Because of the great decisions over at @staff or their higher ups (/s) the Lightbox view has turned into the norm so I am officially only using the web now. Even on my phone.
This is not out of protest but out of necessity as despite sending support around three tickets complaining, explaining and begging to have an option to turn it off they not only don't wanna do that but also they're making it the standard image viewer.
It genuinely makes my experience on Tumblr way worse, much less fun and much more stressful, to a point where using the browser version of Tumblr is preferable.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
pornstar!eddie x director!reader
we’re gonna call this a belated holiday blurb 🎄
cw: no smut, but there’s allusions to mutual masturbation and an over abundance of filthy flirting b/c these two simply can’t help themselves. the concept for eddie’s shoot is inspired by this (nsfw) incredible freaking art by @safk-art.
18+, MDNI┃2.2k
Tumblr media
You’ve never been a fan of these calendar shoots.
It takes practically the entire day and the studio is packed full because they bring in just about every performer under contract to participate.
It’s loud and chaotic, lots of PAs running back and forth with the most random assortment of props you’ve ever seen. And it’s stifling hot with all the bustling bodies, equipment and lightboxes, flash bulbs going off every five seconds.
Right now there’s a few girls in Victoria’s Secret-esque getups with feathery angel wings being cupids for February, while two more covered in glittery body paint are getting ready to pose in a cauldron to be a “pot of gold” for March. After them, it’ll be girls in big yellow rain boots with matching caps and nothing else spraying one another with a hose for April.
The remaining months are still in the process of being set up, backdrops being changed out and lighting adjusted. On the furthest wall, there’s a big board with everyone’s assignments and the various call times as well as mock-ups of each concept and who will participate in the photo.
You’ve already visited the board and deduced your first stop will be the wardrobe department so you can get your costume. You’ve also noted that a certain someone will likely be finishing up his turn at the make-up mirror right around the same time you’re done being fitted.
When you emerge from behind the curtained off area set up for people to change, yours eyes meet Eddie’s across all the chaos and he’s immediately getting up from his chair, striding towards you.
Your body can’t help but react to his presence, despite your best efforts to keep your face neutral and squash the urge to run directly into his arms.
You might’ve thought it had been days or weeks since you saw him, rather than mere hours. You might’ve thought you woke up that morning on opposite coasts rather than with your naked limbs entwined and tangled up in your bedsheets. You might’ve thought he was some kind of long lost lover whose face was fading from memory the way your heart leapt just from seeing him.
Still, you know you can’t greet him the way you want to. Not with all these people around.
Word has yet to get around about you two, and you intend to keep it that way. The current theory is that what happened at the awards was just a fluke—a random, drunken, one-night thing.
(A one-night thing that’s led to the best weeks of your life, but that’s neither here nor there.)
You’re meant to be playing it cool, keeping things professional, still holding all your cards decidedly close to your vests, at least for the time being.
But Eddie's not exactly making it easy.
He lets his dressing gown slip open slightly as he walks over, showing off a little more of the top of his chest and his thick, muscular neck where it meets his pronounced collarbones.
Slut, you think with the utmost affection.
The boy certainly makes for a cute Rudolph.
He’s snagged the coveted December slot, and the creative director has chosen a bondage theme—hence the body harness they’ve got him in under his thin robe, as well as a collar with jingling gold bells and a pair of antlers on top of his mop of unruly curls. For the picture, he’s also going to be tied up with Christmas lights, struggling against the illuminated ties while you and the rest of the ‘reindeer’ stand around him laughing and teasing him mercilessly for his bright red ‘nose.’
You imagine that’s what he was in the chair for, getting the head of his dick painted with deep scarlet rouge so it’ll look like it’s shining.
It’s all seems like a bit much, but even you have to admit you’re excited to see the end result.
He scans up and down with those mischievous eyes, all the while having to resist the urge to slip his hands around your waist and pull you into him, showing you just how redundant you’ve made the Viagra he popped earlier. He should have known he wouldn’t even need it once you were on set.
He snaps his fingers and points, a sly grin tugging at his lips. “Let me guess…Vixen?”
The bells on the collar around your neck jingle as you smile and shake your head.
“More like Dancer,” you replied lowly, dropping to a breathy whisper when he got close enough to hear. “Or did you forget last night already?”
“Not forgetting that anytime soon,” he promised in a husky whisper of his own.
