I am glad I turned off automatic updates on Google play because I have some reviews from what people have been saying + I have kinda seen it already with Tumblr TV. And this review is more than "stop trying to be Tiktok" which I will also agree and complain about.
The fact that you can't zoom on an image is taking a feature out. When it is a necessary feature. See: I am visually impaired
If you scroll down on an image and it appears an image from someone you do not follow it defeats the purpose of the dashboard curated experience
Taking off the ability to see how long a video lasts os not a good thing. And that ball in the video progress bar is there for a reason. It lets you see easily where you are in the video. See, again: I. am. visually impaired.

For those of you blessed enough not to have this new test feature, this is what you get when you click on a photo or video in the app. You can then scroll through entirely unrelated pictures/videos and have to back out a page to get back to your dash.
Oh, and you can’t zoom in or slide the bar to change where you’re at in the video in this view.

Porn isn't allowed on Tumblr but somehow Tumblr's inability to deal with the porn bots has led to any post recommended by the "Because You Follow" feature having a 75% of being porn

Some Tumblr Tricks
1. Get a random blogpost from a blog
You like the content of a blog but theres just so much content and you want to see some older stuff? Great, just append /random to the URL and a random blogpost from that blog will be shown:
BLOGNAME.tumblr.com/random
2. Use Keyboard Shortcuts
When you are on your dashboard you can use the following keybinds:
J -> Scroll forward K -> Scroll backward L -> Like the current post N -> See the number of notes Shift + E -> Add post to your queue Shift + R -> Fast reblog Z + Tab -> Quickly switch between dashboard and blog Z + C -> Quickly compose a post Space -> View photoset in a lightbox or start playing a video post
3. More URL tricks
Show all posts with a specific tag:
BLOGNAME.tumblr.com/tagged/<tag>
Sort entries with a specific tag in chronological order
BLOGNAME.tumblr.com/tagged/<tag>/chrono
Get all Posts from a date
BLOGNAME.tumblr.com/day/JJJ/MM/TT
PS: Do not forget you can go totally crazy with the custom theme editor by for example adding a music player https://www.scmplayer.net/ or whatever. Make personal websites cringe again!

🌟 New
We’ve just launched Blaze Pro, a self-serve and stand-alone advertising platform for Tumblr!
The unified Blaze dashboard from the web has now joined the apps! First, make sure your app is up to date, then visit your blog (tap the snowman icon at the bottom-right), and tap the flame icon near the top.
To avoid confusion with Communities, Community Labels are now Content Labels, and Community Guidelines are now User Guidelines.
Also, the Community category of the support form has been re-assigned to Communities. Please feel free to use that for any questions, concerns, comments, or bugs regarding Communities.
We’ve added Community Invitation push notifications to our mobile apps! When someone with push notifications enabled in the latest app is invited to a Community, they will now receive a push notification instead of a message from Tumblrbot.
We’ve added “This ad has autoplaying audio” to the available reasons when reporting an ad!
🛠 Fixed
An update for the Android app to stop ads with autoplaying audio is rolling out, so please update as soon as it’s available for you!
You can once again navigate between images in a photoset from the lightbox when viewing a blog page directly, such as staff.tumblr.com.
For a brief time yesterday, queued and scheduled posts were not posting. This has now been fixed, and everything that should have been posted was eventually posted. If not, please check your drafts!
🚧 Ongoing
No ongoing incidents to speak of right now.
🌱 Upcoming
No upcoming launches to announce today.
Experiencing an issue? Check for Known Issues and file a Support Request if you have something new. We’ll get back to you as soon as we can!
Want to share your feedback about something? Check out our Work in Progress blog and start a discussion with the community.
Wanna support Tumblr directly with some money? Check out the new Supporter badge in TumblrMart!

