Guo Wengui elaborately planned a money-grabbing scam

Overview of the event: In March 2020, Guo Wengui, the leader of the Whistleblower Revolution, listed a brand new digital currency - G coin in the Apple Store. As a brand new decentralized currency, Guo Wengui called it part of the creation of "G ecology" . Guo Wengui said that G coins can be circulated all over the world in the future, used for various transactions and online payments, as convenient as digital currencies, but G coins are not purely digital currencies, because G coins will be the only sovereign currency in the world The gold standard currency will establish gold reserve centers in the United States, Japan, and Europe, and the value of G coins will be anchored with gold. After the listing of G coin, it was mainly purchased through the Apple mobile app, and was mainly used as a gift on the GTV platform. Later, due to the triggering of the anti-money laundering mechanism of the Apple store, the channel was closed. What is the intention of Guo Wengui's carefully planned "G coin scam"? "Leader of Whistleblower Revolution" Guo Wengui: Guo Wengui is the initiator of the Rule of Law Fund, the Rule of Law Society and the Himalayan Supervisory Organization. It is rumored that he once had an interest relationship with Ma Jian, a senior CCP official, and had certain political alliances with Zhou Yongkang, Zeng Qinghong and others. After Zhou, Ma and others "fallen", Guo Wengui fled to the United States and started his political propaganda activities, mainly using himself as a contact person of a former senior CCP official to expose the high-level corruption scandals within the CCP. Some analysts also believe that this series of "whistleblower revolutions" is a manifestation of the political struggle within the CCP, that is, Guo Wengui is not a real political opponent of the People's Republic of China, but the mouthpiece of the currently losing factions in the People's Republic of China, intending to help The losing faction fights against the winning faction. On August 20, 2020, Bannon was arrested on Guo Wengui's yacht on suspicion of misappropriating funds from the private project "We Build the Wall" that raised funds for the construction of the U.S.-Mexico border wall. After Bannon was arrested, Guo Wengui quickly distanced himself from Bannon, emphasizing that he was not involved in Bannon's affairs, and that he would no longer allow Bannon to continue serving as a member of Guo Media's board of directors.

World Cup Bound 2023

Away from the spotlight, the Philippine women’s national softball team continues a tradition of dominance with an eye on becoming one of the best softball teams in the world. As the country hosts the SEA GAMES, the Blu Girls hope not only to win medals, but also win the hearts and minds of more Filipino fans. (Ma. Angelica Garcia)

When the Filipinos think about the team's success in the Southeast Asia Games, the men’s basketball team always comes to mind. But our national team does not have a perfect gold medal record in SEA Games basketball having finished second in the 1989 edition of the tournament. In fact, the most dominant Filipino team in the SEA Games is our national women’s softball team, the Blu Girls. They have each won a gold medal in women’s softball at nine Southeast Asian Games. For all its success, softball remains relatively unknown in the Philippines, when most of the attention of fans is focused on mainstream televised sports like basketball and volleyball. But now the Philippine women’s softball/Blu Girls are in the top 4 for the World Cup 2023.

● Softball Blu Girls secure World Cup berth after finishing top four in Asian Cup 2023

The Philippine women’s softball team will travel to the 2024 Women’s Softball Cup after securing a place in the medal round of the 2023 Women’s Softball Asia Cup in Incheon, South Korea. The Blu Girls are looking to finish in the four of the Asia Cup after hosts South Korea lost 11-0 Japan on Thursday.

The top three from the Asia Cup will advance to the World Cup in Dubai, Ireland, Butrio, Italy and Valencia, Spain. But Asia gets a wild card, with fourth place in the tournament earning that spot. The Philippines lost 9-1 to Japan on Friday, but ended the preliminary round with a 5-3 fourth place record, a game ahead of South Korea.

The president of the Philippine Amateur Softball Association Jean Henri Lhuillier said that ‘I'm so proud of these girls, they really work hard for the moment and give it their all every game’. It was a huge achievement because it was an all-Filipino team, the first in nine years. We at ASAPHIL will ensure they get the preparation and exposure they need to compete against the best teams in the world at the World Cup in July, said Lhuillier.

