh if someone took Zoe, that would be the summoning spell alone. You'd just me summoning me to throw hands.
38. are there any future horror releases that you are looking forward to?
I want to see NOPE but I hear it's like.... wildly fucking intense and horrifying at the end. I also really want to see Prey!!
Hoshi throws open the front door and yells in excitement. "Movie night!"
"Keep the sugar away from him." Woozi says sarcastically.
"You guys have fun, I think I'm gonna introvert for the rest of the night." Wonwoo waves a hand, "You know, prepare for tomorrow and all."
Seungcheol gives him a thumbs up.
"I think I'm headed in too." Minghao comments.
"Same here." Dino quips.
"Aww, but Dino," You whine, "It's Marvel night."
Dino chuckles and Joshua wraps an arm around your shoulders, leading you towards the couch.
"Maybe the next Marvel night. Cause there is no way you're watching all of them tonight." He tells you.
"Wanna bet?" You smirk playfully.
Dino just shakes his head as he makes his way to his room.
In the kitchen, Mingyu, Hoshi, and Dokyeom are raiding the cabinets for snacks with Seungcheol, Seungkwan, and Jeonghan who are raiding the fridge for drinks. Woozi and Vernon work on setting up the movie while you and Joshua settle into the couch. Jun just sits quietly at the other end of the couch, waiting for the others to do the work.
"Whatever happens tonight," You turn to Joshua, "I cannot sleep over tonight."
"Okay." Joshua shrugs, "But why not? You're always welcome here. And in my bed." He wiggles his eyebrows and you smack his shoulder in embarrassment.
"Gross.” You say before explaining, “I have a shit ton of house work to do tomorrow."
"You can put it off for one more day." Joshua mutters and lazily rests his head on your shoulder.
You shake your head, "Actually, I can't. I haven't cleaned an inch of my house in a month. It's disgusting." A shiver runs down your spine. "I need to clean it."
"Pshh," Vernon glances back, having overheard the conversation, "A month ain't that bad. I have friend who didn't clean his room for three months."
"WE WERE ON TOUR, ASSHOLE." Seungkwan screams from the kitchen.
Vernon sticks out his tongue in the direction of the kitchen but puts it away before Seungkwan can catch it. You giggle and you can feel Joshua smiling at the younger two.
"A month is a long time." You say once your giggles are finished, "I feel so gross there."
"All the more reason you should stay here." Joshua exclaims.
You nudge up the shoulder on which Joshua's head lays, "You have to get up at the butt crack up dawn and I do not want to be woken up by another airhorn incident."
"THAT WAS JEONGHAN HYUNG'S FAULT, NOT MINE!" Mingyu protests loudly.
Jeonghan's evil laugh is heard soon after, "That was the most beautiful prank I have ever pulled." He walks in and sets the drinks on the coffee table.
"You woke everyone in the house." Woozi says blankly while flipping through the Marvel movies to find the one we wanted to watch, 'Thor: Ragnarok.'
"And it was totally worth it." Jeonghan gives Woozi snapped finger guns but Woozi doesn't turn around.
"Alright, snacks are all here." Hoshi says happily as he and Dokyeom set the rest of the snacks on the table: bowls of popcorn, chocolate candy, fruity candy, pretzels, some fruit (probably Mingyu's doing), and a pack of chocolate chip cookies.
"And so are the drinks." Seungkwan adds as he and Seungcheol walk up behind the snack couple. Cans of Sprites, Cokes, beers, and juices all stand tall on the table.
"Everyone settle in." You announce as Woozi finds the right movie, "Let's watch Chris Hemsworth kick some ass."
"Language." Seungcheol warns making your mouth drop open.
"Seungkwan swore before!" You counter, pointing a finger at the male sitting next to your legs.
"Well, in that case." Seungcheol says then leans over and gives Seungkwan a small smack to the head.
"Ow." Seungkwan angrily looks at his leader while rubbing the spot where he was hit.
Seungcheol opens his mouth to say some comment but Hoshi shushes him.
"Shhh, the movie is starting." He emphasizes every other word and stresses each gesture towards the TV screen.
"Yo, Joshua, can you turn off the lights?" Jeonghan asks, pointing up towards the ceiling lights.
Joshua sighs but turns the lights off before returning to his position wrapped around you. You munch on some snacks and sip on your can of Sprite (because if you drank the alcohol, you wouldn't be going home and the Coke's caffeine would keep you up all night but you wanted something carbonated), as the movie rolls. Joshua steals many pieces and many sips from you, sometimes directly out of your hand, but you let him because he lets you steal his food just as much, if not more.
"Man, I love this movie." Hoshi, who sits next to you whispers excitedly.
"Me too." You whisper back as the intro scenes fade away to the actual movie.
"Tessa Thomson is amazing in it." Hoshi continues to whisper to you.
"I think Chris Hemsworth is better. Hotter." You banter back.
"I'm right here." Joshua says, taking another piece of popcorn from the bowl that sits in your lap.
"Never said I would date him." You correct him.
"Shush." Seungcheol playfully throws Hoshi's previous sentence at us. "The movie is playing."
"Sorry." You and Hoshi whisper back to him.
The movie plays right along while you and the other members laugh during the good parts. Joshua restlessly changes positions from side hugging you to just sitting next to you, holding your hand to leaning slightly away but tangling his legs in yours to slinging an arm around your shoulders. It's like the man is sitting on the world's most uncomfortable sofa. It gets to the point where Vernon, who is sitting near his legs, notices.
"Am I making you uncomfortable, hyung?" Vernon asks, looking behind him as Joshua intertwines his arm and hand with yours.
Joshua shakes his head, "You're good."
"Okay." Vernon takes Joshua's answer and turns back around.
Around halfway through the movie, you found your eyes drooping low. So you shake your head to get rid of the sleep wind and refocus on the movie.
But...
"You know, sometimes I feel like Korg." Hoshi whispers softly, "You know with the- oh." He turns to you only to see your head leaning on Joshua's shoulder with your eyes closed and mouth half opened.
Hoshi quietly reaches over and taps Joshua's leg.
Joshua looks over and raises his eyebrows, silently asking, 'What?'
Hoshi points down to your sleeping figure, "She's asleep." He mouths.
Glancing down, Joshua leans his head forward ever so slightly to check for himself. As he looks over your sleeping features, he can't but smile at how adorable you look. Your eyes are closed and your cheek is smooshed up against his shoulder causing your mouth to fall open slightly. With a happy smile, he turns his attention back towards the screen and stays absolutely still.
Not wanting to wake you, he doesn't move a muscle.
Joshua stays so still, in fact, that Vernon AND Seungkwan begin to wonder if HE has fallen asleep. But when they look back they realize that it's you who has fallen asleep.
"Hyung, take her to the room, we'll pause it for you." Seungkwan quietly suggests.
Joshua shakes his head, "No need to pause. I'll just take her." He gently moves you so you’re cradled against his chest before standing on his feet.
Vernon moves aside to let Joshua past and he crosses the living room.
"Didn't she say she couldn't stay over?" Woozi watches Joshua carry you.
Mingyu shrugs, "I feel like she always says that but ends up sleeping over anyway."
Joshua reaches his room and somehow, don't ask him how, got you under the covers without having you stir even the tiniest bit. He tucks you in and moves a few hairs out of your face. The warm night light brightens up your face with a warm glow and Joshua can’t help but run his fingers along your cheek. Over the smooth skin and tiny pimple bumps that are probably from the massive amount of sugar you two ate a few days ago.
"So much for not sleeping over tonight." Joshua whispers amusedly to himself. He kisses your forehead sweetly before making sure you're all tucked in. After closing his door as quietly as possible, he makes his way back to the living room where the others are still watching the movie.
"Jeonghan," Joshua says, reclaiming his seat as Seungkwan has claimed your previous spot. "Don't you dare play another prank tomorrow morning or (y/n) legit might kill you."
Jeonghan shrugs, "Her fault for falling asleep here."
"Then I will kill you." Joshua banters back.
"Fine, fine, I won't." Jeonghan raises his hands in defeat, "Though I can't be responsible for noises that the others make." He smiles wickedly.
"HEY!" The other members protest at his prank agenda.
"I'm just sayin', sometimes y'all are fucking loud in the morning." Jeonghan spits back.
Seungcheol smacks Jeonghan's shoulder, "Hey, language."
"Hey, back." Jeonghan smacks Seungcheol back.
"Hey, Tessa Thomson!" Hoshi points at the screen happily as her character rides in on her winged horse.
Joshua chuckles at Hoshi's unusual yet surprisingly successful attempt to reroute attention back to the movie.
When the movie is finished, and Hoshi has completed his whisper-scream shpeel about how great the movie is, Joshua shuffles back to his room, ready to curl up beside you.
He pulls back the covers and does his best not to wake you as he slides in next to you. But he kind of fails.
"What time is it?" You ask with your eyes still closed.
"Late." He answers vaguely, lowering himself completely into bed.
"I shouldn't stay, I gotta clean tomorrow." Your voice protests but your arms reach for Joshua's warmth.
"It's too late. You can still clean tomorrow." Joshua reassures you, "Just sleep."
"I swear to god, if Yoon Jeonghan pulls anything." You muttered angrily yet pouty.
"He won't." Joshua holds back a chuckle, "I have him on pain of death."
"Good cause I..." You trail off with mumbled jargon and Joshua can't hold his chuckle in anymore.
Joshua snuggles close to you and plants a soft kiss on the tip of you nose.
"Night, (y/n)."
*Morning*
Dokyeom blindly makes his way into the bathroom. He brushes his teeth, washes his face, and reaches for his lotion. As he presses the top, the cold, moisturizing lotion never reaches his hand.
Instead, he's scared shitless by the extremely loud blare of an airhorn. His high pitched shriek mixes with the air horn for a second before he drops the air horn, silencing it. He screams for a few more seconds before realizing what had happened with eyes as wide as a dinner plate and fully alert.
Then, from the house, the neighbors can hear 13 angry and/or annoyed voices scream, "YOON JEONGHAN!"
Night Drivers/Return to Wartwood!
           This episode was REALLY GOOD you guys!!!
           Like, this was a PHENOMENAL return to the show after a months-long hiatus, and genuinely action-packed, hilarious, and had me on the edge of my seat! It was just SSSOOOO enjoyable and I’ve got a lot to say about it!
           Firstly, I LOVE all of these continuity references, to Anne reading Bessie’s manual, Wally being Walliam, as well as that off-screen reference to Hop Pop and Polly being given that wish list ahead of time! It really makes the journey feel all the more cohesive and connected, bound together… And likewise, I love Anne and Hop Pop’s dynamic as the eldest of the family who have the most common sense and have to look after everyone, it’s great! I love Hop Pop’s dream gag and how he’s fairly certain there’s something symbolic to discern, but he can’t tell what- That’s a mood, and really all of his antics and declaring himself a god within was hilarious. Anne’s mood conversely starting nice but turning dark was great, and I legit expected some nightmare fuel before the reveal that it was just licorice; And shoot, now I want to try licorice-flavored froyo! I’ve got a few yogurtland coupons, but I doubt that’s a flavor, at least as far as I remember…
           The monster and background design in Amphibia remains particularly impeccable in Night Drivers, like that snake with what appears to be a decoy prey animal in its mouth to attract good Samaritans; Or even just the rocks having skeletons and bones smeared across, implying they’ve crushed and run over plenty of other passengers on their way down! That foggy bit was legitimately surreal and creepy and reminded me of Silent Hill and this one movie called The Mist, I believe- I’ve never watched it but I get the general premise, and I wonder if that scene was an homage? Also, that Frobo cameo was AMAZING and clever, how it’s grabbing for the Plantars… And that joke about Anne eating Hop Pop was hilarious, I’m sorry but like; Hop Pop is HIGHLY underrated in my opinion!
           The whole chase sequence from Man Door Hook Car Door Hand, or however it goes… The entirety of Night Drivers really reminded me of those urban legends, and the twist at the end where the hitchhiker is actually a helpful ghosts; It was some nice lore and world-building, but also reminded me a LOT of this one story I heard… Which, it was probably a reference towards, but this season really makes the world of Amphibia feel so much more fleshed-out and real, perilous and kind of messed-up, etc.! I saw the twist with Zachariah being helpful, but you know what they say; It’s about the journey, not the destination! Well, actually, it IS about the destination, it’s why Sprig and Polly decided to drive at night in the first place, to get to Wartwood; Speaking of which…
           Return to Wartwood! Another amazing episode, I love that bit of Ivy hiding in a disguise, I saw it and couldn’t be fooled; And I’ve MISSED Wartwood, it’s felt like a year since we’ve last seen it! Which, we technically saw it in the first episode of the summer last year… But it was such a brief passing-through, that coupled with the hiatus between Seasons 1 and 2, and it DOES feel like it’s been over a year to finally get back to good-old antics here! I actually felt the homesickness and joy of the Plantars here… And as I said before, that gag about only Hop Pop and Polly knowing, but to THEM of course they remember, and them just helplessly slapping the floor of the Fwagon was surprisingly humorous. I have to wonder how their shopping trip at Newtopia would’ve gone differently, had they remembered the wish list! And don’t be so hard on yourself Sprig, YOU didn’t know of the wish list, so you can blame it all on your sister and Hop Pop; Besides, you have those broken halves of a staff…?
