Oh no, here comes another plotbunny (that anyone wanting to use or adapt is free to do so):
The Bros and Peach are fighting Bowser and Jr, it's an usual day in the Mushroom World.
Except this time some Magic Artifact is involved, and the chaos of the battle causes a Weird Reaction, which opens a dimensional portal sucking everyone in, drops the entire group in Brooklyn, New York City.
And on top of that causes everyone to be shape shifted : because of the power-ups they were using, Mario is turned into a raccoon, Luigi into a fox, and Peach into a cat (not animal suit : actual animals, although they still retain their sentience and speech on top of animal instincts).
And Bowser and Jr into humans.
After the first shock has passed, a commotion ensues, which Bowser insists wasn't his fault (it totally was : in his defence, he's used to get his way by yelling rudely into anyone standing in his way and torching them if they don't comply, and he didn't realise it wouldn't work as well coming from a half-naked, burly human with no fire powers and a bunch of wild animals surrounding him), and the group is separated : Luigi and Jr disappear who knows where (probably Manhattan) while Peach and Mario manage to stay with Bowser.
Bowser is torn between hilarity at his enemy's pitiful state, absolute anguish at his son's disappearance, maniacal glee at finally having Peach within his grasp, and utter confusion at the human world.
His first reflex is to grab Peach, kick Mario and walk away, but Peach firmly puts her foot (paw) down : not only is she not going to stand for such behavior, but neither she or Bowser know how to navigate the human world, so whether the Koopa-turned-human likes it or not, they need Mario.
They also discover during this interaction that yes, Peach and Mario still retain their speech...but only Bowser can understand them. It's a very awkward moment when they realise it (both for the trio and the random passerbyes watching the scene).
Meanwhile Luigi has managed to stick with Junior. Or rather, Junior has grabbed him and claimed to have captured him as a future hostage for when they meet again with his Pa and Mama Peach and that stupid Mario ! And as the Koopa Prince, he demands that his prisonner finds him food and get him home! Not that he's scared! Luigi just nods and immediately decides he will maim anyone touching that kid.
I can't decide if this would take place in the movie verse, involving the Bros' family, or if I stick to my personal headcanon of gameverse!Bros having being on their own for years before the Mushroom Kingdom.
But now everyone is Lost in New York, Bowser quickly gets labelled around the block as a crazy punk dude with a feral raccoon pet, Peach gets "rescued" at least twice by well meaning old ladies who think the street isn't for such a pretty, well bred kitty, Mario discovers a guilty pleasure for dumpster diving, Junior is a brat who gets in every fight imaginable and Luigi is the only one actually working on trying to get home.

For any of y'all staff members who've been on/working for Tumblr for a while: what have been some of your all time favorite memes?
Hey there, @localdorkincombatboots.
Why, we thought you’d never ask…
*
look at you, making me choose between my favorite children :< but i suppose i could highlight a few. just for you.
this one‘s for a show that i don’t even watch, but i feel it in my soul
i love the x as text posts format
these friendly crabs (actually the inspiration for our april fool’s day crabs!)
this absolute banger
—Caroline (Tumbly Engineering)
*
Something I’ve found really funny recently is counterfeit posts. It’s unique to Tumblr, a beautiful result of people taking the formatting options to the extreme conclusion of imitating the Tumblr interface itself.
As for all-time, though… my favorite meme format has gotta be YouTube Poops. I especially love when Hotel Mario voice clips are included. Toys Gone Wild and Civil Defivil stand out as ones that use them expertly. Warning for adult language for both!
—April (Tumblr Engineering)
*
Picking a favorite meme is like picking your favorite color of the sky. I’m at a loss—I am fundamentally incapable of narrowing it down to just one. Picking just one winner would make all the others lose the game, which I’d feel terrible about. Every time a fresh new meme comes around, I get so distracted by it that I turn my head and forget the previous one. I am awfully fond of this meme, though.
—Cates (Tumblr Marketing)
*
I take every opportunity to use Spiders Georg, that’s definitely my all-time favorite. I’m also loving the Breaking Bad resurgence on Tumblr, especially these very specific videos editing Breaking Bad into Mario games.
—Elena (Tumblr Design)
*
Hands-down it’s Hide The Pain Harold, not only because he’s just so often relatable but also because he’s a real and delightful person.
—James (Tumblr Community Support)
*
Where to begin? Whatever I answer, I will remember something else later this week and regret what's written here. However, the best I can do for now is as follows:
Not a meme exactly, but I do enjoy the anti-TikTok videos you see of people being filmed, while filming TikToks. The instant they realize they are being recorded is just delicious every time. The Grand Theft Auto, Here we go again... is very funny, and echoes in my internal monologue several times each week.
Also really enjoy the Luke Skywalker, end of Return of the Jedi, Me taking one last look at the party before i leave early and announced

Best,
—Your good friends at WIP.

