The Incredible Hulk (2008)

So, it's no secret that Edward Norton got dropped and swapped for Mark Ruffalo in the MCU. That said, there is a small scene at the end of the movie that does connect, as well as some more recent references back to both the Abomination and Samuel Sterns, make it still a necessary part of this insane quest.

Plus, Edward Norton is a good actor and I enjoyed the movie the first time, so might as well.

I'm not going to be able to stop myself from comparing Norton's Hulk to Ruffalo's, so I'm just going to be direct about it. Both have a sadness but Norton's is more desperate and striving, where Ruffalo's is more depressed and resigned. While I like Norton's acting, I actually am glad in this case they switched to Ruffalo (all the drama notwithstanding- I'll actually say it sounds like Norton may have gotten a raw deal from the studios) because I think Mark fits better with the team. Mark Ruffalo's strength is he CAN blend into the background and NOT be forgotten. He can be part of a team, not the star, and yet you still care about him, still WANT to know what happens to him.

Norton can't. His acting demands attention from the audience and I mean that in an absolutely positive way. When Edward Norton is on screen, you CANNOT pay attention to anything or anyone not directly interacting with him. For someone normally so softspoken, his presence is commanding and I cannot see how that would have jived with the rest of the Avengers' cast.

All right, on to the movie.

I've got to start off discussing the grittiness again. That's the word that just stands out to me on these re-watches: the first movies are gritty. They're dark. The banter is there but there is an undercurrent of living in a rotten world . I'm watching for when this changes and shifts, because I know it does. I didn't have that feeling when I went to The Marvels or when I've been watching Loki- Season 2. (Yes, I am also watching new stuff because I live in the real world and want to discuss that stuff with friends and could never complete my ENTIRE MCU GOD DANG IT challenge in a timely fashion.)

Thinking about it, these first two movies feel like they fit in the Venom universe more than the actual MCU. Hmm.

On a more comic note, I joked with a friend that the title of this film should be changed to "The Incredible Running Man." The amount of shots just of people running, especially at the beginning, is crazy.

Tim Roth as Emil Blonsky/the Abomination is really compelling. I found this doubly interesting as I noted how much smaller (stature wise) he is than many of the other soldier actors. His fire as a fighter stands out even though he's NOT the epitome of brawn.

The writers depictions of women in this movie frustrated me this round. First of all, I count 3 females TOTAL. We have Liv Tyler as Betty Ross, we have the 1 female soldier (that's it- we get one people) and she's outright called a bitch by Blonsky's character, and we get Marianna, the ONE (again- really- there were no other female actors?) female at the factory. I'm sure there will be some excuse about this making Betty stand out or whatever (never mind that that doesn't stop them from having plenty of male actors in movies where the female hero is the focus). But what doubly frustrates me is that Betty is supposed to be this super scientist and yet she does really dumb stuff. The big one for me on this was when they pawned the necklace to be able to travel to Sterns (because they only had $40) and she BUYS A DIGITAL CAMERA. Guys, this was 2008- digital cameras weren't cheap. Phone cameras SUCKED at that time, if you even had one. Why would she EVER have spent that money? Because the director wanted to have her look at a photo later, that's why. (I want just 1 single mom on a budget in ever writer's room to say things like "They wouldn't do that, you morons.")

I liked the use of the smartwatch with the pulse tracker both when I first watched it and now. That is a factor I kind of wish they would have kept in some way- though I know they went more with the "I'm always angry" method.

Time for a sidebar- there's a LOT of internet discussion about what it means to be worthy in terms of wielding Thor's hammer. I haven't stumbled as much into discussions about anger and Hulk's "powers." The closest was the discussions about the scene in She-Hulk (which I haven't seen at all, except for that clip where he's trying to teach her how to control it and is frustrated at how easily she manages). I think anger is an emotion that doesn't get dissected enough. It's usually labeled as bad and thrown in the bin. But anger can be good- it can propel someone to make changes or stand up for what's right. This movie does a great job of showing that a LOT of Hulk's anger only really rears up when Betty is in danger. It's a protective impulse, not a destructive one. Obviously, unchecked, it's terrible and terrifying but within proper contexts, anger can be its own superpower.

