the great thing about the new tiling window compositor I have installed on my laptop is that if I need a morale boost I can just swipe to the next workspace and see lovingly rendered full-screen fanart of catboys kissing each other (because it is my desktop background)

why the hell i'm posting this here i have no idea, but: my most commonly typed linux commands, grouped together (top) and split into exact matches (bottom)
kitty-launch is my homebrew application launcher; sudo-comment is my system file tracker, which pushes "addcomment" to the shell any time it notices a change.

How to Deal with Windows 10/11 Nonsense
This is more for my own reference to keep all of this on one post. But hopefully others will find this useful too! So yeah, as the title says, this is a to organize links and resources related to handling/removing nonsense from Windows 10 and Windows 11. Especially bloatware and stuff like that Copilot AI thing.
First and foremost, there's O&O Software's ShutUp10++ (an antispy tool that help give you more control over Windows settings) and App Buster (helps remove bloatware and manage applications). I've used these myself for Windows 10 and they work great, and the developers have stated that these should work with Windows 11 too!
10AppsManager is another bloatware/app management tool, though at the moment it seems to only work on Windows 10.
Winaero Tweaker, similar to ShupUp10++ in that it gives you more control over Windows to disable some of the more annoying settings, such as disabling web search from the taskbar/start menu and disabling ads/tips/suggestions in different parts of the OS. I think ShupUp10++ covers the same options as this one, but I'm not entirely sure.
OpenShell, helps simplify the Start Menu and make it look more like the classic start menu from older versions of Windows. Should work with both 10 and 11 according to the readme.
Notes on how to remove that one horrible AI spying snapshots feature that's being rolled out on Windows 11 right now.
Article on how to remove Copilot (an AI assistant) from Windows 11. (Edit 11/20/2024) Plus a post with notes on how to remove it from Windows 10 too, since apparently it's not just limited to 11 now.
Win11Debloat, a simple script that can be used to automatically remove pretty much all of the bullshit from both 10 and 11, though a lot of its features are focused on fixing Windows 11 in particular (hence the name). Also has options you can set to pick and choose what changes you want!
Article on how to set up Windows 11 with a local account on a new computer, instead of having to log in with a Microsoft account. To me, this is especially important because I much prefer having a local account than let Microsoft have access to my stuff via a cloud account. Also note this article and this article for more or less the same process.
I will add to this as I find more resources. I'm hoping to avoid Windows 11 for as long as possible, and I've already been used the O&O apps to keep Windows 10 trimmed down and controlled. But if all else fails and I have to use Windows 11 on a new computer, then I plan to be as prepared as possible.
Edit 11/1/2024: Two extra things I wanted to add onto here.
A recommended Linux distro for people who want to use Linux instead of Windows.
How to run a Windows app on Linux, using Wine. Note that this will not work for every app out there, though a lot of people out there are working on testing different apps and figuring out how to get them to work in Wine.
The main app I use to help with my art (specifically for 3D models to make references when I need it) is Windows only. If I could get it to work on Linux, it would give me no reason to use Windows outside of my work computer tbh (which is a company laptop anyways).

Eka, do you have any beginner tips for learning Linux? Or recommendations? 馃
hello mysterious sewing needle anon! I'm not sure what the "beginner" distro is these days, maybe Mint?
in no particular order:
definitely make sure you have a "backup" machine.
get comfortable using a terminal. you'll want to do this sooner or later. if you have a command called foobar, "man foobar" and "foobar --help" (that's two hyphens) will generally show you help.
fish is a good shell, imo more newbie friendly than sh or bash or zsh or whatever.
get comfortable with your distribution's package manager of choice, and prefer installing stuff from it if you can. it's a vastly better experience than windows's "download random shit and let it install itself".
for other things, flatpak is a reasonable alternative.
if you're editing config files by hand, make a backup copy of them. there are some fancy tools for managing config files but I'm not aware of any that are beginner-friendly.
if you fuck up your system so bad you can't get a graphical environment, you can use ctrl-alt-f2 to switch to a virtual terminal
if you fuck it up so bad you can't even boot, you can boot off a USB stick, mount your hard drive, and fix it that way. the installer you use for your distro will work for this.
when it comes to desktop environments, I have no particular opinions on gnome vs plasma vs. whatever else is out there because I use sway because I'm cool. anything that describes itself as being based on "Wayland" is newer, and some things might not work as well (screensharing), but will have better support for HiDPI displays
many Steam games that are not officially supported on Linux can be made to run anyway, and will run just as well. I don't remember the setting for this. for non-Steam games, not sure.
overall, have fun! it has its quirks but I'm happy knowing that my computer isn't going to try to force telemetry and AI nonsense onto me

I started messing with my Linux config again and have managed to make it so that GTK apps have dark and light mode switched (so when I set it to dark mode it's actually in light mode and vice versa) and also Firefox completely ignores the theme and just has stock white for its popup elements. So it's going normal, I think.