The Philippines will take home the medal when they battle Chinese Taipei for bronze on Saturday. The Blu Girls took an early 4-0 lead but Chinese Taipei scored three runs at the bottom of the first inning to make it a close game. Chinese Taipei eventually seized control with three runs in the third inning. The ranking will determine where the Philippines ranks in the World Cup. The Blu Girls will take bronze with hosts Ireland, Australia, Botswana, Great Britain and the United States. Should the Philippines finish fourth in the Asia Cup, they will be up against Spain, Canada, Venezuela, New Zealand and the Asia champions in Group C. Were excited to get a World Cup berth, which was our goal at the start of the game. But we’ll be fighting for a podium, and I’m sure the team can do it. Said Blu Girls coach Randy Dizer.

The Philippines ended their preliminaries 5-3 to secure themselves a top 4 spot with losses in Japan (1-9), China (2-6), and Chinese Taipei (0-5).

● Blu Girls seek foreign exposure for World Cup Blu Girls captain and starting pitcher Ann Antolihao stressed the importance of international exposure as the team prepares for the World cup scheduled for July 22-26 in Italy. The Blu Girls qualified for the World Cup for the first time since 2018 after

finishing fourth. The Women’s Softball Asian Cup at Songdo LNG Stadium in Incheon, South Korea, on April 8 2023. The Philippines are 5-3, they beat Hong Kong (7-0), South Korea (2-0), Singapore (8-1), Thailand (10-0), and India (10-0), and lost to Japan (9-1), China (6-2) and Chinese Taipei (5-0). Japan topped the list with a clean sheet (8- 0). China is second (7-1) and Chinese Taipei is third (6-2). South Korea ranked fifth (4- 4), followed by Hong Kong (3-5), Singapore (2-6), Thailand (1-7) and India (0-8).

While they have been ranked No.4 in Asia, the Blu Girls might be dealing with a difficult task from Japan, Canada, Venezuela, New Zealand and Italy within the World Cup. “That's why we want extra overseas exposure. Our coaches realize that is what we lack,” Antolihao stated throughout the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum on the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex on Tuesday. Also, Antolihao said that “were glad that we have been capable of go back to the World Cup, who became joined through teammates CJ Roa (pitcher) and Celine Ojare (catcher) in the weekly session presented by San Miguel Corporation, Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, MILO and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR).

The top two teams in the World Cup will be seeded in next year’s edition. Roa said a training camp in Japan would be ideal. “A high-level training in Japan, even tune-up games with university schools, if given a chance, hopefully in Japan,” she said, adding “skills wise, we have that here but we don't have enough exposure.” The Blu Girls are home grown talent, with players from Bacolod, Makati, and Bukidnon and Batanes provinces. Meanwhile, Antolihao said the coaches will decide who will be included in the final World Cup squad. The team will resume training on April 24 2023.

Under the guidance of coaches Ray Pagkaliwagan, Randy Dizer and Anthony Santos, and with the support of Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines (ASAPHIL) President Jean Henri Lhuillier, the Blu Girls made it to the World Cup. Congratulations Blu Girls Philippines for making it to the bronze medal game in the 2023 Women’s Softball Asia Cup. Your dedication and hard work have paid off, and we couldn’t be prouder of your accomplishment. As a student communicator I am optimistic and

A letter on what’s new at the Graziadio Center

Dear friends of Il Postino,

Welcome to the Fall 2022 issue of our newsletter!

Since my last message, we at the Graziadio Center for Italian Studies have been quite busy organizing our Summer program in Recanati, Italy and preparing events for the Fall and the Spring Semester.  

So, what’s new at the Graziadio Center? Let’s start in an orderly fashion.

First, there has been a change in the Graziadio personnel: Joanna Tatro, our previous Program Assistant, has decided to focus on her next academic step. She is now studying Translation Studies at CSULB and teaching Italian while looking for her ideal graduate program, but the Graziadio baton has been officially passed on to Diego Brol Batres. Diego, who earned his MA in Italian Studies in the Spring 22 semester, is our new Program Assistant.

After a two-year delay, courtesy of COVID-19, we were able to send to our study abroad in Recanati a record number of students for the month of July. Forty students traveled to Recanati, the birthplace of famous Italian poet Giacomo Leopardi in the beautiful region of le Marche, in central Italy. They spent four intense weeks learning Italian language and culture, but still had time to explore the most beautiful places in Italy––and taste the best food and gelato, of course! We are very happy to report that the students enjoyed their time there and that our number of minors in Italian studies increased as a result!