You shiver at his words as they trickle down your back, and you can almost feel his hands on you exactly as they were the night before—fingers splayed wide to hold onto as much of you as possible when he reached out for your ass.
The dance had started out innocently enough, as a brainstorming session for your next project, only for it to devolve as it often did these days into you attacking one another once one or both of you could no longer restrain yourselves. The pretense of you as a stripper giving your security guard a lap dance as thanks for chasing away a handsy creep fell away, along with your clothes.
This newfound aspect of your relationship was certainly inspiring a lot of ideas, but it had proved to be more of a hindrance to your work ethic than anything else. Still, you couldn’t be too broken up about it. Not when you’re having the best sex of your personal and professional life combined.
“Not forgetting this anytime soon, either,” Eddie adds, still staring raptly at your costume.
You and the other girls are dressed pretty simply in matching brown teddies and antlers of your own, plus collars similar to Eddie’s. They’re also going to paint your faces to look more like deer, with cute little noses and tiny white freckles and extra-long lashes. And yeah, it’s a little silly. But the way a certain pair of bright brown eyes are pouring over you right now…it’s well worth it.
“Hey…think you get to keep this?” he asks quietly, carefully fingering the marabou trim.
“Unlikely,” you frown and then eye him coyly. “But Tina might let me borrow it…assuming it’ll be returned to her in pristine condition.”
Eddie hisses softly through his teeth and his head quickly shakes back and forth.
“Yeeeeah, I can’t guarantee that,” he chuckles.
You deliver a light swat to his chest. Not too flirty, but not strictly platonic either. Though, it’s times like these that make you wonder why you bother.
Anyone looking on could probably see straight through your paltry attempt to act disinterested, and you’ve already started getting third degrees from some of your friends in the industry who have seen the massage tape.
Almost as soon as it was came out, you were being bombarded. People were quick to praise the chemistry between you and your co-star, but they were even quicker to drop their voices to a hushed and conspiring whisper as they asked what was ‘going on’ between you two.
And when you tried to say it was nothing or that you were just friends…it didn’t exactly go over.
You’re joking, right? Nah, no one is that good an actor, babe. The man is fully obsessed with you. Just look at his face when he—
So, yeah, okay, word was likely going to get out. But it wasn’t going to be today.
Right now, you just had to focus on taking this photo and getting through the rest of the day so you could spend the rest of your night with the adorable creature standing before you.
“I’m headed for make-up,” you offer. And in a lightning-quick move, you reach out to squeeze his arm, then swipe at it gently like you were just brushing off a piece of lint for him.
Very discreet. So covert.
Eddie tucks his chin to his chest as he nods, his eyes still roving over you and your skin he can see through the sheer material. You move to walk past him, letting your hip graze decidedly against his.
“Smile pretty,” you whisper under your breath.
Tumblr media
It’s not too much longer before they’re calling people over for your shot and instructing Eddie to get in position first. He drops his gown and sinks to his knees in the center of the frame, hard and freshly pumped cock bobbing between his thighs. The fake polyester snow on the floor provides at least a little cushioning, and the red on his head looks extra bright against the sparkly white.
The effect is…extremely distracting.
Even knowing it’s just make-up, as is the fake cum dribbling from his tip, your mind swirls with recent memories of his cock looking just like this in real life—his own fist wrapped tight around it, sliding up and down in long, even strokes; your dresser rattling as he leans on it for support while you lay with your legs splayed wide in your bed, rubbing slow, deliberate circles on your clit.
His eyes meet yours briefly and from the way they flash, you’re certain he’s remembering it too.
Once the photographer is happy with Eddie’s placement, the PAs come to tie his hands behind his back. They wind the strands of lights around his arms and torso up to his shoulders, draping them across his chest and then crossing them behind his back. Two of the girls are given the ends to hold so he looks like he’s hog-tied.
The light bounces prettily off his pale skin that glows a rosy pink, and you make a mental note to shoot him in similar lighting. Soon.
Maybe you’ll do something like this, but with just the Christmas lights. Him in your bed, his delicate wrists tied to your headboard, those soft rainbow lights the only color in the darkened room aside from that of a deep, cool blue winter night…
Okay, seriously. You’ve got to stop.
You’re at work, don’t forget.
Luckily, they’re placing the rest of you now and you’re brought into the foreground to stand next to Eddie. The two of you exchange another look as they fine tune the lighting, and you shoot him the subtlest wink you can manage. It’s short, so quick he nearly misses it, but it’s all he needs to be absolutely certain his dick will stay hard for the remainder of the shoot. Maybe the whole day.
