Hello! Here is data on point of view distribution across characters in The Dreamer Trilogy (which I will abbreviate as TD3) as a follow up to my TRC data from last year (viewable here). A rather long-winded discussion of the data, methods notes, and some supplemental figures and tables are under the cut. As it was not possible to include all values and stats in this post (nor in the alt text for image IDs), my spreadsheet can be viewed by clicking here,
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This project quantifies and visualizes the distribution of chapters and pages in the books of TD3 across characters from whose POVs the story is told. I didn’t have much of a hypothesis going into data collection/analysis, especially not like I did for the TRC data, but I did expect to see Ronan’s POV having the most chapters and pages for the entire series, given the fact that he is the most central of the protagonists. I don’t think page time is the be-all-end-all for a character’s importance, of course, but it is still interesting to consider how spending more time from certain perspectives affects the perceived narrative. I won’t get much into that aspect of analysis in this post, but if anybody would actually like to discuss that, I’d love to!
Results (and Interpretation):
TD3 consists of 173 chapters and 1184 pages (using the U.S. hardcover editions), making the average chapter 6.84 pages. The longest chapter is 16 pages, and the shortest is 1 page.
Figure 1A: The average chapter in Mister Impossible (MI) is considerably longer (9.26 pages) than the average chapter in Call Down the Hawk (CDTH) (6.00 pages) and in Greywaren (GW) (6.40 pages), which makes sense as MI has just 38 chapters while CDTH has 80 and GW has 55 (see Fig. 2). To me, the effect of the longer chapters (and therefore extended time with the current POV character) makes the various POVs feel more temporally distant from one another- not in a narratively incoherent way, but in a way that echoes the sense of isolation experienced by dreamers and weaponized by Bryde as he tries to convince Ronan and Hennessy to abandon their loved ones.
Figure 1B: Chapter length is fairly consistent amongst POVs across the series. Matthew has the longest average chapter length (8.40 page) over a small set of chapters (5 total)- his character development (as told from his own POV) is limited to a small number of instances, which may have stretched his chapters a bit longer. The 'Other' category has the shortest average chapter length (5.13 pages) (Fig. 1B); it includes the typically short chapters from witnesses of Visionary explosions/aftermath (Mags, Dabney) as well as Nathan's manifesto excerpts. (As a side note, I've described the chapters depicting memories from the Barns as 'Mór and Niall.' These chapters do not collectively portray an equal balance of their POVs, but this was the simplest way to categorize them.)
Figure 2A-B: These graphs are representations of chapter distribution across POVs in TD3 in terms of chapter count (2A) and proportion of total chapters (2B). Some observed trends include Declan's proportion of total chapters remaining quite constant throughout the series, Ronan's decreasing, Hennessy's proportion of chapters nearly doubling from CDTH to MI (and staying at a similar proportion to MI in GW), and Jordan's proportion following an opposite trend (consistent proportion in CDTH and MI, followed by a more than 50% drop in GW). Carmen's proportion of chapters also declines after CDTH.
Figure 2C: This graph compares total chapters per character POV over the entire series. We can see that the largest proportion of the series is told from Ronan's POV (53 chapters, or 0.306 of all chapters). To put that in perspective, Hennessy has the next highest number of chapters (26, or 0.150 of all chapters), which is just under half the number of Ronan's. If all characters had an equal number of chapters from their POV (including the miscellaneous POVs as one category labeled Other), they would each have 21.6 chapters, represented by the horizontal dashed line; Declan, Jordan, Carmen, and Hennessy all have chapter counts relatively close to this number.
Figure 2D-E: These are representations of page distribution across POVs in TD3 in terms of page count (2D) and proportion of total pages (2E). Trends are similar to those depicted in 2A-B, but 2E does make Declan's increased proportion of page time in GW salient.
Figure 2F: This graph compares total pages per character POV over the entire series. The dashed line shows that if each character (plus the Other category) had equal page time in the series, readers would spend 148 pages with each POV. Again, page data is similar to chapter data, but comparing graphs 2C and 2F gives a clear visual indicator that Jordan's chapters (on average, 8.11 pages) are longer than Carmen's (on average, 6.08 pages), since Carmen has visibly more chapters in 2C yet nearly the same number of pages as Jordan in 2F.
Figure 3: Figure 3 shows distribution of chapters (3A-B) and pages (3C-D) in CDTH, as well as average chapter length for each character POV (3E). An equal distribution of chapters would have been 13.3 per character, and an equal distribution of pages would have been 80.0 per character. The 'Other' category included chapters from the perspectives of Lock, Breck Myrtle, Shawna Wells, Jason Morgenthaler (and Lin Draper, briefly, in the same chapter), Mags Harmonhouse, and Dabney Pitts. Carmen's average chapter length in CDTH (4.67 pages) is the lowest single-book average for character POVs appearing throughout the entire series. (Nathan's average chapter length is just 1.00 [Supplemental Figure 2], yet his POV only appears in GW via his manifesto excerpts, and while I have attributed these chapters to his POV, I interpret the POV as actually ambiguous. As with Kavinsky's text in TDT, it's not absolutely certain if we are reading from the writer or the reader's perspective [although in TDT, due to the lack of Kavinsky POV elsewhere, it's probably the latter]).