Sonic Frontiers - Maybe The Most Important Sonic Game Ever Made
Tumblr media
INTRO:
It has been a little over a year since the release of Sonic Frontiers. I’ve likely dumped more time into this game than most Sonic games. I was extremely skeptical about the release of this game. It was rather difficult being a fan of Sonic at the time, it still is arguably, with every showing of the game it just led to more skepticism and dooming. I couldn’t tell if I should be excited or not as I did want this to be good but who’s to say with Sonic, y’know. Eventually the game did release and well, I will vividly remember my first experience with it. Watching the game finally unlock at like 11 AM and taking it all in was so great. Kronos was a great intro island and hearing Undefeatable was insane. I hadn’t felt this sort of hype and joy since I played Unleashed years ago. I no life’d the game and finished it in like 18 or so hours. I thoroughly enjoyed Frontiers start to finish although there were some hiccups here and there. But do I still feel the same about it now? Absolutely not.
Dirt tastes better when you’re hungry. If this interests you, keep reading as this will be a sort of in-depth-ish review of Sonic Frontiers. There’s a lot to cover and it might be a bit messy but I’ll try my best.
OPEN ZONE:
The Basics:
Tumblr media
This is gonna be a bit of a difficult thing to talk about but I’m gonna try my best here. Sonic games famously have added gimmicks to their games to help pad out the run time. It’s no surprise to anyone that making giant maps to blast through is rather difficult. Even making multiple maps for characters who aren’t that fast is a lot of work. This is why Mario games will give you multiple objectives for singular maps in a lot of his 3D entries. So for Sonic Frontiers, the padding for this game is the open zone. I want to clarify that this is NOT open world. Open zone refers to having a large open play area but not exactly being an open world. It’s more akin to something like Super Mario Galaxy than it is something like Breath Of The Wild. You don’t have absolute freedom here, just some decently large maps with multiple objectives for thingamabobs you need to collect, like a collect-a-thon!
But how does it actually turn out? It’s… polarizing. Frontiers throws you into these giant playpens of rails, springs and enemies where you’re going from set piece to set piece as you collect these memory tokens. These memory tokens act as your way to progress through the game as you need to hit certain requirements in order to progress the story. These tokens are scattered about everywhere and despite that, they’re still a chore to collect. You’ll need about 150-ish tokens for each island which means you more or less need to go through 150 of these little set pieces or get a bundle of tokens randomly by cylooping. I think enemies can drop them too at times as well. The little segments you need to do are immensely boring. This game takes Sonic's automation issues and makes it worse.
You’re gonna be going through automatic set pieces over and over. Grind this rail and watch this little thing as you basically mindlessly hold down boost. There’s gonna be times where you have to sometimes press an extra button or two but these are really unengaging. Exploring the map in general isn’t all that fun really. Part of what makes Sonic fun is optimizing routes to get from point A to point B but there isn’t anything like that here. There’s not much to really optimize given the fact that these segments don’t take any time and don’t have much of any depth. The most you can do is find ways to try and skip these segments and once you have the tokens, you have them. The objective isn’t there anymore. Same thing for all the other things in the hub world. That kind of just leaves the open zone to be nothing but busy work padding to make sure you don’t just blitz the game.
It should also be noted that playing Frontiers without anything like the spindash or maintaining speed when jumping enabled makes traversal much less fun. However when you do have these tools, it’s a lot more manageable and enjoyable. The thing is that you won’t have spindash unless you unlock it when you have a new save. You either need to S rank a bunch of action chain challenges or you have to get it automatically from playing the Another Story campaign which is on the final island. This sucks for a plethora of reasons because this tool is maybe some of the most fun you’ll have in this game and it’ll just be inaccessible to a lot of players starting out.
Tumblr media
Personally, if you're on PC and haven't played Frontiers before and you'd want to, I’d encourage using a cheat to unlock spindash from the start it if you’re going through the game for the first time. I'd also encourage making sure you tweak the settings to make momentum conservation stronger while also tweaking the "bounce height" option to change how far you can fling yourself with the "bump jump" ability.
Tumblr media
The aforementioned "bump jump" ability. The localization refers to it as "bounce height" for some reason, not realizing that Sonic has a built in bounce via his stomp follow up.
The spindash and momentum being retained won’t make these memory token segments more fun per say but getting from objective to objective ends up being quite fun when you need to go across the map to meet up with Tails or something. I guess I should also mention that the spindash is less of a burst of speed like previous games and more like a sort of "moon jump" that's also tied to the boost gauge. When you use the spindash, you get a lot of speed but it dips momentarily meaning that it likely isn't designed to be a consistent source of speed like the boost. This thing is for flinging and flying and as such it's not really affected by gravity. There isn't any momentum really applied here, you just kinda go flying. Not saying that this is a bad thing but it is something to note.
But there’s also challenges to do in the open zone! You have things like action chains, koco challenges and these puzzles to unlock the map. The puzzles are just fine. None of them are that fun or difficult but I find the tetris and path puzzles enjoyable enough to where I don’t mind doing those. I actually enjoyed the action chains a lot because it gives you a goal to grind towards much like a traditional Sonic game. You don’t have an objective to work towards that’s just gone, just your own limit on self improvement and your skills. The koco challenges do fall into the camp of being things you do once and never again but I will say that doing them is quite fun and a welcome challenge compared to the piss easy game that Frontiers generally is.
Side Tangent; The M Word:
Sonic Frontiers is a game that lacks the traditional 2D Sonic momentum. You don't really gain speed going down hills or anything like that. While I do find it very weird that a open zone game like this was conceptualized without proper momentum or ball physics or insert buzzword here, I can't help but feel like complaining about it at this point is missing what the game is trying to do. Frontiers is leaning more to be a precision platformer it seems, being more of what the boost games wanted to be. Very fast with split second reaction checks. The spindash isn't like a normal spindash, it's more used for platforming and specifically launching yourself. It's a new function for the ability and they utilize it quite well in the context of this game. I think in general, Sonic Team has done very well with the platforming game design of Frontiers by the end of it.
If you add regular momentum to Frontiers, it gets quite boring to be frank. The game isn't made around it. But when you simply add an option that gives more freedom of movement while still keeping it controlled enough to fit in the game, it's pretty fun. I think this is one of those things where you just need to accept where Frontiers decides to deviate rather than knocking on it for not being more of what we haven't gotten in maybe 30 something years. Even Adventure 1 didn't have proper momentum physics. While momentum to Sonic, in my mind, is what jumping is to Mario… that hasn't been the series goal for quite some time now and maybe it's time to move on from that…? I dunno, maybe this is a really hot take but it's starting to be more of how I feel.
More Of The Same:
Tumblr media
I was going to originally break down what each island was about but I honestly don’t see much of a point to. Whereas with something like Sonic Unleashed or Sonic 3, where each level has some different defining gimmick, these islands do not. They might as well be the same location with a new coat of paint on each. You traverse them the same way and progress the same way. The only thing that changes is that each location gets bigger and more annoying to navigate if you don’t have the spindash. This is ignoring Rhea which is basically just one giant set piece but you actually do something interesting and different here so I appreciate it for what it is while being a good moment in the story.
The guardians you fight on these islands don’t even feel particularly unique to them either. If you switch Asura and Strider, what really changes? They compliment the location just about as much as any other guardian. The only exception I can think of here is Shark who uniquely needs to be somewhere with sand so it can traverse through it. This is the only guardian in the game actually themed after the location. Any other one can fit pretty much anywhere else. I guess now is as good a time as any to also mention the new open world gameplay that comes with update 3.
It’s more of the same. The only real compliment I can give is that I actually find the new challenge towers very fun to climb. It’s a tense situation that honestly isn’t as challenging as most would lead you to believe. I heard some people say that update 2 was just this extremely difficult thing where you had to restart your save file if you failed and in the nicest way possible I just wanna say that if you believed this or felt like this was what you needed to do, you are very very bad at Sonic Frontiers. And that's okay! Just don't pretend it's a genuine design issue when in reality you just suck!
As for the new characters… they’re… definitely there! I don’t have much to say about them when it comes to platforming and traversal, they are fine. I'll speak on their combat later when I get to that segment of the blog, but as for the platforming that they go through, it looks like total shit.
Tumblr media
It's mildly fun but a visual eyesore. Update 3 in general completely shat the bed in terms of immersive visuals because what the hell man.
Tumblr media
Island Art Direction and Storytelling
I suppose now is also a good time to talk about the actual aesthetic of the islands and to be honest, I like Frontiers’ art direction. I generally think a lot of the things here look really cool. My main huge complaint though is a noticeable lack of it. Frontiers is not that good with its environmental storytelling and we really have no idea what’s going on with these ancients. We were given reasons as to why it’s so weird and barren yes but those are reasons crafted from the game being empty. You see things like houses but never anything like transpiration, cities, important social structures or anything like that.
Tumblr media
Photo mode is genuinely a blast!
While this might feel like a lame nitpick I feel like it’s important for Sonic games to really immerse you in the world and its inhabitants. Unleashed felt immersive. The Adventure games also felt immersive. The Classic games felt immersive too. Sonic 2 and 3 have so many structures and locations that probe at the mind and make you wonder how it got there. It makes you curious about the inhabitants and the world they lived in.
Tumblr media
Frontiers just doesn’t do this. There’s weird unexplainable structures and such sure but unlike a game like Sonic 3 or Unleashed, these never really contribute much to the gameplay or how you get around. You don’t have crumbling statues that block off your path really. You don’t have any temples you go inside of to explore. You don’t have any sort of amusement parks to blaze through. What would an alien festival look like? How would Sonic interact with it? How would he interact with their transportation? Are there any buildings built to utilize the chaos emeralds in day to day life? You never even use the chaos emeralds for any sort of utility in Frontiers to power a building or whatever, it’s purely for combat.
When you make a world more alive with more content and more proof of existence, this will inherently give Sonic more to do as well. But that’s the issue, this world isn’t lived in and doesn’t invoke any sort of imagination and as a result we don’t get any fun Island exclusive gameplay that plays off these concepts since they simply don’t exist. It’s a really huge missed opportunity that I wish Sonic Team focused more on. I would’ve taken smaller, more content dense islands with real history over giant plains with nothing to do and nothing to see.
Tumblr media
Because Ice Cap is the only snowy area, it is the only place where a set piece like this can work. They used the location to it's advantage to create a unique scenario that no other stage could do!
It’s also a given but I really hate these floating platforms littered around. They don’t blend with the scenery very well and since none of them are themed around the islands it gets very tiring to look at them very quickly. Sonic Team has been doing this drag and drop block placement shit for years now and it’s both disappointing and embarrassing to see them keep up this tradition with Frontiers, especially seeing mods that at the very least theme the platforms.
Tumblr media
The "Reimagined Platforms" mod created by Davihhh seeks to solve this issue.
I know that it’s usually bad faith to say “oh but look at these mods!” when discussing game quality as modders often get as much time as they want and foresight to see the issues with a game, but these platforms are just glaringly bad even as a first draft.
COMBAT:
Tumblr media
A Sonic Boom with no charge motion? Impossible.
For some reason or another, Sonic Team decided that the new Sonic game ought to be a character action game which is honestly something I’m all for. I’m not an extreme action game fan, I’ve pretty much only played the Kingdom Hearts series, Metal Gear Rising and some DMC. BUT I have played a lot of fighting games and love that genre which I feel is a pretty close relative to the action game genre. I’m also 19, creeping up on 20 at the time of writing which means that I grew up in the Flash era of the internet so a lot of my tastes for what Sonic should be came from a lot of DBZ inspired Sonic content. When I saw Sonic shooting ki blasts and battling giant monsters in the trailer, I was extremely excited for what this would bring. So how did Frontiers do in this department?
Combat Variety:
Poorly. If it wasn’t for DMC 2 and Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep, I’d be able to easily put Sonic Frontiers down as the worst action game combat I’ve ever experienced. This isn’t due to it not being as deep as something like DMC though. I have no issue with simple gameplay, I’d expect it from Sonic, the issue comes from a lack of experience and direction. Frontiers suffers from a lot of core issues. First let's talk about its offensive options. Frontiers has a basic combo system where you mash out a button and you get a finisher. You can select what the specific finisher is by holding a direction on your control stick. As you go through the game, you unlock abilities on a skill tree using skill points that you get from killing enemies or randomly getting it when you cyloop.
You can also cancel some of these attacks by inputting a defensive action like parry or dodging. With this combined it’ll allow you to extend combos for longer than usual since you’re constantly going into specials that restart your position in a combo. This is actually really cool as it allows for the player to get a lot of freedom in how they choose to beat up the enemy. But there’s just one small issue. None of these attacks provide any real utility for maybe 95% of the game.
Tumblr media
Fancy combo right? I think so at least. But I didn't really make a lot of, if any, meaningful decisions here. I was more or less just choosing what flashy cinematics to do. I could've done hurricane kick into cross slash over and over again to infinitely juggle them and melt their HP and it would've had the same result pretty much. It's a combat system that basically relies on how cool you personally want to feel as a player which is fine and all but being cool is made cooler when you have restrictions and things to keep in mind.
Using something like KH2 for example, when I do combos in KH2, I’m doing combos that are specific to the context and situation that I’m currently in. Not every boss falls for the same strategy. Now this is different from there being optimal combos. Even KH2 has strategies that stay dominant, but it’s not about avoiding a dominant strategy, it’s about making the player make meaningful decisions that will influence what tools they decide to use on enemies. One thing that heavily influences gameplay is how many enemies you have to fight.
Action games often give you a crowd of baddies to defeat and you'll need to pick them off or weave between them in order to avoid being harmed. Frontiers has none of that. You're always fighting enemies one on one unless it's something specific like the foot ninja enemies you can find in the overworld. These enemies DO make you switch up your strategy through needing to cyloop them to break their defense but once you knock them into the air it's business as usual.
I will say though that utilizing the cyloop in combat versus a crowd is rather cumbersome due to the fact that you want to stay mobile in combat and you’ll need to circle around enemies who are also mobile while hoping the terrain is flat enough as to not break your trail. You also go quite slow if you aren’t boosting while cylooping and honestly good luck trying to keep a tight cyloop circle when you’re going at 90 miles per hour. But outside of that, that’s really it for ways to deal with crowds. There is a combo ender that knocks enemies up however.
This is should be a good tool to have because these jobber enemies can’t follow you into the air, however you don’t actually have a convenient way to follow up once you’ve popped enemies up there due to the immense amount of hitstop you suffer when attacking enemies and combo finishers have even more hitstop and slow down which means even though they’re defensive cancelable, it’s not that quick. Your best bet honestly is just using the spin kick on a guy to knock him in the air and then do a parry cancel so you can juggle him. That way the other enemies can’t bother you and they can’t decide to defend themselves. Also note that for some strange reason parry is laggier if you don’t hold a direction when releasing it.
Defensive Options:
On the note of defensive options, they’re bad. I wanna take a moment to say that I think the infinite parry isn’t a bad idea on paper. I think where it messes up is that it has no risk/reward. Parry is a zero risk/extreme reward option no matter how long you hold it. Personally I think if the slowdown you gain from a parry was relative to how long you held it, i.e. you do a perfect parry and you get max slowdown and when you do a 5 second long parry you get no slowdown. This way you encourage people to learn to parry more precisely if they want more slowdown. It’s a kids game, I think the mechanics being easy to understand and utilize is fine so long as they beg for exploration and help children problem solve.
Speaking of slowdown, that mechanic is also not particularly great in my opinion. Whenever you parry a physical attack, the game does this cinematic to emphasize the parry while slowing down time to allow Sonic to attack. This is a neat little idea and feature but when you do it repeatedly it can become quite repetitive and causes some interactions to be really awkward, especially when attack hitboxes don’t actually disable despite being parried.
You also have a dodge maneuver. It has minor invincibility frames and can only be done either left or right and attacking at what seems to be any point during the animation will cause the zigzag attack. There isn’t much to say about it outside of the fact that it’s not really useful at all outside of canceling attacks considering Sonic has such incredible speed that simply boosting in any direction works better.
Minor Things:
There’s some other minor things too like how you can’t really naturally change targets due to there not being a normal targeting system. You have to hit something and then press a bumper to target the next thing that corresponds with the direction your bumper is. The combat is also very… sticky. This is due in part to the excessive hitstop on everything but also due to how they handle inputs. I don’t really know how the game deals with inputs exactly but the buffer here seems to be something where the game stores an input no matter how much time passes. A good example can be found with Amy. Her homing attack has a slight delay for whatever reason but if you double tap the button to try and force it out, she’ll attack after she homing attacks which is nearly a full second later. Another example is with Sonic where if you hold down R2 and just happen to press X when near an enemy that will also lock you into an attack. This nasty sticky control issue permeates throughout the entire game and makes the combat feel way way worse.
But now that this is the groundwork the team is going with, how do they actually design around it?
Enemy Design:
Enemies in Frontiers range from brain numbing to irritating with only a few ever really being fun to fight. Unlike a game like KH2 where Sora has multiple ways to deal with enemies and for enemies to force specific interactions, Sonic has a much more restricted tool set that requires more outside the box solutions to. You don’t have magic or anything like that. This isn’t exactly a bad thing though as Sonic is still a platformer at heart so making him do platforming adjacent challenges while battling an enemy is welcome. The issue for me is that a lot of these aren’t fun. I wanna talk about the fun ones first though, Sumo, the Ninja series, Asura and Ghost.
Tumblr media
Ghost just literally sort of appears at the last island and it starts draining rings from you and you need to complete a platforming segment in order to get it to stop. It’s stressful, random and actually amazing. Sure it’s guaranteed damage but it’s guaranteed damage in a game where you can avoid taking damage and farm health as much as you want so I mean hey, it is what it is.
Tumblr media
Sumo is another fun enemy that makes you bounce off these walls in order to gain up lots of speed to slam yourself into them so they’ll go flying into electric walls. It’s not a deep fight at all but it does make you try to position yourself properly and it feels extremely satisfying to pull off a good slam.
Tumblr media
Asura slams down one of it’s arms and you’ll need to run up them, hit the little weak points at the top, be knocked down to the bottom and then rinse repeat as it gets a bit harder with each arm. Except you actually don’t need to get knocked down. If you hold parry while the explosion cinematic plays, you’ll stay in the air where you can then maneuver your way over to the other weak points, skipping the first part of the phase entirely.
Tumblr media
Last but not least is Ninja and its clones which are what I believe the only guardians you can juggle like a regular enemy, opening them up for a lot of combo potential. They aren’t particularly difficult but it is very fun to just see how you can beat the shit out of them.
Contrast these with something like Fortress. When fighting Fortress, you ride some grind rails and then you start hitting it. That’s kinda like Squid, where you run along a path and start to hit it. What happens if you don’t kill it in time? Well you just have to chase it down again. Is it particularly difficult or engaging? No. There’s also bosses like Spider.
For Spider, you need to cyloop its legs in order to make its main body vulnerable. Afterwards, you have to play a skydiving segment where you need to go through these rings in order to make it vulnerable, again, and then you’re allowed to beat up on the Spider. You are forced to do this every single time. The issue with these 3 is that the time it takes to make them fully vulnerable is independent of player skill. There is no way to become better at chasing down Fortress or Squid unless you literally just do a drive by which I doubt was the intended design. These are spectacle fights that lose their luster shortly after doing them the first few times and it becomes boring.
With the positive examples I listed, the amount of time it takes to do them is up to the player and there’s clear places to make optimizations. It never feels like there’s just dead time where you’re just waiting for things to get interesting whereas in a lot of Frontiers’ mini bosses, that’s what they feel like. Wasting time. And if they aren’t wasting time it’s usually because you’re tearing right through them. I’m also gonna take a moment to mention Wolf and Shark. I didn’t use those two as specific examples because it’s honestly just too easy of an out and everyone knows they’re terrible. After a while I almost just wanted to avoid enemy encounters all together because it would generally be more of the same old same old.
But I think it’s also meaningful to analyze why enemies are like this. While in a game like KH2, you have limited movement with set options that developers either know you have or expect you to have. Arenas are small, closed in spaces where you can’t really just run away without going into a new room entirely if you even can. Contrast this to Frontiers where like I mentioned before, Sonic has much higher movement along with this being a giant open area where he can come and go as he pleases. There’s also the fact that you need to factor in the variable speeds that players will have due to speed being tied to a level system along with all the customizable stats there are for Sonic. There’s just quite a lot of factors that you have to keep in mind when designing challenges for Sonic so it makes sense as to why it’s like this. It needs to be broad and unspecific in what it wants from the player because the range of variables at play are also generally broad and unspecific. This is why Cyberspace has its own Sonic preset, designing around them all would be nearly impossible. But before getting into ways I think this could be handled going forward, we need to address the giant titan sized elephant in the room.
Titan Design:
One of the absolute highlights of this game when it launched. When you saw people talk about how Sonic was back, these titan fights were at the forefront. Sonic leans fully into more shonen inspirations as the heavy metal and rock music in the back pumps you up. These fights were and still are great spectacle battles that I still find cool after the fact. The issue unfortunately being just how easy they are. “Punch punch stomp” is the name of the game here and works as pretty much THE dominant strategy. There is never a reason to do anything else. Even on the hardest section of the game, Master King’s trial, it is still extremely easy. But maybe easy isn’t the right word, poorly designed might be more like it.
Giganto:
Tumblr media
Giganto’s hitboxes do not align up with his animations very well at all. This spinning attack isn’t meant to be parried as he does it but a bit after, towards the end of the animation. When you knock him down with a cinematic, he’ll often get up with an attack that you can parry, leading for an easy loop until his second phase if you know the pattern that he swings in which is the same every single time. These swings do not have hitboxes that line up with where he swings and sometimes where it feels like something should connect, it doesn’t quite do it. Once you get into this second phase, it becomes a bit harder because now he has these lasers on his back that will hurt you when he turns for a spin. Don’t worry though since you can avoid this by standing perfectly still. He also has a laser beam attack he can do which forces you to lose some rings as it happens, meaning you don’t want to let him do this often.
But of course, you can simply get in, cyloop him and then start punching and stomping. He’ll try to retaliate after you cyloop him with this weird janky animation but you can simply parry it and be fine.
Wyvern:
Tumblr media
The Wyvern is a fight that has cool spectacle. You kind of just parry the missile, parry its attacks and then whale on it. It’s an extremely flat and braindead fight that only really has its spectacle to carry it. There really isn’t anything much else to say here except it’s extremely hard to tell when exactly you need to parry its attacks when you’re timing them because the hitboxes both don’t align very well and don’t even really make sense depending on the animation. Good luck trying to parry the missiles with perfect parry in the second phase when you have all this screen pollution going on by the way. This fight blows.
Knight:
Tumblr media
Knight is my favorite titan fight in the game and it’s probably the one with the most mechanical depth. You start out the fight by just beating on it. I think what you’re supposed to do is try and cut Knight off as he spins around the arena but I’m not too sure. This is just what works for me. After beating up on him he’ll try to counter attack but much like Giganto you can simply parry this and get back to gaping him. The camera does not function well in this fight and sometimes his counterattacks are really janky and ambiguous or they simply don’t work properly.
Sometimes he’ll put up his shield to defend himself and if you beat on it enough, it’ll initiate a sequence where you ride their shield, avoid missiles and have to hit them in the face with the shield. This is actually a really cool segment but this isn’t exactly how you’re supposed to do the fight. In reality, you need to hit the shield, press R1 to change your lock on to the Knight and then start hitting him again. This is honestly really weird game design to see so late into the game. Rather than the game punishing you and trying to make you test your options if just pressing the button isn’t working, it rewards you with a spectacle segment that you can’t see otherwise which then gives you an opening on the boss.
In the second phase, you’ll need to parry the shield that is flying around the arena and send it towards the Knight. I find this to be a very cute way to make the second phase more interesting and I wish the other titan fights had gimmicks like this as well.
Supreme/The End:
Tumblr media
Supreme is a fight that exists. Both versions of Supreme are pushovers that have little to no challenge. I beat the new Supreme on my second try and the original Supreme on my first without even knowing how it works and I’d honestly say my only one loss to the new Supreme was that I didn’t think my rings would just not replenish after the first phase of the fight. Since they made it clear that this wasn’t gonna be leisurely I decided to play the game the way that it had asked me to when doing Master King’s challenge and then this happened.
Absolutely pathetic. It would be really easy for you to see this and say "well you can just choose NOT to do this" but this arguement is anti-game design as hell and super ignorant. If something is this easy to discover and use, it is a flaw on the game design and deserves to be critiqued. Yes, it is true that you can simply not do it, but why does the game allow you to in the first place? If the next Sonic game had a "instantly win the game and unlock everything button" would it be perfectly fine because you can choose to not do it? No, it's insulting to the developers and it's insulting to people who put in the work to actually experience what you've ignored. Games are well crafted experiences where developers vaguely guide you down it without holding your hand too much. Having ways to effectively skip these experiences in extremely easy ways isn't a good thing.
Why did I decide to do this? Well the "punch punch stomp" strategy was literally the only way I was getting through those titan trials. I felt like that was the way that most people were getting through them, so I just assumed Sonic Team knew this and designed around that. That and I had a small pool of rings so I wasn't going to really take my time. So I ended up getting what you saw above. I already knew that cylooping would boost the damage you did but I had absolutely zero idea that it stacked and I have no idea why it would even stack in the first place. I don't really have too much else to say, both fights are easy.
The End, the original from the base game is maybe my favorite part of the game. I don't have a deep explanation on why or anything like that, I just found it really fun and I'm sad that they basically made it the non-canon final boss/ending with this new DLC.
Wrap Up:
There honestly isn’t much else to say about these fights. They’re fairly braindead spectacle driven fights that don’t last long and can be brute forced through with ease. Personally I feel as though the spectacle of a fight should come from not only what the boss can do but what the player is made to do in response to the boss’ actions. But I understand WHY they’re so simple. These are meant to be cathartic moments for the player to have them really feel the power of Super Sonic. I’m perfectly fine with this. The issue is that it’s just not that fun when you have it all figured out. I think part of what makes boss fights great for me personally is the feeling you get when you finally overcome these impossible odds. When the cool cinematic you see works as a reward for your hard work. There’s no hard work here. Just flashing lights and one time thrills. I hope going forward we can get fights that strike a balance of cool but still interactive to where they feel rewarding to beat.
Suggestions To Improve Combat:
So I wanna say this first before I offer up any suggestions or things to think about. I am not a professional game designer and I do not think I know any better than the people in charge. I simply have opinions on what I think could make a more fun gameplay experience. Any design ideas I offer up here have many many ripples on the overall game that I simply just can’t go over every nook and cranny of because when you pop one pimple in the game design hill, many more arise in response. This is just speculative and spitballing.
That out of the way, I think Frontiers needs a more heavy handed “combat mode” for Frontiers. Through being near an enemy and pressing both the bumper buttons, Sonic will enter a locked on state. Pressing the right stick will cause the lock-on to move to whichever direction you inputted the stick in. Pressing the bumpers again will make Sonic exit this lock-on state and resume back to normal gameplay.
In lock-on mode, his movement is restricted to be slower as the camera locks onto whoever he’s locked onto. Pressing R1 makes him put up his guard where he’ll take slight chip damage whenever he blocks an attack. Inputting a direction while having your guard up will cause Sonic to roll in the direction you input. Pressing R1 while moving will automatically initiate a roll with invincibility frames. Pressing one of the face buttons will cause Sonic to do specific parries depending on the button. Speed parry, power parry and replenish parry. These parries have a window of just 5 frames so you’ll generally need to know what you’re doing for max reward with these..
Speed functions like the parry we currently have in the game, allowing Sonic to slow down time in order to beat up on opponents. Power parry will cause an instant kill to an enemy who’s under 20% health through a QTE segment similar to Sonic Unleashed, bosses not included of course. Replenish parry utilizes a new mechanic called the “phantom meter”. There’s a sort of meter system in the game with phantom rush and quick cyloop but I don’t think these add much. Under this new mechanic, Sonic has a secondary meter that he spends in order to use his special attacks. Each attack has a cost that’s relative to its damage. This means now you cannot just mash cross slash because you’ll run out of the resource it needs. You can refill this meter either slowly through attacking the enemy or by using the new replenish parry. By putting your nuts on the line, you’ll gain a significant amount of phantom meter back.
Under this new system, you might’ve realized that defensive cancels are gone. Nonsense! There’s just a new mechanic to sort of emulate what that used to be, Phantom Cancels. For just 10% of your phantom meter, you can cancel any attack instantly so long as it hits an enemy. Into what? Whatever you want. You’re put into a completely actionable state after this. Think of Guilty Gear’s roman cancel system. This now simply prevents enemies from being comboed forever as you will eventually need to end the combo and now you must consider how much meter you burn on cancels.
Is this system perfect? Probably not, there could be a plethora of issues with it but I can’t test these ideas so I won’t know myself. But it should address concerns with combat feeling a bit too braindead. This doesn’t address enemy design since I don’t really want to get into how I’d redesign every enemy to fit under these systems but with a more limited control scheme and more precise control over the character that ignores level stats and customized settings should make a Sonic that’s easier to design around for enemy encounters.
Combat Concerns:
I had a concern when I asked for input on this idea and got told that there shouldn’t be a sort of “combat mode” for the game but I regret to inform them and anyone else worried that the game already does have a combat mode. It’s just automatic. Sonic already gets into a new state where quick steps become dodges and his idle changes so the game already has something like this. I think making a separate mode also helps with navigation since at times when you’re trying to do something in the open zone near an enemy who’s a part of a set piece, you will be forced to attack them. Making a manual mode for attacking and such fixes this issue as well.
Going Forward With Combat:
I don’t really know if I trust Sonic Team with combat going forward. Based on how they addressed difficulty concerns in the final DLC. It seems that their idea for a challenge is just “more harder = more strict, more faster, more stronger” which can contribute to difficulty but when that’s all your challenge really has to offer it shows me that you aren’t really sure how to design a good action challenge. I hope that in the next game, if they return to this combat formula, they can find developers who are a bit more experienced with how action games are supposed to be.
CYBERSPACE:
Tumblr media
Oh look, my favorite parts of the game. Kind of. Cyberspace brings a more traditional experience to Sonic Frontiers where you go through stages that are pretty much stages you’ve played before but worse. To keep it brief since I’ve already said so much and there are things I rather talk about that I ought to get to, Cyberspace is rather boring for a majority of the game. For some reason, Sonic’s physics feel awful in both 2D and 3D with him feeling extremely slow in both. I’ve been told that Sonic’s speed in Cyberspace 3D is actually higher and that it’s an FOV difference that’s making it seem slower. I would like to direct you to this comparison.
Tumblr media
It was brought to my attention that the Unleashed clip skips the QTE trigger which means Sonic's speed isn't capped but considering that Frontiers has no QTE trigger at all, the comparison still works in my opinion.
Anyways the 2D sections are pretty bad too. They feel abysmally slow and none of the layouts are particularly fun. Making a 2D Sonic game that’s less fun to play than Sonic Rush is an achievement that Sonic Team should probably not be praised for but lowering the bar from the floor to hell is quite impressive in my book. The spindash once again does make some of these issues better but again this isn’t something every player will have or had at the time of playing. The main Cyberspace levels I really do enjoy are the ones that actually take from the Adventure series. I think that Frontiers Sonic controls rather comfortably in Sonic Adventure level layouts and I wished there were more in the game because I had a lot of genuine fun with them. The new levels brought in for the DLC were also ones that I found extremely fun. The DLC just straight up gives you the spindash so you have it for these levels as they’re designed around it.
There’s a lot of ramps to launch yourself from with a plethora of alternate routes to take along with many objectives to do. The only issue is that these stages can feel rather cluttered and like they rely too heavily on the player just flinging themselves around. One level in particular has moon gravity for some reason and while it was cool to fly off for a while, trying to do what the level wanted got kind of slow and boring since it took so long to land. Other levels can just be a pain to navigate because it just becomes hard to know exactly where to go. Other than this though, I found these levels to be quite fun.
WRITING:
For Sonic Frontiers, Ian Flynn was brought on to write the story. You may know Ian from his work on Archie and IDW Sonic comics. He’s sort of held as this golden standard for Sonic writing and while I think that’s absolutely insanely incorrect for the comics, he wrote Frontiers’ character dialogue pretty decently for the most part. I don’t think there are really any large stand out lines to me that come off lazy or bad. At worst it’s just kind of boring. The plot for Frontiers goes as follows. Eggman fucks around some ancient ruins at some unknown island and is trapped in CyberSpace. For plot reasons, the Chaos Emeralds are suddenly at these islands. Sonic and friends follow the signal but are then shot down where they’re all trapped in CyberSpace. Sonic promptly escapes because plot and is deemed “The Key” by a mysterious totally not evil sky voice. He then has to travel through CyberSpace in order to collect keys to unlock Chaos Emerald vaults.
But as it turns out, everytime he goes into CyberSpace, he gets slightly more corrupted.
Why? Because the plot demands drama.
So after Sonic gets all the emeralds, he has to fight a Titan and go off to the next island where he rinses and repeats for a while. Around the latter half, he ends up pretty much dying after the corruption becomes too much to bear and he’s trapped in CyberSpace. His friends then huddle and make a friendship circle to bring him back to life so he can… continue to corrupt himself through interacting with CyberSpace. And then he fights the last Titan and then The End which is an allegory for death. Was the concept of death weaved throughout the narrative in order to make this sort of thing make sense? No. By the way the moon isn’t really a moon. The characters see it as something different. Ignore the fact that this fact is literally never brought up once until the DLC technically and serves no real value.
This plot sure is awesome! The dark era is back!
Character Writing:
For the most part. Sonic feels fine here. He’s not overly wordy or preachy like he is in the comics. His responses are snappy and he has a nice sarcasm to him that I think Roger brings out really well with his new voice performance. Two lines in particular I like are his goal ring joke and his initial response when Tails asks if he’s a burden.
The goal ring one is actually a nice bit of humor that this game really severely lacks where the Tails conversation is just really real. That might be a weird compliment to give a Sonic game because this is a series about brightly colored furries but it just felt like that genuine response you’d get from any real life person who really cares for you. I’ve had these same sorts of interactions with people and Sonic’s response really hits the mark here. But let’s get onto more specifics.
Amy:
Amy is unfortunately probably at her most boring here. She’s my favorite character in the series so it does hurt a bit to say that I didn’t enjoy her here not that much. The reason why I love Amy so much is that she’s not a character with a sort of larger than life character. She’s not some mystical force that goes with the wind or a child super genius or the last of her tribe or a tube baby. She’s just a girl who gets by using her compassion and ability to bring the heart out of characters. She’s compassionate and more down to earth than other characters with a determination and will that pushes her well into the tier with her peers, even being able to keep up with Sonic.
This doesn’t really get to shine here. A lot of her tomboy-ish spunk is gone and she doesn’t really have anyone to bounce off of but Sonic so she’s not really bringing the heart out of anyone really. Her romantic interest in Sonic also seems to not even be mentioned here weirdly enough. She gets set up but she doesn’t get any actual time in the game to really shine. I feel like maybe she should’ve been reserved more towards the end of the game so she could bond with Sage and help her understand love. Part of Amy’s character here is that she wants to share her love with the world and it feels weird that the character who needed that the most, Sage, wasn’t given any from her. This could’ve been a great moment to help humanize her as she began to warm up to others and realize her emotions. Alas, we don’t get that so fuck it I guess.
Knuckles:
I really enjoy Knuckles’ character in this. His story is about him feeling alone knowing that he’s the last of his kind and he’s doomed to just guard the master emerald. While I did say I enjoy Knuckles in this game, it’s not because of his story. A complaint that I have with this game’s writing is that they’ll sort of create issues that just aren’t there. Knuckles is the guardian of the master emerald, yes, but it’s not like he was missing out on game appearances because he had to be there so this arc feels kinda out of nowhere.
Knuckles has basically not missed a single adventure since his introduction in the series apart from Unleashed and I think Colors? It feels weird to make an arc around this when it wasn’t an issue before so why would it be an issue now? He made time for a hoverboard competition and sees Rouge often enough to get her flowers but he’s really alone, right? There’s also some parts where he feels sentimental about the island due to it being linked to him and his people, which is an alright idea in concept but it’s hard to care with how much we already don’t care about the ancients.
Knuckles has fun dialogue with Sonic and their friendship feels genuine, but outside of that I can’t help but feel like this just wasn’t that great of a direction for him.
Tails:
Tails is another example of this story kinda presenting solutions to issues that aren’t there. In Frontiers, his character arc is that he feels as though he’s a burden to Sonic. While I think the actual dialogue in this is well written, I can’t get behind why this happened. A few things in this story really seem to bend to the will of the fanbase for better or for worse which I’ll go over later but as it pertains to Tails, it’s for the worse. Tails says that “Whenever there's a crisis I'm either running away or standing on the sidelines! You're always rescuing me when all I do is follow you around!” which is just… does this count as character assassination? Tails saved Sonic’s life, he saved Station Square, he fought Chaos, he helped take down Metal Overlord, he built the Extreme Gear that his team uses in Riders, he was a key player in 06 when Sonic died, he was helping Sonic get around the globe in Unleashed, he was the one who built the god damn translator for the wisps.
Tails is REALLY important and he KNOWS he’s important. He had this same exact arc back in Adventure 1. He even got a bit of a complex in Colors and Lost World about just how smart he is and honestly he’s not even wrong for that. But because he had this one weird slip up in Forces that people would not shut up about I guess Ian felt it was necessary to give a little “I’m sorry, it won’t happen again”. It blows. I can’t really say much outside of that since that more or less just is Tails in this game unfortunately.
Sage:
Sage man. Sage is a character archetype that I enjoy very much, which are characters who learn to be human, so it disappoints me a lot that Sage’s first appearance did her pretty badly. Sage not telling Sonic what’s going on honestly felt kind of contrived. She constantly states that Sonic is the enemy and that she’s not supposed to help him while also going out of her way to protect his friends and even him by just telling him to get lost. She trapped them in Cyber Space so whenever The End got out, they would be safe. It can be assumed she tried to do the same for Sonic also but he broke out because plot.
So for the rest of the game Sage is more or less just probing Sonic for no real reason while trying to make him leave the island. The reason this bothers me is because I can’t quite grasp why she would want this. Just like hear me out. Sage notices that there’s something wrong with the island. She then traps Eggman in CyberSpace to protect him from it. But later in the game she notes that there’s something that’s trying to get out of CyberSpace. So why would she lock him in there? She’s also given the task to get Eggman out of CyberSpace but barely makes mention of the fact that she locked him in there to protect him.
But she’s also trying to prevent Sonic from letting his friends out which would in turn let Eggman out which would... accomplish what she’s trying to do. What is her goal? Also just a side thing but it’s weird because Knuckles, Amy and Tails are somehow trapped between CyberSpace and reality but Eggman seems to be fully there. Sonic was told that his memories form Cyber Space and the reason he could get out was due to just sort of “following his memories”, but if that’s the case why couldn’t Eggman do the same and why do they literally share a memory of a place neither of them have been to?
Anyways, back to Sage. Sage’s motivation sucks, her plan makes no sense and she doesn’t really add anything to the story. The worst cutscene in the game also belongs to her. I can’t believe they really gave Sage and Eggman ZERO scenes to truly show their bond and then gave her a flashback scene of her reflecting on their time together. It’s just fucking scenes of him yapping off to her about getting him out of CyberSpace as they just stand around statically as if the game had zero animation budget.
Overall Writing:
Man the writing here just… isn’t great. It’s super contrived, character arcs either feel like they’re pandering, are misplaced or just unfulfilled. The concept of death is barely present in the story. Sure, the ancients died but like… it isn’t really used in an interesting way. The End is kind of like “oh I killed the ancients and now I’m gonna kill YOU” but for what purpose? The End is so sudden and out of nowhere that characters don’t even have time to process that it’s coming. You could say that the fact it just appears adds to how much like death in life, it happens randomly and unpredictably. But all sorts of deities just sort of randomly appear in Sonic so I don’t really know. The End ends up being as much of a symbol for death as something like Biolizard, i.e not at all. The connection wouldn’t really even be there if not for there being a statement in a stream saying so.
Tumblr media
Supposed translation of this livestream.
Ironically, another game starring a moon uses the concept of death to much greater effect, that game being Majora’s Mask. Majora has imminent death linger over you for the entire game. You see how it affects people and even affects you as you play through it. Even Sonic Unleashed, a game that isn’t really even about death, has moments where you see people try to triumph over their despair of everything going to shit with a sort of unbreakable optimism. Sonic’s main highlight in that game being his unbreakable will and inability to give up.
This isn’t to say that Frontiers doesn’t have good points or that that unbreakable will isn’t there of course. One of the best scenes in the game is from Sonic being on his deathbed and feeling the full force of the cyber corruption. He limps onward, barely able to walk. Sage appears to ask him why he persists despite every sign saying not to, to which he gives a deep breath, smirks and continues pushing on. That is a great scene. He doesn’t give some wordy response, he doesn’t beat her over the head with his morals, he just remembers his friends and that’s enough to push him through.
I also feel like Sonic’s final line before battling The End was also good… even if it doesn’t make sense in context.
“He took your home world... He took your lives... Are you going to let him do it all over again?! I need your help. We can end this! Please!!”
Who’s he saying this to? Absolutely nobody. But it’s still a nice line. The DLC does revamp the ending but it feels more like something someone would write to try and fix the story more than anything else. It’s crammed with all sorts of things that don’t really add anything to the story and feels more like they tried to band-aid fix what people saw wrong with the original ending. A complaint people had with the game was that Sonic didn’t actually get a new cyber form akin to how he used to get exclusive forms for the storybook games. So they decided to give him a new form through learning to control his cyber corruption by proving himself through trials given to him by the ancients.
That’s cool and all but… how? I’m not trying to be nitpicky or whatever but surely I’m not the only one curious as to how a corruption that is given to you through interacting with CyberSpace can somehow be harnessed into a power and even a new form. But whatever, at least we get a cool new form– …and it’s just Super Sonic with blue eyes while the more unique design is used only for a cutscene. Godspeed, Sonic Team.
Tumblr media
Another complaint was that the other characters weren’t involved as much so they got hammered in. I guess I should talk about the pilots of the titans but there isn’t really anything to say. They existed and they got washed by The End. None of them really have any character depth. They don’t really add much but they sure are there.
Overall, the narrative of Frontiers feels like a mess that tries too hard to address issues that fans had without realizing that fans honestly don’t know what the fuck they’re talking about sometimes. Ironically I feel like listening to them and jumbo-stuffing the ending didn’t really help it out much. I heavily prefer the original ending, Sage’s sacrifice was a great way to conclude her arc even if her character was poorly done. It felt more emotional and a bit less like bullshit plot armor or convenience coming through to give fan service. The shmup was also great. It’s a good ending.
If the writing section of this feels messy, that’s because I had a lot of thoughts about Frontiers’ writing but I quite struggled with putting them down. There’s so much to talk about with so many threads you can go on to really question the choices made but I just can’t do it all. From how weirdly unexplained CyberSpace is, to why the Ancients look the way they do, to why the emeralds just magically appeared at the islands… There’s just a lot to cover. Hopefully this wasn’t too incomprehensible. If it was, sorry.
QUICK POINT RAPID FIRE:
There’s some stuff I wanna mention here but they’re kinda like loose leaf notes so here’s just a quick rapid fire of some takes I wanna throw out.
It Sounds Nice:
The music in Frontiers ranges from fine to fantastic. While the start of Kronos and pacing of the music was phenomenal, I cannot remember a grand majority of the open zone tracks outside of their final more triumphant versions. While I appreciate the ambition to create like 7 different orchestral tracks for each phase of the island, I can't help but feel like it wasn’t fully worth it considering many of them are just alright. The CyberSpace tracks are also alright mostly. A large amount of them aren’t too amazing and they feel rather detached to the stages they’re applied to. They became much much better in the DLC.No opinion on the new character themes in the DLC. It is okay. The Titan music is fantastic, zero complaints.
Pretty Lights:
The lighting in this game is marvelous. I genuinely love how the CyberSpace stages look and Frontiers has some genuinely beautiful landscapes. The VFX work here is also amazing. They didn’t skip out on making sure these effects looked as good as possible. The cutscene animation is more static but the camera angles are a lot more dynamic than usual which helps with keeping the scenes looking interesting even if movement is minimal. The dynamic camera angles in combat are also quite nice but I can’t help but feel like Sonic Team didn’t utilize foreshortening and forced perspective quite as much as they could’ve. The Titan fight cinematics in general could’ve been improved had they been more dynamic and striking.
Is That Fur Genuine?:
Sonic and his stupid friends look good. Well, their textures look good. The model quality still isn’t very great but I’m at least glad the fur is back to the same quality as SA1. It’s nice. Heres to hoping they give us an actual good model in the next game because Sonic Team can clearly fucking do it.
Shinji Frontiers:
The voice direction here is nice. I think everyone did a very good job. I’m happy to see Roger finally start to get his roses because he does great with his Sonic voice.
Creaky:
The bed creak sample is used in the alternative Tower theme. I just find this kinda funny.
youtube
WRAP UP:
So that’s Sonic Frontiers. A very confused and messy collect-a-thon that doesn’t really succeed at much of anything. Its open zones feel half baked and like a game that’s far too late to the collect-a-thon party, the combat feels like a first draft, the writing is a mess and only makes itself messier with time and its more Sonic elements suck at being that. So what is good here? Uhhh– A lot of small stuff. Notably the movement. Probably some of the best movement that Sonic has ever had in a 3D space. This isn’t to say everything else sucks, this isn’t a broken unplayable game, but it’s a very polarizing one, at least to me.
My title for this review was calling it the "most important Sonic game ever made" and that's not really just clickbait. Frontiers is the most experimental game this series has ever seen I think. There's just so much added to it and so much being tried that there's legit so many possible directions to take after this and I think it will end up being the most influential game in the series. This is a turning point for better or worse. Whether Sonic Team gets their act together and does something great with it or we're sentenced to more mediocrity is up in the air.
Personally, I'm on the side of cautious optimism, but I do hope the best for the blue bastard going forward.