He’s only vaguely aware of the girls standing behind him, or all the people crowded in behind the camera. Once they start shooting, his vision tunnels until all that’s left in focus is you.
The only thing he knows is it’s probably a good thing his hands are tied. Because the way you’re looking, he could not be held responsible for where his hands would wander if they were free.
Eddie gives himself over to the character he’s meant to be playing, and it’s really not all that hard acting pathetic and desperate for you. The lights he’s all tangled up in tighten as the girls holding either end pull them taut, and the room fills with their giggling as they laugh at him.
But honestly, Eddie doesn’t have any idea what the rest of the reindeer are doing. All he can focus any of his attention on is you in that damn teddy, pinching his chin between your thumb and index finger to make him look at you, smirking like he’s a piece of dirt you wouldn’t let lick your kneecap, let alone anything more erogenous, no matter how hard he begged you for it.
Yet somehow, he’s only more eager to try.
He knows they have the shot they want almost immediately, but they go through a few more poses just to have options. In one, they have you stand with one of your heels planted on Eddie’s chest and if you stay like that much longer, the fake cum on his tip is gonna have company.
Finally, they’re satisfied and there’s a great deal of droning chatter that sort of fades into static as they start to move on to the next shoot.
The rest of the girls wander off, but you kneel and start to unwrap the strands of Christmas lights for him. And they weren’t that tight, but you still massage his wrists once they’re freed and lean in close to his ear so you can whisper how well he did. His cock kicks up all over again at your gentle doting and he wonders if you’ll keep this up tonight at hom—your place.
Once he’s freed, you start to wind up the lights in your hand and glance around for the PAs who are nowhere to be found. You then push the coil into Eddie’s hands and give him a level look.
“See if you can sneak those out,” you instruct him with a smirk. “I’ve got plans for them later.”

𝐁𝐔𝐒𝐘, 𝐁𝐔𝐒𝐘..!! 🥯 𝐊. 𝐍𝐀𝐍𝐀𝐌𝐈
Tumblr media
𝐖𝐀𝐑𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐒;
almost voyeurism, fingering,
afab! nanami, gender neutral reader,
top reader.
Tumblr media
𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐒𝐈𝐆𝐇. it the third one in the span of five minutes, and nanami was never one to complain. all of the lights of your shared home had been turned down low in preparation for sleep, of which, nanami would not be participating in if this night was to follow the events of the last three.
"nanami?", you called, walking into the study. instantly, you hissed in irritation. it was clear that nanami had resorted to working in what looked like the inside of a lightbox in an attempt to keep himself awake. the numerous fluorescent lamps had been turned to their brightest setting, and your eyes stung already.
you watched as nanami's head swayed. a slow and torpid movement that wouldn't normally belong to him.
"nanami." you wrapped your arms around his shoulders. he looked at you, and your heart ached. his eyes were bloodshot and his skin was dull with exhaustion. his normally chiseled features now looked gaunt and sickly, emphasized by dark circles under brown eyes. you brushed your hand against his cheek. "come to bed?", you whispered.
he smiled and shook his head. "i have a meeting later tonight." the bright bluish-white light reflected on his face only deepened his tired lines. you grit your teeth.
after brutally hacking away at murderous curses at jujutsu tech— which was painfully understaffed, nanami would come home to you just to sit at his computer like a zombie: overworked and miserable. a nauseous rage welled up in your throat. "who even schedules a work meeting this late at night?", you couldn't help the venom that seeped into your voice.
"some... policy. discussing deadlines, making sure everyone is up to date.", nanami murmured. you rubbed deep circles into his shoulders. he rolled his head back with a groan, allowing you more space. your thumbs caught on a particularly hard knot slightly under his shirt collar.
you pulled back for a moment, and nanami's back slumped immediately. you rushed to shove several stack of papers and empty coffee mugs to the other side of his desk, and motion for him to sit. he did, albeit sluggishly, and you continued to knead into his skin. soft, trembling sighs left his lips. 'he hadn't even taken off his work shirt yet', you noted, and pulled his top over his head. you rubbed along the his sides. you missed this, missed his—
a blaring video call notification interrupted your thoughts. nanami sighed and reached for the mouse. you stopped him with a chaste kiss to his cheek.