Figure 4: Figure 4 shows distribution of chapters (4A-B) and pages (4C-D) in MI, as well as average chapter length for each character POV (4E). An equal distribution of chapters would have been 5.43 per character, and an equal distribution of pages would have been 50.3 per character. The 'Other' category included two chapters, both with what I deemed omniscient narration. Declan had the shortest chapters in MI (8.20 pages), and Jordan had the longest (11.4 pages, the longest average for a character for a single book in this series).
Figure 5: Figure 5 shows distribution of chapters (4A-B) and pages (4C-D) in GW, as well as average chapter length for each character POV (4E). An equal distribution of chapters would have been 6.88 per character, and an equal distribution of pages would have been 44.0 per character. The 'Other' category included Nathan's manifesto excerpts (3 chapters), 1 chapter from Liliana's POV, and 3 other chapters with omniscient narration. While Ronan never has the longest chapters, his chapters are shorter relative to other POVs in Greywaren, perhaps as a result of the way his chapters are written during his time asleep/in the sweetmetal sea. I have not yet investigated whether chapters tend to be longer while characters are awake vs asleep or dreaming, but that's something that could be measured from the existing data in the spreadsheet! There is also a dramatic drop in Jordan's POV time in GW compared to the previous two books, perhaps because of her increased divergence from Hennessy and desire to establish a life that follows her own narrative.
Other findings: A major difference I noted between TRC and TD3 was the lack of split chapters in TD3. In TRC, the data analysis was made slightly complicated by having to account for the fact that a non-negligible number of chapters would make a distinct and discrete switch between POVs partway through. While I did not observe this in TD3, I did encounter more ambiguous/nebulous POVs as I previously mentioned. The increased presence of omniscience in the trilogy, for me, contributed to the increased sense of scale and stakes compared to TRC. This increased continuity amongst POV (not amongst core/recurring POV characters, but amongst groups of characters/communities depicted in the omnisciently narrated chapters) also contributed to a sense of dissolution of barriers and identities, perhaps thematically in line with Ronan's character development and increasingly holistic perspective of both his humanity and otherworldliness (although Ronan is not necessarily featured in these 'boundary-breaking' chapters). I also briefly looked at occurrences of back-to-back chapters from the same POV; this happens most frequently for Ronan in all three books, mainly in CDTH, and sometimes featuring a dreaming chapter directly before an awake chapter (or vice versa) in immediate succession. Declan (MI), Carmen (CDTH), and Jordan (CDTH) all have a pair of back-to-back chapters at some point in the series; Hennessy has 2 (MI, GW).
Conclusions: In all honesty, despite this project being quite fun and fulfilling and of course, worth doing, I do not think I have any particularly insightful conclusions about the data beyond what I've already discussed. Ronan took up the largest share of the chapters and pages as expected, although I am not sure I expected this to be true by such a large margin. I also was surprised that Declan did not have more chapter/page time, but it is possible that his notable inclusion in chapters from other characters' POVs increases his prominence in the series (and I suppose this is probably true for all characters who frequently appear in chapters outside their perspective). As with TRC, the number of POVs expands as the series develops, often with the effect of increasing the scope of the story's implications, and perhaps, more importantly, showing the story from additional angles that contextualize and/or distort narrative established by other characters' perspectives. I hope you've enjoyed exploring the data as I have, and those interested in my methodology may continue reading below!
Methods:
Data collection was straightforward in the sense that I simply counted the pages in each chapter and then assigned each chapter to a character based on the POV represented. The POV character assignment was more difficult than it was for TRC, as TD3 has more omnisciently narrated chapters, which in itself is easy to categorize, but they often zoom in on or are 'biased' towards the experience of a particular character, so I had to make some decisions as to what, for me, constituted sufficient focus on a character’s internal narration and expression vs. omniscience. In the spreadsheet, I took notes on these more subjectively driven decisions. Again, you can view it here! It also contains data on whether the chapter is from an awake or dreaming POV, and has the first lines of each chapter, among which are some fun repeating patterns.
For bar graphs with dots, each dot represents a single chapter. You may also notice that the graphs are missing p-values from statistical tests this time around! This is because, since completing the TRC data, I’ve realized that such measures of uncertainty re: significant differences are not appropriate for my dataset, which is not a sample representing a population, but rather a complete group of chapters (so parametric tests are not necessarily helpful or valid). However, I still like to run the tests for my own amusement and to see what the results would be if this were a dataset for which ANOVA and contingency tests were appropriate, so I have standard deviation bars on the graphs where calculable (but no standard deviations in the text of the results section for legibility) as well as the p-values in tables at the end of this post for anyone also curious. I did still calculate the numbers of chapters and pages that would represent an equal distribution across POV characters, which are represented by the dashed lines on the relevant figures. I think this is helpful to visually gauge 'over-representation' and 'under-representation' of character POVs.
