"I thought you'd be a sadder at Uther's passing." Merlin placed a full bowl of parsnip stew in front of Gaius. "You've been friends for years."

Gaius sighed, wrapping his hands around the clay bowl. "I haven't considered Uther a friend for many many years."

"Really? I wouldn't have known." Merlin sat across from his uncle but held off on eating. Gaius hadn't picked up a spoon either, staring at the floating roots.

"You should have learned by now, Merlin, the court is full of secrets. How often have you smiled at Arthur to hide something?"

Merlin ducked his head. More often than he'd like. He wanted to be honest with Arthur, and maybe that day would be here soon, but magic was still outlawed. Anything that hinted Merlin had it had to be hidden.

He wasn't the only one in Camelot with such a secret - Gaius kept the same fact hidden. Even more tightly, perhaps, as he was known as a sorcerer in the past and often was the face pointed to first when something supernatural occurred. Even his friendship, or perceived friendship with the king hadn't saved him from punishment the past few years.

"You could have been honest with me," Merlin offered. "I tell you everything."

"Sometimes more than I want to hear," Gaius said with a smile. He picked up his spoon, but paused before dipping it into the stew.

"I think I am sad, Merlin. Not at Uther's passing so much, but I always hoped that we'd make amends. That he'd forgive me. Stand up for me when I was accused. I grieved our friendship years ago, but I always thought we could go back to how we were before Arthur's birth. Now, we never will."

"I'm sorry."

"Not your fault, my boy. I hope your relationship with Arthur lasts longer than mine with his father."

🐌 What is one of your smallest writing goals?

Okay it doesn't sound like a small goal, but to me it is because it's so vague, but I have a goal this year of 'hit 500k words posted on ao3'. I'm 68k away and am in a bang that will be at least 30k by itself (and said bang is due at the end of January) so...doesn't feel like that much of a massive goal or anything.

Also because just the idea of 'writing words' is so vague and unspecific, it's perfect because I can work on literally whatever I want (as long as I finish it so that it's good to post!).

For me it's way more intense to set a specific goal of focusing on one piece or one fandom or whatever (as much as I want to do that too!) so this goal is just so achievable it's small to me lol.

🌈 What research do you plan on doing for your writing?

I do in general try to avoid research honestly because it's such a slow-down load-bearing thing for me. I like to look for inspiration or like, touch up on canon events for things where I need to remember a bit more clearly to write, but like, research, while being something I know how to do, is something I do not like.

When I'm writing I do run into the things that I need to lookup sometimes of course, like anyone. Something I do all the time is use archaic definitions of words and so the sentence reads weird to people who aren't me so part of writing/editing for me is checking for that by looking up those words and then reformatting my writing to be more generally understandable.

And that's.... kind of research? Barely?

👾 Do you have any "bad" writing habits you want to break?

This one and the next question are sort of related. And this is a common 'habit' of writers and sort of necessary to the process so I'm not really sure if it's 'breakable' at all. But, like everyone, I do a lot of stopping and starting. I'd like to finish more projects, but so many things get large or out of scope, or motivation just gets harder for them.

I'm addressing this a bit this year through my list of SMTIV ideas I want to write for. There are MANY that are designed to be short so even if they become 'out of scope' that 'out of scope' is maybe 20k instead of 100k+. I'm excited to push through them and get these ideas written and posted, so that's going to be a big focus once I'm done with this bang!

🎉 How are you going to be kind to yourself if you don't meet your goals?

So, for me, it's just important to like... forgive yourself and move on! Writing-wise that just means letting yourself move around and pick up and set down projects as you can! You can force some things (I am VERY DETERMINED to push through this bang I'm in) but you can only force things that are like, already achievable in your head. If a goal is too high in the sky you don't have to officially 'give up' on it, but you can't be focusing on something you just don't have energy to do.

So... I am kind to myself by letting myself put things down. If I don't, then I'd get halted in my process. It's important to just, chase your fun, have a good time, chat with friends, etc!

Recientemente he terminado la temporada de Superman & Lois ¿La habéis visto? 🧐 Reconozco que era una serie que no esperaba mucho de ella y me ha terminado sorprendiendo.