"it's fine. i'll handle it.", you hummed. you were quick to turn off the camera function as nanami's name popped into view as joining the meeting. you pressed another kiss to his muscled arms, then another, then another, while a monotone voice from the laptop droned on.
" [ name ] , i have to..." nanami's voice died in his throat as you pressed your fingers into his hips, digging marks into the muscle underneath. he lurched forward with a start, a choked gasp escaping him. you hushed him and gestured to the laptop beside.
nanami shook his head desperately. he knew you well enough to understand where this was going and he didn't like it one bit. " [ na— ", nanami's resolve shattered as you captured his lips in a fervent embrace. "not now—" his pleas melted into deep whines. he wasn't sure if it was the lack of oxygen or the swelling exhaustion in his brain, but he swore his body was much more reactive than it would normally be.
your hand dipped into his briefs while the other fiddled with his front pant buttons. that familiar slick sensation met your fingertips, and as if on instinct, nanami's legs snapped shut. "e-enough...", he barely managed. he looked to you under lashes wet with frustration, and in that moment, you were sure you wanted to take all of his troubles away.
you shoved his thighs apart with a hiss and stole fistfuls of everything. nanami's breathing weighed heavy with need. you pinched and groped, manhandling in such a way that made the implications impossible to miss. his hips jerked, chasing the idea like a man depraved. you ran your fingers along the fatty folds of his cunt while you lapped at his throat, enjoying the feeling of his adam's apple pressing against the flat of your tongue while he panted for air.
nanami hooked his legs around your back to bring you close. your tongue left freezing stripes of saliva over his upper chest, along his jaw, and into the shell of his ear. a shiver ran down his spine, because that sloppy "shlk, shlk, shlk" invading his senses felt just as lewd as you plain bending him over and fucking him. it felt like you were stirring his dammed brain.
you rubbed his slit with feather-light grazes. with every trace, nanami's hips would follow in a phantom twitch.
you were a tease, and a terribly cruel one at that. nanami blinked tiredly. heat pooled in his stomach and left him with a dull ache. his expression was one of silent exasperation as you pulled away for the nth time. nanami clawed angry trails of red into your back. it was fair punishment though, he thought, for treating him like this.
finally, nanami felt that delicious breach in his core. his inner walls spasmed around your fingers, as if they held a magic touch of vitality. his chest trembled with shuddering breaths. you worked him open with strong scissoring motions, pulling what was left of his rationale apart into paper-thin threads. nanami's mouth fell open. "oh god...", he gasped.
your fingertips pressed rightly into his hole, rubbing raw the nerves that lit his body on fire. he could feel his heartbeat in his stomach. it was loud and desperate, unlike he'd ever felt it before. swears and clipped moans tumbled out of his lips. nanami's hips humped against your palm, forcing a faster tempo. his head slumped over your shoulder and his disheveled blonde hair tickled your face. his voice was high and more frantic now, orgasm approaching like a speeding freight train.
your thumb swiped viciously at his clit and stars burst behind his eyes. nanami's cunt clenched around your fingers. he keened. a bolt of pleasure ran through his spine like an electric current. nanami's open-mouthed groans sent ticklish vibrations into your chest, and you recalled how much you did enjoy hearing his voice.
his body seized for a moment, as if doused in freezing water, and you were suddenly hyper aware of the cool AC breeze on you forearm. a rushing stream of translucent fluid ran down your forearm while nanami twitched above you.
your ministrations slowed, guiding him back to reality.
you ran your hands along his back. "are you alright?"
"mmh..", he responded with a sleepy nod.
you discarded the— now soaked— suit pants that were hooked around his ankles.
"come to bed.", you repeated. it wasn't a question now, and either way, nanami was in no position to refuse. you pulled him up from the undersides of his thighs with a loud, 'squelch'.
you could see his reddening ears from the corner of your eye.
"sorry, i'll—"
you promptly interrupted him. "no more talking. just get some rest, okay?" he nestled his chin into the crook of your neck.
his body was warm.
"i'm disappointed to see your lack of participation today, kento. i hope this doesn't become a habit."
you glared at the banal voice coming from the laptop speaker. you had forgotten it was still there. it seemed that everyone else except the meeting host had been automatically muted. while you didn't care, you were sure it would save nanami a lot of embarrassment.
"i want to hear more of you in future meetings, ken—"
you slammed the laptop shut.
"shut the fuck up."
from now on, nanami would not be attending work meetings past 9PM.