Gonna try to write out my thoughts on the Mario Movie. I'm at work as I'm writing the start of this and it's been a few hours since I've watched the film, but I'll try to remember what I can.
If you haven't seen my previous post and just want to know if you should see it or not, here's my opinion on that: If you're a Mario fan, absolutely go see it, but go in expecting a wild and fun love-letter to the games... and do not expect anything character-wise. Like, take any expectations you have for character moments and anything remotely emotional and turn it down to almost nothing. Also, stay for ALL of the credits.
(SPOILERS AHOY from this point onward!)
So, yeah, if you couldn't guess, I went into this with far too high expectations. Granted, I don't feel like they were all unreasonable ones...?
I just wanted to see the characters interacting. The humor was fun, the game references were fantastic, but whenever we did get a moment of characters just talking, it's breezed by as rapidly as possible to keep the plot moving. There's the tiniest of moments, but they never felt like enough.
Which isn't to say the characters are portrayed badly--they're not! They're fantastic! Rather than pulling the expected "these two siblings squabble and disagree and finally make amends in the end," Mario and Luigi are already great brothers to each other, and I liked that--it was refreshing! But I wanted to see more of their relationship, and... really, more of Luigi in general.
Peach was great, and she was GIVEN A BACKSTORY! I didn't expect that at all! It wasn't fully explained, but it's there! And it... doesn't really come up again. I mean, probably to set up for something in the inevitable sequel, but still! Also, she and Mario weren't swept up into an immediate romance! There's a brief moment when Mario is like "woah" when he first sees her, and throughout the film other characters like Donkey Kong and Bowser expect them to try to get together, but it doesn't happen! I liked that!
Bowser steals the show! DK, for as much as I hate Seth Rogan, was great, and his rivalry with Mario was fun!
BUT NONE OF THAT IS EXPLORED!!
They had so much to work with and they just... didn't.
Also, my fears were confirmed: Yoshi was entirely absent from the film. This was probably to focus on the other characters so they didn't have too many to juggle at a time, but... That one shot in the trailer? Where we see the herd of Yoshis? Yeah, that's it. That's the whole scene--that blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment.
Except for the end credits sequence.
If you stay until the very end, you're treated to a zoom-in on the wreckage of Bowser's Keep, and within the wreckage, a Yoshi egg starts to hatch. The screen goes black, and you hear Yoshi saying his name.
This implies a sequel, which means we'll obviously see him in the next film, but this doesn't help my anxieties much. I wondered before how Yoshi, should he appear in the film, would be handled. The last thing I wanted was for him to just be a glorified steed or pet, and we... still have no answer. In fact, we now have more questions (and for me, more anxieties)--was Yoshi trapped in that egg, as in Super Mario World, or is he a baby?? Will he actually talk? Will he be sentient and an actual character, or a glorified pet?? Goodness knows.
I know from all of this it sounds like I hated the movie, but I didn't. I had a good time watching it. (...Well, mostly--on a very personal note, oh gosh, okay, it's Illumination--I should have expected the pop music. It's fine. It's not a big deal. But I was not read for the inclusion of a certain song that immediately blasted me with negative emotions. That was not a fun experience, but at least it was short.) I cheered over seeing Mario and Luigi swinging Bowser by his tail, at hearing part of the DK Rap, at seeing Diddy Kong and Pauline and the many other background cameos. I adored the soundtrack and will be looking for a way to buy it ASAP (...if it's available, but knowing Nintendo...) There was a lot to like!
I'm just... flabbergasted at how little was done with the characters. I hate that I'm saying this, but in terms of character development, this is one of the most shallow movies I've ever seen that wasn't completely garbage quality. It would be one thing if the rest of the movie sucked, if it was an obvious cash grab, but it... wasn't. There was so much care put into the world and animation and music, in the references to the games, even obscure ones! So much love went into this, and I just can't understand what happened to the story.
Even if the plot were the same, they could have done so much more with these characters. Why didn't they?
I had this really terrible thought, and I could be entirely wrong, but... I'm remembering that the movie was delayed for four months, and also that Miyamoto was heavily involved in the making of the film. I'm wondering if like... maybe there was more character-focused moments, but he had them cut? The movie really did feel very weirdly cut, jumping from scene to scene rapidly with no room to breathe--I really wonder if there were more character moments there that Miyamoto demanded to be cut from the film due to whatever weird logic he goes by these days. This is the guy who's been ripping the plot from the Mario RPGs for the past... long while, because...??? Goodness knows at this point.
I dunno. I'm going to be seeing the movie in theaters again, though--maybe if I go into it knowing what to expect, I'll feel less bad about it.
Thanks for listening to my rambling, and if you've seen the movie, go ahead and respond to any of my thoughts here. I'm just trying to work this out in my head.