           I love how Anne has progressed and grown into like, the exasperated, common sense person who’s getting tired of the antics now –even if she’s not fully immune herself- and wants no part in things, her growth feels clear and impeccable here. Seeing the Chicka-lisk from the intro FINALLY debut was like seeing the Intro Worm from the Owl House in its season finale; A wonderful surprise to really tie things together! And that whole sequence where the Plantars perform a satanic ritual just to get away from their responsibilities, that Loggle jumpscare, just the realization that they’re already wearing cloaks at night with candles and a glowing red circle; The escalation had me rolling!
           The Plantars were surprisingly thoughtful in their choice of monster, even if things still went wrong because the townspeople have learned to be more defiant, no thanks to Anne and Hop Pop; The gag of Toady being used as a petrified shield, only for Mayor Toadstool to realize he WAS petrified… Those two frogs looking into each other’s eyes, Maddie knowing about the whole thing, I love it! It just flowed and was done so well, the whole bit felt like a video game boss fight, especially with Hop Pop and Sylvia dodging the shockwaves… The Chicka-lisk being pretty chill was kind of adorable, and I enjoyed the callback to the town’s formations against outside monsters, with this one ACTUALLY working… But for completely unexpected reasons that had me burst in unexpected laughter. Though, for all I know, it WAS the intent to offend- But regardless, seeing Toadstool welcome Anne as part of the formation and she can just roll with it and KNOWS… It’s such a welcome development from the very first episode, the growth is real and it feels like a journey we’re looking back upon!
           Also, Anne’s sword skills were freaking amazing, as was her deflecting the petrification beams; Can’t wait to see more of that in action, she’s quite the fighter and Paladin at this point, and I kind of want to see more of the townspeople in action as like, something that they can rally for in later battles and story events! I really want an action-adventure game for Amphibia now, actually… I mean, I’ve always wanted one, but now it hits harder, especially with the recent Legend of Zelda vibes from the newest trailer.
           …Also, SPRIVY KISS I WAS SQUEALING LIKE ANNE THE ENTIRE TIME THEY REALLY ARE THAT ADORABLE YIIIISSSSSS!!!!!
           This episode was a WONDERFUL return to the show that blew my expectations out of the swampy water with the pacing, the direction, the humor and moments, the callback and action, the surprising horror bits and chaos; And I appreciate the Plantars being called out as the chaos family, they’re like the Tooks in the Shire from the Hobbit! This episode was timed well, it does feel like a return to home after so long, and it makes my heart warm as I feel sentimental and happy… I’m honestly down to just a few episodes of getting back to Wartwood, to those good old times before the story beats return with Marcy and Sasha! Here’s looking forward to next week, F-Annes!
So I watched Chaos Walking(2021)
Yeah, lucky for me, my local theater was open and showing(side note, I love my local theater so much. Like, not to brag but seven dollars for a movie and a snack is so great)
Anyhow, I watched Chaos walking. This is sort of my review.
First off, I read The Knife of Never Letting Go and one third of The Ask and Answer, almost two years ago. When they finally dropped the release date and the trailer, i made the choice not to go reread the first book because i wanted to give the movie a chance and make an exercise of managing my expectations(in preparation for Disney’s Percy Jackson adaptation). Which means not only do I not have a complete understanding of the source material, but I also have a shit memory, so I don’t have a great shot at analyzing this films in adaptation terms, but i’m gonna try anyhow.
So first off, The Noise.
Tumblr media
I found it a bit sketchy that they decided to make the make Noise have visual elements alongside audio but I decided it was fine, since it be pretty hard to bring this to life with only just audio and not make general audiences confused.
Tumblr media
But they did try and do a solid job. Minus not letting us hear the Noise of animals, which sucks. we do see the Noise of a Spackle, but briefly.
The part that really pisses me off is the final confrontation, when the Noise is treated like a Super Power. we see this when Todd scares Davy’s horse by conjuring up an image of big snake, when Mayor Prentiss tricks Viola into a false trap, when  Ben tricks everyone by pretending to give Viola up when in fact he’s buying Todd and the real Viola time to get away, and in the final, Todd distracts Prentiss by conjuring up the image of his mother(complete with bloody wounds) and the various women that died when he was a baby, which caused Prentiss to fall to his death.
I don’t know how the Noise is depicted in the later books, if it was anywhere remotely like this, but i know for sure it doesn’t happen in the first book, which the film is based on.
(Also, how the fuck does Todd know what his mum looks like, or any of the other women and how is he able to bring up their images so perfectly how is ANYONE ABLE REMEMBER SOMEONE WITH THAT MUCH DETAIL That goes beyond photographic memory)
Second bit, the Spackle.
Tumblr media
 The design is boring. Its clearly an alien, buts its dark grey, tall, holds its own when Todd attacks it in the film, has zero impact on the film as a whole and pretty boring. I do recall reading the book and imagining them to have faces similar to real world lemurs or Sloths, with big expressive eyes and such, but the CGI monster doesn’t emote for shit in this film. Todd comes at with a knife with every intention of killing it and it shrugs him off and walks away like it wasn’t fucking attacked my gods.
But in short, they only brought up the Spackle because they’re a thing in the world and it teased the bigger concepts of the next books with like, one measly exchange between Todd and Viola. (it went something like this)
Viola:We’re the aliens, though. They’re the natives.
Todd: huh.
Third bit, New World itself. Not a big deal, It looked like how i originally imagined it, no mention of swamp apples, though we see Todd Hewitt use a knife to stab a big ass bug thing for food. i hear some critics consider it lame that the planet isn’t actually alien but eh, whatever, Didn’t really feel an alien vibe reading the book so it doesn’t matter.
Now there’s one bit i have to acknowledge in passing. At one point Todd decides to go get lunch by going into the water with his knife and wrestles with some big ass thing with tentacles. Which is fine, just have a couple of questions.
A: is this in reference to the books? Where there big ass tentacle creatures in the novel that are hunted for lunch?
B:if not, was this the film makers deciding to remind the viewers that yes, they are not on planet earth and to make Todd look cooler and justify why he’s useful for the quest and show how much Viola doesn’t know?
I kinda have to acknowledge the thing.  In that scene, Todd and Viola take a break, and Todd removes his clothes (all of them) and decides to go hunting in the water naked as the day he was born. You may have noticed that the Tom Holland stans are all over this scene because One) the camera focuses on Tom Hollands muscles when he takes his top off and Two) one can see his bare ass in the distance.
Not a big fan off this, just find it interesting because its the most recent example of a Male being objectified by the camera when this never happens once to any of the female characters in the film, including Viola. Also, a touch of weird character detailing because haha, get it? Boy’s never seen a girl before in his life and doesn’t know what modesty means.
Also, very weird because Todd Hewitt in the book was so fucking self conscious that he would never have done that.
Now I gotta talk about the characters.
Tumblr media
( i understand why they aged them up, i truly do, better to get established actors instead of child actors that could more easily break to movie than sell it. its easier to make movies with legal adults instead of working with child labor laws. but damn it you lose so much of the fucking nuance of the novel when you age them up. There’s so much shit that makes an impact because of how young they are. Around the ages of eleven and twelve is when ones understanding of good and evil has its foundation, to me it was like the story was grappling with Todd Hewitt’s very soul and you lose so much of that when you change it to them being older because instead of being just kids in fucked up situations its younger adults in messed up situations. Like ugh. and aging them up leads to even more problems but we’ll fucking get to that)
Tom Holland’s Todd Hewitt is not the Todd Hewitt of the novel. He just ain’t. There is nothing there that reminds of the boy. The acting is solid, don’t get me wrong, but it just ain’t the Todd Hewitt i remember. Neither is Daisy Ridley’s Viola Eade.
(excuse me while i get Percy Jackson flashbacks)
Now, I have to acknowledge the fact that neither actor(actually none of the actors in this film) slouch on the job. They bring solid and at times very good acting.(If Tom Holland is in the film, its not going to be complete waste of time. He brings quality.)
Honestly, respect to Mr Holland because he was basically the main character, not only acting but also doing voice  and various stunts(also huge credit to the stunt coordinators and stuntmen) and I heard that filming wasn’t that great and bloody broke his nose how many times like damn boy, hats off to you.
But here’s the thing. I don’t want to say that Holland was playing himself or just a version of peter Parker, because i really don’t think he wasn’t but it just. Didn’t feel like a legit character? Especially when compared to the novel. Like Todd Hewitt in the novel is such a raw force of emotion and such a smartass and i was so looking forward for Holland to own this role but in the movie he just? Awkward dude going through some stuff?
but yeah, Holland works his ass off and there are some scenes and moments in the movie that work just because this fellow is just that charming, so (shrug emoji) like i said, He doesn’t waste your time at least.
Ridley....sigh. i know this woman can act. But next to the character who’s thoughts are heard constantly she’s very boring. And it hurts so much because Viola has an actual personality in the novel like; I’m ninety percent sure that Viola hits Todd with a big stick and I do remember that there were multiple moments where she lets Todd know when he’s being a dumbass.(seriously, i may have a shit memory of the book, but i do remember that they play off each other well and hugely entertaining seeing two twelve-year-olds handle the shit getting thrown at them)
Like, Viola in the film doesn’t really have much going on. We see the crash, we hear about the graves she dug herself, we see her be sad, we see her look at Todd like weirdo, we see her look horrified or shocked. (its so sad that I only remember the facial expressions more clearly than the actual dialogue) We really have no idea what the hell is going on with Viola Eade. I don’t think we can blame Ridley, only the film makers, because how can you see Viola Eade in the novel and then turn her into that????
i do have to talk about the relationship between Tom Holland’s Todd Hewitt and Daisy Ridley’s Viola Eade, even though its painful. In the novel, them is just two kids on a really tough adventure.  Because they aged them up, its not two kids old enough to run for the playground when recess starts. Its Teenagers.
First question, HOW OLD ARE THEY??? Is Todd sixteen? Eighteen? Seventeen? He sure as hell ain’t Thirteen in this. What about Viola? I mean, big shout out to the hair and makeup team for making 28-year-old Daisy Ridley look so much younger but how. OLD. IS.SHE? Nineteen? Twenty? Twenty-one? Pretty sure she’s older than him in this? I ask because it MATTERS.
The way they play off each other has a vastly different energy to the novel because they are aged up. Its pretty obvious pretty fast that Todd’s feelings are basically a big crush, though not all of it is superficial as the film progresses. And Viola is clearly not receptive to that in the film. (honestly i cringed so hard at the “daydream kiss’ and whatever the hell that was in the Farbranch mayor’s house)
The relationship in the film just doesn’t have the nuance or the energy that the novel had in depicting their relationship which is depressing for all the Todd x Viola fans i’m sure. There’s some adorable bits though, like Viola seeing Todd’s dream of her playing with Manchee, and not so adorable canon bits like when Viola read the diary to Todd.
I’m just grateful that the film at least ended with them being friends instead of trying to force the romantic relationship. That right there is why I like the movie. It’s a crush, its used for a couple laughs, they’re friends, its fine. Even if you didn’t read the novel that’s really great for a movie in this day and age to not end with forcing two opposite sex characters into a relationship. To be honest, I like the idea that the film leaves us thinking that yeah, maybe these two could be real friends one day.
I just want to touch on Manchee real quick.
Tumblr media
Manchee’s Noise is not seen or heard in the film. It is briefly acknowledged by Todd ins their first scene but other than that? Nada. Which is a low blow in comparison to the novel because Manchee was a character in his own right, which is why the death hit so hard.
Todd?” he barks, confused and scared and watching me leave him behind. “Todd?” “Manchee!” I scream. Aaron brings his free hand towards my dog. “MANCHEE!” “Todd?” And Aaron wrenches his arms and there’s a CRACK and a scream and a cut-off yelp that tears my heart in two forever and forever. And the pain is too much it’s too much it’s too much and my hands are on my head and I’m rearing back and my mouth is open in a never-ending wordless wail of all the blackness that’s inside of me.”
in the film, it takes place in white rapids, So its chaotic, its awful, the veiwer’s all stressed out because Viola can’t swim, everyone's getting separated and Aaron’s there and he is seen drowning Manchee.
