Do you have a favourite episode of She-ra or are there multiple that you have?

save the cat 10/10 there has never been a better ep of television and there never will be.. id been dreaming about their reunion for so long and it was better than anything i imagined like they renewed their childhood promise!!!! and catra inspiring adoras transformation was probably my favorite scene in the whole show AND SO MANY OTHER THINGS AHH i could talk about it forever

Heart Pt. 2 was mind blowing in the way that it concluded their arcs and had these amazing implications about destiny and purpose and love etc etc but save the cat was just.. so well executed. their reunion made me more emotional than the kiss i think just purely in terms of storytelling

ok actually i didnt know how to articulate this until now but. everything that happened in 5x05 was what i pictured when i imagined the finale of the show. like the transformation and the promise callback. i thought those things would be what brings their story full circle. so when they happened in EPISODE FIVE i was like oh this season is about to be crazyyy 😦😦😦 5x05 was like the conclusion of their friends to enemies back to friends arc, but what i never let myself truly hope for was that final friends to lovers arc. that last piece was so far beyond anything i imagined happening. 5x05 though, that reunion, that was the episode that i had been super invested in since season 1. i think thats why its my favorite even tho 5x13 is arguably like the more satisfying conclusion to everything.

perhaps unsurprisingly, i wear a lot of black, and also skeletons, and also cats. but i like lots of styles of dress!!! its almost easier to tell you that what i DONT like is dresses and skirts, they really make me feel uncomfortable. very... casual in what i wear, and sometimes its cute and tomboyish, other times i am just deadass wearing boy clothes gjskg. if i had more means, id probably dress... nicer, also. alas...

GOD, like, disgustingly. absolutely LOVE getting shit together and where it needs to be. the aftermath??? better than drugs. everything IMMACULATE. tidy. easy to locate. if i could just maintain it that would be phenomenal, but then id deprive myself the immense pleasure of doing Everything, All At Once.

that depends on the week! im learning korean (한국어를 좋아해요!) so a small part of that involves me poking around and learning a little more about why there are certain sayings that are the way they are, and then i realize i have never known anything about anything about korea or china or like anything besides, what. america and some of europe, and a little bit of greece because of my family??? anyway im learning korean so i have an interest in that right now!

Quick first thoughts on the first ep of the Hypmic Anime. Spoilers beware (and im writing this as I watch so :p)

Otome’s speech is.... questionable from a persuasive point of view. Manga did a great job of introducing her (which you can read here) but they really cut out the more terrifying parts of her speech and how she uses force to show people that she's not to be messed with

Its cool seeing everyone in their respective environments though. thats cool. Though they could have added Sasara and Kuuko (shhh i know why they didn’t let me dream)

I love how poppy the typography is. Its amazing how the visuals just leap out at you. The OP does a great job of this. The first few seconds before the title really gives me Persona 4 OG OP vibes with the influx of information given. The rest is a clear concise and streamlined way that still gives character. Animation is sparse but still carries across a general idea of each character and shows off each character object. Rendering is really nice and pays a bit of homage to the posing artwork thats done for the MVs. They also do their division hand signals and thats cute

Love how the OP has blatant HifuDoppo and DRB matchup foreshadowing

so far I really like what theyre going for. BB is about brotherly familial bonds and they show the goods and the bads. Jiro and Saburo bickering right out the gate really cements the fact that they get along like cats and dogs but you can still see that they love each other, working together when the situation calls for it

Now the 3d models. Theyre... not great but usable if you don’t look too hard. They serve their purpose and don’t actively detract from the viewing experience.

Visual typography in the rap itself are fun and poppy but they dont.... speak to me? like theyre there yes and I appreciate them but the only ones that got me excited were from Ichiro’s rap

I love how they interpret the Hypnosis Speakers though. Esp. Saburo’s organs. That was super creative and I love it! If there was one thing that I felt was missing from the franchise was a deeper exploration of the speakers but the anime puts a new and fresh spin on it! Love it, especially with their attack patterns!

If the production team ever feels inclined to, Id love to see those info sheets on Otome’s desk released. There seems to be very interesting info and stats written out about each member (like capabilities, personal status etc.) They all seem unique too so I really really really hope they release images of those sheets

OOOOOOOOKAY MTC. I have such a big biased for them so Im very torn to see what unfolds

Rio striking out on his own is interesting. Out of everyone in MTC hes the biggest team player yet here he trusts his teammates to go ahead. This either displays Rio’s willingness to trust his teammates or it becomes very OOC if the anime wants to set him up as a lone wolf like character

I love how they specify its a drug deal. It means that Jyuto surely will show up and it also shows that Samatoki knows Jyuto’s motives and willingly gives black market info that he knows aligns with Jyuto’s goal. Thats A+ detail writing there and a great establishing characteristic for both of them

OOohhhhhhhhhhhhh man Asunama-san’s voice acting is god tier his work as Samatoki is phenomenal. He pulls of Samatoki’s threatening voice so well with those almost calm words before his voice becomes loud and confrontational. Those rolling syllables in contrast to Komada-san’s almost lyrical and airy speech and Kamio-san’s strict and enunciated words is such a delight to hear. It just speaks to how amazing and great these Seiyuu’s are in order to pull of such amazing work

Im so biased but MTC has such a better rap than BB im so sorry. Just by watching Samatoki’s part, the imagery is amazing. Even the arrival of his Hypnosis Speaker was awesome and sent a shiver down my spine. using the lyrics to form blades and blood was such a great thing to do. Theres so much more variety that just him standing there and shots of his hypnosis speaker. The old fashioned vignette shots, the four panel spread, the nods to old Kurosawa era films are great and I love these small details. Even the typography looks better.