MASTERLIST
now, childe as a general streamer,,, he’s a whale in every sense of the word
poggers—
so childe as a streamer in general would be one word ;
✨chaotic✨
he would definitely be a variety streamer, but more so for games !!
especially pvp and/or pve games
competitive meta mf—
probably plays LoL, overwatch, apex legends, valorant and minecraft
don’t question the minecraft
he likes mining but has a personal vendetta against the creepers bc once they blew up his mansion
yes, a mansion
ask any of his community and they’ll tell u he spent a full-blown month and a half playing just minecraft to build it, only for it to go down just like that ;-;
his chat loved it tho <//3
he’s played honkai too !! mainly for the pve and grinding bc he’s a whale but uh,,, shhh
his community,,, his community are just a bunch of trolls at this point i cant even lie
they just KEKW, SADGE & COPIUM spam everything and the newer viewers get intimidated until they realise he deserves them all HJGKJHF
especially when he starts getting annoyed by the game,,, his reactions are too good to pass up on gn
typically when he does mario kart streams 👩‍🦯 that shit’s wild when it happens oh my
when he falls in rainbow road 🤡
and especially bc he has his webcam on, his viewers just see him internally dying or wanting to scream
also gets passive aggressive
shit talks everything and everyone when in that mood <//3
for what’s left of his dignity i won’t disclose what happens
definitely gets jebaited a lot too <//3 unfortunately he’s too easy for his chat ;-;
another mf with a massive community except he has a lot of friends (sorry not sorry albedo)
ppl have a love-hate relationship with him tbh; u either love him or hate him
no inbetween
unless u show ur love through bullying him then go off ig
his discord server, twt + yt are also really big too !! also verified on insta
also !!
he has lots of plushies :(( esp whale plushies from his community bc he’s the biggest whale they know <//3
but if u look at his setup, there’s a mini whale plushie on the top of his main monitor (he has 3), one big one (like,,, up to his chin) behind him, a smol on the top of his chair so u can see it above his head, and just more off screen HKJSDHL
they asked for a room tour once and half of it was just whale plushies
the rest were LED lights + shelves of merch & gifts from his community !!
he even has some fanmail (actual wholesome ones that aren’t cursed) pinned on a board too 🥺
also has an ensuite—
when he was eating on stream one time, his chat was sent into an absolute outrage
u know why?
bc he was eating noodles with a fork
bby ;-;
so sometimes he’ll get sent those beginner chopsticks with the finger guides to help him 👩‍🦯
he’s actually made sure to eat with them on stream tho bc he was sent one with a narwhal on top and he thinks it’s cute JHGJKH
nOW ONTO THIS MAN BEING WHIPPED FOR U AS A GENSHIN STREAMER !!!!
herkekle
now, his (also) AR56 ass has been playing since genshin first came out
an og if u will
this man,,, he’s been in love with u even before the game’s official release 🐥
not only were u in the promotional art and trailers, but he was also one of the beta testers so he got to try out ur character first hand in the early stages !!
and when i say he fell hard for u,
i mean it
when the game wasn’t released publicly yet, he wasn’t allowed to disclose any information and ngl, it killed him that he couldn’t talk abt u :((
so all he could do was say this upcoming was really nice so far and subtly brag abt u to everyone JHGKJSDFHLK
when the official ads & promotional art were finally released 🥺🥺 when i tell u he immediately went live talking abt the game and u HKGJHFDK
he didn’t care that he streamed at an ungodly hour bc he’s been waiting for the reveal for so long he needs to let everyone know </3
he retweeted everything from their official twt straightaway, made a yt video based off his spontaneous stream promoting the game + pinged his entire server abt it
yes
his nearly 200k server all got pinged abt this one game bc he’s in love with a character from it
and he has no regrets abt it <33
the day the game was available for download, he stREAMED THE ENTIRE DOWNLOAD PROCESS
while he and his chat were waiting, they decided to watch the trailers and character showcases to get a feel for the game, and played some mario kart to pass the time !!
as soon as the game loaded, he threw mario kart behind him and went on 🐥
he typed his name (ajax) for the when he chose aether and literally everyone was appreciating the aesthetics HKJFS
but childe,,, he was waiting for it to be over so he could see u ;-;
he appreciated the aesthetics, fighting mechanics & voice acting a lot tho !!
now he had gotten through all the tutorials, got all the chests he could he was finally in mond
and there u were 🥺 after the dvalin encounter u arrived before kaeya did
and boy did he show u off sm to his viewers HKJHKLF
they knew he was down bad before but now?? they know it’s hopeless to save him and if he ever falls out of love that’s when the world ends
luckily that’ll never happen tho <33
but he took !! so many !! screenshots !!
oh, and did i mention he changed his wallpapers to u? and his twt + discord pfps are also some very aesthetic screenshots of u from that first scene ;-;
he just appreciates u sm okay 🥺
he even clutched his chest where his heart is and sunk down his chair when he heard u speak 😩
his chat just spammed his downbad + y/nlove + SHRIMP emotes and he accepted them all with grace <33
now when he unlocks the wishing feature,,, u already know he’s wishing for u as soon as possible
ur in the standard banner so ur always there which he appreciates but he would’ve wanted u to be limited so he can rub it in ppl’s faces ;-;
and since it was the first release rewards, he had tons of wishes right off the bat !!
he was gonna roll for venti after he gets u bc,,, well does he need a reason??
also he doesn’t do well with archer characters in general ;;; but if ur an archer then ur obv an exception sooo
bUT he got a 5 star in his first 20 pulls !!
tho it was diluc 👩‍🦯
while he was happy bc he got an incredibly meta character right off the bat,
he wasn’t interested in diluc,,, (even now his diluc is barely looked after, and only used for spiral abyss, *sweats*)
the next 5 star he got was around the 60 mark, and he got a weapon,,,
i mean,,, he got the weapon that was most suited for u so that’s smth at least (ˉ▽ˉ;)
after he used all his remaining primos and fates, he finally got u 🥺
he just went “fuck the storyline” and immediately put u in his party and just
admired u as a whole
went through all the voice lines available, ur character story, ur idle animations (he had a heart attack from u and his chat clipped it) and took many, many screenshots
his favourite voice lines would have to be the night + about us + (y/n)’s hobbies
and then he equipped u with ur weapon and damnnn did u look so good with it 😩
he changed u to be his avatar, with his signature as :
“(y/n)’s whale <3”
and now the whaling process begins 👩‍🦯
after at least £2k, he got u to c6, along with at least 1 copy of all the standard 5 stars,,
then he went for venti’s banner—
his chat were just too focused on how he’s gonna play u to even think of anything else tbh HKJAH
with ur kit, u were honestly seen to be a dps or even a sub dps if ppl don’t want u on the field all the time
so definitely a perfect character for mr meta strimmer tartaglia (his twitch name btw ;;; childe is just smth he prefers his community to call him as but they also call him ajax too HKJSD) here
so he went through the archon quests with u as his carry and i won’t lie, ur name card is smth he has printed and framed behind him after he got it 🥺
he later finds out ur part of the fatui in the liyue archon quest tho and has to fight u with,,,
well, u ;;;
he finds it hot tho so it’s okay—
i won’t lie tho, his zhongli after he got him is his second strongest after u
he just builds all his characters in the most broken way he can so he can show his viewers that everyone can be a dps in their own right, not just the ones meant to be since there’s no right or wrong in this game !!
but now ur weapon is r5, ur lvl 90 and u have lvl 20 5 star artifacts that make u the most broken (y/n) seen
ppl who co op with him are honestly baffled,,, especially when the feature of them being able to view other players’ character stats become available,,,
u with ur nearly 3k atk,,,
he’s hit over 600k with u tho and he’ll always flex that
no one can top him as a (y/n) main and that’s honestly just a fact at this point 😩
when he saw that the dating sim hangouts was official, his immediate and iconic response was simply ;
“so when will (y/n) become a dateable, huh 🤨”
to this day he’s still waiting to be able to date u in-game <//3

When I was in High School, my crush and I got into a fight and neither of us were talking to each other. One day I was headed up the stairwell to get to my science class, when I saw them coming up from behind... I don't think they had even noticed me yet considering that they were busy talking to their friend BUT I am slow going up stairs so even if I rushed up the stairs roadrunner style they would have caught up to me, well; the little corner that connects the steps going up to the second floor and the steps heading down to the ground floor had a large open window... and I jumped out, like I literally just jumped out. I didn't even think it through, I just saw the window and my body was like "Yep, IK what to do." I landed on a bush or tree? It's too big to call a bush but too small to call a tree, landed in a squat before my feet gave out and I fall onto my knees and got two large grass stains on my jeans knee part, couldn't walk right either after that landing, I was shaky all day lol but it was a risk well calculated bc the whole thing would have been so awkward. I mean we used to be like BFFS before the rumors began and then they started and we just stopped talking without warning, we couldn't even look at each other. Our science partners, bc we were in groups of four, literally got fed up of our bullshit bc we literally refused to acknowledge the others existence... anyway, I digress...
Anyway, this whole story is a long winded way of me requesting how the brothers would react to an MC that literally just jumps out windows to avoid awkward moments, or to dodge people that want to ask them for favors, or when they straight up want to avoid someone?
And sorry about the large ass message, but thanks for letting me vent
You have a special place in my heart, window-jumping anon. Just uhhhhhhh look down next time okay? Ily
The Demon Brothers react to GN!MC jumping out of a window to avoid an awkward moment
(Mario jumping sound effect)
Lucifer
He approached you after class to ask exactly what you were snickering at your D.D.D. about during class.
Must've been real funny if you weren't listening to your lecture, huh?
"I imagine you've somehow found something worthy of laughing about in Demonology 101?"
You do not have the guts to tell him that you and Mammon were texting back and forth, abusing a new photo editing app to alter pictures of the eldest himself.
I mean, take a wild guess about how he’d react to seeing how big you edited his head to be-
The avatar of pride lets his eyes pierce into you, like he's trying to stare a hole through your blanket of "uh"s and "um"s,
You don't exactly see a way out of this one, but you can NOT let Lucifer see your photo gallery.
So you glance to your left to the open classroom window, and do the only thing you can think of: you jump.
Luckily you're on the ground floor so you??? really didn't have to jump so dramatically. But the fact that you yeeted yourself into a bush JUST to escape has left Lucifer speechless.
Honestly? He so impressed with your dedication that he's not gonna stop you. Besides, he's gonna see you back at home anyway so-
Also thinks you might be hanging around Mammon too much because that 100% seems like a stunt he’d pull.
Mammon
GIVE GOLDIE BACK RIGHT NOW
He KNOWS Lucifer told you to bring the credit card to him, and he demands to know where it's hidden! He's positive you know where it is!
But you don't really though?? You just brought the card to him like you were asked. If anything, you're the victim here!
But Mammon isn't having that. The avatar of greed is circling around you like an angry cat, patting you all over like airport security to see if you've got his beloved card.
"Where is it, huh?! Ya really think you can steal from THE Mammon?! Even if Lucifer told ya to, who do ya think you are?!"
When he has confirmed that you don't in fact have his previous Goldie, he's now cornering you up against a wall.
If looks could kill, you would've exploded into a fine powder
And you feel like your mental strength is about to do just that. So what do you do after you notices the slightest of breezes caress your face?
You jump outta that open window, before Mammon can even finish his "Wh- Oi! What're ya-"
Even though you just face planted into the garden, you're up on your feet and making a mad dash for somewhere that wasn't here.
Mammon lets you run for ten while seconds before he's hopping out after you. You think you can outfox the Great Mammon?! Think again!!!
Levi
You... weren't interested in this movie in the slightest, but you didn't have the heart to tell Levi that. Especially not after he’d begged/harassed you for the past week about watching it with him!
Reluctantly you agreed, and now you were suffering,,,But Levi was ecstatic! This movie was a classic! Sure it was an old one and the acting was a little bad, but you could overlook that if you watched it with your heart, not your eyes!
According to Levi.
You managed to keep your eyes open for the grueling one and a half hour movie, enduring every corny line of bad acting, horrible CGI, and lame sound effects straight out of a 90s super hero movie, and now the hell was finally over...
Or so you though, until Levi followed that up by immediately pulling out a cosplay outfit worn by one of the supporting characters in the show.
Funny how it seemed specifically tailored to your measurements. Even funnier how Levi was looking at you with those damned eyes.
You knew what he wanted without him even having to say it. But one look at the gaudy outfit he presented to you made your heart burn with a sudden indescribable urge.... to escape.
Honestly you caught him so off guard by suddenly getting up and sprinting out of the room, that he makes a sound that's pretty much the noise equivalent of "?!?!?!?!?!?"
He watches you run down to the end of the hall, throw the window open, and fuckin JUMP. Pretty sure he just witnessed your death??
Also this kinda solidified his 'gross otaku' mentality, seeing as you literally jumped out of a window to get out of cosplaying with him. A simple no would've sufficed, MC.......,.,,..,,,
Hey gamers... can we get an F in the chat? 😔✌️💦
Satan
Satan lent you a book to read last week that he was sure you'd be interested in! He found it pretty interesting himself, so he wants to see if you'd like it as much as he did.
That being said, you don't have the heart to tell him that you,,, didn't read any of it. Well you kind of did, if the cover counts for anything.
You doubt he would accept that as an answer, considering how you told him how much you appreciated receiving the book, and how you'd definitely read it and let him know how it was.
So now, Satan had come into your room with two cups of tea, ready to settle down and have a nice, long talk about your thoughts on the riveting plot that you promised you would indulge in.
"I'm really glad you decided to read it. I found that the protagonist reminded me a lot like you. I'd like to know what you thought about it."
Satan sets down the tea cups, and one sip tells you that he brewed it exactly the way you like.
His expression is eager and warm as he waits for you to begin gushing about just how deeply the story touched you... how absolutely moved you are by the sheer majesty that was the book he lent you...
Okay yeah, you're sweating bullets. You can't imagine how the sparkly eyed avatar of wrath would react to learning that you chose the company of your D.D.D. over Satan's book.
You don't have such an ice cold hard that you can just crush this book nerds dreams like that! And every time you look at his expectant face, the weight of your crimes weigh heavier on you until... you break.
Satan watches in shock and awe as you almost perfectly reenact the big scene where the main character leaps out of the window of a building rigged to explode, before making their escape. And you did just that.
Wow.. he never thought you could be so moved by a story, but he completely understands...
Asmo
How many outfits, Asmo. HOW MANY OUTFTITS WILL IT TAKE TO APPEASE YOU?
He's made you model TWELVE outfits so far, and you swear if you see another ascot, you're gonna lose your mind.
Asmodeus doesn't seem to notice the way the light slowly fades from your eyes, because he's pulling out outfit number thirteen with that cheery smile of his.
"Isn't this one absolutely adorable? Look, this part will look lovely around your waist! This part here hugs your body in all the right places, and this-"
You can't do it. You've gotta get out of here. You'd love to stand around and get mild rug burn from trying on a billion different clothes, but-
Actually no you wouldn't.
You DID promise Asmo you'd hang out with him today, but this wasn't really your idea of a good time.
"-Oooh, just thinking about it makes me want to eat you up~! Here, put it on for me, will you? I'll give you a kiss as a reward!"
You would do no such thing.
You make a mad dash for his ornate window and push it open. He has no time to stop you as he helplessly watches you vault yourself out like the room was on fire.
"MC?! Wh-where are you going?? Come back here! Grass stains are impossible to get out of that fabric!!!"
Beel
He means well. I swear he does. It's just that Beel can be a little... overbearing when he's worried about you. He cares, okay?
But he hasn't seen you eat anything all day! You tell him it's because you've got a stomach ache from who knows what, and you promise you've had little snacks here and there to keep from starving, but he can't accept that!
Eating is important, and you need it to survive. So Beelzebub was currently trying to nudge your mouth open with a pizza slice, while you vehemently refused. "Just one bite. And then another after that. You have to eat, or you'll go hungry... and I don't want that."
Beel knows the true pain of being hungry, and he’d never wish that on you! So just forget about your stomach ache for two seconds and open up-
Not that you really can. The aroma of that pizza was not sitting well on your stomach, and you were pretty sure you needed a fast escape or you'd risk losing your lunch. Greasy foods didn't exactly mix well with sour stomachs...
Beel still won't let up. He has a strong hand planted firmly on the small of your back, as if trying to prevent you from leaning back any further in your attempt to escape the pizza.
"If you eat this, I'll treat you to dessert at Madam Screams," he says, as if bribing your refusal of food USING food will somehow work out.
You can't break his heart, but you seriously can't eat that! Your head is spinning, thoughts racing, face becoming greasier and greasier from the pizza pressed against it, and-
You snap. In a sudden burst of strength you break free from Beel's grasp, and sprint toward the nearest window. All you see is your chance for freedom, and you're taking it.
You leap out and tumble into the ground, all while Beelzebub wonders what?? Just happened???? Did you really hate pizza that much...?
He never knew you were such a picky eater... To think you'd go so far as to jump out of the window though...
Belphie
You thought it was cute at first, when Belphegor wanted you to join him for his naps. And you didn't mind much. It was the weekend, you were tired, and he makes a pretty good body pillow.
But you didn't realize he planned for this to become an everyday thing. The youngest might not act it, but he sure could be spoiled.
But seriously, if you slept any longer, you might never have a normal sleep schedule again! It never occurred to you just how often Belphie sleeps.
He's definitely not human, because there's no way you can keep up with that, and maintain a normal lifestyle.
But the way he quietly, gently grabs your sleeve to cue your next nap session makes your heart clench. Why was it so damned hard to say no to this gremlin??
You were trying your best though, but the words always seemed to get caught in your throat. Belphie picked apart your excuses, doing everything in his power to take you back to the attic.
"You can study when you wake up." "Mammon wants to go shopping? Reschedule." "Lucifer told you not to be late to the board meeting? Just hide."
You're starting to get sucked into the sleepy lull of his voice, and it feels like your entire body is becoming heavy with fatigue. But no.... you resist!
Since there's no escaping this through words, you have to think fast. Fortunately, your fast thinking has led to an amazing solution!
Jump out of the window, baby
Belphie is just??? Did you fuckin???? Are your legs okay??????????????
He probably stops asking you to nap with him for a while, since you're willing to almost break your legs just to get out of it. You're gonna make him have weird dreams....