This one overall did feel a bit slower on the re-watch, but I do think the fact that I now know it doesn't connect as much to the others made me impatient. It's still a solid film and worthy to see if you haven't.

biography:

mackenzie marie mckinnon was born to a very proud pureblood family. her parents, marianna and phillip met at hogwarts and were sweethearts. their hearts were set on each other from the very beginning. both families approved of the union. everything was perfect. they couldn’t have asked for anything better. the wedding was huge and full of life. and before they knew it, they had this beautiful daughter. they named her mackenzie and brought her up to be respectful, kind and to follow the rules.

while her parents were purebloods and tried their best to uphold the pureblood values, they never forced it upon her or required that she follow any type of strict guideline.

but from a very young age, mackenzie was rebellious and the exact opposite of what they’d desired. she was loud, constantly got messy and was so sassy that neither knew what to do. but there was one thing they absolutely loved about their daughter. she was so incredibly passionate in everything she did. it didn’t matter what it was, she wouldn’t stop until it was done.

her parents love her with all their heart and they’d never wish anything bad upon her. they just wish she would chill out sometimes and stop making a big deal about everything. it definitely got her into quite a lot of trouble in school.

mackenzie hated being called mackenzie. she always felt it made her sound like some royal princess and she never wanted to be a princess. no, she wanted to be a warrior or a doctor or something that would show people how helpful and powerful she could be. so, it was kenzie, or kenz. the only people who are allowed to call her mackenzie without getting hexed are her parents. she rarely introduces herself as mackenzie anymore either.

during school, she did very well, knowing that any job she wanted, she’d need good grades. she was on the quidditch team, but still managed to find friends that loved to pull pranks and have the best time. her parents constantly worried that her getting in trouble and getting into detention would cause her grades to fall, but it never did. kenzie made sure her grades stayed high, even though she liked to cause trouble.

the amount of howlers this girl received, should’ve been some kind of record, but she laughed them off every time, because aside from getting into detention for pulling pranks and having a blast, she was an exceptional student. so where was the issue?

after hogwarts, she took a year and travelled around europe and africa, trying to sort her life out. kenzie had no idea what she wanted to do. there were so many options and so many things her parents wanted her to be. but it wasn’t until she stopped in a small village in africa that she knew what her purpose was. there were so many young kids, sick, losing their families. kenzie couldn’t take it. she vowed to do everything she could to make sure they had the best chance possible.

kenzie then became a healer without any hesitation. her entire life is devoted to making sure everyone else has the best chance they can get.

personality:

kenzie is so full of sass. she’s got a comeback for almost everything and doesn’t like to take no for an answer. she will stick with something until she gets exactly what she wants out of it, no matter what. this can be very troublesome for her, but she doesn’t care. kenzie is the type of girl you can call at 3 am for an adventure and she’ll be right there. but this may also be because she’s a complete and total insomniac. but she adores adventure, fun and excitement. if you can’t find her, she’s probably off doing something that could very well be dangerous. she fully believes life isn’t worth living if you’re not having a blast doing it. if you’re her friend, she will protect you until the end of the earth and fight for you harder than most people. don’t get into an argument with her, ‘cause i’m telling you, this girl won’t back down. but because of this, she has lost quite a few friends. kenzie is very stern and aggressive when she’s trying to defend a friend or even herself. this is part of her problem. she doesn’t always know how to chill.

9. Travel. Does your character like to travel outside of Vesuvia? How often? For how long? What kinds of things do they do away from home?

pregame, laurel has never visited anywhere or been outside of vesuvia. she always longed to travel, would sit at the dockside and watch the ships come in and out of port, dreaming about the day that perhaps she could steal her way onto one and visit some far off land like the ones she read about in books. after her aunt died and left her burdened with the responsibility of running their shop, laurel always assumed that she would die in vesuvia just as she was born there. and for a while that remained true.

though she doesn’t remember her childhood wanderlust, laurel is ecstatic, if a bit hesitant at first, to travel with nadia and julian. anywhere a ship can take them, and the longer the better, all the more chances she gets to spend at sea, learning (read: pestering) the crew for sailing tips and stories. where they go or what they do hardly matter so long as she has good company with her.

19. Memory. Has your character gotten any of their memory back? If so, what? Did it change them?

laurel is very committed to the concept of regaining whatever memories she can, no matter the cost. to her, her past is the missing piece of her puzzle, everything else she ever wanted slotted together so perfectly except for that dark cloud just hanging in her periphery. especially as the others around her start to regain theirs, especially memories of her.

she has a theory though, a concept yet to come to fruition, and she hopes that with the help of her loves and her friends, that something good will come of it.

