Question: If Luigi, were to say, accidentally find Bowser's diary (sort of like Peach did in Paper Mario) while they're dating, what would the diary entries say?

Nah you know what I need.
I need a fanfic or comic of like-
Say Bowser after a fight accidentally goes into the pipe that leads to Brooklyn and Luigi end up finding a tiny bowser and taking him in and everything. Bowser ends up getting a major soft spot for Luigi but still hates Mario (as per usual). Luigi takes Bowser out when he has a job from a client.
After a while, They end up finding another one of the the pipes and Bowser without thinking goes headfirst in and goes back to his world (he feels guilt and lonely after without his precious Luigi) and Luigi, who didn’t see where he went was heartbroken when he couldn’t find his beloved turtle has to go back home after looking for a longgg time.
Bowser has to go back to adjusting as his role as king after being away from his kingdom for a while and being pampered to his hearts content. And Luigi has to get normalized to not having a spiky turtle thing with him at all times and Mario while he’s sad that his brother is, is kinda glad that bowser is gone-
And que Mario and Luigi going into the pipe and ALSO getting teleported to the other world.
Imagine their surprise when they find out the turtle they found is actually a ruthless king of a giant turtle kingdom. Also when they see just how big their tiny turtle actually is-
So Bowser just takes Luigi back to his castle and pampers him and treats him like the queen he is!
And extra points if there are scenes with Luigi being a total mother hen to the koopalings!
Thanks for coming to my TedTalk!

tethered.
544 words, a short little oneshot about the chaos heart and luigi, and his unfortunate amnesia of it.
---
Exhaustion seeps through his bones when he finally falls unto his mattress, darkness of sleep quickly swimming behind his eyelids.
It’s the kind of exhaustion that’s clung to him since he awoke from that strange blacking out at Dimentio’s- and how the name sends shivers to his spine- beck and call. An attempt to weaken the good guys and give himself a winning chance, Luigi assumes.
But he dwells on that no longer- a smile graces his lips as he succumbs to sleep, never more grateful for a bed and a moon to shine through the window than ever. Tomorrow he and his brother will go to Peach’s castle, enjoy a celebratory cake, and enjoy the lovely, lovely calm after such a storm.
But for now, tonight, he lets himself dream- a treat after being left unconscious so many times through their journey.
His blanket softer than ever, his pillow plush and comfy, Luigi easily falls into a deep sleep.
..
.
Luigi opens his eyes to a darkness that seeps into his veins, wraps around his lungs and whispers around his frantically beating heart.  The once-comforting pull of a deep sleep now heavy in his bones makes him panic, weighing him down to the frightening presence.
What he sees around him are hues of blacks and grays, pulsing about his vision- alive. It dances about, smooth as water and heavy as rain.
But something about the way his vision swims, the manner of this heaviness he feels, the crawling of the darkness around him… It’s familiar, in a way, and he cannot shake the feeling he’s had this dream before. And he is dreaming, he knows this to be true, just as he knows he cannot breathe here, nor can he move.
The presence does not speak. It cannot, for it has no shape, no form to mouth words- but it feels. And Luigi feels it too, bleeding into him, solid enough that he could hold it in his hands. It sings of return, ripples through the darkness that echo within his own heart.
You are limitless, it muses through him, incomprehensible. As am I.
“Nightmare,” Luigi tries to whisper out, reminding himself. His voice reaches no one's ears but his own.
I am no nightmare, it denies. I have ceased to exist. All but for one tether.
The darkness stretches, the infinite space Luigi’s found himself in feeling cramped, as if held tightly together in a little box.
A flicker of white sprints through the darkness, and as his eyes follow it, he takes sight of his hands, laid against his sides. His body is swallowed by shadow, but one thing stands out starkly in the nothingness.
His hands are gloved in black, white stitching its edges and little stars dangling from the sleeves of them. A ringing sound burns through his head, the creeping imagery of a plant of all things itching at his skull.
The image fades as quickly as it sprouts, the emptiness around him filling that block. He wrenches his gaze upwards, the dark curiously watching all around him, calculating.
This dream will pass, as all dreams do. He just has to wake up.
Wake up, the emptiness echoes, almost mockingly. Its swaying hues of night almost emulate familiar laughter.

Bowuigi Idea where Jr in some way manage to find the pipe Mario and Luigi find in the movie (but before the movie) and get lost and hides somewhere and Luigi is the one that finds him (imagine it like this : Jr was hiding on the roof and fell down into Luigi's balcony which scared him and that's how he met Jr and hides him in his rooms because Mario heard Jr fell down and went to see if everything was fine) ((+ I say they don't understand eachother/speak the same language Jr is more grunts/whine/animalistic sound or could be because he's too young yet)) and Luigi hides him and tries to help be sending him back home etc and since everything happened before movie (bc i can) and everything mostly is the same but when Luigi gets captured by Bowser's maskass and all and is brought in front of Bowser he sees the similarity etc but everything goes the same until Jr finds him somehow and latches into him like a barnacle on a ship and u can imagine what follows next

new fic idea??
so starting off, this was inspired by the fic Ice Prince by ShiTiger on AO3 - https://archiveofourown.org/works/48284554, this is simply stated a longer and more drawn out (?) version of their fic, so go check it out!
The Mario brothers are being dropped into the new world, but rather than Luigi falling into the Darklands, he falls in the Snow Kingdom. He immediately wins over the hearts of the entire royal family and gains the favor of the Penguin King. This earns him the title of an honorary prince of ice.
Bowser eventually crashes into the Snow Kingdom (as he does) and demands they hand over their Superstar. Luigi walks out wrapped in heavy wool coats that conceal his face and thick winter boots that appear handmade. He stands out against Bowser with a shaky voice and stands strong against the tyrant king.
Bowser proposes a deal, if they hand over Luigi, he'll leave them alone. While the penguins are rather reluctant, Luigi agrees almost immediately for the safety of his new friends and their kingdom.
Bowser is rather smug when whisking Luigi away, taking him to the Darklands' castle and quickly having Luigi marry him to seal the deal. Luigi now has to navigate this new relationship and home to terms that he has gone from a plumber to an honorary ice prince to queen of a lava-filled kingdom, and a mother of 8???