Again, the interpretations with the speakers is fresh and new. Its great and I love the different imagery and attack patterns. Each one is so unique but carries across each different style of rap.

The 3d modles aren’t any better tho lol

(Hi this is Astro who is reading over their assessment again and making a note. Yeah I’m a bit harsh on BB’s rap. I’m not going to change it since I still stand by it and this post is supposed to be a documentation of my first impressions. I think one of the reasons why I’m so harsh on BB is because of their dynamic as a trio of brothers. They Have to have a more uniform approach than the other divisions. Which in of itself isn’t a terrible thing, it just doesn’t catch my eye as much as MTC did. Thats all! I definitely don’t hate BB, they’re maybe my 3rd favorite division out of the current lineup [not including TDD era teams like Kujaku Posse, MCD, and Naughty Busters] its just that their rap was pretty meh)

Samatoki crouching like a real gangstar and the cigarette kiss killed me

sadjkhfjkasdghsadjkcsdjhsdfsjhf im dying i love these trio of dumbasses so uch oh y fod someone save me aaaaaaaa (Astro note here! yeah i died when the jyuto and samatoki’s stomach growled im weak please. Samatoki’s face is just so precious and funny I might set it as a profile pic somewhere)

But also my initial assessment of Rio possibly being characterized as a lone wolf is very much jossed and im very thankful for that. It seems that Rio was simply trusting his teammates to carry out their part of the plan while he carried out his own. I like that, it really shows how much of a team these three are and that they genuinely trust each other. He’s also comfortable enough around them to invite them to dinners after work casually and not just for special occasions.

Oooh! we get Ramuda on his design process which is really cute. the inside of his studio is super cute and retro and i love it. the poppy old music you would hear in a cafe or 90′s resturaunt is also really cute (astro note: yeah i know that in ARB you see the interior of Ramuda’s office but its kinda different seeing it animated)

the translation i have has gentaro speaking in early modern english (Shakespearian english for those who aren’t english nerds like me) but from what I can hear, he doesn’t speak in a particularly old fashioned way? Its more formal than old? and hes speaking without any of his character persona lying thing that he likes to do (as he refers to himself as “Shousei” throughout the segment where hes in Ramuda’s office which is kind of his default pronoun of choice). so its kinda odd for the translation to go in that direction but im not complaining

Gendice banter is gold but it feels... flat? a little? it doesn’t have the same impact as in the drama cds or in the manga? i feel? Also Ramuda using gratuitous english is??? idk how to feel about that

kjshf thats against the rules Ramuda omgggg,,,,,,,, (astro note again: while watching i was under the assumption that using your hypmic for monetary gain such a as buskering [which is what FP is doing] is against the rules. May not be the case but whatever)

FP’s rap might be my favorite in terms of tune and lyrics though. It’s a nice laid back bop and really gives of chill vibes. the integration of 3d and 2d is really nice and i love how they play off each other in the rap. The wordplay is so fun with little nods here and there and the beat is poppy too so it really energizes me.

Ramuda’s rap concerns me slightly since he makes very subtle and small nods towards his past (being created in a laboratory, warfare, and his overall very unpleasant life experiences) but spins it into something cutesy. It could be a coping mechanism, it could be me overthinking it. But it does make me worry a bit. Gentaro and Dice’s rap really play off each other with Gentaro sticking to stories and Dice taking up the baton by carrying on that same imagery but putting his own spin on it.

the self awareness of how scattered they are as a team is interesting though. It doesn’t seem like something you’d speak about in a rap? but i guess since its not really a do or die situation they can afford to be looser on things like this.

Right off the bat, i don’t like how they handled Hifumi and Doppo in relation to Hifumi’s fear of women. Slug made a post once talking about this and I echo many of his sentiments. Hypmic has never been very tactful about tackling this particular issue and while I didn’t have high hopes that the anime would be any better it hurts to see Doppo take away the one thing that allows Hifumi to function within society.

Doppo’s breakdown mirrors a lot of my own mental state when I spiral though its shown a lot quicker than what happens to me oof. that hits close to home. though Jakurai’s advice is. Questionable. Its not the best advice to give to someone but we have no idea what kind of doctor Jakurai is so ill let it slide

Jakurai’s pose looks like hes going to do a mahou shoujou transformation lmao

I don’t have many thoughts about the rap though again. How they visualize the rap is interesting. the different imagery is quite interesting for each of them and the typography is nice a distinct but im still on the fence about the visuals here

The sound is in the same boat. The sound effects either drown out the rap or are too quet but some parts are nice at least. When they talk about Tokyo’s beating heart, the heartbeat sound is a but distracting especially since its only played once. But the imagery is at least nice

I wonder if for the eds they’re going to take a similar approach to what Enstars did and have a four different endings, one for each division. I love the blend of styles here and it really accentuates that although they’re different they mesh well together.

Ramuda’s silhouette though is hilarious. Love it.

