WAD: Cover Art

dan is still working on selling the distribution rights for We're All Doomed! so i decided to make some DVD/Blu-ray disc jacket art!

this is my attempt at a traditional jacket design! none of the images used are mine, but i did create the concept and design:

as i was making the first one for myself, i was struck by the fact that 'well, it's for me, so it doesn't have to look like a stereotypical jacket cover' which led me to be more artsy in my approach for the next one:

i was really enjoying the creativity and space to explore, so i went looking for more inspiration for a third design. this led me to dan's favourite Muse album: Origin of Symmetry, which i paid homage to:

after the first Muse album, i looked at their catalogue to see if there was more inspiration there. i was just thankful dan's favourite was easy stylistically to mimic, unlike say, 2009's The Resistance...

General notes

i don't know how to use photoshop! i entirely brute-forced my way through the whole project, and the only tutorial i looked up was for the gradient text in the 4th cover

this wasn't even the original project i was working on! you'll eventually get to see that though

and this one also inspired art for the disc itself so stay tuned 👀

i will do anything for authenticity so these are Full of intentional details

matching fonts is a nightmare

took the longest, as it was the first.

the barcode numbers are the date of the first video he uploaded on dinof, and the last tour show date (in m/d/y)

i changed 'iceland' to 'poland' on the front cover, as he never actually went to iceland, and poland wasn't ever on the list even though he did go there

the orange may look a little off-center in the front, but these designs need to include space for a spine between the front and back cover, i promise it's right 😂

a shockingly perfect style for a WAD cover. i'm so glad i used the cubes, even if they couldn't be orange.

there's some versions of the art online where the sky is even more orange and it baffles me how i haven't seen any parallels like this before

the Muse: The Resistance cover

this cover was never supposed to see the light of day! i meant it when i said i was grateful i didn't have to try to adapt this complex design... and yet, i tried anyway.

i did all the grid lines by hand, including the jagged/broken edge parts, shading each section, and then drawing every star.

the hardest part was getting the gradient on the back text to cooperate. photoshop's gradient settings are surprisingly limited

gotta shout out @amazingphil for being the reason i knew what this cover looked like--it's the only muse album i knew the art of before embarking on this quest!

obligatory sob story:

i've been extremely and suddenly ill for 6 months. it is difficult to function moment to moment, but especially in doing little things just for me. this is the first and only art project i've been able to feel inspired to not only work on, but to finish, and despite the pain and long hours, i enjoyed every minute of it. thank you, dan, for creating this space for me to explore, and thank you, everyone here, for being wonderful support during this time 💞

Its finally done!!!

After getting back into BBC's Merlin recently (read: a couple months ago) I realized I no longer trusted streaming services to still have it available long term and managed to buy a complete DVD box set.

But because the slip case had quite a bit of wear to it (and due to some minor scopophobia) I made it a box that looks like a book!

(More rambling info & video under cut)

Materials:

The base construction is cardboard and paper (used to cover the exposed cut edges and strengthen corners). The box's faux paper edge is a printed texture on cardstock that was then waxed. The interior is black cardstock with silver vinyl. The 'book case' is that same cardboard construction with faux raised bands (made with some scrap foam I had) wrapped in Cialux's night blue bookcloth (hence the minor wrinkles) with Cricut HTV in metallic gold and 'reflective rainbow'.

Design:

Cover: Obviously Pendragon logo had to go front and center, no argument on that one. (Also partially cause Merlin doesn't really have his own symbol to him? The triskelion just doesn't make sense to me because although Emyrs is a symbol for the druids, Merlin himself isn't a druid and I'd imagine would instead choose icons of Camelot and Arthur to represent himself besides.) ANYWAY- Behind the crest, filligree containing a blade and the sidhe staff in that subtle reflective HTV that blends into the bookcloth exactly how I wanted until it catches the light (something something, hidden magic in the background something something).

Spine: Mortaeus flower! Because it really felt like a turning point for the two (you've known each other... what a week? and you're going against your father to travel to some far off cave to get a flower?? that's some good as dnd-adventuring-party type shit I love it). Minor detail are the top and bottom shapes: pulled from some cool windows we see a lot in season one (I just think there' neat, okay?)

