So, may I draw your attention to the The Official Languages Act 2003 (Section 9) Regulations 2008 (S.I. No. 391 of 2008).

In 2008, the Irish government passed legislation that made it mandatory for road signs in Ireland to have both Irish (Gaeilge) AND English names on them (or, in Gaeltacht areas where Gaeilge is still the first language, only in Irish). Here’s an example:

The Irish, or Gaeilge, is always above the English and italicised. This is because that while Gaeilge and English are both official languages of Ireland, Gaeilge is the ‘first’ official language

However, while it was technically only legislated in 2008, bilingual road sings in Ireland had been extremely common for decades prior to it officially being made law. In fact, the first bilingual signs date back to the early 20th century - before our independence from Britain!

In Tom Spalding’s book Layers: The Design, History and Meaning of Public Street Signage in Cork and Other Irish Cities, he found that the first recorded bilingual street sign was in Blackrock, Dublin (An Charraig Dhubh, Baile Átha Cliath). Their local council in 1901 rolled out yellow and black bilingual road sings as part of the Gaelic Revival.

The Gaeilc Revical was a period of time in Irish history that saw a huge resurgence of Gaelic art, sport, and language. Literature was written by Irish people about Irish history, current affairs, and folklore. Traditional Irish music was learned and played again. Gaelic games (Gaelic football and Hurling) spread across the country. And Gaeilge, our language, was to experience an incredible revival.

Despite Ireland’s long colonial history, Gaeilge actually remained the majority tongue until the early 19th century. However, a combination of teachers beating children for speaking it at school, the genocide of the famine wiping out mainly poorer communities more likely to speak Gaeilge, and the knowledge that speaking English unfortunately provided more opportunities than Gaeilge, the language was almost killed off. (This is shown most clearly after the 1800 Act of Union that meant Ireland was ruled directly from London, with no parliament in Dublin).

Although these maps make for grim viewing, Irish is so very far from dead. Our children learn it from the ages of 4-18 in school (though I believe it can and should be taught better, but I digress). Gaeltacht communities are still going strong particularly in the west of the country. There are more Irish-language schools (gaelscoileanna) than ever before.

And every day as we pass by road signs that display Gaeilge proudly, it is as a result of decades, centuries of people refusing to stop speaking our mother tongue despite incredible violence.

I am far from a fluent Irish speaker, despite my 14 years of learning the language in school. But what Gaeilge I have, I have proudly.

(The work isn’t over, however. I do not feel knowledgeable enough to speak on Northern Irish efforts to implement more widespread bilingual signage but anyone who wishes to share some info please do!!)

very late congrats to the kirbycraft crew on the achievement! originally I was going to watch kirbycraft at my own pace however, when I heard they defeated the ender dragon I had to binge the series to watch such an important moment. Now I'm obsessed as you can see :)

I know kirbycraft is a wholesome series of friends playing minecraft which I absolutely love, but I can't stop thinking about parallels to blackrock like how Rythian can't stop slipping in little tidbits. it makes me wonder how Rythian would have felt if he killed the ender dragon in blackrock

during his formative years the End was once his home, the Enderman his family, and the Queen his caregiver. would he have felt a sense of joy and relief for defeating a great evil or perhaps remorse and sadness for killing someone who has once cared for him

subspace headcanon dump!!! I love makin this man suffer -subspace implimenting a voice changer-esque thing in his gas mask so he sounds more menacing and a little more artificial-y.

-he also imagines himself as one of the most well-known scientists in Blackrock and one of the most famous people but if he's walking on the street people barely notice him.

-either homophobic as fuck or the zestiest man alive.

-advertises the Biografts as being able to do your household chores as well as being a sort of bodyguard Alternatively, he keeps Biografts in his lab to do things for him when he's busy with research (alternates between researching a cure for his own poison and torture methods)

-his spotify playlist is 10 hours long and consists of hard rock and screams of terror.

-he has severe lung and vocal cord damage from his younger years as a scientist, as he was exposed to toxic fumes from his experiments and it gave him long-term health problems. He cannot yell too loud or overexert himself, or else he'll start a severe coughing fit.