Below are the supplemental figures showing all character POVs rather than lumping some together in an 'other' category. The MI data in figure 4 is not expanded below because the chapters designated as 'other' were omniscient and thus would have remained in the same category.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And finally, here are the omitted p-values, if you'd like to pretend along with me that all the chapters in TD3 are not a complete set but rather a representative sample of a greater population of chapters that's out there in the universe. :) When I give a p-value below the 0.05 threshold but still write 'no significant differences amongst any combination of characters, I mean that the p-values generated for the comparisons between each possible pair of characters were all above 0.05, which are distinct from the overall p-value generated from the ANOVA.

“Beheld Nick! It’s Dead here.
Hey didn’t I wrote down the titles on the tracks on that tape?! I was sure I did… As for the other bands I have no idea now of what those were so I can’t tell you… But our 2 songs are (in the order. I always tape ‘em) the Freezing Moon and Carnage. I must ask you- what is a rapido-graph pen??? The only kind of pens I have are the ones I’m writing letters with, till they runs out and I must buy some new. Or simply something I just find… Yeah it’s shit to draw with the same kind of pens one is writing with but I guess I don’t have any choise [choice] ‘cos I must write so many letters so all the money goes to buy that kinda pens… but I’d like to know what that professional drawing pen is. And are you using that one? Is it ok if I send you 5 Asphyxia 7” , 5 Disharmonic O. 7” and 10 Merciless LP’s + a free copy for you? That’ll cost you £ 155000. You can pay now or when you receive the records at your post-office or when you have sold the records, it’s up to you. The price of 155000 lires sounds really expensive but the postage is included in that price (it’s very high price here t send anything by mail), or if you want it sent by airmail it’ll cost you £167000. I don’t think you’ve heard Dish. Orchestra, they’re Austrian and not many bands are from there, the only band I can listen to from A. Is Pungent Stench but they’re too much Grind I think. Dis.Orch. sounds strange but Pungent S. is much better. But if Pungent Stench is sold in Italian shops and stores already it’ll be too hard for you to sell them. Is the split-LP Dish.Orch/Pungent Stench for sale in Italy? If not, I suggest you to order that one instead of those 7”s. The very best one of these is the Asphyxia 7” but I can’t send you more than 5… I’m sorry but they’re limited (1000 ex) and when I’ve sent you these 5 copies we have only 15 of ‘em 7’s left and we’re the only who have any copies left to sell so only some few people can get them.
Hey man, what the hell are you using on your stamps? I need to know ‘cos the kind of glue (<—?) you have on it can’t be seen unless by someone who suspects it’s glued. We mostly put glue on our stamps before but too often they discovered it at our shitty postoffice and teared them off. It’s shit that we can’t use glued stamps on parcels with records in it. To send out records is our biggest expencies, and if we could, we would have so much lower prices on our records. But the fact is that when we send out parcels with more than 6 records it gotta be some stupid sheet on the side of the carton, that they at the post o. put all the stamps on, and tears off that part of it with the fucking stamps on so the receiver can’t find any stamps on the parcel and of course then can’t send back any stamps. We mainly send out 10 rec’s or more each time cos almost everybody can sell around 10 rec’s… Norway is very expensive in everything, take an example- Sweden is also expensive, compared with the rest of Europe (I know, ‘cos I am from Sweden) but there almost everything is the half price of compared to Norway. Especially it’s much cheaper to send out records or any mail from S. Than from N. I think only Finland and Switzerland and Japan is more expensive than Norway…
I hate to live in Scandinavia and my dream is to come away from this hole. If I’m forced to live the rest of my life in Scandinavia I would choose Iceland or Greenland instead of this shit. I hate almost everybody here and in this local area I hate everybody. If something at all happens in this country it’s there Metalion lives (Slayer mag and some other mags and bands are there) in Sarpsborg, but it’s more than fucking 60 km to that place from here.
Hey about those records, do you also want Malicious Intent, I must say that they aren’t so brutal and not real Death Metal… but that’s up to you of course. I don’t decide what records you shall buy nor what records we shall sell. If it was only I who ordered in vinyls I would throw a big part of what we sell (like yucky Nomed as one example!) but we’re more than only me in DSP. Except the recs I just counted up we have only one that I put value on and that’s the Schizo LP, that you surely can see in every Italian record shop, yeah? We’ll soon get a limited 7” of Carcass imported from Mexico, St. George’s Hall, Bradford 15/11/89, live of course (1000 copies). Personally I hate Carcass and I can’t stand those trendy clone bands but I thought you might be interested + some demos of Dorsal Atlantica (Brazil), limited to 250 copies. I don’t know yet what the price on ‘em’ll be but I’ll inform ya of it.
