i shouldnt force this but what do you think abt kakugos whole rising sun reclaiming situation
hmm to be honest.. if it's from the heisei manga. to begin with, it's a ridiculously senseless manga all down to quality. on one hand you got the guy that goes on and on about violence and revenge is always the answer and a count- i mean someone without weapons is weak and prone to be abused by the Every Other and like a woman while a conspicuous rising sun waves behind him fighting the both iron-cross-wearing punk ultra masculine violent misogynistic Other thats also the degenate kink leather-wearing queer (in the slur way) Other. and for some reason im supposed to get any productive synthesis out of that conflict. and like, at some point it gets all so bold, and having read KnS first, i could only imagine as i read that it must be some kind of conclusion or twist or literally anything at the end. and it then it just ends on a random mid-fight scene.
again, having read KnS first, thats not only yk Finished but that also basically negates basically most of the plot and elements of it, in comparisson heisei not only seems but ultimately revealed as even more amateur, unripe, weak structured, unfinished, thoughtless and useless of a read. furthermore, as i understand from yamaguchi works even beyond KnS, that's still one of his earlier less polished works, his works seem to deconstruct (though i didnt say how successfully) at least from his own experience those value systems, dunno if to his own work specifically tho, if at least from a their media legacy/influence level. but that's an idea i got from that essay i rbd a while ago, idk maybe his manga abt the toku fan one is shit and takes down everything i just said, idk since i havent read it. i look forward to know how he executes shigurui and such, a the toku fan one too, to confirm first hand in time. even if yamaguchi didnt change his stance it's just Weird. Red Flag. but also i don't get the fucking point of it.
deviation aside, if you meant from kakugo no susume, tbh i dont remember if the rising sun thing got assigned to kakugo at x or y, if any, moment; memory fails me. but the military uniform, for ex, to start with is a fair thing to point out to begin with. yes, kakugo is The Good Guy thats categorically opossed to resembling his g.grandfather or his ideologies, yet wears a hs uniform alike to the military japanese imperial one. but focusing on only kakugo is kinda missing the wider landscape. i mean the manga is riddled with that kind of contradiction, and to pick on one is to pick on many others. now, i wouldnt consider KnS any like Mature internal dialogue of fascism or anything, despite at least the textual reprehension for the imperial mindset and material effects/atrocities. the authors themselves admit is kind of a dumb series not precisely unintentionally, and again not the most polished work of yamaguchi, if you wanted to get a thorough and concise conclusion on anything. even if you tried the story wont help you on it lol, thats the thing with questionable quality writng.

Hi. Some ss shippers claim that Sakura wanted to die with Sasuke when she tried to kill him. They think so bc when Sakura confessed the second time, she said that they couldn't stab each other. You know japanese so I decided to ask you: Are they right?
Does it really matter what Sakura was thinking? We all know that she has an unhealthy obsession with Sasuke, whether that shows up in the Japanese or English version.
As for Sasuke not being able to stab Sakura, his intent absolutely was to kill her. Both times.
While there's no internal monologue on Sasuke's side, you can still see by his footwork in these 3 panels that he was in the proper stance to strike her with his chidori:
Tumblr media
NOTE: Karin says "…やめろ サスケェ…" which just means "Stop, Sasuke..."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only reason he fails is because Kakashi grabs his wrist and redirects the momentum of his strike. His feet are still pointed in Sakura's direction, barely twisted from Kakashi's intervention.
Kakashi also says as much here:
Tumblr media
Text: 本気の殺意…
Romaji: Honki no satsui...
Official Translation: He really meant to kill her...
My Translation: He really intended to kill her...
NOTE: "本気/honki" means "seriousness, truth, earnestness, etc" - with the "の/no" particle, it modifies (and amplifies) the verb "殺意/satsui" which means "intent to kill, intent to murder, urge to kill, murderous impulse" - so here Kakashi didn't just throw around a common word like "殺す/korosu", he used a specific word that means Sasuke had every intention of killing Sakura.
Even when Sasuke is talking to Kakashi, you can tell from his language that he has nothing except murder on his mind:
Tumblr media
Text: オレをいつでも殺せるみたいな言い方だな‼
Romaji: Ore o itsu demo koroseru mitaina iikatada na‼
Official Translation:
My Translation: You say that like you can kill me at any time!!
Text: いつまでも先生面すんじゃねーよ…
Romaji: Itsu made mo sensei mensu nja ne~ yo…
Official Translation:
My Translation: Don't act like you're still my teacher...