:p and thats it. Uh not bad for a first episode. Established all 12 characters really nicely and their dynamics. I had some problems with it but then again nothing is perfect. I look forward to what they show us next week

As for recommendations—if you’re chill with dark/gory/squicky stuff and “fuck” being used as every part of speech, I can’t recommend the Lies of Locke Lamora (and sequels) enough. It’s a lot like Six of Crows, but if Kaz was less edgy and brooding and more “terminal little shit disease.” The characters are amazing. (There’s a black middle-aged female pirate who is a mom of two kids in the second book. The first book isnt as good about this but from then onward the books are very intentional about having an even gender balance in terms of characters.)

The Divine Cities trilogy by Robert Jackson Bennett is amaaaaazing and has some of my favorite female characters in any book ever. I will warn you that the first book is sort of biphobic but...it’s up to you whether they’re enjoyable still or not. (Also kind of dark and gory. Read at your own risk.)

If you’re looking for less gore and darkness, uhh...the Leviathan trilogy by Scott Westerfeld is a fantastic YA/middle grade alt-history trilogy with GORGEOUS illustrations and fantastic worldbuilding and it’s So Much Fun.

My favorite portrayal of dragons in a book essentially ever is...the Dragon Slippers trilogy by Jessica Day George. YES it’s on the middle grade side of things but it’s GOOD. (At least I remember it to be so.)

Probably my second favorite dragon book ever is A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan. Basically it takes place in a Victorian-esque fantasy world and the protagonist is a woman navigating becoming a scientist in a male-dominated culture. It’s written like a memoir and it’s very well done and there are illustrations. The dragons are not as front and center as id like them to be but still a solid book.

If you like romance in books and asking questions about what it means to be human, the Defy the Stars trilogy by Claudia Gray is one YA trilogy that I can wholeheartedly recommend. The core relationship is very healthy and based on respect and the books are easy reads.

This is a contentious opinion, but I did absolutely LOVE Jay Kristoff’s Nevernight. Like. There’s a snarky narrator. A snarky talking cat. A weird, capricious, possibly definitely magical library. Worldbuilding via weird footnotes similar to Discworld. And the worldbuilding is phenomenally unique. This is no surprise about an assassin book, but...warnings for lots and lots of gore and killing. And lots of profanity. And sex scenes. We’re very much *not* talking fade-to-black here.

Borne by Jeff VanderMeer is great. It’s a weird biopunk post-apocalyptic sci-fi with some STRANGE worldbuilding, including a godlike giant levitating bear. The main plot is about a woman who adopts a weird life form who is like...sapient but very much non-human, and he’s like...figuring out how being a, well, being works, and he sometimes eats people, and he’s like her son? And it’s a weird mix of horror and ADORABLE.

Heh. I can’t think of more right now. I hope you find something fun to read though.

I don’t know when it started, when my heart began racing and my palms started sweating, but I remember the moment I realized what it all meant. I remember when she started snorting when I told a joke and my stomach did a somersault. I remember how exciting everything felt. And it’s bittersweet to think now that those little hints of my affection have taken on a new meaning; my palms sweat, my heart skips its beats, and I don’t know what to say... because I know soon she’ll know the truth and then all this will be over.

Below the cut is a little bit more detailed stuff about the package. I put it like that for the sake of keeping the post short lol. 

This is such a cute package. When you get your pack, you’ll get your signature Cheritz box. And once you open inside, you’ll get these cute “flyers” (Honestly tho, they really trying to recruit you. And they really go all out on the whole story feel of it) I found this so hilarious when you open the package, the first thing you see before your Believer pack is the flyers. xD

Honestly. This is so wholesome and I love the flyers. These are going to be hung on the wall for sure lol

The contents of the pack are actually so amazing. And how they pack it is so adorable. I mean look at that little sticker that says “From Ray”. (｡•́︿•̀｡)

Unlike the VIP Package, they follow through and explain more about Ray’s route and how and what happened to him. It also shows how Mint Eye really works out. This pack also sheds some more light on the Choi twins and how tragic their childhood past was. 

This pack is definitely on the darker side of Mystic Messenger and it contains a whole bunch of clues on the psychological aspect of Rika and Saeran. It’s actually quite sad. 

Probably the best part of the pack (Other than the hourglasses lol) are the prints of the package

Probably my favorite print of is the one that is ACTUALLY printed on photo paper?? Look how happy the twins are ;-; On the back of it, you’ll actually see the name of the paper print which is really cool. 

Other than that, the 2 booklets that copy Saerans Diary and Rika’s scrapbook really gave me the feels. ;A;; With Saeran’s Diary, it really reveals and shows how gradually he came to be Ray. And the story is so sad that I almost cried reading it!!

Rika’s scrapbook though, is like the name says, a scrapbook. 

Other than the one that says Show Us Your Bag! lol. It just shows goofy pictures of what’s inside everyone’s bag. I’ll have to take pictures of that later. 

The one thing that really got to me is the small messages that they box gives. 

Like. The time that Cheritz really gives to put every single detail in the package is phenomenal. It makes it like that you’re actually a Mint Eye Believer member irl. Which is why I love Cheritz and Mystic Messenger. They really break the 4th wall in otome games which is an amazing feeling for any otome ho. 