Do you think you can give me the addresses to Paul Chain and the guy who comes from Transylvania’s Carpatii Palatul…. That made me feel like my brain is bleeding, man! If they don’t mind you give out their addresses of course. It seems to me that Transylvania has stopped in time, not in the cities of course but fuck the cities! You know there are about 1-2 million people in Transyl. who’re of German origins. I heard that they shall speak 15th century-German… And that they still have garlic everywhere to protect the houses from the vampire and rituals to avoid the “stregoica” [Strigoi] to come, and exorcism rituals on “suspected” bodies that can have been killed by a vampire… Do you know if that’s true? I’m only interested in the Carpathian areas of the Transylvanian highland ‘cos there are all the castles. Have you heard of that secret tunnel inside the mountain up to Countess Bathory’s castle? I’m not sure if her castle is “the Mandarin” in the very North (I think in Suceava) or if it’s that one a bit South of “Pandarin” called Csejthe, on the edge of the Carpathia. But however now that tunnel’s exactly destination is forgotten and people’ve been trying to find that tunnel inside the huge mountain — up to the castle- for hundreds of years… I’ve also heard or  read somewhere that not only Bathory was the “special” one who lived there but also lots of other maniacs, killers, vampires, sorcerers and vampires lived there. But only E.Bathory got known of ‘cos of her record in mass murderer. Some witch that’s supposed to be immortal- whose name is Cilorgia shall live in that castle by now. I can read that Bathory was Transylvanian and that she came from a “big” and rich Transylvanian family but the Hungarians claims that she was Hungarian (?)… If I’m not totally wrong, then it shall be turk skeletons impaled left around Vlad Țepeș castle, Hunedoara (a valley beside it with 20000 impaled Turks + some other Vallachians [Wallachians]+Moldavians and more) + a forest with craniums nailed to the trees + remains of boiled people and so on. The typical “Dracula’s” castle are both in Brașov (Bran) and in Brad, which confuses me totally. There shall be heaps of other stories/legends/history/tales (or whatever) than only those about vampyrism like in the Western Carpathians there shall be some cemetery called “Chapel of St. Eisel” (in Somesul it is) where a cranium with horns and fangs was found and it’s thought to bleed whenever a soul is lost to Lucifer. Over that place it shall be some place called “Mount Albac” where some weird oracle shall have been. In the mid-Transylvania, between ‘ the mountains there is a huge swampland that is inhabited and haunted by lots of ghouls. A mountain in Transylvania is called “Funnel of Hades” I don’t know anything more about it but what a brutal name or what! [sounds pretty metal to me] How I hated the ex-dictator Ceausescu (in Romania), he extinguished many ancient ruins and castles there!!!! I’m not concerned by policy at all but that guy wiped away 3 fucking towns to build a royal castle for himself. I’ve heard that the new prime minister there not shall be much better — Ilinescu.
There gotta be some reason of that there are so many different names of vampires in Transylvania, each one is a different sort of vampire. Over here we only know of one name. My goal in life is to visit Transylvania and Moldavia and to learn everything of the legends there that rarely are known of in the West. Also in the Soviet Union it shall be stories told from father-to son since hundred of years ago about their Upir, that isn’t know of outside of Russia. I’ve been obsessed by horror since my fucking birth and it’s been only “worse”, the more I hear about those Eastern legends I wanna move to Transylvania more extremely much more! Do you know if they have colonies of their porphyrians in Transylvania (like with the Leper colonies)? It would be totally great to meet a porphyrian! If they have some particular hidden places for porphyrians there, I wanna live among them, maybe I could get a job as a blood bringer for them… As you probably know, they have (at least they had under Ceausescu) extreme problems in electricity and they could have a lamp lightened for 2 hours each day or so, the weird thing is that it shall be bands there though (but only Heavy Metal). I heard from a friend in Hungary that it shall be a “metal” zine in Transylvania, but I don’t have that address. Do you know some more about Lycanthropy/werewolves? I don’t know much about that anyway. I try to find flowers of that kind that are supposed to be fed by the moon light but I don’t know the name of those flowers. Only of one, but I don’t think it has anything to do with the moon- Wolvesbane, that one is thought to “infect” humans to werewolves, it’s very poisonous anyway. It grows only at very strange places and I doubt it at all exists in Scandinavia… I’d like to collect plants that are superstitions of. I guess the people in-or from Translyvania think that the views, we who’re not from there, have of that place sound strange to them. Especially those vampire movies. So much crap-movies have been produced, only a very few, are of value. Bram Stokers novel “Dracula” made probably the most of how our idea of Dracula looks like still in these years. I think it was wrong done of Stoker to mix all togeather [together] different legends in Transylvania to one “noble man” or aristocrat that he called Dracula. One legend was Vlad Țepeș, the impaler (the only one it’s prooved he really existed) the warlord and the Romanian peoples hero, but he also massacred his own people. Another legend is vampyrism. Or it’s not simply one, actually it’s one kind of a stregoica- sorcerer of the Black Arts that can manage shape-shanging into animals (but not into bats so I don’t know from where came the idea of the vampire-bat) another one is the Nosferatu (Nosferatu means “undead” or “back from the dead”), Drac, Odorofen (orig. name I think), Vrkolak, Vrykolakas (Greek), Draculae, Upir (Russian), Dupir (Turkish) Ordog, Pokol, Vampyr, Whamphyr, Vampir, Dracul (Transyl. Moldavian), Dracula (Vallachian [Wallachian]), murony, muroin and strigoin… and so on and on… I don’t know all of the names, maybe you know some more??? The weirdest thing about vampyrism is that it was so spreaden out, all over the whole world (but in the West Europe not really until about 150 years ago). The idea of that when someone loosing all his blood that also the soul follows with it is really old and someone who then sucks out someone elses blood then must take thet ones soul and keep it. So for thousands of years ago or maybe even longer back in time than that people around the world have had some kind of a vampire tale from that idea of the blood is the soul and life. I can not understand how people of that time could find out the legends of wolf-men... have you ever seen a wolf in a zoo or something like that? The only difference between a wolf and an ordinary dog is that a wolf is wild, got about some 100 times smarter brain and stronger instincs.