NOTE: "面/men" means to wear a certain face or mask, to have airs of a certain sort. In this case, to act like a teacher to him (after all the time that has passed)
Text: オレはアンタを殺したいとウズウズしてるぜ…カカシ
Romaji: Ore wa anta o koroshitai to uzūzushiteru ze… kakashi
Official Translation:
My Translation: I'm itching to kill you... Kakashi
NOTE: "ウズウズ/uzuuzu" literally means "itching to do something/impatient/sorely tempted/eager" so he's even telling them how murderous he is at the moment.
Even when Sakura tries again, she hesitates:
Tumblr media
Text: …覚悟 ……したハズなのに…‼
Romaji: … Kakugo…… shita hazunanoni…‼
Official Translation: ...I thought... ...I had made up my mind...!!
My Translation: ...I thought... ...I had prepared (myself)...!!
Sasuke shows no hesitation whatsoever - and Kishimoto makes this clear by drawing every step Sasuke takes:
Tumblr media
He turns, grabs her
Tumblr media
He chokes her
Tumblr media
Steals her kunai
Tumblr media
Swings his arm back
Tumblr media
Follows through with his strike (which looks like he was going to slit her throat, to be honest).
Tumblr media
Kishimoto even draws the slash mark Sasuke made on Naruto's cheek. This shows that the kunai was in motion to slice.
Had Naruto not grabbed her in time, Sasuke absolutely, without a doubt, would have killed her.
I don't know what SS fandom is pointing at to suggest Sasuke hesitated when he tried to kill her, not once, but twice. All the evidence points to Sasuke not giving a shit about Sakura and finding her as indisposable as he saw Karin.

I just realized this, someone else may have already said this but the ace attorney titles are so interesting to compare in English and Japanese.
In the US at least, it's called Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney but in Japan it's Gyakuten Saiban (逆転裁判/"Turnabout Trial" or "Reverse Trial" translated literally?). But then The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles are called Dai Gyakuten Saiban 1&2 -Naruhodō Ryūnosuke no Bōken to Kakugo- (大逆転裁判1&2 -成歩堂龍ノ介の冒險と覺悟-). As in The Great Ace Attorney 1&2 Ryuunosuke Naruhodou's Adventures and Resolve.
As in they added the name of the protagonist like the localization to further differentiate the serieses like they've never done before. Miles Edgeworth Ace Attorney Investigations is Gyakuten Kenji (逆転検事/literally Turnabout Prosecutor) and Apollo Justice is just Gyakuten Saiban 4. And then Capcom did the reverse in English making it only The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles. Separating them just as Adventures and Resolve.
Also also i just realized the compilation of the OG trilogy is Gyakuten Saiban 123: Naruhodō Serekushon (Selection), (逆転裁判123成歩堂セレクション) in Japanese. Maybe so Capcom do this to align more with international localization names bc of Naruhodou name.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Note: They can have different names depends on the region and language.
Note note: I DO NOT KNOW JAPANESE nor anything about the Japanese fandom so take this just as silly murmurs. Plz anyone who does know japanese and about the Japanese fandom plz feel free to share or correct this post. Or any fun fact about the names from your region.

EN vs JP: Book 1
Tumblr media
Original Option 1: Ehhhh!
EN Option 1: Please! I don't have dental insurance!
Original Option 2: He's going to punch me--!!
EN Option 2: I can't afford to pay anything!
Tumblr media
Original Deuce: You don’t get to decide whether it’s “a big deal” or not!
EN Deuce: You don't get to call my eggs stupid. You don't get to call ANY eggs stupid!
Tumblr media
Original Delinquent B: "Bwah! Let's get outta here! I'm sorry, chickeeens!"
EN Delinquent B: "Bwah! L-let's get outta here!"
Tumblr media
The line, "His signature spell is a weapon" was added to Trey's dialogue.
Tumblr media
The word "yobisute" does not seem to exist in English, so it makes sense that this line was changed for EN.
Deuce is originally saying that refused to use "-sensei" with his teachers before NRC. This is why he strictly insists on referring to all his upperclassmen as "last-name-senpai" (in the original game).
Tumblr media
Trey and Riddle's history together was rewritten for EN.
As a result, Trey's reasoning for why he refuses to interfere with Riddle was also changed in Book 1.
Original Trey: I just can't scold him.
EN Trey: I don't think the situation calls for it.
Tumblr media
Original Deuce: "Does he intend to come at us with entire trees!?