Obviously the soundtrack CD is what it suggests, which is the soundtrack and OST from Rays route. The Special Talk again contains the English translation so when you watch it, you can actually get what they say lol. 

The magnets are the cutest! Although I don’t think I’d actually post it on my fridge haha they are too precious

This is something completely new. They never included magnets in the VIP package so this is actually a treat (๑￫‿ฺ￩๑)

Last thing is the lanyard and the ID card and cards that were included. 

The actual ID card looks and feels like an ACTUAL ID card. It’s actually pretty cool and I’m impressed. Although, the rest of the cards, Saeran, 707, Yoosung, , are actually printed on 5 point paper. So it means it just feels like it’s printed on cheaply. HOWEVER. The way they put the information (like 707′s) is detailed and it’s kinda cool. Only downside is what it’s printed on.

I think this covers mostly of it. LOL If there are any photos you wanna see up close or if I missed something, don’t hesitate to send me a DM and I’ll gladly show you it. However, I’m not sure if I would put up pictures with such details since this is Cheritz stuff already. And that we should be supporting our local and small otome companies. I’ll be posting some more photos in a separate post! I’ll put the link on later on.

I think I broke my links page with too many links, so it’s about time I made a rec post for some of my favorite webcomics! MAYBE YOU’LL FIND SOMETHING NEW TO LOVE.

This will always and forever be an incomplete list as I am always finding/looking for more stuff to read. I’ll probably reblog it every so often when I add more.

COMPLETE: Lady of the Shard by Gigi D.G. - I still haven’t gotten to Cucumber Quest but you had better believe I read this the day it came out. Follows a temple acolyte who is in love with the goddess she serves, and all the complicated turns of events that come out of this. Drawn in a loose, experimental pixel art style that makes it all the more immersive to read. The Less than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal by E.K. Weaver - Eisner-nominated gay roadtrip romance you’ve probably already heard of. Some of the best character acting I’ve ever seen. The Muse Mentor by Amy King - Artistic muses (and one vague notion) try to find their purpose on the astral plane, which happens to look sort of like a cute fantasy version of San Francisco. A sincere and kind-spirited read, highly recommended if you struggle with feeling adrift and inadequate. Also, many drawings of delicious-looking food. Power Ballad by Molly Brooks - I just started this but it’s really fun and funny. A masked vigilante/pop star’s personal assistant develops a crush on her boss. It’s gay, it’s got superheroes, and it’s complete! IN PROGRESS: Agents of the Realm by Mildred Louis - I had a couple false starts getting into this one, not having grown up on Sailor Moon, but then I picked up the first volume at a con and I’m really enjoying it. The unclear, complicated intentions of the mentor figure(s) are intriguing, and I love how the artist draws faces, especially funny reaction faces. Alice and the Nightmare by Misha Krivanek - A magical uni/boarding school piece with super cute art, compelling mysteries, and a Lewis-Carroll-inspired world that’s fresh and fun I.E. not another Hot Topic rehash. FINALLY. Away to Nowhere by Ezra Shape - Monsters and magical beings adapting to life in our world (or a world like ours)--currently just scratching the surface of what seems like some really cool worldbuilding. Features Zio, my nonbinary dragon grandma. Balderdash by Victoria Grace Elliott - Cute coming-of-age witch adventures. Beautiful colors and a richly-textured world. FOOD. So much good food. Banquet by A. Szabla - [coming soon]

Beauty by Eric J. Lee and Rhiannon Rasmussen - From the about page: “Bugpunk Beauty and the Beast” and honestly WHAT MORE DO YOU NEED TO KNOW. Okay I’ll tell you some more: There’s a baroque alien bug civilization rendered in incredible detail. It’s gorgeous.  Blackwater by Jeanette A. and Ren Graham - Episodic supernatural comic set in the small fictional town of Blackwater, Maine. Just started, but the art is extremely polished, expressive, and atmospheric, and the characters are cute. Also it’s queer and full of monsters. Sold.

Brainchild by Suzanne Geary - Paranormal mysteries on a college campus with supremely cool monster designs and great art. The monsters: So cool. I also really like the attention to fashion details on the characters--you can tell a lot about each of them by how they present themselves. Demon Street by Aliza Layne - All-ages fantasy adventure starring queer kids with magic powers! Great use of vivid, saturated color to set otherworldly scenes. Excellent queerification of folkloric tropes.

