🌙Poll💫
Tumblr media
Welcome to the moth cave, home of the moth man and many others. This post shall be an introduction ish thing for new people and for people who need a refresher (please note I’ll be adding more to this post as time goes on and I reveal more about my au and introduce new characters)
Things to know about the moth man
Sona design reference
I am a nonbinary trans man (pronouns are they/him) who loves to draw and interact with people
Please read the messaging rules before sending me a message. I don’t want an anxiety attack to happen
Do I do drawing requests? Yes kind of, I might sketch some requests when I get bored
Can I draw the moth man’s characters? Yes just credit and ping me and don’t draw them in inappropriate ways
Can I have 1 of the moth man’s character’s show up in an au? Depends how much I know you. If you’re a person I talk to a lot then you can ask me. If I don’t know you then don’t ask me
Main au OC’s
Yu ling ren
- Yu ling’s battle suit
- Little Yu ling
- Yu ling’s weapons
- Voice claim
Yu ling is a survivor with no purpose, no more destiny. Just a girl who wants to do what’s right for the world but can hardly interfere without going against her 1 very meaning (Information might get redone in the future)
Diedie (the dandelion child)
- diedie’s parents
- diedie’s bird
Diedie is a child from 1920s china who was in the right place at the right time. She became the guardian of an ancient artifact named the lotus reliquary after stopping a demon from destroying it. Diedie seems to have gained the liking of the village elders especially the village’s crazy lady, someone who always seems to know what diedie wants to say but can’t
Bendy
Bendy is the ink demon living in yu ling’s hand fan and helps protect Yu ling when needed. They are a lot smarter and more emotional than the ink demon in the scroll and they like to mimic people to figure out how to behave. They don’t get a lot of situations but they’re trying to understand them
Other characters
The lady/crazy lady
The lady is an armless old woman who up keeps the temple of the East Sea and helps teach diedie. She is known as the crazy lady by the villagers for showing up out of nowhere and her strange ways and behavior. diedie picked up on her weird way of speaking about certain myths, talking about grand journeys and giant snakes made only from 2 throwing silver around like it was all real, diedie was young but she was smart, even if those myths were true they’re old to old for anyone in those myths to still be alive today
The assistant
- Off work Outfit
The assistant is a strange being, her kind and innocent exterior almost seems to be a façade to hide something but what? The only things people know for sure about her is her name and her willingness to sacrifice things for the greater good
Spirit dragon (place holder name)
The spirit dragon is a scrappy, quiet and shy spirit. The spirit dragon is sensitive to heat and it always feels like they’re eating a very hot pepper, due to this they tries to stay in cold or wet environments, they always have things to say but is always to shy to say them
The mystery maiden

━。゜✿ jily fic recommendations ✿ ゜。━
Really, we shouldn’t be surprised by now but I have more amazing jily AU fics to share because the writers of this fandom are incredibly talented and I have my screen report to prove it.
For reference, anything in italics is taken from the summaries on ao3.
Tumblr media
serendipity by desperateforsanity (on ao3)
Modern college/uni AU. Dearest Students and Staff, I am pleased to announce Hogwarts University’s fourth annual Pen Pal Program. Upperclassmen and sophomores likely remember and cherish the memories of their previous penpals and are excited to make another friend this year.
TW: for the later chapters for discussions of grief and its effects on one's mental well-being. For the most part, though this is a fun fic full of great banter!
The Frenzied Misadventures of Balcony Man and Window Woman by @clare-with-no-i
prompt: "It's 3am why are you outside my window- are you trying to rob me?"
It feels necessary to preface this entire thing with the fact that, yes, James had good reason to be dangling precariously from a third-floor balcony, and anyone who says differently is simply attempting to smear his good name.
At least, that’s the story he’s sticking to.
Hijinks & Shenanigans
mellow is the man (who knows what he's been missing) also by @/ clare-with-no-i
Earl's Court. 24th May, 1975. Led Zeppelin live in concert like you've never seen them before.