We have in Norway-Sweden-Finland-and Russia (Kola half -island) in the north a place called Lappland, in case you don't know, we got some strange animals up there, also wolves (but not so many). Another animal that lives up there is the Musk Ox, it's a kind of "ancient cow" with twisted horns and long hair but they're very rare (I've seen them only once hone I was up there in the very North). I don’t think it was the idea of the wolves themselves that made people find out about werewolves — but their reaction at the full moon. Also humans reacts at the full moon but I think that is growing away more and more ‘cos it was really many generations ago since the humans lived in forests near the nature so now we’re only used to computers and disgusting technology [couldn’t agree more]. Humans adjustment to newer times and hi-tech shit has made our brains different, our instincts are almost gone etc. But I believe that for some hundreds or thousands years ago we could feel alike the animals in many manners. Have you been living alone in a forest for a longer time? Have you then felt how your mind can “turn back” to be more primitive… at least that’s how I feel it then. I’m working on that for example when I need new (old…) and different ideas for lyric material. I’ve tried that out, to sit alone in a lonely and half-broken down cabin in a dark forest, by night. The worst thing about the modern time is the modern way of thinking and too much can be explained. But I must end here. You have now the prices and you know of what records you can order so don’t forget to tell of how many you want and of what you want, ok. So I hope to hear from ya soon, pal. Oh yeah, of course you can send back the copies you eventually can’t get rid of, but if so I suggest you to wait to some time later to see if you can sell ‘em then instead— or in worst case you can send ‘em to someone else in Italy who can buy/sell (we can find one, if so). Be evil — Not openminded! Only Black is true, only Death is Real!
Gore is trend! No fun - No trends! C-ya!

19. April.

So... I graphed how many appearances the entities make across all of The Magnus Archives, very similar to a graph you would see in a Keyan Carlile video. Did I learn how to use excel to do this? Yes. Was it worth the effort? Yes.
In order of appearances from most to least, we have:
Stranger (37), Eye (34), Spiral (28), Web (26), Corruption (22), Flesh (22), Buried (21), Lonely (21), End (18), Desolation (17), Hunt (17), Dark (16), Vast (15), Slaughter (11), Extinction (9)
The wiki was my resource for what entities show up in each episode, however, the last 10 episodes don't have as much written about them leading me to select the entities myself. Some episodes like MAG 20 Desecrated Host had many possible entities listed, so in cases like that I included all of them that could have an active role in the statement. If an entity was only mentioned, like in MAG 80 The Librarian with Jurgen Leitner, I didn't count it. Similarly, some episodes were just plot, but that plot wasn't really connected to fear either, MAG 190 and MAG 199 being examples of that. This only happens a few times, particularly at the very end of the show.
The results make sense overall. Of course, the Stranger appears the most, the Unknowing is what season 3 is building to. Jon is an avatar of the Eye. The Spiral has a fair amount of statements where it's the primary entity, but it also tends to be an element of other statements. The Extinction is an emerging fear, so only having nine appearances is fair. It is a bit odd how little the Slaughter shows up, but it's such a specific fear and it has a lot of similarities with the Flesh and that one covers body horror and gore pretty well.
I have all the data in a spreadsheet in case anybody wanted to see it (why would you?) but this was something I've been wanting to do for a while and I have finally exorcised it from my brain.

