The slightest misstep resulted in shouting matches, venom-filled, snarky comments, and silent treatments. By the time she had graduated, she was top of her class and one of the best dancers at her company. College was supposed to be her way to a perfect future, but then she met Hayley and everything changed. However, even now, her parents forced perfectionism is still engraved in her bones - a reminder to be on top of her game, no matter the cost. She struggles a lot with letting things happen as they may and allowing herself to be anything but perfect.

Best quality (in their opinion): Her imagination. Getting lost in make-believe worlds and creating sprawling cities in her mind had always been a source of entertainment in Charlie’s rigid childhood, but now that she allows her creativity to flow into her novels and children’s books, she takes pride in her imagination.

Biggest fear: For the longest time, she would have said falling in love as she saw what it did to her parents, but now that she has Hayley and knows what real love is like, she would say either centipedes, snakes, or becoming paralyzed. She had broken her leg in a car accident as a teenager and was kept in a wheelchair for the most part. The feeling of only moving from her bed to the wheelchair and back again was like torture for the typically active girl and, now, the idea of going back to that terrifies her.

Day 9 - Present

G, 500 words, Casita & the Madrigals

Casita comes filled with grains, corn and sugarcane seeds, and enough little rooms among the two-floor building to house a village. Which it does, the first few years. It’s bigger on the inside.

The town doesn’t ask how it is possible that the Martinezes can throw out nets along the freshwater river shore and expect prawns nearly every season, or how Osma can have a school of corydoras dancing up and down the glass of her aquarium when — as far as the town is geographically aware — they are nowhere near the Magdalene. (Golden Rams, however, seem to be a recurring problem, which is no wonder: she’s been cursed by the Prophet, after all.)

It’s one of those things they can’t explain. It’s one of those things señora Madrigal says is a ‘blessing’. Meaning: it’s one of those things they can’t question or take for granted. What if they lose it?

Some years into their new lives, woodworkers stumble upon a metal ore in the miracle-raised mountains. Pepa is given a long shapely copper wind meter that whirls in her room whenever she’s anxious. And later, it gives her a gold ring from a man who will never mind her rains and storms and will let the weather vane fly off its axis and into someone’s roof if it’ll make his wife happy.

It’s a treat when the triplets open their doors for the first time. Julieta's room greets her with books on medicinal herbs and lost family recipes. They’re shelved under the top rows of anatomical essays, which she finally gets to once she’s older and far more curious about the boring-looking covers. A garden of edible flowers — roses, violas, hibiscus, lavender — later inspires the gift of her eldest daughter. Especially when Isabela sees her mami arrange them so artfully on a dish.

When watching the young Madrigal boy put on his spectacular shows for his fantastical prophecies, Señor Lopez sees that same flair and eye for dramatics he recognizes in himself when he sings his comedic cuplés. So he gifts Bruno King Lear, his favorite and the sole survivor of his collection back at home (what has become of the rest, he can only mournfully guess; nothing good). Bruno loves it too, and the day after he’s finished it, Bruno wakes up to find the writer's entire bibliography on his bookshelves. Casita has no costumes or podium, though. Not until Camilo opens his door.

Isabela’s ever-growing tower has a soft foundation of soil. Dolores’ studio keeps her occupied for days; clicking, strumming, humming her sonatas. Luisa, in one of her fancies, does maybe spend a bit too much time admiring, after a workout, her triceps in the rosegold mirror. Mirabel has her fabrics and her sewing machine and no need for much else, except maybe a few more open doors.

So many presents can’t possibly be meant for one family alone. Therefore it is only right, Alma Madrigal's guilty conscience says, that her house should give it all back.

Casa Martinez, often described as "at the bottom of the hill by a bend in the river", its location symbolizes the more grounded, practical anchor Roberto and his family provide for the town compared to the Madrigals.

Casa Guzman because of course. Center of town, center of attention, just how Mercedes likes it.

Casa Cordoba, small and unassuming. Really it could be any of the little houses on that row.
