I'm so sorry that I asked you to repeat a question & answered it halfway through you repeating it.
It will happen again.

One actual drawback to developing an interest in smaller local artists as a probably low-intermediate language learner with shitty hearing/auditory processing: good luck finding published lyrics!
Brought to you by another afternoon of " I can only make out a few words and phrases here and there. But it sounds pretty cool, and I will of course try to sing along regardless."

I will sing praises to disabled for disabled relationships til the end of time and still be frustrated with my therapist that she said “You don’t need to communicate better. You’re hard of hearing and have auditory processing issues and your partner has sensory issues and wears noise cancelling headphones half the time and both of you have ADHD. You need to solve the physical disability problem”
Like brah, I know we both cant process verbal information for shit but hear me out
#also my hearing aids have been not working optimally for a couple weeks#cause my hearing aid cleaner thingy broke#but like still rude of her to say it’s a physical disability problem#like we don’t feel heard cause we literally don’t hear each other#lol we really need to return to just texting each other more often#but then we don’t see texts#hoh#auditory processing#adhd#neurodivergent#disability#accessibility

Working customer service with auditory processing issues is asking customers to spell things out or show you a picture after the customer has already told you more than twice what they want.

situational mutism and hating voice
auditory "aberrant efferent activity during vocalization is implicated in SM maintenance."
this means perception of sound of own voice.
"Self-report of children with SM describing peculiarity in the perception of their own voice such as ‘my voice sounds funny and I don’t want others to hear it’ (Black and Uhde, 1992) or ‘my brain won’t let me speak because my voice sounds strange’ (Boon, 1994) provided initial anecdotal support to our conjecture."
source: Henkin and Bar-Haim, 2015
folks with sm often have speech problems that make them aware and self conscious of own voice. or maybe were criticised/mocked for it.
am very aware of how voice sounds, and have developed belief that it is fundamentally strange-sounding, unchangeable, irredeemable and wrong.
thought this was just the voice dysphoria but no. constantly think about how voice is going to sound before speak, and this stops me saying certain words, especially “hi” also harder to initiate conversations because of it. when just responding to someone, it’s like less confrontational and there’s more chance of them hearing you, because they’re already focused on you.
also always negatively evaluate own voice after speaking. brain just replays it over and over in head. hate it. think also being trans makes more anxiety because scared of being clocked by voice, and all the negative consequences that could bring. 🌹🌹
#my aac voice on the other hand. cannot tell you about how much euphoria!!!!#selective mutism#voice dysphoria#auditory processing#it is way way too warm where i am. melting. kept drinking coffee bc didn't know why was so tired. turns out was the heat.#drink water folks

passively listening to music meaning you haven't made the conscious choice to specifically listen to the lyrics
(bonus: tag your answer and what kind of music you usually listen to)
I'm asking because i can almost never hear lyrics unless the singer has really good diction and I'm wondering if I'm in the minority or not
reblog for containment sample breach size etc. etc.

anyone else with hearing or auditory processing problems ever get so used to having the tv volume super low because you cant tell if its loud enough to annoy other people that you learn to fill in voices and noise via captions and context and sometimes watch tv with the volume at like level 3 and not even notice that you cant actually hear it
#yesterday i was watching gotham and the volume was low and for a second i was like#wait#i cant actually hear this#but i have been hearing it#in my brain#whats going on#auditory processing#auditory processing issues#hearing problems

As someone with sometimes-not-so-great auditory processing, I feel a little resentment of the way, ever since Taxi Driver, the phrase “are you talking to me?” has carried a kind of aggressive, thuggish tone. I am often honestly confused about who is and isn’t talking to me.
(I don’t think most people I say this to recoil in fear that I’m about to pull .38 special on them, but still.)

Does anyone else panic when you're having a conversation with someone and they're taking faster than what you can understand?
It's like everyone's brain is using Google, but I'm running Internet Explorer.
I barely have any social skills to begin with, but now you're talking way too fast & I feel dumb asking you to slow down & repeat it.
#text post#ramble#neurodivergent#autism#autistic#auditory processing#auditory processing disorder#I think a lot of my past teachers probably thought I was really awkward when they had 1 on 1 conversations with me#b/c I had to rush some sucky response after I spent way too long processing what they said#or maybe they didn't care and I'm really overthinking this...

Prompted by it coming up that have been listening to a lot more voice audio recordings lately: yes, that is mostly working now! Headphones seem to be enough to get around the worst of the auditory processing weirdness, if I do pay extra attention to listening.
The situation is enough better overall that I am actually enjoying listening to podcasts and audio books.
Obviously, the accumulated eardrum scarring, etc. is not going anywhere. But, since the base problem accidentally got fixed? There at least isn't more damage happening. And it's amazing how much better you can hear when you're not going around with at least one ear constantly blocked up to some extent. Who'da thunk it? 😵💫
The lack of dizziness and periodically staggering around like a drunk has been kinda nice too, of course. Even a lot of the tinnitus has quieted down. But, those aren't as directly connected to being able to follow a podcast.

selective mutism: inhibition, DSI, speech and language
🌹🌹 i remember when could speak a lot in one major setting, and had slurred words a lot. to the point was repeating self so much because people didn't understand. wrote it off as "can't articulate words fully"
but now starting to realise: problems are problems, regardless of whether you have words for them.🌹🌹
long post with information
"Most, if not all, of the distinctive behavioral characteristics that children with Selective Mutism portray can be explained by the studied hypothesis that children with inhibited temperaments have a decreased threshold of excitability in the almond-shaped area of the brain called the amygdala. When confronted with a fearful scenario, the amygdala receives signals of potential danger (from the sympathetic nervous system) and begins to set off a series of reactions that will help individuals protect themselves."
"Some children with Selective Mutism have Sensory Processing Disorder (DSI) which means they have trouble processing specific sensory information. They may be sensitive to sounds, lights, touch, taste and smells. Some children may have difficulty modulating sensory input which may affect their emotional responses. DSI may cause a child to misinterpret environmental and social cues. This can lead to inflexibility, frustration and anxiety. The anxiety experienced may cause a child to shut down, avoid and withdraw from a situation, or it may cause him/her to act out, have tantrums and manifest negative behaviours"
"Some children (20-30%) with Selective Mutism have subtle speech and/or language abnormalities such as receptive and/or expressive language abnormalities and language delays. Others may have subtle learning disabilities, including auditory processing disorder. In most of these causes, the children have inhibited temperaments (prone to shyness and anxiety). The added stress of the speech/language disorder, learning disability, or processing disorder may cause the child to feel that much more anxious and insecure or uncomfortable in situations where there is an expectation to speak."
"more studies are necessary to fully assess speech/language abnormalities and Selective Mutism as well as processing disorders and Selective Mutism. It is important to not that there are many children with Selective Mutism who are early speakers without any speech delays/disorders or processing disorders."

Auditory train phenomenon
I am riding the TransPennine Express. Doncaster to Manchester. Sitting next to me are a family talking an African language I don’t recognise. I wonder where they are travelling. My destination is Ben Gurion, via Budapest. Our lives contract and expand, explode in an infinity of possibilities. Actions and interaction, auditory, visual and tactile, we generate time and movement through…