⋆ ˚。 both of you are competitive let's be real ⋆ ˚。 mainly play vs games, such as mario kart, jeopardy, monopoly, etc ⋆ ˚。 he swears a LOT because jean ⋆ ˚。 you both will try and sabotage each other by nudging the other or obscuring vision ⋆ ˚。 no matter what the game it is always extremely intense ⋆ ˚。 if people watched you they would probably be scared ⋆ ˚。 but you guys still are....... fairly cordial when one wins and the other loses ⋆ ˚。 "no pressure, but whoever wins this gets the game. bragging rights for eternity" ⋆ ˚。 sometimes you guys play horror games (i.e. resident evil 8, the walking dead) and he gets jealous when you say a character is hot ⋆ ˚。 you guys make a crack character for the show through jokes and it's so funny you need to lie down for a minute because you hurt so badly ⋆ ˚。 you are both delusional ⋆ ˚。 game grumps vibes ⋆ ˚。 will make fun of couples in the game and then be like "uhh" ⋆ ˚。 you try not to swear but he doesn't care and it is a beautiful comparison
Tumblr media
✧༺♥༻ sasha ༺♥༻✧
⋆ ˚。 mostly stick to puzzle-ish games and two-player games, like little nightmares 2 or death squared or human fall flat ⋆ ˚。 but you both love minecraft and other sandbox games ⋆ ˚。 great teamwork ⋆ ˚。 telepathic communication has long been established ⋆ ˚。 but you still try and kill each other because it's funny ⋆ ˚。 you can't even be mad because the other is laughing so hard over something so stupid it's so cute ⋆ ˚。 you will just throw sasha over the edge of the map and keel over for the next 7 and a half minutes laughing until you cant breathe ⋆ ˚。 and she does the same ⋆ ˚。 you play gang beasts with the boys and it's a fucking chaotic mess ⋆ ˚。 its literaslly so fucnny help hahahahhahaaa ⋆ ˚。 callmecarson playing gta 5 vibes forever ⋆ ˚。 "PLEASE STOP I CANT BREAAATHE" ⋆ ˚。 "breathe on your own time"
Tumblr media
✧༺♥༻ armin ༺♥༻✧
⋆ ˚。 you build the fucking sickest builds together in minecraft like fantasy-inspired, thousand-blocks-wide builds that are so detailed and have so much passion in them ⋆ ˚。 you plan them for hours ahead of time and every part of the process is the best ⋆ ˚。 also love very detailed puzzle games; death squared, the witness ⋆ ˚。 superliminal is your favorite aside from minecraft ⋆ ˚。 you cried at superliminal because you were so confused ⋆ ˚。 you've played all runs of undertale ⋆ ˚。 armin got emotional during all of them and so did you ⋆ ˚。 but he was the one to do the genocide run it was incredible ⋆ ˚。 detroit: become human when you're sleep deprived is absolutely shitpost heaven ⋆ ˚。 human fall flat while drinking 2x the ammount of coffee the average college person consumes ⋆ ˚。 after a while, you start laughing at silly little things you do on accident and armin thinks it's absolutely adorable ⋆ ˚。 he's always like "NO! save the animals" even when you literally cvant touch them ⋆ ˚。 you're working your way through all of the legend of zelda games. breath of the wild is your favorite, the original is armin's favorite ⋆ ˚。 he loves 8bit games
Tumblr media
✧༺♥༻ levi ༺♥༻✧
⋆ ˚。 he doesn't really play video games often because..... i mean come on ⋆ ˚。 but he does love horror games that don't have gore, like little nightmares, layers of fear, ju-on the grudge, FAITH, etc ⋆ ˚。 offers little commentary aside from appreciating graphics or going quiet before a "oh" and a complete explanation of what youve been missing ⋆ ˚。 he doesnt swear (that much) ⋆ ˚。 asks you questions since you introduce him to each game ⋆ ˚。 but he asks them like every five seconds like "what is that" ⋆ ˚。 "hun that's just a fridge" ⋆ ˚。 "but it has fifteen shelves" ⋆ ˚。 watches you play other games and offers commentary that makes you laugh at juuusst the wrong time and then you throw the minecraft hunger games championship ⋆ ˚。 and also gives you tips when it comes to gang beasts or puzzle games because he has the eyes of.... a god? ⋆ ˚。 overall a pleasant experience and very productive. he does tease you a lot though, even when you do actually figure it out before him
Tumblr media
✧༺♥༻ hange ༺♥༻✧
⋆ ˚。 it's the most chaotic thing you can ever imagine ⋆ ˚。 you make the worst jokes (in quality and in subject) and every time you're both cry-laughing ⋆ ˚。 literally deceased ⋆ ˚。 will punctuate every sentence of theirs with some swear word/combination just to make you laugh and it always works ⋆ ˚。 "burger kink. finally" ⋆ ˚。 heavy wheeze ⋆ ˚。 the most absurd things always happen when you play together and it is absolutely fucking magical ⋆ ˚。 the bits are extraordinary ⋆ ˚。 afterwards you actually talk about the things you liked ⋆ ˚。 and it's always like an endless list ⋆ ˚。 it's the most chaotic neutral wholesome thing you guys do ⋆ ˚。 once again game grumps vibes but like x5.49 at least ⋆ ˚。 you two could be streamers it would be incredible ⋆ ˚。 whenever you come out with the Good Lore they listen and then make the worst jokes/commentary, it's fantastic
Tumblr media
✧༺♥༻ mikasa ༺♥༻✧
⋆ ˚。 you always genuinely try ⋆ ˚。 mikasa is excellent at video games, let's be real rn ⋆ ˚。 but will dial it back a bit to play by your side because your side is the best to be on x ⋆ ˚。 so sweet during the entire time ⋆ ˚。 not chaotic but she does get competitive and kind of intense ⋆ ˚。 like staring at the screen unblinking intense ⋆ ˚。 always there whenever you get confused ⋆ ˚。 you end up explaining some things to mikasa tho. you always research the game beforehand, watch playthroughs, so you know the ins and outs and all the lore ⋆ ˚。 you Are the sacred scroll ⋆ ˚。 mikasa is genuinely in love with how passionate you get about the games, the look in your eyes and the smile on your face is so sweet and gorgeous ⋆ ˚。 you love introducing her to the things you love ⋆ ˚。 wholesome time. depending on the game you play ⋆ ˚。 your 2 player minecraft world is exquisite
Tumblr media
✧༺♥༻ erwin ༺♥༻✧
⋆ ˚。 loves really disorienting/detailed puzzle games ⋆ ˚。 so superliminal was right up his alley ⋆ ˚。 you worked out the game together, the teamwork was perfection ⋆ ˚。 and it always is ⋆ ˚。 you're the one to usually ask to play. he's not usually a video game guy, he prefers going out or staying in, but is getting into games thanks to you ⋆ ˚。 usually a very nice and un-chaotic time that you both enjoy ⋆ ˚。 usual banter and you laugh a lot. though not the hange type laughter, important distinction ⋆ ˚。 will ask questions about the games you introduce him to. and questions that directly ask about the things you love the most about the game so you get to gush about it to him ⋆ ˚。 like mikasa he absolutely loves the look in your eyes when you're talking about things you love ⋆ ˚。 usually ends up getting deeply interested in everything about a game because of you ⋆ ˚。 when it comes to strategy games he is a god ⋆ ˚。 don't even ask about 5D chess with time travel

HC request: favorite video game of each of the amis (or as many of them as you feel like)
oh fun! i'd love to do this
enjolras and courfeyrac: they grew up as neighbours and both played football, so to this day these guys are really into fifa games. it's what they grew up with and they get excited for the new ones each year. both of them know way too much about the game and strats and all that shit. people expect enjolras not to know or care much about video games but this dude will get gamer rage with his lil football games. courfeyrac laughs about it but he's exactly the same. they both have yelled at a tv before over digital football
combeferre: i think he'd definitely love stardew valley. it's the perfect combination of peacefulness and discovery that combeferre would get a kick out of. whenever the going gets tough he can just know for sure that he can go fishing and farming and whatever and have a good time. it's a nice little outlet for him to pretend he's a little guy in a world where he doesn't have to turn in a 100 page dissertation he hasn't started yet
feuilly: he was a problem child growing up and throughout his many different foster families, the one thing he could count on was his nintendo 64 he saved up lawn-mowing money for. he played a lot of super mario, legend of zelda, and starfox instead of doing his homework and doing what he was told and to this day he likes to boot up his old console to replay levels of super mario 64 just to turn off his brain. he's really into speedrunning and replaying a level over and over again just to see how fast he can get it. he could probably play super mario in his sleep
joly: joly's never really been into video games, but he can fuck up a match 3, lemme tell you. this guy kills it on match 3 mobile games and he gets addicted to them really easily. at the moment he's rehashing his candy crush days by seeing how far he can get before bossuet waves a hand in front of his face like "hello????? pls pay attention to me". he can close his eyes and do match 3 in the darkness behind his eyelids. it's mildly a problem.
jehan: oh he fs grew up playing runescape classic and still plays it to this day. he actually plays it with combeferre most of the time, but it isn't combeferre's favourite game (because of... you'll see). they will call each other and play runescape together and jehan is a TOTAL dick omfg. he follows combeferre around and randomly kills him in the wild so ferre loses all of his shit and you just hear an agonizing yell on the other end of the call and a "FUCK you." and jehan just cackles. jehan is an absolute asshole do not be fooled by his sweet disposition. he will stab you in the back with his overpowered enchanted the sword and then steal half your inventory. jehan is no joke, he is a force to be reckoned with.
bahorel: he was never super into video games but he's recently gotten into pokemon. he bought sword and shield when it came out and really enjoyed it and he's thinking about buying arceus when he gets his next paycheck (bc yk.... rent). bahorel just likes the funky little animals, yk? he has a super juiced up salazzle that feuilly affectionately refers to as "bahorel's Sexy pokemon" whenever he watches him play
bousset and grantaire: neither of them are super big on video games, but they like to play party games, like mario party or mario kart or anything multiplayer. both of them are pretty fuckin ass but they get a kick out of being shitty at games
marius: he grew up in a pretty anti-video game household but courfeyrac and everyone else sort of peer pressures him into playing. this starts a rivalry between feuilly and marius because feuilly sits him down to play smash with, assuming that he's gonna wipe the floor with this kid, but marius's button-smashing technique is so bad that it's somehow genius and feuilly loses so miserably that he throws the controller down on the ground and has to step out of the room for a few minutes. marius likes super smash now because he's somehow a prodigy at it without really knowing how to play
(bonus gavroche: he loves typical kid games. gavroche dominates in fortnite and i havent done a french fortnite friday in a while, but we all know how that goes. he's also a big minecraft and fnaf kid. he loves all of that stuff. he owns a creeper hoodie and has memorized fnaf lore so he can just tell his sisters and anyone older about it for like an hour. he's a sweet kid)