Mag 2 + future spoilers Joshua!!! he's such a great character and a great intro to The Buried. I like the other bits that play into of The Buried like how he woke up feeling like he was choking, being "buried" under the burden of the coffin and the complacency of stress, Also I'm not certain if it's true but I feel like the John in this statement that gives him the money is John Doe, one of the students from MAG 34 anatomy class? I would have to double check if he has a description that matches up, but his involvement with Breekon and Hope and general Stranger-ness makes me think it's him, but I imagine basic names like John would be common for Stranger entities And that's now making me think about how this is the 2nd ep in a row where we have a character named John that isnt Sims himself. And with how Somanyfuckedupiftruebooks pointed out the parallels of "guy named John survived a traumatizing encounter encounter while living in Bournemouth where someone else died in his place, and moved to London to get a job and pretend it did not happen" makes me think that this being one of the first true statements Jon reads might not be a coincidence. Either being foreshadowing from writter Johnny himself or The Web already messing with things And also! here is the updated Obsidian Vault graph (color key on the right side)

Ahhh so many delicious parallels!
Can't wait to see how your graph develops overtime!

Boring Writers Stuff
Tumblr media
People ask full-time writers what we do during the day. The short answer is check our podcast on our website for the complete answer (link in bio). We've done 150 episodes on the complex monster called being a creative literary artist. The longer answer starts with the business side of writing. It's is a time suck and it happens every day. There's lot of overhead going to releasing and managing our catalog on five platforms, plus there's always the joy/wonder of doing social media (ugh).
But the actual writing still needs to be done. You can't have a book publishing company without new books.
The graph shows my progress over the last month on Maggie Book 3 (red) and the Space Epic (blue). I'm averaging about 1100 total words per day. The three gaps are a sick day, Christmas, & NY Day (but I promise I was working on the business side on those days, even when I was sick).
The "1100 WPD" thing bugs me, but there's no getting around the need to actually have something to write about. That's why you see stretches of blue (Space Epic) versus red (Mag B3) because I was inspired to work on blue those days. It probably won't last. I can see a blue wall coming up, so when that happens, blue will stop and I'll work on red.
If I push myself, I can do 2k words in about three hours, but that doesn't happen often. I'm glad when I hit 1100 words for the day because that leaves the rest of the day for the business and Real Life. To be honest, though, there are days when the boulder called "writing" that I'm pushing up the hill seems to get heavier as I get closer to the top, so I try to stay focused on the page in front of me and not think too deeply about what I'm doing.
If you're a writer, what are your thoughts on this? Feel free to post replies, questions, and such. Take care of you and have a wonderful 2024.

So I'm a bit frustrated with people's drivers ratings right now. I know it's personal and people can have different opinions, but I honestly look at most of them and can't help but go "Kevin will never be good enough for you, will he?!" I mean, I can admit that he has made mistakes and he definitely haven't been perfect, but the way people talk about him is just making me frustrated and angry.
I don't understand, Kevin has basically beaten all of his teammates (except Jenson) but every time the season ends, the narrative is: "his teammate wasn't very good anyway". Or like this year, where people say he should have beaten Mick with more, because he is "basically a rookie", which I find to be completely nonsense, but anyway.
Now I dread Nico coming in and Kevin beating him, so people will just say that it's because Nico is too old and past it. It seems like he can never win. Maybe he should let Nico get a few wins against him to prove that he still got it 😭🤷‍♀️
Sorry for the rant, i love your blog. Have a nice evening ❤
welcome to the pain of being a k-mag stan ❤️
but no, i totally get your frustration. it's the same frustration that i've dealt with at the end of almost all formula 1 seasons since 2014. for example, watching tommos video on qualifiers and him rating zhou, albon and sainz as faster qualifiers than k-mag. like are you actually kidding me? the man just got a fucking pole in a haas, beating 8 out of the 10 drivers in q3, all in much faster cars and he beat his teammate like 4 to 1 in qualifying - and he is being put in the bottom lower half of the grid in terms of qualifying 🤡
unfortunately, this has kind of always been the case with kevin. when he does something extraordinary, people praise him that day and then they forget entirely. even when his stats show that he is beating his teammate in so many different ways, people completely disregard it, yes, and it's so annoying. for example, with jenson then they basically went 50/50 on qualifying, but kevin was on average 0.2 faster than jenson in qualifying for the whole season. and he was a 21-year-old rookie against a former world champion who had been in f1 for 14 years. kevin had not even driven a f2 car before being put into a f1 car. and he did that - and people still treat his 2014 season as some kind of huge disappointment. they also completely disregard that mclaren wanted to continue with kevin, but because of infighting then jenson was retained instead.
it is the same we see with mick now where people are like "oh, mick has been faster than him". like look at the graph below. when mick has beaten him, most of the time, they have not even been near top 10. and it doesn't even include sprints where kevin has scored points every single time, which means he has been in top 8 three times more from what you can see below.