EN Deuce: (removed)
Tumblr media
Original Riddle: Why are playing cards the only think I can produce!
EN Riddle: (removed)
Tumblr media
Original Grim: It's like he's become completely villainous!
EN Grim: (removed)
Tumblr media
Trey's unique magic (like that of all the character) is made up of two parts: the part that is spoken aloud and can be heard in the audio, and a "hidden meaning" that we see written down, but no one pronounces aloud (more here).
This "hidden meaning" behind the characters' unique magic is, for the most part, not being reflected on EN, but Trey is unique: EN used the meaning of his spell instead of the audio, so making it look as though what he is saying aloud does not match to his actual dialogue.
Tumblr media
This may have led to some confusion on EN. During the overblot battle Trey uses his unique spell in the original game, but on EN he says "Sleight of Hand;" a spell we had never seen before and has never come up again.
Tumblr media
In the original game Riddle’s mother leaves Child-Riddle alone for one hour every day so that she can accomplish an unspecified task.
In the English adaptation this line was rewritten to say that she is preparing lesson materials for Riddle.
If Riddle’s mother were really preparing lesson materials in the original game it could have been specified. But it was not, instead being left intentionally vague in the original game, the manga and the novel.
The only version of the story where Riddle’s mother prepares lesson materials for one hour every day is the English adaptation of the game.
Tumblr media
Towards the end of Book 1, Trey and Cater have a conversation about how Trey had realized on his own that Cater has been hiding his dislike of sweet foods, but chose not to say anything about it.
Cater reprimands him with, “Your whole, not saying what you think thing is really not good."
On EN this was changed to Cater reprimanding himself, instead.
Tumblr media
Leona’s “Be prepared” line was removed from the end of Book 1.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was also removed from Books 2 and 3, but retained in Book 6.
Tumblr media
For the curious, the word that Scar actually says in the animated lion king is, junbi, which was replaced by the word kakugo in the stage musical adaptation.
Tumblr media
Of the two, kakugo seems like the more accurate translation, and it is also the word used by Leona.

Third request! This song is pretty fun, while also diving deep into the boys’ past with Jack-ojisan. I really love the latter part of the song, especially with the lovely harmonization of Shogo, Hide and Ikkei. The best part for me is the final “you ni” ~ It’s so good!!!

Then, why is it, Master?
If I let “Jack the Ripper”’s reputation spread through the world as is People will think I’m someone who kills helpless prostitutes If I try to close this case myself, I doubt it’ll die down That’s the end of it! So I have to clear my name.[1]
Says London’s #1 lady-killer
Jack: Lady? Right, a lady! I heard you’re housing a pretty lady named “Irene Adler” here? Bond: Ah, that seems to be me!
Irene Adler is dead. I’m now Bond. James Bond.
Jack: I see! What a handsome man you are. Then you wouldn’t mind if I treated you like a man.
Would you like to do some evening training with me? What do you think? You up for it, Bond-kun?
Moran: Just how shameless are you... Bond: Uh... Training? Louis: The three of us were taken in by the Rockwell estate after the incident. And that estate’s butler was Jack-sensei. Bond: I see.
I can still remember that day. You three, still young, approached me You saw through all my secrets That I was an ex-soldier, “Jack the Ripper”
And with these young boys’ cold eyes You begged to me
Ah, please We want to be able to survive by ourselves Please teach us how to protect ourselves Please teach us self-defense
I quickly felt their resolve Within their frozen eyes was an ever-blazing blue flame I decided to teach them what they want, self-defense And to beat into their bodies the skills for murder
Let’s beat into [Jack the origin] these souls soaked in blood [Jack the origin] Let me, Jack the Ripper [Jack the origin] give you all my skills So that the world can be enveloped by your blue flames
Notes: [1a] 終活 - actually refers to preparing for death, but I couldn’t fit it in the context [1b] 立つ鳥跡を濁さず - a proverb. Literally “A bird does not foul the nest it is about to leave” which means “one must clean up after oneself”. So probs Jack-sensei’s pretty much just saying he has to clean up “Jack the Ripper”’s mess because it’s his name that’s at stake.

Top 10 Favorite Manga
I was bored today so decided to make a list of my top ten favorite manga, with little comments describing what’s great about them:
Apocalypse Zero by Takayuki Yamaguchi If you were scared off by the OVA… well, you might still hate the manga since it’s even more crazy and explicit. But the anime failed to capture most of what makes the manga so unforgettable, be it the deliberately over-the-top tone; charmingly grotesque characters; bizarre eroticism; or the stunning artwork. Plus Kakugo is the perfect man?!