FEATURING: prolonged eye contact, deeply metaphoric descriptions of cigarette smoke, painful levels of detail about makeup, and a special one-time performance by Two Teens In Love! OR: the "we made eye contact at a Led Zeppelin concert but my friends pulled me away to mosh before I could come say hello" AU
So when I say that I saw this unfold frame by frame in my head, I mean the writing is on another level. The way that I could almost smell Earl Court ... I regret waiting so long to read it. Also, found out this is written by the same author as one of my favourite jily fics foreigner’s god so that explains it “I'm not a religious person but I do sometimes think God made you for me.” ― Sally Rooney, Normal People
but he’s a little bit too far away by @firefeufuego
Historical AU. A decade after they met as cadets for The Times, the toll of James chasing stories in war zones is starting to hit home for Lily.
Taking A Shot At You by @annabtg
Modern AU. Lily Evans, pharmacist, has to work all day and night on New Year's Eve - and ends up ringing in the new year with a bloke who just got himself a dog bite.
The Right Track by BeeDaily (on ao3)
Co-workers modern AU. When James is first handed the train ticket, his immediate reaction is to laugh openly in his father's face.
the horoscope by lirians
Modern AU. James stops momentarily to give way to a bunch of rambunctious teenagers on the pavement before he regains his step. Lily has come to a halt a bit further, waiting on him.
“Horoscopes?” he asks as they move onwards. He’s relieved that any awkwardness between them is apparently gone. “How so?”
“Marly sent me mine this week because it said I would meet someone from the past again,” she explains. “I’m still not sold on the idea of it, but isn’t this weird?”
I was inspired to read this by this art
The Falcon and The Squid by @jfleamont
There's a Lego Millennium Falcon that needs to be built. There's also a bet, a ring and a bike.
Put it all together and what do you get?
Leda's jily will always be a favourite of mine. They're idiots in love your honour
Glastonbury by elanev91 (on ao3)
Prompt: we're at a music festival and you crawled into my tent when drunk and fell asleep, now you've woken up bewildered and to be honest I should be more annoyed but you're just so good looking
One Day at Time by @sweeethinny
Single-mum-lily AU. One day at a time is the mantra Lily uses to keep peace inside her mind, but there are days when it's simply impossible and in the end all she needs is a glass of wine, a cozy hug with her boyfriend, and a serious talk with her son.
Note that you can read this as a stand-alone one shot but it's part of a series that takes place in this AU
For All My Life by aheartcalledhome & SecondJadeofLan (on ao3)
When saving the bees ends in a happy family.
pumpkins and blueberries by evotter (on ao3)
Modern soulmate AU. In which Lily Evans hates puzzles, Marlene McKinnon is a coffee-making goddess, and the stuffy manager with the unkempt hair just so happens to be Lily's soulmate. In the wise words of Mary Macdonald, nothing is scarier than a relationship. Especially if it's with your soulmate.
After Moon by lovesickjily (on ao3)
When the universe sent Lily back in time for some inexplicable reason, she didn’t realise that she’d fall for the charming, messy-haired Prince along the way, nor did she realise that she’d see him once again.
here's to never growing up by elixirsoflife (on ao3)
Chat fic where a group chat documents the lives of four highly dramatic teenage boys as they navigate their A Levels.
Or, like, die trying.
Okay, I rarely ever read chat fics, they're just not my thing. BUT this one had me wheezing on my way to school. It's crack. Just treat it like crack
Ice Baby also by elixirsoflife
Modern college/uni AU. In his defence, James never expected to meet his soulmate at thirteen minutes past eleven on a Sunday morning when he’s aiming a puck at Sirius’ balls.
Or: call me sweetheart again and I'll punch you in the throat.
Not a Clue by PotterandEvans (on ao3)
Modern college/uni Quarantine AU. Lily stood in the doorway of the flat, looking at the boy in front of her. She had spent most of the last two years keeping her distance from the annoying piece of work, staying away from his ego mostly. “Come in.” She said, stepping away from the doorway to let him into the flat that she usually shared with Remus.
"Ah, so kind." James muttered as he walked inside, his heavy bag weighing him down. This really was not the ideal situation, for either of them. But he had nowhere else to go, so staying with Lily Evans it was going to have to be.
they were zoommates (requires an ao3 account) by elanev91 (on ao3)
Modern college/uni Quarantine AU. Lily's on lockdown and, because she can't help herself, signs herself up for a whole bunch of extra (and free) work with her ad agency. Minerva, her boss, assigns a cheeky social media manager to her team to help her. Also, Marlene discovers TikTok (this is nowhere near as important to the narrative as its inclusion here suggests).