Ayo, someone by the name of Curly-B-Blog is redlining art of yours from 2020 (while pretending that it's actually Sai Scribble's work), and kind of being a dick about it. just thought you should know.
You know, originally I was just gonna brush it off, but then I went back to look at my old SU art from 2020 and did so much self reflection from then till now.
I think this was around the time I was just learning how to do perspective and tried to use the perspective tool on Procreate for the first time? :0 and I remember telling Sai “Sai I have this STUPID idea, I CANT believe it this stupid joke it’s so DUMBBBB, it’s living rent free in my BRAIN I SWEAR THIS IS GONNA BE SO STUPID DCIUWHEFIUWHIRFUIW4F” and being super excited to show her the finished product. People still think Sai created the Cursed Skin Gloves comic and I think it’s hilarious wjhwnuhwijwuiw
Tumblr media
The comic was received very well and it made LOTS of people laugh and I’m still proud of this comic to this very day! :D and tbh if it wasn’t for my obsession for Sai’s Switcheroo AU I never would have found my passion in comic work! (love you you stinky hoe @saiscribbles 🩷)
Tumblr media
HOWEVER…. I definitely still had lots to learn! I wasn’t very good at perspective at the time I’ll admit, but I was definitely having lots of fun learning :3
And throughout the past 4 years, ALOT has happened.
I graduated from college with TWO fancy pieces of expensive papers in Visual Development in Animation and Illustration learning from Will Kim and Jeff Soto, and as a I was working with the funny voice man Cougar MacDowall as a comic/story artist and reached in total around 7 million views for my fan series FNAF Security Malware Breached (it was even #21 on the trending list around the time of my birthday 🩷 what a lovely gift), had an insane opportunity to work with Mike Geno and with the voice cast from The Amazing Digital Circus for a fan song as a background and character asset artist, Vivienne Medrano liking and sharing my silly Overlord Husk AU comics, currently on my route to getting my certificate from Aaron Blaise’s Character design program and graduating from Marc Brunet Art School, and now I am completing my first year as professional colorist and art assistant for my storyboard and comic mentor Michelle Lam, aka Mewtripled! (Also I’ll be heading out to Lightbox Expo 2024 on October 26 with Michelle and the team so if y’all ever wanna meetup hahahajaj wink wink wink wink wink)
So you can say I learned ALOT and I enjoyed every minute of what I do :D I try to be humble about my accomplishments because blah blah being humble good yes yes but this time I wanna be selfish and say HELL YEAH I DID ALL THIS!!! AND IM SO EXTREMELY PROUD OF MYSELF FIUGEIURGERGGRS
Now here’s my most recent comic page that I posted like 2 days ago without the text.
Tumblr media
That’s pretty freakin wild to me, I can’t believe I used to draw Steven Universe art like that back in 2020 LOL LIKE GUYS I DREW THIS!! WITH!!! MY HANDS!!! IS THAT NOT INSANE!!!???
Anyways moral of the story:
Learn from everyone and everything! Yes, even then mean ones too! If you can learn to work with anyone, I promise you’ll get to where you want to be faster. People can be a little mean on the internet, but that shouldn’t stop you from being where you want to be in the future. I’m so EXTREMELY grateful for all the opportunities and to all the kind professionals who were willing to give me a chance. Seriously, I’m so graciously thankful for everything, and I hope everyone here will support me and my silly little comics I will do now and in the future!
And one more thing:
Don’t be a jerk. Be to be nice to everyone :D nothing good comes out when you’re bad to everyone.

I'm loving the animal reference repository!! Such a fantastic resource and I can't wait to use some of these photos for studies or painting reference. I was just wondering, is there a way to download the photos from the website? On one hand I can imagine you disabled this purposefully to prevent AI scraping or other unwanted use. But at the same time it can be handy for people to have high res photos to work with, and I personally like to have my reference photos in the photoshop file next to my drawing. (Also I was one of the people who asked about contributing photos. I honestly think the first 3 points you mentioned could be worked around quite easily. However the 4th (workload) is one I can't argue against of course. I'll see if I can make a small donation and if you ever do open up contributions... I'll be happy to share!!)
Yes! I want people to be able to save images, and you can! But Squarespace's image gallery setup makes it a pain to do. I've actually got a page on the site showing how to do that - do I need to make it more prominent?
The important thing to know is that when you click on a single image, it opens in a "lightbox" display, which for complicated web reasons won't let you save files directly from it. Saving has to be done when viewing the larger gallery page (the species page with all the images).