I might write this but I'm not quite sure, you're free to use this idea as long as you go ahead and let my know in the comments or pms! (maybe link the fic too?? lol) Maybe for good measure ask shitiger too? their @ is just shitiger here on tumblr

A Picture of Wealth
A quick oneshot for a possible beginning of a Luigi's Mansion movie. Not particularly exciting, but if you like quiet Mario and Luigi slice of life stuff you'll probably like this. I started writing this a while ago, but this post by @theangelofangst inspired me to finish it. AO3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/49496971
_____________________________
After waving ‘goodbye’ to the Mail Toad, Luigi popped open the mailbox and pulled out a stack of envelopes. He scanned them for a moment, loosely sorting them in his mind. It was easy to tell what came from The Mushroom Kingdom and what came from Brooklyn; bright, pastel colored envelopes and fountain pen clashing against cold copy-pasted text on plain white. There was a ‘thank you’ card from a neighboring toad whose sink they had fixed free of charge, a little flier advertising a free upcoming performance in the square, and a pretty, pink envelope embossed with a crown, whose handiwork was easy to recognize. Even the bills were friendly and personable, though they formed as much of a pit in his stomach as the cold typeface from Brooklyn.
For Mario and Luigi, living on their own had been an adjustment, and having an actual income was a serious learning curve. There was an initial high of having money in their pockets, which led to a spending spree to replace much of their oldest tools and equipment before independent living’s new stack of expenses hit them like a train. Still, they had been fairly cautious. Despite a few poor initial decisions they would’ve had enough money to stay out of the red… had it not been for one giant curveball that had been thrown at them.
Luigi stepped back through the front door into the kitchen where Mario sat at the table, hatless and disheveled, hunched over a computer and a stack of papers where he’d been since sunrise. One hand tapped a pencil against a notepad, the other pressed their shared cellphone to his ear.
“Dad, it’s alright. You need it more than we do,” Mario said, “No, forget it, I- no, it’s not a loan.” Luigi couldn’t help but smile as he peeked around the doorway and listened in. It sounded like their father had discovered the check they sent them, and was reacting about as expected. He at least sounded lively from what he could overhear… when they first got the news that he was staying in the hospital for a few days, Mario and Luigi feared the worst. Luckily, it seemed their dad had the family’s hereditary trait of being able to bounce back from just about anything, the bad news was that despite twenty five straight years of company loyalty, getting the help owed to him by the insurance was like pulling teeth.
“Look, I’m a little busy. We’ll talk about it at Sunday lunch, okay?” Mario sighed, “Yeah. Okay. You too. Bye, Dad.” With that he hung up, and set the phone to the side.
“Sounds like he’s feeling better” Luigi laughed, finally stepping into the kitchen to deliver the mail to the table. “Yep.” Mario replied with a tired chuckle, barely even glancing up from his work. “Not well enough to work yet though, as much as he wants to.” “Did the check get deposited?” “Mom managed it under his nose, but it might be the only check that goes through for us this month if I don’t figure something out.” Mario sighed and ran his fingers through his hair, “Ugh, why did I replace our van’s entire engine. All it needed was a few new spark plugs!” “The Garrisons still owe us for rerouting their fountain." Luigi assured, "I’ll send them an invoice.” He stopped for a moment and looked over Mario’s workspace: every possible refund for unnecessary expenses noted and listed, every document scattered about like the stress of the room had caused a miniature explosion on the kitchen table, a mustard-stained receipt for a strap wrench having made it all the way to the empty dishes from lunchtime. Luigi reached over his brother’s shoulder to retrieve the dishes and arrange some of the papers into neat little piles. Mario leaned to the side to give him room.
“You know,” Luigi began hesitantly, “maybe we should ask Princess Peach if-” “We are not asking the princess for money.” Mario interrupted. “No no… I mean, maybe she can void our water bill or something?” “She gave us a free house Luigi! You really think it’s right to ask her for more.” “Maybe?" Luigi shrugged, "I mean, protecting the kingdom has kind of interfered with our work schedule.” “We do that because it’s right, Luigi, not for a paycheck.” “I know!” Luigi raised his voice a little in frustration. He stepped away from the table to deliver the empty plate and glass to the sink, rinsing them off and scrubbing them a little too aggressively to let off steam, “But I’m sure if we explain our situation, she can do something.” “I told you, the answer is no. We’re not bumming off of anyone, especially not Princess Peach.” “It’s not bumming, it’s asking for help! There’s no shame in asking for help. When you need help, you need help!”
Mario didn’t answer, he just grumbled quietly to himself and returned to the bills. Luigi rolled his eyes, scrubbing clean a few extra dishes and placing them in the drying rack before he returned to where his brother sat. He leaned against him, resting his forearm on his shoulder in a purposefully obnoxious way. “You’re as bad as Dad is.” “I am not.” “Are so.” Luigi smiled mischievously, “You look like him too. I’m probably gonna start calling you ‘Dad’ on accident when you start losing your hair.” Luigi tussled his brother’s auburn locks. Mario pulled away, unable to help but laugh as he grabbed one of the pieces of junk mail on the table, crumpled it up, and threw it at Luigi in retaliation. “Will you get out of here?”
Luigi blocked the missile with his hand. He attempted to catch it, but it tumbled out of his slippery grip and landed on the floor. Luigi intended to take it directly in the garbage, but leaning down to pick it up the colors caught his eye… and he realized he did not quite notice this particular piece of mail when he initially emptied the mailbox. Interest piqued, he uncrumpled the paper and read it. His brow raised and his heart skipped a beat. “Mario!” he declared, the sudden exclamation making his brother jump, “We’ve got a free mansion!” Mario let out a loud groan, turning around in his chair. “Oh come on Weegee! It’s an obvious scam!”
Luigi shook his head. “No no, they’ve got a map and an address and everything!” He turned the pamphlet over in his hands in order to reexamine the large block of text on the back, “It says ‘only a select few who apply for noble titles, such as those who are known locally for their heroism’ … that's us!... ‘ are receiving this limited time offer’!” Luigi looked up from his reading to grin excitedly at Mario, who looked back at him with a bored expression. Luigi, undeterred, returned his eyes the advertisement. “There’s a place called Evershade Valley with a big, beautiful mansion in the center of it. Look!” Luigi held the picture out to his big brother, shoving it a little too close to his face in his excitement. “Neo-Gothic architecture!”
Mario took the flier from Luigi’s hands to scrutinize it more closely. The cover image seemed sketchy. The coloration was off, the greenery in the lawn looked doctored, and the giant, garish rainbow plastered into the background reeked of overcompensation. “Sounds like just the kind of padding they’d add to a scam to make it seem like a little less of a scam,” he mumbled, eyes trailing down to the map beneath the image of the mansion. “Evershade Valley… looks like it’s not too far from The Dark Lands. Are you sure about this?” Hearing ‘Dark Lands’ Luigi stiffened a bit, bringing his hands close to his chest as he reconsidered for a few seconds. “It’s near The Darklands, not in The Darklands.” He decided after a moment, “Maybe we can flip this place!: reinstall some plumbing, fix up the wiring, add a fresh coat of paint… boom! Money in our pockets!”
