OJT EATS | Macellaio RC Soho

The other day, we met up with some family and decided that we wanted some steak. We were near Piccadilly Circus so ended up at Macellaio RC in Soho

Seeing as we were about to eat copious amounts of beef, we thought we’d start with a bit of healthy stuff and went with a Ligurian Summer Salad. It had tomatoes, spring beans, anchovies, quail eggs, croutons and a bunch of other stuff. It was a really tasty salad and a nice set up for the beef that was to come.

This dish was a Battuta Zola.  I’m not sure what that means but it was raw fassona beef topped with a layer of blue cheese.  We really enjoyed this; the beef and the cheese are both really strong flavours but they went together really well.  Ultimately, this was basically a cheesy beef tartare and what’s not to love about that?

We also ordered this dish of prosciutto and burrata.  The burrata was really good quality and the prosciutto wasn’t bad either.  An incredibly simple dish but a classic for a reason.

Our T-bone steak.  I think this one was about a kilo and cooked to a lovely medium rare.  There was a nice crust to the beef and was super flavourful.  I’ve always preferred the sirloin side to the fillet side but we enjoyed both on this one.

We also got a slightly smaller ribeye (think it was about 600g).  Ribeyes are my favourite cut and this one had a nice big rib cap that was quite frankly delicious.  The meat had clearly been aged for a decent amount of time as it had that great deep flavour you get from aged meat.

For dessert, we ordered some zeppolas which are basically profiteroles with a custard cream instead of fresh cream. These photos were before the chocolate sauce were drizzled over them (they disappeared too quickly for a photo afterwards). We were in a bit of a food coma by this time but even in that state, we could tell that these were good!
All in all, this was a pretty impressive steak lunch, especially in the middle of theatre land. The sides are super tasty and the beef itself is pretty great!

Had a wonderful time judging the Autumn Tasting for The Spirits Business on Tuesday. The event was hosted at Macellio RC in Soho, who laid on a special 3 course menu for lunch. What an incredible place. Absolutely beautiful inside and the food was exquisite. That tiramisu was divine. There was certainly some treasure to be found anongst the entries. Hard to miss this small restaurant while walking on the Old Brompton road because of the cozy red leather sofa right on the stree underneath a red awning in front of a picture window displaying hunks of Fassona Piedmontese beef from Italy. ... @macellaiorcsouthkensington is a butcher shop/restaurant that’s all about the meat from the starters: carpaccio and tartar, beef heart and bone marrow, and a selection of in-house charcuterie. There are a few simple pastas plus a selection of meat cuts: costata del macellaio (bone-in rib eye), fiorentina del macellaio (at-bone steak), filet, rump and hanger, plus calf liver and schnitzel. They also have a roasted baby chicken and lamb steak. A few simple sides to accompany the meat: sautéed spinach, hand-cut thick fries, mixed greens, roasted potatoes and a fennel-orange salad. ... We started off with the carpaccio - freshly sliced beef drizzled with Tuscan extra-virgin olive oil, salt and pepper. The Fassona meat was slightly sweet and melt-in-the-mouth tender. Next was the 1 kg bone-in rib-eye served on a hot plate. The steak was cooked perfectly medium-rare and came with sautéed spinach and extra-crispy skin-on salty fries. We thought we might have ordered more than we could finish but we finished it all. ... We went along to #Macellaio to learn about their baking course and what makes their bread so special - the answer is that they make traditional #Ligurian breads including this delicious cheese stuffed focaccia. 𝙋𝙍 𝙎𝙖𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚 🍝 From the founder of @macellaiorc comes @casacostauk, a new artisanal food delivery service, delivering ingredients to make Italian dishes, such as this Ravioli Al Tocco. The ravioli is delivered fresh, I then added their tocco sauce, which was also supplied, and added my own fresh grated Parmesan. The whole thing took 4 minutes once the kettle had boiled. Loads of items are available on their online store; pastas, cheeses, meats, pantry items, and ready meals. When a restaurant calls itself Il teatro della carne on their own website, it sets pretty high expectations for the quality of its meat.  They have a number of restaurants around the city and so we decided to pop to the one under the railway arches on Union Street.

Before the meal had really started, we were presented with some charcuterie and foccacia.  The foccacia was nice and fluffy and the charcuterie was delicious.  A nice little touch to start the meal with.

For starters, we got the beef tongue.  It was a very generous serving, you can see that big chunk of tongue on the slate.  It came with a little salsa verde and was meltingly tender.  It was cooked really well as tongue can often be overcooked but the outside had just the most delicate of crusts surrounding a buttery soft centre.  It was good!

We also ordered the lardo bruschetta.  The bread was crunchy and the thin slices of lardo were layered on pretty thick but soft and flavourful with a tiny drizzle of honey and a sprinkling of walnuts.    Along with the beef tongue, a very impressive start to the meal!

The place has an on-site bakery for pizzas and crispy foccacia.  This was their n’duja pizza (or as they refer to it, pissa).  The n’duja was meaty and a little spicy, the mozzarella creamy but it was the crust that was the star of this.  Crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside.  It was pretty small but really tasty.

This was their crunchy foccacia.  It was really thin and had a layer of cheese sandwiched in the middle.  It was really stringy and cheesy but not quite as crunchy as promised.  The outside bits with no cheese were crispy enough but the melted cheese made the middle a little soggy.  Still really good though and something I’d order again!

It had been a pretty rich meal up until now and with a steak still to come, a salad seemed like a good idea.  It was a celeriac salad with a couple of slices of orange which was refreshing and did help manage the lift the impending cheese and meat coma.

That salad proved to be even more necessary when the steak came!  750g of Italian fassona beef dry aged for 7-9 weeks.  It was a ribeye that we ordered medium rare and it was cooked well with a nice char to it.  Possibly a little overseasoned but the beef was really good and full of flavour!  It was quite a bit of meat but it all got hoovered up! :)

The artwork in the place is interesting to say the least.  It takes a bit of getting used to eating beneath this but it’s definitely unique!
I liked this place.  The meat is good quality and the starters and bakery were both impressive.  They have a number of beef tartares on the menu that I’m looking forward to trying!

I was invited down to the new @macellaiorc Fitzrovia restaurant this week and had a great time! Firstly, the staff are amazing, passionate, educated, it really has that Italian family vibe to it. The restaurant is an old converted gas station and they’ve kept the theme going from the decor to the uniforms. They butcher ALL their meat right in front of you in the restaurant, they show you your cut before it’s cooked, it’s rare to get an experience like this. We were given a large selection of dishes to try, but my favourites were the pizza, which may be in my top selection of Neapolitan pizzas I’ve tried, the bone marrow with beef tartare and pomegranate, and of course the Rib Eye. The steak was so soft it melted like butter, cooked perfectly, seasoned well.