Game Fuckery Help and Linux List [Update].
Tumblr media
I'm avoiding re-installing this shit again, so in the meantime I'm sorting some stuff into lists. For Linux research purposes.
Edit: Standby Memory Allocation on Windows 10: New info coming in: That's not the issue. However, what i wrote below about TM is my own experience and has worked for me (without doing what Jessa was saying in the SB memory part, I remembered, hope I didn't waste anybody's time). Does it make sense? idk, but it's harmless, and if it's actually a thing and not just a freak coincidence, and can help anybody else then why not. I do remember trying it with and without cleaning cache :/ [for fuck sake the nerve on EA to put out for sale a new edition without improving it to 64bit]. As discussed by Jessa below, it's an OS problem. What worked for me, for some bizarre reason was to keep Task Manager on before and while playing the game. without it my game was crashing often, on my main non gaming computer. What solved it was fixing windows... for anyone's interested, the gory details are at the bottom of the post under the cut.
+ That combined with clearing cache often.
Jessa's video (Memory Allocation and 4GB Patch Repair). Edit: Turns out this video was pulled back, so basically just make sure the patch is applied?
1. Secound opinion on the whole matter by BrandiNotBroke [the whole #pink flash diaries tag is interesting]:
2. Leefish forum - Sims2 Graphic Cards:
3. @celebkiriedhel's Post (Texture Memory):
Linux:

2. @nonsensical-pixels about Linux.
3. @brandinotbroke, first Linux supporter I've encountered here. A comprehensive post:
4. @grilledcheese-aspiration, Transferring software and such from Windows to Linuxs:
Texture Memory Fuckery (Pink Soup, among other things):
Kiri's post linked at the beginning, first an foremost.
Original Post by @fireflowersims, plus; re-blog by @ovytia. Both of their tags, and comment:
2. A recap on Pink Soup/Texture Sizes by @rockethorse in the comments:
That's it for now. Any more information or good links will be welcome.
Task Manager thing briefly, for the curious (as if it interests anyone else but me, but in the interest of keeping track).
So the game was crashing often. That thing was easy to spot because the laptop would make loud airplane noises when I'd load the game. It got stuck or something, so I went to end it by force with task manager and noticed that all the resources where used to the max - right up until I'd open TM, and then everything would cool down. Like it was playing hide and seek with me. So I figured I'd get smart with it right back, and just leave TM open the whole time. Low and behold, the game stopped crashing. That combined with clearing cache often. Does it make sense? idk, but the computer works in mysterious ways.

If you could describe yourself in one Linux command, how would you do it?
a) sudo rm -rf /* - Destructive person.
b) grep -r "answer" / - Searching for answers and information about the universe.
c) cat /dev/random - Thinking about being creative with unexpected outputs!
d) man {command} - Always try to explain things when asked.
e) ls -l /dev/null - Nothing of value contributed to society.
f) fortune | cowsay | lolcat - Add random wisdom, but mostly nonsense, to the conversation.
g) :(){ :|:& };: : ...some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