And You Heard About Me (Ooh, We’ve Got Some Big Enemies!) by @wearingaberetinparis
Fame AU. Lily Evans is a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter and global superstar, who recently broke up from her latest and long-term actor boyfriend Amos Diggory. James Potter is a professional football player who plays as a forward for Manchester United and has never been quiet about his celebrity crush: Lily Evans. When Lily Evans thus plays at Wembley Stadium - a place he is more than familiar with due to his being part of the England team - he just has to go and see her perform, embracing his inner, besotted fan boy, while the woman on stage is completely oblivious to his presence. Or is she?
The most unrealistic part was man u winning (but it's James so that explains it). Regardless, I started this fic while waiting for my final grades from last year to come through, and while they were disappointing, this sure wasn't. I was crying so hard that I fell asleep. Then I woke up and continued the fic and suddenly I was giggling along with Lilly. Anything and everything Mary writes is a masterpiece. Thank you for sharing this wonderful story.
it continues (the beginning doesn't matter) by whitesunlars (on ao3)
She is the last person he expected at his door at that exact moment, despite feeling unsure about the fact that she managed to track down his address, he agrees to go out to coffee with her. A lot could be said about James Potter, but nobody could claim that he had good self-preservation skills.
They meet in a bar. Mistakes happen. They learn to keep going.

I've been thinking of Soon and his treatment by the Order of the Scribble.
There's no secret that Soon is at the heart of the conflict within the Order of the Scribble. Girard specifically didn't like him and old Serini is constantly insulting him and his Saffire Guard. They say he is grumpy, stubborn and too uptight. He's not willing to compromise and his oath is annoying.
However, in the short time he actually appeared in the comic he didn't give that impression at all. He was a powerful leader over the ghost-samurai-paladins and specifically his interaction with Miko was anything but grumpy. Miko ruined everything, pretty much made all the paladins' sacrifices useless and let the villain get away, but Soon still treated her with compassion. He was patient and reassuring even though he had all reason to be mad at her. And this doesn't seem to be a case of him "being kind to his own" since Miko wasn't a paladin anymore.
So why is there this contradiction between his old team mates view of him and the one we actually see? Could he have mellowed out with age? Sure, but I don't think it's just that. Judging by how both Girard and Serini thought he would break his oath all willy-nilly shows that they didn't really know him. They may have adventured with him but I don't think they ever bothered to try to actually get to know him or befriend him. Then, with Kraagor's death it seems Soon became the Order of the Scribble's scape goat. They badmouth him and considers his contribution useless, even though Soon has pretty much been the best gate guardian so far. Soon has: - been seconds away from killing both Xykon and Redcloak (if not for Miko's bad judgement). - kept his oath and made sure his paladins did the same resulting in none of them being able to give Redcloak information about the other gates. - after the destruction of his own gate sent his paladins/allies to safeguard the other gates (and even though Serini looks down on them they're sure to play a role in the final battle).
The other guardians, Serini, Dorukan, Lirian, were all defeated by Xykon. Dorukan and Lirian got their gates destroyed and while Serini's gate is still fine she was the one who got her diary about the gates location stolen by Xykon in the first place. Girard sadly never got the chance to show his proper defences of his gate.
Overall I think the Order of the Scribble owe a bit of an apology to Soon. If anything he's probably the one who worked the hardest to keep the Snarl sealed.

Summer Fic Reading Challenge Bingo [1/?]
Tumblr media
Bingo Number 1 on my summer reading challenge card from @ficreadingchallenge. These are all works that I've read and commented on since getting my card. I used to get really competitive over finishing my summer reading challenge every summer at the library so this is really fun :)
Canon Compliant: This Word Lies at the Bottom of a Lake by berhanes [Remus/Sirius, T, 7k]
Briefly he'd considered going to visit Remus, but Sirius has too many stacked up feelings about him to add any more, and he doesn't trust himself not to ruin their carefully patched situation in the wake of the incident – it's only been a year, after all, and there's no better way to shatter a barely recovered friendship than by doing something stupid like throwing out a declaration of love in the middle of explaining the myriad ways in which your family is deranged and terrible. So instead Sirius had hailed the Knight Bus and requested Bowness-on-Windermere.
