Saw A Minecraft Movie

It was ✨not good✨

((Thoughts below cut, minor spoilers))

The very beginning of the movie tricks you into thinking it will be good. The first few minutes is a retelling of how Steve became Steve. It's weird and unapologetically camp in a way that I wish the rest of the movie lived up to. This is the only part of the movie that felt like it had a vision. We don't get to see that vision, though, it's just teased for a few minutes and then for the rest of the run time we are stuck with some genuinely really cool props and an empty paper bag pretending to be a story. It's sad. A Minecraft Movie feels like a rushed sequel trying to recapture the magic of a cult classic that never existed.

The Technoblade easter egg was genuinely really sweet though, I'm happy they did that.

it's true that hermann's clothing aesthetic is mostly something along the lines of "dorky professor," but i think it's really more like 80% dorky professor, 20% military surplus. (that 20% is probably all ppdc gear, but the Aesthetic™ of the ppdc gear is milsurp).

like, hermann's a practical guy. he cares more about the function of his clothes than the appearance (see: glasses cord, oversized parka). he's also been working for the ppdc since he was in his mid-20s. you can't tell me he doesn't own, like, fleece quarter-zip tops in neutral colours and too-big "one size fits all" sweatpants with "P.P.D.C." stamped on the side.

eastenders tonight was PHENOMENAL

Syril's bedroom It's a small space, with odd angles, lit only for a few seconds by sunlight - but it's only a reflection from opposite larger buildings. Still, that is considered a luxury on Coruscant. It's not really a home, but a storage room for old memories, a dark hiding place, full of sooo many little secrets, hidden and locked behind small closet doors. The room seems tidy, but even his mother's cleaning doesn't change the fact that the walls are slowly turning yellow, like aging toys. The neatly lined up trooper figures are the only personal items Syril dares to put on display. Perhaps he enjoyed playing with them as a child, imagining himself a leader. But now they probably just remind him that playing soldier isn't as much fun when he's responsible for human lives. Being a leader isn't something one just turns on and off.

Bonus:

soooo originally I was just going to do a 3D rendering of Syril's mushroom lamp, and then I thought, ok, now I might as well try to recreate the wall with the window to use as a background.

But how do I even make a window with rounded corners??

Many Blender/Daz3D tutorials later, at 3am on a Monday morning, I ended up creating the whole bedroom...

...and had so much fun adding all the little buttons and lights and weird angles of the walls, that I just couldn't stop. Of course, I also had to include a bowl of cereal, a brown suit, Syril's "private box" and the Rotating-Blorbo-projector™.

I'm kinda proud because it's the first time I've ever created a whole room! A bit of improvisation was necessary, though, because you can't see all corners of the room in the show - so I went for the style of a Nakagin capsule tower apartment.

I was lucky enough to find some clone trooper armor that I scaled down to make Syril's cute little trooper figures.

I saw Barbie today and It’s fine, doesn’t live up to hype at all for me. Extremely hamfisted, shallow, babies first feminist message. Doesn’t seem to be interested in exploring anything deeper. The girl calls Barbie out when she first meets her for all the reductive views of women she represents and this never gets explored! The image of womanhood and femininity it represents is narrow and alienating for someone like me. White feminism basically.

IDK I guess it’s fine for preteens who are first being introduced to feminist thought, I probably would have liked it more at 11. But… can’t we do better than that now?