Mario gripped his chin, running a thumb over his mustache thoughtfully. No way it was that easy. If this was really a free mansion like the advertisement said, it couldn’t be anything other than a dilapidated shell that wasn’t worth the investment. If not that, there was no doubt something wrong with the location… nobody simply gave away free mansions.
On the other hand, Mario was impressed that Luigi maintained interest despite its close proximity to The Darklands. Given his past experiences, Mario expected him to back down at the mere mention of that place. The fact that some old building was enough to overshadow those fears made his desire hard to ignore. That, and Luigi was giving him that stupid sad-eyed pleading face that Mario could never say no to. He let out a heavy sigh, smoothed out the pamphlet a bit with his fingers, and handed it back to his brother. “Fine. On one condition.”
“Really!?” Luigi cheered. He threw out his arms to pluck his brother up into a hug, when Mario extended a hand to stave him off a moment.
“On one condition.” He repeated, “You stay here and run the business while I’m away. We can’t afford to miss any clients.”
Luigi deflated. He withdrew his arms and anxiously rubbed the tops of his hands. “Run the business… alone? Just me?” “If I take a warp pipe I shouldn’t be gone longer than a day. You’ll be fine.”
“No I won’t.” Mario cocked his head. He was startled by the terseness of the reply, upsettingly certain in its pessimism. “What do you mean? Of course you will! You just got a few leaky sinks and a running toilet. Nothin’ major.”
“Mario, name one time I did something completely on my own that didn’t turn out a disaster.” Mario opened his mouth to respond, but stopped. He thought things over a bit longer, opened his mouth again, then shut it again to think some more. It was difficult enough recalling a time that Luigi was on his own to begin with– they worked together at every opportunity– but when circumstances drove them apart, even for the briefest of moments, Luigi seemed to always end up in some kind of trouble. Mario’s eyes brightened as one instance popped into his mind. He smiled and snapped his fingers. “Aha! seventh grade! You made it into the Wizard of Oz musical! Played a really good Tinman!” Luigi smiled despondently, crossing his arms. “Mario, I vomited on stage.” “Only during the final bow. The final bow doesn’t count.” Luigi’s expression only grew more troubled as his arms tightened against his chest, and his eyes remained fixed to the ground. Mario stood up from his chair. He walked up to his brother, and took his face in his hands. “Hey, c’mon, don’t look like that,” he said, lifting his Luigi's head to meet his gaze. “You’ve got a good head on your shoulders, you just need a bit more confidence.” Mario’s grip fell from Luigi's face to his shoulders, giving them an endearing squeeze. “Maybe it’ll be good for you to give it a shot on your own. Your luck can’t be all bad, can it?” Neither of them quite knew the answer to that. Both of them stood silent for a moment as Luigi looked at his brother, then down at the pamphlet in his hand, and the big, beautiful mansion on the front. He couldn’t quite figure it out, but something about the place resonated with him. It made him remember being a kid, reading through his mom’s interior design magazines– the sense of wonder and possibility they incited, and the quiet longing to have such a place of his own to wander and explore. He folded the flier, placed it in his pocket, took a deep breath, and sighed. “I’ll do it.”
“Ha ha! That’s my bro.” Mario released his brother’s shoulders to give him a friendly jab with his elbow. “Maybe it’ll be good for you to try to work the business on your own! Just… make sure that clients put their dogs away before you set foot anywhere.”
Luigi grimaced. A small shudder ran up his back as he remembered the incident with Francis The Dog at their first job. Wondering what might have happened to him if Mario hadn’t been there to come to his rescue, second thoughts quickly began to creep in. “Maybe it is a scam–” “Nope! Too late. We’re doing this.” Mario had a fresh determination in his voice as he pulled out his chair and sat back down at the kitchen table. “I’ll finish balancing the checkbook tonight, then leave in the morning– 8 a.m sharp. If I hurry, I might be able to get home in time to help you with the last few jobs.”
Luigi knew that tone. No matter how much his brother initially hated the idea, once he started talking like that there was no stopping him from following through. Luigi had dug his grave, it was time to lie in it. Trying– and failing– not to think about everything that could go wrong in a single work day, Luigi began looking around for something to occupy his mind. The dishes were done, the garden was weeded, and he didn’t need to start dinner for another few hours, so he went to the broom closet and pulled out his vacuum. Plugging it in and unwinding the cord he went to work, allowing himself to get lost in the satisfying rattle of dirt being sucked away as he meticulously went over the carpet and wooden floor bit by bit, until every square inch of the house was clean and tidy.

Dimentio Analysis
My thoughts on this Dimentio post, recently shared with me by @iukasylvie! The post: https://altermentality.wordpress.com/2016/02/10/flair-for-the-dramatic/.
! CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR SUPER PAPER MARIO !
Okay before I address the article, I should establish my own Dimentio headcanons. I see our silly jester as a sociopath, in that he can't feel love in the same way as other people. Like Bleck, he has a void inside of him, but Dimentio fills it by feeding off of others. Basically, he likes playing around and taunting people because of how emotionally reactive they are, it's how he fills himself up. Mimi's his favorite to mess around with because she's VERY reactive. As for why he wants his own world: he wants to put on a show. The whole of existence, dedicated to entertaining him. The only characters I can liken this to are the Celestial Toymaker (DW) and the Collector (TOH).
Now first off, the article references SPM in the context of "commedia dell'arte", which was a form of theater in Italy during the Renaissance. This form of theater had three types of characters: innamorati (the star-crossed lovers), vecchi (the powerful elders of society), and zanni (the clowns). The common plot of these plays? Two young lovers, hindered by the elders, who end up turning to the zanni to reach a happy ending.
Tumblr media
Of course, Dimentio is a zanni character type. He may not help the Count reach his happy ending directly, but his actions do lead to the wedding with Tippi so, in a sense, this does fit the archetype. And of course, I don't have to tell you who the innamorati characters are. Anyone who knows a lick about Shakespeare probably already knows the love story of Blumiere and Timpani uses a pretty strong "forbidden love" trope, but it's interesting to see this somewhat supported by other forms of theater arts! To say Nintendo and Intelligent Systems had commedia dell'arte in mind when writing SPM's story would be a stretch, but it's always cool to see some elements match across different eras and types of storytelling.
Moving on, does Dimentio care about the other minions? The article eventually concludes that yes, he must, because how could you live in a castle with four other people and not grow to love them? My headcanon lines up with this pretty well--after all, Dimentio words the Count's lie about creating a new world as a "betrayal", and a betrayal facilitates caring enough to trust someone in the first place (points at Olly's entire arc with Olivia in The New Void). But Dimentio doesn't know *how* to love, and his version of "care" is different. He likes having the others around, but as players in his game, as entertainment. That's how he sees it. He fixates on them specifically for a reason he'd never care to explain.
New Void Spoilers Below.