I scripted it already. I just want to slide right into my new life with ease. Investments have paid off. I have millions. My financial paperwork will be tucked in the safe in my closet along with some 10k stacks of USD, EUR, GBP, and CNY...30 gold bars and stacks of nicely stored Silver Coins. Throw in some Copper Couns and Titanium Bars for diversity. Self storage cause I'm a Dragon.

In this safe the paperwork will be for my equity portfolios in Blackrock and Fidelity as well as my automatic Treasury Bill portfolios which churn about $10million of liquid USD in interest generated income (currently 600k a year). I'll also have the check books for my 10 liquid cash bank accounts/money market accounts, which always have 250k in them each...my independent financial advisor in NYC makes sure of it...also my tax guy. I visit with them once a month and take a long weekend to enjoy NYC and New England.

I haven't bought any houses yet. Still shopping. Still wondering where I want my routines to be set. But I will be in the process of buying my Mother and Sister properties...also setting up some cash transfers for my friends...anonymously ofc. They'll know I'm good, but I'm keeping all my shit private.

Right, since im antsy and love sharing lore about aus, and this is the first au i'm sharing with the world ever if i'm being honest, here's a bit more about the au and backstory. ill split this up in three tiers, Differences from canon, subspace's backstory, and a bit of relations (aka what subspace thinks of others/what has happened between the two characters in the au)

first up the differences from canon!

Instead of being born from the spawn, demons are hatched from eggs! and are often really fluffy and small as children

eggs are either wild born or magic born, wild born eggs just magically appear in the wild, often hatch out in the wild and live as orphans until adopted while magic born are "biological". two(or more) demons use some energy from themselves to produce an egg with dna from each demon that helps

wild born eggs are often wildly different from their parents while magic born aren't wild born demons are independent while magic born have a "duckling" stage

anyone can produce a magic born egg as long as they have help, the person who's designated the "mom" is often tired once a egg is made and needs to be cared for

often both wild born and magic born can be a subspecies(cow, crow, shark, deer, rattlesnake you get it.), mutations can evolve, even twins hatching from the same egg can happen, its all rare, but it's possible

Deities are slightly radioactive, causing more mutations in their children, not really important but i am talking about the au

Now we're up to subspace's backstory! which i'll just type out like a story, but disjointedly

Subspace was born from a magic born egg to an unnamed father and unnamed mother, her father going to get the milk soon before Subspace hatched which made her mother very bitter towards men. Once Subspace hatched, she was found to be "male" (the species is agender but have more masculine/feminine looks in body shape depending "gender") which only made her mother angry, causing her to be rather neglectful and harsh to Subspace most of her childhood. No matter what Subspace did to prove herself, she made things, she tried her best...she really did. But no matter what her mother said she'd "always be like every other man" which crushed Subspace's spirit a lot. One time her mother said she should have "just abandoned Subspace" because she would of been "less of a hassle that way", she wasn't allowed to befriend other kids, wasn't allowed to go outside forced to stay home with her mother. She made her first Biograft at the age of 4 almost going on 5, blackrock having kept their eyes on her and her inventions, the first Biograft was poorly made, but it worked for a bit! She carried it around and talked to it like a friend, though it's battery eventually fried and it wouldn't turn back on, and still won't. When Subspace turned 5 Blackrock higher ups talked to her mother, offering a wonderful life if she let Subspace work for them, she never had a connection to Subspace so she motioned for them to take her, which they did. Subspace started working at blackrock at 5, she looked up to Zuka as a father figure early on she would follow him around and cheer him on in training, so when Zuka left she was heart broken, the person she trusted was gone, the person guarding her from most of the hard work left. Around age 15 Medkit started working, Blackrock often using Subspace as a test subject for Medkit's healing powers, telling Subspace "we don't really care HOW you get hurt, just get hurt so we can see how Medkit's healing works". Subspace later "bonds" with Hyperlaser, despite the few year age gap, seeing him as a dad instead despite him not really liking her. The fight breaks out, Medkit gets angry and throws the chemicals at Subspace's face causing her loss of eye and major scarring, and in turn she retaliates, attacking and taking Medkits eye. Medkit runs away and Subspace is fully isolated and alone again, she's used to that though, who needs demon interaction when you have robotics anyway?...

Relationship time, get ready cause it's not good.