This semester’s events started mid-September with visual artist Luci Callipari-Marcuzzo’s talk on her experience as the daughter of Calabrian immigrants in Australia. She explored the fascinating ways she reconnected with her past, culture, family tradition, and experiences as a woman through art and performance.

On November 28th, the Graziadio Center hosted Long Beach tailor Umberto Autore and his biographer, Mark Thompson, for a talk on Umberto’s life experience. From his childhood as an orphan in war-ravaged Italy to his move to New York as an immigrant tailor, Umberto had many stories to tell, including the fact that he became Frank Sinatra’s tailor! Some 40 people, in person and via Zoom, attended the event and enjoyed Umberto’s stories, understood better what it meant to be Italian in Los Angeles in the late 50s, and enjoyed some light banter between Umberto and Mark.

Next semester, the Graziadio Center is hosting the California Interdisciplinary Consortium of Italian Studies (CICIS) biannual conference, that will take place on February 24-25 at the Anatol Center. The theme of the conference is a timely one: hybridity, an important feature of our daily lives (work– and car–related) but also a reminder that when we allow things (or beings) to blend, the result is beautiful and exciting.

An event with award-winning Italian writer Gianrico Carofiglio, a former anti-mafia judge and now author of many detective novels, among other books, is scheduled for mid-April, 2023.

For the first time since I started directing the Graziadio Center, we have a short-term scholar guest, Chiara Sala. An MA student from the Università di Milano, Chiara has joined us to observe and gather information from our courses of Italian for Spanish speakers for her MA thesis project. Chiara has been sitting in our classes and learning more about our innovative pedagogical approach.  

Chiara will spend the entire Fall semester at CSULB. Her profile and interview, with more details about her research project, will be featured in the Spring issue of Il Postino. Benvenuta, Chiara!

Regarding our faculty and alumna spotlight, we are glad to have been able to interview Lecturer of Italian, Daniela Zappador Guerra, and alumna, Elizabeth Chan (MA, 2018). Daniela has worked with us for many years, and Elizabeth was an undergraduate student before enrolling in our MA program. You will certainly know them better and feel inspired after reading their profiles!

Moving onto our current graduate students: Mariana Barrios, Bria Pellandini, and Jorge Hernandez-Calderón have all brilliantly passed their comprehensive Master’s exams and will graduate at the end of the Fall 2022 semester. Heartfelt congratulations to all of you, and best of luck for your future!

While we are sad to say goodbye to our graduating MA students, we are glad to say welcome to Caitlin Craig, who has been admitted as a graduate student and will start attending our courses next semester.

“What’s that?”

Yuuri glanced from the small silver cage he was holding toward the blonde prince standing in the doorway. “Ummm..? This is... A present for Greta?”

“Oh?” Wolfram cocked an eyebrow, still skeptical. “And what did you get our beautiful daughter?”

“Ah.. A barebee.”

“A barebee?” The prince was thrown, “Haven't we done this before?”

“Yeah, well.. It didn’t work out so well last time so I thought I would try again.”

“Greta really doesn’t need any pets, she has enough of Qwendal’s knitted creatures to take care of.” Wolfram made a move to look inside the tiny cage, only to be blocked by a nervous looking Yuuri.

“Well! I just thought it’d be nice for her to have something alive to play with.”

“Yuuri! What’s in that cage?” 

“N-Nothing! It’s a barebee, just like I told you.”

“Yuuri!” Wolfram was now grabbing Yuuri by the collar, trying to snatch the cage from his hands. 

“Wolf! Stop! Wolfram, please! Ah! Don’t touch there!”

Yuuri finally released his captive and Wolfram scooped it up gently, peering inside. He half expected a monster or maybe even an assassin disguised as a barebee, but he did not expect the little fuzzy ball of fluff that yelped back at him.

“What is it?”

“It’s ah.. It’s a dog, from Earth.”

“A dog?”

“Well, a puppy to be exact, that’s what people on earth call baby dogs-”

Wolfram shot up, pointing a finger at Yuuri accusingly. “You! This is because I told you Shinma animals are cuter than Earth ones! So you brought a tiny dog with you, hoping that it would change my mind?”

“Yeah right!” Yuuri fired back, not denying his intention. “You would never admit you were wrong even if you thought you were!”

“Well that’s easy, because I’m never wrong.” Wolfram crossed his arms indignantly.