Devilman by Go Nagai This has finally reached the mainstream so I don’t have to describe how influential it was/is. I consider it Nagai’s most put-together work, and where his art looked the best; rough but expressive and with lots of character (for that reason I recommend reading the original edition if you can, not the later ones with the stylistically jarring additions). Although to be honest, my true trashy Nagai pleasure is Cinderella Knight…
The Holy Terrors by Hagio Moto I’m not a huge Hagio Moto fan. I recognize her greatness, but most of her original work doesn’t really speak to me. Her adaption of Jean Cocteau’s novel, though, is some of the most magnificent comic work I’ve ever seen. Their unique styles meld to create something not quite Moto and not quite Cocteau... a dreamlike union.
Maison Ikkoku by Rumiko Takahashi This was a tough pick, since I like individual elements of other Takahashi works more (particularly Mermaid Saga and her short stories), but Maison Ikkoku is the one I find the most compulsively rereadable. It’s still so relatable, while also being such a charming snapshot of what everyday life was like in Japan during the 80s. The characters have foibles but aren’t stereotypes, not even Godai’s wacky neighbors (well, except for Yotsuya), and even the romance subverts her infamous will-they-or-won’t-they waffling by delivering a poignant payoff by the end.
Me-teru no Kimochi by Hiroya Oku I feel like I shouldn’t love this manga half as much as I do. Oku is a creator I have a lot of issues with normally. No matter how intriguing the initial setup, all of his long-term series tend to fall apart at the seams... but this three-volume manga manages to come together in a genuinely amusing and touching way. The last few pages make me emotional every time I read them.
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind by Hayao Miyazaki This seems like a cliche choice but, despite how popular Ghibli is in the West now, I feel like a lot of people are still sleeping on this manga. Since it isn’t primarily aimed at children, unlike his films, Miyazaki is able to add a lot more darkness and moral complexity to this apocalyptic war story; I was impressed when, by the end, even his saintly heroine was forced to get her hands dirty. The style is unique (inspired more by European comics than Japanese manga), the world building is fascinating and the entire cast has so much more depth (esp my girl Kushana). The last two volumes are absolutely staggering.
Ogre Slayer by Kei Kusunoki When Viz released the first two volumes of this manga when I was a kid, it was a shock to my system. Kusunoki lavishes as much detail on the terrifying ogres as she does her attractive main character, the nameless boy on a fruitless quest to become human by hunting his own kind. The juxtaposition of cathartically gruesome violence with the emotional, largely female-coded trauma the ogres represent is captivating. So although the series starts to lose steam toward the middle of its run, I still love it for the strength of its early installments.
Rose of Versailles by Riyoko Ikeda I feel guilty whenever I admit this, but most of the time I prefer the anime adaptions of shoujo manga (Fruits Basket, Kare Kano, Ouran Host Club, Please Save My Earth… this is even the case for one of Ikeda’s later works, Onii-sama e). But the Rose of Versailles anime doesn’t come close to matching the detail and grandeur of its source material imo. If you’ve only seen the series, please please make sure to read the manga as well, esp if you love Andre as much as I do… Dezaki did him (and by extension his romance with Oscar) dirty!
Twin Knights by Osamu Tezuka I wasn’t that enamored of Princess Knight, but this sequel captured my attention in a big way. It’s so imaginative and fun, has great supporting characters and features some of Tezuka’s most beautiful Disney-inspired panels. It also manages to avoid most of the dated gender essentialist stuff that made me roll my eyes so hard in the original, despite them both being from the 50s.
Violinist of Hameln by Michiaki Watanabe Where do I even start with this one? It’s honestly a mess, but the best kind of mess. A fantasy adventure about a hero that fights monsters with the magical music he plays on his jumbo-sized violin, the ping-ponging between cheesy humor, extreme tragedy and shonen manga power-leveling is disorienting at first, but you get used to it. The art is a bit amateur (and becomes increasingly abstract as the series goes on) but you can feel the enthusiasm the author has for his work jumping off the page. Plus, it’s jam-packed with classical music trivia!
I’m sure I’m forgetting some big ones but these are the first that come to mind. What are your favorites? Now that I basically have no work to do (orz) I’d love to read some new stuff. Off-kilter series in particular!