20. Family. Talk about your character’s family. Who were they?

for her whole remembered and unremembered life, laurel’s only family was her great-aunt marta. marta was her mother, marianna lobban’s, aunt, the sister of laurel’s maternal grandmother.

marta lobban was a stern but gentle guardian, not free with affection but not intentionally cruel either. marta taught her everything laurel knows about magic, and helped her curb her more impulsive powers.

marianna lobban is the figment of laurel’s dreams, the mother she never met. laurel was always told by her aunt that her mother left laurel as an infant in marta’s care to chase after laurel’s birth father and never returned.

laurel’s father was a man known only to marianna. roland “rollo” dashiel was a cad of a sailor who enjoyed seducing young women. unfortunately, marianna was a young woman who loved to be seduced. their affair was bright and blinding, and left young, 18 year old marianna with a child she was not equipped to care for while rollo went off, entirely unaware of the consequences.

in certain aus, however, things aren’t quite so dire.

in her many joint canons with our dear morgan here’s rory, she often shares a father in stefan tanner. the circumstances are often slightly different, but stefan and marianna are, in a word, true soul mates. in these universes, be it late or early in life, they find one another a build a family and that family includes laurel and rory being siblings, along with rory’s canonical brother riley, and their youngest brother lyndon.

of the siblings, laurel and rory are often the closest in age and are desperately close (to a degree bordering on codependency one might say, but that one is a jerk and their opinions do not matter). it is in these aus that laurel gets what she has always dreamed of: a full and loving family. she is deeply devoted to and protective of three of her brothers, usually being the eldest of the four. even if they drive her up the wall, rory especially, she would do anything for them.

Marianna was born October 10 to father Romano Vasquez and mother Adrianna Vasquez in Roswell, New Mexico. Her mother taught art at the local elementary school while her father was the mayor of their small town.The Vasquez family was known for the events and charity galas they hosted regularly, as well as for the work they did within the community. Most everyone seemed to love the family as people, though her father was not as well liked as her mother. Romano was known for his tough and divisive politics, keeping a stern and firm hand over the whole town. This sometimes made forming real connections and friendships tough for Marianna, as many were hesitant to get close to her due to her father’s work. Growing up, Marianna was groomed to one day follow in her father’s footsteps, to move into a position of local government. While secretly she has always dreamed of being an artist, she felt obligated to conform to her family’s thoughts and wishes. When she was 13-years-old, Marianna’s mother fell ill. Cancer had stricken her, and at a rapid pace she began to deteriorate. She passed away just before Marianna’s 14th birthday. With her mother gone, her father sank deeper into a hole of dispair, which reflected within his politics. Though he kept his position, thoughts and opinions of him seemed to decline with every passing year. Towards the end of things, he was involved in a laundering scandal which threatened to destroy what remained of the family reputation. Though Marianna does not know the outcome of the trial, she believes she was sent to Sydney by her father to spare her from the fallout of his decisions.

What was their fake life like?: Marianna’s fake life is fun, she enjoys her job as a receptionist and feels that her father would be proud of her for carrying on the family ‘business’, involving herself in the politics of the local community as much as possible. Despite opinions of her family, Marianna is sweet and gentle, and truly does love people. She volunteers in the community regularly, and is known for being helpful and kind. She lives alone in an apartment in Newtown, with her cat, Bellsie.

Yva fue una de las primeras fotógrafas profesionales en Alemania hasta que los nazis acabaron con su carrera.

El trabajo de Else Ernestine Neuländer, mejor como conocida como Yva, pasó totalmente desapercibido hasta la década de 1990. Pero cuando su aprendiz, Helmut Newton, visitó la exposición de su maestra en Berlín en 2000,[1] parte de su resplandor ayudó a iluminar una carrera que permaneció durante décadas en la oscuridad.

Primeros años

Else Ernestine Neuländer nació el 26 de enero de 1900 en Berlín[2] en el seno de una familia judia de clase media. Else Ernestine fue ña menor de nueve hermanos, fue hija de una modista y un comerciante.[3] Su padre murió cuando ella tenía doce años y su madre se hizo cargo de la familia confeccionando sombreros.[4]

La formación fotográfica de Else ocurrió, probablemente, en la escuela fotográfica de Letonia (Lettehaus) en Berlín y realizó prácticas durante seis meses en un estudio cinematográfico.[5]

Else tuvo el privilegio de ser una judía de clase media, lo cual le otorgó dos prerrogativas: una educación libertad y cierta libertad para escoger su propio oficio.[6]

Hizo sus primero trabajos de fotografía en el estudio de Heinz Hajek-Halke hacia 1924-1926,[7] pero tuvo una disputa con él por derechos de autor.[8]

Else abrió su primer estudio en el núero 17 de la Friedrich-Wilhelm-Straße 17 y adoptó, a partir de entonces, el seudónimo de “Yva”.[9] [10]

El Berlin de Weimar estaba en pleno apogeo, de modo que no le costó trabajo hacerse de clientela y ganar fama por su originalidad e innovación en el campo del retrato y, más importante aún, la fotografía de modas.