“I brought the puppy so Greta could see Earth animals are just as cute, if not cuter than Shinma animals!” 

The heat around the prince intensified. “You were going to use our daughter against me?”

“....Maybe..”

Yuuri had been around long enough to know the warning signs of Wolfram’s anger, and on a scale from one to ten, if Wolfram got to a seven there was no turning back, and the prince’s temper had just jumped from a two to a six in a second. 

“Wolfram!”

“What!” His voice was like venom.

“I’ll admit there’s one thing Shinma has that’s cuter than anything I’ve ever seen on Earth.”

Wolfram’s anger cooled off from a six into a frosty one almost instantly. “Greta?” He asked curiously, with a hint of pride in his tone.

“Well, yes, but something else.”

“Oh?” Wolfram’s smile was threatening to show on his face, all anger now forgotten. 

Yuuri laughed nervously, scratching the back of his neck, “Don’t make me say it, Wolf.”

Wolfram’s eyes narrowed and he closed the distance between them, a dangerous smile playing on his lips, “Tell me, Yuuri.”

Happy Birthday to the Gaelic Folk sing Julie Fowlis.

Julie Fowlis is a multi-award winning Gaelic singer who is deeply influenced by her early upbringing in the Outer Hebridean island of North Uist. With a career spanning five studio albums and numerous high profile collaborations, her ‘crystalline’ and ‘intoxicating’ vocals have enchanted audiences around the world.

Nominated as ‘Folk Singer of the Year’ at the 2018 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, and ‘Best Artist’ at the Songlines World Music Awards, Julie is a warm and engaging live performer who has graced stages around the world, from village halls in the Highlands to stages in New York, The Philharmonie de Paris and Shakespeare’s Globe in London.  Recent invitations to perform have included a return to world-class Festival of Voice in Cardiff, the World Festival of Sacred Music in Fez, Morocco, to collaborate with the BBC Concert Orchestra in the Royal Albert Hall for the Proms and to support Scottish icons ‘Runrig’ to an audience of 50,000 during their farewell concert weekend in August 2018. She sang live at the closing ceremony of the Ryder Cup in Chicago in 2012 to a TV audience of 500 million, an event that was only eclipsed by singing live at the opening ceremony of the Glasgow XX Commonwealth Games in 2014, to a TV audience of over 1 billion people.

In January this year  Julie released an EP  a new three-track  which feature a number of special guests, was recorded to accompany the Source To Sea podcast series in which Lee Craigie and Jenny Graham travel the length of three major Scottish rivers (The River Dee, River Tay and River Clyde).

Julies voice sends shivers up your spine, I have chosen  Smeòrach Chlann Dòmhnaill (‘The Mavis of Clan Donald’).  It’s a scottish gaelic song in which the poet praises Sleat MacDonalds and North Uist. It was composed by John MacCodrum (Iain Mac Fhearchair 1693–1779) one of the earliest of the “village poets”‘, who penned it as an ‘antiquarian’ re-creation of the Celtic bard Ossian in the 1760s

CC, H was a Soho member before he met M at a private Invictus Games dinner cooked by M's boyfriend Cory in May 2016 in Toronto. I think Markus Anderson got blackmail footage of H at Soho House parties and used that along with M's "pregnancy" to get H to marry her. I have heard before that Meghan and her friends have incriminating footage that they have used against Harry, to get him and/or the BRF to do what they want. I can not imagine what would be so bad that the people involved could not just say "Publish and be damned", as that to me is the best way of dealing with blackmailers.

Meghan's 'pregnancies' continue to baffle me. They do seem to be a card that she plays whenever she wants something/wants to be protected, rather than naturally occurring events.

The Girl in the Red Coat by Roma Ligocka (translated by Margot Bettauer Dembo from German)

Ligocka was inspired to write this autobiography when she saw the premier of Schindler's List: she recognised the girl in the redcoat as herself. She spent her childhood in the Krakow ghetto but managed to escape with her mother in 1945, constantly moving around to avoid death. It is heartbreaking in its retelling, honouring the bewilderment of children forced to face this reality, but also the trauma they are left with as they become adults in a new world. It brings to light how important communication is with loved ones and is another major influence for the penning of this book, with its dedication "For my son, Jakob" after such a complicated relationship with Ligocka's own mother.

