Thinking about Lilo & Stitch makes me really appreciate certain things about the original + the series. Almost every single named [human] character in the movie isn’t white: the only exception being Mertle, y’know, the bratty little girl we’re not supposed to like.

Besides all of the racial representation, Lilo herself is very much a neurodivergent icon, and her portrayal as the protagonist is amazing considering how characters like her are typically either sidelined or depicted in ways to make them less sympathetic/human (modern media does at least a slightly better job at adressing that kind of thing tho).

So all of that is great, but to anyone that hasn’t seen Lilo & Stitch: The Series, it also does some extremely refreshing stuff.

Pleakley gets tons of validation to dress in drag, everyone always referring to Pleakley as “she” when dressed up as “aunt Pleakley.” There’s even an episode that tackles Pleakley dealing with the pressures of his family that wants him to marry a girl and settle down to have a “normal life.” After the episode's shenanigans, there's a realistic depiction of the misunderstanding of a heteronormative/traditional parent with their non-traditional child: Pleakley's mom says that she just wants her children to be happy, but when Pleakley says that he is happy, she thinks he's only trying to console her as she insists, "How can you be happy? You aren't even married." But Pleakley finally gets it through to his mom when he says, "I don't want to be married, mother! I'm happy just as I am."

After getting to meet all of Pleakley's ohana throughout the episode and hearing from Pleakley himself -after all of the previous misunderstandings- that he really, truly, is happy, she's finally starting to understand.

Even though his mom comments as they leave that she wants him to “try wearing men’s clothes more often,” she still does walk away accepting that she simply doesn’t understand her son's way of thinking. It’ll definitely be hard for her since she’s so much more “traditional,” but she’s finally coming to grips with the fact that her son is who he is, and likes being that way, so she’ll love him regardless. She's trying her best.

The portrayal of people with physical disabilities is also great. It’s not because there’s one recurring character with some condition, but almost because there are non-recurring characters. It isn’t in every episode, but here’s an example: they want to show someone at the park playing fetch with their dog for just one shot. They could very easily have it be any a random person, but they decided to make it a lady in a wheelchair. There's another episode where Nani's friends from highschool show up and one has forearm crutches, but not just because she had some recent accident. No one in the episode questions her condition or feels the need to point it out, the only comment on it being that the friend will use the crutches to lightly bonk the others' arms, and Nani jokes, "You are still deadly with that thing."

The fact that they include characters with disabilities when they "don't have to" makes it that much more normal. These people aren't some special case or the main highlight of the episode, they're just another person. They're normal.

There's so much that all of the original Lilo & Stitch media did right, but now the name will forever be tainted with the association of the remake, which I'm sure will have absolutely none of the tasteful writing and ideas of anything prior to it.

Here again, looking for art prompts 🙂 I’ll do these every week, anything you want (fluff, angst, crack, mofu, I’m pretty open, just no preg/mpreg, drugs, or kids) and I’ll pick at least one to sketch from different socials (3-4 total)and share the following week. You can see 3 here from last week’s prompts. 

I’ll also post more of the sketches when I feel like making more and share the progress updates on my patreon. Patrons who post prompts on Patreon get picked first.

Also, if I don’t pick your idea one week, wait for it to show up the following weeks, I’ll try to do as many different prompts as I can over the month.

Doesnt it drive you crazy. Doesnt it drive you crazy how lilo and stitch was concieved as a story that above all is about family and how outcasts stick together with themes of anti colonialism and over time its public perception has been turned into "cute monster buy plushies of it isnt stitch so cute". Doesnt it make you want to kill someone

Just watched live action Lilo and Stitch...

I had my doubts before going, but I was not expecting it to be WORSE than I feared.

WHAT DID THEY DO TO MY LOVELY JUMBA?! WHAT DID THEY DO TO THE FAMILY?!

WHY IS JUMBA EVIL? WHY DID THEY SPLIT HIM UP FROM PLEAKLEY AND THE OTHERS? WHY DID NANI GIVE LILO UP AT THE END?

LOOK AT HOW THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO BE:

THEY ARE A FAMILY. THEY ARE OHANA.

Are those constellations? Drawn on the wall, supposedly in Lilo’s room? With Hawaiian names?

No. It is important to me that people understand. No.

Lilo has carefully decided-upon interests. Don’t you guys think it’s interesting that in the original movie they could have said, “hey, the little girl is going to have her life invaded by outer space aliens; why don’t we make her an outer space enthusiast?” but they didn’t?

Have you ever wondered why that is? Because again, somebody had to choose what would decorate her room. People had to decide what her interests would be. Ever wondered why they picked what they did?

Partly it’s because Chris Sanders likes fun creepiness and dark silly stuff.

But also, Lilo is a character who’s wrapped up in wanting to have someone who stays.

So she takes pictures of tourists, as if they’re “fascinating creatures” even though they’re people like her. Why do you think that is? It’s because she knows they’re leaving. She’s 7 and she knows that there are people who come to her town specifically to leave. So she treats them like exotic anomalies. Because she doesn’t want the “norm” to be “people leave.”

Also, she’s supposed to add onto her desire for people to stay a certain characteristic called “loneliness.” She doesn’t have friends. Why doesn’t she have friends? Because she’s bizarre. She’s a little weird. She likes making voodoo experiments and she makes up stories about fish controlling the weather and she makes up wacky names.

So the two ingredients you have that make up this little girl are:

Is lonely and wants people to stay in her little world.

Is a little weird and has weird interests.

Her room’s not decorated with “OUT THERE, AWAY FROM EVERYTHING SHE KNOWS” stuff because Lilo doesn’t have an interest in the “world outside of Hawaii,” as a place. Lilo loves her own little world. Her favorite singer isn’t a flashy new one, it’s Elvis, ol’ reliable. Her room is decorated with fish. And fishing nets. And seashells.

She’s not a Hawaiian bored with Hawaii but excited about the literal-furthest-place-you-could-go-from-Hawaii, OUTER SPACE. She’s NOT.

She loves her own little world, and she wants everyone she loves to stay in it, because her parents just died. Just left, out of her life, forever. When we meet her, she’s not a character with dreams who needs someone to believe in her or validate her. That’s other characters. It’s not LILO. Lilo is a character who needs Stitch because she’s lonely and she’s lost people and she’s not easy to love, herself. She’s not a character who needs Stitch the way Ariel needs Eric. Jeez.

She’s a desperate-to-STAY-faithful-and-have-others-STAY-with-her character. Not an “Out There” character.

And that stuffed animal? Lilo does not do pink poodles.

Random Headcanons Relationship: David Kawena as a boyfriend

One of the sweetest and soft hearted men his partner will ever meet.

He will always make time for his partner to the best of his ability but if some does come up he would always make it up to him at a different time.

When it comes to dates whether he or his partner plans it or they plan it together he doesn't mind how it goes as long as it's clear who is handling it.

He is up for any kind of date whether it be a date that's about learning new things or just watching movies at home.

He is sweet but honest so if his partner asks him about something he will say how he feels or thinks about it.

His affection is soft, gentle  and tame most of the time.

Because of this he doesn't mind being affectionate in public but will hold back if his partner isn't comfortable with it.