Back Cover: Excalibur with two butterflies cut from the blue-toned area of the rainbow HTV :)

And finally the Inside!: The cup of life! Because it felt just a little empty. I'm still tempted to put something small on the bottom left corner of the inside cover... maybe a crown? not sure yet

Sleep Token Wembley Bingo

As promised, here it is: the Wembley Bingo cards of your predictions on what might go down at Wembley. Once again, thank you @fivewholeminutes for the og post!!

There are two versions, Red and Blue. They have the same predictions, but arranged in different ways. Just save the card you want and play along on Saturday! I may or may not have a ~prize~ for whoever completes a bingo.

A lot of the predictions were very similar, so I just combined them to save space. There are a few that have been left off, either because they already happened or for some other reason, and others that make sense for them to still be there - better explanations under the cut (because I don't want to spam anyone's dash):

Aqua Regia mix-up - it happened once already BUT it could still happen or not on Wembley, so I'm leaving it, because funny

Better/Bigger stage production - we got the super cool LED logo and amazing lights, but it's still very much possible for Wembley to have something extra/different

Predictions that I have cut off:

Unmasking/Identity reveal (see above)

Siam/Cleo cameo - for logistic reasons and for the snakeys well-being, I think it's safe to assume they won't be present (even though I'd love to see that 🐍)

Ritual starting on time - again, logistics are hard to control and late starts are pretty common. I figured this one was innocuous enough to leave out

iii screaming with a microphone - we don't know if he will be able to be present at all so, this one had to leave. I want you to have a change of getting a bingo!

Live official recording of the show (for a dvd or replay) - Adam Ross has stated a few weeks ago that the band does not wish to have a professional recording of their Rituals, and so an official pro-recording is a bit impossible

Previous tour props, like hats, etc - if we go by the German Rituals, they don't really bring anything over so, very very unlikely to happen

It will be a normal show - while I agree that there's a small chance Wembley will be just another regular ritual, there are a few extra special things that are bound to happen anyways, so in truth, it will never be a truly normal show. (also I needed to cut off one more 😬)

If any of these does end up becoming true, I am contractually obliged to grant you three wishes, so come find me afterwards.

Predictions that have been combined:

New masks/ new paints/ gold motifs/ new costumes - it all falls under the new/upgraded costume slot (although I kept Vessel and the guys separate)

Dancers /silent performances / theatrical elements

Pyrotechnics / Setting things on fire

Fields of Elation/ Sugar/ Telomeres/ The Apparition/ more songs in general - these were the ones most predicted to comeback/debut, so I combined them in the old songs/debut slot

Euclid/TNDNBTG - most people said it would start with The Night and end with Euclid, although I have seen a few variations in order. I kept the most common one, but it's game if on reverse

(Euclid appeared too many times, so that song has a special slot - just as TMBTE album played in full)

Stage props/ Background videos / Bigger lighting

Hozier being present; a Collad or a Cover

Remember, this is all in good fun! Some of these are super silly and fun, others are very likely to happen. What matters is that we all have a bit of fun while emotionally recovering form the London show (because we all know it'll be incredibly emotional!)

So I've been unhappy about the lack of physical media these days (and, unrelated to Good Omens, mightily pissed off at streaming services), which made me decide if I want to have my favourite shows on my shelf, I will do it myself if I have to. And since Amazon still doesn't look like it plans to sell me a nice DVD or Bluray set for season two, I went and did it my bloody self. I own a DVD writer and a printer and nobody can stop me.

Had lots of fun playing around designing sleeves, labels and on-screen menus. Behold my beautiful creations!

I used some of the very cool official posters for the covers. I loved the one that became my front cover; there's so much to see on it. (Also has this super handy scroll bit at the bottom where one only had to remove some Amazon logos to have space for labeling!)

Splurged on a couple of sheets of glossy photo paper to print the sleeves on. You wouldn't believe how much of a difference good paper makes for printout quality. The photos don't do them justice. The black is really black, the colours have great depth. I sat here giggling gleefully when these came out of the printer.