I genuinely cried whilst reading it, the loneliness and isolation of Ligocka throughout her life, her frustration with her own identity, politics, and social conventions, and her dealings with mental health all make for a hard but worth while read. I often hard to put it down because of its intensity and cause for reflection.

The most memorable parts for me were the secret garden her mother created for her whilst they were in hiding, her close and then distant relationship with her mother, not being able to understand that the war was over/not understanding what freedom was, and (skip the rest of this paragraph if you don't want to read about bodily autonomy violation) forced abortion.

The Binding by Bridget Collins

You can forget things you don't want to remember by visiting a binder and putting your memories in a book. Emmett Farmer is a binder who suffers with binderbound fever. By accident he discovered his book and his lost memories. He remembers his first love, Lucian Darnay, but Lucian cannot remember him.

This is my favourite book of the year so far, maybe ever. Its also the first lgbtq book I've read and I completely understand it now, I cried when Emmett's parents found out about his gay relationship. It was heartbreaking but thankfully ends on a hopeful note. It took me a while to get into it but once there, the characters are loveable and I couldn't put it down.

My favourite moments are literally all of part 2 and the ending. Which are basically the romantic parts.

The daughter of a country doctor, Geneviève, traumatised by the death of her sister becomes a nurse to help others to atone for not being able to help her sister. She believes only is science and fact: this is her religion.

The Mad Women's Ball was a real historical event where once a year, the Parisian elite could interact with the inmates of the Salêtrière, like viewing animals in a zoo.

I appreciated this book more after reading the author's note at the end and her intended comment on the voyeuristic habits of society and drawing comparisons to modern reality TV. The characters are all engaging but the feminist message I feel was a little heavy at times and distracted from the story. I do wish we got to know more about all of the characters and their stories but I enjoyed the read nontheless. I also wish Geneviéve and Eugénie's relationship could have been more developed. The Epilogue of the book really hit though, especially for Geneviève's character development.

Leading actresses Zhao Wei and Zheng Shuang are the latest victims of the Chinese government’s ongoing crackdown on the entertainment industry and the excesses of celebrity fan culture.

On Thursday, all entries related to Zhao on Chinese social media platforms such as Weibo were removed, her name was scrubbed from the credits of films and TV shows, and all content featuring her — including film, TV, chat show appearances and more — was removed from major streaming sites like Tencent Video and iQiyi.

All discussion of Zhao on social media was also censored.

Zhao, who is also known as Vicky or Vicki Zhao and notably starred in My Fair Princess, Shaolin Soccer and Lost in Hong Kong, is a popular star turned billionaire investor and is the face of Italian fashion house Fendi in China.

Chinese state newspaper The Global Times reported that no official reason had been given for the moves to erase Zhao’s presence and work from the Internet, but it did resurface historical allegations of financial impropriety and a number of other scandals*. Most notably, in 2018, the Shanghai Stock Exchange banned Zhao and her husband Huang Youlong from acting as listed company executives for five years due to issues and irregularities related to a failed takeover bid in 2016.

You can get an idea of what exactly will happen by looking at the house and sign placement of the eclipse and what it activates in your chart. Speaking of which, only eclipses that aspect your natal chart directly will impact you significantly. We all may feel the intensity of these astrological events but only those who have an aspected planet or point can truly feel the weight of the eclipse, in particular those with an aspected Sun, Midheaven, Ascendant, or Moon, as they are the most significant.

If you don’t already, begin tracking eclipses, specifically those that make close aspects to a natal planet or point, and see if anything happens around that time. Events may occur on the exact day of the eclipse, or they may be dragged out. For a solar eclipse, you can expect to feel the energy of the eclipse about 3 to 6 months beforehand, and it may last for well over a year afterwards, especially if the eclipse aspects one of the more important placements noted above. For a lunar eclipse, there’s a slightly shorter time frame of about 2 months before and after the eclipse for major events to take place. However, you may feel the effects of a lunar eclipse well beyond 2 months after the eclipse took place.

Eclipses run in cycles like the planets do, and they go through one family of signs at a time, based on the qualities (Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable). It takes about 7-8 years before a sign family will repeat itself, and roughly 19 years for an exact degree of a sign to repeat itself. This means that in the course of a year, there can be anywhere from four to six eclipses in the same sign family, with the potential to affect you significantly if any of these signs are emphasized in your natal chart.