You could say he fixates on Luigi, too, which might seem strange when they had far less time together. Shipping aside, I think canonically Dimentio fixes on Luigi because he's the key to everything, he's a highly valuable asset and Dimentio knows it. In the New Void, this isn't exactly the case. Dimentio doesn't have anything to gain by making Luigi suffer, it's just pure fun. Sure, he COULD torment some Shaydes or D-Men instead, but they're dead and they're boring. Dimentio's also been in the Underwhere for...awhile, and Luigi is a familiar face. In his own way, Dimentio's been a little lonely. It's just that, his way of acting on this feeling is to turn it into a game of psychological warfare...
New Void Spoilers End.
Overall, the strongest part of the article is the description of Dimentio's ideal world. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of darkmarxsoul's Chaos Trilogy, but this depiction of Dimentio's universe might be the best I've ever seen. “Dimentio’s goal is to maximize the amount of drama in the universe…a world with the dials of mortal anguish and despair and even joy set to maximum volume, and the banishment of the mundane. A world where he pulls all the strings to ensure this happens. The Ultimate Show.” Chilling! It's like Bill Cipher's whole Weirdmageddon deal, except rather than maximizing weirdness, DImentio would be maximizing drama, flair, and theatrics. All the world's a stage, and whatnot.
I LOVE this idea for a world of his so much that it's a wonder I haven't started writing fics centered around it already! All these new people living what they think are just ordinary lives, not knowing that it's all being orchestrated by a being that craves mere entertainment. Life as a musical, maybe a comedy tomorrow, or maybe a tragedy next week--all because Dimentio wants it to be. I mean, that's absolutely horrifying when you think about it! Enough for a brief existential crisis maybe! But it's also very cool >:)
In summary: what do we think about Dimentio? I think he's a sociopath who doesn't understand love but desperately wants to be entertained. The article's description of Dimentio's ideal world is scarily accurate and also has a LOT of fanfic potential. Dimentio himself is fun and silly, but also dangerous and probably not someone you'd want to interact with in real life.
As this is my opinion/interpretation, I'm too biased to say whether or not this aligns well with canon. But what do you think? Do you think this all fits Dimentio perfectly, or do you have other thoughts?

Adding another bit to my "Mario and Luigi twin headcanons"
- - -
The brothers occasionally have dreams of each other's lives when they are apart. Not full on day to day recount, but more like glimpses of the other's life they didn't witness.
Like Baby Mario dreams of a scary castle, trapped in a bag next to a captured stork...
Or older Mario dreaming of being trapped in a cage above boiling lava...
Or Luigi recounting a terrifying moment of being trapped in an eel...

Attention all Bowuigi fans and supporters! I come to you with a wholesome Bowuigi idea:
Luigi eavesdrops on a conversation between Bowser and Kamek and/or Kammy, but instead of Bowser talking shit about him, Luigi discovers that the one and only Koopa King is actually talking about how much he loves Luigi and how he thanks Grambi and the Star Spirits every day that someone as sweet and innocent as Luigi wants to date a fearsome and selfish monster like him.

A Call from the Balcony
AO3 Link!
~~~
“Ah, your highness!” Toadsworth greeted. “You’re in a bit late, aren’t you? No matter! Before you retire to your chambers there’s a few things I wanted to— y-your highness? Your highness!”
His voice quickly faded behind Peach as she passed him, her pace quickening into a brisk walk, then a light jog, then a run. She would apologize later, she decided. Toadsworth was never very far. There would be plenty of time to explain away her actions and listen to whatever it was he intended to yammer on about.
She didn’t have the same luxury at her disposal right now. This mission was time-sensitive. She hiked her skirts up and ran as quickly as her shoes would permit, the heels clacking frantically against the marble floors; she thought for a moment of kicking them off so she could sprint, but she would lose as much time in the act as she would gain from the additional mobility.
And anyway, the next corner she rounded brought her face-to-face with her target destination. She burst through the entrance to her drawing room, stumbled into her bedroom, and threw aside her balcony doors, rushing to the railing and praying she wasn’t too late.
The darkness outside made color difficult to perceive, but she recognized the red-and-blue silhouette crossing the bridge over the castle's moat all the same. A grin split her face from ear to ear.
“Mario!”
He startled, as though her call had pulled him from some deep train of thought, and quickly turned to face her. She swore his eyes lit up at the sight of her, and that filled her with an unprecedented joy, so intense that her head buzzed and warmth blossomed in her chest.
She paused then, fighting back a sudden wave of panic. She hadn’t thought of anything to say.
In truth, they had only parted ways a few minutes earlier. Today had been a rare and wonderful day in which they’d never once left each other’s side. A meeting with a foreign diplomat that morning meant Mario had arrived bright and early to serve as her guard; the uneventful meeting ended just before 1:00 in the afternoon, so she had invited him to share lunch with her before she had to bury herself in administrative paperwork. Mario himself had offered to keep her company and make the tedious task more bearable, and thanks to the constant joking and frequent mental shifts from the topics they were supposed to be focused on, the sun hung low in the sky by the time she finished. She had then offered dinner for his troubles, and he agreed on the condition that they take a short walk afterward — “Nothing worse than being cooped up like that all day,” he’d said, rolling his shoulders and cracking his neck, and she couldn’t help but agree.
An hour after the sun had gone to bed, she finally and reluctantly bid him farewell, because she had already taken up his entire day and he didn’t seem willing to leave without her permission. Yet she missed him as soon as they parted, and by the time she was inside, she made up her mind that she needed to see him one last time.
Now Mario was staring up at her, clearly expecting a reason for being stopped so soon after being excused, and Peach could think of nothing but Every moment with you never feels like enough.
What would he say to that? Would he laugh? Would he be embarrassed? Would he feel the same way?
“I… forgot to tell you!” she finally said after what felt like an eternity of wracking her mind for excuses. “The main fountain in the garden has sprung a leak. I fear it will face irreparable damage if it isn’t fixed by about 2:30 tomorrow afternoon!”
Another pause, this time as Mario processed her announcement, and she witnessed the exact moment he realized it was actually an invitation — his eyes widened in understanding, and then he gave a single, firm nod. “You can count on me, Princess!” he called back.
Already Peach’s heart felt lighter. What would she invite him to do? She could get up early to bake his favorite coffee cakes and they could share them in her favorite gazebo. Or perhaps she could pack them and a bottle of wine into a wicker basket and escape the castle grounds with him for a few hours. Tomorrow’s weather was supposed to be lovely, perfect for an impromptu picnic. Or they could always just do as they had done tonight, pacing about in the fields behind the castle as they discussed any and every topic that ran through their heads.
She supposed she had a bit of time to choose. It would be rude to keep him waiting in the meantime.
“Forgive me for holding you up,” she called.