Here's the spines, sitting next to my season one Bluray (which I was happy to buy, hey Amazon please sell me stuff, you love selling things, I will buy things if you sell me things!) and my other self-made fave-show-on-shelf-putting-project.

If I do something, I do it properly. Disc labels with pictures on them!

Designing them was a blast; printing them was a fucking nightmare. I had a few pages of premade disc labels (sticker paper with perforated circles of the right sizes, so no cutting, yay). Already printing the sleeves took a good amount of test prints and template tweaking; I don't know why printing exactly to scale is still so difficult in 2024. I think Crowley was involved in designing printers. The things are definitely haunted. Printing a rectangle to scale? Difficult, but okay. Printing two circles to scale, in the exact correct position? Oh god I cursed so much. But look at them, aren't they beautiful? Definitely worth all the sweat and tears.

Menu screens! (Had a video of the first disc menu, mostly to show that it plays the Good Omens theme, but Tumblr hated it. Please imagine that all discs have this menu and that you can hear the theme playing while on the menu, thanks.)

DVDs fit 120 minutes of video, and I was super chuffed that I could get two episodes squeezed on one disc. So I have three discs with episodes, and an additional one with bonus stuff. Deleted scenes and VFX breakdowns with Muriel and Making Ofs. You know, the kind of things that are fun and cool about a box set for a show you like. Which I now have on my shelf. You gotta do everything yourself these days.

Have you seen this video logo before? 

If you grew up in the VHS era, you probably have. 

Simitar Entertainment were the most prolific distributors of budget VHS tapes. Their bread and butter lay in repackaging public domain cartoons, sports bloopers compilations, videos about Big Rig Trucks, Dad videos like “Golf Lessons from the Pros,” nearly all of which have not been released on DVD or streaming. The Internet Archive thankfully uploads and preserves these VHS treasures, particularly “Centerfold Photography,” as well as “Nonstop Crashes,” and “America’s Dumbest Crooks.” They also imported a lot of foreign films with cheap and easy to obtain rights, and Simitar at one point released both Jackie Chan’s Kung Fu movies and the Godzilla films into North America, not to mention the BBC’s Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. 

Tragically, Simitar went out of business due to a lawsuit from the WWF in 2000, just when the switch to DVDs took place, meaning that the company’s logo is associated entirely with the discount VHS era. Their library is currently owned by their old rivals and foes, former VHS distributor, Brentwood Communications. 

You’ll find this surprising, but one of the most soothing and relaxing activities activities is to get on YouTube look up and watch compilations of old VHS company logos, from Media to Vidmark.

Time period: Video Cassettes and other home media

This is possibly my last one for a while. Both because I feel like I’m stepping into territory I’ve already mentioned and because I’m fading interests. If you’re new here… these posts are sort of designed for the people who “can’t do time period” I’m basically giving you some cool common facts about the time so hopefully it’s a bit easier. Im a nitpicky person when It comes to my own stuff but I don’t expect you to be the 100% correct fic person either. All posts of this kind are tagged under time period and writing ref so they should be easy to find :)

This seems like a ‘no duh’ but tvs as they are now simply did not exist. No flat screens. They’re CRT or older. They’re HUGE and bulky but also have a relatively small screen at the same time. As we progressed into the 80s the side panel mainly shrank and the screen grew. (Also see, wood! Wood grain. I keep saying it was everywhere. It was everywhere.)

You may hear parents say “oh when I grew up we had three channels” etc which was mainly true. There was a limited number of Chanel’s for YEARS until cable came around and even then it was more a premium service and it was the late 80s , early 90s when it was more widely adopted.