I just finished reading The Ties that Bind, and I love it! I have a small suggestion, one that you could completely ignore if you would like. Will Fable, Legend’s Zelda, meet Sky? Or Sky and the rest of the chain? I feel like that would be fun. But this is just an idea that I had, I’m not pressuring you do to anything.
I'm sorry it took so long to get to your ask, Anon! I've been thinking about this for a while, and the truth is that, while I would LOVE to have Sky meet all of his daughters at some point, I don't know if it will happen in the main plot of the story itself.
Currently in the story, they are in Legend's Hyrule, so there is a good chance of it happening, I just don't know if it will.
Considering this came along with various fic requests, I did end up writing something where they 'meet' but.. I'm terribly sorry, it's entirely crack, and I took way too many liberties with it.
I hope it will do to hold you over until Fable can make an actual appearance in the story!
“So, we finally get to meet your sister?” Hyrule asked, following as Legend led their group down the halls of Hyrule castle.
“Yes.”
“Yes!” Wind pumped his fists. “The only Zelda we haven’t met! I wonder what she’s like?”
“Kickass.” Legend smirked, stopping before one of the opulent doors and turning to face them. “I’d watch yourselves.”
There were a lot of things the Chain was expecting to see when they walked through the doors, but Warriors wasn’t expecting to see a young woman who looked quite ridiculously like Legend, if not for the haircut, spinning around to see look at them before having a wide smile break over her face.
“Z?”
“Link!” And the princess was running, running forwards with feather soft, tinkling laughter into the arms of...Wild? “Oh, Link! I haven’t seen you in ages! Why, look at you! Growing your hair out I see.” Another giggle drifted into the air as the girl brushed a hand through the Champion’s messy bangs.
Wild flushed slightly, much to the shock of all present, but especially to Legend, who stared between the two with his mouth hanging open.
“Everyone’s missed you so terribly, especially after you disappeared so suddenly! The Master was absolutely furious.” Fable added with a nervous laugh, smacking Wild’s arm lightly. “Thank goodness I can tell him all is well and you didn’t get killed or something, we thought he’d oust Robin for good when we couldn’t find you!”
Wild winced, nodding slightly. “I’m on another quest, but maybe I can send a letter? The mail system is working pretty well, for some reason.”
“Not out of Hyrule unfortunately.” Fable pouted, seemingly taking no interest in noticing the rest of them for the moment, instead continuing to stand in Wild’s personal space, neither having quite let go from their unexpected and rather startling hug. “Without you, the Master has closed all contact with Hyrule; I don’t think he wanted anything else to happen, especially since Mother would have been furious if someone else had gone missing.”
“Wait,” Warriors turned to see Wind staring at the- couple? Duo? “Zelly?”
“Tune!” Fable squeaked, pulling away from Wild and darting over to hug the second smallest hero. “My goodness you’ve grown! Are the two of you on an adventure together then? Wonderful!” Ocean blue eyes trailed up to look at the rest of their gang and Fable brightened even more. “Why, all of you are here!”
“All of us?” He couldn’t keep confusion from his tone as he spoke, quirking a brow.
“Well, nearly all,” Fable frowned, setting Wind down to gently stroke her chin. “And here I hoped to see Young Link again.”
Warriors was going to lose his mind. “Young Link?” His eyes turned to Time, who smiled with a light flush, raising one hand in a nearly shy wave.
“Hey, Zelly.”
The princess gasped, hands flying up to cover her mouth as she stared upwards to meet Time’s gaze. “Young Link? My. Goodness! Look- Oh my! You’re all grown up, aren’t you? I declare, you get even more terrifying than half of the others!”
“Legend,” Sky was grinning as bright and warm as the princess, eyes sparkling in the same manner and erasing any doubt that he was the young woman’s ancestor. “You didn’t tell us your sister was The Princess Zelda!”
Legend stared up at his ancestor in disbelief before shaking off Sky’s hands and throwing up his own. “That’s it,” The vet spun on his heel and turned towards the door. “I’m gonna go bang my head against the wall for an hour, toodles.”
“Well,” Fable turned to Sky with a bright grin. “It is wonderful to see you again, Link. Good heavens, how on earth do all of you handle being ‘Link’, it was bad enough having you all switch out, but now you’re all together at once! How do you handle it?”
“I go by Sky,” The Skyloftian replied with a fond smile. “He’s Wild, Wind, and Time. We use our hero titles.”
“Oh! That is clever! Sheik and I both have different names, so I suppose had it easy, I’m surprised no one thought of that before, what with how you all switched out so often- oh!” And the princess was spinning around to look up at Twi. “We’ve missed you too of course, but I must ask, since you’re all apparently time-traveling or some nonsense, could you give a message to your Zelda for me? I haven’t seen her in ever so long, and I do miss being able to talk over things with her.”
“I’ll pass it along.”
“You too.” She turned to Time, brows furrowing lightly. “Sheif is so terrible about writing to me, and I’ve missed being able to ask for advice with my fighting skills.”
“Understood.” Time grinned, earning a mirror expression from the princess.
How the heck was everyone taking this all in stride? Was Legend’s sister...dating Wild or some shit? How did she know Wind and Time? How did she know Sky? How did she know any of them?
“So,” Twilight cocked a hip and stared down at the princess with a warm smile. “They let you stay around, even after switching out all of us?”
“Yep! I am, apparently, quite the favorite. As is L- I mean Wild.” She sent a warm smile towards said hero, who flushed with pleasure. Ew.
“Should’a known it, he's a good kid.”
“He says you mentored him, so I suppose that can be attributed, in part, to you!”
“Aw, thanks, Zelly.”
Warriors would like a drink now please.
“Wait,” Four stared at the princess, eyes slitted and brows furrowed in a way that revealed he was clearly having a headache as well. “You’re- good grief- you know all of us, don’t you?”
Warriors really needs a drink. Seriously? Four too?
“And who are you?” Fable cocked her head.
Four flushed, ducking his head. “Hero of the Four Sword.”
Like a switch had been flipped, recognition sparked in Fable’s gaze. “Oh! That- that makes sense! I had forgotten, I suppose, how you all- well-” She waved her hand vaguely, and while none of the others seemed to understand it (thank Hylia he wasn’t the only one), Four apparently did. “You don’t think it’s weird?”
“Heavens no!” Fable drew back, looking mildly offended. “Link- my Link- or rather, my brother- Good heavens, what on earth do you all call him?”
“Idiot. Pain in the ass. Veteran.” Warriors listed off, making sure his displeasure with being left out of the conversation was made very clear.
“Legend.” Hyrule answered, shooting a glare Warriors’ way.
“Legend, my, that fits,” Fable shook her head with another tinkling laugh. “Does the same thing, albeit in a different manner and without the use of the Four Sword.”
“Heard that!” Legend shouted from just outside the room. “Stop telling them things!”
“Then come in here and make me, you sissy!”
The vet stormed back in, cheeks red and brow looking considerably more bruised than it had been ten minutes previous. “Not a sissy.”
“Yet you only appear on occasion, and never fight?” The princess snarked, hands on her hips.
“Do I look like I have the time to be fighting?” Legend returned, mirroring her pose with enough attitude to match the blue flames of the princess’s gaze.
“Well, if you have time to play dress up-”
“Necessary for a mission, miss ‘I fight duels in my regalia’.”
“I win duels in my regalia, thank you very much.”
“Heck yeah you do.” And was that- pride in the vet’s voice? “You scare the shit out of all of them.”
“I always was the better of the two of us at doing that, you just spend your time talking to cuckos and wearing my clothes.” The princess smirked.
Legend didn’t even have the decency to flush, crossing his arms with a smirk of his own. “You have to admit, I look better in it than you do.”
“Yes.” Fable beamed. “Yes, you do, and I hate it.” Her smile said the opposite but the conversation seemed to be over at that, the princess turning to continue conversing with the other heroes only to spin around again and clap her hands. “Oh! You're off exploring and adventuring, so you drop a message for me! Tell Peach and Daisy that I’m awful sorry I missed tea last time, we’ve been trying for weeks to get around to it, but with L- Wild having disappeared, the Master simply won’t give me the free time and Mother’s been just as strict.”
Legend pouted. “Only if they’re the only ones home, if I have to see that insufferable plumber’s face again I think I might just punch him.”
“Please do.” Fable spat. “He used that stupid hat of his to mind control me and make me kick the crap out of my team.”
“He mind controlled my sister?” Legend hissed.
“Yes, that dumb hat of his is sentient now, and he can force us to do things.”
“I hate that thing.” Wild scowled.
“Same.” Several others echoed.
Sky looked between them all. “Are we talking about Mario? Because if so, Legend, I will totally join you in punching him in the face, that guy is a pain!”
“Oh, him!” Hyrule scowled. “I don’t like him; he grates on my nerves like nobody's business.”
“He’s worse than Tingle.” Wind added, face screwed up in distain.
“Seconded.” Twilight and Time called out together.
“Third, Fourth, Fifth and sixthed.” Four added.
“Just because your name is ‘Four’ doesn’t mean you get four votes.” Warriors groaned, staring at his companions in irritation. “And who the heck are you all talking about? How do all of you know him? Is he immortal?”
“Hylia, I hope not.” Nine voices groaned at once.
“Neighboring kingdom.” Legend replied. “The Mushroom kingdom’s own hero is an idiot plumber by the name of Mario. His twin isn’t bad, but he’s a piece of work. I’ve had to deal with outbreaks of monsters from their kingdom on multiple occasions because he can’t keep them contained. Add in there that their princess is captured every other Tuesday because the guy can’t up and beat her kidnapper for good, and the kingdoms a mess.” Legend paused, frowning. “Wait, I just agreed to go there, didn’t I?”
“Yep.” Fable chirped. “But don’t worry, Bowser is hanging out with his kids this weekend, so he shouldn’t be causing problems while you’re all here.”
Warriors groaned, this time, loud enough that all of them heard him. “Bowser? Are you on a familiar enough standing with some villain that he tells you his weekend plans?”
“Yes.” The twin siblings answered, Fable bright and cherry while Legend deadpanned.
“We even play sports with him on occasion.” Fable added.
“And who,” Warriors tacked on, absolutely done and uncaring for the fact that apparently Legend and Fable played golf or something with their neighboring kingdoms greatest threat. “The heck! Is Mario?”
Nine pairs of eyes stared back at him for a moment, blinking in confusion.
“You know,” Twilight stated slowly. “Has anyone actually ever seen Wars at an event?”
“Come to think of it,” Fable tapped her chin. “You are the only one I’ve never seen before.”
“The only one?” Can Warriors please get a drink?
“I’ve met all of the others, be it in racing, sports, fighting matches, any number of things, but I don’t think I’ve ever even seen you, much less heard of you. Who are you?”
“That,” Legend smirked. “Is the Hero of Warriors. And I don’t know if I should laugh or feel bad that he was never popular enough to get selected for the games.”
“You weren’t either.” Wind hissed.
“Mom said I was on bed rest from being struck by lightning.” Legend waved him off. “I’ve had my time in the Mushroom kingdom, and if they ever do invite me back, I’d burn that Smash invite so fast the Master would think it never arrived.”
That’s it. He’s done. “Legend, I’m stealing your thunder-”
“Please do.”
“I’m going to go bang my head against the wall until the world makes sense again, or until I black out, Bye.” And with that, Warriors left.
(This entire fic was inspired by @tortilla-of-courage, her blog had a stint of asks about the boys knowing each other from Mario Kart and whatnot and it set my brain spinning. I blame her that this was the only thing I could think of when trying to write Sky meeting Fable. Thank's Tortilla!)

HI RI! 🥰
How are you? Just out of curiosity what games do you play? 👀
HI HELLO hehehe i’m good, how are you doing !!
ok so, i've been hesitating to mention this on here, but i work in the video games industry (pls no one ask which one !!) so i have both played them for like research purposes and for work, but most definitely mostly for fun
but i play a lot
i put them under the cut cause 😁😅 i wrote wayyyy too much lmfao
horizon zero dawn
I LOVE THIS GAME IT MIGHT BE MY FAVORITE GAME EVER, to be clear: i mostly play story based games/rpg games cause it always felt like an interactive tv show with its story chapters and like side quests and this one's story?? amazingggg, i don't want to give anything away so i'll just say: the world building/lore is fantastic, and the scenery alone is to die for
i also love that for the most part what you are fighting are robots, but like, with a bow and arrow🤪 i loved being able to like sneak around and stealthily kill or dismantle them and get super creative on how i approached them it was one of my favorite parts of the game
the sims
okokok i srsly love to just fuck around on here and do literally whatever with a ton of mods, i love how customizable it is and the building houses/buildings/venues is unmatched and it just like takes me right back to my childhood when i would steal minutes playing this when my brothers weren't around to demand the controllers; i will add that the gameplay itself is fun for a bit but i tend to loose interest a lot quicker unless i'm doing a challenge
ghosts of tsushima
this game is absolutely gorgeous, stunning, and like so soothing!? basically you’re a samurai and you’re taking back the island from invaders, the gameplay mechanics are unreal, like they try to make the experience as seamless as possible so its like you’re just watching this play out in front of you while you push some buttons
i will also add that i felt like i improved with holding and using a controller with this game, there’s a lot of fighting where you have to hit the button at just the right time, and like it sounds kind of stressful when i put it like that, but the training sessions you do for them are just so well done that i felt i grasped the concept but it changed my gaming skill from that point on; had to sit down and like take a minute after that
Honorable mentions:
- portal 2 (that AI is funny as hell and the puzzles are fantastic) - last of us (have only done the first one so far, but this game🥲) - the witcher iii (one of the first games i’ve played all the way through) - journey (marvelous, soothing, short, beautiful, highly recommend) - assassins creed (but specifically that one in italy, love it) - little big planet (2&3 the user created levels on this are works of art) - fallout 3 (this game scares me shitless, so...when i’m looking for that this is where i go lol) - phasmophobia (also where i want to go when i want to be scared) - mario kart (how can i not put this on here) - first class trouble (my friend is too good at lying in this game but def look this one up its a riot) - jedi fallen order (playing this one right now, i like it but some gameplay mechanics don’t flow that well imo) - star wars knights of the old republic (best star wars game imo but since it can’t run on my operating system anymore i can’t play it unless i so some wild as hook ups) -tomb raider (the original one, was a ton of fun/classic rpg)
super special mention: garfield kart
ok look, this game is dumb as hell. like it glitches so bad you’ll get stuck against a wall; someone gives you a slight tap on the road? your roadkill; you literally fly too high in the air and it bitch slaps you until you’re eating that pixelated cement. its the stupidest, weirdest, most vindictive game i’ve ever played and i love it with a burning passion, if you ever want to spend the five dollars when they’re running a sale: do it. please. i’ll play the online multiplayer with you with a headset. i’m dead serious.

Stellify, a new star in the sky
‘Who of you is the best with defensive spells?’ you asked the group of students you were leading through the deserted corridors. You felt like you were acting like the ‘I’m-so-much-smarter’ adult, but you had to make sure these seventeen-year olds stayed safe.
Two of the students, Jake and Aya, offered to protect the group while the others took their place as the attackers. Your place was the third floor and you stationed you and your group at the windows.
This side of the school was absolutely silent. There were no students here anymore and even the ghosts avoided this particular spot. The silence, however, did make it a little easier to notice any particularities.
‘See anything?’ you asked Mario the student one window over of you.
‘No,’ he answered while he looked into the darkness. You followed his view and watched the dark grounds. Once in a while the sky lit up by the defensive spells Flitwick was casting at the sky, forming a defensive globe around the castle.
There was nothing to see, just darkness and the moonlight. It was a clear night and it would have been beautiful if not for the tension in the air. Though the atmosphere was not one of fright and terror. Everyone was excited; it felt like the final battle. This would be it.
‘What do you think will happen?’ Mario asked you.
‘We have to fight,’ you sighed and looked around at the students. ‘With all our power. It’s now or never.’
Mario stayed silent as he looked back outside. The time ticked by. Minutes of silence as nothing happened. It felt as if the side of the castle you were on was separated from the rest so that there would be no sounds. Jake and Aya were both on one side of the corridor, walking up and down, checking to see if there was any possible threat. But there was not. Not even one person, good or bad, was seen by you.
‘It’s almost midnight,’ Mario mumbled.
‘Guys, come here for a second,’ you said. You looked at the scared yet determined faces of the seventeen year olds and you felt a sting of sadness rushing through your body; you didn’t know how many would make it. You did not even know if you were going to make it. You pushed that thought out of your mind as you continued,
‘You need to fight with all you’ve got. I can’t promise you the end, no one can, but it’s better to lose a hero than to live with the thought of not haven given your everything. Think of your family, friends and all the innocent children in the world. This is your chance to change the world they will grow up in. Take care of yourself and of the others.’
The students nodded at your words and then took their places as the clock stroke midnight.
A deafening bang sounded over the school grounds and everything on it. The glass in the windows vibrated and you took a step back. The globe of protective spells was being attacked with hundreds of spells from the outside. Cracks started to form and the sounds from outside the bubble became louder.
The screaming and incantations of spells disrupted the silence. The battle had begun.
You broke the glass of the window with your wand and started to cast spells from your place up on the third floor at the death eaters down on the ground. The students around you followed your movements. They were good; they hit a lot of death eaters, making them fall promptly on the ground or screaming in pain. And hidden from the view of the people on the ground, you felt a little protected at least.