Dude, its brief, but not pretty. Because you can see Manchee’s legs trashing above the water, struggling to get free. Aaron is drowning a dog, letting its lungs fill with water. For the folks that don’t like watching dogs die in graphic detail on screen, this isn’t great.
Personally, I love this scene in the novel. Its the first time i had to put the book down and take a moment. It hit really close to home for me, because i watched my own dog die in real life. It was emotional and horrifying and had such a fucking impact because we could hear his thoughts. Todd had to make the choice to leave him behind to keep Viola safe. To be honest, i think the death is better in the novel, since Manchee basically dies instantly instead of drowning, which takes time(I’ve always assumed that his neck was snapped but I’ve heard others say it was the psine but whatever) it would have been easy and necessary for them to not show that on screen. I personally just think that in terms of depicting a violent death, the novel did a lot better.
Anyway, on to the other characters
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I had to choose the one with the big orange fluffy coat, and i couldn’t find a good pic og Ben and Cillian on google images.)
As for Mayor Prentiss, he’s played by Mads Mikkelsen, and he delivers. But for the most part, we don’t really know why he’s the bad guy, he just wants to get Viola because “she’s the key” which isn’t really explained, and at the end he tries his hardest to kill Todd.
Because i only read the first book, I don’t know what exactly his character arc is. And since its been a really long while, I don’t remember what he’s like in the novel regardless, other than the cliffhanger ending.
I did take a quick crashcourse  through the wiki and it turns out that Todd and Prentiss have a relationship in the later books, which the film sort of touches on, because Todd looks up to Prentiss in the film from the get go.
To be honest, I knew that the trilogy was a lot more complex, and even though I didn’t read the whole thing I knew it would be really disappointing for the fans to see the mayor be hollowed out to almost unrecognizable and not getting to see the whole picture on screen.
As for Davy Prentiss Jr., he was an asshole and stayed an asshole. I know he improves and gets killed off in the novels, so yeah, exhibit B of character foundations not being laid down because there isn’t gonna be a movie after this. Also, why is he played by Nick Jonas? Did they actually have more in mind for him when they decided to go with a Jonas brother or was it just star power?
As for Aaron...don’t have much to say about him, other than just being pretty weird fit to the film. I think he’s after Viola because he’s just that full of delusions but other than that, his character is just flat and useless. (I wish to the gods that writers would actually think instead of going with “religious delusion” to explain insanity) He only brought tension in a few scenes for the most part. I’m pretty sure that in the novel Todd and Aaron have a confrontation, like the final fight of the novel, and I’m 90% sure that its where the Novel gets the Knife of never Letting Go as its title, because the knife is big deal at that point. But I guess they wanted Viola to have a quick boss battle for the ending and set him on fire.
Ben and Cillian were fine. They did a good job, the actors were pretty great, I liked Cillian, and i like how they acknowledged that these dudes were family(i know that they’re gay and a couple but the film doesn’t say it outloud beyond letting them sleep in the same bed, be Todd’s parents, and having Ben hold Cillian in his arms) I get a kick out of the fact that the official reviews by Movie Critics are openly curious about why the film doesn’t make it more obvious that they’re gay, but whatever.
As for the overall plot, this is a fine example of mashing three books into one film and not having good results. Instead of going to Haven, the movie decided to shortcut the ending and go to the original ship that somehow has working tech but whatever, Viola needs to communicate to her ship. So not only do we not get the great relationship between Todd and Viola, not only do we not get the Spackle, Not only do we not get to see the noise of Manchee, not only do we have poor character adaptation, we also don’t get to have a plot that matches THE ONE BOOK THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO ADAPT. THEY HAD ONE FUCKING JOB AND THEY COULDN'T ADAPT THE ONE BOOK-
Its only so sad that they decided that this was going to be a one-shot deal because they didn’t have faith in the film and chose to have all the threads tied up. I mean, its so sad for the fans because the movie makes it very clear that we are not going to have anymore movies. sigh.
slight respect towards the film makers for tying up all the story threads instead of leaving them hanging. they did a neat job, even if it wasn’t a great one.
Anyway, maybe later on when google images has more than the promotional material I’ll do a review of only the good stuff this movie did, even if its a sad pathetic failure of an adaptation. Anyway this review is a bit of a mess and already so long so i’ll stop now.
May the gods give us strength against all the Tom Holland stans that will inevitably clog up the Chaos Walking tag with their Todd Hewitt x reader fanfics.
F9: What does Absurdity even mean anymore?
Due to COVID, I thought that my last movie theater experience was going to be "Bad Boys For Life". I'm happy to say that if I died today, I would be telling souls in Heaven that "F9" was the last movie I saw on the big screen (I'm sure that films are big talking points in the after life).
Tumblr media
There weren't too many people there:
There was a woman coughing in the corner; I barely looked at her. I imagined that COVID was mugging her, and I didn't want to be a witness, and so have COVID come after me next. I'm vaxxed, but still I was thinking of ways to distract COVID, so I could enjoy the film. There was an old couple sitting up front (like REALLY OLD... sitting UP FRONT... Ha! that's awesome). Awesome or not, I was going to point them out if COVID came after me. There were two obese kids sitting a few rows behind me that I could also point out, as well as my friend that I was sitting next to... what?? Look, they would ALL want me to escape, so I could bring my "F9" review to the people!
WHAT??!
Let's not talk about my survival skills, let's talk some Vin & the Fam - that's why we're here!
It took a while for me to remember what was going on:
Dom (Vin), Letty (M. Rod), and their... kid? Oh, right, they have a kid, and they moved on to start a new life together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Didn't the real mom die or something?? Idk. You've got the British lady from "GOT" still hanging out with Luda and Tyrese.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(they so crazy)
"Hobbs and Shaw" are still gone
Tumblr media
(making their own money, cuz bleep family!).
Brian (Paul Walker's character - rip) is apparently, now everyone's babysitter. So, if anyone in this gang, who could die on any of these missions, ever have kids, they can just send them off to Nanny Brian's.
There's a dude named Mr. Nobody who sometimes sends the gang on secret spy missions.
Oh, and people in the gang keep coming back from the dead. Boom! We're caught up with this absurdity. That's actually what I asked for when I got to the movies
"Give me one ticket for Absurdity please."
In this batch of the absurd, we find out that Dom has a brother, and he's John Cena (Jakob).
Tumblr media
Charlize Theron is back! That must have been the worst bet that she has ever lost. I consider her to be one of the most underrated and underappreciated actors we've got, but movies like these ain't helping that case.
Tumblr media
And who's idea was it to give her that haircut? - part of the bet she lost, I suppose.
It was reported that the gang goes into space (at least two of them do).
Annnnd the X-Men Jet is back!
Tumblr media
(it really does look like that - Wolverine included)
Seriously, after the X-Men's last two movies (which were turrrible), I was expecting them to crossover for a fresh start. Why not?? They're a spy team now, that goes to space! - nothing should be off the table.
They're looking for two halves of some... war sphere?? If put back together with some key... idk... John Cena rules the world.
Remember when Vin and the gang were all about street racing, money, survival, and brown booty? - those were simpler times!
But, why discuss the plot? Seriously, why? None of it makes any sense. From Dom and Letty living like Amish people (which is an ending worse than death for action heroes)
to their convoluted explanation for bringing the latest person back from the dead (which reminds me of a married couple, when the husband or wife get caught watching porn, and try to explain that it was just a pop-up that came out of nowhere. The other spouse gulps their glass of wine and plows forward - that was me with this - gulping my soda (with a lil Henny) saying "whatever guys, let's please just move on".
and  what's going on with the two brother's is a thin thread at best. AND the villain's motivation...
But, it's foolish to get into that., and take points off. I LOVE THESE MOVIES, but it ain't for the story. Let's grade "F9" by its own standards:
Racing, Action, and Family (they graduated from booty to family):
Racing
They've done the racing in a small city thing before, but this time it's with magnets! - SUPER MAGNETS!
YES!
I loved this! Cars are getting sucked into magnets. They're using them to make people fly away and explode. Which btw, they did my man Francis Ngannou wrong (an mma fighter). There's a fight scene with a giant white dude on top of a speeding vehicle. That giant white dude could have and should have been the role for Francis, instead he's just here to say high, and then blow up. As much as I loved these scenes, they were too quick in some areas. I think if they had slowed some of the magnet stuff down a bit, we could appreciate more what's happening.
Action
M.Rod is legit.
Tumblr media
She needs her own franchise. The only action star I enjoyed more than her was Vin, and that's really due to the absurdity of one scene. Do y'all remember the "Civil War" scene when Captain America has one hand on a building and another pulling back a helicopter??
Tumblr media
It's the same level of strength needed for what Vin does in some underground chambers. You can see a bit of it in the trailer. He pulls the whole place down, and then, just like in "Civil War", he ends up in the water (but unconscious). Oh, and he does this after beating up like 50 people at once. Ha! I love it! Then, how he is rescued (cuz c'mon, he can't die) is splendidly preposterous, and I mean that is a complimentary way. That scene is perfection.
The only action that bothers me comes from Dom's sister (mia).
Tumblr media
She just doesn't sell being a fighter, but whatever. No disrespect... she’s beautiful, but... her hair might weigh more than the rest of her body.
Apparently, the highest trained fighters (agents) in the world (who have GUNS) never trained for a unskilled, unprepared, 110 lb woman in her 40's with a frying pan.
Family & Corona
Tyrese and Luda are always funny, but their act is growing a bit thin. It actually felt like an act this time around. I think it's time to add another black man in the mix; perhaps one who's older than they are... TRACY MORGAN?
Tumblr media
Throw an OG in there and it'll freshen things up again. I do like though how Tyrese is starting to suspect that they might be immortals. I think they should test that theory out in the next movie; maybe have Tyrese break the fourth wall, kinda like Deadpool, as he realizes this is just a dumbass movie.
Dom and Letty's kid... terrible. I'm sorry! This is a bias of mine, but kids normally suck at acting. This one is no exception. Just get an older actor to play the young kid. I'm thinking Ryan Reynolds would have been a good choice.
Tumblr media
You may be saying "that's absurd!" - I'm glad that y'all can still tell what that word means, cuz I can't.
The rest of the chemistry family magic is great!
Oh, and Cardi is here, but... barely (for like 30 seconds, if that).
Tumblr media
No rapping, no wapping, no cursing... kind of a waste of Cardi B, if you ask me.
John Cena aka Jakob with a K!
Meh. JC def has charisma, just not in this movie. He doesn't stand out at all. You know?? - The Rock, Jason Statham, Charlize Theron, etc all have a presence about them in this franchise. Cena?! what happened, buddy?
There are certain music artists whom you'd think would have a great personality based off their music and how they dress. But, then you meet them, and you realize that they're just normal bozos like you and I (only rich and famous). And normal bozos like you and I, AT TIMES can be boring. You gotta have some flair if you're not going to have personality. Give my man some pink glittery highlights, a face tat, some vampire teeth, and maybe a chainsaw for his left arm or something.
Grade: Good action. The absurdities were funny. I was entertained! Production was great! BUT it's getting tired, my friends. It's the same formula that I've mentioned and then, like always, they're grilling and drinking Corona's in the sun. After nine movies (with at least two more on the way)... I never thought I'd say this, but it's actually not absurd enough. Wait... I seriously can't believe I just said that.
I need to say that again to know it's real.
This movie wasn't absurd.. enough? ENOUGH. IT WASN'T! They're going to need to step it up for the next two.
They were in space, but not for long. They raced for the most part in regular cars (regular for them). . You only brought ONE person back from the dead??! C'mon! We can do better.
I'm giving it an entertaining C+
I like that we saw different younger Dom's (during flashbacks) through time. I think that the next type of vehicle they bust out should be a DeLorean.
Y'all feel me?? TIME TRAVEL, baby!
Tumblr media
Vin and the gang race through time! They can have Tracy Morgan. They'll each have a younger version (or older) of themselves join the group. Cardi B will actually do something this time - maybe turn into a car!
And maybe Cable shows up as they tie it to Marvel.
Tumblr media
Think bigger, Vin!
I thought that I've been hurt before
But no one's ever left me quite this sore
Benny was watching an MMA tournament, checking out his competition for his tournament next month. Will was there with him, watching the matches with his keen eyes. Benny was… easily distracted to say the least. He smiled flirtatiously at many women who passed by him. At one point he noticed a group of women, standing off to the side. Most of them had a guy with them, all except one.
As he looked at her, he could tell she looked extremely bored. She had her arms crossed; her foot was tapping. She kept checking her phone for either the time or something to give her an escape.
After a moment, a guy joined her, handing her a clear solo cup of beer. She smiled tensely at him and would duck under his arm anytime he tried to wrap it around her. She eventually, handed the drink to one of her girlfriends, and said something to excuse herself. He watched as she walked over to the concession stand. That was when he decided to make his move.