“Never!” he called in return. “It’s always a pleasure!”
“Then I’ll see you tomorrow?” She backed away from the railing, giving him silent permission to break away, and she noted with a pang of amusement that he took a single step back as well, as though mimicking her.
“Of course! Can’t have that fountain breaking down, now, can we?”
She took another experimental step. Mario followed suit. Did he even realize he was doing it?
“Then stay safe going home!” Another step.
“Oh, I think I can manage!” The same step, mirrored.
“Sleep well!”
“May your dreams be sweeter than cannoli cream!”
“And may your night be equally pleasant!”
“Buonanotte, amabile principessa!”
“You too! I think!”
Mario laughed, and considering they were still calling out to one another while Peach’s back was inches from the doorframe, she laughed as well. She never wanted this game of call-and-response to end. But what other choice did they have? Mario pulled his cap from his head and waved with it, one final, wordless farewell, and Peach scrambled for her handkerchief to return the gesture. Like a noblewoman seeing her lover off, she couldn't help but think.
Eventually, Mario turned in the opposite direction, though his actions seemed slow, almost thoughtful, and he kept his eyes on her until his body’s change in position forced his head forward. Like a noblewoman’s lover desperate to drink in her image one last time. The thought made Peach’s throat feel tight.
If only…
She watched in silence as Mario walked out of sight, his cap seemingly forgotten in his right hand. She absently clutched at her handkerchief in her left and sighed. “Goodnight, Mario,” she whispered into the night.
~~~
“Guys don’t just stare at girls until they physically can’t anymore if they don’t feel something for them,” Toadette weighed in half an hour later, brushing the last of a handful of tangles from Peach’s hair. Peach just sighed for what must have been the hundredth time that night.
“Something about my posture must have been amusing to him,” she reasoned. “Or I was simply imagining it. You know how time slows when he leaves.”
Toadette stepped down from her step stool to set the ornate hairbrush on the vanity, and Peach tore her eyes from her own miserable reflection to watch as she fetched a bottle of argan oil, only to disappear behind her again.
“You of all people have no reason to sell yourself short.” Tiny fingers massaged her scalp as Toadette worked the oil through her hair. She closed her eyes and relaxed at the familiar sensation. “You’re a princess, for crying out loud! You know how many men dream of becoming your suitor? What makes you think Mario’s any different?”
The answer was obvious, Peach felt, but tonight she felt more tempted than ever to think maybe her lady-in-waiting had a point. “Because I’m not just a princess to him,” she said, more to herself than to Toadette. “I’m a cherished friend, a trusted confidant, an equal.”
“And nothing’s going to convince you otherwise.”
“Nothing short of him saying any differently himself.” When Peach opened her eyes, her reflection looked tired, sad. She couldn’t help but smile bitterly. “It’s a bit cruel, honestly. Knowing one of the reasons I love him so much is one of the very same reasons he could never return those affections.”
Now it was Toadette's turn to sigh.
That night, Peach settled into bed and fell asleep quickly, an overstuffed pillow hugged tightly to her chest. She remained blissfully unaware of the scuffle just outside of her door.
“I’m telling him everything!” Toadette cried, writhing in vain against Toad’s grasp on her wrist.
“Don’t you dare!” Toad pulled with all of his might, managing to drag her a few inches back before she lurched forward again.
“I can’t take it anymore!”
“You think I don’t get an earful of lovesick rambling every day too?!”
“By the stars, if they can’t take a hint, I’ll make them see the light myself!”
“This has to happen organically! On its own! You can’t rush love!”
“I can and I will!”
On the opposite side of the door, Peach dreamed of a warm summer day sharing coffee cakes with the man she loved more than life itself. She smiled in her sleep and hugged her pillow closer.

idea: luigi and bowser are married. mario and peach call for help one day, as the mushroom kingdom is getting invaded. luigi goes to help and bowser stays behind to watch over their kingdom (much to his chagrin)
fighting the invading army is going well, they were a short distance from getting them to surrender when luigi receives a whack on the head from behind. the force of the hit is big enough to a) knock him out immediately, and b) somehow switch his entire personality to mr. L, who they all thought didn't exist in luigi's mind anymore after SPM.
so now mr. L is badmouthing mario in the middle of the courtyard (who is desperately trying not to let it get to him), egging him on to fight as peach is just plain stressed in the background. she ends up calling bowser to come, explaining what happened as they approach the bros location. when they enter, mr. L immediately jumps over to bowser and pulls him down by the spiked collar, talking to him in italian. while bowser didnt understand the phrase, the raw lust and confidence of the delivery and mario's gagging in the background let the koopa know whatever his lover had said was filthy. the thought of it alone had bowsers tail wagging and heart thumping wildly. before mr. L could become more publicly inappropriate, peach asked bowser to "entertain" his husband while they searched for a solution.
the next three days would be interesting for bowser. the nights would be spent on nasty endeavours, mr. L proving himself to be dominating and insatiable in bed - quite the difference from luigi's tender approach to it when he topped. he would proceed to snore half the day away, and then either hunt for food or flirt with bowser. after three days, peach and mario visited with a medical expert.
they only wanted to get more info on the situation, but mr. L was relentless in egging on mario still. it got to the point that the red plumber gave his brother another whack to the head - that being, funnily enough, the answer to getting luigi back to normal. while no answers would be found as to why it worked or even happened in the first place, bowser was sure to address his newly found kink with his beloved.
(bonus plot twist: the og bonk on the noggin didnt actually change luigi into mr. L, but gave him the excuse he had been searching for to try out something new in the bedroom. it may have worked a little too well, hehe)

Tell Me What Happened - Fanfic for 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie'
Technically, this could take place after 'Shine and Reflect'. But can be read on it's own.
With the craziness that happened, there were a lot of missing gaps that needed to be filled.
Fandom: Super Mario & Related Fandoms, The Super Mario Bros. Movie Rating: General Audience Audiences Relationships: Luigi & Mario (Nintendo) Warnings/Additional Tags: Hurt/Comfort, Angst, Named Characters, Filling in the Blanks, Mentions of Violence, Discussion of What Happened.
He was back in the cage.
Legs pulled up to his chest as he tried to keep himself from burning his skin again on the heated metal. Shivering in fear at the wide lake of lava that stretched out below him. Unable to see where the edges of this lake were. There was no one else around. Even with how bright the lava burned, the surrounding area was shrouded in darkness.
Luigi felt like he was losing his mind.
How did he get back here?
Hadn’t they won?
Wasn’t Bowser now super tiny with his army dissolved?
Where was Mario?
Before he could wonder more about his predicament, the cage jerked as it started to lower.