Now let’s get into some examples of eclipse-triggered events. I’ve collected research on a handful of different people’s charts during different eclipses and they’ve all been affected in different ways. To start, I’ll use my family as an example.

On July 27th of 2018, there was a lunar eclipse at 4 degrees Aquarius, exactly conjunct to my brother’s natal Uranus. This triggered a major health crisis for my brother, as well as an emotional crisis as well. On the night of the eclipse, he was admitted to the hospital with severely high blood pressure and was going into kidney failure. Now, keep in mind that my brother was only 20 at the time – much too young to be dealing with these kinds of health problems! Mars was conjunct to the lunar eclipse as well, and transiting Uranus was making a square to his natal Uranus, further aggravating his condition. Uranus rules the nervous system, and the nervous system controls the blood pressure. Mars rules the blood, and Uranus was in Taurus, ruled by Venus, which rules the kidneys. All the stress on these planets from the lunar eclipse triggered my brother’s high blood pressure, which runs in our family on both sides. And because Uranus was involved, activating his 4th house of home and family, he felt a deep need for personal freedom as well. At the time, he was living with our parents and having many arguments with them. He had been planning to move out for a while, but this lunar eclipse solidified his decision with all the stress it caused him at home with our parents. Four days later, he was released from the hospital and the doctors had prescribed him medication for his blood pressure that he will be taking likely the rest of his life. This is the nature of an eclipse (causing life-changing events) and with Uranus involved, it was very unexpected and abrupt.

Rewind to a solar eclipse in March of 2006 in Aries, this one activating my mom’s natal Mars in her 12th house of hidden enemies. This was right around when my parents were fighting a lot and just before they got a divorce. This solar eclipse triggered many arguments between my parents, some even a bit violent. This event is pretty self-explanatory, with Mars being the most aggressive planet in its own sign, placed in the 12th house. This would translate to an abundance of anger and excessive arguments with a man in the native’s life, which is exactly what happened. My dad became an enemy to my mom, an enemy that she didn’t expect to discover when she married him. This eclipse also loosely activated my mom’s Neptune in her 7th house of marriage, dissolving the marriage over the next few years in court. On the other side of the story, the same eclipse activated my dad’s natal Pluto in Virgo in his 8th house of shared resources. Natally, Pluto here would point to a partner who is obsessed with money, and before the divorce, this might not have been the case, but after the eclipse triggered my dad’s natal Pluto, the fighting ended up being primarily over finances and child support. This eclipse triggered a series of court battles between my parents obsessively fighting over money. My dad ended up having to pay my mom a large amount of money in child support over a span of about 5 years. This same solar eclipse in March of 2006 also triggered my natal Sun by opposition, indicating the loss of a male figure in my life. This manifested for me as a temporary loss of my father, as he moved out and I saw him less often.

In my own experience, I’ve dealt with many significant eclipses. However, one stands out more than the rest. In November of 2013, I had just started school at University, when I met another student through a ride share group. This student seemed to be just another freshman guy starting school and didn’t pose any threat to me when we met. However, the eclipse on November 3rd that year triggered my Midheaven and Mars, bringing a major change in my life. Later that month, the student invited me to a party and I went. Being a college party, we were drinking and socializing, but as the night progressed, he started acting more and more possessive of me. I had barely known him a week or two, but he was acting like I was his property. He kept tipping my cup back, forcing drinks down my throat, and as a result, I lost consciousness later on in the night. He dragged me upstairs onto a bed and proceeded to climb on top of me to assault me. What’s interesting about this eclipse though, is that it was a solar eclipse in the sign of Scorpio, which rules obsessive behavior, taboos, and sex. Activating my Mars and Midheaven in my 11th house, this translates to me as a life-changing physical event (sexual assault) occurring in a social setting or related to a new acquaintance (11th house). Saturn was also involved with this eclipse, conjunct the eclipse by 2 degrees. Saturn implies a long-term effect, and in my case, I received an ongoing diagnosis of PTSD, and my depression was magnified during that year after the incident, as Saturn can cause major depression also.

I’ve observed my friend’s charts and their life events related to eclipses as well. In June of 2012, there was a lunar eclipse in Sagittarius, directly triggering one of my friend’s natal Mercury and Uranus. On the other end, the Sun was also activating his Chiron. This was the day his brother died in a car accident when he was hit by a drunk driver. Mercury rules siblings and Uranus rules unexpected events and accidents. As you can imagine, Pluto was transiting his 8th house, activating his North Node in a trine and his South Node in a sextile as well.