On mobile:
In gallery view, tap and hold on the image again you’re interested in saving. Tap “Save to Photos” to save it to your phone.
This will not work if you are viewing a single image full-screen on mobile. If viewing the image full-screen you can take a screenshot, but the resulting image will be lower resolution than if you saved it from the gallery view.
How this looks will vary on Android devices, but I've had friends confirm the pathing is pretty much the same even if the layout is a little different.
Tumblr media
On desktop:
In gallery view, right click on the image you want to save and click on the “Save Image As” option.
This will not work if you are viewing a single shot full-screen in lightbox mode. If viewing a photo full-screen you can take a screenshot, but the resulting file will be lower resolution than if you saved it from the gallery view.
Tumblr media
This worked when I set the site up, shoot me a note if it's broken since then.
The gallery pages allow me to mass-upload files so I don't have to do individual photo uploads, and they're more responsive on mobile... but this is the downside to that ease of use on the back-end.

portfiend's oc directory template
three weeks ago i began work on a little Eleventy-based website template for storing character information akin to Toyhou.se. it's been in a releasable state for about a week, but i've also been pushing updates to it near daily!
i also wrote up a quick tutorial for setting up the project on its download page, but i plan to improve it in the future.
click here to preview this template: NeoCities click here to get the code: GitHub
features:
built-in "namespaces" for characters, locations, and stories, with their own page templates and information card formats
uses eleventy's tagging system to allow you to tag pages for fine categorization
a big focus on linking to other pages. each "creative" page lets you navigate between the previous/next item in the category. pages have a "linked pages" list that allow you to navigate to related pages, including "what links here"
a content filtering system allowing developers to hide/blur certain content from people who have not opted into it. optionally supports needing to click an "i am 18+" box before entering the site
lightbox images; clickable image links that can reveal metadata such as captions and artist credits
tabbed views allow you to view specific sections of content at a time, used in the various creative pages
SASS wrapper for optional better-formatted stylesheets. don't know how to use SASS syntax? SASS also supports regular CSS!
this project is licensed under MIT License.

since twitter has become actively hostile to its users, so they came to tumblr, and reddit has become actively hostile to its users, so they came to tumblr, what do we do now that tumblr is becoming (more) actively hostile to its users? i’ve been here for over a decade so i know tumblr users are the type to cling on despite everything and revel in undoing every change, but i’m so tired of the way this website breaks the way it fundamentally works in order to appeal to new users. the twitterfication of the site seems so much worse than when people jumped ship after the porn ban, and even then, only small communities (and twitter) cropped up as solutions. you might not be the person to ask for a definitive answer, but i figured a tech blog might be interested in considering - what do we do when there’s nowhere left to go?
Okay so, I mean this very seriously: how has tumblr meaningfully become like twitter?
I don't personally find the sidebar view obnoxious and it seems to me like just another layout change that's pretty typical to tumblr. New users are getting signed up with a bit more emphasis on algorithmic feeds, but that is still very easy to change (MUCH easier than on any other social platform) and the algorithm has been there for everyone for quite a while, we just typically don't notice it because a lot of long-term tumblr users don't go into the "for you" feed.
I don't think that tumblr *has* fundamentally broken the way that it works to appeal to new users. My dash now is still very much like my dash in 2019, and still very much like my dash in 2018 (though much less pornographic). Reblogs are still reblogs, likes are still likes. Replies, for all that they seem like they've been around forever, are new and good and I think they work well. I'm irritated that the notes menu doesn't have a "view all" option but I think that's a worthwhile tradeoff for an easy way to see tags.
I *do not* understand why tumblr has broken linking back to previous reblogs but I don't think that's out of an effort to act like twitter; it is a bizarre choice that I dislike and don't understand but I also don't think that it has fundamentally changed the way the site works and i mean you've been around long enough that I'm sure you've had the same experience I have of going into the notes of a post and randomly clicking until you found a version that you wanted to reblog without a bunch of bullshit at the bottom. Tumblr has always kind of sucked, this change DOES suck but it doesn't suck in a way that is particularly novel or insurmountable. (For instance, I think this change sucks MUCH LESS than when they made posts with links invisible to the search, that is something that is genuinely bad that has been long lasting but doesn't get brought up much in lists of the ways that tumblr has gone wrong)
Tumblr *is* changing, but I think it is changing more incrementally and less terribly than other parts of the internet. I also hate the floating clown, the login walls, the dash-only view for blogs (you can't archive it and I HATE that), and - to an extent - the new lightbox on mobile. And I dislike that less than I thought I would but I don't think it's a fundamental change that necessarily impacts my interactions with the site - it *adds* a feature that I don't care for but it doesn't *break* anything that I require to have a good time on tumblr - in that way I think of it very much like Live. People hate Live so much and I find that perplexing because it is so easy to simply ignore it.