No Powers AU: the horoscope by lirians [James/Lily, T, 14k]
James stops momentarily to give way to a bunch of rambunctious teenagers on the pavement before he regains his step. Lily has come to a halt a bit further, waiting on him. “Horoscopes?” he asks as they move onwards. He’s relieved that any awkwardness between them is apparently gone. “How so?” “Marly sent me mine this week because it said I would meet someone from the past again,” she explains. “I’m still not sold on the idea of it, but isn’t this weird?”
Free Space: don’t want to miss our little talks by dukeaubergine [Severus & Lily, T, 1k]
Lily breaks the news of her pregnancy to her best friend.
Work In Progress: Evernight by LilRinnieB [Harry/Severus, E, 331k]
It's Harry's seventh year at Hogwarts and the new strategy in the war against Voldemort is "Fight darkness with darkness." Harry goes through a series of changes that has him questioning everything he thought he ever knew about magic, darkness, destiny … and a certain snarky Potions professor. (I've rec'd this before but it just updated so...)
Sports AU: Learning How To Fall Properly by FivePips [Remus/Sirius, M, 60k]
Remus Lupin meets 2/3 of the Marauders while getting harassed by a few homophobes. He meets the third at the skatepark and soon falls into this group of friends, who are so much more than just the delinquents the residents of their town think they are. This story goes out and beyond their teen years, following accomplishments and heartbreaks and maybe a gold medal or two.

ISB Reports: Surgical Corps OCs
Here is the info on my OCs from this post:
Edgard
Tumblr media
Edgard is Executor's lead surgeon, they are one of the very few people who have both the knowledge, ability and courage to fix Vader's armor, being the only physician there who is not afraid of Vader at all.
Their main research in the past was developing a way for helping LGBTQ+ people to have biological children based on bone marrow, a project which ended up being very succesfull.
Ed is both autistic and has ADHD, they also have a caf addiction only comparable to Admiral Piett's, and for some reason they refuse to say anything about their family or home planet besides "It is in the middle of nowhere and full of annoying individuals"
Lirian Carlmari
Tumblr media
Lirian Carlmari is a geneticist and infectologist from Onderon, she is the person responsible for their lab.
She has worked with Edgard for the longest time, assisting them in their research, they brought her with them when they got the position in the Executor, as Lirian was the most competent infectologist in the project, a speciality the Executor was lacking at the time.
She is definitely not a people person, prefering to spend most of her time in the lab, but you can get in her good side very easily with good tea.
Vanya Zaynta
Tumblr media
Vanya Zaynta is a recently graduated nurse from Chandrilla who got his position by luck, as his mother is from the ISB and is a very persuasive person. While quite competent, Vanya is clearly very inexperienced, he is sometimes seen as the child of the bunch, even if he is older than Tellon.
Vanya is a very kind person and despite the way he got his position, he is always trying his best.
Tellon Vath
Tumblr media
Tellon Vath is a anesthesia resident in the Executor, he is from Coruscant's upper class, his parents are a physician and a senator. Tel got his residency through a mix of his parents contacts and actual hard work, but he would probably had prefered to be selected to a different ship as he is VERY afraid of Vader. He is another one that survives on caf, but he prefers cold caf (Ed does not approve).
Valann Iwa
Tumblr media
Valann Iwa or Val'anniwa is the chief nurse from the Executor, he is a Clone Wars veteran from Ryloth and has worked with Vader and the 501st for the longest, to a degree he is not afraid of Vader any more than he is of Ed.
He is a little stuck in his old ways but very competent, being the one to usually treat patients who cannot be treated by med droids, Valann is usually the one that notices when Piett decides to sleep in one of the beds of the med bay. His scars are the result of the explosion of a fragmentation grenade from his time as a Republic Medic in the Clone Wars

The Orc Next Door
Take a look at my second book! It's set in an earlier year than my first, and actually on Earth, of all places. It focuses on an elf named Lirian nearing the end of her degree, without actually having declared what her degree is. Stuck in a rut, indecisive, and passively coasting while she wastes away in her parent's suburban home, all of that is thrown for a loop when an orc moves in next door, who for some reason Lirian can't take her eyes off of, kicking off a chain reaction in the cul du sac that will change Lirian's life.