George stood in silence at the tapestry that gave access to the outside of the castle. He rarely used this secret passage, anyone did. If you went through it you would come outside at the back of the castle in wild shrubbery. The time it would take to get out of there could better be used for one of the other passages, that maybe were a little longer, but those wouldn’t give you scratches all over your legs and arms.
But this was George’s place. Fred was somewhere else in the castle, at the statue of the witch that hid the secret passage to Hogsmeade. It was weird without Fred. Whenever they had discussed the battle they had always assumed that they would battle side by side.
What worried George even more however, was that he had no idea where you were. He knew Fred would be alright. He knew you would be alright too, but he was worried about you. He didn’t want you to get hurt.
George snorted at the thought of what Fred would say at that. Fred had been telling his twin for months now that it was obvious George had feelings for you and that it was obvious you had feelings for George too. But George never listened. You could never like George, you were just his friend.
The castle shook and a light flash lit up the corridor George was in. The battle had begun.
George raised his wand, ready to attack anyone who he might see, but the corridor was empty. If the death eaters were at the front of the school, it would take hours with all the defence for them to reach this side of the castle. But George stayed at his assigned spot. Because there might come someone. And he thought, with a little guilt, this was a reasonably safe spot.
The sounds got louder and the flashes of light brighter. George could now hear screaming and yelling from further in the castle. But there was still no one on this side.
After five minutes George got impatient. This task seemed useless. He wanted to fight. He had come here to fight, not to sit on the floor watching a door that would never open.
And as the flashes of light now changed into different colours, George made a decision. Maybe he could help Fred, or you. But he would not stay in a silent part of the castle while the others fought with their lives.
George ran out of the hallway leaving the emptiness for the liveliness of the rest of the castle. As soon as he reached the stairs he saw that people were fighting vigorously. The spells flew around his head while he ran up the steps two at a time. George’s old classmates, family, friends, other students of Hogwarts and the Order. They were all fighting with everything they got.
A curse nearly hit George as he reached the top of the stairs and he had to duck away to not get hit a second time. Within a second he was caught in a one-to-one battle with a death eater. But George was stronger than the man opposite of him. He quickly fired three curses and they all hit the death eater in his chest. The man fell down and green vines started to grow from his chest, covering his limbs and face.
A shiver ran down George’s spine as he watched what his curse had done to the man. He had never known he could be that violent. But the thought was pushed out of his mind when he heard a scream. Without one look at the unconscious death eater George ran further into the hall, following the sound of the scream.
Neville almost bumped into George and nearly dropped the plants he was holding in his arms. The boy had a smug smile on his face and the sweat was on his forehead. George had never seen Neville so courageous.
‘We got this, George!’ he screamed as he ran along, diving away for a spell.
The scream had faded away meanwhile, but George still made his way to the front of the castle. More and more people were lying on the ground here, both death eaters and Hogwarts students. George’s stomach twisted at the sight of a young blonde girl that lay on the stone floor, her eyes open wide and her mouth closed in a thin line. One side of her face had been blast away, revealing her dark red flesh.
‘George!’
Someone was calling his name, but George could not avert his eyes from the girl. It filled him with fear and anger, so much that he did not know what to do. He wanted to save the girl, even though he knew deep down that she could not be saved anymore. Her life had ended while she had tried to protect the world.
‘George!’
His name was called again, but this time someone put their hand under his chin, forcing him to look away from the blonde. He was met with your eyes that were big and stood full with tears. But you had a smile on your face. The smile that you always saved for George.
‘Come on,’ you spoke softly.
Your voice was clearer than the sounds around the both of you. The screaming faded a little as George followed you. You brought him to a corridor that was more quiet. There was only one other person there and while George looked around the space you talked to them.
‘Mario, you alright?’ you asked.
‘I’m fine. That guy down there isn’t,’ the guy, apparently named Mario, said and pointed at the ground, where a mess of black cloaks lied.
‘Good work,’ you complimented Mario and sent him a smile. Then you turned back to George. ‘Georgie, are you alright?’
George nodded but his voice seemed lost in his throat.
‘That girl… we tried to save her. But it happened suddenly. There was a loud explosion and she was just… gone.’
A loud bang pulled George from his haze and he roughly was put back in the castle. Your voice wasn’t clearer than the other sounds anymore and the hallway didn’t seem so empty suddenly.
But that was not just George. A group of death eaters had reached the corridor and was now walking down, aiming curses at you, George and Mario.
You were still facing George and had not noticed the death eaters yet. George pulled you with him behind a pillar and the place where you just had stood was blown up in flames.
‘Get behind the other one,’ George whispered to you before firing a spell at the front man. The curse hit perfectly and the man fell down on the floor, squirming in pain before losing consciousness. You crawled to the pillar behind George and started to cast spells at the group that had gotten smaller, because Mario had also managed to hit them.
The light beams flew from George’s wand as he took down the death eaters one by one. They all fell down in pain, some with purple faces, other with empty eyes and one with a second head.
After the men all lay on the floor, George dared to turn to you. You were sitting behind the pillar on your knees and looked with fear and satisfaction at the men. George got up and walked over to you. He helped you get up and realised there was a cut on your cheek. He wiped away the blood and brushed it off on his pants.
‘I’m fine, George,’ you said and pushed his hand away from your face. ‘Now, as much as I like you holding me, I think there are more important things now.’
George took his hand back but let his fingers linger on your skin. He wished there was some way to protect you. But he also knew that if he would find a way, you would get out of it and face the battle.
‘Be safe, alright?’ you said before turning around.
‘Wait!’ George yelled after you.
You turned back and watched George with suspicion and worry. But before you could open your mouth to say anything, George pressed his lips on yours.
It was short. It was sweet. It was a moment of electricity. Something George would have never done if he had been thinking clear. But this wasn’t the time to think logically. If George lost you tonight, a thought that he wouldn’t let through in his mind, he would never be able to live with himself if he hadn’t at least done this.
George let go of you and spun around, running away from you. The burning desire that had left its mark on his lips was still there when he entered the hall again and started to scream spells with a power he never knew he had.
-=-=-=-=-
The curses were flying around your head as you reached the fifth floor of the castle. The touch of George’s lips was imprinted on your skin. The pain in your ankle, which you had gotten from ducking away and falling, felt not like your pain. It was as if someone was just telling you that you were in pain. But you were not, because you were not thinking of it. Your mind was still in the empty corridor with George’s hands around your waist.
At the back of the hallway you saw a redhead similar yet completely different to the man that had just kissed you. Fred was fighting along Percy. They both had a grin on their face.
You noticed three persons crawling from the darkness behind Fred and George. You raised your wand at them, but when they came into the light you saw Harry, Ron and Hermione. You ran to them, your feet manoeuvring between the rocks on the floor.
The scream of a woman made you turn around, nearly tripping over one of the stones on the floor. There, on the other side of the corridor, stood a small figure. Her hands were raised in the air, her wand loosely in her left hand. Even from the distance you could feel the pride radiating off her. She screamed victoriously and the grip on her wand tightened. A bright blue flash came from the stick and flew along you.
It was all happening fast and very slow at the same time. Like someone had put a hold on the time.
The blue flash hit the wall on the other side of the corridor. You saw the cracks in the wall spreading and you saw how little rocks flew from it. There was a bright flash of light. Then you heard the sound. The deafening bang that you felt in your chest. The wall broke apart with so much power everyone fell from their feet. The hall filled with dust and it was like everything was covered with a blanket. The bricks from the wall flew around, almost hitting your head.
There was a second flash and the other wall exploded. You pressed your body against the ground and wrapped your arms over your head. The cackling laughter of the woman filled the hallway as you lay covered in dust, fearing for your life.
The thundering sound stayed in the air and you looked up. All around you was dust and rocks. The wound on your cheek stung from the dirt but you ignored it. You stumbled through the rubble to the others and that was when you heard it.
The scream that would stay in your mind forever. The scream that would haunt your sleep. That would wake you at night with sweat all over your body. The scream that you felt in your bones.
It was the scream of the end. The end of life.
Percy was bent over a body and you did not need to look longer than a fraction of a second to know who. You fell on your knees and a wail escaped your mouth. All your emotions were sucked out of your body. You screamed the pain out of your body until your throat stopped working due to the tears that were running down your face.
You could not bring yourself to look. You could not look at the body, at the empty eyes, the empty smile, the empty body. The place that had once been Fred.
Percy’s scream synchronised with yours. You felt his pain. The aching darkness spreading through your body. The cold feeling in your limbs and the ice in your heart.
No words reached you. People talked to you, but you didn’t hear them. Someone placed a hand on your shoulder and that was when you looked up.
The first thing you saw was his red hair. That messy mob of hair that you recognised from miles away. But what used to be a bright red, was now dark. It held nothing from the liveliness it had always done.
His hands were lying along his body. The fingers that used to play with your hair, that were always so strongly wrapped around his wand when he was playing a prank with magic, that drummed on the table when he was nervous. The fingers that now would never move again. You would never hear his drumming again and you would never feel his nails scratch your skull when he braided your hair.
You stopped looking. It hurt too much. Your cheeks had dried and your tears had disappeared. You were too sad to cry.
There was nothing you could do anymore; Fred was gone.

gangsta || oscar diaz
Tumblr media
Summary: one of the santos doesn't realize that the reader is oscar's girlfriend and shoves her in front of him. Requested: yes. "could you do a story of someone in the santos yelling at "y/n" and/or shoving her in front of Oscar and how he reacts? if so, thank you!!" Pairing: oscar diaz x reader Warnings: cussing, drinking, violence. Word Count: 2.9k A/N: SHE'S BACK! I took a break from writing because I wasn't feeling it. I lost my groove for a bit, i just didn't have the motivation but I'm slowly getting back into it again. I've missed you all, I've missed writing and I've missed Oscar lmao. the season 3 release date has me hyped as fuck and i couldn't leave you all hanging any longer. this isn't my best work, i'm a bit rusty so pls be nice lmao but HERE WE GO! Send me an ask if any of you wanna be tagged in future work of mine!
________________ "you coming?" oscar's deep voice came out through the speaker on y/n's phone, which sat on her dresser as she finished getting ready, swiping one last touch of lip gloss on her plump lips before putting it back in her make up bag. she looked at herself in the mirror, running her finger through her y/c/h hair. "si, i'm just waiting for angelica to get here. so impatient. i'll be there soon baby." her lips curved up in a tiny smirk as she heard her boyfriend let out a little scoff at her words. she and oscar had been dating for nearly a year now - they had met each other at a party and immediately hit it off. people had warned her to stay away from spooky, that he was no good, nothing but trouble - and sure, she initially had her reservations about dating him given his lifestyle, but she couldn't deny her feelings for him the more time they spent together. their relationship was passionate, intense, fiery. people had doubted that they'd last but there they were, proving everyone wrong. that didn't mean their relationship was always great - they had fights, disagreements. she hadn't agreed with his treatment of cesar, kicking him out and essentially leaving him homeless, but she realized it really was out of his control. "yeah alright. i'll see you mamas." just then, she heard a honk come from outside her home. angelica was there. saying she'd see oscar soon, she ended the call and made her way out of her home, locking the front door behind her and walking over to the car parked beside the sidewalk. inside was her friend angelica and all her friends - she and angelica went to school together and stayed in touch even after they both graduated. it was y/n that had invited angelica to the little party that the santos were throwing. getting in the car, the young female greeted angelica and her friends and with that, they were off, driving down the familiar streets of freeridge to the party. "so you and spooky are still together, huh?" one of angelica's friends, mariana, questioned. at the mention of her boyfriend, the y/h/c haired beauty felt a smile tug at her glossy lips. it was an instant reaction at this point. "oh yeah she is. look at her, she's blushing!" one of her other friends, yesenia, remarked, a wide, amused grin on her face. y/n rolled her eyes, but wore a smile on her face nonetheless. "ay ya cayense. yeah we're still together. it's gonna be a year soon." she told them. "a whole year. and some people thought we wouldn't make it past a month." "so i'm guessing you're not gonna need a ride home after the party?" "oh girl you already know what she's gonna be riding after the party. tu ya sabes." ____ the drive lasted only about a few more minutes before they finally arrived at their destination. mariana parked the car in front of the car and all four ladies climbed out. y/n immediately spotted her boyfriend's cherry red car and she got excited, wanting nothing more than to just see him already. together, all four ladies walked side by side down the driveway of the house and into the backyard where the party was just barely getting started. the sun was still out and the backyard wasn't as full as she knew it would become. she knew once the moon was out, that's when shit would get cracking. y/n's y/e/c eyes scanned the group of santos for her own santo until she finally saw him. he had just turned and walked away from who she recognized to be ruby and his older brother mario. mario who just so happened to be angelica's ex boyfriend. but that went to the very back of her mind when oscar's dark eyes landed on her, when a smile pulled at his lips and showed off those dimples she loved so much. her feet moved on autopilot, carrying her toward her tall boyfriend until both of them were standing in front of each other. "hey mamas." he greeted. he leaned down ever so slightly, hands on her hips, pulling her body flush against his muscular one. the butterflies in her stomach were going wild and she wasn't ashamed to admit that oscar always had that effect on her. "hey papito." she leaned up as he leaned down and finally closed the space between them, their lips meeting in a kiss that took her breath away. in the midst of their lip locking session, y/n felt oscar's large hand sliding away from her hip, moving to her back and down to her ass, giving it a firm squeeze. she let out a small gasp followed a breathless laugh against his lips, resulting in a smile pulling at his lips. both of them pulled apart, her hands resting on his chest and his hand still holding onto her hand, meanwhile the other was on her hip. "you look good." he commented, glancing down at her body. y/n smiled, removing one hand from his chest and lifting it up to his face. with her thumb, she wiped away from of the shiny residue of her lip gloss from his lips, knowing for sure that her own lips were now smudged with the clear gloss. "you don't look so bad yourself baby. thanks." she snatched the beer right from his hand and took a drink from it, giving him an innocent look. "damn, so you just gonna come up in here and take my drink?" he asked, face hardening, though she could see the humor shining in his eyes. he wasn't serious and she knew that. one thing that she loved about their relationship was the different sides she saw to oscar - she saw his vulnerable side, the side no one really saw, and his goofy and silly side. sure, oscar was a serious man but with her it was as if he was comfortable enough to be what he couldn't be in front of everyone else. "mhm. what's mine is mine and what's yours is also mine." she took a drink from the beer to drive her point home, laughing after she had swallowed the alcohol, laughing because oscar gave her ass a soft smack. "alright smart ass. let's go get another beer since you wanna be taking mine." with oscar's arm now wrapped around her, they walked toward the cooler, y/n greeting the santos that she was familiar with. most of the people that were there already knew her or had heard of her - it wasn't a secret that spooky had a girlfriend. "so, mario is here. angelica is here - that's not gonna end well, you know." she commented, glancing over to her clueless friend who had absolutely no idea her ex-boyfriend was at the same party with his little brother. mario on the other hand had seemed to notice angelica and was doing everything in his power to avoid being seen by her. "shit, that ain't my problem. i was just trying to help little man out." ____ the sun had gone down and now the moon (along with some lights) was illuminating the party which was in full swing. there was a dj booth set up, more people now occupied the backyard. music was playing, people were drinking, playing beer pong and having fun. y/n was among them - oscar was standing a few feet away with his homies while she stood with some of her own friends, some of them were also girlfriend's of santos. the young female held a drink in her hand, her body slightly swaying to the music that was playing loud through the speakers, a smile on her face as she listened to one of the other girls animatedly tell a story about the time her boyfriend got shit faced drunk. it all happened so quick. one moment y/n was laughing, tipping her head back, and the next her shoulder was accidentally being pushed by someone walking by her. it wasn't hard enough to hurt but it was hard enough for her to lose her balance and trip on her own feet. she crashed into a body beside her own, her drink spilling down their shirt and regret and embarrassment immediately took hold of her entire being. "shit! shit, i am so fucking sorry!" she apologized profusely. it was a guy she had crashed into - she recognized him as someone who had recently been initiated into the santos. she thought she had heard some of the guys refer to him as carlos. his eyes were on her and he looked anything but happy. his nostrils were flaring and his eyes held anger. surely he understood that it had been an accident right? "i can get you some napkins-" "you dumb bitch! watch where the fuck you're going!" before y/n could even react or have time to process what was happening, she felt her body being shoved backwards roughly, the air leaving her lungs for a brief second. she collided with the cold hard ground rather harshly, her palms breaking her fall - she could already feel the sting of the scrapes she was sure that she had. her ass hurt too from the sheer force in which she had fallen. she could feel the tears stinging at her eyes but she refused to cry, not in front of all these people who now had their eyes on the scene which was unfolding. "you stupid hyna. that'll teach you to watch where-" he never got the chance to finish what he was saying because a fist collided with his face and sent him falling to the ground similarly to y/n. it was oscar and he held nothing back as he leaned over carlos and began punching the absolute shit out of him, anger radiating from every inch of his body.
oscar hadn't seen what had led up to her getting shoved to the ground, but he had seen carlos laying his hands on her and pushing her to the ground and he saw red. nothing but red. he was protective over those he loved and cared about and there was no exception when it came to y/n. he wasn't about to let some pinche desgraciado disrespect his lady like that, he wasn't about to let him get away with putting his hands on her and pushing her to the ground.
all anyone could do was stare as oscar, who no doubt was now spooky, lay into carlos' bloody face, face contorted in anger. people knew better than to try and stop an angry oscar. "you fucking put your hands on my girl? huh?!" y/n had seen oscar get mad before, but she had never seen him get that mad. she had never seen him become that enraged. and while it was certainly a frightening sight, she couldn't help the way that it made her feel - he was defending her. "i should fucking kill you for laying a hand on her puto. i should fucking kill you!" meanwhile carlos was whimpering beneath oscar that he hadn't known she was his girlfriend and that he was sorry. that was when y/n sprang into action, pushing herself up and ignoring the sting she felt in her palms. she knew that if she didn't stop oscar, or at least try to, he'd definitely kill carlos. she knew what that tear drop tattoo meant, but that certainly wasn't how she wanted the night to end. "oscar! oscar baby, stop. stop!" she looked over at two santos and gestured for them to stop oscar and they did as told, each of them grabbing oscar by the arms and pulling the tall man away from the now bloodied carlos. he gave a wheeze, spitting out some blood, turning on his side and curling in on himself from the pain. oscar shoved the two santos off of him and leaned down, harshly pulling up the bloodied man by the collar of his shirt, getting in his face, lips curled like a rabid dog ready to bite. oscar was certainly ready to strike again, the only person stopping him was y/n and his need to make sure she was okay. "you're gonna apologize to her. and then you're gonna fucking leave. i don't wanna see you because if i see you, i'm gonna fuck you up again. don't ever put your hands on my lady again. that goes for everybody here!" his voice boomed, eyes looking around at the crowd that had gathered around the scandalous scene. "if any of you ever put your hands on y/n, it'll end the same way it did for this puto desgraciado." he spat. then his focus was back on carlos, shoving him in the direction of y/n, who was gently rubbing at her palms. "you're fucking lucky i didn't kill you. apologize. now." carlos, genuinely fearful, looked at y/n as best as he could with one of his eyes already closing shut. "i-i'm.. i-i'm sorry.. i'm r-really.. sorry.." each word he spoke seemed to be painful for him to get out. but y/n didn't care. all she was focused on was oscar. after the apology, oscar shoved carlos in the direction of the driveway, everyone watching as he stumbled off by himself. the crowd dispersed, chatter now erupting all over the backyard once more, everyone no doubt discussing what had just happened. everyone knew to give oscar space, leave him be because he was still seething with anger. but while everyone moved away from the angry santo, y/n moved closer to him, gently reaching for his hand that was bloody. she couldn't tell if it was his blood or carlos' blood. "os.." she spoke softly. his eyes met her own and they softened ever so slightly before he looked away, looking anywhere but her. she sighed, pulling him along with her inside the house. with his hand in hers, she walked them inside the bathroom, shutting the door behind her. the young female put the toilet lid down and sat him down on it. she grabbed a towel and wet it with some water before reaching for his hand, wiping away the blood. the white towel became red, and she realized all the blood was from carlos' face. oscar suddenly reached out and stopped her actions. her took the towel from her hands and turned them around so her palms were facing him. they were scraped up and some little pebbles from the ground had embedded themselves in her skin. it wasn't bad but it certainly stung, especially now that the adrenaline she had felt earlier was starting to die down. oscar gave a deep sigh, bringing her hands up to his lips and pressing a kiss against her skin. "i'm sorry, mamas." he still wouldn't look at her. "i'm sorry this shit happened to you. lo siento. i never wanted you to see me like that." it made sense to her now. oscar was ashamed of y/n seeing him like that, seeing him lose control and beat someone to a bloody pulp. he had never wanted her to see that side of him - she knew being with oscar wasn't gonna be a fairy-tale, she knew what his lifestyle was like and what he did, who he was. but she loved him regardless. "oscar, hey. look at me." she spoke in a soft voice. "look at me." she removed her hands from his large ones and placed them on his cheeks, getting him to finally look at her. her eyes fell on the teardrop tattoo resting below his eye, and her thumb smoothed over the black ink, then their eyes met once more. the dark eyes she loved so much stared deep into her own and it was like she was swimming in pools of chocolate. "you don't have to be sorry. what happened, it was fucked up but i'm fine, alright? really. it's just a few scrapes. nothing bad. and.. i'll admit, seeing you like that.. it definitely took me by surprise." she admitted. oscar's jaw clenched, and he tried turning his head but she wouldn't let him. "it took me by surprise but it also made me realize how safe i am with you. i remember when we first got together, you told me that being with you was dangerous but.. you protect me better than anyone. don't be ashamed, not with me. i know you, os. and i love you." he perked up at those words, the shame leaving his eyes, being replaced with something else entirely. for a few seconds he was silent, but his hands slipped around her waist and tugged her forward. he rested his forehead on her stomach, shutting his eyes. "i love you too preciosa. i'd do anything for you. anything." when oscar looked back up at her, eyes shining with an emotion he rarely showed around anyone else, she leaned down, capturing his lips in a kiss. his lips that were spewing nothing but hate at carlos were now moving soft against her own. "you know.." y/n murmured softly against his lips, pulling away slightly. she rested her forehead against his own, their lips still brushing together. "it was actually kinda hot seeing you like that.. seeing you defend me like you did.." oscar's lips curled up into a smirk, his hands now sliding down to her ass where he grabbed two handfuls, fingers lightly digging into her ample, clothed flesh. "oh yeah? how about we get outta here, baby girl? you can, uh, repay me for defending you.." "yeah alright. i do need a ride."