False Edge by M. R. Shaw - Just started, but a long-awaited comics debut with fantastic art. Features adorable big-cat shapeshifters. Warning, it’s supposed to get nasty (there’s an advisory page with specifics when you start). Feast for a King by Kosmicdream - I just started this (”just started” = 300+ pages in) but HOLY CROW it’s one of the most bizarrely creative comics I’ve seen. Warning for like, unrelenting gore/body horror (and eventually monster sex I think?) Gotta admire the scope of this one. Galanthus by Ashanti Fortson - [coming soon] Goodbye to Halos by Valerie Halla - Fantasy/action-adventure with an all queer-and-trans cast! Huge-scale, trans-dimensional cosmic plot stuff. The art is supremely cute and the color design is fantastic. Harlowe Vanished by Amy King - A lonely teenage girl accidentally finds herself in some kind of oceanic fantasy world! Scary military stuff is going down! BEAUTIFUL scenic art and a colorful cast that we’re currently just getting to know. The latest from Amy, who did The Muse Mentor, rec’d above. Heirs of the Veil by Phineas Kaldinski and Jassy Klier - Urban fantasy with lots of cool magic, a queer cast, and amazingly detailed environments that feel lived-in and full of history. Can’t wait to see where it’s going. Hilga from Below by Val Wise - This just started but that means I’m COMPLETELY CAUGHT UP on the  archive and so far I can tell that it has: Excellent colors, a cute dog person, a fallen angel or alien or something, and some really unsettling stuff lurking under the surface. How to be a Werewolf by Shawn Lenore - Another one I just started, but really enjoying it so far. After twenty years of isolated lycanthropy, an urban werewolf is mentored by the first of her kind she’s ever met, amidst a mysterious lurking threat to their kind. Kidd Commander by Aria Bell - This is the most fun I’ve had reading a webcomic in a long time. Kidd Commander is an epic shonen-style adventure with an immensely likable cast. Seriously, I love every last one of the characters, and their perils and triumphs and misunderstandings hit me right in the emotions like a ton of bricks. I’m probably gonna cry at some point in this comic. I KNOW I’m gonna cry at some point in this comic. But it’s also hilarious, with really well-timed comedy beats and expertly deployed reaction faces. The world also feels HUGE and full of interesting lore. This is just one of those ones where you can tell it’s an absolute labor of love and the creator enjoys every minute of making it. I could gush about KC forever. But I won’t. This time. I’M DONE. Kids These Days by Noora Heikkilä - Fresh webcomic from the creator of Judecca and Letters for Lucardo, which, if you’ve read either YOU’RE FREAKING OUT TOO, RIGHT. It’s about a group of young adults in the eighteenth-century-flavored city of Osk, refusing to fit the molds society has created for them. And it’s already great. Killjoys by Woods - Criminal mayhem set in a squishy cartoon circus toyland. Had me at “Fluffy hot-tempered clown bunny with they pronouns, in a suit.” Something about this one speaks directly to my id. Kill Six Billion Demons by Tom Parkinson-Morgan - SPRAWLINGLY EPIC action-adventure in hell with vast-scale environments that will make you fall to your knees weeping. Also, like everyone in it is super hot and also a monster or some kind of divine construct. Violence. Lots of that. Larkspur by Grace Mulcahy - Post-apocalyptic action/crime/comedy piece centering on girl gang rivalries. Everyone is some kind of really cool-looking post-radiation mutant. Lush, vibrant colors set against dark comedy. Warning for some sex trafficking stuff at the start (not explicit) and general CRIME/VIOLENCE. Log Date by H. Kasof - [coming soon]

Monster’s Garden by Ash G. - Urban sci-fantasy about a misunderstood prizefighter (who happens to be a lizard-man) who just wants to be left in peace--but is suddenly faced with the challenge of caring about others and having them care about him. Full of cute and sympathetic characters. Monster Pop! by Maya Kern- Light and fun college dramedy with a cast of colorful monsters (and some humans), including a cyclops, gorgon, and witch. The art is super cute. Queer and trans characters! Never Satisfied by Taylor Robin - A group of flawed, complicated teens compete for a prestigious role that is basically something like State Wizard. The characters are SO GOOD, sympathetic across the board even when they’re being misguided jerks, and the comedy highs and dramatic lows are equally prime. The main character is nonbinary and they are my sweet, emotionally stunted child. Oglaf by Trudy Cooper and Doug Bayne - Everyone’s favorite bizarro-comedy-porn medieval fantasy comic. NSFW, as if I had to tell ya. Parhelion by R. Smith - Sci-fi adventure featuring a huge and hugely-gender-various (and queer) cast with a lot of choice trope subversions. The writing is super witty and I find myself laughing out loud a lot. Puu by Ashkay B. Varaham - An own-voices slice-of-life webcomic about gay/trans roommates and the people connected to them, set in India. Look, I am a huge goopy romantic and this comic has EVERYTHING that feeds my soul. The Sea in You by Jessi Sheron - Lonely, environmentally-conscious goth girl with a jerk boyfriend makes the acquaintance of a MUCH BETTER (girl?)friend in the shape of a mermaid. Another one with very cute art and an interesting, creative mermaid design. Everything teen me ever wanted in a comic. Warning for the boyfriend being an emotionally abusive jerk. String Theory by Dirk Grundy- Probably the comic I’ve been reading the longest. Sci-fi/post-apocalyptic/alternate history/crime stuff centering around morally sketchy characters on their path(s) to super villainy. The art is frigging phenomenal and the comic has been going for like, ten years so if you wanna see some art evolution, check it out. Laurence is my fave. Superpose by Kieran and Han - [coming soon] Unconvent by Emil N. Tót - Romantic historical fiction about queer nuns in eighteenth century Brazil! I like how simple and straightforward this comic is. We are promised happy endings. (Update: Unconvent is now on indefinite hiatus but the author has started a new comic, Dead Scholars’ Whispers) That’s it for now! Fanfic MST: ITS MY LIFE!, a Portal fanfic [part 12]

Oh yes, friends, it’s back! It’s been entirely too long (two years too long, to be exact) and I hope you’re all ready for some more vaguely Portal-flavored nonsense. 

No real warnings for this chapter, just typical MarissaTheWriter ridiculousness. And canon character death, maybe, depending on whether or not you take the events of this chapter at face value (and, if I remember this story correctly, you probably shouldn’t).