But that's not really your question; that's just some stuff I want people to think about because as much as tumblr has changed in the last two years it is nowhere near as fucked up as the recent things that twitter and reddit have pulled.
So, as to your question: where do we go?
Well. Not to be an extremely old person on the internet, but damned if I don't miss email lists. And forums. God I miss forums. Neither of those things has all the bonuses of platforms like twitter or reddit or tumblr or facebook, but they were great ways to hang out with people you liked on the internet.
The internet is changing. I can feel it, you can feel it, I'm pretty sure we're all like cattle in a field lifting our noses and hearing some distant rumbling and becoming slowly aware that it's almost time to run. There's a coming stampede and it isn't here yet but you know it's on its way. You're not imagining that, that's how things feel right now and there are a shitload of things contributing to it.
Things like SESTA/FOSTA and KOSA (which has not passed yet but is a big red flag waving on the horizon) have been eroding away the way that users on various platforms can function. Some platforms have consolidated in ways that harm users; some new platforms have popped up and shaken up the map of the internet; some platforms are being torn apart brick by brick by owners who don't care about the users. It kind of seems like people are actually looking up and realizing that advertising is A) bad and B) doesn't actually work and I think we're running straight toward another advertising-based crash like we saw in 2017. It feels like all the desperate things that tumblr is doing is just rearranging deck chairs on the titanic as the internet as a whole starts to sink into the ocean.
Honestly, I don't think it's that bad. I think it *feels* bad, but I think we're looking at a slow whimpering death of the platforms, not a bang. I think tumblr is going to hang on at least for a few years and I think it's going to end up like livejournal and myspace, which both still exist as websites that are recognizable as updated versions of the sites they were in 2004-2010. The thing that I think would really, honestly hurt tumblr in a fundamental way is if it moved to a more algorithmic and data-sales based model of advertising, and I think that's still pretty distant. I think Automattic is aware that killing the chronological feed would be the one unforgivable sin that would cause a mass exodus and a final crash, and I think when we see that, when we can't just scroll through the feed and see what our friends did that day in order of when they did it, that's when the party is over here.
But that's still not answering your question.
So, where do we go? What do we do? Well, for now, I'd say it's a good time to get contact info for your friends across various platforms. Get email addresses, get phone numbers.
Now is also the time for you to set up a personal website. NeoCities is currently the best place to do this, though it takes a lot more effort than just starting a blog on tumblr. I think that various oldschool blogging sites like Wordpress and Blogger/Blogspot/whatever the hell the google one is are a better place to have your emergency backup than a more platform-y platform if you aren't up to doing something with NeoCities.
If you've got the ability to do so and a group of people who are interested in the same core subject, set up a forum. There's a decent amount of off-the-shelf forum software out there and a text-and-small-images forum isn't prohibitively expensive, but it's never going to be huge and you're never going to have the kind of spread and virality and random connections that you would on a platform with millions or billions of users.
If you can't set up a forum, setting up or joining a discord server for your friends is a decent enough option at the moment, and may be a very good option for people who are looking to keep their interactions more private.
But yeah i think right now is a great time for people to start setting up their own personal websites, to start visiting actual webpages again, to start bookmarking their friends' websites, and to start collecting contact info that isn't tied to platforms.

I know we're all complaining about the new layout — I know, it's really stupid, it looks like Twitter — but I want to share with you this bug report I sent to Staff, as I believe it contextualises why the "changing features that aren't broken just because you can" ideal from Tumblr's higher ups ends up making the lives more difficult for a lot of its users; more specifically disabled folks.