Your words cut deeper than a knife
Now I need someone to breathe me back to life
You were idly standing by the concession stand, pretending to look over the menu. You were not thrilled to be there, and just wanted to leave as soon as possible.
While you were standing there, a guy stood nearby you. You glanced at him from the corner of your eye. You noticed he was pretty handsome. Brown hair, blue eyes, a light amount of scruff, and well built.
“Having a hard time deciding what to get?” You hear him ask, as he stepped a little closer, so you could hear him.
“Oh yeah. So hard to chose between popcorn, a corndog, or a hotdog. What would you recommend?” You asked, chuckling at the situation.
“Uhh. Nothing from here. I would recommend only eating this food, if you had a lot of liquor and no taste buds left,” He joked scratching the back of his head.
You crinkled your nose in slight disgust.
“I’m Benny. What’s your name?” He asked.
You tell him yours and he smiled brightly.
“So. Don’t take this the wrong way, but this doesn’t seem to be your scene? Or rather… you don’t look thrilled to be here,” He gently probed, wanting to know.
Just like a moth drawn to a flame
Oh, you lured me in I couldn't sense the pain
“Oh. Um. Blind date. I hate it. Him. He’s rather touchy, and he’s just boring. My friends thought this was a good idea. After my ex broke up with me because I “wasn’t there enough.” I’m a med student. Sorry my life doesn’t revolve around you,” She informed him with an eyeroll.
“Oh? Med student? Nice. Good to know,” He teased.
“How is that good to know?” She questioned, staring at him confused.
“I’m a fighter. Uh. I have a tournament next month. So, I’m here with my brother to check out my competition. It’s nice to know a pretty doctor is all,” Benny tells her, feeling slightly awkward, thinking he overstepped.
She shook her head with a small smile, thinking he was cute.
“A fighter eh? You any good?” She asked him, biting her lip.
“Come to my tournament next month. You’ll see. Maybe I can…take you to dinner after?” Benny asked charmingly.
She smiled, looking down. She looked over at her group of friends who were apparently waiting on her. She pulled out her phone, quickly unlocking it.
“Put your number in, and text me the details,” She requested.
Benny gave her a 1000-watt smile, as he input his number, sending a text to himself, and saving himself as a contact.
He felt his phone buzz as he received the messaged.
“I’ll see ya then,” Benny stated, pressing a kiss to her cheek quickly.
He ran back over to his brother and looked back to see her still standing where he left her. Her hand was gently touching where he kissed her, and he could see her smiling softly.
Will simply rolled his eyes and shook his head at him.
Your bitter heart cold to the touch
Now I'm gonna reap what I sow
It had been a week since that day, and you were nervous as you stared at your phone. You wanted to talk to Benny again. You didn’t want to wait a month. You opened up the chat he created, laughing at the name he gave himself.
“Hot Stuff”
You sent him a message simply saying ‘hi.’
Seconds later you got a response. ‘hey! How are you?’
‘I’m well. I... hope I didn’t catch you at a bad time? I just wanted to talk to you again’
‘Oh really? How did the rest of your date go with Mr. Boring?’
‘It didn’t. I ran when he went to the bathroom. He apparently thinks it was a magical date. I told him I wasn’t ready for anything more.’
‘lol. Poor guy. Shame he couldn’t see that you hated it. His loss is my gain tho’
‘Oh. Is that so? What did you gain, besides someone to tend to your wounds?’
‘A beautiful girlfriend? If you’re interested?’
She paused at that. She could feel her face warm up a bit. She bit her lip as she typed out her response.
‘Wouldn’t that imply you have to take me on a few dates before receiving that title?’
‘What are you doing for the next 3 weekends up till my fight?’
She laughed at that before typing out a response.
I'm left seeing red on my own
Got a feeling that I'm going under
The month passed by quickly. Benny had taken you out every weekend: movies, lunch/dinner, walks around the park. He made every date feel relaxed and easy. You didn’t feel like you had to be on guard or put on a façade. He made you forget about all about your dumb ex and was very supportive of your learning.
One date, he actually helped you create flashcards and study for an upcoming exam. Something Brian would never do. He always felt that the attention should be 100% on him, and to hell with your education.
Benny even made copies of your study notes, so he could quiz you randomly throughout the day.  Something you appreciated greatly, because it kept the info fresh in her mind. When the exam day came around, Benny sent you flowers and candy wishing you luck. About 2 hours later, you were turning the test in online, which automatically gave you a score. 100%.
You immediately called Benny, excited, “Benny! I aced it! Thank you so much for your help!”
“Congrats baby! I knew you would ace it! Shall we… celebrate? I’ll bring over food, and we can watch movies?” He offered somewhat shyly.
“Yes! I would love that! But wait… Weren’t you supposed to hang out with your brother and friends tonight?” You asked thinking back to a previous conversation.
“I could cancel with them, it’s not a big deal,” Benny said nonchalantly.
“No. Don’t do that. They are your family. How about we celebrate after your fight on Saturday?” You countered, not wanting him to change his plans just for you.
“Alright. If you’re sure?” He asked wanting to confirm.
“I’m sure. Bye babe,” You tell him as you hang up.
“Bye!” He chirped.
But I know that I'll make it out alive
If I quit calling you my lover
Saturday rolled around fast, and after a rush of getting your badge that gave you VIP access, you were searching for someone familiar. As you were searching, a blonde man appeared before you.
“Hey Doc. I’m Will. C’mon. Benny wants to see you, seems to think you’ll bring him good luck,” Will’s voice was slightly deeper and raspier than Benny’s.
As you looked at him, you could see the resemblance between the two of them. You followed him toward the back, where the locker rooms were located. He led you down a hallway and to a room about midway. Benny was in the middle of bandaging his hands, rather poorly.
“Stop. I have no idea what you’re doing but stop,” You command moving forward.
You grabbed the bandages, undoing his work.
“No wonder you keep busting your hands. Who taught you how to wrap?” You asked him as you wrapped them properly.
You heard several chuckles.
“We keep telling him, but he refuses to listen,” Came a deep voice to your right.
You glance at the man, one of two Latino men who stood nearby. The one who talked was the kind who looked painfully handsome and knew it. The other, who wore a cap, looked sweet and was shaking his head at the scene he was seeing.
“You’re legit the only person he’s ever let touch those wraps. Us? The men he spent years in the army with? Oh no. We know nothing,” He teased, lightly shoving Benny.
“You should listen to them more often. They were correct,” You lightly admonished as you finished wrapping both of his hands.
“Hey, you’re supposed to be on my side!” Benny exclaimed, as he tested his hands, making fists.
“Says who?” You asked him teasingly. “So, who is on the lineup?”
Will handed you the list of fighters that were supposed to be there. As you looked at the list, you noticed the first fight Benny had was against Brian Holden… Your ex.
You snorted. Loudly.
Move on
Needle and the thread
“What? What’s so funny?” Benny asked watching her reaction.
“Just... do me a favor. Your first fight? Make sure you not only win, but make sure it hurts,” She requested handing the list back to Will.
He glanced at the list and chuckled when he recognized the name. The match was in a few minutes and he had a feeling he was going to enjoy it.
Gotta get you outta my head
Gonna wind up dead
They walked out and as Benny was announced, you and the guys made your way to your seats upfront. Benny got in the cage with your ex and you were snickering.
Will leaned over as the fight began, and stated, “He really likes you, you know?”
You turned to face with a smile, “I like him a lot too. He makes me very happy.”
“He… he falls pretty hard, pretty fast. Do me a favor? Don’t break his heart, yeah?” Will requested.
“I don’t plan too,” You assured him, turning your attention back to the match, to cheer Benny on.
“WHOOOO! GO BENNY!” You cheered as Benny landed several hits onto Brian.
“They don’t allow chairs, or anything do they?” You asked all of three of them.
The three of them laughed, before Frankie, as you found out, “No. It’s not wrestling. It’s MMA, there is a bit more class here.”
“Damn. Oh well,” You said, in mock disappointment.
The fight took about 15 minutes and Benny came out on top. As Benny stepped out, he walked over to them and you hugged him in congrats.
“You did great!” You tell him.
You looked him over really quickly and noticed he had a busted lip.
“Ooh. Ouch. Does that hurt?” You ask him, digging into your bag.
He goes to answer but stopped when he watches you pull out a small med-bag.
“You.. came prepared I see?” Benny noted with a smile.
“Just… some small things. Is that weird?” You asked concerned.
“No. No it’s not weird. Let’s get to the locker room and you can tend to me,” Benny tells her appreciating the gesture.
You watch me bleed until I can't breathe
I'm shaking, falling onto my knees (falling on my knees)
A couple hours later, and few more scrapes, the tournament was over. Benny came in first and was super happy. The five of you made your way to a local bar, and order food and drinks.
“So. What do ya think of my fighting skills now?” Benny asked taking a drink of beer, basking in his win.
“Mh. You’re good. Could be better,” You teased, hiding your smile in your drink.
“OhHo! What?” Benny exclaimed pulling you to him, his hands running up your sides, tickling you.
You laughed loudly, as you squirmed away.
“Brian used to make me watch all sorts of MMA tournaments. Said it helped him get in the zone or something. I always thought it was kind of boring to be honest,” You admitted once he finally stopped.
“And now?” Benny prompted.
“I… could find a reason or two to find it enjoyable… So long as I’m not patching you up every time you forget to dodge or block a very obvious punch,” You stated with a raised eyebrow.
The guys laughed at that and as Benny dramatically clutched at his heart.
As they talked, someone strolled up next to you.
“Thought you hated fighting?” Came the somewhat nasally voice of your ex, Brian.
“No. I thought it was boring because you never bothered to explain anything. Plus. You always felt the need to interrupt my study time with a match that I just ‘had to watch.’ There’s a difference,” You replied annoyed, not even bothering to look at him.
“Don’t be a bitch. So, what you are with this asshole now?” Brian questioned, grabbing you and making you turn.
You moved to shove his hand off of you, but Will got in between you two, shoving him away. Benny also, moved to place you behind him.
“Get out. You put your hands on her again, and a busted nose will be the least of your concerns,” Will threatened.
Brian turned, acting like he was going to leave before, he swiftly turned back throwing a punch. Will dodged easily. All four of them were gearing up for a throw down but you were sick of it already.
You reached into your medical bag and pulled out your scalpel.
“BRIAN!” You shouted his name to get his attention.
He turned to you and paused when he saw the knife in your hand.
“As you very well know, I am very good with this small sharp object. Get away from me now. Stay away from me. Or I will CUT you,” You warned him brandishing it to him.
He stared at you for a moment before quickly moving away, tripping over a chair as he did so.
You put the knife back into your bag, and all four of the guys stared at you.
“What?” You asked innocently.
Benny reacted first, with loud laughter. “That… that was hot. Terrifying. But hot.”
The others shook their heads and retook their seats.
“Appears, your girl doesn’t need a knight Benny. She can handle herself quite well,” Santi remarked.
“Yeah. She’s more of a knight than you are,” Frankie teased.
“Oh yeah. What does that make me then?” Benny demanded as he pressed a kiss to your face, wrapping his arms around you.
You looked at the guys, and they you, all four of you stating at the same time, “Jester.”
You all laughed at Benny’s pout, and you pressed a kiss to his lips.
“But a very cute Jester,” You try to placate.
“That sounds too similar to “very cute moose,”” He said suspiciously.
“You… remember that line from Princess Diaries 2? Really?” You asked with a giggle.
“It was the funniest part of the movie,” He mumbled looking away.
“Wait… You got him to watch what now?” Santi asked.
The rest of the evening was spent talking about some of your previous dates, while the guys told you funny stories.
You enjoyed the evening and looked forward to more dates and nights out with all of them. Benny came into your life unexpectantly but you wouldn’t trade him for the world.
And now that I'm without your kisses (without you)
I'll be needing stitches (and I'll be needing stitches)
Tripping over myself
Aching, begging you to come help (begging baby please)
Perhaps you should have known it was coming after the second time the flight got delayed. Nearing on two hours past your departure time and with a monsoon brewing past the windows outside, it was a wonder anyone at the gate was still holding onto hope. That was, until the moment the young gate agents with cheeks burning bright red announced that your flight had been canceled.
In most circumstances, you wouldn’t have been relieved as you were in that moment, standing in a never-ending line extending out into the middle of the walkway with disgruntled, stranded passengers grumbling under their breath and arguing amongst one another.
Most circumstances didn’t involve you flying to Atlanta to attend the wedding of the last and only man to break your heart.