Ayo, someone by the name of Curly-B-Blog is redlining art of yours from 2020 (while pretending that it's actually Sai Scribble's work), and kind of being a dick about it. just thought you should know.
You know, originally I was just gonna brush it off, but then I went back to look at my old SU art from 2020 and did so much self reflection from then till now.
I think this was around the time I was just learning how to do perspective and tried to use the perspective tool on Procreate for the first time? :0 and I remember telling Sai “Sai I have this STUPID idea, I CANT believe it this stupid joke it’s so DUMBBBB, it’s living rent free in my BRAIN I SWEAR THIS IS GONNA BE SO STUPID DCIUWHEFIUWHIRFUIW4F” and being super excited to show her the finished product. People still think Sai created the Cursed Skin Gloves comic and I think it’s hilarious wjhwnuhwijwuiw
Tumblr media
The comic was received very well and it made LOTS of people laugh and I’m still proud of this comic to this very day! :D and tbh if it wasn’t for my obsession for Sai’s Switcheroo AU I never would have found my passion in comic work! (love you you stinky hoe @saiscribbles 🩷)
Tumblr media
HOWEVER…. I definitely still had lots to learn! I wasn’t very good at perspective at the time I’ll admit, but I was definitely having lots of fun learning :3
And throughout the past 4 years, ALOT has happened.
I graduated from college with TWO fancy pieces of expensive papers in Visual Development in Animation and Illustration learning from Will Kim and Jeff Soto, and as a I was working with the funny voice man Cougar MacDowall as a comic/story artist and reached in total around 7 million views for my fan series FNAF Security Malware Breached (it was even #21 on the trending list around the time of my birthday 🩷 what a lovely gift), had an insane opportunity to work with Mike Geno and with the voice cast from The Amazing Digital Circus for a fan song as a background and character asset artist, Vivienne Medrano liking and sharing my silly Overlord Husk AU comics, currently on my route to getting my certificate from Aaron Blaise’s Character design program and graduating from Marc Brunet Art School, and now I am completing my first year as professional colorist and art assistant for my storyboard and comic mentor Michelle Lam, aka Mewtripled! (Also I’ll be heading out to Lightbox Expo 2024 on October 26 with Michelle and the team so if y’all ever wanna meetup hahahajaj wink wink wink wink wink)
So you can say I learned ALOT and I enjoyed every minute of what I do :D I try to be humble about my accomplishments because blah blah being humble good yes yes but this time I wanna be selfish and say HELL YEAH I DID ALL THIS!!! AND IM SO EXTREMELY PROUD OF MYSELF FIUGEIURGERGGRS
Now here’s my most recent comic page that I posted like 2 days ago without the text.
Tumblr media
That’s pretty freakin wild to me, I can’t believe I used to draw Steven Universe art like that back in 2020 LOL LIKE GUYS I DREW THIS!! WITH!!! MY HANDS!!! IS THAT NOT INSANE!!!???
Anyways moral of the story:
Learn from everyone and everything! Yes, even then mean ones too! If you can learn to work with anyone, I promise you’ll get to where you want to be faster. People can be a little mean on the internet, but that shouldn’t stop you from being where you want to be in the future. I’m so EXTREMELY grateful for all the opportunities and to all the kind professionals who were willing to give me a chance. Seriously, I’m so graciously thankful for everything, and I hope everyone here will support me and my silly little comics I will do now and in the future!
And one more thing:
Don’t be a jerk. Be to be nice to everyone :D nothing good comes out when you’re bad to everyone.