Recap: Chell and GLaDOS have fused into one entity, P-body is pregnant, and Marissa for some reason decided that Rattman is the only one who can prevent disaster even though dude is strictly a non-action guy. She located him and now the two of them are planning on taking down the Chell/GLaDOS fusion.

I dunno who Sephral is, but “the buziness guy” is user ASBusinessMagnet (later a recurring character in MarissaTheWriter’s stories; I’m pretty sure we got married at one point), and “Cat Not Bouncy” is Tumblr user catbountry, who was going by “Not Cat Bountry” on Fanfiction dot net and who did a dramatic reading.

PS - I NO THAT GLADOS IS SPELLED GLADOS I CALLED HER FUSION CHELLGADOS BECOS CHELL ALREADY HAS THE LS AN IT SOUNDED MORE COOLER!

See, I told you she’d explain that. All makes sense now, right? Perfectly logical writing decision.

CHAPTER TWELF: THE FINAL BATTLE

Bit of a misnomer, since this is not, in fact, the final chapter.

(Actually, if I remember correctly, MarissaTheWriter may have been writing by the seat of her pants; it’s possible she initially intended this as the True and Honest Final Battle.)

Ratman an I were goin thru the air ducks to get to CHELLGADOSs layer were the final show down wold be. 

Oh my god, she means her lair, not her layer. That literally took me years to figure out. Holy fuck.

Wheatly was growlin an tryin to be scarry becos he didant have weapons so he was lick are cheer leader. 

Considering what happens when Wheatley actually tries to be the bad guy, I think this is preferable.

We intered the layer an saw CHELLGADOS buildin turrents but these ones was speshal becos they cold walk a round an shoot an stuff! 

Hey, I played Portal 2, I saw the turret assembly line. It’s pretty much autonomous. She doesn’t have to build them herself, and honestly I think she’d find it beneath her.

But maybe things have changed since I left the building.

"INTURDER!" One of the turrents called to CHELLGADOS. CHELLGADOS looked at me with all the angry she ever had.

That’s a phenomenal amount of anger. Surprised Marissa didn’t combust on the spot.

"Marrissa Roberts you have interfeared with my plans for the last time becos now I will kill you." 

All right! Time for some murder!

Then she seed Ratman an got more angry. "RATMAN IS A LIFE? NOW YOU WILL BOTH DYE!" 

I doubt she cares about killing Rattman, considering that she didn’t do so before and that he poses basically no threat on his own. Like I said… non-action guy.

CHELLGADOS taked out her portal gun wich was modified to shoot bullets lick a reel gun but cold shoot portals to just in case. 

Okay, but does it really shoot bullets? I ask because the turrets use spring-loaded action in order to fire the entire bullet, which is obviously a hell of a lot less effective despite delivering more bullet per bullet. Explains why Chell can take so many hits without dying.

Point being, there’s no evidence Aperture Science knows how guns are supposed to work.

She fired the portal gun an it hit Ratman with a boom an I thot he was dead for sure.

But Ratman gotted up! 

What? Is he still alive?

"Silly CHELLGADOS you cannt hurt me becos..." He pulled down his pants an I saw that he had replased his man thingys with... the space an rick cores! 

…I know we’re leading up to a “balls of steel” joke, and I shan’t comment on that, but this raises so many goddamn questions. How do you replace your testicles with personality cores? A personality core is a hell of a lot bigger, and heavier, than a human testicle. Also, Space Core is in space, so how did Rattman get ahold of him? Did he shrink the cores somehow? How did this make him immune to bullets? How did he fit two personality cores in his pants? Why did he need to flash everybody?

My brain is hurting over this and I know it’s only in the story because the author wanted to make a stupid pun. Moving the hell on.

"IVE GOT BALLS OF STEEL!" (Thats from a game called Duke Nukum Forever its funny) The space core was still thing he was in space but Rick was mad at been one off Ratmans tentacles. 

One of his tentacles? Are we in a hentai now?

"Well then ill just portal you into space like Wheatly an see how you like it you wont!" CHELLGADOS shooted a nother portal unner Ratmans feet an he was sucked into s space. "No dont you are my dotter Chell!" Ratman yelled as he got sucked in.

Uh… what? How? I thought Marissa and Chell were both Cave and Caroline’s kids in this story. Wasn’t that established several chapters ago?

"OMG HOW?" CHELLGADOS an me said at the same time to gether. "It all storted a long time ago..." Ratman gave us the down lo as he was just barely hanging on to the portal. "I used to work for Gabe Jonson affer he changed his name to Cave in onor of his dead brother. Caroline was got shot as you no Marrissa an was put in a robot body that was called... GLaDOS!" 

Right, we know. How is he hanging on to the portal? Can you do that? I don’t think you can do that.

CHELLGADOS o-mouthed at his shockin words. 

Did she forget she spent the beginning of this story being a goth emo over the revelation that she used to be human? Like… this isn’t news anymore.

"Gabe new he wold have to dotters named Marrissa an Chell but since GLaDOS was a prototip she an Cave coldnt make baby normal way an instead used the artificial enseamanation an grew test toob babys. 

Hey, what the fuck is the “normal way” to have sex with a giant robot? Seriously, please inbox me if you know. It’s for a friend. I swear.