You stood behind a rather tall man in a dark navy business suit, carrying a leather briefcase and tapping his toe incessantly as the single gate agent attempted to address the needs of the completely booked flight currently waiting in line. The man in the suit was barking orders at what seemed to be a poor intern on the other end of the phone as he nudged an elderly woman ahead of him to take a step forward the very second the line moved up.
With a roll of your eyes, you took a sip from the burning hot coffee you’d purchased shortly after the second delay, despite the fact that it had been nearing 11:00pm at the time. You seemed to be the only one who was mildly relieved by the cancelation and threat of spending an overnight stay in the Charlotte airport, though that didn’t surprise you much. Still, you didn’t much mind the possibility that you would have a genuine, no-fault-of-your-own, entirely-mother-nature’s-curse, excuse to avoid your ex’s wedding.
Then, carrying gently between the aggravated conversations around you, the soft humming of someone standing behind you pulled you from your daze.
You didn’t dare turn around, but you listened intently, caught up in the low vibrations of his voice, not entirely in key, but charming, and sweet. It sat in sharp contrast to the chaos surrounding you to hear something so relaxed, at ease, amongst the panic and frustration.
The coffee was still hot on your lips and you winced as it passed on your tongue. The man ahead of you folded his arms over his chest, relentlessly making a show of looking up and around those ahead of him to prove he had better things to do, to show that he was impatient and clearly irritated by his situation as he was the only one with somewhere to be.
Those ahead of him weren’t much better; the lot of them all on the phone with representatives from the airlines and demanding their money back, demanding answers for next available flights, and blaming poor customer service for their troubles as if it was the gate agent’s fault that a monsoon had plundered its way through North Carolina.
“What a bunch of barbarians,” the voice behind you chuckled under his breath, the humming pausing for only a moment. His tone was like honey and you found yourself smiling, suppressing the subtle movement of your shoulders as you laughed quietly to yourself at his comment.
“Bet the guy at the desk is going to lose his shit in about two minutes,” he said to himself, though you wondered briefly if he was talking to someone next to him or behind him, or maybe even you, though you didn’t dare to turn around. No one else responded to his commentary.
You glanced up ahead to who he seemed to be referring to, to find a middle-aged man in khaki slacks and a light blue polo, gripping a newspaper harshly in one hand and tapping his knuckles against the counter top with the other. His face was beet red, jaw clenching, and starring daggers into the poor gate agent.
It barely took longer than a few seconds before the man slammed his fist down onto the countertop, causing you to flinch in response. The honey-voiced man behind you chuckled under his breath, clearly amused by the aggressive reactions of those around him.
You found yourself wanting to turn over your shoulder, to steal a glance at the man with the sweetest sounding voice, even in off-key humming, who laughed in times of chaos and didn’t seem to be bothered at all to be standing in a seemingly never-ending line nearing midnight in the middle of Charlotte Douglas International.
In your brief moment of distraction, you didn’t notice the man in the suit take a sharp step back in reflex to the person at the front of the line waving their hands about, setting off a chain reaction of passengers flinching away from the scene. His elbow slammed down into the lid of your coffee and it slipped from your fingers with a gasp.
The cup fell to the floor in the kind of slow motion you see in the movies, like maybe if you reached out in time you could have grabbed it mid-air, but instead the cardboard cup slammed to the tile and the coffee spewed from the top as the lid broke away, dousing the pant legs of the man in the suit ahead of you. He yelped, jumping away from you and shoving you back with a harsh thrust.
Unsteady on your feet from the shock of it, you fell back into person behind you, into the man with the honey voice and the amusing observations. He caught you before you hit the ground with his arms hooked under yours, smelling of something like warmth and comfort and flannel and fireplaces, before you even caught sight of his face.
Blue eyed. The damned near bluest eyes you’d ever seen in your life and they were gentle, kind, like they were painted with care with several shades from the Mediterranean Sea and a cloudless sky and the petals of an iris. Bristles of scruff on his cheeks and dark brown hair brushed up in sweeps away from his eyes. He smiled softly at you, reassuringly, as he helped you back to your feet.
“You alright?” he asked softly and you nodded, just about lost in the smooth tone of his voice, up until the moment suit-man let out an aggravated howl.
“Look what you’ve done!” the man shouted, grabbing at the backs of his pant legs in disgust and sending darting glares at you.
Your lips parted to say something, but you were never good under pressure, not with so many wondering eyes looking over in your direction, whispering to one another, pointing and staring. Cheeks burning red and heating all the way down your neck, you felt a pang of embarrassment, of shame. You bent down quickly to retrieve the empty cup, stepping away from the pool of coffee on the floor.
“I’m-- I’m sorry, sir, I didn’t--”
“You didn’t mean to?” he scoffed, rolling his eyes dramatically. “Do you have any idea how much this suit costs?! Probably more than a month of your salary, sweetheart!”
“Hey man, back off! It was clearly an accident,” blue-eyes interjected from behind you, carefully side stepping around you to put himself in the cross hairs. “It was your elbow that knocked it out of her hand in the first place.”
The man glared at blue-eyes, studying him up as if he was determining if carrying on this fight was worth it with a man at least a decade younger and a build twice his size. He seemed to only be eager to kick and yell and fight when it was at a target without much of a will for defense, someone like you. You clenched your jaw, hating how easily you fell into that trap.
“Goddamn millennials,” the man in the suit grumbled under his breath, narrowing his eyes on you one last time before he turned his attention back to the front of the line. You let out a heavy sigh, the relief pouring through you almost instantly. You gripped the empty cup in your hand until it bent and crumpled at the center.
“What an asshole,” blue-eyes grumbled next to you, offering you a soft kind of smile that still managed to crinkle up by his eyes. He glanced down at the cup folding under your tight grip. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah,” you replied slowly, though you kept an extra foot of distance between you and the man in the suit, even as he took a step forward when the line moved. “Thanks for that, by the way. You didn’t have to say anything.”
“Sure, I did. Chivalry still exists, you know,” blue-eyes said, that charmingly smooth tone of his voice running almost in shivers up your spine.
“Not in my experience,” you muttered under your breath, uncertain if he could hear you, though he raised an eyebrow, his smile faltering somewhat. If he heard you, he didn’t say anything.
You waited for what felt like another hour before you made it to the front of the line. The gate agent looked exhausted and practically winced at you stepped up, as if he was preparing himself for another verbal attack, but you were soft spoken and patient with him, a kind of change he wasn’t expecting.
Blue-eyes was on your right, talking with the second agent who had rushed up to the counter to assist. You could feel him glance over at you every few moments as you complimented the agent on his organization and calmness under pressure, getting the young man to laugh nervously in response.
The gate agent smiled a bit as he handed you a tentative flight and instructed you to listen to the overhead monitors for any changes. You nodded as you took the new ticket and grabbed your bag, getting ready to go find a quiet place by yourself to mentally prepare for facing this weekend after the nightmare it was already starting out on.
Attending your ex’s wedding was already a worst case scenario on its own. Now you’d have to show up with less than a few hours night rest, if any at all. You were sure you’d hear comments circulating about the bags under your eyes and the exhaustion plated on your face they’d no doubt attribute to remorse for a relationship that was kinder in your memories than it was in real life.
You started to make your way out to the walkway when you heard a voice call out behind you.
“Wait, hold up!”
You turned over your shoulder to find blue-eyes finishing up at the counter and swinging his bag over his shoulder, a new ticket in his right hand. He jogged a few paces to catch up with you as you stilled.
“Any chance you’ll let me replace that coffee?” he asked with a warm smiling brimming on his lips.
“What?” you gaped.
You glanced down at your faded leggings, worn sneakers, and flannel hanging loosely over your shoulders. You didn’t consider yourself the type that men approached for that sort of thing, especially men with eyes that blue and a voice like honey.
“I figure it’s going to be a long night and finding sleep in a place like this is almost impossible,” he chuckled nervously, scratching at the back of his neck, “so why not stock up on caffeine? I know a café in Terminal C with a halfway decent blend and its usually pretty empty.”
“Oh,” you muttered anxiously, cheeks heating red because a man that gorgeous couldn't possibly be serious. The suspicion was already creeping up through your stomach, screaming at you that he was like the rest of them, like he was exactly like your ex, that he would hurt you or that he was looking for repayment of some kind. You didn’t have much experience of anything else. “Well, I don’t-- I don’t know--”
“You can say no,” he offered quickly, though he winced as he said it. “Of course, you know you can say no. What I mean is, you can tell me to ‘eff off’ and I’ll leave you alone, but I just thought... I thought that guy was a jerk and he ruined a perfectly good full cup of coffee and if you wanted, I’m happy to get you a new one. I just—I figured that your night is already pretty shitty with the flights being grounded and then that sonuvabitch -- who didn’t even apologize -- yelled at you for no reason and--” he grimaced. “I’m rambling. Sorry.”
You watched him carefully, studied the way he fumbled over his words, his cheeks turning a soft shade of pink, even through the light scratches of his beard. It was almost endearing. You hadn’t seen a man blush like that before. There was a lingering kind of sadness behind the ocean blue of his eyes you couldn’t quite place and it drew you in unlike anything else.
“Terminal C, huh?” you asked, pulling the nerves from your voice the best you could and his smile lit up again instantly.
“Yeah, Terminal C. It’s a bit of a walk, as long as you don’t mind?” he said, lugging his bag over his shoulder and gesturing for you to follow him out into the hall.
“Don’t got much else to do,” you shrugged, surprised that you found yourself smiling as you strolled up next to him.
He had a comforting kind of ease to him and you wondered why he also seemed to be relieved by cancelations. You had your reasons and looking around at the frustrated looks on bystanders faces as you walked by, the arguments amongst family members, the children crying, you couldn’t help but question why blue-eyes didn’t seem to be bothered at all.
“My name’s Bucky, by the way,” he said as he stepped aside at the moving walkway, letting you pass by him to take the first step. He slid onto the walkway behind you with one step.
“Well, it’s nice to be meet you, Bucky,” you replied sincerely, leaning against the right side of the railing as the floor beneath you carried you slowly down the hallway. You had the time to be leisurely and let the walkway move for you.
In the brief moment of silence that followed, Bucky was smiling as he stared at the floor, stealing glances over at you like he was waiting for something. You were about to ask him what he was looking at until he asked, “do I get the pleasure of your name as well, or should we save that for later?”
You laughed, the nervousness offsetting the embarrassment of completely forgetting obvious social cues. Gripping at the edge of the railing, you watched as he stared out into the sea of people as you rode by, smiling softly at the kids who were curled up under their parents’ coats draped over them in blankets and laughing, almost impressed, at the teenagers who had started gathering in a circle, all huddled around their portable games.
Pushing out a kind of confidence you hadn’t known in years, you said, “you buy me that coffee you were talking about and maybe I’ll give you a name.”
Bucky grinned, turning back to face you, clearly amused by your answer. “You’ve got yourself a deal.”
Walking at a leisurely pace, it took a half hour before Bucky gestured for you to stop in front of a small café tucked into the corner next to one of the empty gates, lights barely illuminated with a single staff member hunched behind the counter on his cell phone. The tables were empty and it looked like no one had been there all day with the shelves of to-go items fully stocked.
“Welcome to the best coffee in the Charlotte Airport,” Bucky grinned, extending his arm out like he was showing off a new car. You narrowed your eyes on his, pursing you lips and he dropped his hand, chuckling lightly. “I never said it was particularly good, but it’s not terrible. Plus, we’ve got the place to ourselves if you allow me to stick around.”
“You want to?” you asked, cursing yourself for how timid you sounded. Another thing to blame your ex for. The ex whose wedding you’re supposed to be attending tomorrow. Goddamnit.
“Don’t got much else to do,” he shrugged, repeating your words from when he had asked you to come with him in the first place with a teasing kind of smile that made your stomach twist into knots.
You nudged him hard in the side, laughing, and he stumbled away a few paces, grinning wildly until it crinkled up by his eyes. You wondered if you’d ever seen a man more beautiful in your life, though you pushed the thought away quickly.
Bucky jogged up to the front counter, gathering the attention of the teenager on his phone as he slowly glanced up, slipping his phone into his pockets.
“What can I get you?” the kid asked, voice low and slow, like he’d just woken up from a nap.
“Anything fancy for you or keep it simple?” Bucky turned back, asking over his shoulder. You gave him your order and he smiled at it, ordering one of the same. The teenager didn’t seem to be amused by Bucky’s charming smile and huffed an exasperated sigh as he started to make the drinks.
“You sure you don’t mind?” you asked as Bucky handed over his card.
“It’s just a coffee, doll. I don’t mind at all,” he said, the pet name rolling off his tongue as if it didn’t mean much of anything. It left a burning, twisting ache in your stomach and a heat in your cheeks, forcing you to nervously tug and pull your hair behind your ear.
