Greg Mullavey on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson
When one of my life’s heroes walks off the screen into the reals and supersedes all expectations, that’s a home run. So goes it with Mary Hartman Mary Hartman’s, Greg Mullavey. I got a taste interviewing him on the Zoom a few years ago, but this go ‘round witnessing him honoring his craft onstage at The Garry Marshall Theatre as Jules Feiffer, in The People VS Lenny Bruce, being eyeball to eyeball sans screens for the first after the show, sharing a warm hug, and culminating with this chat, a master class on auditioning, acting and keeping it real, on screen, on stage, and in life, well, wow!
We talked Greg’s early days, his pro-basball playing father, a Red Sox, a White Sox, who went on to coach the Dodgers, first in Brooklyn then in LA which got Greg to Hollywood and transitioned him from stage to screen and back again.  A late bloomer, first appearing onstage in the Army post his philosophy degree, 100+ shows later from Broadway to stages across the country to Los Angeles, most recently reprising his role as King Lear, Off-Broadway, 25 years later, and hoping to do so yet again.
We talked acting school - his cronies, Jack Nicholson, Dennis Hopper, and Harry Dean Stanton, and how a certain someone scored an Easy Ride… his first TV role opposite Telly Savalas, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman––Louise Lasser, Norman Lear, Mary Kay Place, Dabney Coleman, Martin Mull, Fred Willard… Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice and how both went over with his folks… meeting Meredith MacCrae, their high profile marriage, his Broadway debut (the thrill), opposite Mia Farrow, co-starring off-Broadway with Marlo Thomas, iCarly and a new generation and his ongoing important theatrical collaborations with lawyer Martin Garbus and playwright Susan Charlotte shining a spotlight on human rights.
We talked health, well-being, supplements, COVID, how he met Ariana, his partner of 25ish years, and why they made it legal. Greg’s still starring on stage appearing on screen, coaching young actors, with no evidence of slowing down. And he’s still learning lines - King Lear, for heaven’s sake. I’ll have what he’s having!
I adored Greg Mullavey before I met him - now getting to know this talented, whipsmart, inspiring, warm, kind, generous, compassionate man, I adore, more!

My Favorite Martian S01E31 Miss Jeckyll And Hyde - May 17 1964 In this episode, Paula, a brain played by Marlo Thomas (That Girl, Friends, Ocean's Eight, married to Phil Donahue) is helping Uncle Martin with a problem he couldn't solve. So Uncle Martin is actually threatened by her intelligence so he calls her a coward for leaning too heavily on her intelligence and not taking off her glasses and fixing her hair so she could be a beauty. Her sorta boyfriend Edgar, played by Tom Skerritt (Alien, Top Gun, Contact) shows up and notices she's beautiful, and permanently distracts her and Uncle Martin is safe from the woman who could help him fix everything and go home. Also weird is that Uncle Martin wiggles his finger to give her a makeover while she seems to watch. And he hides mirrors so she doesn't know she's had a makeover. #myfavoritemartian #marlothomas #tomskerritt #unclemartin #martinohara #timohara #BillBixby #RayWalston #beautifulallalong #iamnotpretty #nerdgirlmakeover #classictv #edgar #thatgirl #alien1979 #topgun #oceans8 #oceanseight #nerdgirl #brainygirl #smartgirl #Friends #rossandrachel (at Portland, Oregon) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_Zm38lh1Ma/?igshid=s2ykq85jabth

TODAY LIVE - SPECIAL TIME - 1 PM PT
With Greg L Mullavey Greg Mullavey!
Three years ago I was blessed to zoom with Greg Mullavey, whom I’ve adored for almost 50 years. A HUGE Mary Hartman Mary Hartman fan, I never missed an episode in the days before there were VCRs let alone DVRs. It took effort. MH, MH was sacrosanct. As was Fernwood Forever, led by Tom Hartman, aka Greg Mullavey. Last night, I got to see Greg live on stage for the first time, as Jules Feiffer, in The People VS Lenny Bruce, at the Garry Marshall Theatre, and then, at last, came face to face in the reals with this man and actor, I adore. Greg exceeded my expectations with both.
A true thespian, Greg continues to grace stages from LA to Broadway, recently playing King Lear for the Frog and Peach Theatre Company, co-starring Off-Broadway with Marlo Thomas in Clever Little Lies, and Gaby Hoffman in the Last Seder. His Broadway credits include Rumors and Romantic Comedy. Greg’s appeared in over 100 theatrical productions across the country!
Prior to MH, Greg appeared on TV in everything from Ben Casey, to It Takes A Thief, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Marcus Welby to Mod Squad… and many after, including Centennial, Dynasty, Civil Wars ( a load of others), to recurring roles on Insight, Rituals, The Bold and The Beautiful to iCarly, where my kids loved him. His film work includes Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice,  The Birdmen, The Love Machine, The Disappearance of Flight 412, and The Hindenberg, to name but some.
It’s Greg the human––with social conscience, grace, warmth, compassion, humor, and class, who shines through in life, and no doubt informs his formidable, and varied work.
I’m so grateful to have another opportunity to chat… to get to know more about this very special, supremely talented man. And to pick his brain on how the hell he does it!