since twitter has become actively hostile to its users, so they came to tumblr, and reddit has become actively hostile to its users, so they came to tumblr, what do we do now that tumblr is becoming (more) actively hostile to its users? i’ve been here for over a decade so i know tumblr users are the type to cling on despite everything and revel in undoing every change, but i’m so tired of the way this website breaks the way it fundamentally works in order to appeal to new users. the twitterfication of the site seems so much worse than when people jumped ship after the porn ban, and even then, only small communities (and twitter) cropped up as solutions. you might not be the person to ask for a definitive answer, but i figured a tech blog might be interested in considering - what do we do when there’s nowhere left to go?
Okay so, I mean this very seriously: how has tumblr meaningfully become like twitter?
I don't personally find the sidebar view obnoxious and it seems to me like just another layout change that's pretty typical to tumblr. New users are getting signed up with a bit more emphasis on algorithmic feeds, but that is still very easy to change (MUCH easier than on any other social platform) and the algorithm has been there for everyone for quite a while, we just typically don't notice it because a lot of long-term tumblr users don't go into the "for you" feed.
I don't think that tumblr *has* fundamentally broken the way that it works to appeal to new users. My dash now is still very much like my dash in 2019, and still very much like my dash in 2018 (though much less pornographic). Reblogs are still reblogs, likes are still likes. Replies, for all that they seem like they've been around forever, are new and good and I think they work well. I'm irritated that the notes menu doesn't have a "view all" option but I think that's a worthwhile tradeoff for an easy way to see tags.
I *do not* understand why tumblr has broken linking back to previous reblogs but I don't think that's out of an effort to act like twitter; it is a bizarre choice that I dislike and don't understand but I also don't think that it has fundamentally changed the way the site works and i mean you've been around long enough that I'm sure you've had the same experience I have of going into the notes of a post and randomly clicking until you found a version that you wanted to reblog without a bunch of bullshit at the bottom. Tumblr has always kind of sucked, this change DOES suck but it doesn't suck in a way that is particularly novel or insurmountable. (For instance, I think this change sucks MUCH LESS than when they made posts with links invisible to the search, that is something that is genuinely bad that has been long lasting but doesn't get brought up much in lists of the ways that tumblr has gone wrong)
Tumblr *is* changing, but I think it is changing more incrementally and less terribly than other parts of the internet. I also hate the floating clown, the login walls, the dash-only view for blogs (you can't archive it and I HATE that), and - to an extent - the new lightbox on mobile. And I dislike that less than I thought I would but I don't think it's a fundamental change that necessarily impacts my interactions with the site - it *adds* a feature that I don't care for but it doesn't *break* anything that I require to have a good time on tumblr - in that way I think of it very much like Live. People hate Live so much and I find that perplexing because it is so easy to simply ignore it.
But that's not really your question; that's just some stuff I want people to think about because as much as tumblr has changed in the last two years it is nowhere near as fucked up as the recent things that twitter and reddit have pulled.
So, as to your question: where do we go?
Well. Not to be an extremely old person on the internet, but damned if I don't miss email lists. And forums. God I miss forums. Neither of those things has all the bonuses of platforms like twitter or reddit or tumblr or facebook, but they were great ways to hang out with people you liked on the internet.
The internet is changing. I can feel it, you can feel it, I'm pretty sure we're all like cattle in a field lifting our noses and hearing some distant rumbling and becoming slowly aware that it's almost time to run. There's a coming stampede and it isn't here yet but you know it's on its way. You're not imagining that, that's how things feel right now and there are a shitload of things contributing to it.
Things like SESTA/FOSTA and KOSA (which has not passed yet but is a big red flag waving on the horizon) have been eroding away the way that users on various platforms can function. Some platforms have consolidated in ways that harm users; some new platforms have popped up and shaken up the map of the internet; some platforms are being torn apart brick by brick by owners who don't care about the users. It kind of seems like people are actually looking up and realizing that advertising is A) bad and B) doesn't actually work and I think we're running straight toward another advertising-based crash like we saw in 2017. It feels like all the desperate things that tumblr is doing is just rearranging deck chairs on the titanic as the internet as a whole starts to sink into the ocean.
Honestly, I don't think it's that bad. I think it *feels* bad, but I think we're looking at a slow whimpering death of the platforms, not a bang. I think tumblr is going to hang on at least for a few years and I think it's going to end up like livejournal and myspace, which both still exist as websites that are recognizable as updated versions of the sites they were in 2004-2010. The thing that I think would really, honestly hurt tumblr in a fundamental way is if it moved to a more algorithmic and data-sales based model of advertising, and I think that's still pretty distant. I think Automattic is aware that killing the chronological feed would be the one unforgivable sin that would cause a mass exodus and a final crash, and I think when we see that, when we can't just scroll through the feed and see what our friends did that day in order of when they did it, that's when the party is over here.
But that's still not answering your question.
So, where do we go? What do we do? Well, for now, I'd say it's a good time to get contact info for your friends across various platforms. Get email addresses, get phone numbers.
Now is also the time for you to set up a personal website. NeoCities is currently the best place to do this, though it takes a lot more effort than just starting a blog on tumblr. I think that various oldschool blogging sites like Wordpress and Blogger/Blogspot/whatever the hell the google one is are a better place to have your emergency backup than a more platform-y platform if you aren't up to doing something with NeoCities.
If you've got the ability to do so and a group of people who are interested in the same core subject, set up a forum. There's a decent amount of off-the-shelf forum software out there and a text-and-small-images forum isn't prohibitively expensive, but it's never going to be huge and you're never going to have the kind of spread and virality and random connections that you would on a platform with millions or billions of users.
If you can't set up a forum, setting up or joining a discord server for your friends is a decent enough option at the moment, and may be a very good option for people who are looking to keep their interactions more private.
But yeah i think right now is a great time for people to start setting up their own personal websites, to start visiting actual webpages again, to start bookmarking their friends' websites, and to start collecting contact info that isn't tied to platforms.

Because of the great decisions over at @staff or their higher ups (/s) the Lightbox view has turned into the norm so I am officially only using the web now. Even on my phone.
This is not out of protest but out of necessity as despite sending support around three tickets complaining, explaining and begging to have an option to turn it off they not only don't wanna do that but also they're making it the standard image viewer.
It genuinely makes my experience on Tumblr way worse, much less fun and much more stressful, to a point where using the browser version of Tumblr is preferable.