Del estudio a las revistas

Yva ubicó su estudio se localizaba en un lugar favorable, cerca de la avenida Kurfürstendamm[11] y las revistas ilustradas de la época comenzaron a ver sus fotografías con buenos ojos.

En 1927 publicó diez fotografías en Die Dame,[12] hecho que catapultó de manera importante su carrera como fotógrafa de modas. Sus fotos aparecieron entonces en las páginas de revistas como Gebrauchsgraphik y Elegante Welt y Berliner Illustrierte. Por aquella época también gana notoriedad como retratista de figuras públicas.[13] También publicó de manera importante para la editorial berlinesa Ullstein y en la revista UHU tuvo más de 20 publicaciones.

Por aquellos años su hermano, Ernst Neuländer, tenía una agencia de modelos[14] que trabajaba a la par del estudio fotográfico generando una fórmula muy exitosa.

Para finales de la década de 1920 la industria editorial alemana iba en viento en popa,[15] situación que favoreció a Yva. Entonces participa en exposiciones fotográficas a lo largo de Europa como Das Lichtbild (Stuttgart, 1930), la Biennale Internazionale d’Arte Fotografica (Roma, 1933), en La Beauté de la femme de París y la exposición The Modern Spirit in Photography organizada por la London Royal Photographic Society.[16]

Para entonces el estudio de Yva era un hervidero y el epicentro de las sesiones fotográficas más importantes de su tiempo. Mudó su estudio al número 17 de la Bleibtreustraße para luego mudarse (probablemente por el éxito y expansión del estudio) al número 45 de Schlüterstraße.[17]

En 1934 Yva contrae matrimonio con Alfred Hermann Simon, quien abandonaría su propia carrera para convertirse en el gerente del estudio. En esta etapa Yva comienza a experimentar con el color.[18]

Innovación

Aunque hoy se da por hecho el papel de la fotografía en el campo comercial y de la moda, esto no ocurría en la década de 1920. Los anuncios y publicidad solían emplear ilustraciones[19] porque el costo de la reproducción fotográfica er muy elevado. Además, se consideraba que la fotografía tenía un papel más orientado a los hechos y las evidencias propias de los medios noticiosos y del reportaje.

Yva era una fotógrafa con una elevada técnica, una mirada sofisticada y un gran ojo de estilo cinematográfico. Hizo suyo el estilo modernista y combinó las expresiones artísticas surrealistas con una revolución sexual que exaltaba la figura y sensualidad femenina al tiempo que se convertía en una mujer exitosa en la fotografía comercial, campo donde tradicionalmente siempre habían dominado los varones. [20]Yva trastocaba abiertamente con su carrera fotográfica el estereotipo de la mujer que solía ser la modelo y confinada a una actitud pasiva mientras el varón era el ente creativo y activo.[21] [22]

Su fotografía era experimental e innovadora, empleaba una iluminación teatral y refinada; experimentaba con las exposiciones múltibles y llega a disparar hasta siete veces con el mismo negativo.[23] El resultado son imágenes de ensueño, auténtico Traumerëi.[24]

El aprendiz llamado Helmut

En 1936 llegó al estudio un jovencito de 16 años llamado Helmut Neustadter,[25] un muchachito que se sumaba a la trop ade diez empleados en el estudio de Yva. [26]

Aunque se sabe muy poco de Yva, los testimonios de Helmut han sido invaluables para reconstruir la historia de su maestra. El aprendiz reveló que: “Alfred Simon, su esposo, siempre parecía un perfecto idiota y él era el gerente del estudio. Yva hizo fotos de moda, así como retratos de bailarines, actores y actrices. Estaba a cargo de varios catálogos íntimos que tanto me gustaban […] En el estudio, Yva se comportaba como un director de cine. Los asistentes estaban preparando la puesta en escena, pero fue ella quien tomó la foto”.[27]

Helmut Neustadter se convertiría, eventualmente, en Helmut Newton

Helmut Neustadter adoptaría, eventualmente, el nombre de Helmut Newton y se convertiría en uno de los grandes dioses del Olimpo fotográfico.