相思相愛 // Soushisouai // Mutual Love
Happy Valentine’s Day….NOT!!! It’s SINGLES AWARENESS DAY WOOOOOOO jkjk
Yeah, I’m out here ruining Valentines. Gomen. :)))
Ok, story time. I actually started translating this on the night that Satocchan announced his marriage (Nov. 22, 2019). Yes, I was that bitter. HAHAHA jk. Maybe bitter isn’t the right word, but more of shocked. I needed to channel the “frustration” into other things so I decided to translate this. I was actually able to complete translating this on the same night too but decided against publishing it because I know in myself that it wasn’t that good or that accurate yet.
So I took some time to edit. However, every time I get back to this document for editing, it becomes more painful. Not because I still can’t accept Satocchan’s marriage (HEY I’VE FULLY MOVED ON FROM IT OKAY I’M HAPPY HE’S SUCH A PROUD HUSBANDO ALWAYS FLEXING HIS RING :)))) ) but the song’s lyrics started to hit too close to home (aka it’s starting to reflect what’s happening in my real life). I needed to step back and calm myself down every time because it’s becoming so emotionally heavy for me and I’d just start crying in the middle of editing. So yeah, this translation is one year (and almost a half) in the making. :))))
This may not be fully accurate but I do hope this will be helpful for you guys to understand the song’s message.
Special shoutout to Cita for helping me point out some inconsistencies and for providing such valuable feedback to further improve this translation. Those are really all appreciated so much aaaaa thank you thank you so much!! Totally didn’t ask for her help just because I know we both can relate to the song sksksks jk
Anyhoo, as usual, this translation might contain errors, inconsistencies, and mistakes. Feedback will be greatly appreciated especially since I’m still learning Japanese. ----

Ending things with just saying "goodbye" In order to be able to say "Ah, I see" Because the days and months went by so fast At least, this will be the end
"This love's not mutual" "There's no doubt that there's no love" It's fine to say that much, right? That was really unfair, so selfish    I can't believe this And I'm fully aware (of what I've done), aren't I?
If we love one another, everything will go smoothly for many years. However, (that love) has also disappeared It's precisely because we loved each other, that I purposely left something in her room I couldn't help it
If I could end things with just a simple, four-character "Goodbye"* (or with) "I'm sorry" - come to think of it, I feel like I could always start everything all over again
"This love's not mutual" "There's no doubt that there's no love" I still cannot fulfill what I promised Until the very end, (everything I do) it's still half-assed   I'm pathetic It's too painful - even though I know that, it still hurts
"This love's not mutual" "There's no doubt that there's no love"
"After everything, she'll no longer be here" "She's no longer mine" I'll miss you, it will be lonely…I can't take it I hurt you so much it's become unbearable, it's already the end I really really hope that you'll be happy. Mutual love…thank you, goodbye. Thank you, goodbye.
T/N *four-character "Sayonara" - because when written in Hiragana, Sayonara 「さよなら」has four characters. I also think that the line also connects to「ごめんな」that’s in the line directly after it since it also has 4 characters.

Note
How are the characters Tsukishima and Koito referred to each other?
Let’s see...
I hope I’m not missing anything as I hadn’t gotten around to check all the chapters in which they appear yet but normally Koito calls Tsukishima simply ‘Tsukishima’ (島) although often he slips into calling loudly 'Tsukishimaa' (月島ア/ 月島 あ) when he wants Tsukishima’s help/attention or when he’s complaining.
He doesn’t really use ‘you’ for Tsukishima often (but this is also due to how in Japanese one doesn’t use ‘you’ as much as they do in English, preferring to go for the name of the person you’re talking with), but when he does, he uses ‘omae’ (お前).
I think he used ‘Tsukishima gunsō’ (月島軍曹 “Sergeant Tsukishima”) to call him only in chap 231.
‘Watashi wa Tsurumi chūi-dono to Tsukishima gunsō o saigomade mitodokeru kakugo de iru’
私は鶴見中尉殿と月島軍曹を最後まで見届ける覚悟でいる
“I’m prepared to watch First Lieutenant Tsurumi and Sergeant Tsukishima to the end.”
Tumblr media
Tsukishima is usually much more formal with Koito, generally calling him ‘Koito shōi-dono’ (鯉登少尉殿 “Second Lieutenant Koito, sir”).