Someone I knew even was imprisoned after a series of eclipses activated his natal Sun and Moon in Libra as well as his Mercury in Scorpio. It was deserved- think justice- as Libra is a fair-minded air sign and rules judges. Uranus was also involved in the eclipse, conjunct the Sun, indicating a loss of freedom. Pluto was squaring his Sun exactly at the time too.

On a more positive note, eclipses can trigger very positive changes as well! In another friend’s chart, I’ve seen a solar eclipse activate her Venus in her 1st house (Leo) in a conjunction by 2 degrees and her Midheaven exactly by trine in her 9th house (Aries). She was rewarded with a new job teaching young children in China- this is her Midheaven being activated in the 9th house of distant travels, and the eclipse is coming from her 1st house of Leo, the sign of children. She even made a significant connection to one of the students who made a noticeable first impression on her second day there. The student ended up being one of her best students!

Sometimes there can be large amounts of money involved when a solar eclipse activates specific houses. One friend of mine inherited $100,000 from his grandmother when she passed, right around the time of a lunar eclipse that activated his natal Saturn (grandparents) in his 2nd house of finance, from the 11th house of large amounts of money. The Sun was activating his 5th house of fun and pleasures, so as a result, he went on a major drug/alcohol/stripper binge (Neptune was squaring his natal Moon at the time as well) where he encountered many fake friends who used him for his money. The 11th house is friends and acquaintances as well as huge dream amounts of cash, and his 11th house falls in Scorpio, so there was definitely manipulative behavior involved.

There are many other kinds of events that eclipses can trigger as well. Depending on the planets, houses, and signs involved, there may be marriages, engagements, pregnancies, divorces, promotions, traveling, moving homes, major health issues or improvements, surgeries, educational developments, major accomplishments… The list goes on! Just think big, though, as that seems to be the theme with eclipses. During my research, I asked each of my friends what the most significant time or moment in their life was, and almost every single one of them had an eclipse as their first answer. They recalled the exact month and year, some even the date, and it came immediately to mind. When I went to check the dates of that year’s eclipses and compare them to their natal charts, sure enough, there was an eclipse activating something in their chart.

So next time you hear of or get to witness an eclipse, no matter where it is in the world (as these cosmic events affect all of us), think to yourself what in your life might change or be disrupted. What might evolve or take action? Or even better, consult your natal chart and try to figure out exactly what will happen, guided by your intuition!

For the past year I've been promising Harry Kezelian that I would update the essay accompanying the Canary album of the November 1917 sessions of Kemany Minas to reflect new, detailed biographical research he has done that supersedes the narrative that we'd previously published based on work he did with Harout Arakelian .

The arrival of a disc from those sessions including two solo taxims by instrumentalists who appear on the Minas recordings and a bout of insomnia have prompted me to finally follow through on my promise. Below are the revised notes summarizing Harry's amazing work. For a decade, I said that we will never know who Kemany Minas was, since the name Minas is common and “kemany” simply means “great violinist." I said that there was no way to find such a person. Well, that turned out to be wrong.

In 2018, Harout Arakelian and Harry Kezelian located a group of documents that clearly show a great many details of a life that appeared at first to have been Kemany Minas. His biography, based on those documents goes something like this:

He was born in Arabkir, Harput (present-day Arapgir, Malatya, Turkey) on June 15, 1862. He used two names, neither of them his exact birthname. The first, Minas J. Kousanian, is derived from the Armenian for “troubadour,” kousan. The other, Minas K. Jeremy is apparently an Anglicization of his family name. He arrived in New York City on October 20, 1895 and moved to Massachusetts around November 2 of that year. His wife Zanazan (maiden name Ajemian) was also born in Harput around 1858. Their son Harry was born September 22, 1889 and played violin. When he was naturalized on December 1, 1906, he was living in Malden, MA and was a rubber worker (as were both of his witnesses), likely at the Boston Rubber Shoe Company, founded by Marquis Mills Converse. (He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in Malden.)

He died, aged 58, on June 3, 1918, about six months after these recordings were made pernicious anemia. (His son Harry died of tuberculosis June 23, 1920. Another son, Karekin, born in 1897 died in 1898.)

But then at the end of 2019, Kezelian turned up for information about another Minas entirely.