Good afternoon, When using Lightbox View I need to click on the image for the caption to disappear — this is absolutely necessary as I'm visually impaired, and have the letter size on max, and when viewing an image the Lightbox View caption occupies an excessive amount of my screen, so seeing an image is not easy — however this made me discover two things:
1. If you click on the area where the caption is, even when it's hidden, it will take you to whatever blog was in the caption. This is quite annoying as I'm actually trying to zoom in but keep being accidentally transported to someone else's blog. (AKA the caption seems only to become invisible, but it's still there, so when I click around the caption is supposed to be it'll act as if it's still there)
2. If you try to zoom in in that caption area not only can you not zoom in but it will also make the caption appear again, however you won't be able to make it disappear again by clicking on any area of the image. The caption will be there without you being able to make it disappear. I will add obviously none of this was a problem in the old image viewer, I don't have any intrusive captions or accidentally going to other images and blogs that I don't want to go to. Please I beg you to give us an option to return to the old image viewer on the dashboard. You also made it more difficult to click on a post to only see that specific post, something I did a lot since it allowed me to use the old image viewer. Previously I could click on the user's name and it would open it on their blogs. That would do the trick. Now you have to click on the surrounding blank space but because, again, of my accessibility features I need to have on to be able to use Tumblr, there are almost no blank spaces available for me to click on! I assume you're aware this is not a problem of the accessibility features themselves, as I had no qualms about any of this previous to these new features being implemented, but a fault of your new features that are inaccessible and are causing more harm than good.

Sam Goody stores at Universal CityWalk & Horton Plaza (1993 & 1995)
"The synthesis of three distinct merchandising departments for the new Sam Goody store at the Universal Citywalk exhibits a design of dynamic expression by the Jerde Partnership design team.
The new building sits on the center court of an outdoor shopping mall in Southern California. Representing the three merchandising concepts of Sam Goody, the design pronounces each area through unique and interrelated façades.
The customer enters the Popular Music department through an animated, neon-accented color plaster façade. The entrance to the Classics department and the upstairs Coffee Cafe is between two 40 foot high, 10 foot in diameter Corinthian columns within an interpretative classical façade. A 35 foot high, two-dimensional profile sign depicting King Kong climbing the face of a black and metallic bronze tile building hangs over the entrance to Suncoast Motion Picture Company (video).
The central sales environment is referred to as Backstage, and has the character and atmosphere of a soundstage/studio. The two-story space is defined by upper level catwalks and the destination mezzanine known as the Coffee Cafe. A three-dimensional, walk-through Media Wall features music advertising, photos, oversized images, photo lightboxes, video monitors, projected music videos, reader boards and graphic elements.
Media events are orchestrated throughout the day in an ever-changing environment that depicts the trends of popular music and movies. Weather reports, current events and promotional messages continuously scroll by on the reader boards. In-store performances, CD signings and record promotions bring a sense of "an event" to the store. A live VJ/DJ controls all aspects of the store's music and video media, and interacts with the customers.
On a floating piano-shaped level, the Classics department features a state-of-the-art inventory of classical and jazz selections and creates a controlled, intimate area for the customer with special acoustics, localized sound systems, listening stations and lighting. In the Suncoast Motion Picture Company department, tall video columns accent the environment, supporting the sale of videos and laserdiscs. Interspersed throughout the department are video monitors creating the effect of video confetti.
The Coffee Cafe features a wide variety of interactive listening stations and media experiences. It is intended to be an intimate environment where the customer can pause, enjoy the fare, engage in conversation and take in views of the store as well as the street below through its windows."

A wider angle of Dieter's studio from Nancy Drew: Danger by Design.
Compared to the in-game view (lower image), you can see more detail of the studio, including the legs of Dieter's desk. Additional lighting effects added by the artist to the fish tank and lightbox that were not present in-game.

There's an exhibit currently at the Harold Washington Library Center, showing embroidery work by Connie Toebe; I got to see it the last time I was there to use the study rooms, and very much enjoyed it; she doesn't only do white-on-white work, but I found myself entranced by those pieces in particular. I did wish it was work that was up in an ordinary gallery somewhere, instead of a couple of cabinets and lightboxes in the entry lobby of the library's eighth floor.
I think the press about it is billing it as slightly more wildly fanciful than it is, but here are two of the more entertaining pieces -- the top one is a woman walking her pet iguana (I didn't note the title), and the bottom one is titled "Cat Woman in the Rain."
Toebe also has a website where you can view and purchase a lot of her work, so check her out!
[ID: Two images of white embroidery on white cotton fabric; both show women in high-waisted regency dresses and slippers. In the top image, the woman is in a garden, walking a large iguana on a leash; in the bottom image, the woman has the head of a cat, Egyptian-god style, and is using her shawl to keep the rain off her fur.]