El comienzo del fin

Desde 1933 el Partido Nazi inicia el cierre de negocios judíos y publica la lista de indeseables. La política nazi era todavía ambigua y el negocio de Yva era mucho más alemán que judío, lleno de clientela teutona y con un pequeño ejército germano de asistentes. Yva tuvo una sensación, equivocada desgraciadamente, de seguridad.[28] Además, ella no percibía ninguna señal de discriminación o anti-semitismo por parte de su clientela. Incluso en aquellos años de crisis política había ampliado su estudio.[29]

Hacia 1935-1936 Yva recibe una oferta para mudarse a Nueva York y trasladarse a Nueva York. Sin embargo, su marido la convenció de quedarse pues creia que la política en Alemania mejoraría y porque, por otro lado, no hablaba inglés. Pero Yva hizo caso a su marido y no aceptó la oferta de Life, decisión que acabó costándole la vida.[30]

Al tiempo que Yva y Alfred permanecían en Berlín, el éxodo de fotógrafos judíos era impresionante: Gisèle Freund se marcha a París y denuncia la violencia nazi; Elli Marcus también abre su propio estudio en París y luego se marcha a Nueva York; Lucía Moholy emigra a Austria, se muda a París y acaba en Londres; Grete Sterne va de Londres a Buenos aires; Lotte Jacobi se marcha también a la capital inglesa y marcha eventualmente a Nueva York; Marianna Breslauer parte hacia Amsterdam y luego a Zurich; Anna Hoch se esconde en Heilegensse. Pero Yva permanece en Berlín.[31]

El estudio y la carrera de Yva cayeron en picada: para 1938 no le quedó opción y abandonó la fotografía obligada por los nazis.[32]

La pareja hizo un intento por huir en 1942 pero era demasiado tarde. Lograron empacar sus cosas en 34 cajones en el puerto de Hamburgo.[33] Sin embargo, las cajas fueron confiscadas por los nazis y ulteriormente destruidas durante el bombardeo en Hamburgo de 1943.[34]

Trabajó entonces como técnico radiológico en un hospital judío en Berlín, pero fue arrestada por la Gestapo el 1º de junio de 1942.[35]

Rumbo al campo de concentración

Tras ser apresados por la Gestapo fueron deportados a Polonia. Aunque los detalles no son precisos, todo indica que fueron transportados a Majdanek/Liubliana[36] al campo de concentración en Sobibor donde fueron asesinados a su llegada. Las diferentes fuentes han considerado el 31 de diciembre de 1944[37] la fecha oficial de muerte de Yva y su marido.[38]

Recuperación y legado

La mayor parte del trabajo de Yva se ha perdido. Quedan apenas algunas impresiones de época y algunos originales -muy pocos- de la primera fase de su vida fotográfica. La mayoría de sus experimentos se han perdido pero se ha podido recuperar algo de su trabajo gracias a los editores y publicaciones con quienes trabajó.[39]

Actualmente la Berlinische Galerie conserva algunas fotografías de Yva en su colección de la Nueva Visión y de la Nueva Objetividad.[40] En 1995 expuso en “Les dones fotògrafes a la República de Weimar” (Barcelona, “La Caixa”) [41] En Das Verbogenes Museum en Charolttenburg se hizo una retrospectiva (2001) y el siguiente año se presentó en el Stadtmuseum Berlin una exposición con fotografías de Yva de 1928 a 1938. De esta exposición se desprendió el único libro sobre la fotógrafa escrito por Marion Beckers y Elisabeth Moortgat (Wasmuth Publishing, 2002).

Yva

Hoy, cuando admiramos el glamour y la elegancia de las fotografías que realizaron grandes artistas como Cecil Beaton, Irving Penn, Erwin Blumenfeld, Horst P. Horst, Louise Dahl-Wolfe, Richard Avedon, Bern Stern, George Hoyningen-Huené o, desde luego Helmut Newton, tal vez ignoremos la enorme deuda que tienen con una mujer que supo poner su estampa en un mundo dominado por los hombres y cuya inteligencia, buen gusto, innovación y poder propulsaron una industria millonaria. Quizá, sin Yva, la fotografía de moda hoy sería totalmente distinta
