The Proto-Germanic word *gahlaibōn, 'someone you share your bread with', was borrowed into Latin in a special way: its parts were translated individually. This is called a loan translation or a calque. The result was compāniō. This word became copain and compagnon in French and then companion in English. Here's more.

This came up on youtube so I was able to relisten and confirm without having to replay the game- Nanami, who famously did not know the english word cow and so did not know that a cowbell is a bell for cows, knows the English word "lesbian". This implies so much.

Have we talked about how Twilight went from "Anya will go back to the orphanage I picked her up from once the mission is done"
to "I'll write a cover letter so she can go to a better orphanage and be happier"
to "I'll make sure both my fake daughter and fake wife have a good life once the mission is done and I have to part with them"
because I think that's v important

I prefer “Mary and John were normal people” so so so SO much more, however,
Time traveling Dick Grayson: I kinda… don’t join the family business? I mean I still use everything you taught me! Just for vigilantism instead?
Mary: I’m… not sure I’m surprised or not
Dick: really?
Mary: well… you always did love Robin Hood. I should have known you would try your hand at the whole “steal from the rich, give to the poor thing.” I mean, you are my son after all.
Dick: um.
Mary: you stick it to the man. Right, Dick?
Dick: uhh well you see-
John: it’s okay sweetheart, we support you as long as you’re happy, right dear?
Mary: oh of course I am! I would still love you even if you became… oh I don’t know what, John help me out
John: a walking corpse enslaved to the bourgeoisie whom’s every emotion and individuality has been torn away leaving nothing but a shell who knows only violence and obedience
Mary: right- what?
Dick: yeah I’ve been meaning to ask-
John: -about Aunt Harriet? Because I’ve been wanting to ask about what Aunt Harriet’s been up to!

i am. perplexed as to why one of my libraries is suddenly adding vast numbers of spanish translations of english books to their ebook collections, when they do not have the english versions of those books, and by vast numbers i mean both a wide range of titles and also sometimes absurd numbers of copies like 100 copies when they usually only have 1-3 ebook copies of most other books
is there some kind of bug in their ordering system? what is happening

So uh, helps if I actually post stuff doesn’t it?
Here’s my D&D PC, I joined an ongoing session run by a coworker of mine and @moveslikebucky’s, it’s been ongoing for about a quarter of a year and they joined a couple sessions before I got over getting in my own head. Saffi’s a Fighter/Ranger, pretty blatantly inspired by pulpy adventure archaeologists/treasure hunters. And yes I used one of HF’s weird scifi guns to stand in for a hand crossbow cuz I wanted something a bit more like the OSS’s Little John crossbow than the actual hand crossbows, it makes sense in the context of the setting given that it’s, like, a homebrew dieselpunkish take on Forgotten Realms instead of Forgotten Realms proper.
I have some more dicking around on HF designs to post, about half of which are actually a year and a half old but never got added to my long reblog chain so I’m slapping those on a separate post.

This panel makes NO GODDAMN SENSE with the word "sensei" translated to "master" in English. Yes, it's a very technical translation but the word "master" is not used in this way at all and holds a different connotation. Equally strange would be translating it to "teacher" as English speakers don't directly address someone as "Teacher". The closest equivalent I can think of for directly calling someone "sensei" is calling a college professor "Professor" but even then, it's not an exact match.
Honestly, this is a good example of why they should have just left "sensei" untranslated and just put like, an asterisk between panels with a definition like
*sensei means "teacher"

okay i Finally feel like i have the time and energy to get back to genshin
it’s a small thing early on in the tcg grand prix thing but i thought it was interesting
so when kaeya greets charlotte, he says “enchantée”
which is initially in line with him being a smooth talking kind of guy
but since charlotte is from fontaine, which is mostly based on france, he’s probably just greeting her in her national language, which is really thoughtful and respectful of him
i just thought that was neat :0

I know people aren't at fault here but damn am I annoyed when people use the loan word leitmofis. Not because of its meaning but because its spelling has been morphed to fit English and it just looks so off to my native German brain.
In German, it is Leitmotiv (singular) or Leitmotive (plural). I get the s plural but why did you fuckers exchange poor v for that lazy sucker f?

Ngl I think it's so funny when people assume post op trans men are subpar of exclusively bottoms, i mean if the advancement of science were that great (the awkward part is...technically they could be...and are...sometimes but it's an extremely experimental thing but yea, it's technically possible to get taller but i wouldn't advice unless you really want it that bad (I could have had access to that kind of shit, but...a tes risques et périls, comme j'connais quelqu'un qui a tenté le coup pis...erm. ouin. Ça marche, mais comme t'as pu trop envie de marcher pour une secousse après (no joke, mais ça coute cher en criss pis c'pas moé qui réfère) , so yea...i do kinda thrive from being reduced to some "can't do anything bottom", because...it's always so validating when people assume people can't do things they can, ugh.