Tumblr media
it's the single stat where mick has done better than him (and yet some people only focus on this irrelevant fact), but it also completely disregards the races where kevin has been forced to take another pitstop, spending close to 40 seconds in pit to get his front wing fixed, or when he has had car issues or when haas has fucked up his strategy like putting the wrong tyres on his car (oh no, not even making the wrong call, but actually putting the wrong tyres on him). also by the way, no one is talking about how the fia has basically admitted to them being wrong about the use of the meatball flag and them having admitted that to haas. imagine if the fia had ruined charles' race three times in a season. it would be the greatest scandal of the season, but no motorsports media sites give a shit because it's just k-mag and haas🙄
people did not even care when he could keep up with, and even beat in some cases, a former world champion with 14 years of experience as very young rookie, so i suppose they will never care about who he beats. but of course, if nico beats him then i'm sure they will all care and make fun of him despite the fact that nico is a good and respected driver. but yeah, it's the curse of being a kevin fan. i think most people agree that he is deserving of a f1 seat, but they sort of just shrug their shoulders and then throw their love at the usual drivers.
i do not know what more kevin should do to be considered for teams higher up the grid. i know that ferrari had their eyes on him in 2018 when they had doubts about charles, and that red bull offered him a toro rosso seat, but i just wish people would respect him more. and he is still improving. whenever he has a season where he has a flaw, he usually corrects it by the next season. once, he was not considered a super good qualifier, then he fixed that. he was criticised for killing his tyres too quickly when at renault, he fixed that for next year in haas and became known for it. he was criticised for crashing too much and doing too much damage to the car, this season he is the third "cheapest" driver on the grid when it comes to the cost of car damage.
and i'm confident that if kevin had been french, alpine would have given him the seat instead of pierre 🤷🏻‍♀️ i think being danish is one of the things that kinda counts against him since we have no ties with motorsport and formula 1. and that shit matters as proven by the fact that everyone is already saying mick to audi just because he is german. but yeah, my best advice is just to roll your eyes at it and ignore the "experts" who spend 80% of the time only watching the top teams without doing proper research on everybody else.

the skill mags and paperbacks you’ve sent have been a delight, none of them were things i would have picked up on my own but i have loved them all! if you run across any cool iron or sew-on patches those spark great joy. stupid novelty cat toys for the chief henchwoman. NASA/space race paraphernalia. postcards are always aces, unused stationery esp blank cards are great (always a slut for weird vintage deadstock). love a map/chart/graph. bandannas or light scarves.

Wait wait wait wait. I mean this completely earnestly. Can you walk me through Shinada/Mine? I need to know how that works. Need.
Of course, we have to defy canon swan song'ing off roof tops with white guys for this to happen. So it's not only a rare pair, but it's also crack.
I imagine it starting out as Daigo introducing them. "Mine, this is my classmate from high school that i went to juvie for and he doesn't even remember me. Shinada, this is my best friend and lover who without him I would be hemorrhaging money like crazy."
And at first Mine just can't stand Shinada and can't figure out why he's so fucking broke all the time despite working? But then figures out he's pretty good with statistics and graphs (I still can't figure out why the fuck he's writing rag mag articles when he has that under his hat) and puts him to work. And what do you know, Shinada grows on him.
Shinada in his eager beaver way just thinks Mine is super cool and good-looking. He overlooks being mean mugged because working with Mine gets him nice meals and better pay 😭

Hi, ate! I'm an incoming college student. Any tips abt productivity. 🪴
I think it’s important that you know your learning style - whether you’re an auditory learner, visual learner, kinaesthetic or “read/write” learner. If you don’t know yet, there are a lot of tests online that you could take. Knowing this - you could build your study habits and routines around what learning approach works best for you. Alam mo kung mas effective ba sayo note-taking, pag color code ng highlighters, pag gamit ng flashcards, pakikinig ng lectures, etc. Result: hindi sayang oras mo because you know HOW you learn best.
Take me for example: I am a visual learner - I make flashcards whenever I can, I learn better with graphs or any visual stimulation, I make concept maps, and I color code my notes. I play brown noise to cancel out any other noise as I am easily distracted by sounds. I make to-do lists because it helps me visualize my progress.
I’d also like to share this, I got this from my friend: “Patulan mo na” — this has been my mantra for a while now. We always encounter this when we talk of dating, “ay sige patulan ko na” , “patulan mo na yan”. WE NEED THAT MINDSET. Except not on guys, but on readings. When you’re 50-50 about studying - patulan mo na. When you can’t seem to start - game na patulan mo na. Andyan na yan patulan mo na haha. Because you’re not going to feel motivated all the time.
And then the usuals…
Use pomodoro, and if you have time - animedoro hahaha. Right now I use lifeat.io — it has pomodoro timer, different calming backgrounds, to-do list, different sounds, you can play yt videos/spotify playlists, and I use it to study with my friends kase may vc. 10/10 recommend it.
Try not to use your phone that much when you’re studying. I have this app: focus quest. It’s pomodoro din but also you can’t use your phone during focus time. Plus it’s a game type of timer/focus app - very entertaining kase in order to like level up kelangan mo mag focus. It’s cute.