With these big tvs with limited tvs and sometimes faulty service there’s a lot of myths to come with that. Like if you hit it a few times on top stuff with come back, or bending the bunny ears that you still see in some cartoons. Or ‘hey if we flush all the toilets at once…’ (this one’s more of a kid logic thing but the ritual and oh if I stand like this or do that is the same)

Now we come to video cassettes which is the more common spread name for a VHS tape that was still used well into the 90s. I think it’s a much more recent thing that we started just saying VHS, more common names were: Video cassette, video tapes, tapes, home video etc ;

They also do NOT work like dvds. If it’s re wound it should play from the beginning. They’ll be studio logos and a few adds or trailers and then the movie just starts. No menu! This being said movies were also limited to a time so they could fit on tape (this is one of the reasons old movies rarely go over a hour and a half). If they’re two hours or longer there’s double and sometimes triple tapes (once one ends you have to put in the next)

Be kind, rewind. There’s nothing automatic about it you have to manually or stores will fine you— or whoever watches it next in your house will fucking clobber you. It takes forever! (You don’t know the pain of being a kid in the early 2000s waiting for the little mermaid to finish rewinding).

Also this is purely speculatory on my part but I assume the reason renting tapes was a lot more common was because they were pretty expensive at the time. Like $30 (which is half of a video game today, they used to be like $7) someone who was alive at the time please correct me.

Physical media mania, again self explanatory. No streaming. No touch screen. No iPods. You buy records, cassettes, 8tracks, have a machine that plays them. Stereos — big family ones— were usually 3-4 parts (you see the towers or stacked machines in old movies.) there’s personal portable ones like walkmans or big boombox types.

No smart boards in the class. We see it in the movie. Teacher would have to get a projector, wheel it in and show the slides from a slide machine or one where you can place work over it. (Only the image isn’t half as crisp as in the movie) but writing on the chalkboard and pull down maps were more common. If a movie was being shown they’d wheel in a movie projector and place it down the middle isle of students. There’s no Disney + for your encanto kids

Augustus Le Plongeon introduced his idea of a lost continent called "Mu" after investigations of the Maya ruins in Yucatán. You can read more about it here.

This episode also mentions a place called New Dolema Island (ニュードレマ島) which I'm assuming is a play on New Caledonia (ニューカレドニア).

According to the 1974 January issue of TV Magazine, Honey really loves anmitsu and chocolate.

Anmitsu is a traditional Japanese cold jelly dessert, topped with fruits, dango, bean paste, ice cream and a dark colored syrup. Considering how much Honey enjoys chocolate, it’s not surprising she would be carrying around a bar of it during her travels. That being said, she shouldn’t have given chocolate to those baby monkeys. It’s not good for them!

The design for Crocodile Claw appears to be inspired by Ogon Bat. Ogon Bat was a superhero created by Suzuki Ichiro and Takeo Nagamatsu back in the 1930’s. This Japanese superhero made his debut in kamishibai, a type of street storytelling, in which a narrator tells a story with occupying images. Despite being a superhero, Ogon Bat evokes a very ghoulish appearance with his skull-like face and a Dracula-like cloak.

Honey transforms herself into a female version of Tarzan, known as Onna Tarzan or “Lady Tarzan.” Eiko Masuyama even does her own imitation of Johnny Weissmuller’s famous “Tarzan yell.”

Go Nagai has included female versions of Tarzan in a few of his works, including his extremely raunchy manga, Kekko Kamen.

There are at least two different versions of this episode: one where the Cutie Honey logo appears during a scene transition (after the Hayami guys ogle Honey in her Tarzan outfit) and one where it doesn't. The logo-less version has appeared on early home video releases and even the French dub. The version with the logo appears on the 2004 DVD remaster.

Parent-trapping your Best Friend: Ethical Dilemma or Best Idea Eddie Diaz has ever had?

Eddie is having a pretty good day, actually. And he wasn’t even ignoring his Abuela’s words from yesterday! Frank is going to have a fucking field day at Eddie’s next appointment.

Eddie is well-aware that he is irrevocably in love with his best friend. It isn’t a secret that Eddie keeps from himself anymore; It is a truth that empowers him, a love that strengthens rather than drains.

All that Eddie has to do is open his damn mouth and tell him.  

Do you remember how I said that when it came to relationships, Buck was like a golden retriever going downhill on a skateboard? Yeah, so it turns out dogs close their eyes when they do that. If you can’t see what’s going to hurt you, it won’t hurt right? Right?