Luigi stood quickly, only to bang his head against the metal. The cage had somehow slowly started to shrink. Leaving him to curl into a ball, eyes on the approaching molten liquid. Unable to move. Unable to think of a way out.
“Help!” Luigi called out desperately, “Mario, where are you!”
An uncomfortably familiar hiss sounded as the metal reached the lava. Luigi let out a yelp as the cage suddenly pitched to the right. Wide eyes seeming to burn as the lava drew closer, his throat closed as he fell into the ignited liquid and-
Mario was torn from his sleep hearing a panicked scream, breaking the early morning silence. Dazedly looking around as he tried to figure out where he was and what was happening. Movement to his right called his attention to Luigi.
Instantly, the sleep disappeared as older brother protection took over seeing his brother screaming with absolute fear. Eyes wide, mouth stretched out even as the air depleted and Luigi fell silent. Hands desperately clawing at his chest.
“Lu! …Luigi? H-Hey, can you hear me?” Mario moved to kneel before his brother. Who didn’t seem aware of where he was or even what was happening. “Luigi? …Come on bro, you’re freaking me out. Say something.”
Hands placed on his shoulders, Luigi jerked back. Seeming to snap out of his trance slightly as glazed eyes turned to his brother. “M-Mario?”
“Hey, hey yeah, it’s me. You okay? What happened?” Mario attempted to keep his voice even as he internally panicked. Worry further grew as Luigi fell apart. A heavy sob escaped the younger brother as he collapsed into Mario.
Mario instantly pulled Luigi closer, arms tightening wrapped around the other. Mind numb as he listened to his brother cry. Unaware as the three other occupants slowly left the room.
Peach was careful as she closed the bedroom door behind her. Hand on the wood as she turned towards her companions. Toad was fidgeting nervously, clearly holding himself back from running into the room again. No doubt wanting to figure out some way to help. Donkey Kong was tense. Wide eyes staring hard at the door they’d all just walked out from. Clearly as lost as the rest of them.
Even with wanting to give the brother’s space, it was also clear the three had no idea what to do. Peach’s hand still on the door. As if her want to help would, to understand, would transfer to the twins somehow.
Their frozen worry was broken when a heavy cough sounded from below them. All three turn to find Tony standing on the stairs. Hair ruffled and dressed in his sleepwear with a rather fluffy robe wrapped around him, Tony straightened his glasses before silently waving for the group to follow him. Descending the stairs without looking behind to see if the group was following, because he knew they were.
Mom and Pop were found in the living room. Giorgia pacing around the small space while Aldo was staring out the large living room window. Both clearly tense and fearful, no doubt hearing their child screaming in fear.
The city was still dark outside the wide window.
“Got ‘em.” Tony announced their arrival. Giorgia and Aldo facing the small group at the same time.
“We heard…” Giorgia whispered, so worried about what was happening.
Peach clasped her hands before her, finding comfort in taking a royal stance as she said, “I believe…that Luigi had a nightmare. But Mario’s with him.”
This didn’t seem to help with their concern. When neither spoke up, Tony loudly cleared his throat once more. “So, since we have a bit of a break in the action, we were hoping you three could tell us what happened to the boys in your mystical world.”
“Shouldn’t you just ask them?” DK asked.
“Our boys are very stubborn,” Aldo gruffly said.
Giorgia placed a hand on his shoulder before adding on, “They tend to try and work things out on their own before coming to us. And this seems…so much more than what they’ve dealt with before. We’re worried about how quiet they might be this time…”
“We don’t need to know everything,” Tony said, “Just a good summary of what the heck happened.”
Peach bit her bottom lip in thought. “...We don’t know Luigi's story. But we can share our time with Mario.”
The parents seemed relieved by the answer. DK and Toad claimed space on the floor while the rest took a seat on the furniture proper. When all were comfortable, it was Toad who started them off.
“So there I was!” he started dramatically, “Out in the Mushroom Fields, doing my daily rounds of exploring. Seeking out adventure. Seeing what new thing had yet to be discovered. It was then that I heard a strange sound. It was like a whooshing sound and short cries of pain.”
“As I approached the area from which I’d heard these sounds, I was shocked when I found a human! Stunned for a few moments, I found I was unable to move. Until I realized that he was reaching out to touch a blue mushroom! So I-”
“Toad,” Peach interrupted quickly, “they’re just looking for a summary of events. Minimal information. If they want to know something more, they’ll ask for it.”
“Oh…right. In that case, I found Mario. He explained to me that he lost his brother in the Warp Zone and I told him that Luigi’s probably ended up in the Dark Lands. Which…promptly upset him. So I then said that I could take him to see Princess Peach, who can fix anything!”
Peach gave a small smile and nod to Toad’s words. “Well, at the very least I do my best. But yes, Mario did come to see me. Saying the same to me as he had to Toad. I informed him I was already going to face Bowser and that I would bring Luigi back. Mario wasn’t satisfied with this answer. More or less demanding that I allow him to come with me.”
“Was this before or after you threw him over your shoulder?” Toad asked.
Peach knew it was an innocent question on her citizens part. But she felt a part of her die inside from embarrassment. Even more so when DK started to laugh.
“Wait, no, did you really?” The ape asked, practically doubled over with laughter, breathing hard.
“It was instincts!” Peach defended herself, “He was running right at me and I didn’t know what else to do. I apologized afterwards and made sure he was unharmed.”
“You didn’t answer my question,” said Toad.
“It was after. But that’s not the point!” Peach huffed to try and calm herself before continuing, “I said I would help get Luigi back, Mario asked to come, more like insisted. Bottom line right there.”
Giorgia smiled softly. “That sounds very much like Mario… What did you tell him?”
“Oh, well, I told him he could come. But he had to complete the training course that my castle has. Our world is dangerous, even on a good day. I wanted to make sure he could at least hold his own. And he was able to…eventually.”
“There’s a lot of hidden context on that statement, princess.” Tony leaned forward with raised brows.
“Mario never fully finished the course,” Peach admitted slowly, “But he ran it so many times, he showed me he’s determined and willing to do what he needs to. I mean, he ate enough Mushrooms to cause him to, um, expel what he’d taken in. Even after his clear disdain for them. He was willing to do anything to help get Luigi back.”
“Wait, wait, he ate mushrooms?”
Giorgia couldn't help but give a gentle laugh. Her fingers dabbed at the corner of her eyes. “Mario will do anything for Luigi…”
Aldo shifted in his seat, looking thoughtful. Peach wasn’t given a chance to ask what he was thinking about when he gave his own question, “So, you let him follow you.”
“Toad joined us while we headed to the Jungle Kingdom.”
“That’s where I live!” DK intervened.
“We figured as much,” Giorgia said with a smile, “But thank you for clarifying.”
“We arrived and were taken to King Cranky Kong-” Peach frowned softly as DK took over at this point.
