January 1930 Postcard 4 Amarillo, Texas Antoine still thinks I am quite silly to write these out at each stop, being that no one other than myself will ever read them. But I tell him that one day he or I will find this collection and it will be like a window into the past. As I’ve had no camera through the journey, perhaps these will be all I have to remember Texas by. For tomorrow we leave this seemingly endless state to enter the land of our destination: New Mexico. There’s a great murmur throughout the train, both from travelers and tourists, for what they call the Land of Enchantment. Quite surreal, doesn’t it seem, that our new home will have such a reputation? We shall see if it lives up to this illustrious moniker in exactly one week, when we arrive at our destination. The town name seems perfectly at odds with the one given to the state: Strangerville, nestled amongst the hills of the Land of Enchantment. Indeed, I could perhaps imagine no life stranger than the one that has sent me hurtling through the dry landscape of Texas to an unknown land. When you next see the light of day, dearest postcard, it shall be when you are tucked into a book on the shelves of our new home. There perhaps I will find you again one day, when I am old and grey, and it will be like reuniting with an old friend. Until then, Zelda Darlington, soon to be Duplanchier