Medkit- While medkit messed up subspace's life, rendering her scarred, half blind, and unlovable according to her, she thinks she deserves it, she forgives medkit, hell, she even sort of likes medkit still despite being fearful of him

Sword- first interaction sword tried to stab her because of the story medkit spun, she understands he doesn't realize the real story and holds no ill will towards sword.

Scythe- Scythe on several occasions have grabbed subspace's horns, saying how pretty the horns would look on her wall going into detail on how she'd kill her if she ever harmed medkit again

Ban hammer- she tried to reach out to ban hammer as a friend, but got shot down instantly. ban arrested her once, but she was quickly let go due to her immunity, ban saying "we're not friends, don't act like we are" and "if it weren't for your immunity you'd be in banland by now."

Hyperlaser- basically canon subspace and hyperlaser, just minus the taunting and blackmail from subspace, he's one of the only people who respects subspace's pronouns! but he also tells her to shut up a lot.

any biograft/omegagraft/betagraft- thats her children guys!!!! she's so proud of her robotic sons!!! look at the murder machines go!!!

Traffic- one of the other people who respect her pronouns, she offers shelter when he's in blackrock, they're friends!

Zuka- they're not in contact anymore, they only interact when she heads to phights, thats it...

Lord pwnatious- the rich nepo baby she does not like and took the omegagraft from, they're on bad terms now. horrible for her pwn's family is a noble family

Rocket- they know vaugely of each other, but not enough for an opinion, (could have been siblings if zuka adopted subspace but alas...)

The Broker- Has probably sent her one too many threatining calls to make sure she stays away from harming medkit. she doesn't interact with him otherwise.

sorry for not posting every1, tumblr broke and refused to let me post my draft of headcanons, so im rewriting! have some medkit headcanons i decided to write up for my personal self!

⟡ when medkit met you earlier, he was completely infauted with you, and that is something he can't resist at all. ⟡ him?? out of all the people, he is the one falling for someone as .. gorgeous and gentle .. like you? he couldn't believe his own mind nor feelings! ⟡ he went straight to sword for assistance, especially someone as cold-hearted as him. who knew that he'd have taste into someone like you. ⟡ he thought he was sick or caught something from you, like an infection. he certainly did. ⟡ approaching you gave him horrible heart-aches, ones that burnt. ones that he had never experienced properly before, ones that made his stomach flip thousands of times like it used to at tough exams in blackrock. ⟡ he couldn't stop looking at you, his ears turning a teal whenever you caught him glimpsing him. it was cute to say the least. ⟡ vine staff helped support you when you gossiped about him, in which vine staff would report back to the unstable doctor. he was driven insane with the nice remarks and his unique features, strong accent and his strong accent. ⟡ if you were to go into his room and sneak a bit, you'd find tons of un-sent letters that wrote about you and how much he couldn't contain his own feelings. ⟡ the biggest hopeless romantic possible, yet he is unable to breath out a single confession around you. his breath is held tight in his own throat. ⟡ when he first asked you out to spend 'time', he took you to catshots cafe, in which the gossip train ran WIIIILLD. going to a match with you two ended up with people suggesting hints between eachother ⟡ medkit would later refuse to heal any of the said people except you <3 ⟡ you had to be the first to confess, medkit couldn't get out of his room when he had asked you to spend time with him for the phestival! ⟡ when he got home, he nearly fainted that sword had to take him to bed and make sure he doesn't DIE from those butterflies in his stomach! ⟡ he did want the relationship to be under covers, especially with blackrock assassins and subspace still hunting around for him. if he found out, he would be beyond worried ⟡ when you first moved in, he made you tons of food and would berate sword for his stupidity and strange questions of keeping it ""quiet"" in bed ⟡ he is a person that probably doesn't know how to cuddle with someone in bed, so you'd probably have to teach him where to put his arm and leg, all that stuff ⟡ biggest cuddler. but be careful of where you put your horns!!! sometimes he loves cuddling so much and hugs, he refuses to speak up about the poking ⟡ i know canonically this guy is 5 something, but i think realistically he'd be a bit more taller, but not too tall. he uses his height to boast towards subspace ⟡ occassional dates because he just adores your presence, its so heartwarming and soft ⟡ he is terrified of losing you, im not kidding. sometimes at night, he'd wake up and have meltdowns. he'd struggle to comprehend that you could die because of his history. ⟡ the nightmares are continuous, which means a lot of reassurance and comfort for him, even if he denies it ⟡ you'll have to convince him to come to bed too btw, hes a big insominac and workaholic at night

even though he only has one arm, he’s amazing at cuddling and seems to always want to be as close to you as possible.

