Notes on oak

Oak enjoyed a lot of reverence among the pre-Christian Slavs, especially the larger and more ancient trees. The main sanctuary of Vagrians (a Western Slavic tribe) was a sacred grove of oaks near Starigrad/Oldenburg, devoted to a little known deity Prove/Prone, which served as a place of worship and legal proceedings. A giant oak tree grew on the island of Saint Gregory (Khortycia), under which, according to Constantine Porphyrogenitus, the merchants of Rus’ made sacrifices. Another giant oak grew next to the temple of Triglav in Stettin. Traces of yet another have been found on the top of the Krakus Mound. Saxo Grammaticus claimed the image of seven-headed god of the Rani Rugiaevit was carved out of oak wood. Oak is of course also associated with the Thunderer, in Slavic context usually understood to be Perun. Countless other mentions of oak trees connected to Slavic cults can be found.

In many places people believed that harming or destroying those great ancient oaks would bring misfortune upon their community. In Kalisz region plagues were attributed to cutting down of a sacred oak (frequently a tree on which a shrine was hung). Near Nowy Targ legend held that whoever breaks a branch of great oak in Niedzica will surely die. 

Oak is viewed as a quintessentially masculine tree, frequently paired with feminine linden. Oak or linden trees would often be planted by the house, to protect it and it’s inhabitants from misfortune. Both were also viewed as particularly well suited for religious purposes.

Characterized by hard and resistent wood the oak became a symbol of physical strength and invincibility as well as royal power and life. Poles used to bake bread on oak leaves, believing that whoever eats it will have oaken strength. Oak trees were used in healing rituals in which the illness could be passed onto the tree and defeated by it. In many folk tales oak was associated with raising people from the dead.

The connection between oak and thunder is obvious and apparent. Oak branches could be stuck into the thatched roofs or walls of the houses to keep the thunder away from them and prevent subsequent fires. For the same reason oak wood would be burned during thunderstorms.

The wood and leaves of an oak are a great remedy against witchcraft. Fumigations of smoke from oak leaves are believed to work well against devilish powers and cleanse air from illenesses. Oak stakes (along those made of hawthorn and aspen) were considered an excellent weapon for combating vampires, and they were sometimes pre-emptively driven into graves of hanged and drowned men, so that they couldn’t rise again and harm the community (Hrubieszów).

On the other hand oak wasn’t seen as completely benign. Witches gathered for Sabbath not only on Bald Mountains but also in oak groves. They had the ability to curse a household by sticking an oak branch into one of the house walls and ordering the family to wither as the branch itself withers. Lone oak trees growing in the fields of by the road could be seen as inhabited by the penitent spirit of a dead sinner.

Overall every oak could be seen as a dwelling place for spirits - good or bad.

In many regions of Poland, from Greater Poland to Eastern Borderlands acorns were used in fortune telling to predict the success of the next harvest, the circumstances of the coming year and potential misfortunes that might befall the community.

I got my hair cut the other day and of course I had to draw the dca boys running a hair salon:

Sun would be so effortlessly charming. Always chatting away with customers, explaining each product he uses and how to best maintain and style their hair.

Moon I can see being popular with the less chattier customers (like me) but over time they begin to open up. I imagine he hums while working. Otherwise, he's all ears for the newest gossip.

Also I love the popular headcanon that the dca can speak other languages, so I can imagine them being a hit with the aunties.

Eclipse works there too! Haven't decided if it would be canon or fanon Eclipse, though I really like the image of 4-armed Eclipse working on 2 clients at once (plus, the nickname Clip is perfect for this scenario)

of course they're great with kids! They'd be able to console kids that get scared of getting their hair cut. Sun would do a little trick and tell them how good and brave they are all the way through. y/n works at the hair salon as a part-timer and does tasks around the salon like sweeping, arranging bookings, washing hair, etc. They don't really care too much about their own hair, but the boys are always offering to style it, dye it, braid it. With y/n's permission, the boys always toy with their hair—patting it, combing their hands through it, brushing it over y/n's ear, ruffling it.

When the app tries to make you robo-scab

When we talk about the abusive nature of gig work, there’s some obvious targets, like algorithmic wage discrimination, where two workers are paid different rates for the same job, in order to trick occasional gig-workers to give up their other sources of income and become entirely dependent on the app:

When it comes to the epic fight over who technology acts for and against, we need a diversity of tactics, backstopped by tech operated by and for its users — and by laws that protect workers and the public. That dynamic is in sharp focus in UNITE Here Local 11’s strike against Orange County’s Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa.