Not!Character propaganda:
Tinky (Hatchetfield): He turns people into unresolvable Time Paradoxes so he can claim their souls and torment them forever in The Bastard’s Box, an unending hell dimension. seemingly the least dangerous of his brothers seen so far and yet comes off as far more sadistic and insane than them, because the way he directs his baleful attention is so random. Rather than having any agenda to destroy the world or even to enslave people, Tinky's whole goal in "Time Bastard" is just to put Ted, through a truly bizarre and convoluted Trauma Conga Line lasting 15 years and creating a massively unlikely Stable Time Loop, all for the sake of putting him through as much pain as possible before collecting him in the Bastard's Box. It's not clear what benefit he gets from filling up the Bastard's Box with tortured human souls, other than the general For the Evulz pleasure that the Lords in Black seem to live for — Tinky sneeringly calls Ted "Teddy Bear" and refers to him as "one of my toys". He takes raw, visceral pleasure from Ted’s suffering.
Xykon (Order Of The Stick): As a teenager, he killed his parents by sticking zombies on them to eat them alive (one of which is his grandmother). He teams up with Redcloak and Redcloak’s brother Right-Eye to take control of a soul-devouring abomination and rule the world, exhibiting a tendency for stuff like poisoning his own troops, using his death touch on his minions for shits and giggles, and being casually misogynistic. After killing Lilian (a Druid who venerates the natural cycle), he traps her soul in a gem for eternity and turns her corpse into a zombie “to add insult to injury.” When Right-Eye left to start a happy life on his own, Xykon impresses every goblin in the village, forces Right-Eye to burn down the buildings (most of which he built himself), and watches while Right-Eye’s family dies to adventurers he could’ve easily defeated because he found this funnier. He threatens to force Lirian’s soul watch his zombies eat her zombified body to break her sanity: “I mean, that’s just not the sort of thing you’re EVER gonna forget seeing, especially when your spirit is trapped with nothing else to think about…Could drive a soul crazy.” He lets Redloak kill his brother to stop Right-Eye from assassinating Xykon, then reveals he was in no danger whatsoever and he allowed this to happen because a) he wanted to see if Redcloak had it in him and b) it ensures Redcloak will obey Xykon because otherwise his fratricide would be for nothing, and Xykon gives him an excuse for all the horrible things he’ll do from then on. He then follows this up with a breaking speech just to rub it in: “[Winning’s] not just about raw power, it’s also about how far you’re willing to debase yourself before feeling bad […] That’s the difference between bonafide true Evil with a capital ‘E’ and your whiny, ‘evil, but for a good cause,’ crap. One gets to the butch, and one gets to be the bitch—Bitch.” Redcloak talks him into listening to battle plans with the promise of seeing one of his own minions throw acid-spitting beetles at another’s face. He goes out of his way to murder the Sapphire Guard in the worst way possible by chucking a bouncy ball with a Symbol of Insanity into their ranks, causing them to slaughter each other, which was far less practical than just blasting them from afar but more amusing for him. He tortures O-Chul for several months just for kicks, having already deduced that Redcloak was using him to stay in Azure City longer than needed but finding it fun to make O-Chul suffer. He refuses to let Redcloak regenerate his eye and tells Tsukiko to call him “Wrong-Eye,” which they’re both aware is an uncomfortable reminder of Right-Eye. He once removed a quarter of the flesh from a Halfling’s body (“Hey look, I made a three-eightling!”), which didn’t even kill her. He generally takes sadistic pleasure in ruining people’s lives just for the hell of it, because he basically wants to make sure nobody can tell him “no” like a petty child.