(’-dono’ 殿 it’s an honorific generally translated with “sir” in Golden Kamuy and which, back then, was used to talk with soldiers that had a rank higher than yours. To give you an idea Koito uses it for Tsurumi and first class privates used it with Ogata and Usami)
Occasionally, when he’s in a rush to warn Koito about something he shouldn’t do, he uses just ‘Koito shōi’ (鯉登少尉 “Second Lieutenant Koito”), like in chap 212.
‘Chikadzuku na Koito shōi!!’
近づくな鯉登少尉!!
“Stay away, Second Lieutenant Koito!!”
Tumblr media
(Japanese fans have also noticed in such circumstances Tsukishima can end up using verbal forms that are considered rude when used to someone older or higher in status... but I’m not really that knowledgeable I can tell when this happens... sorry about it)
The very few times he used “you” he uses ‘anata’ (あなた) which is much more formal than Koito’s  ‘omae’ (お前).
I thinks that’s all and I hope I hadn’t missed anything.
Thanks for your ask!

Hey? Maybe Melty? One-Two, Shall We Dance? Yeah give me a show. Come on and hand, in hand, don't hesitate, and just remember that until the end,
I want you to drown me in all your love.
Although you’re not at all interested in me I wonder if you really only love yourself (Yeah!) Totally, you’re not at all interested in me, but I’ve grown tired of that dumb fairytale. Really really, definitely you’re not at all interested in me, as the gambling cheater says… (More!) Get The Last Dance, are you ready for more? Kimagure Mercy ...how does it taste on your tongue?

SPOILERS FOR HOTARU’S "LOVER’S GUIDE” ES
Please note this is pretty in-depth so it’s a long post. Also note there may be some misunderstandings of the plot of quotes on my part. I am not fluent in Japanese, my level is probably only above N3.
This is some real cute fucking shit. So KAKUGO YOURSELF. TN: Kakugo means prepare
So this current ES theme is about deepening your love and all of them revolve around this guidebook which I’m assuming is Saizo’s Lover’s Guide but I can’t confirm since I don’t know the name of his book in Japanese.
So things start off with Hotaru and MC enjoying a morning together having fun and some light making out. MC is not really used to doing this sort of thing in the morning and gets a little embarrassed, telling Hotaru they have to get up to get ready for the day. She notes to herself she should probably tell Hotaru when it’s okay and not okay to do these sort of things because it leads to...THAT.
Later on in the day Kagetsugu, Yoshichi and Kageie are being noisy in the hall. MC wanders over to see them holding the Lover’s Guide and eventually Hotaru sneaks the book away to see what the fuss is about. MC naturally gets a little embarrassed because they somehow get on the topic of Hotaru’s love life and what they’ve done...while MC is right there. Things only get worse when Kenshin comes and decides to help Hotaru deepen his love for MC by helping them study. So they start trying out things from the book. For example first they introduce themselves and bless his poor little soul Hotaru keeps slipping up. Like he just says “Hotaru” instead of “My name is Hotaru” which is more polite. Then he has to compliment MC so he does what he always says “MC...ah no...MC-san, you’re very cute.” and Kageie’s like
Tumblr media
“That’s a bit...too childish” and everyone suggests “beautiful” instead.
Next they have to write letters to one another and have it sent to each other. Since MC and Hotaru share the same room, they agree to split up for the time being. MC will move to a new room, they won’t speak to each other or even see one another to ensure that they are following the book properly. Hotaru will learn how to write letters appropriately and MC will decide when they are ready to meet and move onto the next step.
MC moves out but Hotaru comes to her fucking room cause HE WAS WORRIED ABOUT HER EVEN THOUGH THEY’RE IN THE SAME CASTLE AWWWWWW. He delivers MC a letter and she says “You brought this yourself? Ah, you should have someone else send it instead.” So Hotaru realizes he forgot they weren’t supposed to meet and takes out a notepad and writes “Sorry” on it, like how he was at the beginning of his MS when he would never speak out loud. MC feels a little sad and tries to cheer him up by telling him “I’ll read your letter with the utmost care” *She says 大切にする so that means to treasure/cherish it. He starts to leave but as he does so, he keeps turning and looking back at MC sadly. Wahhhh
Not too long after he leaves Tora comes to visit MC AND THERE’S A LETTER TIED TO HIS LEG, OH MY GAAAAAWD SO CUTE. HOTARU SENT TORA WITH A LETTER IMMEDIATELY AFTER HE LEFT.
MC and Hotaru continue to exchange letters as the days pass. Their letters are sort of like “How are you feeling today? I’m doing fine but when you’re not here I get so lonely.”