The UNITE Here strike turns on the usual issues like a living wage (hotel staff are paid so little they have to rent rooming-house beds by the shift, paying for the right to sleep in a room for a few hours at a time, without any permanent accommodation). They’re also seeking health-care and pensions, so they can be healthy at work and retire after long service. Finally, they’re seeking their employer’s support for LA’s Responsible Hotels Ordinance, which would levy a tax on hotel rooms to help pay for hotel workers’ housing costs (a hotel worker who can’t afford a bed is the equivalent of a fast food worker who has to apply for food stamps):

But the Marriott — which is owned by the University of California and managed by Aimbridge Hospitality — has refused to bargain, walking out negotiations.

But the employer didn’t walk out over wages, benefits or support for a housing subsidy. They walked out when workers demanded that the scabs that the company was trying to hire to break the strike be given full time, union jobs.

These aren’t just any scabs, either. They’re predominantly Black workers who rely on the $700m Instawork app for gigs. These workers are being dispatched to cross the picket line without any warning that they’re being contracted as strikebreakers. When workers refuse the cross the picket and join the strike, Instawork cancels all their shifts and permanently blocks them from new jobs.

This is a new, technologically supercharged form of illegal strikebreaking. It’s one thing for a single boss to punish a worker who refuses to scab, but Instawork acts as a plausible-deniability filter for all the major employers in the region. Like the landlord apps that allow landlords to illegally fix rents by coordinating hikes, Instawork lets bosses illegally collude to rig wages by coordinating a blocklist of workers who refuse to scab:

The racial dimension is really important here: the Marriott has a longstanding de facto policy of refusing to hire Black workers, and whenever they are confronted with this, they insist that there are no qualified Black workers in the labor pool. But as soon as the predominantly Latino workforce struck, Marriott discovered a vast Black workforce that it could coerce into scabbing, in collusion with Instawork.

Now, all of this isn’t just sleazy, it’s illegal, a violation of Section 7 of the NLRB Act. Historically, that wouldn’t have mattered, because a string of presidents, R and D, have appointed useless do-nothing ghouls to run the NLRB. But the Biden admin, pushed by the party’s left wing, made a string of historic, excellent appointments, including NLRB General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo, who has set her sights on punishing gig work companies for flouting labor law:

UNITE HERE 11 has brought a case to the NLRB, charging the Instawork, the UC system, Marriott, and Aimbridge with violating labor law by blackmailing gig workers into crossing the picket line. The union is also asking the NLRB to punish the companies for failing to protect workers from violent retaliation from the wealthy hotel guests who have punched them and screamed epithets at them. The hotel has refused to identify these thug guests so that the workers they assaulted can swear out complaints against them.

Writing about the strike for Jacobin, Alex N Press tells the story of Thomas Bradley, a Black worker who was struck off all Instawork shifts for refusing to cross the picket line and joining it instead:

Bradley’s case is exhibit A in the UNITE HERE 11 case before the NLRB. He has a degree in culinary arts, but racial discrimination in the industry has kept him stuck in gig and temp jobs ever since he graduated, nearly a quarter century ago. Bradley lived out of his car, but that was repossessed while he slept in a hotel room that UNITE HERE 11 fundraised for him, leaving him homeless and bereft of all his worldly possessions.

With UNITE HERE 11’s help, Bradley’s secured a job at the downtown LA Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites, a hotel that has bargained with the workers. Bradley is using his newfound secure position to campaign among other Instawork workers to convince them not to cross picket lines. In these group chats, Jacobin saw workers worrying “that joining the strike would jeopardize their standing on the app.”

Call It Through as a Crew: Alleviating Some Phone Anxiety

Hello everyone! So as you probably already know, there has been a recent call to make, well, calls! Another member of our crew figured out that the max customer service line (855-442-6629) is a very effective way to get our feedback heard, as the feedback gets transcribed and shared to a multitude of teams.

I already sort of briefly shared my experience on this post, but I wanted to go a bit more in detail to offer some solace for those who are also phone averse, as well as share resources and get the word out even more.

And y'all, when I say I'm phone averse, I mean PHONE AVERSE LMAO; MY FEET WERE SWEATING JSDKLS LIKE I WAS FIGHTING FOR MY LIFE. So I totally, TOTALLY get it, and am here to walk you through everything in detail!

So I called that number and was on a brief hold--probably like 5 minutes or so. The customer service representative (Margot my bestie Margot) then picked up, and asked for the email associated with my account as well as my full name.

I was extremely extremely worried and anxious about being bothersome/annoying the person on the other end and just being able to feel it in their tone, so I was shivering and sweating all the while. But then when she asked for my reason for calling, I said, "Oh, it's actually in regard to some feedback," and she went, "Is it for Our Flag Means Death?"

And we both laughed, and I was like, "Haha how did you knooooowww?" And she laughed some more and was like, "Let me tell you, I have never seen anything like this in all my years working here. We are getting so many calls. It's incredible."