Watching Sean go through his top nine video games and coming up with mine (in no particular order)
Tumblr media
1. Crash bandicoot 3. It was the first game that I played through analog controls but more importantly, for me, it is the PINNACLE of platforming: Great level designs, good balance of bosses and fun power ups. I also loved how the main big bad taunted you at the end of you hadn’t collected everything so you had to go through it all to get the proper ending.
2. Fable. It was the first game that I played that had consequences to my actions and I really enjoyed the amount of options on how to power up your character.
3. Sonic Generations. For me, this was a love letter to Sonic fans and one of the better games that could deal with modern Sonic’s speed. The reimagining of classic levels like Chemical plant zone for modern sonic as well as seeing classic sonic manoeuvre through levels like crisis city and rooftop run is awesome and I enjoyed it a lot.
4. Skyrim. The thing that got me into it was that fact that it has dragons in it but my god, the depth of it when I started to play kept me playing. It was so much more than fighting dragons. Getting drunk with one of the darker gods is still hilarious to me.
5. Ratchet Gladiator. It’s one of those games where if I was having a bad day, I’d fire up this just to smash robots to pieces. Throw in a story where you’re kidnapped and put into gladiatorial style matches where you grow in popularity to the point where your merch is becoming more popular than the superstar as well as some bombastic weapon upgrades and it’s just an absolute delight to play. It’s a game that I can happily restart and complete in a couple of days.
6. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The first Zelda game that really took open world and ran with it. While previous games railroaded you to complete temples in order, this one turns that concept upside down and let’s you choose the order of how you take down the divine beasts. Plus, it boasts a bigger map than Skyrim and there is SO MUCH to do!
7. Super Mario Bros. 3. The NES was the first console I was given and along with it came SMB3. I was about 5/6 when I got it and was only to play on it for a couple of hours during the weekend so I never completed it. It also introduced me to the concept of hidden secrets like finding warp whistles by meeting certain criteria.
8. Pokemon Blue. The first ever game I paid for out of my own pocket money. I saved up for 3 weeks to get it and it was worth every penny. It was also the first game that made my heart race when I faced off against Gary in the final match. Never before had I felt such an intensity going into an endgame
9. Kingdom Hearts 2. This game is possibly my favourite of all time. I remember counting down the days until it’s release and I got it on the day straight after I finished work. I cried at the opening sequence and cried at certain points during the game too. It took everything that was great about the first KH and turned it up to 11. Then they added QTEs to enhance combat and had antagonists that all had their own motivations while still helping towards their end goal. The story moves at a good pace and the I the gradual slope of difficulty still works better than most games these days. It’s another game that I can happily replay again and again. It’s the perfect sequel.

Tumblr media

Word Count: 2.8K
Authors note: thank you to @kpopgirlbtssvt who requested a y!kookie who plays a video game with reader and the reader getting excited and kissing him when they win and then apologising before being pulled in for another kiss by jungkook. as i said before, this is V V soft and fluffy like there’s some mention of kidnapping and other stuff but like it’s barely there tbh. anyways, hope you enjoy!!!
masterlist :)
Your stomach rumbled again and you set your book aside with a sigh. You had been trying to focus on something- anything, other than your empty stomach for the past forty minutes but every method of distraction was proving to be ineffective. Normally, now was around the time Jungkook would give you lunch. He refused to let you go into the kitchen on your own on account of the ‘dangerously sharp cooking utensils’ and so insisted on making all your meals for you.
Jungkook was — to put it lightly — an atrocious cook. Your mouth watered at the thought of making yourself something that tasted good, or at least edible, but doing that would require an extended period of time with Jungkook watching your every move ‘to ensure your safety’. Though your feelings had, reluctantly, softened somewhat about him, you still weren’t exactly keen on spending more time with him than you strictly had to.
Which led you to your current predicament. You had not eaten since breakfast because Jungkook, instead of bestowing the usual amount of attention and adoration on you, had decided to lock himself in a room and not come out for several hours. You weren’t sure of what was in the room, or if Jungkook was even alive. You had knocked on the door and called his name as loudly as you dared, but there had been no reaction. You weren’t worried about him. You weren’t. And you certainly weren’t missing the attention he gave you normally. Of course not. You were just hungry.
So hungry that you returned to the door which stood in between you and Kook- Jungkook. You raised your knuckles hesitantly to the painted wood, rapping them against it three times and softly calling out his name.
No response.
You tried again.
Still no response.
Getting frustrated, you shouted his name, and even stomped your foot.
To be honest, you were kind of glad he didn’t come that time. If he saw you acting like a brat because he wasn’t paying attention to you, you probably would’ve leapt out the nearest window in embarrassment. Well, you would’ve if they weren’t barred. Again, it was something about ‘ensuring your safety, baby’. Jungkook was oddly fixated on your well-being, as you had realised over the past months.
Oh. You got an idea. You stumbled over your feet deliberately and loudly, and then fell to the floor, letting out an artificial moan of pain.
“Jungkook, help me! I’m hurt!”
You heard a loud crash in the room, before the door rattled obnoxiously. Obviously he was in too much of a rush to remember it was locked, but rather than unlock it, the door was practically wrenched off its hinges a second later to reveal Jungkook, wild-eyed and panting with exertion. You were almost worried he was going to run over you in his haste, but his eyes immediately fixated on you and he crouched down and yanked you into his arms, pressed so tight against him you could barely breathe.
A moment later, he pulled back to look at you, eyes running frantically over your every feature, searching for what was supposedly bringing you pain.
“Baby? Y/n? What’s wrong? What happened? Are you ok? Do you need to go to the hospital?” These questions were fired off so rapidly, you were pretty sure he didn’t even stop for breath. You shook your head repeatedly, unable to talk since he was currently running his thumbs over your mouth and pulling your lips back to check if any of your teeth were missing. You felt an odd flare of fondness in your chest before you smothered it ruthlessly.
“Stop!” You exclaimed as soon as his fingers were removed from your mouth, though they didn’t stray far, brushing against your cheekbones. “I’m ok! I’m fine!”
“But-” his brow wrinkled cutely- and no, he’s not cute, he literally kidnapped you a few months ago, “You said you were hurt? You yelled for me?” His tone had an upturn at the end, as if he was unsure.
“No, no I just…” you trailed off, and he tilted his head curiously, wide eyes somehow growing even bigger, which was also not cute, God y/n, get yourself together. “I just- I had knocked on the door several times and you didn’t answer. You- you haven’t been around all day…” his eyes became even wider, if that was possible, as his face stretched into a bunny grin which, ok, even you had to admit it was cute.
“So… you wanted my attention?”
“No!” You yelled, even as your cheeks flushed a deep red. Jungkook was properly grinning now, eyes swimming with amusement and you just could not stand it.
“Baby,” he started, his tone dripping with smug satisfaction, “If you wanted my attention, you could have just asked.”
“No I couldn’t!” You exploded, “I did ask for it several times but you didn’t listen! I’ve been waiting for hours!”
It was only after you had expelled the angry words that you realised what you had said. Your cheeks were now as flushed and furious as your shouts had been and Jungkook looked like his birthday and Christmas had just come at once. You already knew he found your anger adorable so you weren’t surprised when he tugged you into his chest, wrapping his arms around you tightly and tucking his head downwards to press his mouth against the crown of your forehead. You told yourself it didn’t feel nice to be so cherished by someone.
“Baby~” he cooed, and you wanted to die, “Daddy’s so sorry he hasn’t been looking after you enough. Can you find it in your heart to forgive him? Please?” You looked up to see his eyes were actually watering slightly in remorse, and you- You didn’t feel bad. At all. You had absolutely no reason to feel bad.
“It’s ok,” you muttered, “I wasn’t- it was fine. I’m just-” You let out a hushed sigh. “I was worried about you.” The last part slipped out without your permission, but you made sure it was as quiet as possible, murmured into the shoulder of his black sweater, and you prayed to every deity in existence that he didn’t hear it.
“You…” his voice wavered slightly,  Fuck, “You were worried about me?” He seriously sounded like he was going to cry. Was he going to cry? You looked up to see him gazing at you with the most adoring expression you had ever seen. You tucked your face back into his chest to hide your newly-blushing cheeks.
“No,” you mumbled into the fabric, and his laughter warmed you to your core, no matter how hard you tried to freeze him out.
“Ok, well, I’m sorry, baby. I promise I won’t ever leave you alone like that again. I don’t even know how I did it, I guess I was just distracted.”
“What were you even doing?” You asked, and then stiffened. Maybe it’s not the best idea to question the guy who kidnapped you. But he didn’t get mad.
“I was gaming.” He explained in a patient tone.
“Gaming?” You sit up to look at the room, now exposed due to the door Jungkook had ripped off its hinges in order to get to you. It was dark, illuminated by the TV mounted on the wall which showed an animation of snowy mountains and what looked like a horses’ head pointing up from the bottom of the screen, positioned in a way to make it seem like you were the one riding the animal.
“Yeah, it’s one of my hobbies.”
“Oh,” you said, unsure of how to reply. “W-What game is that?”
“It’s called Red Dead Redemption.” Jungkook told you, “Would you like to play it?”
“Oh, no thanks.” You shook your head at him, eyes wide. “It sounds like a violent game, so… I’d rather not, if that’s ok with you.” He smiled, as if bemused by your words, and stands up, pulling you up as well.
“You don’t have to play that game, I have many.” As he spoke, he walked backwards into the room, drawing you along with him by your hands. You liked holding hands with him more than you would care to admit.
“What games do you have, then?”
“Well,” he started off, as if preparing to rattle off a billion different games and honestly, it wouldn’t surprise you if he did. “I have Overwatch, Skyrim,” he leant down to look at the stacks of cases he had on the TV cradle, reading off the spines of the cases, “…Mario-Kart-”
“Yes!” You burst out, “I want to play that one. Can I play that one?” He chuckled, then nodded, picking out the case and opening it,
“Of course you can, baby. Have you played it before?” You shook your head regretfully and he laughed again.
“My friend had it, but she never let me play. I always had to just watch her play it. She was a bitch.” You pouted, and he snorted.
“How long ago was this, exactly?”
“I was seven.”
“And you still remember?”
“It’s not the kind of thing you forget, Jungkook.”
Five minutes later, once Jungkook had finally stopped laughing, the game was all set up and you were picking your avatar. For some reason, you had expected Jungkook to leave once he had put the game on, as you knew he wasn’t patient enough to just watch you play, but instead, he sat down next to you, leaving almost no distance between the two of you and causing your traitorous heart to gallop faster than you were going to be able to drive in Mario Kart. You were kind of worried, you didn’t want him to think you were inept or something.
“Ok, so now you’re meant to pick what to drive as.” Jungkook explained and you scowled slightly.
“I know that.”
“Ah,” he smiled, the edges of his lips curling into that smirk that you couldn’t look directly at, “Don’t get bratty, Princess. You asked for my help, remember?” You did not deign to answer that question, but it was mostly because you were unsure how steady your voice would sound after he called you ‘Princess’.
“So, who’re you going to choose?” He asked, before raising an amused eyebrow and turning to you, shortening the precious distance between you even more, “Princess Peach?”
“…No.”
You were going to choose Princess Peach, but obviously now you would rather die than prove the smug bastard right.
“What are you going to pick then?”
“…Not Princess Peach.” Jungkook huffed a laugh, before leaning in even closer to you. You could feel his warm breath brush against your cheek as he came to a pause right in front of you. His expression practically dared you to say something, to react, but you kept perfectly still as he reached over and plucked your controller from your hands.
He selected Princess Peach.
The first game was… bad. There was no other way to put it. You came in 8th out of 8. Jungkook didn’t even try and pretend he wasn’t laughing at you as you went off the tracks again and again, at one point you even started driving in the opposite direction. That was probably when Jungkook tried to drink and then accidentally snorted the banana milk up his nose so hard he couldn’t breathe. After you achieved three more last-places, he seemed to eventually recover from his laughter-induced lactose attack.
“Let me help you.” His voice was low, and smooth, and you know you should have said no, but you couldn’t form the word. He reached one arm around your torso, bending round to put his hand atop yours on the controller, and then sidled up even closer to you so that his other hand was on top of your other hand. It was like some kind of awkward side hug. You voiced this complaint, and without further ado, Jungkook simply lifted you into his lap so that both his arms were wrapped around you, coming to rest on the controller that you were now holding with white knuckles. You weren’t sure whether the squeak you emitted was due to plain surprise, or shock that he could lift you that easily, or just sitting in his lap, but it made you flush deeply all the same. Jungkook said nothing, but you could practically feel his smirk.
“You’ve just got to relax.” Jungkook purred in your ear, and you found the tension in your body leaking away, obedient to his command. “Good girl.” You whimpered slightly, and you definitely felt his smirk that time.
“Don’t panic when the race starts, just keep your cool, and focus.” His advice made you determined to prove yourself — not to him, of course. You didn’t care what he thought. At all.
The race started and Jungkook pressed his thumb down on top of yours, pushing the button and somehow you were in first place. You felt the excitement bubble within you but you didn’t let that distract you, allowing Jungkook’s warm breath on the back of your neck calm you and centre you in a way you were surprised it was able to. As you reached the final lap of the race, Junkook was barely playing, just letting you take control to cross the finish line. And you did.
You won! You couldn’t believe it! Before you could even stop to think, you turned around in Jungkook’s lap so you were straddling him. From there, it was only natural to lean in and press your lips to his. You distantly registered that you were kissing Jungkook, then the realisation became a lot less distant when it was joined with the fact that Jungkook was not kissing you back. He had almost frozen, and regret bursted as a sharp and bitter flavour on your tongue, replacing the delicious taste of him immediately.
You pulled yourself off him, and you would’ve fallen to the floor if you weren’t being held around the waist.
“I’m sorry,” you muttered, and then again, louder, “I’m sorry, I don’t know why I- I’m sorry,” you repeated it over and over, trying with increasing desperation to get away from him and back to your room where you planned to be screaming into a pillow for the next millennia. But you couldn’t get away.
“I’m sorry, just- what-” You looked down to see the reason why you couldn’t get away: Jungkook’s arms were locked around your waist, holding you tightly. As you looked down at them, they tightened quickly causing you to pitch forwards into his chest. You looked up again.
His face had morphed from the expression of shock into the widest, brightest, most devastating bunny-smile you had ever seen him wear.
“I- huh?” You stuttered, feeling more confused than you had ever felt in your life. His smile sweetened slightly as he leaned in to bump your forehead with his.
“Do you know how long I have been waiting to kiss you, baby?” His eyes were on you, as if expecting an answer, so you shook your head dumbly in response. He screwed his eyes shut, as if almost in pain, and you felt the irrational urge to soothe him swell within you.
“So long, baby. Too long.” He opened his eyes again to peer at you, “And now you say sorry for kissing me? Never say that again, Princess.”
“I-” It was difficult to speak, your lips were tingling what with all this talk about kisses, and you really weren’t sure where Jungkook was going with this. “I just- you didn’t kiss me back.”
“Baby,” started Jungkook, his voice dripping with sincerity, “Do you really expect me to be able to focus on moving my lips when I am experiencing a life-changing moment?” You giggled slightly, and he laughed with you, reaching up to cup your face in his hands.
“I have been wanting to kiss you since the day I saw you, and for a long time, I thought… Well, I thought it would take you much longer to like me. I just wasn’t prepared for it, that’s all.” His sweet smile bolstered your confidence, and you found yourself saying,
“So, if I were to… kiss you now, you would respond this time?”
Jungkook’s grin turned deadly.
“I guess you’ll have to try it out and see.”
