📠 H2n: Foreign Instructions, Faxed Memory

Test fragments from the Zoom H2n manual, run through the thermal fax machine — German and Chinese editions. Stripped of full comprehension. Translated then retranslated. Flattened. Glitched. Reduced to symbols and layout logic.

These copies will likely feature in the Process Zine H2n spread — not as instructions, but as artefacts of misunderstanding. The choice to use non-English versions reflects a larger theme behind signal // noise: → being deaf in a hearing world → lipreading without language → hearing without comprehension → captioning delayed, distorted, or gone

The machine speaks. You just don’t know how to listen.

The act of faxing itself became part of the piece: recorded via the Zoom H2n in XY mode. Plastic rollers, hums, feeding mechanisms. A sonic body of the communication glitch.

This is about non-meaning as design. Language as texture. Data as residue. The manual that doesn’t teach. The diagram that doesn’t explain. The signal that arrives, but can’t decode.

how do you turn your black line art into coloured line art? trying to get a feel for it but i'm struggling in determining what's the most effective method

i USED to do it by hand but then i discovered this lovely little thang, an auto-action for clip studio paint that just. does it for me. i've been really enjoying the black outer-lines and colored inner-lines lately, so how i've been doing it is like this: 1.) use the auto action on my flat colors layer to create a dark + saturated clipping layer 2.) move the newly created colored clipping layer above my lines....coloring them. i usually spend time tweaking these colors w/ hue + saturation adjustments and manual touchups, but for the sake of a visual tutorial in gif form i didn't here outside of re-adding the white to the eyeshines.

3.) select the line layer and expand the selection by two or three pixels. 4.) reselect the colored lines clipping layer. 5.) use ctrl+x to cut the now selected out edges of the colored lines, showing the black lines underneath

and then from there i'll sometimes add more outlines/drop shadows/ect or change the black to just a very dark saturated color, based on the Vibe. i hiiiiighly recommend clip studio paint + it's awesome auto actions forever because of how much time it saves (also also how fun they are to use)

for real WHERE does the idea that [utdr humans] are nongendered so that "you can project on them" come from. their literal character arcs are about NOT being a blank slate to be filled in by the audience

i think i understand the assumption on some level for undertale, because there is a very intentional effort to make you identify with the "player character" in order to make your choices feel like your own (the beating heart of undertale's metanarrative lies in giving you an alternative path to violence against its enemies after all, and whether you're still willing to persue it for your own selfish reasons. YOUR agency is crucial).

of course, the cardinal plot twist of the main ending sweeps the rug from under your feet on that in every way, and frisk's individuality becomes, in turn, a tool to further UT's OTHER main theme: completionism as a form of diegetic violence within the story. replaying the game would steal frisk's life and happy ending from them for our own perverse sentimentality, emotionally forcing our hand away from the reset button.

i think their neutrality absolutely aids in that immersion. but also, there's this weird attitude by (mostly) cis fans where it being functional within the story makes it... somehow "editable" and "up to the player" as well? which is gross and shows their ass on how they approach gender neutrality in general lol.

but also like. there's plenty of neutral, non PCharacters in undertale and deltarune. even when undertale was just an earthbound fangame and the player immersion metanarrative was completely absent, toby still described frisk as a "young, androgynous person". sometimes characters are just neutral by design. it's not that hard to understand lol.

anyone who makes this argument for kris deltarune is braindead. nothing else to say about it.

gonna need to start getting epsom salt again soon for my legs. it's crazy how when I did wfh or even just being unemployed I still managed to go to like. practices and games pretty regularly and I'd really exert myself, but no matter how much I try to stay moving around in restaurants, the standing work just always devastates my legs

-->With the selling day finally done, I had Smiler take a moment to tune up Marm (whose durability was slowly failing) while Victor and Alice cleaned up all the out-of-stock signs around the store, then sent everyone home at 9 PM. An exhausted Victor was promptly sent to bed, while Alice finished off the final bites of her spinach frittata from lunch before it went bad (as she could super-speed her way to it faster than it could spoil) before joining him. Smiler, feeling flirty thanks to the nearness of their partner, wandered into the living room to sculpt the bonsai there into a heart, while Marm cleaned up Alice’s plate for her, took a moment to pet Shock (making friends with the cat, aw), then flew outside to rake up all the leaves falling around the property, with a quick break to feed Toothy. *nods* Good robot. I thus sent Smiler to play chess once they were done with the bonsai (mostly because they’d swapped moods from Flirty to Focused, and they could use the Logic) and prepared to end the day –

Cue me waking Victor up to Repairio the lot of them, and Alice waking up in turn to react to his magic skills. Which would have annoyed me more if they weren’t already both at full energy thanks to their amazing bed. XD So instead of forcing them to go back to sleep, I sent Alice downstairs to read a werewolf book (she wanted to read a book as a want, and I figured I might as well try to unlock the werewolf power that lets her read secret werewolf writings), and set Victor on upgrading one of the upstairs bathroom sinks with an automatic soap dispenser. Meaning the session actually ended on Marm stopping his raking to get in some more recharge time in the backyard, and Victor completing the sink upgrade and getting maxed Handiness skill in the process! Yay! :D

And that is that! As you can see, Marm is still having a little trouble finding his place in this family. Partly because I'm still adjusting to having four Sims to take care of, not three, and partly because he spends a good portion of every day unconscious for one reason or another. *shakehead* But he is still part of this family, and we will make it work! Perhaps a family-focused holiday will help him fit in better? Join us next time to see how the gang handles Harvestfest!