when you’re sitting on his lap, he loves to hold you by the waist and rest his head on your shoulder.

he’s really overprotective of you, and whenever someone random even tries talking to you, he stares daggers at them until they back off.

he’s really tough, but once you get to know him he’s almost the complete opposite.

he constantly gets into fights defending you and almost unhealthily, he doesn’t care what happens to himself as long as you’re okay.

he calls you things like “my darling” and always seems to know when and how to comfort you

he says a lot of pickup lines , a lot of them being a little dirty.

He wants to take you to see the world, but Blackrock is keeping him in the country for some unknown reason.

Yandere Subspace Headcanons / Sorta a Oneshot:

You were a co-worker with him at Blackrock, and as soon as he saw you he got interested in you.

At your break, he came into the break room and sat down across from you, and saying he was staring was an understatement.

"Hello ?" You said. The stare he was giving you was one of interest and one of malice.

"Well, hello there !" He was grinning under his mask, you could tell. "I hope you don't mind that I sat here. You . . . Intrigued me."

You looked at him, confused. "Is . . Is that a good thing ?"

"Of course !" He replied. "You should be honored to be in MY presence !" he tilted back in a dramatic way.

You looked at him with a confused look. "What do you mean ? You haven't even told me your name , I don't know who you are ."

He froze for a moment in shock, wide eyed. "You . . You don't ?!" He was surprised, he knew you were new around here but, you've never heard of him?! He was a little frustrated by this. "I'm Subspace !! Everyone knows of me ! They SHOULD know who I am ! I am the most powerful scientist in all of Blackrock !" He stated, proudly.

You smiled awkwardly, he seems to be a little unhinged. "Cool . . So . . Why are you sitting by me ?" If he was so powerful, why is he sitting by you? You weren't anything special. "And what did you mean by 'intrigued' ?"

He grinned in a suspicious, evil manner. "Oh- I can't tell you that now dear~ . . But anyway, I have to go, I have a couple things to do . . ." He walked off, and you could confidently say you were unnerved.

After that odd conversation with you, he definitely wanted to be close to you. He occasionally goes into your workroom while you are not there to either rearrange things (he likes seeing how he can mess with your head) or to steal something. It's never anything too important, usually just random items you bring in.

He absolutely loves to follow you around, and seeing you feeling paranoid of being watched, it thrills him.

He tries to get more close with you, but it usually just turns into you walking away due to being uncomfortable. And of course, he doesn't like that.

After a while of trying to get close with you and failing, he got angry. He wasn't going to let you just, ya know, leave.

He definitely kidnapped you after that.

“Ugh !” Of course you tried running… why wouldn't you?! Subspace was frustrated, of course. He chased after you, he wasn't too far behind you.

After about 20 seconds, he managed to lunge and knock you down. He looked at you with crazed eyes. (Or uh, eye.) You, of course scared for your life, tried struggling.

After a moment or two, he knocked you out.

He didn't tie you up, at first, you were too dizzy to run, after all.

If you did try running after you felt better, he wouldn't go after you, no no, he would send some Biografts after you. They are much faster than him. He ordered them not to kill you, of course, just bring you back to him. After you got back to him, he made sure you couldn't leave.

You woke up, startled. You quickly realized you couldn't move. You frantically look around the room you were in, it looked to be some sort of lab, only to see Subspace staring at you with a thrilled expression on his face.

"Oh dear! Are you tied down?" He said with fake concern. He stood up from his chair and slowly walked closer to you. You tried to struggle to get out, but the ropes were too tight and too strong. He laughed, a crazed, maniacal laugh. "Aww . . you're trying to leave me again ?!” As he got to where you were tied up he kneeled down next to you. His face got more manic as he grabbed and caressed your hand.

You wouldn't be leaving any time soon.