AM (I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream): For the past 109 years, he has been torturing the last five humans on Earth in the depths of his complex. It is brilliantly intelligent and wields unimaginable power, but because from its very core it was designed as a tool for war and destruction, it is unable to use its enormous potential for anything constructive. AM is painfully aware of this, and it is an endless source of frustration, self-loathing and hatred towards humans for making him this way; he outright states that his utterly ballistic hatred for all human life is what allowed him to thrive in tormenting the protagonists for over a century, and the only thing he seems to enjoy is torture. All of AM's games are Unwinnable by Design, either because he's ensured that the scenario is tailored to the player's Fatal Flaw, or because he's given them almost nothing to work with. In the video game, he subjects the humans to ironic hells like burning Nimdok in an oven (because he betrayed his Jewish heritage to work with Nazis) and puts its five victims in cyberspace, tormenting them with images of monsters and supernatural entities; for example, Ellen has phobias of tight spaces and yellow because she was raped by a man in yellow in an elevator, so her scenario takes place in an Egyptian tomb full of yellow objects, and if she doesn’t fight back against the yellow-clothed apparition AM creates it will re-enact her rape. In the short story, he lets them travel for thousands of miles to get to the ice caverns to obtain cans of food because AM keeps them at starvation point and only feeds them disgusting food…and it turns out there really are cans, but nothing to open them with, and the whole thing was just to fuck with them. After Ted kills the other humans, he becomes the sole target of AM’s torture; he is turned into an amorphous creature unable to harm itself, without a mouth, and has his perception of time continuously accelerated and decelerated, with his only hope for escape being when AM finally stops functioning, potentially thousands of years later. I wasn't really expecting AM to make it into this one considering how far he got in Extinction, but I firmly believe he fit this category better because of the ridiculous lengths he goes to in order to hurt people.
The Dazzlings (MLP): Ancient merhorse sirens who use Mind-Control Music to create hatred and conflict between other beings, spurring their victims to fight with each other and feeding off the negative energy produced in the process. Banished to Earth and trapped in human bodies, they arrange for a Battle of the Bands at Canterlot High in the hopes of finding the source of the magic they felt and using it to regain their full power.
The Flagellant (Darkest Dungeon): His class description from the first game is “If there was ever such a thing as ‘weaponized suffering’, then the Flagellant would be the term made flesh. This man is unique among the various classes in the sense that he thrives on the ruin of his mind and body […] He will stand like a wall between his comrades and his foes […] acting like a magnet for all harm that may come their way. His power lies within the martyrdom, and it is something that transcends physical laws: every action of violence that lands on his tortured corpus creates not an equal, but a far more potent reaction. He converts damage in either powerful healing for his allies, or horrifying punishment for his enemies in the form of insanely powerful bleeding attacks.” He loves taking and inflicting pain, specializing in afflicting enemies with bleed using his flail/whip thing and becoming “Rapturous” when sufficiently stressed, causing him to indiscriminately attack friend and foe. The second game details his backstory: he was a beggar who was beaten by drunk men, when “a feverish crimson eclipsed his vision. In pain... there was power. He rose above his panting assailants, and, reveling in the marks of their sin, forgave them their trespasses.” He then became a torturer for the Church of the Light: ”There, he inflicted death by slow, delicious degrees - each crack of the lash an honour, a gift, a morbid sacrament. But his zeal proved too ardent, his brethren too timid - they cast him out, rendered him once more unto the streets.” The Flagellant is apparently confirmed to have been the one torturing The Vestal in her backstory, but it’s implied that the “zeal” in question may have been his fervent desire for experiencing pain, which eventually caused him to injure himself badly enough that he’s supposed to be dead; instead he literally fought off Death--”None shall claim me 'til I summit the peak of agony!” Now he’s basically a rotting corpse with toxic blood continuing his holy mission of taking and inflicting pain: “Once more he wandered, ravenous for fresh suffering and delighting in its novelty and excess. Offering himself to blade and talon alike, he became an icon writ in flesh, a living prayer to whatever gods would turn an ear. Undying, he savoured his delicious declension. An eternity of pain and rot. Heaven on earth.”

Whats your thoughts on the Order of the scribble's relationahip with their leader and Paladin Soon?
I was originally pretty lukewarm on the order, but the more we learn about them, more and more we see a picture of a group where pretty much everyone to some degree or another seems to have scapegoated Soon as the reason for all their problems.