You wondered if it was a name he gave for any woman whose name he hadn’t yet learned; perhaps, the same way older men called waitresses ‘sweetheart’ or the way the man in the suit had so patronizingly taunted it at you earlier, though there wasn’t even a hint of a condescending tone in Bucky’s voice. It was genuine. He was genuine.
You thanked him and followed him to the small table tucked in the corner of the café, away from the hall though with enough of a vantage point to watch for stranded passengers as they walked by. Terminal C seemed to be pretty empty so there wasn’t much chance for that, though he told you he liked to take every opportunity to people watch as he could. There was just something so fascinating about how strangers acted when they weren’t putting on a show, when they were at ease, purely themselves.
You set your new ticket on the table, keeping a watchful eye of the flight number like the attendant had instructed you to in case any changes were made overhead. Bucky did the same and you noticed they put him on a separate flight. The ounce of disappointment didn’t slip your notice but you shoved it aside.
“The departure board’s got more red on it than green,” Bucky said as he settled into his chair, “might be time to seek food and shelter and buckle in for a long night.”
“You sure you’re in Charlotte Douglas and not the Hunger Games?” you laughed, adjusting your bag next to your feet.
“You’ve never endured an overnight in Charlotte, have you?” he countered teasingly.
You shook your head and he let out a heavy sigh, though a smile brimmed on his cheeks, almost like he was excited.
“The hotel’s already booked up by now and as soon as these people realize they’re not getting a flight out of here until tomorrow morning, hell is gonna break lose,” he informed you, carefully watching a family of five as they passed by hand in hand out in the walkway. The father had an anxious kind of look on his face every time he glanced at the youngest of the children as if he was expecting for the boy to realize at any second he wasn’t going to be in his bed tonight with his favorite stuffed animals. He was a ticking time bomb.
“We’ve got about an hour left before the food joints start shutting down and then after that, nothing until six-thirty sharp,” Bucky continued, “Plus, you figure you need to secure an outlet or two and a decent place to sleep, if you’re able to do that sort of thing in a place like this.”
“Good lord,” you exhaled, crossing your arms over your chest as you smirked at him, “guess you better get started.”
“Oh, I am,” he replied casually with a shrug. “Step one is securing alliances.”
You narrowed your eyes on him, scouring his face for signs that he was mocking you and searching behind him for a hoard of his buddies hanging over his shoulder snickering to themselves as their friend messed with the sad girl alone at the airport, you came up completely empty.
“You’re actually serious?” you gaped.
He nodded. “Of course. I’ve already got the caffeine and the ally. We’ll need to secure some snacks next. When you’re ready, of course. Though, we do have a time restraint here so don’t be too long with your coffee.”
“Well, for one, I can take this on the go,” you joked, lifting up your coffee with a teasing grin.
“See how well that went last time though? Can’t risk running into any other asshole businessmen in expensive suits worth a month of your salary, sweetheart!” Bucky mimed eccentrically, trying to mock the voice of the man in the suit but failing halfway through in a fit of laughter.
“Okay, fine,” you conceded, removing the lid to your cup and letting the steam loose. You sighed at the fresh smell of coffee as it filled your lungs and warmth spread through you before you could even take a sip. “So, we stay here for a bit and finish our drinks. Then we’ll find snacks. Then what?”
Bucky shook his head, taking a sip of his coffee before he spoke again. The content sigh that followed sent shivers up your spine. “Don’t get too ahead of yourself, doll. It’s a process.”
“Naturally,” you agreed with a smile on your lips so wide it ached in your cheeks.
Bucky sighed, leaning back into his chair, glancing out into the walkway and studying those who passed by. He was so content, so unbothered by the cancellation, as he casually sipped his coffee, stealing glances over in your direction every so often, you couldn’t help the curiosity as it built up.
“So, you were going to Atlanta, too?” you asked before you took another sip of the steaming coffee.
“Trying to. It’s been, uh, it’s been a while since I’ve gone down there,” he replied, though his smile faltered a bit before he could catch it. You narrowed your eyes on him, surprised by his reaction, though you didn’t push it at all. He cleared his throat, pushing it back out though it didn’t quite reach his eyes. “How's the coffee?”
“Wonderful now that it’s not covering the back of a furious businessman’s suit,” you responded, taking another sip. Bucky chuckled under his breath and you found yourself missing the soft glimmer behind his eyes. It returned when you asked him about the last time he’d been stranded in Charlotte, as he clearly had experience with it.
He spent the next half hour telling you every ridiculous story you couldn’t have made up if you tried about the bizarre things he’d witnessed at three in the morning walking around the terminals and what kinds of trouble he got in back in his younger days with the airport security for doing cartwheels down the halls.
“Cartwheels?” you laughed, struggling to keep your breath as your eyes watered. “You can’t be serious…”
Bucky was beaming as he nodded, all blue eyes and pink lips and chocolate colored hair raking through his fingers. He pointed over your shoulder to an open space by the escalator.
“I crashed into the railing right over there,” he nodded, then gesturing to his hip bone, “it landed me a bruise for a few months right on my side.”
“How old were you?” you asked, struggling to contain your laughter enough to take another sip of your coffee that was already room temperature.
Bucky scratched the back of his neck, cheeks red, and so incredibly adorable it was simply unfair. “Twenty-one.”
“Of course, you were.” You shook your head, watching as he hid behind his coffee cup as he took a big gulp, evading your eyes and glancing over to the open space like he was caught up in memories.
“So, what about you?” he asked as he set his coffee down again. “You ever been stranded here?”
“Fortunately not,” you shrugged, finishing off your drink with a content sigh. You glanced over at the clock, wondering how so much time had passed without even realizing it. It had been ages since you’d felt that way around someone.
“Sounds like you're in need of some Charlotte layover tradition then, doll,” Bucky grinned, something mischievous brewing in his head as he chugged back the rest of his lukewarm coffee and tossed the cup into the nearest trash with a full layup stance. He did the same with yours. “Come with me.”
He extended his hand to you as he stood, long lifelines extending along his palm and you noticed a sliver of marred scarring peeking out behind the sleeve of his over-shirt. You narrowed your eyes on it, curious, but he pushed down the fabric nervously.
“Please, doll. I promise it’ll be fun,” he urged, not letting his hand drop away even as you eyed him reluctantly.
“How do you know my idea of fun? You still don’t know my name,” you teased, having already decided to take up his offer the moment he extended his hand but it was so incredibly endearing to watch his nerves on display.
“Oh, I know, but I’m confident you’ll tell me soon enough,” he said, grinning wildly as you slipped your hand into his regardless. Firm and rough, with callouses on his hands like he’d spent years in service and labor jobs, but gentle like he was holding something precious as he helped you stand. An enigma.
The teenager behind the counter had been watching you with an irritable look on his face and you nudged Bucky’s side as he picked up both of your bags in his free hand. Bucky followed your gaze and then took a quick glance at the clock before he started to laugh, pulling you towards the hall.
“Think we overstayed our welcome here,” he grimaced, nodding to his watch that read it was past midnight. “Coffee shop was supposed to close ten minutes ago.”
“Oh no,” you pouted, turning back to the cashier with an apologetic smile as you called, “sorry about that!” over your shoulder.
Bucky led you to the center of the hall. Around you were a few stranded passengers from flights heading out west, all looking like they’ve been kicked and dragged through the mud. Meanwhile, Bucky was smiling like he just won the lottery. You didn’t realize his hand was still gripped in yours until he dropped your bags beside him with a heavy thud and he let go.
He took in a deep breath, sending a wink in your direction as he took a single step away from you and pushed his hands out into the sky, swing his momentum around in an acrobatic swing that was admittingly quite awful, with bent legs and wobbling landing, but... a cartwheel.
Holy shit, he was serious.
A few random passengers lying on the floor had propped up to look in his direction before turning over to ignore him. Bucky wiped his hands on his pants as he grimaced at the dirt he’d collected. He nodded at a woman in high heels as she walked past giving him a strange look of both disgust and attraction. She might have been eyeing him before he went and did that ridiculous cartwheel, but a man that handsome had some allowances for odd behavior, didn’t he? She seemed to think so, but Bucky paid her no mind as he turned back to you.
“Your turn.”
“Absolutely not,” you scoffed, laughing nervously as you took a step back.
“Absolutely, yes,” Bucky retorted, grabbing your hands and tugging you to the spot where he was just standing. “This is tradition, doll. You can’t mess with a tradition.”
“Do you realize how insane you sound?” you accused, though you were smiling so wide it started to hurt in your cheeks. His hands were still on yours and his lifted them above your head, nudging your feet with his shoes to get you in starting position.
“You’ve done a cartwheel before, haven’t you?”
“Of course,” you shot back, “back when I was fifteen, Bucky!”
He grinned, stepping back and letting go of your hands. “Then you’ll be perfect. Just like riding a bike.”
“Yeah, I don’t think it’s the same thing,” you mumbled, blushing as a middle-aged couple walked by and rolled their eyes at the two of you. Bucky must have noticed.
“Don’t worry about them, doll,” Bucky said quietly, arms folded over his chest as he planted his feet, waiting patiently. He smiled softly at you, the overly confident and borderline cartoonish character falling away for a moment and you found yourself lost in shades of blue you could have drowned in if he’d let you.
Shit. You shook your head, tearing your eyes away from his. Stop thinking like that.
Do the damn cartwheel.
Bucky rubbed his hands together in anticipation and you closed your eyes. One deep breath in, you held it in your lungs as you propelled yourself onto your hands, touching the ground with the full of your weight for only a second before you were on your feet again.
Guess it was like riding a bike.
“That’s what I’m talking about!” Bucky shouted, drawing the attention of the very irritated passengers attempting to sleep in the corner of the hall. It was still midnight, after all. But in the mist of his energy and the way he was smiling at you and rushing towards you to high-five your hands now covered in a thin layer of dirt, you couldn’t bring it in yourself to care about the wondering eyes of the stranded observers.
“We better get those snacks before the shop closes,” he said, turning to you with a massive smile.
How was it possible to so easily get lost in the eyes of a stranger you hardly knew? Blue and grey waves sharper and softer than that of the ocean. Pink in his lips that drew you in and you didn’t realize you were staring until he grabbed your hand, tugging you along.
You started to laugh as he dragged you down the hall, not letting go of your hand as he led you down to a corner store with walls lined with snacks. He grinned like a kid in a candy store and gestured for you to walk in like it was a five-star restaurant. The fact that he waved at the cashier who returned his greeting in a familiar smile didn’t slip your notice.
“Do you know him?” you asked, following Bucky further into the store to the back wall lined with snacks, in past the magazines and novelty t-shirts.
“Charlie and I go way back,” he nodded, strolling carefully through the aisles, hands clasped behind his back as he contemplated his choices and he glanced back up at you, smiling that sweet smile that made your stomach twist. Though he paused as he said, “I used to get trapped here overnight a lot growing up.”
He lost his smile a bit as he spoke and it surprised you, unsure of what kind of memory he was thinking back to that could possibly take even a sliver of his smile away from him. You grabbed a bag of your favorite chips from the wall and tossed it over at him. They hit him straight in the chest and he caught them before they fell, the smile returning quickly as he looked over at you with a feigned look of offense.
He grabbed a few bags off the wall after careful selection and raised them up for your approval. You nodded at every choice, except for the bag of jerky he’d held up teasingly. Once he’d gathered enough to fill his arms, a solid mix of salty chips and sweet chocolates and candies, he made his way up to the cashier.
Charlie’s name tag was long faded and he looked like he had been working here for decades. He took his time scanning through Bucky’s items, though he raised an eyebrow at the bag of Skittles and Bucky nodded, a silent conversation between the two before Charlie slipped the candy into the bag.
True to his word, Bucky pushed aside the cash from your hand as you tried to pay and he handed Charlie his card. You grunted, doing that little dance most couples do on a first date when the bill comes, though you started to blush as soon as the thought made its way into your head.
This wasn’t a date. This was... well, you didn’t know what this was, but it was certainly anything but a date.
An acid trip, maybe? An elaborate dream? One of those cheesy Hallmark movies where an angel or a ghost from your past teaches you how to open up and love again?
Probably.
But definitely not a date. He didn’t even know your name.
By the time Bucky gathered the bags of snacks and you followed him out to the main walkway, stranded passengers had begun lining up at every fast-food join within sight, lines carrying far down into the hallway and grumbled groans as managers came out to inform the crowds they were running out of food.
“What did I tell you?” Bucky grinned, nudging your shoulder and you shook your head, trying to suppress your laughter. “Chaos starts once these tourists realize they’re trapped. Someone’s going to start trying to buy food off of people before they take their first bite. Just you wait.”
He was something from a dream, you were sure of it.
“Okay, fearless leader. What’s next?”