Anyway, Eddie was having a pretty good day, even if he was, technically, two minutes late to work. From the bay doors, he can hear a conversation that could fit right in at a high school debate competition: ‘Telling Your Crush That You Like Them: For or Against?’.

“Wait, people actually tell their crushes that they like them?” Eddie asks, the question dripping with sarcasm as he joins Chimney and Ravi in the station locker room. 

“Yes, Eddie, some of us actually know how to communicate effectively,” says Chimney, matching Eddie’s tone. “What the hell do you do about your crushes then, if you don’t tell them?” he asks, leaning against the wall of lockers.

“Well, I made him the legal guardian of my son, in the case of my death, and then I got shot in front of him. That seemed to work,” Eddie surmises, finishing the buttons on his uniform.

Ravi’s head whips up and joins the conversation. 

Eddie likes Ravi; he’s a good kid and a decent firefighter. Surely, he will add something of value to this conversation.

“So, you baby-trapped him?” Ravi accuses, grinning widely.

In the time it takes for his face to fall, Eddie has decided that he no longer likes Ravi.

The incident alarm sounds at that moment, saving Ravi from a t-shirt to the face, and A-shift moves for the truck and ambulance.

“From one man in love with a Buckley to another, I think you should start taking your own advice,” Chimney says, kindly.

“I don’t think there’s a therapist on this planet that could get me to do that,” Eddie huffs, closing his locker door. 

A therapist, definitely not. But Evan Buckley, maybe.

Buck knows he has more than just ‘best friend’-ly feelings for one (1) Eddie Diaz. And he also knows that making your best friend the legal guardian of your son, when your girlfriend was right there, is not exactly ‘bro’ behaviour. He’s not entirely oblivious, credit where credit is due, but also how the hell is Buck supposed to bring that up in regular conversation?

“Hey, do you need anything from the grocery store? Also, remember how you made me Christopher’s other parent and then we never talked about it again? Oh, and I am in love with you. Can you preheat the oven?”

Buck would be lying if he said he hadn’t considered it. 

And so, Buck has been enduring the sweet torture of micro-dosing domestic bliss for the last God-knows how long, but that is not going to stop him from leaning on the loft railing at the beginning of each shift so he can perfectly time a, totally, coincidental locker room entrance. 

At 2 minutes past 8:00am, Eddie walks into the garage, right on schedule.

After waiting the customary 37 seconds, Buck makes his way down the stairs, stopping just out of sight of the glass walls (seriously, who the hell thought that was a good idea?) when he hears a truly unhinged phrase from Ravi.

“So, you baby-trapped him?” 

Alas, the universe is a fickle deity, and the incident alarm sounds before the ‘DVD-Video’ logo can hit the corner of Buck’s brain and produce a viable thought.

Working on nothing other than muscle memory and ‘baby-trapped’ on loop in his mind, Buck follows Ravi to the engine, joined quickly by the rest of A-shift.

Hot tip: if you have immense romantic feelings for your best friend, do not become firefighters because when you sit next to them in a fire truck you will be pressed against their side for an absolutely torturous amount of time.

Their first call was uneventful, and the rest of the shift was quiet fine, mostly basic rescues and straight-forward medical calls. And so Buck finds himself standing in the slowly emptying locker-room with Eddie next to him, allowing the day’s adrenaline to seep out of him with every slow breath. He chances a look at Eddie, just as Eddie does the same. They both smile softly, and Eddie tilts his head toward the door, a silent but permanent invitation.

Neither one of them are certain of when their relationship shifted. Perhaps, they were always destined to end up as a family, together and in love. Either way, it has led to the most profound relationship both have ever experienced. A relationship enriched with comfort and desire simultaneously, that both are terrified to damage. But, at the same time it is the kind of relationship that strengthens with every look, word, and action. So, maybe, it isn’t so scary after all when sitting on the perfect couch, Eddie takes Buck’s hand, opens his damn mouth, and tells him how bright the sun shines when Buck is by his side. 

Their family will call them ‘insufferable’ and ‘sickeningly in love’ because they are. But there is safety in love and a truth that strengthens rather than drains.
