Do you have any ideas/tips/tricks on running a campaign with (former?) bandit-likes as the protagonists? Inspired by your deep dive on the archetype, kinda had ideas of 'main prophecied adventurers are slain by the party, have to take over for the prophecy so as the world wont explode', but if you have alternate ideas or ways to spruce it up, super open.

Adventure: Where the Low Road Leads
Through unworthy means the sword has come to you, and with it you grip a destiny that some part of you knows is too glorious for your dirty hands. You can't help but think perhaps this is your chance to be remembered for anything other than an ignoble end.
The Sword can come into possession of the party in any number of ways:
As the original asker suggested, it would be a great opening for an evil or dark-grey aligned party to pull it from the bodies of a group of adventures or bountyhunters who were hired to stamp them out. If I were running this as the start of a campaign I'd have the story pick up shortly after the fight and subsequent looting has taken place, to ensure your anti-heroes are set on the right course.
Alternatively the sword could very easily be found in a treasure horde, picked off a corpse lost in a the wilderness, or bestowed upon them by some wellmeaning patron.
All that matters is that the sword finds them, and then shortly after that the dreams start: Pitched battle in darkened corridors, a few valiant warriors standing against an onslaught of robed figures and formless horrors, warriors bearing the same amber and knot design that decorates the hilt of the sword's crossguard. The last echoes of a desperate struggle.
After one or two of these visions a strange messenger arrives: Jott, a boisterous homunculus delivering a greeting and a communication stone from his master Telbhar the Wizard. Mostly bound to his far off tower these days, Telbhar is relieved beyond measure that he managed to tack down whoever was in possession of the sword, as it is the keystone in a great undertaking he has been involved in since his youth.
As Telbhar explains, back when he was but an apprentice he and his teacher served a now extinct group known as the Order Fulgoric, who battled many evils in their day but perished preventing an incursion from an unknown otherworldly entity. The blade, Sequester, was crafted to shut out that entity forever, but it was lost in the final rout against the entity's cultists and though the ritual of its summoning was disrupted, the entity ended up half in, half out of our reality, bleeding out its corruption into the world.
Challenges & Complications:
As you may have guessed, Telbhar is not being completely forward with the truth. He was in fact one of the cultists trying to summon the otherworldly entity on the day the Fulgoric order made their final march, and though he fled while his fellow acolytes were being slaughtered he retained enough of their knowledge to reconstruct the ritual many years later. It didn't matter, the Order had succeeded in trapping the entity between worlds and the only way to un-trap it was lost with the sword. Telbhar spent decades searching for it... only for it to resurface in the party's possession. Now he either needs to convince them to bring it to him, or find a means of picking it off their corpses.
The entity the cultists were attempting to summon was a powerful quori dreamspirit known as Uaxt, which was spoken of by ancient sources as a thing capable of granting wishes. Called "Yearning beyond reach" by those that studied it in the past, the entity's true power was in mass delusion, creating waking dreams that would seep across entire kingdoms like a plague. While its body remains entwined through the depths of the dungeon, flash fossilized by the energies of botched planear travel, its mind is imprisoned in the blade, slowly taking root in the party's minds as it uses their dreams to reconstitute itself.
Consider introducing Telbhar when the party is in a deep bind, most in need of wizardly council. It should not be directly related to the sword, alternatively, if your party ends up wanting to seek out a lorekeeper of some kind you may consider introducing Telbhar first and have him ask them to seek the sword in return for helping them with their current woes.