He chuckled at that and your stomach flipped a little, though you did your best to ignore it.
“Outlets and shelter,” he replied matter-of-factly, like he’d done this dozens of times before, as he studied the hallway to the left and right, determining which was the better way to go. He chewed on his lip, clearly caught in thought before he straightened his back and turned to you with a grin. “I’ve got a place in mind. You trust me?”
“I don’t know you and you still don’t know my name,” you responded teasingly, though somehow, you knew the answer was yes.
“Sometimes trust is something you learn over time and sometimes it’s a gut instinct,” he shrugged, offering you his hand. “What’s your gut telling you, doll?”
“That you might be an insane person... or an abirritation,” you laughed, though you grabbed onto his hand and let him lead you out into the hallway, “but clearly, I’m okay with that.”
“That’s all I need,” Bucky beamed, tugging on your hand to get you to walk faster until you were practically jogging.
Lugging your suitcase behind you as Bucky held a firm grip onto the bags of snacks in on hand and you in the other, he led you far away from the crowds of people, past the moving walkways and the food courts, past the gates with attendants behind the counter, until the lights were dimmer and you passed by nearly five gates that were completely empty.
He let go of your hand and gestured to the gate marked A29 with a familiar smile on his face, though it seemed a little sad with a crease forming in his brow and a slight tremble of his hand clenching by his side.
“How did you know this place would be deserted?” you asked in awe as you tossed your bag onto one of the dozens of open chairs, spinning yourself around freely like you were in the meadows on a warm summer day and not currently trapped in an airport with a monsoon outside and stuffy air-conditioning blowing through the vents.
“Had a hunch,” he replied, though when you rolled your eyes playfully at him, he chuckled, conceding, “I saw this terminal had most of its flights out before the storm broke. Figured it would be pretty untouched for the rest of the night.”
“You’ve been out here before,” you observed, catching the way he stared longingly over at a corner by the desk like he was watching an old memory play out in front of him. Though he wore his smile again, it was softer now, sadder. He seemed caught up in his imagination and you took a careful step forward, tapping on his shoulder and smiling enough for the both of you. “Come on. I’ve got first dibs on the Doritos.”
“So,” Bucky started, “you never said why you were going to Atlanta.”
“Neither did you, smart guy. Why would I give that information away to a complete stranger?” you teased, following Bucky as he led you to the series of outlets against the wall. You slid down the window, leaning against it as rain pummeled against the glass from the other side.
Bucky shrugged, smiling encouragingly as he sat down next to you and pulled his phone charger from his bag. “You don’t have to tell me anything, doll, but I noticed the way you smiled when the gate agent announced our flight was cancelled when everyone else was groaning and crying. You were smiling. Just curious, is all.”
You narrowed your eyes at that, watching him silently as he plugged his phone in and the face of a young girl illuminated on the screen. She was smiling, almost mid-laugh, and Bucky was off in the background of the image, racing towards her, perhaps a few years younger judging by the haircut. She looked a little like him.
You wondered then if she had anything to do with why he had lost some of his energy as he came up on this gate, falling into a memory he recognized. He was complex man; you’d give him that.
“I was... um... going to a wedding,” you confessed slowly and Bucky smirked, pleased to get something out of you.
“You sound unsure about that,” he pointed out, ripping open a bag of chips and plopping four into his mouth.
You shrugged, “yeah, well, even if I make it in time tomorrow, I still don’t know if I’ll go.”
“Why’s that? Seems like a long way to travel if you’re not gonna--”
“The groom is my ex.”
“Oh shit,” Bucky coughed on the chips that were about halfway down his throat. He leaned over, heaving into a napkin and you rubbed at his back instinctively, careful circles over the soft fabric of his t-shirt as his whole body shook with each cough. You pulled away with a blush as he smiled at you once the fit subsided. He sat back again the wall, brushing his wrist over his lips as he stole another look over at you. “You’re joking.”
“Afraid not,” you shrugged, pressing your lips into a thin line.
You were embarrassed to even say it aloud, to have to first explain to all of your friends why you agreed to go even as they begged you not to, to have to pack your bag and tell your mother why you won’t be home for Sunday dinner, to have to say it even to this man who was practically a stranger who’s approval and kindness you suddenly found yourself craving. Two years since the break-up and you still struggled to get past the man who broke your heart. Saying no to your ex, to Jack, wasn’t something you were used to and it came as old habit.
“This monsoon might have just saved you from a weekend in hell,” Bucky exhaled, turning to face you with a smile that lightened the anxiety in your chest. He offered you the bag of chips and you took them gratefully.
“You’re probably right,” you said, tossing a few chips into your mouth, though you knew the universe would find a way to get you to that wedding, whether or not you were ready for it.
“You on good terms with the guy, at least?” Bucky asked and you shook your head, clenching your jaw.
He frowned, though he didn’t press you any further as he must have noticed your cheeks flush, shame seeping in you. Bucky let out a tired exhale, leaning back against the window and slumping further to the floor.
He cared, that much you could tell. He was bothered by the fact that you were going to this wedding, alone, and that even with all that you didn’t even have a good post-breakup relationship with the guy. You wondered how it was possible for someone to learn to care so fast and what your night would have been like if he hadn’t been standing directly behind you in that line, if the monsoon never rolled in and this handsome, incredibly endearing stranger never stormed into your life.
Would you have gone to that wedding, watched the man you once thought was the love of your life devote himself to a woman after he broke your heart over his inability to commit? Would you have cried through the ceremony and drank yourself into obligation because he’d hurt you so bad you hadn’t been able to even date since he left you?
Would you have boarded that flight without a second thought to the stranger with the blue eyes and the infectious smile?
“What about you?” you asked carefully, taking another bite of the chips before handing it to him.
“What? You trying to do a something-personal-for-something-personal kind of thing?” Bucky laughed, though there was a nervous edge to his voice.
“Only if you want,” you offered, smiling gently at him and giving him the out if he wanted it. It hadn’t been very long since he avoided the question the first time when you had been sitting over coffee in the empty café.
He took in a heavy breath, though it was shaken. You narrowed your eyes, watching him carefully as he sat up, straightening his back and brushing his hair back from his eyes.
“Yeah, I’m, supposed to uh, I’m supposed to see...” he sighed, scratching at the back of his neck, his voice falling low suddenly. His lips pursed into a frown and the light faded from the blue of his eyes. Something was clearly bothering him and he couldn’t seem to even string the words together.
“I haven’t seen her since I... and my ma says that I’ve been...” he groaned, clenching his jaw and running his hand over his lips. He wasn’t making much sense, that much was clear to the both of you. His eyes fell to the floor and he was only a whisper of the man who stood laughing at the hoard of passengers at your gate.
He was layered, dimensional; both the man with confidence unlike you’d ever seen and the shy, nervous guy with a heart bigger than most men you knew.
Your stomach hurt just watching him struggle to answer your question.
“Y/n,” you blurted out, catching his attention and he raised an eyebrow. You let out a steady breath. “My name. It’s Y/n. Something personal for something personal, right?”
Bucky nodded, repeating your name back to you and a soft smile came over his lips. It sounded like velvet and honey and all kinds of wonderful coming from his voice. He relaxed a bit, the tension slipping from his shoulders. “It’s a nice name. Y/n. Suits you.”
But his voice was still low, aching, and it made your heart twist.
“Come on,” you urged, grabbing his hand and lugging him back up to his feet, determined to bring back the witty and charismatic man who threw you into this mess to begin with. You didn’t like seeing him upset.
“Thought you wanted to know--”
“Not now,” you replied casually and you could practically feel the weight lift off his shoulders as you dragged him over to the massive checkers set in the corner of the gateway set aside for restless travelers. “I’ve got a preposition for you.”
“Yeah? What’s that?”
“I get to ask you a question every time I knock one of your pieces off the board,” you proposed, positioning yourself on the side of the board with red chips as big as your shoes, “and if you get one of mine, you get to ask me a question.”
“Do I have to answer?” Bucky teased, folding his arms over his chest and you could already see him coming back into himself.
“Only if you don’t want to be a total loser,” you shrugged kicking your piece out to make the first move. Bucky laughed and squatted down at the board, taking his time to determine his trajectory before he made his move.
It only took three turns before you knocked out one of his pieces.
“Truthfully now,” you started, eyeing him as he crossed his arms over his chest, “in all of your layovers, how many people have you dragged around this airport doing cartwheels and raiding convenience stores?”
A laugh burst from Bucky’s chest and you swore you’d never heard a more beautiful sound in your life, his whole body caught up in the moment. It had been a while since you’d seen someone laugh like that without trying to suppress it. He was unlike anyone you’d ever met, though, you supposed you knew that already.
Then he paused, folding his arms, studying you. “You want to know how many women, don’t you?”
“That’s not what I said,” you retorted, trying to hide your blush, though it was obvious as day.
“Only one before you in all my years,” he responded with a nod, “but she was a frequent flyer with me. Not what you think and certainly not the same.”
“That didn’t make a lot of sense, Bucky,” you accused with a grin, “you’re being cryptic.”
“Maybe you should ask a more specific question next time,” he countered with a sink.
“You’re lucky you’re cute,” you grumbled as Bucky started to eye the board for his move.
“So, you think I’m cute?”
You froze, heat flushing into your cheeks as you realized what you said. Glaring up at Bucky as he watched you amusingly. You rolled your eyes.
“Like you don’t already know,” you huffed, trying to push aside the embarrassment you felt through a playful smile.
“Still, it’s nice to hear,” Bucky grinned, nudging his piece to jump over yours and he discarded the red coin off to the side. “How long were you with this ex?”
Your breath hitched in your lungs and you cleared your throat, taking your time to meet his eye again. “You don’t mess around, do you?”
“Nope,” he replied, popping the ‘p’ on the purse of his lips.
“Three years,” you said quickly, before you could lose your nerve. “He was my college boyfriend. Had plans to move in together and talked about getting married ourselves before he decided he’d rather ‘explore his options’ once graduation came around. Hadn’t heard from him since. Until I got the invite to his wedding. Guess he found a better option.”
“Yikes,” Bucky winced, “what an asshole. Why did you even agree to go to his wedding?”
“Sorry, you already used up your question. Better wait for your next turn.” You winked at him, holding your pointer finger up as you maneuvered your way around the board to find your next move. It was a relief to cut him off. Your relationship with Jack wasn’t an easy one to talk about and you didn’t want him to think of you the way Jack often saw you; small and spineless. So, you pushed out a smile and pretended you were fine.
Bucky shook his head, armed folded over his chest enough to see the prominent outline of the muscles in his biceps, and he laughed at your response. It was a sweet kind of sound that made your chest fell warm, even with the anxiety in your stomach at the very thought of your ex. It was genuine for as often as he did it and it seemed to live permanently etched into his cheeks.
You went back and forth for a few turns, each picking off the other’s pieces on every round. He asked you about your family, about your favorite flavor of ice cream, about your movie preferences and your day job. You asked him about the scars lining his left arm, peeking out as he scratched at his wrist and he told you it was from an accident on the job, though he didn’t elaborate further. You asked about the college shirt he was wearing any why he dared to go to school in Georgia if he was really a New Yorker like he claimed, though he laughed it off and said it wasn’t his alma mater. You asked about his typical coffee order and hair routine and how he got it so fluffy and he laughed so hard, tears welled in his eyes.
It was almost a half hour of the simpler questions before Bucky knocked out another one of your pieces with satisfied hum and took a moment to think of his question. He watched you for a moment, studying you almost, and your stomach lurched a little. Not because he made you uncomfortable, but because you could see the carefulness behind his eyes, the soft smile on his face, and a man like that looking at you like you were something special was an unfamiliar feeling to say the least.
“You don’t really think this woman he’s marrying is ‘the better option,’ do you?”
You bit down so hard on your lip you drew blood. The sincerity of his question threw you and your heart must have skipped about a dozen beats before you could even blink. Bucky must have noticed your sudden distress and he clenched his jaw. A red heat formed in his cheeks you never would have expected.
“Maybe I should say I’m not trying to pry, but I clearly am,” he admitted with a tired laugh. “I’ve only known you for a few hours, Y/n, and I don’t know how anyone could think you’re anything but the best option. And if this guy was with you for years, it shouldn’t even be a question.”
“That’s... that’s really kind, Bucky, but you don’t know me,” you mumbled, unable to meet his eye and losing every ounce of confidence you had clung to around him. Jack had a way of doing that to you, even when he wasn’t around.
But Bucky was determined. He shook his head, crossing the board and grabbing a tender hold of your arms, urging you to look at him. His hands were warm against you, large, a little calloused and rough on the edges but so incredibly gentle.