And by that point, a large weight was off my chest because she was friendly, I was friendly, EVERYONE WAS FRIENDLY.

I laughed and told her that we were a very passionate and concerned bunch, and she told me that she thought that was so cool and also super important. She then allowed me to tell her my feedback, and she transcribed it as I talked. This was the little script I had prepared in case you'd like to reference it:

I just wanted to call and express my disappointment, dissatisfaction, and concern with the recent cancellation of Our Flag Means Death on Max. As a queer person myself, this show has a tremendous impact on me. And in a climate where so many diverse and LGBT-centric shows have unjust ends, I’d just like to express my wish for reconsideration, and just the hope that…Max will allow LGBT stories like ours to live and flourish. And I’m really worried about there being some kind of…homophobic angle to the cancellation, so it would mean the world to myself and so many others if the decision could be reversed, and we could get our third and final season.

I went a little graver than originally planned, because I saw talks that taking a DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) angle, as well a "hey I'm a queer person and this feels like a decision made for a nefarious purpose" angle, are supposedly more likely to be noted.

Anyway, she allowed me to say my piece and wrote it all down, and then actually stayed with me on the line to chat a bit more. So, the phone call didn't feel rushed or anxious which was SO so huge to me; it felt far more conversational.

She was like, "I don't want to toot our little horn or anything, but Max really takes all this feedback into consideration. It will be passed to the properties team (or something equivalent, I can't remember the EXACT term she used), and they're in charge of what goes on Max and why. So, I really feel like you guys have a fighting chance with these efforts."

And of course I was thanking her profusely for telling me all of this, and for listening; polite menace, that will be my brand!

But man, the coolest part of all? She told me that she was POC, and a queer person herself, and that this was all so cool and so amazing to see. She applauded our efforts, and expressed interested in the show. I laughed and said, "Well uhhhh I might have a BIT of a bias, but I cannot recommend it enough."

And then she proceeded to tell me that it might be even MORE effective to hit from different angles. So, keep calling (they're available 24/7), and also keep utilizing the online feedback form. Basically just keep FLOODING them with how much this means to us and why.

I then expressed a lot of gratitude, we exchanged pleasantries, and there was a brief survey at the end. I don't think the survey is necessary, so you can probably hang up by this point, but I stuck around for a little more horsepower. It tells you to rate the customer service on a scale of 1-5 with 5 being the highest, and you know I gave my bestie a fivvvveee. It also tells you to press 1/2 if your issue was resolved or not. I said HELL TO THE NO, DUDE SJDKLS. And THEN, it asks you to leave a voice message after the tone describing your experience. I said that I was with the customer service representative Margot, and that she was extremely friendly and helpful, but that the issue at hand will not be resolved until Max reserves their decision about the recent cancellation of Our Flag Means Death (I'm also always saying the show title in full as opposed to just the acronym, just for more OOMPH).

...And thennnn I proceed to shake it/shriek it all off LMAO.

Buuuut yeah! Probably took a total of 10 minutes or so. @xoxoemynn also shared with me that she's seen people say that these customer service representatives likely deal with older folks who need help with technology, and are subsequently stunned (and maybe even excited) to talk to younger people who just want to voice concerns instead of chew the poor customer service people out lol! And Margot also mentioned that they were eager to take calls no matter what, so as long as we're all polite and succinct, I don't think we'll have to worry about a very tense and awkward call.

I hope this alleviates some fear a bit! We got this, crew. We're doing so, so much. And it seems like it's being heard all over the place; it also seems like we've got so many people on our side, too. Big big hugs, and I'll share the necessary resources once more-

It's honesty sad how you all got surprised finding out the demon of lust advocates for consent. Reminds me of a telenovela where the protagonist was the stereotypical "ugly but smart" girl and her dad was constantly over protecting from men and the "joke" was basically "ohh get it? Cause she's ugly so no one would abuse her lol" (you can tell it was written by middled age men) Stop it. Sexual abuse is not an act of lust, attraction or desire. Noc Świętojańska - St. John’s Eve

Gather your herbs on the Eve of St. John - it’s a long standing tradition that herbs gathered on this day possess greater potency, especially in matters of healing, magic and eroticism, and they are used in many other customs connected with Kupała. Herbs gathered after Eve of St. John were considered much less powerful (witches steal their power… or you know, piss and spit on them).

The herbs commonly harvested on that day vary by the region but some popular choices are mugwort, St. John’s wort, fern, nettle, plantago, mullein, branches of oak, ash, hazel, beech, black alder, maple and any thorns or spiky coniferous branches.

Many of those herbs (thorns, nettles, wormwood, mugwort, birch) would be used on the same evening to start a celebratory fire (sobótka) with protective properties. The remaining herbs and tree branches were used to decorate the house (usually walls and the roof) in order to shield it from evil forces and witches and ensure good luck. Wayside shrines and figures of Saints would also be decorated. Playing a defensive role, needly conifers, thistles and stinging nettle were favored in some areas. Nettle could be scattered by the windows.