portfiend's oc directory template
three weeks ago i began work on a little Eleventy-based website template for storing character information akin to Toyhou.se. it's been in a releasable state for about a week, but i've also been pushing updates to it near daily!
i also wrote up a quick tutorial for setting up the project on its download page, but i plan to improve it in the future.
click here to preview this template: NeoCities click here to get the code: GitHub
features:
built-in "namespaces" for characters, locations, and stories, with their own page templates and information card formats
uses eleventy's tagging system to allow you to tag pages for fine categorization
a big focus on linking to other pages. each "creative" page lets you navigate between the previous/next item in the category. pages have a "linked pages" list that allow you to navigate to related pages, including "what links here"
a content filtering system allowing developers to hide/blur certain content from people who have not opted into it. optionally supports needing to click an "i am 18+" box before entering the site
lightbox images; clickable image links that can reveal metadata such as captions and artist credits
tabbed views allow you to view specific sections of content at a time, used in the various creative pages
SASS wrapper for optional better-formatted stylesheets. don't know how to use SASS syntax? SASS also supports regular CSS!
this project is licensed under MIT License.

Sam Goody stores at Universal CityWalk & Horton Plaza (1993 & 1995)
"The synthesis of three distinct merchandising departments for the new Sam Goody store at the Universal Citywalk exhibits a design of dynamic expression by the Jerde Partnership design team.
The new building sits on the center court of an outdoor shopping mall in Southern California. Representing the three merchandising concepts of Sam Goody, the design pronounces each area through unique and interrelated façades.
The customer enters the Popular Music department through an animated, neon-accented color plaster façade. The entrance to the Classics department and the upstairs Coffee Cafe is between two 40 foot high, 10 foot in diameter Corinthian columns within an interpretative classical façade. A 35 foot high, two-dimensional profile sign depicting King Kong climbing the face of a black and metallic bronze tile building hangs over the entrance to Suncoast Motion Picture Company (video).
The central sales environment is referred to as Backstage, and has the character and atmosphere of a soundstage/studio. The two-story space is defined by upper level catwalks and the destination mezzanine known as the Coffee Cafe. A three-dimensional, walk-through Media Wall features music advertising, photos, oversized images, photo lightboxes, video monitors, projected music videos, reader boards and graphic elements.
Media events are orchestrated throughout the day in an ever-changing environment that depicts the trends of popular music and movies. Weather reports, current events and promotional messages continuously scroll by on the reader boards. In-store performances, CD signings and record promotions bring a sense of "an event" to the store. A live VJ/DJ controls all aspects of the store's music and video media, and interacts with the customers.
On a floating piano-shaped level, the Classics department features a state-of-the-art inventory of classical and jazz selections and creates a controlled, intimate area for the customer with special acoustics, localized sound systems, listening stations and lighting. In the Suncoast Motion Picture Company department, tall video columns accent the environment, supporting the sale of videos and laserdiscs. Interspersed throughout the department are video monitors creating the effect of video confetti.
The Coffee Cafe features a wide variety of interactive listening stations and media experiences. It is intended to be an intimate environment where the customer can pause, enjoy the fare, engage in conversation and take in views of the store as well as the street below through its windows."
Designed by The Jerde Partnership
Scanned from: Stores - Retail Display & Design (1997), Great Store Design 2 (1996), Shops & Boutiques (1994)

There's an exhibit currently at the Harold Washington Library Center, showing embroidery work by Connie Toebe; I got to see it the last time I was there to use the study rooms, and very much enjoyed it; she doesn't only do white-on-white work, but I found myself entranced by those pieces in particular. I did wish it was work that was up in an ordinary gallery somewhere, instead of a couple of cabinets and lightboxes in the entry lobby of the library's eighth floor.
I think the press about it is billing it as slightly more wildly fanciful than it is, but here are two of the more entertaining pieces -- the top one is a woman walking her pet iguana (I didn't note the title), and the bottom one is titled "Cat Woman in the Rain."
Toebe also has a website where you can view and purchase a lot of her work, so check her out!
[ID: Two images of white embroidery on white cotton fabric; both show women in high-waisted regency dresses and slippers. In the top image, the woman is in a garden, walking a large iguana on a leash; in the bottom image, the woman has the head of a cat, Egyptian-god style, and is using her shawl to keep the rain off her fur.]

what you can do about the new tumblr mobile update:
1. leave feedback on their update post
2. email your opinion under category: feedback
3. leave a review for the mobile app
i've been on this site a long time and know users get upset about changes all the time, so i'm sure @staff filters out "first reaction" bias
to get around that, i think it'll be most helpful if you come at this from a constructive criticism approach as opposed to insulting them. if you outline what you don't like and why, that gives them something actionable to work on and shows your opinion isn't just because it's new and scary
for example: instead of saying "new lightbox mode sucks change it back" say "i use tumblr primarily for enjoying art. lightbox mode makes this much harder to do because i can't zoom in (necessary for mobile viewing due to screen size) and the permanent ui overlay obstructs the image"
this helps the developers understand what the problem is and shows our opinions are based on quality of life rather than resistance to change