“I know that you treated that poor gate agent with empathy and patience and got him to laugh after the hell storm of passengers who had just spent their time yellin’ at the guy. I know that you agreed to follow a borderline intrusive stranger through an airport at midnight at the promise of caffeine,” he said, smiling sweetly. “I know that you apologize to teenage employees for staying a few minutes past close without realizing it. I know that you can do a near perfect cartwheel and how you take your coffee.”
“Bucky, I--”
“I know that you’re funny and adventurous and kind. I know that you’re incredibly perceptive and you changed the subject when you caught onto how hard it was for me to tell you why I’m going to Atlanta,” Bucky said casually, sternly almost just to make you believe him, as if his words didn’t make your heart swell so much in your chest it hurt. “Your ex is an asshole, is all I’m saying. He never should have said something like that to you. You’re someone’s best option, you hear me? Don’t settle for some jerk who tells you you’re anything less.”
You swallowed nervously, getting caught in deep oceans of blue and grey as Bucky held onto you. There wasn’t a trace of anything but sincerity in his eyes and you wondered how it was possible he even existed. He rubbed gently at your arms, like he was trying to draw warmth, and the smile on his lips was enough to float butteries in your stomach.
“Thanks, Bucky,” you said softly, sincerely, and he nodded at you encouragingly.
He stepped back to his side of the board and you missed him standing so close to you, missing his hands on you, and you clenched your jaw, trying to push the feelings away.
“Since you didn’t technically answer my question, I’m asking another one,” he said lightly, grinning wildly and it brought back the smile to your face. “You’re from New York, aren’t you?”
“Yeah. Queens. Live there now, too,” you replied, wondering how on earth he was able to deduce that and watching the way he smiled to himself, nodding. “Why?”
“Not your turn to ask questions, Y/n,” Bucky teased, though he seemed pleased with your answer. “Make your move, Queens.”
You laughed, already feeling light again and amazed by how easy it was for him to bring that back out in you. You nudged a piece with your foot and swerved it around of two of his. You kicked two black pieces off the board.
“That’s two questions,” you pointed out and he shrugged, challenging you.
Crossing your arms over your chest, you studied him for a moment. There were a million different questions you could ask. You thought about asking whether he’d been born and raised in the city like you, if he’d ever traveled abroad, what the military tag on his suitcase was for and if he ever served. You wondered if he was single, if this was a one night thing where you’d go your separate ways and never see one another again, if he was really as kind and as charming as he seemed because you still couldn’t believe he was real.
You were about to ask him something trivial because you were too afraid to get an answer that would break your heart when he cleared his throat.
“Or,” he started, nervously, “you could ask one big question?”
You narrowed your eyes, confused, and waiting for him to continue.
He sighed. “You could ask about my sister. If you want?”
You paused, watching the way he swayed in his stance, arms fold tightly across his chest like he was trying to hold himself together. She must be the girl in the picture on his phone, the reason why he started acting strange, upset, when he tried to tell you why he was going to Atlanta.
He nodded at you and you could tell he was ready, that he wanted to talk about it now, and you gestured to the wall adjacent to the game. He followed you silently, sliding down the wall to take a seat on the floor next to you. He folded his legs under him while you tucked your knees up to your chest, waiting patiently. You didn’t know the question to ask, but he let out a heavy sigh and started for you.
“Her name’s Rebecca. Bec. We used to travel alone a lot when we were kids to go see our dad,” Bucky said softly, scratching the back of his neck. “We had layovers here a lot and if the flight got cancelled, we’d just get stuck overnight. I mean, I was old enough to watch out for her okay so it wasn’t a big deal, but she used to get scared. So, I started making it a game. It happened more times than you would think and it managed to make her feel better, got her laughing. We used to spend all our money at that convenience shop on chips and candy and race in these halls and do cartwheels and blast music and play games over by that gate.”
You smiled as Bucky talked. He stared off across the gate to where your bags were, over where the memory he had been reliving earlier was, and avoided your eyes, but you knew this wasn’t the hard part of the story. You let him keep going without interruption.
“We got to know some of the people who worked here over the years, like Charlie,” he continued, though his voice dropped a little as he tried to clear his throat. He took in a heavy breath but he struggled to find his words again.
“That sounds really nice, Bucky,” you said encouragingly and he nodded.
“Yeah, she uh, she used to love it, but we don’t-- she doesn’t talk to me anymore,” he confessed, clenching at his jaw painfully and winging his hands in his lap.
You watched as he yanked and pulled on his fingers, a nervous habit you used to see in your father after he’d been in a near fatal car accident, a symptom of anxiety. Without giving yourself a second to back out, you reached into his lap and placed your hands over his until they stilled.
He froze, staring down at your hands and allowed you to pull his left from his right and carefully grasp it in your own hand, holding it tight and offering him a gentle smile. He exhaled, relieved, and squeezed your hand before he continued.
“I enlisted right out of high school,” Bucky said, pulling your hand to rest on his thigh as he ran his free hand over the back of your palm. “Bec was so pissed at me. Especially when they sent me overseas. But she still wrote, still answered my calls. Until I got hit by an IED and got my whole arm shredded.”
He pulled up part of his sleeve to reveal marred skin under the t-shirt he wore. It was faded, healed over the years, but still ridged, still mutilated by the blast. He sighed, pushing it back down like looking at it was even difficult for him. You squeezed his hand.
“I was home for a bit, just trying to heal,” he continued, “but once I was cleared by the doc’s, I wanted to go back. That was the last straw for my sister. She—she just couldn’t understand why I’d go back after that. She said she’d never speak to me again if I did and I tried to tell her that I had a duty, that I had friends who died in that blast and being over here was hell for me. It was back then. But she didn’t understand. She still doesn’t and she held true to her word. She hasn’t spoken to me since I went back, not since I came home either. I’m out now and I still can’t get her to return my calls. She just cut me off completely.”
“Oh, Bucky,” you sighed, heart breaking as he bit on his lip, clearly trying to suppress a lump in his throat.
“I’m supposed to be going to her college graduation,” he said tensely, sniffling a bit. “She doesn’t know, but Mom’s been on me to fix things for years. I just... I don’t know how and I’m fucking terrified that she’s going to take one look at me and tell me to leave or turn her back to me or, I don’t know, ignore me completely. She’s my little sister and I miss her but I don’t know how to make her understand. I’m not sorry for going back. It’s what I needed to do but, I hate that I lost her because of it.”
It was silent for a moment and you watched as the clock opposite you turned on three in the morning. Bucky’s breaths were uneven beside you as he tried to pull himself together. Each passing moment you spent with him, you only wanted to learn more, wanted to ease him through his pain, to make him smile and laugh.
But there was a truth he needed to hear.
“I’m not sure she’ll ever understand, Bucky,” you said slowly and Bucky clenched his jaw. It was clearly something he’d been thinking about, though he didn’t want to admit it. You sighed, rubbing at his hand in slow circles. “I don’t think anyone but someone who has lived through what you have could understand wanting to go back. She clearly loves you and she was probably terrified for you. Sometimes, when someone you love puts themselves back into the heart of danger like that, it's easier to shut down than deal with the possibility of losing them.”
Bucky nodded, taking in your words. You gave him the time he needed, letting him sit with the silence and the thoughts in his head until he was ready. You watched the gears turning, watched as he squeezed your hand in even intervals, and let out a steady breath.
“Sorry I’m such a bummer,” he said after a while, a tired laugh in his voice and he shook his head as you started to object. “I hate that I was relieved when our flight got canceled but I know I’ll have to find a way there regardless. I thought I’d spend tonight in this airport just sitting in my anxiety and thinking about all the ways I’ll disappoint her again, but then you spilled your coffee all over that pretentious asshole and you... you caught me by surprise, Y/n.”
He turned to you, his free hand snaking up to slide along your cheek, cupping the side of your face as his fingers danced in your hair. The way he was looking at you, with startling shades of blue and a sincerity you hadn’t known in a man in years, your stomach twisted and turned on itself in the best possible way. His eyes flickered down to your lips.
“It’s your turn,” you whispered, eyes drifting over to the game.
“Will you let me see you again?” he asked quietly without skipping a beat, not even bothering with the pieces on the board and you didn't mind, not as he was leaning closer to you, his breath against your skin.
His lips touched yours and it was sweet and short so impossibly brief because suddenly the overhead speakers let out a sharp, high-pitched chime as the transmitter turned on. You jumped at the shock of it and Bucky pulled away, the spell broken and the ghost of his lips aching on your own.
“Attention passengers flying from Charlotte to Atlanta on flight 937,” the voice called in muffled tone, “Please see an agent at Gate B9. Your flight is now scheduled to depart at 3:50am.”
You sunk against the wall and Bucky fiddled nervously with his hands.
“That’s your flight, isn’t it?” he asked, disappointed and you nodded. He sighed, hulling himself back up to his feet and offering you his hand. “We better get you over there in time, then.”
You looked up at him for a moment and contemplated just skipping the flight to spend a few more hours with him. Was it insane? Naïve? Maybe. But he was unlike anyone else you’d ever met and you didn’t think you could stand this being the last time you saw him.
“Come on,” he smiled sweetly, though it didn’t reach his eyes, “I’ll walk you to your gate and everything, be a proper gentleman since you’d been so gracious tonight before I send you off--”
“Attention passengers flying from Charlotte to Atlanta on flight 1176,” the voice spoke again and Bucky froze, “please see an agent at Gate C2. Your new flight is now scheduled to depart at 3:30am.”
“Shit,” he cursed, glancing down at his watch to find it was already nearing 3:20. He clenched his jaw, looking down at you apologetically. “I... I have to go.”
You took his hand and he helped you back up to your feet, though he didn’t let go right away. He stared at you for a moment, longingly, like leaving right now was the last thing he wanted to do. It was the last thing you wanted, too.
You walked with him, hand in hand, to the side of the gateway with your bags. He stuffed the snacks into the plastic bag and handed them to you, though you tried to resist, but he shoved them into your backpack with a smile anyway.
“Take the skittles, at least,” you tried to persuade him, “you picked those out.”
“I can’t stand ‘em, actually,” he chuckled sadly, shaking his head. “I always got them for Bec. Guess I was a little stuck in routine.”
“So, take them with you,” you encouraged, kneeling down next to him and pulling the red bag from your luggage and placing it in his hands. He stared down at it for a moment, tensely. He didn’t meet your eye but you carefully rubbed at his shoulder until the tension drained. “Bring them for her. Call it a peace offering.”
Bucky smiled sadly, but he nodded, the appreciation clear in his eyes as he rose back to his feet and offered you his hand, which you took effortlessly.
“How did I manage to find you?” he asked so quietly so you almost didn’t hear it. He was watching you with a kind of bewilderment in his eye and your cheeks began to flush, until you noticed the clock affixed to the wall over his shoulder. Your heart sank.
“You should get going, Bucky. You’ll miss it,” you said, trying to mask the sadness in your voice though it did little use.
“Yeah,” he replied. He didn’t move.
The two of you stood there for a few moments, just staring at one another, wishing the night didn’t have to end. But you had a wedding to attend. And he had a graduation.
“Bucky,” you urged again, squeezing his hand.
He nodded, detangling your fingers with a new kind of determination. He reached into his bag and dug around for a pen and paper. Scribbling messy handwriting on the notepad, he ripped off a page and handed it to you.
“Take this, please,” he said, and you grasped the crumpled paper in your hand. A series of numbers listed on one side in thick black ink. “You don’t have to do anything with it if you don’t want, but I hope you do. I hope you call.”
You nodded, running your thumb along the dried ink before you met his eye again; blue unlike even the clearest morning sky.
“I have to run,” Bucky said sadly as he started to back away. “Thanks for putting up with me for a while.”
“Thanks for asking me to,” you called back, watching as he walked backwards as long as he could until he checked his watch again and grimaced at the time.
He wanted to say more, that much you could tell, but there wasn’t time. He gave you one last wave and turned on his heels, sprinting down the terminal and taking a sharp left. You watched until he disappeared from view and you were alone in the gateway, surrounded by his memories and a new one of your own.
The crumpled paper stayed firm in your grasp the entire walk to your newly assigned gate, your mind caught on Bucky with every step. Even as you boarded, as you sat in your seat and closed the window shade, leaning against the wall in an attempt to find rest, the paper never left the grip of your hand.
A crumpled paper with a number of a stranger. A friend. Maybe something more if you let yourself believe it.
It was exciting and terrifying and magical at once.
You slipped the paper into your pocket as the plane left the runway and lifted into the air, whirring sounds of the engines and cabin pressure lulling you to sleep.
You thought only of Bucky; of blue eyes and nervous laughs, of cartwheels and potato chips, of painful questions and reassurance unlike you’d had in years, of rosy cheeks and soft pink lips.
You weren’t sure you’d ever think of anyone else again.