Mugwort played a very significant role in most midsummer celebrations. In Polish folklore it’s viewed as one of the best remedies against witches and witchcraft. For this reason in some regions doors and fences were woven out of mugwort. During St. John’s Eve it was worn by women around their waist and placed above the doors or on the roofs (though not solely for protection - it’s supposed to draw the perfect husbands for the girls living in the house). Mugwort and burdock could be thrown into wells to protect and purify the water. Gathered on St. John’s Eve mugwort was to be carried in a pouch untill the next St. John’s Eve to protect the owner from any harmful magic. Fumigations of mugwort were thought to keep thunder strikes away from the house.

Plantago blessed on St. John’s Eve was believed to be an excellent remedy for countless ailments and was used in many forms in various treatments.

Wreaths commonly worn by girls during Saint John’s Eve could be made of periwinkle, rue, guelder-rose, buttercup, lemon thyme, tansy, lovage and many other; generally fragrant herbs with romantic and erotic associations. Ideally the herbs for the wreath were stolen from the fields belonging to the family of the boy the girl wanted to marry. In some regions they were also believed to protect the wearer from disease. Oskar Kolberg noted that at least in Lesser Poland the wreaths weren’t particularly big having roughly eight centimeters in diameter. They were tied to tiny planks on which a candle was placed and then floated on the water. The wreaths could also contain little pieces of paper containing short rhymes expressing girls’ wishes for love and matrimony.

In the region of Opoczno women used wreaths in another form of fortune-telling They'd stand in front of a linden tree, with their backs to it and threw their wreaths behind them. If a wreath was caught on a linden branch the woman was sure to get married that year.

Because 1) honestly she loves the man but FUCK it's so annoying. She'd take a bitey toddler patient actively throwing a tantrum over Bruce Wayne any day, I mean she understands nervous patients because the man is so damn eccentric to boot she's never sure what kind of response to prepare for,

and 2) look, dental records are so very, very specific. Like ,"legally acceptable to identify the body" kind of specific. So she ALSO would absolutely know that Bruce Wayne very much is the Batman, so it would be the same level of trolling as the Wayne kids.

So, first off, this is not an attempt to kink shame (dubcon and noncon are great!) but I do keep seeing a thing in fics (I do NOT see this irl in kink spaces nearly as often) where like. A character will interrupt the flow of the scene to check consent

And I don't mean in an "are we still green?" Or "what's your color?" kind of way, but I mean. The author has tagged the fic and indicated via prose and/or author notes that they are doing their Due Diligence to make sure this fic is Righteously Consensual from top to bottom, No Question About It

And a character will ask for full sexual consent either directly or indirectly or renegotiate the boundaries of the kinks being practiced AFTER the sex acts have already begun.

Here's the thing: horny brain isn't great at making decisions! irl in kink spaces, there's often a lot of emphasis on negotiating BEFORE the scene begins, perhaps even with a space between negotiation and the scene if it's with a new/unfamiliar partner (maybe it's a few minutes while things are set up, maybe the partners negotiate a day or more in advance! It depends!), and not changing the parameters of the scene after someone is already horny or god forbid already in subspace.

Again, these are perfectly fine rules to break in fiction, when the author is aware of it (most characters are not going to be fully familiar with safe, sane, consensual practices and the traffic light system, nor would we want them to be!) but I'm increasingly finding fics where the author DOESN'T seem aware, which takes a normal fic (in-character, with reasonable but perhaps even somewhat dubious practices, which the author isn't emphasizing or preaching about) into Red Flag Territory (a character, OOC, yanking me out of the scene to behave like a PSA about consent instead of conforming to the horny tone of the scene, and perpetuating unsafe practices anyway)

If you are writing a master manipulator or someone who wants to have a gotcha, you totally said it was okay on a character they are trying to bone (which is well in the realm of non/dubcon) that's fine! This PSA is not aimed at you. But if you are trying to write someone who Cares Strongly About Consent, then perhaps be more aware of when is an appropriate time to escalate the situation (sexually speaking) or ask for consent!

there used to be a fairly popular ot3 trope in the s2 hiatus (I think, or maybe it was literally just one fic I really liked so I'm misremembering, lol) where Jamie would get sick/injured and end up in hospital but he still had Keeley down as her emergency contact, so her (with an angry Roy in tow) would show up at the hospital and become his (on Roy's part, reluctant) caregivers until they all fell in love. I think the idea sort of went by the wayside because it relied on roy/keeley already being together and Jamie eventually joining their relationship, which is no longer the standard route to ot3. But! I think we should consider bringing it back.