In the Beginning (Lore Concept)
In the beginning, there was emptiness. Within the emptiness, there were only two things: Time, and Void. Time flowed ever freely while the Void maintains emptiness of things. Then with Time, things start to appear. They occupy the emptiness with its presence causing the Void to recede. As more things kept popping into existence, the Void was angered for the loss over its domain and sought to destroy it all. Then just like everything, a guardian was made to watch over creation, this was the Mithel Celestia.
Tasked with guarding the realms from the Void's influence, they created the Reality Helix: an ancient artifact that has the power to keep the Void at bay. After the matrix was made, they split their soul into multiple entities to help watch over the different realms, these are the Lorekeepers.
The Lorekeepers are an order of beings tasked with watching the realms. Overtime, some Lorekeepers have gained the power for creation and have started expanding the realms with new dimensions, these are the Master Lorekeepers. They are responsible for keeping the realms' continuities flowing. Because their duties have made them more busy, the realms they help create still need to be supervised by the lesser Guardian Lorekeepers. Mithel Celestia leads these ranks as the Grand Lorekeeper and supervises the order to ensure that nothing is out place.
Sometimes however the Voids influence still leak through the watchful eyes of the Lorekeepers. In the realms, the Void is seen as an ink-black smoke but it is in actuality a shadow of nothingness that doesn't let anything escape its grasp. The Void is a fundimental property. Like air pressure, it seeks to overwhelm all of creation as a natural state. But to let the Void take over tips the balance and so the Lorekeepers are there to push back against Void. The Reality Helix helps clear the realm of any Void influence and returns all that was consumed back to its rightful place.
Still the realms isn't the only thing Void can influence. If a Lorekeeper is in a particularly weak state of mind, it can take them over and they become a slave to its temptation. These are the Void-touched that have been foresaken from order. All the Void-touched see is peace; peace within the Void where there are no emotions, no desires, no things to disrupt the peace. But this requires destruction of all they have created.
If a Lorekeeper gets strongly attached to the universe it guards, it can cause them to gain mortal emotions and allow the Void to easily influence them.
One such Lorekeeper that had been forsaken by the order was Omen. Omen used to be a lorekeeper; keeping watch over the dimension he was assigned to. But he got too involved in that dimension and had an affair with a mortal. The moment a rift opened in his dimension, it was far too strong to contain and the Mithel Celestia had no choice but to terminate it entirely. Omen pleaded with them to use the Reality Helix to contain the distortion at this dangerous stage but it was far too risky and could jeopardize the integrity of every other dimension. In the end the realm Omen worked so hard to maintain got consumed and all that Omen had worked for vanished with it.
After that, Omen swore revenge by destroying any dimension he can get his hands on. Omen had been influenced by The Void to exact his revenge on the Lorekeepers.

Poffin's OC-tober - Recent Past: Lorekeeper (10.10.23)
Continuation of Early Life.
Following a few hundred years of constant journey and imparting of knowledge, Lukatia finally creates a manor to settle in. It first starts off as a small cottage to serve as a temporary homebase. Soon after, her former apprentices from across the realms approach her with gratitude or problems. That turned the momentary refuge into something of a place to come back to after a period of time of going on trips. In what seemed like a whim for Lorekeeper, Lukatia decided to use a significant part of her magic to create a manor for her to live in permanently ⏤ with that cottage now serving as a library that Lorekeeper takes care of. And in that library is a portal that they maintain that serves as a true entrance to the manor Lukatia resides in for her apprentices, demons and other supernatural-aligned people to sense.
Unknown to them, Lukatia’s permanent settlement was part of a plan she’s long planned for.
It was during this period of time when Lorekeeper gained back their prior stature though as a demon this time around. Their own powers of manipulating the space within the library has started to develop. With the portal, they’re able to tie several waypoints to go to other realms (reminiscent of the entrance door in HMC) though the process requires a significant amount of energy and preparation from Lorekeeper. The library they maintain has also increased in size and content. Notably, they keep safe the notes of Lukatia’s apprentices who come to give back their notes of her lessons for a variety of reasons to make sure it isn’t lost to history.
During this period of stability, Lorekeeper occasionally makes acquaintances with other demons who inhabit the manor either as guests or servants that Lukatia picked up from hell. Despite the number of demons, the only ones who have fallen from heaven are only them and the lord of the manor. An unexpected person from Lorekeeper’s old life has also come to passively observe the activities Lukatia has been doing. Sabael was the agent from Heaven who’s kept a distance from everyone except Lorekeeper, warning them that any more interference of the living from Lukatia would end up with the angels deciding to take action. While Lorekeeper kept those words in mind, Lukatia doesn’t seem to be bothered by the angel.
It all comes to a head on a particularly eventful night. Lukatia threw a ball for the demons that resided in the manor as well as all of her apprentices which she invited. Not all of them came, but the ones that did were invited to an afterparty that even Lorekeeper wasn’t privy to. From that day onward, Lorekeeper bore witness to one of the major shifts in the manor’s history. Starting with the establishment of witches from the apprentices that attended Lukatia’s private afterparty and coming to a head with Lukatia’s disappearance.