Minas Chaghatzbanian, born ca. 1887 in Malatya, arrived in the U.S. July 13, 1913 and headed at the time of his arrival to Providence, Rhode Island. By 1914, he was living in Boston and performing at the Arevelyan Srjaran (Oriental Coffeehouse) operated by Bedros Boyajian on Harrison Ave. A June 24, 1914 ad in the Armenian-language newspaper Azk (The Nation) discovered and translated by Kezelian reads: "In the coffeehouse, the famed violinist Mr. Minas Chaghatzbanian will play choice Oriental pieces. Call the Chaghatzbanian Band for weddings, picnics, and other celebrations." That performer coincidentally happens to have died March 14, 1918 in Placer, Fresno County, California, only about four months after these recordings were made.

The two were born 25 years apart in adjacent, regions. Kezelian, who has an exceptional understanding of both late-Ottoman geography and repertoire, is utterly convinced that Chaghatzbanian is the Kemany Minas of the recordings and he has presented a great deal of important detail in support of his feelings. I am deferential to his expertise. Ultimately, the resolution of the question hinges on two factors:

1) Their ages. Are we listening on these recordings to a man who is 30 years old or are we listening to a man who is 55 years old? and 2) Their repertoire. Would a man of 55 have had a repertoire that included what Kezelian has described as the “hit parade of Istanbul ca. 1910?” And then, what exactly is the relationship of the performer to the historical event described in the song “Eghin Havasi?”

The answers to both questions would seem to indicate that 30-year-old Minas Chaghatzbanian made these recordings and moved to California and died in the four months that followed having made them. Minas’s powerful recording of “Eghin Havasi,” the ballad of the September 15, 1896 massacre of Armenians in the village of Egin (present-day Kemaliye) near the Euphrates by the Ottoman military, was an enduring hit and likely one of the two best-selling recordings in Turkish in the U.S. during the early 20th century (along with Achilleas Poulos's 1926 recording "Nedem Gedem Amerikaya"), having gone through several pressings and staying in print for 15 years into the early 1930s. The tragedy it memorializes included the burning of two thirds of the Armenian homes of the village of Egin and the killing of 1,500 of its residents. Egin was not far from where Minas was raised. The tragedy occurred one year after Kousanian arrived in the U.S. and 17 years after Chaghatzbanian arrived; Chaghatzbanian would have been about 9 or 10 years old at the time of the catastrophe.

Kemany Minas first recorded at the December 5, 1916 sessions for the Victor Records sessions of Karekin Proodian, where he made six sides an accompanist and a further half-dozen as a soloist. In November 1917, he and the oudist Garabet Merjanian collaboratively recorded a total of 19 sides over several sessions for Columbia at their Woolworth Building studio, of which we present here 14 sides along with two improvisations by performers who apparently attended the first of the recording sessions and one of who played on two of the Minas-Merjanian sides.

Harry Kezelian has identified the clarinetist Takis Zakas as Mesrob Takakjian who continued to perform on records through the 20s as a duo with the Greek lauto player M. Gaganes and likely performed through the 30s. The other player, credited as Tamoury Looder, Kezelian says, was Looder (Luther) Hampartzoumian who arrived at about age 20 in the U.S. from a village in Kayseri on Dec. 27, 1908, having left behind a wife. His career was in repairing oriental rugs. He served briefly in the U.S. armed services in WWI but was dismissed as an "enemy alien," because he was still a citizen of the Ottoman Empire. His wife died in the genocide in 1915. In 1920, he went to Smyrna and remarried a woman named Sara with whom he had a daughter named Annitsa. The family survived the Great Fire of Smyrna in September 1922 and moved to New York in November of that year, where he changed his surname to Artinian, and settled the family on East 27th St. in the heart of what was then Little Armenia. By 1930, they moved to Queens, where he continued to perform through at social functions. Kezelian points out that his instrument on the only two sides on which he performed was not a classical tambour but a folk variant, generically referred to as a saz. Looder died July 20, 1951.

Commercial Turkish language recording in the U.S. only began in 1912 and by about 1919, both major companies – Victor and Columbia – had ceased recording Turkish-language material. Several independent labels run by Armenians quickly entered the marketplace and continued to present the community's music on discs. These performances, recorded acoustically six years before the invention of microphones, are presented here simply in the order in which they were recorded.