“My dad has command over the greatest army ever!” The ape beamed, “He wasn’t just going to hand it over because someone asked.”
“Yes, and apparently the only way to prove my kingdom was worth protecting was for Mario to fight you.”
DK’s rebuttal was drowned out when Aldo said, “You fought our son?”
“...Yes?” The ape had the decency to look sheepish at the hard stares mom and pop were giving. “I mean, it’s our way to resolve things!”
“You sounded really happy when you said you were going to break every bone in his body.” Toad calmly stated.
DK growled out, “Not. Helping.”
“Positive news from this is that Mario was able to win and gain the Kong army,” Peach said quickly to try and keep the peace. Worried eyes focusing on Aldo’s hands that were tightly gripping the ends of his armrest.
“You all should have been there, it was awesome!” Toad pulled the conversation towards him again. Beaming as he thought about said event. “Mario kept being beaten down and he kept getting back up! He finally got a leg up when he got the Cat Suit and whooped DK’s butt!”
“I let him win!”
“As if!”
“Gentlemen, please!” Peach spoke up. Hands up, palms facing each party to keep them apart. “We’re not here to discuss who won and why. We’re here to explain to our hosts as to what happened to their family.”
Toad huffed at that, “I am!”
“Toad, please…let’s just continue on.”
“So, you won the favor of the great army,” Tony said slowly, “Then you all…”
“We took the Rainbow Road back to the Mushroom Kingdom in hopes to ambush Boswer. Oh, and to answer your possible question, yes we were driving on an actual rainbow. Mario said that’s not normal for your world and I wanted to just clarify that.” said Peach.
“Roads made from rainbows…” Tony whispered in disbelief.
“What happened when you returned to the kingdom?” Giorgia asked.
Peach couldn’t help but wince at the question, “Well, there was a complication… We were ambushed by Bowser’s army and…we all didn’t make it back.”
“What does that mean?”
“Mario and I… Part of the bridge exploded, he was on my cart and…we fell,” DK’s tone was somber even as he spoke, “Fell into an ocean, was eaten by a giant eel, had a bit of a weird heart to heart, and eventually got out. Arrived back to the Mushroom Kingdom right after the wedding started. We’re fine, obviously, but…yeah…”
“You’re still shaken.” Giorgia replied gently.
“Wasn’t given a chance to really think about it all…”
“But they were able to get back,” Peach continued, “Mario…we all had a hand in the battle in Bowser’s castle, I suppose.”
“What about Luigi?” Giorgia asked fearfully, “Do you know?”
“Well, Mario was able to catch his brother before he hit the lava, so that’s good.” DK said, smiling sheepish, no doubt hoping what he’d just said was somewhat comforting.
The horrified faces said otherwise.
“I don’t know if…I can…” Peach let out a slow breath, “Everything Mario did was to make sure he could get his brother back. I am…so thankful for his help. This wouldn’t be our ending if it wasn’t for him. But…I will never deny this was all for Luigi.”
All jumped when Aldo suddenly stood from his chair. Making his way to the kitchen without a word or glance towards anyone. Peach was surprised it was DK who followed after. Deciding her comments weren’t needed now.
“Ms. Peach,” said princess turned back to Giorgia, who was on the verge of tears. “Do you mean to tell me…that Luigi was in the hands of that monster the entire time?”
Peach gave a small nod.
“Can you tell me…anything about what might have happened to him?”
“...He’s not said anything to anyone about it…”

DK did his best to make himself as small as possible upon entering the smaller room. Finding Aldo by some machine with a pot resting inside, some black liquid dripping into it slowly. The human’s hardened eyes staring at it as the machine hissed and sputtered on occasion.
“Do you drink coffee?” Aldo suddenly asked, not looking up.
“Co..fi? No, I’ve never had co-fi before.”
“Probably a good idea. You’d be bouncing off the walls I assume.”
They fell quiet again. DK feeling unsure as to why he’d felt so determined to follow Aldo in. He wasn’t even sure what he could say that would help the situation. He wasn’t that close to Mario and Aldo was confusing…but familiar.
“Did you really fight my son?”
DK couldn't help but wince from the question, “Um, yeah. It was a…it’s a rule in my kingdom…”
Aldo let out a slow sigh. “You’re nervous.”
“No…” DK smiled weakly at Aldo’s hard stare. “Well…I mean…”
“What did Mario tell you about me.”
That was not the question DK was expecting, “...That you think he’s a joke.”
Aldo let out a slow sigh, head somehow hanging further. The machine let out a small and tired beep. The human finally moved away to grab a mug. Filling it with the co-fi liquid as he slowly shook his head.
“I will never be able to make up for that, will I…”
DK tilted his head, “What do you mean?”
“I know they left to fix the sewer system that night. I already know Mario was the one that led them both out and Luigi followed…as usual. And that’s not saying that’s a bad thing. I know my boys, even if they think I don’t! They wanted to prove me wrong, and I just…”
Also ran a hand down the front of his face, “I thought that was it. They’d do something silly, either make the situation worse or better, and come back home. But now I’m being told that Luigi was trapped in…in basically hell. And that Mario had to…”
There was a heavy sigh.
“I said some unkind words the night before they left. I didn’t mean to make them sound unkind, it’s just… They’ve always been so reckless, they don’t stop and think things through! You don’t just quit a job out of nowhere! I get it, it was a horrible job, I’ve worked a few of my own when I was younger. It’s a part of life. It’s stupid, but that’s a part of it. But it paid well! It was a steady source of income that had benefits. A good way to start off with making money. You stick with it until you are stable enough to support yourself to find a better job!”
“I’m just…worried that they’ll keep on living with their knee-jerk reactions. That they won’t plan accordingly. I didn’t mean to…I didn’t think they would run off like that. I just wanted them to be aware that just running headlong into some unknown isn’t always the best idea… I just want them to be safe… I’m just…I know the fault falls at my feet…and I don’t know how I’m going to fix this… If I can fix it.”
“...My dad’s a lot like you in some ways,” DK said softly, “We don’t really see eye to eye. He says I’m too reckless. I feel like he’s a stick in the mud. But no matter what, whatever I do, I do it to make him happy. I just…don’t do it in the way that he would and I think that upsets him. We definitely got along better when I was younger. I think it’s because I didn’t argue or try to do my own thing…”
“But I don’t think he realizes that it’s not just him anymore that I’m worried about. Even as a prince, I have citizens looking up to me. Someday I have to be the King. …I thought what I was doing was for everyone…but I kind of realized I was just doing it all for myself. I liked the attention. It felt great once the rift started between dad and I…”
“It’s not…I’m not fully sure how to talk to my dad about all of this. I sort of realized during all of this craziness that…we both do want the same thing…” DK huffed, “I’m not great with words, but what I do know is that I need to talk to him. Like, actually talk to him…and I think that’s what you need to do with them.”