But there was a miksup an my dna got used instead of Gabes for one of the toobs that toob was... CHELL!" Then Rutman coldnt hold on any longer an fell into space an died.

Why did Aperture Science have a sperm sample from Rattman on file? How did they get DNA from Caroline, since her physical human body no longer exists? How does Rattman know about the mixup? Who carried the baby to term? How did two white people birth a woman of color? How did two white people birth a woman of color? I don’t know if I brought this up earlier in the MST, but I am directing that question at every “Chell is Cave and Caroline’s daughter” theorist too. You’re not off the fucking hook.

Then CHELLGADOS started shackin an looked funny. Chell was fightin back a gainst GLaDOSs control! "Marrissa there is not much time left you must kill me to stopped GLaDOS once and four all!" 

Okay, but we know what happens when Marissa kills Chell — thanks to having consumed the “zombie taters,” Chell will just turn into a zombie. You don’t want the most tenacious woman in the world after your brains, but especially not when she’s fused with the most massive collection of wisdom to ever exist, who also hates you.

I o-mouthed becos Chells brane damage was cured so now I coldnt put her out of MISERY lol. 

That’s actually not the concern I expected Marissa to have. She has no problem killing disabled people, but being fused with a homicidal AI who is using your body as her puppet is A-OK, even when the victim is begging for death?

Man, this girl could use some new priorities.

"But I cannt kill you Chell yur my sister there must be a nother way! Chell got sad "Hurry GLaDOS is takin control!" An she started lollin with evil. There was no way I cold kill Chell an then I rembered that GLaDOS used to be Carlion an that made me not want to kill herr neither.

I guess that’s reasonable. I, too, feel indebted to those who give me drugs and beer.

Co-op mode would benefit from the inclusion of this feature, I think.

I know, it’s shocking! When I say it didn't sell out, I mean it really DID NOT sell out. There were large swathes of empty seats, even in the 'cheap' seats (spoiler: there were no cheap seats). It was fuller on the first night with EXO, but even then it sold less in total than G-Dragon at the same venue, who in turn sold less than BTS... Diminishing returns, tbh. Local fans aren't endless streams of money and maybe promotors will start to see that.

That said YES I would put down money immediately to go to see Twice! I agree, they could totally do it. Even if they just wanted to test the waters and do a smaller sized tour, like say GOT7-sized venues. That would be awesome.

Vicki: Hey, let’s do some flipping awesome science with Marc Seigel @DaretoChem

So, Marc, first of all, in your bio, you talk about being Johnny Crayons.

Marc: Yeah…

Vicki: What is that?

Who is Johnny Crayons?

Marc: So Johnny Crayons came a couple years ago.

A friend of mine, we were teaching together. We’re both very nontraditional teachers.

And across the hall from us was a very traditional teacher, one of those guys who — I mean, a phenomenal educator — but he stood behind a podium. That’s where the bell rang. That’s where he was the whole block.

And one day, he walks over across the hall to my friend, and says to him, “I don’t know what’s going on with all this Johnny Crayons noise stuff, but you gotta keep it down around here.”

And we just laughed hysterically.

We kind of take this — the Johnny Crayons — the nontraditional, the energetic, the full energy in the classroom.

I kind of describe it like this. There was a meme a couple of years ago about this little elementary kid. And he’s got this crayon gripped in his fist. He’s scribbling furiously at this picture. His eyes are wide. His teeth are clenched.

And I said,”That’s the Johnny Crayons. When you attack a project, when you attack an assignment so voraciously that you’re putting all of your energy and passion into it? That’s a Johnny Crayons, and I want nothing but them in my classroom.”

What does your science classroom look like on a great day?

Vicki: OK. What does a classroom day look like when you have an awesome engaging day. Describe what that would look like in your science classroom.

Marc: So I run a flipped classroom. My students work asynchronously.

So I give them all of the information and materials they need for an entire unit, and then I let them run and play with the different activities, depending upon where they are, their abilities, and how well they’re grabbing onto the concepts.

Kind of think of it like a whole bunch of stations all over the classroom, where some kids are working independently, some kids are working collaboratively with someone else that they’re friends with or they’re working well with.

Some kids are doing labs.

Some kids are working one-on-one or in small group settings with me as a teacher.

And when I’m not working with one kid, I’m floating around like a butterfly all over the classroom, trying to get to every group, trying to check in with students at all times.

So it’s kind of like a chaos of like a whirlwind of learning going on in my classroom at any given moment.

Can you give us an example?

Vicki: So give a science concept that you’d be teaching. And what the different kids would be doing, so we would kind of have a way to envision this.

It does sound like chaos! (laughs)

Marc: Absolutely. Yeah.

So, for example, I was a chemistry teacher and I taught a section on gas laws.

Gas laws talk about how gases behave and then different things happen to them. You change the pressure, you change the temperature, whatever it’s going to be.

And some cases, I might have, you know, a couple students working off on the side with some digital probes. They’re moving syringes in and out into a pressure center. And all of that information is being graphed onto a computer as an inquiry part of the assignment, too.

So as they pull out the syringe or push on the syringe, they’re changing the volume of that gas, and then the computer is measuring all the pressure.

So I’ve got a Chromebook set up. Kids are graphing all the information with Google Sheet.

