How do you draw Abodes Dreads/Braids? I'm a black creator and still (embarrassingly) struggle with them in the arcana style. (And in general XD) the way you draw her is gorgeous. And I must know the magic you poses.

Nothing to be embarrassed for! Unfortunately there's not much reference for black hair in the Arcana, so we all have to guess. I'd highly recommend looking at @kianamaiart and Simkray's hair brushes for other examples of stylising black hair (if anyone has examples of black hair in angular art styles, please share!!)

Dreads and braids are both segmented styles which makes their basic construction similar, however dreads are stiffer and hang less than braids, which are quite heavy

She usually pulls her hair back so I only have to pay attention to the hairline, but I draw each dread as a somewhat stiff tube. Where it connects to the scalp I feather in short, fine lines for the edges/thin hair that's attached to the skin.

To show the twisted texture of dreads, I add curved lines along each one. For me, this is a good balance of detail for the style (though I can still get tired of lineart -_-)

Then, as a final detail, I give Abosede imperfect ends, topping most dreads off with a thin twist. This is optional as some dreads don't have this.

Then finally, for colour. I take reference for how they render ropes and add a series of light lines along each dread. Dreads don't reflect much light, so these are pretty faint.

For some braided hairstyles, you just replace the tubes I use for dreads with a simple plait pattern (as seen in Lucio's masquerade outfit). If you're aiming for cornrows, instead of the segments, draw the tubes along the scalp with sharp ends. Then fill them with a plait pattern. For extra detail, you can hatch lines in between the cornrows where the hair is pulled into the braid.

Braids have stronger highlights than dreads, and I tend to dot them in the centre of each part.

I have emotions about Quinlan’s hair and his position as a shadow so here’s a cute idea for you: he has a Padawan braid, but he gets it twisted inside one of his dreads so it’s not showing, but when he’s home in the temple, he takes it out of that dread and if he’s being fancy about it, he uses it as a hair tie to wrap around a hair tie and puts a bunch of beads in it. This would be more of that ‘hiding in plain sight’ training though, so if anyone sees him with his braid out of his twists, he just says it’s a fancy idea he had for once.

about reth's hairstyle, it's not locs guys alhdg it's a somewhat fantasy-esque hairstyle where his straight hair is long but twisted back and tied to keep it in place. we don't see it in the official art, but his in game model has multiple hair ties throughout the length of the pieces to keep his hair in that style. this hairstyle is doable in real life if you use that many ties

obviously these models don't show every single strand of hair but the official art backs up the fact that it's straight (note the individual strands that are loose)

you can see here that it's straight hair just twisted into individual pieces. you can also see in both the model and art that the end of his hair goes straight down and has clear separated strands. it wouldn't do this if his hair was locd (you'll notice that sifuu and hassian have blunt, round ends to their locs)

his in game model does have some pieces that don't have any ties so it's possible that those are locs but honestly, i doubt it. i'm gonna go out on a limb and say it has more to do with the hair being in the back and not needing as much detail. or the devs didn't want clipping issues since the back pieces are grouped so close together and his ties come up quite a bit. either way, his hair is most likely straight and just in weird ponytails basically. and if it is meant to be locs, then they're modeled badly aldhg especially in comparison to hassian and sifuu

Different hairstyles for Jake. First one is straight from the book, the rest are how I imagine he looked before prison. Maybe afterwards too. Dreadlocks heavily inspired by @orithereticent ‘s version of him. Feeling guilty for resharing so much old fanart and not posting enough new ones. Enjoy!