So Warframe added a "Pom-2" Alternate 1999 computer (that's needed for weird void magic future science wizardry). Thoughts?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Only thing I have that's a sort of question mark is that I don't know of many setups that would have needed a 5 1/4" floppy in 99 (or why it has both the tower and the under monitor unit)
ugh. OKAY, so... the tower and desktop combination is just weird. I have, on one occasion, run a "server" that was two towers, and the original PC supported a DUAL-DESKTOP mode, but both types together? nonsense.
dual monitor was rare but possible in 1999 (win98 added native support), so I think the best interpretation here is that this is actually two computers. maybe the one on the left is missing the keyboard and mouse because it's being used as some kind of server for the other computer? I used a little case like that to run my first linux server, which was also acting as a router for my internal network.
The OS is weird. The icons above the menu-bar look like win98, the dialog box is windows 3.x, the menu-bar icons on the bottom are pure os X (although they remind me of like a web-TV kinda system, like hotkeys for email/internet/etc), but the greyscale is very classic mac system. Actually it kinda reminds me of C64's GEOS, but GEOS was very classic-mac.
Tumblr media
Like most CRT-filters, they turned the scanlines up WAY TOO HIGH. No CRT I've ever seen looked that fucking terrible. The monitor buttons are a bit odd: You didn't get monitors with buttons on the front until long after they were all color... but maybe it's a color monitor that's showing a monochrome OS?
as for the floppies: yeah. There are multiple mistakes here.
5.25" in 1999 is just silly. If you still had 5.25" disk drives in 1999, you were intentionally doing some retrocomputing stuff. For reference, around 2001 my PC repair job would specifically ask me to copy data off 5.25" disks, because they didn't have any 5.25" drives anymore, and I was their only tech who did.
The other mistake is that they have THREE floppy drives. so the PC doesn't really support that, natively? You can do some tricks and make it work (The youtuber Tech Tangents did a video on how it could be done), but realistically two was the normal max.
The final mistake is that all the drive activity lights are on. Those are only supposed to be on while the drive is reading or writing... and I don't see any disks in those drives! Let alone a situation that would involve turning all three on at once (I don't think that's even possible on most floppy controllers!)
In fact, the main time you'd end up with the drive lights stuck on like that is when you've installed the drive cable upside down. That ends up with them getting stuck on and non-functional. So this computer looks, to me, like it was put together incorrectly and no one noticed.
I don't believe that font would be on a black & white retro computer. Nope. Too smooth and too big.
There's also a USB icon on that OS: I don't think there's ever been a monochrome OS that supported OS, and looking at that computer case I don't believe that it has USB. Maybe the tower would, but the desktop? no.
That keyboard is off a Gateway 2000 computer. Something like this:

Dear distro blogs,
MacOS is different from Linux mainly because it has a completely separate kernel. K? Whether or not the fundamentals of the OS are BASED OFF some obscure nonsense called Unux is irrelevant.
Sincerely, a MacOS user
The code for MacOS isnt based off of unix. It IS Unix. Specifically, its a mixture of the XNU kernel and a lot of code from FreeBSD, Which is a direct evolution of UNIX. So the way MacOS works is that the main OS is developed by apple, under the name Darwin. Darwin is constructed of 3 main components: The closed source drivers, the Closed Source GUI components, and the Open source Darwin bit, which encompasses literally everything else that computer needs to run. Darwin is a lil frankenstein made up of the XNU kernel and I/O kit, The networking stack and File system of FreeBSD, and some code by apple to make it co.patible with their custom ARM silicon.
Linux is also based off of the UNIX Kernel. It relies on the GNU coreutils to provide a way for the user to interface with the system, to state it simply.
So at the end of the day, your technically right. They aren't the same thing. But ignoring the fundamental design and history of the computers which run and control your daily life as simply "irrelevant" I believe is an extremely concerningly ignorant and frankly close-minded stance to take.
And also your just mad we put linux on the new macbooks lol eat shit anon trying to get me to monologue as an attempt for engagement.

scream all of your till headcanons
ahhhhh ouhh i had a list of them but i can't find it -_- i'll just type the ones i remember
according to his cc toyhouse profile he is straight, but in my beautiful heart he is a gay bear.
pre-op. maybe even non-op....!!!!
he uses linux (im not sure of the spinch name for it, but i see him as a linux user)
objectum for technology, especially for his laptop.
adding onto that, in the drawing i have as my banner, he is depicted with a playlist on his screen; i like to think he makes playlists for his laptop!
this one is super self indulgent and personal BUT, i imagine him as schizophrenic. whenever he speaks he says nonsense and stutters because his brain cannot make coherent sentences, so he prefers texting instead of irl talking.
kittycorn mentioned years ago that he's unlucky due to being a black cat, and in a drawing posted by his creator he is with jay. i think tilly spends lots of time with jay because, without them, he keeps having bad things happen. they're good pals! besties! a bit codependent on tilly's part though.
he doesn't know how to cook very well, he usually orders takeout or does simple stuff like instant noodles or frozen pizza.
i'm pretty sure this one is canon, but i don't see tilly as a tall dude. maybe 5'2''? around that height.
due to his schizophrenia he has trouble taking care of himself, he smells like sweat and his fur feels greasy to the touch. he also forgets to get haircuts, this is why i draw him with long hair!
he's on testosterone and loving it. wonderful world yayy ^_^
i can't think of anything more, but those are the main ones. the schizophrenia ones are personal, i don't really talk about those, and they have a biiiiit of projection. bleh :-P