Tumblr media
Now prepare your hearts cause it’s about to get real cute. It’s at night and MC sees a sudden shadow at her door. She guesses it’s Hotaru and wonders why he might be here since they can’t meet but his figure suddenly disappears. When she slides her door open she finds a flower with a letter waiting for her. In the note Hotaru writes “I saw this flower and thought of you. I hope it brings a smile to your face.”
Tumblr media
YOU BIG CUTIE YOU! I WOULD FUCKING DIE FOR YOU
MC decides it’s time to finish the letter exchange, Hotaru has passed and new they can finally meet. She sends a letter via Tora to Hotaru (who is training with Kageie, Kagetsugu and Yoshichi telling him to meet her later. HOTARU IS SO EXCITED HE STARTS RUSHING OFF TO MC’S ROOM. But everyone calls Hotaru, telling him to come back. Poor baby boy was so excited he forgot it said “Let’s meet at the tea house later” and he starts sulking.
Then it’s finally time for them to meet! Hotaru is already waiting for MC, he says the Lover’s Guide said it was a man’s duty to do the waiting. He also gives her a flower because the book said women are happy to get them. “I wanted to see your smile so I also brought you a flower today.”
MC gets a little lonely when she sees that Hotaru brought the guidebook since he starts referring to it and reading it from it. So their conversation becomes stiffened and a bit unnatural. Hotaru goes to place the order for food and tea and some creep comes sauntering over “Oh hey babe, you alone?”
“No, I’m with someone”
“Haaa? Are you really, even though you have such a sad and lonely expression. How about playing with me? Hmm, not saying a word? Well someone’s shy. What a cutie. I know some place more fun than this, let’s go.”
MC tries to refuse but ya you know...MEN, some can’t take a hint. Luckily Hotaru comes to save the day and sends the creep off. “She’s taken.”
MC is safe and Hotaru is relieved but is suddenly saddened. He forgot to follow the rules of the book. When saving a girl, check to see if a situation becomes dangerous, if you step in you’ll look cool (SAIZO YOU PIECE OF SHIT THAT’S HORRIBLE). He despondently says “I didn’t wait and see. I’m so lame.”
"No, don’t say that, Hotaru! You were amazing! In fact, I think men who just wait around and do nothing when someone’s in trouble are the lame ones! Not everything in that guide in true, you know!”
MC feels a pain in her chest when Hotaru asks if he’s made any other mistakes with her. The Hotaru she loves isn’t the one who is desperately following the book. It’s the one who is pure and good-hearted. This lover’s guide Hotaru simply isn’t him. She thanks Hotaru for what he’s done for her and apologizes for causing so much trouble and takes his hand in hers. Hotaru starts to blush. Voltage has blessed us with 3 blushing sprites of Hotaru
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
OH BOI THAT LAST ONE SAYS YOU ARE MINE AND NO ONE ELSE’S
Upon seeing Hotaru blush, MC starts blushing. It’s basically whenever MC and Yukkin get embarrassed and Saizo makes fun of them for being ripe apples. For awhile they don’t even say anything. The conversation literally goes
“.....”
“.....”
“.....”
“.....”
Hotaru then takes MC’s hand and places it on his chest. “My heart’s pounding...when you touch me, it starts beating even more. Does this mean our hearts are connected?” This is the result of their love deepening thanks to the guidebook. They’re grateful for the lover’s guide but MC and Hotaru decide to do love their way instead of relying on a book.
“I want to touch you more, is that okay?” Good for you, Hotaru. Constantly practicing consent.
“Ahh, only when we’re alone, just the two of us....also not in the morning”
“Oh...so MC prefers it when it’s dark.”
Oh Hotaru, my sweet summer child. He then starts asking MC embarrassing questions like “Does your heart also beat for me? What makes your heart race? When we hug? When we kiss?”
MC is super embarrassed but manages to avoid answering when two women gush about how cute they are and changes the topic wondering if Hotaru really ordered their tea.
Tumblr media
Later they return to the castle and Hotaru returns the book to Yoshichi. Everyone celebrates Hotaru’s success but fucking Hotaru says “Kenshin, MC won’t answer my question. Does her heart beat when we hug, when we kiss?”
MC’s mind (literally): WAAAWWAAAWAAAAAA!!!!!
Kenshin just smiles and says “Just by thinking of her her heart’s already pounding for you.” **Translation, not sure
SO HOTARU LITERALLY PRESSES HIS EAR AGAINST HER CHEST...IN FRONT OF EVERYONE “Ahhh, it’s true!” Goddamn someone please save MC.