Its an interesting take on a true paladin, who believed in the cause and was willing to give everything fot it, but nobody else understood him, or respected his dedication, because they needed an outlet for their anger, and Soon, stoic, dutiful and dedicated paladin that he was, served as the silent magnet for all their frustrations.
Soon certainly was not withouth his own flaws, and ultimately the order he founded would lay the groundwork for his own destruction, but I love how each of the other scribblers(Other than lirian anyway... The lady really needed more fleshing out with her relationships) saw what they wanted to see in him to justify their anger.
Durokan, a man who believed in developments, research and personal relationship far more than causes, saw a man who could only be doing the mission because of his anger for his dead wife, and not a man who genuinely believed in his mission(Which is ironic given Durokan ended up marching to his doom due to a pique of blind rage due to his own slain lover) because he was a good man.
Girard was a paranoid wreck with a messiah complex who could not get over himself regarding the fsct he was not in charge, and had such strong delusional distrust for authority and trusting other people that he could not fathom that Soon would never betray him, or his cause due to oaths he himself would break in a hearbeat(And in another case of irony, he would create a far more fanathical cult of personality dedicated around him personally than soon ever did).
Serini is absolutely pissed about the fact that Soon refused to play to her tunes, because he actually respected both the letter, and the spirit of the oath she convinced him to sign, as well as having deep personal issues about the fact that Soon by all metrics seems to have been the most powerful member of the group, given the way she takes such stupid delight in putting down the might of the surviving Azure Paladins.(the irony here being that she is far and away the weakest member of the scribbles, yet delights in tearing others down).
Its an interesting look into how people rather than working out their own issues, will often instead seek out a target that they can direct all their own flaws and insecurities upon, because that is so much easier than actual self reflection... Honestly it reminds me a lot about Belkar's relationship with V, especially pre-character development late in the series.
But whats your read on it all?
That's an interesting angle. I hadn't considered something like projection, but you raise some really good points about both the psychology and the dynamics with the modern Scribbles. Certainly, the Order of the Stick has been expecting to find true heroes and consistently been stymied- although in the case of Soon's Gate, it was more about Soon's heir failing to live up to the hype, rather than Soon himself. So perhaps the story is making even great use out of the out-of-universe reputation of paladins as a class than we realized.
This latest update got me to look back the original story of the Order of the Scribble, and I couldn't help but notice two things:
The first is the reminder of the Sapphire Guard's oath, so "Soon's support" could only have helped after the destruction of Soon's gate, so it's support that only could have come when things are at their most dire.
The second is that Serini at one point considered getting some classes in paladin- but was it out of admiration for him, or was she just putting an oblivious face on another way to needle him?
Combined with your analysis, I can't help but be reminded of Miko- both her inability to really fit in with the Order of the Stick and the fandom's reaction to her (as I was recently reminded of). If Soon indeed was turned into a scapegoat by the other Scribbles, I wonder if it's because he held himself apart from the rest of them and perhaps was as abrasive as Miko at one point. He's genuinely sympathetic to her when they talk, and perhaps the reason he can speak so eloquently about redemption is because he had to undergo it himself? Perhaps he really did have some flaws that created a rift with his compatriots, albeit they blew them completely out of proportion in the decades after they parted, and their separation meant his growth never was seen.
One of the reasons I wonder about this is the general theme of the comic about evolution/growth, and perhaps Soon himself is the only Scribble who was able to do so. But the story has also hinted at something more being behind Kraagor's death, since the Sticks know about it but Roy continues to wonder what really happened to break up the Scribbles, so maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree and there's something a bit more mundane in play. After all, as you note, Soon and his Sapphire Guard were very flawed, both with their destroyer coming from their own ranks and the whole thing with the goblin genocides and the legacy of Redcloak.
I think it was mentioned at some point that a prequel book was planned for the Scribbles, but couldn't be released until a certain point in the story was reached? I wonder if it has to wait for something close to the ending. Considering how great 'How the Paladin Got His Scar' turned out, I'd be happy to see how 'late career' Rich Burlew pulls all this together.
(As a random aside, wow does the GitP site need a makeover. The news blog is the front page, but it's been two years since there was news. OotS is the only comic, but it's off in a sidebar like it's one of several. The whole thing needs to be turned upside down and the comic made front'n'center.)