Aldo slowly nodded, “I suppose you’re right…if they actually want to talk to me about anything…”
“If all of this was started because they wanted to impress you, then they’ll listen. I think they want to listen, they were just waiting for you to listen first.”
_____________________________
The bedroom was eerily quiet. Both brothers have moved from the floor to Mario’s bed that has been pushed against the wall. Allowing both to have a good view of the outside world from the small window. Which seemed to help Luigi calm down from his lingering nightmares.
Didn’t mean either were relaxed.
Mario’s hand gently ran over the raised, pale scarred skin that rested on Luigi’s right arm. Realizing it was the same side that had been used to hold back the stream of fire that had been sent his way. The metal covering used as a shield. Mario worried about how bad Luigi’s side looked.
“Mario?”
The quiet voice broke Mario from his thoughts. Shaking his head, he immediately put on a warm smile. “How are you feeling? Does it hurt?”
“No.”
“Can you feel my hand?”
“Yeah.”
“Good, no nerve damage. Guess that Power Star could only help so much…” Mario’s smile slipped away slowly, seeing how dull Luigi’s eyes were.
“Lu…can you tell me what happened?”
The younger brother shuffled weakly, “Um…what do you want to know?”
“Everything,” Mario inched forward slightly until their knees were touching, “Tell me everything. I just want to know what happened.”
“...Well, I fell through that pipe,” Luigi started slowly, “and I ended up in this really dark place…”
“The Dark Lands.”
“Wait, seriously? That’s a little on the nose.”
“The Mushroom Kingdom, the Jungle Kingdom, they don’t really seem to be worried about extravagant things like names.”
“Guess so…”
“Anyway, you landed in the Dark Lands.”
“Right, I was there… I almost fell into a river of lava, was chased by some turtle skeletons, and captured by these creatures with these masks on. All in about…2 minutes?”
Mario blinked, “Wait, what!”
“Yeah, I wasn’t really…I didn’t want to face them down. I wasn’t brave enough. But I didn’t know what else to do but to run.”
“No, don’t. Don’t feel like that, you did what you could. It’s just… What happened next?”
Luigi let out a slow breath. “I was taken to Bowser… He asked a lot of questions about you. Said you were traveling with his ‘fiance’. I’m assuming it was Peach.”
“Yeah.”
“Bowser…he…”
Mario’s fear spiked when Luigi gave a shaky breath before starting to cry. Shoulders shaking, tears slowly flowing down his slowly blushing cheeks. Hand covering his mouth to muffle the sounds.
“Hey,” Mario immediately pulled Luigi forward to tightly wrap his arms around his brother, “Hey, hey, you’re okay. What’s wrong?”
“I-I told h-him y-your name,” Luigi choked out, “I-I was s-scared and I-I didn’t know w-what else to d-do a-and I j-just wanted t-to get a-away from him and I s-sold you o-out and I-I’m sorry…”
Mario quietly hushed his brother even as his worries grew. A new concerning thought entered his mind. “Lu…did he hurt you?”
There was a pause before Luigi slowly nodded. “H-He tore o-off part of my mustache…t-threw me a-after I answered…c-cut my arm too… B-But it wasn’t t-that  bad, I just… I s-shouldn’t have s-said anything. I s-should have been stronger-”
“You did nothing wrong,” Mario tried to keep his voice even. But he felt his brother flinch. “I’m not mad at you. You were scared and hurt. I can’t say this enough, you did nothing wrong… Weegee, do you believe me?”
Another pause…and Luigi nodded. “Yeah.”
“Do you? Because I will keep saying it until you do.”
“I-I do…”
Mario laid his head against Luigi’s, slowing his breathing. “Okay, so, that happened…”
“I was thrown into a cage and l-left to dangle over l-lava… T-The guards would taunt me. Sort of g-give me updates about what you w-were doing… I was told by Cranky Kong that you… H-He said you d-died…”
“Oh Lu…” Mario wasn’t sure what he could say that would make that no doubt horrible feeling disappear.
“W-We were moved to the w-wedding venue. W-W were going to b-be sacrificed in Peach’s honor… Then y-you and DK showed up t-to save us…”
“...You sounded so happy when I caught you. I thought it was just because we were back together. I didn’t think about…how bad it could be…”
“I was just happy to see you were alive. You were there and safe and… I knew everything was going to be okay…” Luigi was quiet.
Mario swallowed weakly, pulling his brother closer until Luigi was practically sitting on his lap. Finding comfort in feeling Luigi’s breathing. Hearing him sniff on occasion. The pressure of Luigi’s arms wrapped around him.
“Yeah…” Mario whispered softly, “Everything’s going to be okay…”
Outside the bedroom window, the still destroyed street was slowly illuminated by the rising sun.

Mario Odyssey made the Mario world so much larger with the variety of locations you could travel to and you can bet I'll be using all the information handed to me to make fic ideas with the most varied of settings. The game suggested there is little to no limit for what could exist.
Though I'm mainly thinking of Reader ideas at the moment.
Imagine a mole-like kingdom that looks all fragile from the surface but it turns out to be a very developed race with an unique culture centered around the tunnel system. The Reader could be one of those humanoids (mostly human, a little bit mole). They could be in charge of establishing a relationship with the Koopa King and the whole thing would be lighthearted as they show him how to thrive in the tunnels.
Or maybe they're like giant ants and label any outsider an 'ant-eater' and automatically deem them dangerous. The Reader was a human that was adopted by the ant royal family and one day Bowser ends up stuck within the Kingdom and is overpowered by the inhabitants (Come on, anys are strong). Of course, Reader being Reader is curious.
There could be a kingdom placed atop of an ocean made entirely from boats. There's boats on the water. There's ships in the sky. There's even ones underwater. They'd be known for fishing and trading and they could shift and move with the currents. Every once in a while they float close enough to the Koopa Kingdom to trade and the Reader, giving pirate vibes, could meet Bowser who travels down with his kids.
There could be a kingdom adapted to lava more than the Koopa Kingdom could ever hope, where the Reader can swim through the molten rock. A kingdom which buildings are set within massive geodes and empty caverns. Just picture the Reader showing off to Bowser by walking on lava where he is both horrified and surpsied because not even he can do that at his normal size.
Maybe there's a kingdom of cupids, or at least home to a cupid-like species - wings and all. They were asked by Princess Peach to aid with a battle against Bowser because of how elite their archers are and the kingdom agreed. Maybe the Reader gets lost or gets capture first, but with cupids being so closely entwined with love they end up falling in love with Bowser even though he's supposed to be the enemy.
That's all I have for now but I adore coming up with unique sounding settings so do expect more.