Another app I use is Habitica - to help me build good habits. Also for my to-do lists. Because the only way all this would be normal for you is if you do it regularly - make it a habit.
Also have scheduled breaks. “Scheduled” being the operative word. If you don’t make time for breaks, trust me, your body WILL MAKE TIME for breaks. Mabuburnout ka, magbbreakdown, magkakasakit or magrerevenge bedtime procrastination. At hindi mo alam kelan ka magiging okay to study ulet.
Pero all this is for when I REALLYYYY need to study - enjoy-in mo college life mo. Mag inom ka ng malala haha

ETH, BNB, and XRP showcased bullish metrics, suggesting price upticks. DOGE was lying low while SHIB’s price surged by over 2% in the last 24 hours.   Major altcoins like Ethereum [ETH], BNB Chain [BNB], and Ripple [XRP] have been disappointing investors for quite some time now with their slow-moving performances. However, if the latest data is to be considered, things might take a U-turn soon. Read Ethereum’s [ETH] Price Prediction 2023-24 But as we enter the last quarter of 2023, the crypto market has the potential to turn volatile, and here’s how. Is the altcoin market getting ready for a bull run? Mags, a popular crypto analyst, recently posted a tweet revealing details about the current market condition. As per the tweet, the altcoin market cap has been trading inside a massive Wyckoff accumulation pattern. #Altcoin Bull Run Is Finally Here ?? 🔥 The Altcoin Market Cap has been trading inside a Massive Wyckoff Accumulation Pattern 📈 This Pattern consists of 5 Phases : • PHASE A : This phase marks the end of the downtrend as supply weakens after intense selling. • PHASE B :… pic.twitter.com/h9B9e0YfHh — Mags (@thescalpingpro) September 30, 2023 This pattern consists of five phases. At press time, the chart was in the fourth phase, named D. During this phase, the price will reportedly move at least to the upper resistance lines as demand takes over. After the completion of Phase D, Phase E will take over, in which the price will break out, demand will be in full control, and the uptrend will be obvious to everyone. Doubts still remain Though the aforementioned data looked optimistic, a closer look at the top altcoins provided a better understanding of what might be ahead. For instance, Ethereum, which is the largest altcoin by market capitalization, failed to breach the $1,700 mark of late. At the time of writing, ETH was trading at $1,686.51 with a market cap of over $202 billion. CryptoQuant’s data revealed that ETH’s exchange reserve was increasing, meaning that the token was under selling pressure at press time. Source: CryptoQuant Another bearish signal was that ETH‘s total number of coins transferred has decreased by -57.66% in the last 24 hours. Additionally, its takers buy/sell ratio was also in the red, suggesting that selling sentiment was dominant in the derivatives market at the time of writing. This further increased the chances of a downtrend in the days to follow. A look at how other altcoins are doing  While ETH’s performance was underwhelming, the second-largest altcoin, BNB, also failed to surprise investors. As per CoinMarketCap, BNB only moved marginally over the last 24 hours. At the time of writing, it was trading at $215.89 with a market cap of over $33 billion. But BNB’s MACD displayed a bullish crossover, which hinted at a more volatile price movement towards the north. Its Relative Strength Index (RSI) also registered an uptick and was headed above the neutral mark. Nonetheless, its Money Flow Index (MFI) went the other way around as it dropped. Source: TradingView Though a few of the market indicators were in BNB bulls’ favor, its social metrics soared. As per LunarCrush, BNB’s social engagement soared by more than 33% last week. Additionally, its Altrank and bullish sentiment also improved considerably last week, suggesting a price uptrend soon. A similar slow-moving trend was also seen on XRP’s graph, which merely moved in the last 24 hours in terms of price. After a massive spike, XRP’s trading volume also dropped. But the good news was that its 1-week price volatility was up. The token’s Binance Funding Rate also remained green, reflecting its popularity in the derivatives market. Source: Santiment More bullish indicators were revealed upon checking XRP’s daily chart. As per TradingView, XRP’s Chaikin Money Flow (CMF) gained upward momentum. Apart from that, the token’s Relative Strength Index (RSI) also moved upwards, giving hope for a price uptick in the days to follow. At the time of writing. XRP was trading at $0.5207, with a market cap of over $27 billion.
Source: TradingView Are the memecoins gaining momentum? While mentioning altcoins, it’s important to also include top memecoins such as Dogecoin [DOGE] and Shiba Inu [SHIB]. Notably, both memecoins did not show any sign of decoupling. Their daily charts were in the green, but SHIB’s price went up by nearly 2% in the last 24 hours, which was encouraging. Is your portfolio green? Check out the ETH Profit Calculator     At the time of writing, SHIB was trading at $0.000007473, while DOGE had a value of $0.06266. Therefore, considering the performance of all the major altcoins, the possibility of a bull rally in October can’t be ruled out. However, as the crypto market is infamous for its unpredictability, the way the market moves in the coming days will be intriguing to watch.