On another section, I’ll have students on personalized whiteboards, and those whiteboards ar 16”x24” and wrapped in neon duct tape. So I’ll have students working on quiz questions or homework questions that I’ve got placed at my desk.

I don’t give traditional homework. Anything the students work on at home typically is like lab questions that they didn’t complete during class.

So these kids are working here in my classroom because when they struggle, I want me to be around to help them through whatever struggles they’re having.

I might have another group of students working off on the side watching some instructional videos off my YouTube channel.

So, it depends on where you are in the classroom, depending on what’s going on.

I might have kids sitting on a lab bench over on one side. I used to have a girl who used to like to hide under the lab bench.

Vicki: (laughs)

Marc: She kind of made her own little cubbyhole. She was a little bit of an introvert, and the chaos of the room didn’t lend itself for her to be focused. So she would tuck herself underneath, and that’s where she would stay for the whole block.

How difficult is this to organize?

Vicki: So Marc, how hard is this to plan and set up?

Marc: This takes years. Of doing it…

Vicki: Ohhh. But no. Now nobody’s going to want to do it! (laughs)

Marc: No, actually I was just talking with a group of teachers this week at a conference. I said,”What a lot of people forget when they read about a flipped classroom, they’re seeing it from people who have been doing it for several years. And they get overwhelmed.”

And they say, “Well, I can’t do that!”

And I’m like, “No, you can’t. Because I’ve done this over seven years. So the best thing to do is start small. Start with something you know and you are confident with.

My very first flipped lesson was in the easiest unit of the entire year. I planned it all out.

I actually storyboard everything at home. I have a big whiteboard at home.

I lay out all the topics, and I link them to where my videos are going to go with arrows, and then I connect the assignments into them.

By making it visual in front of me, it helped give me a nice, neat plan for my students. I give them an assignment chart which helps keep them organized throughout the entire unit as well.

Vicki: So you’re one of the authors of Flipping 2.0. You have a chapter in there.

Now, so are you more of the end-flip? So when they’re watching your videos, it’s in class? It’s not at home?

Which kind of flipped classroom do you run?

Marc: Mine is both. I leave it up to the students as to how they want to do it. So there are some students who are very active in athletics, they have a part-time job, they’re doing a ton of things at home, or maybe even internet access is limited. So I never wanted to force my students to always do the videos at home. So I leave them the option.

One year I had these five boys who used to get together on the weekend and watch all the videos for the entire unit in one afternoon. And they’d come to class on Monday with all their questions ready. They’d pound out all the assignments over the course of five days. They’d take the test on Friday, or maybe on the following Monday. And they were done. And that’s the way they liked it.

I had other students who would come to class, walk in, pull out their device, watch the first video, do a quiz or do the homework assigned to that video. And watch the second video, and they had that kind of routine.

So I let the kids be flexible in how THEY structure the class.

Vicki: OK, if you could spare beginning science flippers one mistake, what would it be?

What mistakes do people make when they begin?

Marc: Oh, relying on the video too much.

My very first massive fail was that I gave an assignment to watch the video for homework. And then my lesson was entirely based on the students’ notes from that video.

There were 21 kids in the class. But only 5 kids actually watched the video.

And I went, “Oh my gosh! What do I do now?”

So now that’s like Rookie Mistake #1 about flipping. That’s what you do your first year teaching. It’s like you put all of your emphasis is on the kids doing the homework — and then they didn’t do the homework.

Vicki: Yeah.

Marc: So I ended up having to reteach the entire lesson that I had put in the video via lecture. Because that’s the best way that I could get the information across.

So those 5 kids who did the video? Now sat bored for 30 minutes, while I’m going through a lesson.

Vicki: Hmmmm.

Marc: My video was only 10 minutes. But it takes that much longer in a lecture.

So the best thing you can do is — to learn from my failure — the next time I did that? When the same thing happened to me?

What I did was I brought the five kids up who did their assignment. I brought them up to the front of the room.

I sent the other 16 kids to the back to watch the video.

I then gave special extra reinforcement to those kids — sort of as a reward to those kids for watching the video.

So I hit them with extra problems, extra questions, and they got small group learning with me.

At that point everyone was done with the video, and then we came together as a whole group and did a large group activity.

So the kids who didn’t do their homework still got the information that they were supposed to get. But they didn’t get the extra reinforcement that they would have, had they done the homework. And that really changed how my class functioned.

Vicki: OK, if you could have one thing that every teacher could do RIGHT, right out of the gate, what would it be?

Marc: With a flipped classroom?

Vicki: Yeah.

What advice do you have?

Marc: Remember that it’s about maximizing your face-to-face time with your students.

So it doesn’t matter if you use videos or document-based questions, or reading passages or anything. It doesn’t matter what you use.

It’s about — when you sit down and think about that lesson — are you maximizing more face-to-face time with your students?

If the most effective thing you are doing is hands-on learning and small group work, then make sure your lessons look like that in the classroom.

If you’re a phenomenal educator and you can stand up and lecture, and kids are engaged and it’s amazing and they get it?

Then do THAT.

Like you have to make your class your space.

Don’t look at articles from Jon Bergman or Aaron Sams or anyone else.

We had a fascinating Socratic discussion and that’s the way we did it.

So it doesn’t have to always be the same.

Use those videos in a way that really accents your learning.