After death by embarrassment, MC and Hotaru return back to “their” room and talking about their experience. How they were lonely without one another but they were glad for it. They start to get touchy-feely and start exchanging kisses.
Hotaru asks “Is your heart racing?”
“Yeah.”
“Mine too. I’m glad I got to fall in love with you all over again. I want your heart to race even more. I want us to be even closer.” The story ends with MC mentally noting that:
This loud, beating heart of mine has become even more so.
END.
Tumblr media
My rating of this ES out of 10: “I've only had Hotaru for a day and a half, but if anything happened to him, I would kill everyone in this room and then myself.”

Getting off the MysMe train - Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds opening song
With the disappointing V route and Ray being only slightly better, there was a big void left, so I started branching out into other otome games. I tried the two other Cheritz games, Dandelion and Nameless. Others have written longer, better reviews. I liked Nameless better but both were quite good.
So what does a girl do when there’s no more MysMe to be had? First I tried Midnight Cinderella from Vehura’s recommendation. It was okay, but I spent way too much money just making it through the story. However, it taught me to curb my spending, so now I am currently playing My Forged Wedding Party and have disciplined my spending on coins. It’s just frustrating to have to wait for the time to recharge the love passes or whatnot for those free-to-play games.
I didn’t mind, however, shelling out the money for Dandelion and Nameless, and not having to wait for the next chapter of the story except on my own time. I figured that someone else had probably created some pretty good otome games before these, so I googled the top ones. As luck would have it, Steam was having a sale on Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds and Edo Blossoms.
On to a new obsession! Others have also written better reviews of both these games, so I will not. I have played several routes, and because the game is based on historical events, they are starting to feel repetitive. Thank goodness for the skip button. I love the opening song Ruri no Sora e, but I can’t seem to find an English translation. Google Translate will only work on the kanji, not the romanized Japanese, so I had to take these lyrics and delete the romanized lines to get Google to translate the kanji.
Credit for the lyrics to Koigokoro, but I will reproduce them here to get the side-by-side (well, really, top-to-bottom) translation. Also did a bit of cleaning up with the English, but I unfortunately have no idea if it is at all accurate. :( Apologies to those who actually know Japanese!
I have to say: I love this song even more now that I get an inkling of what it means. The transient nature of cherry blossoms is so poetic and tragically beautiful. Just like life. #hanami

“I’ve come to get you.” “This is Nobunaga-sama’s order. Come together with me.”
Childhood friend from Iga Village, Fujibayashi Sakuya.
Tumblr media
Sakuya: “If you become an hindrance/obstacle to my duty, you are an enemy no matter who you are.”
Sakuya: “Even if it’s you...especially if you betray Nobunaga-sama.”
That another meeting, he has a cold eyes, different than the time when he was young.
- However... -
Tumblr media
(HE’S BLUSHING HERE - )
Sakuya: “The person who is needed/necessary to me is the one who could produce Ryuu Rui (Dragon Tears)...”
Sakuya: “It’s good even if the person is not you./It does not have to be you.”
Sakuya: “...At first, certainly that is what supposed to be, and yet...”
The look/gaze tinged with fever/heat directed only to you.
Tumblr media
Sakuya: “Because, you are...my first love.”
MC: “If it’s Gen-chan, you must know the reason for Saku-chan changes, don’t you?” (I think there’s been a name mistake here, it should be MC, not Sakuya.)
Genya: “In short, you fell in love with Saku, right?”
Two people feelings/thought who becomes adult begin to intertwined -
Tumblr media
MC: “...Tell me. Up until now, does all of Saku-chan was only a lie and fabrication?”
Sakuya: “For the sake of duties.”
Sakuya: “How many times I should have said this. Shinobi has no heart.”
Tumblr media
Even if you exchange blades with the person you love, you still need to accomplish your fate as a Shinobi.
Chibi Sakuya: “Let’s make a promise. Just like Mimi’s name, swear by this Mitsuba.”
Chibi Sakuya: “Always and forever, I will be Mimi’s friend.”
Tumblr media
Would you be able to regain back Sakuya’s tender and kind eyes, just like during the promise of those distant days?
Sakuya: “Are u prepared to live with me?”
^ (Oh, if you want to hear his voice when he said this line, it’s on the website OP, by the end of video - Ore to tomoniikiru kakugo wa aru ka)
Opening the path of love for the Shinobi with fate of living in the shadow,
